Economic History of St. Louis

History of St. Louis
St. Louis was acquired from France by the United States under President Thomas Jefferson in 1803, as
part of the Louisiana Purchase. It was founded by the French in 1764 when Auguste Chouteau
established a fur trading post and Pierre Laclède Liguest, a New Orleans merchant, founded a town at
the present site. They named it after King Louis XV of France and his patron saint, Louis IX. From
1770 to 1803, St. Louis was a Spanish possession, but it was ceded back to France in 1803 in
accordance with the Treaty of San Ildefonso (1800), only to be acquired by the U.S. as part of the
Louisiana Purchase later that year. The town was incorporated in 1809. From 1812 to 1821, St. Louis

The City s growth was primarily toward the north between 1840 and 1850, but about 1850 a rapid
advance took place to the south and southwest. On the north side, the land in Lowell was first offered
for sale in 1849 and in 1850 the town of Bremen was organized. This was where my family began in
St. Louis. The Oetting or as it was called the Oettingen family began one of the firsts banks in the
town of Bremen and from that it has merged or changed its name into the Boatmen s, Nation s, Bank
of America Family. This has been the cornerstone to my family s success in the St. Louis area.
The St. Louis World s Fair (1904), which was held in Forest Park, captured global attention as it
displayed various technological developments. The fair celebrated the centennial of the Louisiana
Purchase and transformed Forest Park into a veritable fairyland of white palaces, lagoons, and
landscaping, attracting 20,000,000 visitors to the City. The fair focused worldwide attention on St.
Louis and caused increased construction of new hotels, office buildings, and homes, which continued
until World War I. Throughout this time, St. Louis industry enjoyed a steady substantial growth. The
City became the world s largest producer of beer, shoes, stoves, wagons, and many other products.

Foreshadowing in Toni Morrison s Beloved
Foreshadowing in Beloved
In the novel Beloved, Toni Morrison addresses many broad themes and issues that are continually
reoccurring throughout the book. Morrison uses each one of the characters to aid in the development
of her novel. Sethe, Denver, and Beloved, all main characters in this book, represent many of the large
issues. One of the major themes in the novel is portrayed with the falling of Beloved, Sethe, and
Denver in the ice skating scene. In the second section of Beloved, Morrison uses the dramatic ice
skating scene to foreshadow the deterioration of the relationships with in the family that occurs with
the loss of Sethe s job.

Not long after the ice skating scene we see how Sethe begins to fall. Sethe s first major stumble deals
with the loss of her job. For many years Sethe was an extremely hard worker at a restaurant in town
and never missed a day of work in her life. However, after Beloved started becoming more dependent
upon Sethe, demanding more and more from her mother, Sethe found it nearly impossible to maintain
a job. Sethe played games all day long with Beloved and she took to going to work later and later each
day until the predictable happened: Sawyer, her boss, told her not to come back (240). With the
termination from Sethe s job resulted in a feeling of apathy. Sethe wished to put all of her time and
energy into Beloved s happiness because of the terrible guilt she had inside. Sethe felt extremely
ashamed for killing her daughter. Therefore, Sethe would do anything for Beloved. Anything Beloved
was craving, Sethe made sure her daughter received. Beloved took advantage of her mother s behavior
and drained her of everything. Hours

Optometrist Research Paper
They stare deep into the eyes of many, making eye contact far beyond the normal limit. But they
should, because it is their job! Optometrists, or eye doctors, care for the eye and the visual system.
Optometrists diagnose and treat eye disorders and diseases, injuries, and visual problems. They are
probably most well known for prescribing glasses or contact lenses to patients with myopia
(nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness). Optometrists are very important to society as without
them, many people would not be able to see the world about them. Doctors of optometry, or ODs,

Defining The Divisions At One Time, Our Nation Is Divided...
Classifying the Divisions At one time, our Nation was divided by race and social class. Today, our
Nation is divided by the type of political party one identifies by or even by our stance on particular
issues. There are some, however, that get caught up in their generational past and use this occurrence
to identify by. Even more, some people classify themselves by their moral obligations, setting
standards that they may view as higher or different than their adversaries. Then there are those who
want to create new ideas and give their idea a fighting chance in this ever so active society. Therefore,
historical, modern, and principled issues classify the groups of topics that divide our Nation.
Historically, racism and equality have served to be the basis of issues that have stemmed and grown
from the constitution. Racism was a huge issue and is still seen as an issue even today. Although
equality is at the best point it has ever been, discrimination is still an immense problem. Recently, the
debate regarding the Confederate flag as a symbol for slavery sparked many opinions, demonstrating
the divisive nature of this issue. In her entry on the Huffington Post: Black Voices page, Hilary
Hanson (2015) reported that some people...feel the Dixie flag represents their Southern heritage. On
the contrary, some people feel as though the flag has been used as an explicit symbol of racism
(Hanson 2015). Between these divided groups, an argument has ensued as to whether the

Social Implications Of Animal Testing Essay
Social implications:
There are also positive and negative social implications. There is often not a huge amount of success
around animal testing. Things that work on animals often don t work and cannot prove to work on
humans. The testing of just one substance can involve using up to 800 animals, and could cost over $6
million. This proves that animal testing is expensive, time consuming, unpredictable, and not easily
reproducible. When an animal test doesn t end successfully it s costing a lot of money. This money
could be spent on more necessary things that would benefit the public. Animal testing can be
dangerous to society and the people who the drugs are tested on after the animals. Usually even if the
animal survives the experiment, it

Introduction Pam and Susan s is a discount department store that currently has 250 chain stores
located throughout the South. To sustain its recent continuous expansion into the Border States and
Southwest, identification of the sites for new stores has become an essential factor of its increasing
strategic planning. The current store decisions are based on the traditional process of estimating sales
potential with demographic analyses, site visits and studies by the company s real estate department. A
subjective approach was developed to classify the potential sites to the competitive type of the trading
zone. However, there are ongoing concerns regarding the subjectivity of the competitive type
classifications, and whether this method can predict sales potentials at new sites. The goal of this
project is to build a multiple regression model based on the census data obtained from stores trading
zones and individual stores, to effectively predict sales potentials at new sites. Data The gathered data
contains demographics and economics of the trading zones, and size, composition and sales of the
store. There is a total of 13 major categories of variables including population (%black, % Spanish

Movie, Rear Window, By Alfred Hitchcock
For every action a person takes, there is usually a purpose behind it. The riskier and more dangerous
an action, the more motive that individual must have to continue. Alfred Hitchcock s 1954 film, Rear
Window, is a riveting thriller that is based on Cornell Woolrich s short story It Had to be Murder . This
film tells a narrative about an adventurous photographer, Jeffries played by James Stewart, who after
breaking his leg is forced to remain shackled to a wheelchair within his home. To cope with boredom,
he takes the liberty of observing his neighbors through one of his windows. It is through this pastime
that he comes to believe that one of his neighbor might be guilty of murdering his wife. Throughout
the rest of the film Jeffries decides to investigate his neighbor, in an attempt to bring him to justice.
Jeffries is however met with skepticism and obstacles. While any other individual might have
succumbed to the skepticism, Jeffries does not. Throughout the film we come know his character
more, and we can analyze what part of his personality started the whole ordeal and which traits drives
him to finish his investigation. One of Jeffries trait that we learned about early on is that he is a daring
individual who likes adventure. We quickly learn this key information in the opening scenes of the
film, when we are informed that of the reason why he ended up with a broken leg. We are not given
many details on how the accident occurred, however we do know that the

Media Influence On Society
Media. What is it? How does it affect us? Why does it change us? Lots of people think that the media
of ours is a significant element in just who we re. Some people believe that it can alter an individual
throughout the lifetime of theirs. Through the years the press has experienced a severe impact on
modern society, an influence consequently astounding we do not detect its existence sometimes. The
media is essential to our civilization; we re many in the middle of the media. Every each day a lot of
peoples connect to media of many methods. Media is frequently described as signifying a channel of
communication. We to be a modern society soak up press coming from a multitude of forms, including
the internet, billboards, newspapers, magazines, radio, and television.
Mass media influences individuals differently due to various quantities of formats and exposure. It s a
type of socialization, holding a long term impact on each part of society. Because many people use

of ours. During this paper, I will explain the positive and negatives effects it has in today s society, and
how it impacts or self esteem and also, if that should change. The type of media I m going to focus on

Immigration Problems

American Lit B
Research Paper
27 September , 2017
In 2013, 13 percent of the U.S. population was foreign born. Current projections suggest that by 2065,
nearly one in five people in the United States will have been born outside the country (Hing 25).3
Immigration has been an integral part of the United States since its colonial days. Over a million legal
and illegal immigrants take up residence in the United States each year. With the country struggling to
support the huge intake of new comers, life in America has been suffering tremendously. The
excessive stress put upon the welfare system, overuse of the family reunification laws, and the
exploitation of employment based immigration are reasons for immigration reform. The American
Government is trying to solve the deep rooted problems of immigration including the 1965 law, Chain
immigration, and Latino immigration.
Some factors from the past are widely responsible for the present immigration problems in the United
States. A major cause for all of the problems is the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act. The 1965
Immigration law prioritized the relatives of U.S. citizens, while others were not able to settle in U.S.
(Salam 24).2 The biased national origin quotas of 1920s was replaced by the 1965 law, which focused
on family unification ( Hing 25).4 This Act has kept some restrictions for the immigration from
Europe and Asia. The law set numerical restrictions on visas at 170,000 per year. But, this law has

Greedlessness In Washington Irving s The Legend Of Sleepy...
Washington Irving wrote The Legend of Sleepy Hollow in 1820, which tells the story of Ichabod
Crane, a schoolmaster who persistently frightens himself with supernatural beings he supposes he sees
and hears on his way home from school. At one point in the story, Crane rivals for the love of a lady
with a man named Abraham Van Brunt. This man, known as Brom Bones to the townspeople, took
advantage of Ichabod Crane s credulousness to scare him out of town through a prank in which he
impersonated the dreaded Headless Horseman, the ghost of Sleepy Hollow. This caused Ichabod to
flee town out of terror. Ichabod Crane s characteristics of greed, superstition, and fearfulness ended up
causing his downfall. Ichabod Crane s greediness hindered his relationship with the townspeople,
consequently making some people, such as Brom Bones, more than happy to expel Crane from the
town, and others not sorry when he left. Ichabod had a great gluttonous appetite, so he lived
successively a week at a time with his pupils and their families, because they simply could not afford
to house such a gourmand. Moreover, he earned the distaste of the other men of the town while trying
to earn the affections of a lady named Katrina Van Tassel, whom he hoped to marry only because of
her wealth. He knew if he was to marry her, he would have many delicious meals awaiting him. The
pedagogue s mouth watered as he looked upon this sumptuous promise of luxurious winter fare.

declared this war to begin. He brought a great impact on Great Britain and France (History.com staff).
World War 2 started in September 1939 when both France and Britain declared war on Germany as a

With increasing competition, convergence of industries, deregulation and international trust laws,

The Battle Of Adolf Hitler And Joseph Stalin
Introduction Operation Uranus took place November 1942 around the city of Stalingrad. The German
sixth Army, fourth Panzer Division, and its supporting allies had been attacking Soviet forces in and
around Stalingrad since August 1942. Many historians think Adolf Hitler viewed a win in Stalingrad
as a political and symbolic defeat of the Soviets. During a meeting with Joseph Stalin in September
1942, Generals Vasilevsky, and Zhukov noted that the German sixth Army and the fourth Panzer
Division flanks were thin and poorly equipped. The Generals came up with a pincer offensive attack
designed to surround the German sixth Army and its subordinate commands in the city of Stalingrad.
It took the Soviet Army 4 days to surround the Germans. Once the Soviets surrounded the Germans,
they began to compress the German forces into the city, cutting off their supply channels and
ultimately resulting in the German 6th Armies surrender.
History
On August 23rd 1939 Germany and the Soviet Union agreed, and signed a ten year nonaggression
pact. During the signing of the nonaggression pact, Adolph Hitler and Joseph Stalin held secret
meetings and agreed to split Poland after its capture. Less than two weeks later, on September 1st
1939, Adolph Hitler Orders the German army to invade Poland from the north, in what many believe
was the actual start of World War II. After the invasion of Poland, France and Great Britain declared
war on Germany. On September 17th 1939, Stalin orders

Using Semantic Interference Effect On Comprehension And...
Rationale Being able to understand language and speak is quick and simple, however some slip ups
can occur in our language system in normal processes. This usually happens in comprehension and
production, where some errors are semantically linked to the intended word you d want to say, such as
saying or understanding cat when what you intentionally wanted to say was dog This type of semantic
interference effect would suggest that the processing stage that s involved in comprehension and
language production can overlap to a certain extent. In spite of there being similarities in semantic
interferences in word picture matching and picture naming tasks, the main point of the interferences
shows attributes to the semantic language system, in word picture matching and the lexical language
system in naming. Even though both of these tasks associate with the approach to the shared semantic
representation, the degree of where one of the interference arises is still to be made clear, reason being
is that the effects are usually measure alone. This is why I shall be investigating these interferences.
For the word picture matching task the confirmation from other researches conducted have shown that
the interferences emerges with the actual semantic system (Warrington and McCarthy, 1983, 1987;
Warrington and Cipolotti, 1996; Forde and Humphreys, 1997, 2007; Gotts and Plaut, 2002;
Campanella and Shallice, 2011). However for picture naming task the evidence from previous

The Non-Traditional Forms Of Addiction
Many people spend a ton of time, energy and imagination on their hobby , when in reality it is an
addiction. One way of describing an addiction would be to say that it refers to the continued use of a
mood altering substance or behavior despite adverse consequences. Addiction could include things
like electronics, drugs, alcohol, porn addiction, internet addiction, and being a workaholic. An
addiction can also take other non traditional forms such as being addicted to a TV show, movie series,
television/movie characters, actors, musicians/pop starts.
A more narrow definition of addiction would be to say that it involves a compulsive use of or mind
altering acts or substances. With this type of addiction the individual will have usually developed a
physical as well as psychological dependence on the behavior. Which will cause and an increased
tolerance for the behavior overtime. As time goes on they will need to keep on delving deeper, and ...

It begins to influences their ability to have positive effective relationships, as well as the quality of
their overall life. A person with an issue may feel shocked when they meet someone who doesn t
understand their plight. They are willing to give up sleep, cancel plans, their vocabulary and actions
revel around the addiction. Approaching a person with an addiction can be difficult because they do
not see the behavior as an issue or want to hear what others have to say about it.
I approach a person with an addiction by first, obtaining some kind of professional advice about how
to approach them. I would not be judgmental or try and lecture them, I would be as honest and
straightforward as I could be while expressing how much their actions impact them and those around
them. I would be conscious that it is never easy to give up a habit good or bad. I would be calm and
empathetic while getting my point

The Pros And Cons Of The Fukushima Nuclear Disaster
An atom is the fundamental block of all matter, atoms are composed of smaller subatomic particles
neutrons, [Neutral], protons [Positive (+)] and electrons [negative ( )]. Nuclear energy is the energy
formed from the nucleus of an atom through different methods as fission (which is the way in which
an atom is split into smaller subatomic particles by hitting its nucleus with a neutron) and fusion
(which is the process in which new heavier atoms and large amounts of energy are produced by
bonding atoms together). (Nuclear Energy).Nuclear energy has various pros and cons, some of its
advantages are that it reduces global warming as a result of decreasing greenhouse gases emission and

have diseases as anxiety and depression, problems in pregnancy, related to deficiency of iodine in the
body, and some hormones not functioning properly, all these causes might lead to still birth, and
miscarriage and finally, radiation syndrome which is caused because of the release of massive
amounts of radiation, spread of cancer (as thyroid cancer) because of radiation, and ascend of genetic

T-Shirt In The Global Economy
In her book The Travels of a T Shirt in the Global Economy, Pietra Rivoli explores the journey that a
T shirt makes while being produced and the effects it has on the global economy. She begins by
explaining that the US continues to dominate in the cotton industry, even after 200 years. She
introduces the reader to Lubbock, Texas the cottenest city in the US (5). The author explains that US
domination in the cotton industry is due to a variety of reasons which she spends the rest of the
chapter exploring and explaining. The first reason, she explains, is due to the subsidies that farmers in
the US receive. She then goes on to explain that the American farmers have the ability to creatively
adapt to changing technology, methods, marketing and global demands. ... Show more content on

Lastly, Rivoli explains that the cotton industry is embedded in a set of institutions that insulate it from
the full strength of a variety of market forces (8). The cotton industry receives help and protection
from the US government, universities and technology companies allowing it a level of protection not
found in many other industries. In the second chapter, the author explores the history of the cotton
industry. She explains that with the beginning of the industrial revolution, British demand for cotton
reached extremely high levels thereby creating a huge and profitable market for cotton. Yet, this does
not explain how the US became the top exporter of cotton. Rivoli explains a variety of

Essay about A Sand County Almanac
A Sand County Almanac
Would I recommend A Sand County Almanac to someone I know? Depending upon who it was, I
would definitely recommend this book. I think I would suggest this book for someone who enjoys the
outdoors. But someone who does not appreciate the outdoors, in my opinion, would not get as much
out of the book. The reason I would recommend this book is because I thought it did a splendid job
describing the tinniest things and making them interesting. Who would have known that reading about
chickadees feeding or describing a bur oak would be interesting to read? The first part of the book is
broken down into months, while the final part really goes into Leopold s land ethics. Parts I and II of

What exactly is land ethics? According to Leopold, Land ethics expands the boundaries of ethics by
including soils, waters, plants, and animals, (Leopold, page 239). However, a land ethic cannot
prevent the alteration, management, and the use of the resources stated above. Basically, Leopold
states that land ethics change the role that we humans play from that of a land conqueror to that of a
citizen and member. In class, we learned that land ethics imply respect for the surrounding
community. We as humans are important, and thus, have more responsibility to protect the
environment.
Leopold s land pyramid describes the hierarchical dynamics of the biotic community. Based upon
what we learned in class, a biotic community is the relationship between soil and animals. It is a sum
of all the parts within the community. The pyramid represents layers within the biotic community. The
bottom layer is the soil. A plant layer rests upon the soil layer, an insect layer lies atop the plants, a
bird and rodent layer rests upon the insects. The pyramid works its way up the various animal groups
until it finally comes to the peak layer, which consists of the lager carnivorous animals. Leopold
places humans in the top layer.
There was one idea in particular that really struck me in this book. Though it is merely a story in part
II and not a main

Management plays a vital role for small companies, large corporations, and any other business type.
They help assist in making sure that a task is completed in the correct manner that benefits the
company in many matters to include legal. Most who think about management today, assume they
have a lot of responsibility, to include the ability to lead with great leadership skills acquired through
schooling and knowledge. Fortunately for these leaders, these management skillsets were not just
acquired overnight, they were developed and tested over a long period of time through trial and error
before being taught at an accredited institution or published for others to utilize. Therefore, there have
been many theories and milestones that have developed through time, which have assisted in shaping
management into how it functions today. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

decided, after retiring, to share his knowledge and tools with other companies if they wanted to also be

Beck s Theory Of Psychodynamic Research
History and Uses
Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) grew out of dissatisfaction of certain therapists with traditional
psychoanalysis. Aaron Beck and Albert Ellis were both instrumental in the development of this
approach to psychotherapy (Van Bilsen, p. 7), though Beck, a psychoanalyst, is primarily credited with
its development. Beck did research on depression, in the 1950 s, which was intended to give evidence
in support of the theory that retroflected hostility was at the root of depression, but the research failed
to confirm his hypothesis. As a result, he expanded his research on depression and came to the
realization that depressed subjects held predictably negative thoughts about themselves, the future and
the world around ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Beck, p. 3) Later in the book, he quotes the Stoic emperor, Marcus Aurelius as saying, If thou are
pained by any external thing, it is not the thing that disturbs thee, but thine own judgement about it.
And it is in thy power to wipe out this judgement now (Marcus Aurelius, quoted in A.T. Beck, p. 263)
In general, the Stoic philosophers believed that we should recognize the difference between things we
have power over and things that we have no power over. They taught that people are best served when
they put their energy into dealing with the things that lie within their control. This idea is succinctly
illustrated in the Serenity Prayer, used in numerous support groups. (Robertson, p. 20) One could say
that Beck s chief accomplishment was to take truths that had been known for centuries and apply them
in a way that was therapeutic. Although Ellis, Beck (and a few others) get a great deal of credit for the
creation of CBT, they freely admit to being influenced, not only by the ancient philosophers, but also
by earlier practitioners of the burgeoning art of psychotherapy. For example, referring to Paul Dubois
work around the turn of the century, Ellenberger said Dubois told of his method of treating phobias.
Emotions, he said, always follow ideas, so the treatment should go to the root, namely, the erroneous
idea the patient has allowed to creep into his mind (Ellenberger,

Advantage And Advantages Of Airplanes
I. INTRODUCTION Vertical Take off and Landing (VTOL) and Short Take off and Landing (STOL)
flight has been one of the main interests of both the civilian and military aviation communities
throughout the history of flight. The first patented VTOL design concept was by Nikola Tesla in 1928.
In May 1951, Lockheed and Convair were awarded contracts in the attempt to design, construct, and
test two experimental VTOL fighters. As a result, Lockheed produced the XFV, and Convair produced
the Convair XFY Pogo, nicknamed the Pogo . Both experimental programs proceeded to flight status
and completed test flights 1954 1955. Similarly, the X 13 flew a series of test flights between 1955
and 1957. But due to much higher complexity, cost and low ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Another advantage, both to operators and to nearby residents, is the large reduction in ground noise
level made possible by the utilization of the steep descent and climb out capability of the VTOL
aircraft. The VTOL airplane has great potential value in its military applications too. The most obvious
advantage is its utilization in delivering ground troops and supplies, the requirement being only that a
clearing of sufficient size exist in a reasonably level region. Tactical close air support VTOL airplanes
can operate in close proximity to zones of action out of these same clearings, thus reducing the time
required to deliver ordnance on a target, or the number of airplanes required airborne on station.
Destruction of or damage to airfield runways loses significance if the aircraft utilizing the field have a
VTOL capability. Consistent with weight and size limitations, each VTOL airplane is capable of
shipboard operations, without the requirement for arresting hooks, catapult fittings, and the usually
associated structural beef up. By the same token, many ships, with the relatively simple addition of a
landing area, are capable of operating VTOL airplanes without the requirement for heavy and
complicated arresting

Most Kenyans are heavy tea and coffee drinkers and do not consider a meal to be complete without
chai.
Nigerians generally have a wider variety of food than Kenyans, partly due to the Nigerian tropical
climate and vegetation that offers a larger variation of foods in comparison to the mostly dry and
unfertile land of Kenya. The common items on the Nigerian menu range from various finger foods to
more filling items. The finger foods include chin chin, crunchy little donuts cut into tiny squares about
one centimeter long and one centimeter wide, kose, little fried bean cakes with onions and red
peppers, suya, kabobs that are generously seasoned with cayenne pepper and staked on sticks between
slices of tomatoes, and fried sweet plantains lightly sprinkled with salt. The more filling foods include
pounded yams and egusi soup. Yams, the staple crop in Nigeria, are like gigantic potatoes often the
length of a grown man s arm. The yams are boiled and then pounded in a mortar to create a dish
dissimilar in taste but similar in looks to mashed potatoes. Egusi soup is prepared from a melon seed
that is ground into a powder and then combined with palm oil, crayfish, fresh fish, stock fish, spinach
leaves, and either chicken or beef. A choice of pounded yam or rice is always offered. Rice in different
forms will be prepared: plain white rice with a tomato stew, jollof rice prepared with tomato sauce and
carrots, peas, and

The American Civil War Is No Exception
Every war has at least one pivotal point that begs the question, What if this event had happened
differently? The American Civil War is no exception. Many Southerners made claims that the winning
of the Battle of Shiloh could have won the entire war for the Confederacy. Because they lost, however,
debate is still had about who is really to blame for the failure at Shiloh. Many try to pinpoint the blame
to one specific factor whether that be the leadership under General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard
following General Albert Sidney Johnston s death, the intel that was far below par, or the equipment
the Confederate soldiers had to use. In reality, it was a combination between all these factors that
would seal the Confederates fate. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On April 3, Gen. Johnston mobilized his troops and marched towards Pittsburg Landing where they
arrived on April 6 because of road and whether conditions. At 5:00 AM, Johnston launched a surprise
attack on the unsuspecting Union camps. Because the divisions that had little to no experience were in
the area where the attack was first made, the Confederates quickly broke through many Union lines
successfully and wreaked havoc. They stormed the camps and slaughtered many of these men in their
tents. The Union forces were pushed back at their flanks. One line, however, stood firm against the
Confederate onslaught. General Benjamin M. Prentiss held his line and did not allow the Confederates
to break through while fighting in a sunken road that is estimated to be about 3 feet deep in what is
known as the The Hornet s Nest while waiting for reinforcements.
By the end of the first day of fighting, it seemed clear that the Confederates dominated the North by
inflicting a high number of casualties and had nearly wiped out Grant s entire force. The South
suffered an even more monumental blow that day in the death of General Albert Sidney Johnston.
Johnston was fatally shot in the leg just outside the Hornet s Nest and bled to death shortly thereafter.
As a four star general, he is still the highest ranking officer killed in

The Primordial Soup Hypothesis
All of these hypotheses are similar and different in many ways. They were all similar in the way that
they revealed many possible ways of how the world started. They were all different, because they
were all different theories of how biomolecules came to be. As technology continues to evolve along
with the world many new ideas of how biomolecules came to be are sure to come up. This helps
increase out knowledge of the world and how it came to be.
The first of the biomolecule hypotheses was the Primordial Soup Hypothesis. The theory of the
Primordial Soup Hypothesis was that, life began in a body of water due to a mix of chemicals in the
atmosphere and a type of energy from amino acids. The scientists ... Show more content on

In 1977, scientists found biological life forms surviving around the sea floor. This suggested the
possibility that the vents provided biological life with the things they needed in order to survive. They
that suggested methanethiol (sulfur containing carbon compound) was the starter dough from which
all life emerged. The first people to test this hypothesis was geochemists, Eoghan Reeves, Jeff
Seewald, and Jill McDermott. They went to the hydrothermal vent sites, there they predicted that they
would find abundant methanethiol, their results had surprised them. Reeves said that their claim from
before was false, What we essentially found in our survey is that we don t think methanethiol is
forming by purely chemical means without the involvement of life. However, the scientists still
believe that hydrothermal vents are a great environment for new life to emerge.
The fourth of the biomolecule hypotheses was the RNA World Hypothesis. The RNA World
Hypothesis was proposed by Francis Crick in 1967. The hypothesis was that life begins with self
replicating RNA molecules. According to Crick s hypothesis genetic information is stored by RNA
and the RNA catalyzed the chemical reactions in primitive cells. However, later in time DNA took
over as genetic material and proteins became the structural components of cells. RNA still catalyzes
several reactions in modern day cells, which can be viewed as molecular fossils of an entire

It was founded by the French in 1764 when Auguste Chouteau established a fur trading post and Pierre Laclède Liguest, a New Orleans merchant, founded a town at the present site. They named it after King Louis XV of France and his patron saint, Louis IX. From 1770 to 1803, St. Louis was a Spanish possession, but it was ceded back to France in 1803 in accordance with the Treaty of San Ildefonso (1800), only to be acquired by the U.S. as part of the Louisiana Purchase later that year. The St. Louis World s Fair (1904), which was held in Forest Park, captured global attention as it displayed various technological developments. The fair celebrated the centennial of the Louisiana Purchase and transformed Forest Park into a veritable fairyland of white palaces, lagoons, and landscaping, attracting 20,000,000 visitors to the City. The fair focused worldwide attention on St. Louis and caused increased construction of new hotels, office buildings, and homes, which continued until World War I. • 5. Defining The Divisions At One Time, Our Nation Is Divided... Classifying the Divisions At one time, our Nation was divided by race and social class. Today, our Nation is divided by the type of political party one identifies by or even by our stance on particular issues. There are some, however, that get caught up in their generational past and use this occurrence to identify by. Even more, some people classify themselves by their moral obligations, setting standards that they may view as higher or different than their adversaries. Then there are those who want to create new ideas and give their idea a fighting chance in this ever so active society. Using Multiple Regression Project For New Stores Multiple Regression Project Jay Ma MGSC6200, 50839 Facilitator: Ike Papadopoulos 05JUL2015 Introduction Pam and Susan s is a discount department store that currently has 250 chain stores located throughout the South. To sustain its recent continuous expansion into the Border States and Southwest, identification of the sites for new stores has become an essential factor of its increasing strategic planning. The current store decisions are based on the traditional process of estimating sales potential with demographic analyses, site visits and studies by the company s real estate department. A subjective approach was developed to classify the potential sites to the competitive type of the trading zone. However, there are ongoing concerns regarding the subjectivity of the competitive type classifications, and whether this method can predict sales potentials at new sites. The goal of this project is to build a multiple regression model based on the census data obtained from stores trading zones and individual stores, to effectively predict sales potentials at new sites. Current projections suggest that by 2065, nearly one in five people in the United States will have been born outside the country (Hing 25).3 Immigration has been an integral part of the United States since its colonial days. Over a million legal and illegal immigrants take up residence in the United States each year. With the country struggling to support the huge intake of new comers, life in America has been suffering tremendously. The excessive stress put upon the welfare system, overuse of the family reunification laws, and the exploitation of employment based immigration are reasons for immigration reform. The American Government is trying to solve the deep rooted problems of immigration including the 1965 law, Chain immigration, and Latino immigration. Some factors from the past are widely responsible for the present immigration problems in the United States. A major cause for all of the problems is the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act. The 1965 Immigration law prioritized the relatives of U.S. citizens, while others were not able to settle in U.S. (Salam 24).2 The biased national origin quotas of 1920s was replaced by the 1965 law, which focused on family unification ( Hing 25).4 This Act has kept some restrictions for the immigration from Europe and Asia. • 17. Greedlessness In Washington Irving s The Legend Of Sleepy... Washington Irving wrote The Legend of Sleepy Hollow in 1820, which tells the story of Ichabod Crane, a schoolmaster who persistently frightens himself with supernatural beings he supposes he sees and hears on his way home from school. At one point in the story, Crane rivals for the love of a lady with a man named Abraham Van Brunt. This man, known as Brom Bones to the townspeople, took advantage of Ichabod Crane s credulousness to scare him out of town through a prank in which he impersonated the dreaded Headless Horseman, the ghost of Sleepy Hollow. This caused Ichabod to flee town out of terror. Ichabod Crane s characteristics of greed, superstition, and fearfulness ended up causing his downfall. Ichabod Crane s greediness hindered his relationship with the townspeople, consequently making some people, such as Brom Bones, more than happy to expel Crane from the town, and others not sorry when he left. Ichabod had a great gluttonous appetite, so he lived successively a week at a time with his pupils and their families, because they simply could not afford to house such a gourmand. Moreover, he earned the distaste of the other men of the town while trying to earn the affections of a lady named Katrina Van Tassel, whom he hoped to marry only because of her wealth. He knew if he was to marry her, he would have many delicious meals awaiting him. The pedagogue s mouth watered as he looked upon this sumptuous promise of luxurious winter fare. • 23. The Battle Of Adolf Hitler And Joseph Stalin Introduction Operation Uranus took place November 1942 around the city of Stalingrad. The German sixth Army, fourth Panzer Division, and its supporting allies had been attacking Soviet forces in and around Stalingrad since August 1942. Many historians think Adolf Hitler viewed a win in Stalingrad as a political and symbolic defeat of the Soviets. During a meeting with Joseph Stalin in September 1942, Generals Vasilevsky, and Zhukov noted that the German sixth Army and the fourth Panzer Division flanks were thin and poorly equipped. The Generals came up with a pincer offensive attack designed to surround the German sixth Army and its subordinate commands in the city of Stalingrad. It took the Soviet Army 4 days to surround the Germans. Once the Soviets surrounded the Germans, they began to compress the German forces into the city, cutting off their supply channels and ultimately resulting in the German 6th Armies surrender. History On August 23rd 1939 Germany and the Soviet Union agreed, and signed a ten year nonaggression pact. During the signing of the nonaggression pact, Adolph Hitler and Joseph Stalin held secret meetings and agreed to split Poland after its capture. Less than two weeks later, on September 1st 1939, Adolph Hitler Orders the German army to invade Poland from the north, in what many believe was the actual start of World War II. • 24. Using Semantic Interference Effect On Comprehension And... Rationale Being able to understand language and speak is quick and simple, however some slip ups can occur in our language system in normal processes. This usually happens in comprehension and production, where some errors are semantically linked to the intended word you d want to say, such as saying or understanding cat when what you intentionally wanted to say was dog This type of semantic interference effect would suggest that the processing stage that s involved in comprehension and language production can overlap to a certain extent. In spite of there being similarities in semantic interferences in word picture matching and picture naming tasks, the main point of the interferences shows attributes to the semantic language system, in word picture matching and the lexical language system in naming. Even though both of these tasks associate with the approach to the shared semantic representation, the degree of where one of the interference arises is still to be made clear, reason being is that the effects are usually measure alone. This is why I shall be investigating these interferences. For the word picture matching task the confirmation from other researches conducted have shown that the interferences emerges with the actual semantic system (Warrington and McCarthy, 1983, 1987; Warrington and Cipolotti, 1996; Forde and Humphreys, 1997, 2007; Gotts and Plaut, 2002; Campanella and Shallice, 2011). Aaron Beck and Albert Ellis were both instrumental in the development of this approach to psychotherapy (Van Bilsen, p. 7), though Beck, a psychoanalyst, is primarily credited with its development. Beck did research on depression, in the 1950 s, which was intended to give evidence in support of the theory that retroflected hostility was at the root of depression, but the research failed to confirm his hypothesis. Beck, p. 263) In general, the Stoic philosophers believed that we should recognize the difference between things we have power over and things that we have no power over. They taught that people are best served when they put their energy into dealing with the things that lie within their control. This idea is succinctly illustrated in the Serenity Prayer, used in numerous support groups. The finger foods include chin chin, crunchy little donuts cut into tiny squares about one centimeter long and one centimeter wide, kose, little fried bean cakes with onions and red peppers, suya, kabobs that are generously seasoned with cayenne pepper and staked on sticks between slices of tomatoes, and fried sweet plantains lightly sprinkled with salt. The more filling foods include pounded yams and egusi soup. Yams, the staple crop in Nigeria, are like gigantic potatoes often the length of a grown man s arm. The yams are boiled and then pounded in a mortar to create a dish dissimilar in taste but similar in looks to mashed potatoes. Egusi soup is prepared from a melon seed that is ground into a powder and then combined with palm oil, crayfish, fresh fish, stock fish, spinach leaves, and either chicken or beef. A choice of pounded yam or rice is always offered. Rice in different forms will be prepared: plain white rice with a tomato stew, jollof rice prepared with tomato sauce and carrots, peas, and ... • 34. The American Civil War Is No Exception Every war has at least one pivotal point that begs the question, What if this event had happened differently? The American Civil War is no exception. Many Southerners made claims that the winning of the Battle of Shiloh could have won the entire war for the Confederacy. Because they lost, however, debate is still had about who is really to blame for the failure at Shiloh. Many try to pinpoint the blame to one specific factor whether that be the leadership under General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard following General Albert Sidney Johnston s death, the intel that was far below par, or the equipment the Confederate soldiers had to use. In reality, it was a combination between all these factors that would seal the Confederates fate. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On April 3, Gen. Johnston mobilized his troops and marched towards Pittsburg Landing where they arrived on April 6 because of road and whether conditions. At 5:00 AM, Johnston launched a surprise attack on the unsuspecting Union camps. Because the divisions that had little to no experience were in the area where the attack was first made, the Confederates quickly broke through many Union lines successfully and wreaked havoc. They stormed the camps and slaughtered many of these men in their tents. The Union forces were pushed back at their flanks. One line, however, stood firm against the Confederate onslaught. General Benjamin M. Prentiss held his line and did not allow the Confederates to break through while fighting in a sunken road that is estimated to be about 3 feet deep in what is known as the The Hornet s Nest while waiting for reinforcements. By the end of the first day of fighting, it seemed clear that the Confederates dominated the North by inflicting a high number of casualties and had nearly wiped out Grant s entire force. The South suffered an even more monumental blow that day in the death of General Albert Sidney Johnston. Johnston was fatally shot in the leg just outside the Hornet s Nest and bled to death shortly thereafter. As a four star general, he is still the highest ranking officer killed in ... • 35. The Primordial Soup Hypothesis All of these hypotheses are similar and different in many ways. They were all similar in the way that they revealed many possible ways of how the world started. They were all different, because they were all different theories of how biomolecules came to be. As technology continues to evolve along with the world many new ideas of how biomolecules came to be are sure to come up. This helps increase out knowledge of the world and how it came to be. The first of the biomolecule hypotheses was the Primordial Soup Hypothesis. The theory of the Primordial Soup Hypothesis was that, life began in a body of water due to a mix of chemicals in the atmosphere and a type of energy from amino acids. The scientists ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1977, scientists found biological life forms surviving around the sea floor. This suggested the possibility that the vents provided biological life with the things they needed in order to survive. They that suggested methanethiol (sulfur containing carbon compound) was the starter dough from which all life emerged. The first people to test this hypothesis was geochemists, Eoghan Reeves, Jeff Seewald, and Jill McDermott. They went to the hydrothermal vent sites, there they predicted that they would find abundant methanethiol, their results had surprised them. Reeves said that their claim from before was false, What we essentially found in our survey is that we don t think methanethiol is forming by purely chemical means without the involvement of life. However, the scientists still believe that hydrothermal vents are a great environment for new life to emerge. The fourth of the biomolecule hypotheses was the RNA World Hypothesis. The RNA World Hypothesis was proposed by Francis Crick in 1967. The hypothesis was that life begins with self replicating RNA molecules. According to Crick s hypothesis genetic information is stored by RNA and the RNA catalyzed the chemical reactions in primitive cells. However, later in time DNA took over as genetic material and proteins became the structural components of cells. RNA still catalyzes several reactions in modern day cells, which can be viewed as molecular fossils of an entire ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
