Proteins are synthesized through a complex process involving transcription, translation, and protein targeting. Messenger RNA carries the genetic code from DNA in the nucleus to the ribosomes in the cytoplasm, where amino acids are assembled into proteins based on the mRNA sequence. Signals on the amino acid chain direct newly-formed proteins to their proper destinations within or outside the cell through specialized targeting mechanisms.
