It Was A Nice, Spring Day
It was a nice, spring day in Colorado. Anicia, my wonderful, sarcastic best friend, and I had just gotten
out of school. To the left was the mountains, looking beautiful with just a bit of snow on top of them
and the sun shining from behind. Behind me was the school with hundreds of kids rushing to make it
on the buses in time. Anicia and I were on the way to talk to some of our friends Thomas, Tristan, and
Lexi about some random science project we had to do has a group, which never did get turned in by
the way. Thomas kept suggesting, Let s just go to Alyssa s house and make a video about what to and
what not to do during a lab. But everyone didn t like that idea and kept disagreeing. I was bored out of
my mind. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But for some strange reason, I felt the need to jump on it. I looked around to see if Anicia was still
talking to our friends, she was. But I didn t even realize that there were maintenance people just
working on it and that the lid was pretty crooked. So I jump on it. Within seconds the lid moves and I
fall straight through! Since there were maintenance people who just had worked on it and didn t put
the lid back on correctly, I fell in this hole that happens to be a sewer. Well uh oh, I said to myself. I
was just sitting in the sewer looking up at all the people while Anicia was completely oblivious to the
fact that I wasn t with her and that instead, I was in a sewer. But after all, she is my best friend, so she
has gotten pretty good at ignoring me when need be. I ended up watching a short girl with long
tangled black hair, glasses, a hoodie, and headphones walk all the way to my house. I tried to yell
HEY ANICIA! but as she was wearing headphones she didn t hear me and assumed I was all the way
home already. Well Anicia, made it all the way to my house. She walked in since it was pretty much
her house too. She walks in and yells Hi Mom! to my mom downstairs. My mom assumed that I was
with her too, so she yelled back Hey girls! Anicia didn t think anything of it and went into our upstairs
kitchen and made herself some food and went to the upstairs living room and turned on Netflix. She
tried to get on Netflix when she

People, Power, Politics of Dred Scott vs. Sanford
People, Power, Politics of Dred Scott v. Sanford The American court system has effectively used
technicalities in cases they want a winning decision in since the conception of the United States of
America. No other example concerning slavery is better illustrates this than Dred Scott v. Sanford.
This case has become infamous not only because the decision, but because it was a major stepping
stone made in the progress of getting equal rights for negroes. Loopholes in the constitution ultimately
kept Scott a slave, but he made monumental progress in 1857 when he went to the Supreme Court and
attempted to sue for his own freedom. The Dred Scott V. Sanford case talks about what came of his
case and what he was suing for and the loophole used by the Federal court system. During a time of
uncertainty for the nation, at the helm of this uncertainty was the negro man during the abolitionist
movements and the exact rights they haven t been given until post the civil war. Slavery had been the
central issue of the civil war. During the abolitionist movement, slavery was a revisited issue and now
not only Negros opposed it, but many Northern white men as well. The abolitionist movement had
begun to transform northern public opinion: many citizens now firmly opposed slaveries extensions to
any of the territories North, or South. as stated by Corey Robin (107), who introduces the Dred Scott
v. Sanford case. Though the negroes gained more support through northern

Female Circumcision In Africa
Normally, female circumcision (also known as female genital mutilation) is not the topic of discussion
most people would talk about, but for once it should be. Female circumcision is the cutting or removal
of parts or maybe even all of the female genital region. This can take place during a wide range
starting from when a baby girl is first brought into this world all the way until puberty. The genital
mutilation can be performed by an elderly woman in the village or if the family is wealthy, the surgery
can be done by a professional doctor. After the painful surgery, a ritual is held to honor the young girl
for her rite of passage . According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are four main
types: clitoridectomy, excision, infibulation, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, in order for a young woman to inherit land and get married, she had to be circumcised
(Female Genital Mutilation 17). It is believed that being circumcised is a way to ensure that the girl is
pure and stays pure until she is wed off. Africa is mostly male dominant so it is often times, the man s
right to go have his daughter circumcised so when she does become a wife, she can satisfy the man.
This is usually resulted due to the mother s social status as where she cannot speak out against it. It is
very seldom, as well, that a girl will volunteer to have this done to her due to peer pressure. If one was
not circumcised, then she could not be wed and would be looked down upon by the people in her
village. Furthermore, the surgery may be forced upon because a family member who is concern about
the disgrace that could be brought upon the family s reputation, may secretly have the girl circumcised
without the mother even knowing. Possibly originating in Africa, which there is no known evidence, a
female undergoes circumcision. Female circumcision is a process of which various alterations to her
genital area. is occurred during anytime in a girl s life once she is born until she reaches puberty. She
may just have part of her clitoris removed or she may have her clitoris, labia minora, and labia majora
removed. All of this is done so she can

An Essay On The Parthenon
The Parthenon, a temple of the Doric order, is one of the greatest artistic accomplishments of the fifth
century. The Parthenon is viewed without mythological reference and stands far outside the normal
Greek temple decoration, which is commonly known to derive its subject matter from the mythical
past. (Connelly 53) The Parthenon is different from most other Grecian art of the fifth century and is
truly beautiful. One of the greatest reasons the Parthenon is set apart as a great feat in Grecian art is
due to its different stylization and the fact that the entire temple is built from the finest white marble
throughout the entire piece, including the roof. (Stockstad) The Parthenon is a gorgeous testament to
the Athenian citizenry participating in their annual (or quadrennial) Panathenaic procession. ... Show

The entire temple is made of three main types of marble. The first marble type is known by the name
of Pentelikon, it is an off white color, is not a very fine marble type (sturdy), and was most likely used
because it was local, cheap, and preserved well due to the fact that its harder to carve. This marble
type was the main marble used throughout the Parthenon. The second marble type used on the temple
is known by the name Hynettin, it is bluish in color and was carved on location in Situ and the third
marble type is known as Pernian, these two marble types were used sparingly in comparison to the
Pentelikon but nevertheless were still as important. The other main materials used to pull off this eye

The Effects Of Binge Drinking On College
One of my youth pastors told the teens at church on a Wednesday night, Don t start a habit in your
younger years that is going to control the way you live your adult years . Whenever I heard this
statement, I thought of teens binge drinking in college. College drinking has become a major issue for
people under the age of twenty one. Binge drinking becomes addicting, especially for people under the
age of twenty one. Understanding the problem and consequences of binge drinking will help to show
that lowering the drinking age will not help the problem. Binge drinking in college is when students
consume an excessive amount of alcohol in a short period of time. This can happen because of parties,
meeting new friends, even being in a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Along with binge drinking comes consequences. The most common cause for deaths in car accidents
is drinking and driving. In Roan s book, Roan states, In 1984, a federal standard was established
setting the minimum legal drinking age at 21. Since then, traffic fatalities among drivers ages 18 to 20
have fallen by an estimated 13%, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
(Roan ). This statistic is one that shows how lowering the legal drinking age would not solve the
problem of binge drinking in college. Most people that are freshman in college start school at 18 or
19. As stated in the previous paragraph, these freshman attend parties or events with older people.
These students can be 21 or older and be able to buy alcohol. This can lead to underage drinking. If a
student does not live on campus, he or she will have to drive back to their house. They can be giving
friends a ride to wherever they need to go, or just driving around goofing off. If they have had an
excessive amount of alcohol, they can be endangering the lives of themselves, their friends lives, and
other people on the road. If they were to have a car accident, they could kill the other people in the
cars involved. They can then be charged with murder. Another consequence of binge drinking is
alcohol related death. In the same article by Roan, he talks about a

Abstract. As A Young Girl In Her Adolescent, Horney Karen
Abstract
As a young girl in her adolescent, Horney Karen was raised under harsh conditions as written in her
diaries, her parents as she describes them as a cruel disciplinary figure held Karen s brother higher
than her, this made her feel less loved and became rebellious at an early age. Lack of parental love.
This could have led Karen to study more about the theory of personality, this paper, therefore, looks at
Horney s theory of personality and how one s life at a younger age affect their personality and relation
with others. This paper looks at Karen s take on other people s work about neurosis and his
contribution too in neurosis

Horney Karen (1942) said the take of men on women being pregnant, motherhood, breastfeeding, and
breasts lead to men devaluing women. She stated that the self is what determined one s being. That is,
if a person had an accurate revelation of themselves, they had a chance to realize and live to their
potential.
As a psychiatrist, Horney Karen developed a pattern of needs that were derived from neurosis. The
needs were based on the things Karen thought people required to be what they required in life.
According to Karen, people should have to have two views of themselves, one the real self and the
ideal self, whereby the real self is who one is and what they are. Whereby the real self has one s
potential for growth, the potential for happiness and power. The ideal self is, on the other hand, is used
to help the real self to develop one s potential and achievement of self. Horney came up with an
illustration explaining between the real self, despised and the ideal selves,
Self realization vacillation

By getting a veteran to talk about what they have experienced in the military is hard because they see
and experience things that no human being should every have to go through. Some of our veterans see
and experience things on a deployment that no one should ever experience, some people have no
choice but to put a bullet in a child s head because they are strapped with a bomb and have to decide
whose life is worth more the child s life or the life of themselves and the fellow military members.
Other people go through hazing of forms that our not seen on the news ever unless it is so bad that it

Cardiovascular Disease Essay
INTRODUCTION
This essay consists of a health issue relevant to Maori population. I identified cardiovascular disease
as the common health issue among Maori. The essay explores the details of CVD and relevant
demographics. The importance of treaty of Waitangi in this contest and the historical factors relevant
to CVD are explained. Finally, identified a significant health policy related to CVD and explained one
community health service related to the identified health strategy.
CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is considered as the most common disease condition among Maori.
CVD is a group of diseases include ischaemic heart disease (CHD), heart failure, rheumatic heart
disease, cerebrovascular disease (stroke) and other forms of vascular and heart disease (Northland
DHB, 2007).
Ischaemic heart disease: Ischaemic heart disease is one of the common type of cardiovascular disease
or heart disease in New Zealand and it may Cause angina, heart failure and myocardial infraction. In
2000 2004 New Zealand health survey reported that, around 18% of Maori deaths because of ischemic
heart disease whereas 23% of non Maori (Robson, B Harris, R. 2007).
Stroke: Stroke is also known as brain attack , is a sudden interruption of blood flow to a part of the
brain, causing damage to the brain cells. Stroke is the leading cause of mortality as well as disability
in New Zealand. The main risk factors are high blood pressure and smoking. Surveys show that

Explain the influences of two predictable and two unpredictable major life events on the development
of an individual
In this part of my assignment I will be looking at how both predictable and unpredictable major life
events can have an effect on a person s development.
Predictable A child starting school
*I spoke to a person who found the transition from Primary to Secondary school very difficult*
Physically Due to the difficulty she found adjusting to the new school, she began to eat less and less,
started making herself sick and began to suffer from panic attacks. These things didn t help the stress
of changing schools because she felt ill and weak and couldn t function while trying to complete
simple tasks.

Unpredictable Serious Injury
*I spoke to someone who damaged their knee*
Physical Whilst playing netball, this girl fell over, this was because he knee had dislocated. Before this
happened she would play any sport she could and was very active. The damage to her knee meant she
had to have a lot of operations to attempt to fix the problem. This is an on going problem, she has
difficulty walking and cannot use stairs, and because she cannot do much exercise she has gained a lot
of weight.
Intellectual As this problem had and still does affect her mobility she had to leave college as it was on
two different campuses. This meant she didn t get the qualifications she was expected to leave with.
This has contributed to the fact she cannot find work because she hasn t got the basic skills others
have who had finished their course at college. As she spent a lot of time at home she took up doing art,
which she had never really tried before, and now some of her designs are being used in tattoo parlours,
and she hopes to one day, train to be a tattoo artist.
Emotional unfortunately she began to develop a low confidence because of her weight gain, she
started to feel depressed because of all the time she had to spend at the hospital, for operations, check

Shear Wave Stress Analysis
Acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) technique has replaced the traditional stress strain
elastography where compression force is applied manually(Garra 2011). It can differentiate liver,
prostate and breast diseases(Tozaki and Fukuma 2011, Vermehren, et al. 2012, Yu and Wilson 2011,
Zhai, et al. 2012). ARFI elastography demonstrated a higher rate (99.8%) of accurate measurement in
cirrhosis as compared to transient elastography (78.6%)(Kircheis, et al. 2012). Shear wave velocity
(SWV) assessment associated with ARFI was then suggested to gauge tissue stiffness. It provides an
absolute stiffness value instead of a ratio relative to surrounding tissue. Liver stiffness measurement
by ARFI has a low inter observer variability with a high intra class ... Show more content on

Mexican Olympics Protest Of 1968 And The Protests
In formality to human existence, protesting has been a right for all humans to speak to their mind.
Some may say that the idea of revolting against injustices is embedded in our DNA; perhaps this may
be true, but regardless, protesting has been a sign for craving transformation. Dating back from
American Revolution to Black Lives matter, protest has been the only guaranteed freedom that gives
us a voice to alter our future. In retrospect, movements or protest such as Civil Rights Movement quite
literally changed the landscape of America for generations; speaking out towards the spiteful racism
that was so prevalent during those times leading to an importance in diversity. Similarly, Countries
around the world have conducted protest that has revolutionized the way of life or inspired future
generations. A clear distinction of this honor would be with Mexican Olympics protest of 1968, the
infamous protest that captured the world s attention. Public found themselves in a unique position in
viewing the Mexican youth stand up against the corruption of the Mexican Government. This social
unrest became a fundamental part of modern Mexican culture that has sparked transparency in their
government and transpired an unexpected deeper effect internationally. The time period around the
Summer Olympics in 1968 was a pivotal moment in Mexico. In fact, the Olympics games was a
monumental honor due to Mexico becoming the first Spanish speaking and developing country to host

The Fifth Symphony By Ludwig Van Beethoven
I have chosen to share three of my favorite pieces. Each piece is different by genre, artist, style, and
time. These three pieces should be familiar to most of the populations ears. I tried to choose different
types of pieces because I do not like to listen to the same artists or genre. My personal musical taste is
a variety of genres and choosing the three pieces represents my musical mixture. The Fifth Symphony
composed by Ludwig Van Beethoven is one of my favorite classical pieces. Beethoven was a famous
deaf composer and the most leading influential musical figure in the Romantic era. The Fifth
Symphony was written between 1804 and 1808. Beethoven held a concert to debut his pieces, but it
did not go as well as planned. The audience was bored and tired from sitting in the auditorium too
long that their interest level decreased. It was not until a critic by the name of E.T.A Hoffmann wrote a
review analyzing the symphony, in order to show his readers the particular affects Beethoven used to
create his music. The symphony soon began its popular status as being the central item in that time
period. The overall expression of this piece is about the struggle against inner soul searching and
winning the battle. Some listeners might perceive the following events: an encounter with a force or
struggle, a period of quiet soul searching, followed by a further wrestling with the blocking barrier,
and a victory over the combat while listening to this piece. I do not believe that

Wilfred Owen s Poems On The Futility Of War
Poems using strong poetic technique and devices are able to create a wide range of emotions from the
readers. Wilfred Owen s poetry effectively uses these poetic techniques and devices to not only create
unsettling images about war but to provide his opinion about war itself with the use of themes within
his poem. The use of these themes explored Owen s ideas on the futility of war and can be seen in the
poems: Anthem for Doomed Youth, Futility and The Next War. The poems provide unsettling images
and belief of war through the treatment of death, barbaric nature of war and the futility of war.
In majority of Owen s poem, he demonstrates the true image of war and the impact it has on the
soldiers rather than masking it with the lies of pride ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The idea of the futility of war can be seen in the poem Strange Meeting, where the persona creates a
scenario of two opposing soldiers having a conversation in Hell. The line, The pity of war, the pity
war distilled uses repetition with the word pity to imply the pity that is felt for the soldiers that have
died at war. The use of the word distilled is indicating how war is attracting the concentration of many
people and that the soldiers are dying for pointless reasons, intensifying the pity felt on the soldiers.
Futility of war is again demonstrated in Owen s poem, Futility, in the final stanza with the rhetorical
question, Was it for this the clay grew tall? Owen use of imagery of clay grew tall is making a biblical
reference to humans being made by clay and questioning was the creation of humankind futile due to
the recurring inevitability of war and suffering. In the previous lines, Owen compares the sun with
God and is desperate to bring his comrades back to life, Woke, once, the clays of a cold star The use of
the oxymoron is Owen indicating that the sun is now weaker than it was previously. Owen is
explaining how futile the sun was to provide life on Earth if it is unable to bring back the dead. The
reference to a cold star is highlighting the life that was brought to Earth has now turned cold due to it
being destroyed and killed from war. This presents Owen s idea of the futility of war as it will result in
the destruction of

Analisis of Human Exposure to Chloroform in a Hot Tub
Abstract Hot tubs are very popular across America due to their relaxation as well as health benefits.
Hot tubs have been attributed health benefits ranging from relief of muscle and joint pain, to help in
treatment of HIV and other viral infections. Because of this, many people own hot tubs and many
more go to health spas where they can use them. On the other hand, hot tubs are not that easy to
maintain. A consistent disinfectant level must be maintained in order to inhibit the growth of bacteria
which could cause infections to the people who use them. The disinfectant of choice for most hot tubs
is chlorine, mainly because of its effectiveness, persistence in the water, and the familiarity with its
properties. Since the 70 s, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The problem with chlorine is that it reacts with organic matter in water to form chloroform, a known
carcinogen. The efficiency of chlorines disinfection capabilities depends on the free chlorine in the
water. Free chlorine refers to the amount of chlorine in the water after the demand for chlorine in the
water has been satisfied. In other words, the free chlorine is the one that s available to disinfect or kill
microorganisms. Since the free chlorine in hot tub water is recommended to be around 3 5 ppm, this
means that there will be a higher concentration of chloroform in the tub water than in for example tap
water that has free chlorine level of only 1 2ppm when leaving the treatment plant. In addition the
high temperature of the water combined with the aeration by the jet bubbles will enhance the 2
volatilization of the chloroform into the air and this increases the exposure due to inhalation. The high
temperature of water will also increase dermal absorption of chloroform. Of special interest, are
wooden hot tubs. In this case, there is a constant source of organic matter(wood) for the chlorine to
react with, and therefore increased concentrations of chloroform. This study will try to prove the
hypothesis that using hot tubs, results in elevated exposures to chloroform due to various factors that

The Anglo Saxons prior to 1000AD were as a race fierce. They possessed great courage. Beowulf
reflects their fierceness and courage in a variety of ways. Beowulf complains to Unferth in the Danish

Persuasive Essay On Gun Violence
There has been a rise in gun violence in the United States for the past few years killing several victims
that gotten caught in cross fire, mass shootings, and in crime. In 2012, there were over a dozen mass
shooting incidents with two standing out as especially tragic. One of the shootings ended with 12
people dead and 58 others harmed and only tis amount because the shooter gun was jammed. The
second mass shooting involved a man not only killing his mom but also elementary school children
and some of the people working there, then later himself. With an increase of innocent people deaths
due to guns there has not been a change or an increase in gun laws to lowers the death rates. In the
State of Texas, it s citizens at the age 18 can walk in a store and buy a rifle without a license or any
background checks. They must be at least 21 years of age to purchase a gun that cannot be seen such
as a handgun. The other requirements are to be a resident of that state, have an identification card, a
completion of a handgun proficiency test by a qualified instructor. A person is not allowed to have a
weapon with a felony but can have a ticket and/or misdemeanor. After a purchase of a gun, that person
must keep it concealed and has a concealed license to carry it around on them but the clip must be out
of the gun when driving in a car. Before going in any stores there will be a sign that say no guns

Examples Of Selfishness In An Enemy Of The People
In Henrik Ibsen s An Enemy of the People, he showcases and explores theme of naivety and
selfishness lead to the wrong decisions throughout his play with the use of both detail and diction.
With these in mind, he demonstrates the significant value and importance of properly understanding
the truth and relevance in this play. The play begins in an unnamed town, in southern Norway.
In the play, Ibsen often portrays the main character, Dr. Thomas Stockmann, as an individual who is
not only naive and childish, but out of touch with his own reality. This allows the reader to perceive
these characteristics through his giddy actions and tone of voice. In Act I, Scene I, Dr. Stockmann
returns with company and says, Look here here is another guest for you, Katherine. Isn t that jolly!
(5). The readers very first impression of a man who is presumed to be professional and will end up
taking care of the town, is of a grown man who has just returned home and is more excited to
showcase the large amount of meat he has with due respect as they finally have the money to share
their meat. Later, he continues to showcase his newfound wealth by saying, ...and we have got a lamp
shade too. Do you see? All out of Katherine s savings! (7). While it is clear that Stockmann is still
excited to show off that he has money, he goes about this in a childish and condescending way. This is
one of the many consequences that can result from naivety. Although, that s not to say that he shouldn

about writing is to always keep your audience in mind, and adjust you writing style and language
accordingly. Also remember that writing is process which takes time to perfect. English has never
been one of my favorite subjects, mainly just because I never really consider myself to be a good
writer and by the normal standard I may not be. In a sense though, I found contrary to my belief that
my writing wasn t all that bad. Now it took time for me to see that for myself, because ... Show more

There some people that are incredibly street smart but do not fair so well in school but in Gerald Graff
s Hidden Intellectualism Graff argues that street smarts are just as important as book smarts. Graff
says that It is a matter of finding points of convergence and translation, moments when student
discourse can be translated into academic discourse and vice versa, producing a kind of bilingualism
on both sides of the student teacher divide (Graff, Hidden Intellectualism). In other words, for a
student with street smarts to learn to read academically, students need to read things that interest them,
encouraging them to dive into their reading, forming an opinion and arguing their point. When you
think about it this does makes sense, you can t get that student to read more intellectual readings
without first starting with something that interest them and then let them naturally move toward more
intellectual reading. I myself was this way in high school, I was always uninterested in the required
readings. Many times, failed to even read them and when I did it was just to get a grade. I never really
formed my own opinion of the reading, except for the fact that I just didn t like it. However, when we
could pick our own reading material, something that interested me, I was more drawn in and able to
form my own opinion, caring about what I was reading. By doing so this allows students with street
smarts, to not only become drawn toward the more intellectual reading, it will get to a point where
they want to argue their points and form their own opinions. The question though is being street smart
better than book smart, and in my opinion, this can be situational, depending on what you are doing
would determine which one is better but when coupled they work well together. In writing which
would you rather have, someone who can express their opinion, and

The Discovery Of A New Science
The Discovery of a New Science
A Brief History
Physiology has piqued human curiosity for thousands of years. In the early centuries, examination and
dissection of the human body was a taboo practice and consequently became mired due to ethical or
religious concerns. Scientist had no choice but to undertake inconceivable acts, such as grave robbery
in the name of learning and educating. They carried out dissections in secrecy. Human physical and
mental health practices have greatly benefitted because of the discoveries made by these scientists
acts, once considered immoral.
The history of physiological psychology spans throughout centuries. Its origins are traceable back to
times before Christ. Several instances set the framework, which facilitated the development and
growth of physiology as one of the numerous subdivisions of psychology. There are three important
periods and several people that established this field. Contributors include Avicenna (980 1037B.C.),
Rene Descartes during the renaissance and several key contributors during the eighteenth and
nineteenth centuries. The breakthroughs in these periods developed a new science and led the way to
the creation of other related subdivisions of psychology. Physiological psychology is one among
several subdivisions of biological psychology. This branch of psychology is concerned with the
response of normal and pathological processes of the central nervous system (CNS). Physiological
psychology mainly

Dworkin Gets Mack d Out
An Analysis of Ronald Dworkin and Catherine Mackinnon s
Perspectives on Modern (Obscene) Pornography
March 7, 2005
Introduction In the coming paragraphs, I will prove that Ronald Dworkin s criticisms and critiques of
Catherine Mackinnon s views towards pornography and society are largely unfounded and immaterial,
and that government intervention via legislation is required in the protection of women s interests. I
will begin by explaining Catherine Mackinnon s opinion and support for the Butler decision and
thereafter, I will discuss Ronald Dworkin s critique of it. After outlining their positions, I will proceed
to highlight the areas of incommensurability between their arguments. My perspective ... Show more

She comments that the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms provides not only formative but
substantial protection from inequalities. Unlike the U.S., Mackinnon comments that the Canadian
system seeks to alter the poor treatment of disadvantaged groups and amend their status.[6] The Court
utilized this approach in the case of R v. Butler where it recognized that the humiliation, degradation,
and subordination of women was harm to society as a whole as it led to an inequality.[7] In other
words, the court recognized the social and communal harm imposed by pornography, that is to say it
recognized the context under which the pornography occurred. Recognizing not only the harm from
pornography but more importantly the inequality that it perpetuates, the Canadian courts ruled in an
opposite manner to their U.S counterparts. At one point, Mackinnon wonders what warrants the
restriction of freedom of speech in the US. One judge once wrote, fear of serious injury cannot alone
justify the suppression of free speech . She points out that it is this exact fear a fear of serious injury
which justifies the government s prohibition on child pornography.[8] She continues that it is the
plight of the abused, which is frequently trivialized in the United States. Those who are assaulted are
told to accept the freedom of your abusers and that you are not really being hurt .[9] But one of the
most important differences

The, Dog And Cat And Coffee And Tea Great Gatsby And...
Introvert Dog and Cat. Coffee and Tea. Great Gatsby and Catcher in the Rye. Everyone knows there
are two types of people in the world. What are they? . This question is quite easy to answer and refers
to human behavioural quirks and nature, Introverts and Extroverts. Surrounding the two vague types
are many stereotypes, but this will be addressing and explaining what it truly means to be an Introvert.
Introverts are typically more complex characters as a whole compared to Extroverts, the dynamics
between the two already a major difference. When a person hears Introvert they think Alone , Hates
People , Pessimist and Boring , whilst thinking Extroverts, on the other hand, as Happy , Friendly ,
Optimists , and Fun two ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But when Introverts give themselves permission to seek the solitude they crave, life becomes lighter
and better. Social situations are more bearable. Even small talk is easier to endure when they ve
fortified themselves with solitude. Introverts are known for being quiet, another universal quirk.
Introverts are written economists suffering in a world of verbal hodgepodge. Unfortunately, this has
lead to awkward confrontations like Are you shy? or Why are you so quiet? . Now it s time to debunk
the typical Introvert myths. The most common one is that being Introverted means you re shy, and
often use the two words interchangeably. Both introverts and shy people tend to avoid socializing at
times, but they do so for different reasons. Introverts often stay on the sidelines at social events
because socializing drains their energy, whilst shy people tend to avoid going to unnecessary social
events at all because of their fear of the unknown. Instead of worrying about being drained, they re
concerned about making a mess of themselves or being rejected / judged. The next most common is
that Introverts are socially awkward. People assume that because you are Introverted, you don t know
how to behave or act socially. Many introverts have superior social skills. They are confident,
assertive, and interesting to talk to. People don t realize this because they assume everyone with good
social skills is an extrovert.

Persuasive Essay About Illegal Immigration
Illegal Immigration Illegal immigration in the U.S first began with the Chinese in the 1800 s. The big
reasons they migrated to the U.S was to work in the gold mines, build railroads, and work in
agricultural jobs. Americans didn t like the idea of the Chinese taking all the labor. For that reason the
Chinese were being discriminated and a law was passed. The law was known as the Chinese
Exclusion Act, it restricted the Chinese from immigrating to the United States for 10 years. It also
demanded for all Chinese flying into and out of the country to have a certificate that identified their
status. The Act wasn t repealed till 1943. Of course later on and even today many other ethnics that
migrated to the U.S will still face discrimination and encounter laws being put upon them. The causes
for illegal immigration include the hope for a better life, a safer environment, and the effort needed for
the process of naturalization. While an outcome is discrimination. One cause of illegal immigration is
the hope for a better life. The biggest reasons many illegal immigrants come to the U.S is because it
offers education, better jobs, and better health care. In the U.S the education is free where as in other
countries you may need to pay for school and supplies and a bunch of other stuff that are need for
school. Usually some schools will give out free supplies, that is until they run out. There are also
always some organizations and programs that offer to donate free school

Theme Of Vertigo By Paul Austers Mr Vertigo
To fight through downfall I was twelve years old the first time I walked on water is the first line in
Paul Austers Mr. Vertigo, a book about a child s dream and the journey to reach them. The book takes
place in America at 1927 where a young boy named Walt is approached by a strange man, called
Master Yehudi and is offered a chance in a lifetime, the ability to fly. As he goes with him he chooses
a difficult path that will bring both wonders and despair. This is a book telling about a boys big
ambition to overcome all hardship that lives throws in his way. The ability to overcome hardship can
be seen through the protagonist personality, his ambition to reach greatness. He was a nobody, a
nothing, so when he is offered the chance to achieve something greater he takes it. Not like a bird, my
little man. Like a god. You d be the wonder of wonders, Walt, the holy of holies. As long as men
walked the earth, they d worship you as the greatest among them. (Auster 74). He has an ambition so
extraordinary and he is willing to do anything to reach his goal, suffer through hardship so repulsing
that no human ever should need to go through. He got buried alive, cuts of a part of his finger and so
many inhuman things, but he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Pros And Consequences Of The Free Market Capitalist System
The free market capitalist system as a whole is detrimental to the human population and the
environment because it violates the natural laws that govern them both. American economist Richard
Wolff argues that capitalism throughout history has led to the excessive manufacturing of products and
economic crises, which have negative social and ecological effects (Wolff, 217). As dependents on the
resources of the earth, we have become aware that these resources are finite and should be preserved.
Free market capitalism violates this law because it allows corporations to deplete resources in order to
maximize their financial gain. In addition, the competitive structure of the capitalist system empowers
the few corporation owners and shareholders to achieve excessive wealth while their employees
struggle to gain financial stability. This only results in the disproportionate distribution of the benefits
and burdens of society that contradicts the principle of individual freedom because it places financial
restrictions on the majority of the population.
The capitalist emphasis on unrestricted, competitive market transactions enables the exploitation of
employees, the depletion of natural resources, and severe economic inequality. Rather than endorsing
a governmental system that promotes the unregulated pursuit of financial gain, we should endorse one
that recognizes our interdependent nature and facilitates unity and equality. In a socialist democracy,
wealth and economic power

The Argument Of Violent Video Games
Learning is a deep human need, like mating and eating, and like all such needs it is meant to be deeply
pleasurable to human beings. ― James Paul Gee, Why Video Games Are Good for Your Soul:
Pleasure and Learning. Some people have controversial argument that violent video games should be
banned, claiming about the content of video games can change the behavior and attitudes of the
players. Since the early 2000s, advocates of video games have emphasized their use as an expressive
medium, arguing for their protection under the laws governing freedom of speech and also as an
educational tool. Violent video games allow players to divert their aggression into the virtual world
instead of the real one. Video games have become not only a form of entertainment, but also another
way for people to escape reality and to enter their own virtual fantasy. James Gee explains that, if you
blame violent video games for horrific events that have occurred is much like putting the blame on
food for the cause of obesity. According to the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), 58 percent
of all Americans play video games, and nearly half of Americans over 50 play. The organization also
found that 45 percent of gamers are women and that the average gamer is 30 years old. Gameplay is
also on the rise one study shows that average daily video game play among kids ages 8 to 18 rose
from 26 minutes per day in 1999 to almost 110 minutes (nearly two hours) per day by 2009. The
numbers are even higher for boys, 25 percent of whom play video games for four or more hours per
day. Violent video games should not be ban because violent video games can be good for developing
cognitive, physical, and many more hidden skills, help to understand and learn to control emotions,
and banning violent video games is against the fourteenth amendment of the United States.
Violent video games strengthen and coordinate to visual skills. Researchers from the University of
Rochester found, people who frequently play video games have better visual skills of their
surroundings. Than people who do not or rarely play any video game. This means people who play
videogames, are better suit around his or her surrounding and could help improve our society. Many

A New Type Of Warfare Total War
Arguably the bloodiest war in American history, the Civil War introduced a new type of warfare total
war. In total war, all resources are poured into military power, and any beneficial facilities are used by
the military, including transportation and communication. This new type of warfare would prove to be
very effective and unforgiving in the battles to come. With the invention of new types of troop and
supply transports, as well as the invention of the telegraph, the war faced a new era of modern combat.
Prior to the Civil War, the antebellum period of America brought forth a miniature technological
revolution. Starting with canals, private American companies began investing in building new ways to
connect the country. After the construction of the Erie Canal, America experienced a boom of canal
building that lasted into the 1840s when railroads surpassed them in efficiency. Railroads proved to be
faster, more direct, and more reliable than their canal or turnpike cousins. The rail system grew so
quickly that in the 1830s there was more milage of railroad tracks than there were canals. Soon, the
eastern coast was connected to the western side of the Mississippi River, Chicago, and the Great
Lakes. Since most of the railroad milage was located in the North, this would provide the Union with
a strategical advantage when the battles began. Realizing their potential, Abraham Lincoln ordered the
Union to utilize the railroads to their full extent, moving valuable

In the event that the Child Protective Specialist should find credible evidence of maltreatment of

Racial Diversity And The School System
The discussion of integration in schools have multiple forces that continue to be examined today by
race and class. Stratification in today s school systems are segregation in residential neighborhoods.
Most attendance in public schools are determined largely by where students live. Predominantly white
suburbs and poor minority neighborhoods both are grouped by income and race. This particular
grouping can create school districts to be separated by race. Segregation in urban areas of North
Carolina schools could be a concern, and the recent expansion of charter schools has brought up new
fears with regard to the district s desegregation efforts. Does school choice impact racial diversity and
the achievement gap in North Carolina schools? Residential segregation has been a large focal point in
education policies since Brown v. Board of Education overturned the separate but equal act for blacks
and whites in 1954. This helped create some of the first federal policies in creating integrated schools
in America. The ruling in the Supreme Court Case Parents Involved in Community Schools v. Seattle
School District No.1 of 2007, also limited the way that districts could use race to determine school
assignment. Both rulings introduced the notion of parental choice of schools having the possibility to
positively impact school integration. Choice programs of the 1950 s and 1960 s led to racial
integration issues. During the 1970s through the 1990 s brought many new choice programs to

Power Of Culture On Public Displays Of Affection
Power of Culture on Public Displays of Affection: An Observation How do you display affection?
Some people detest PDA public displays of affection with a furious passion whereas others embrace
their fondness and feelings to their partner in public. What causes this disparity in sentiments towards
displays of romance? Are characterizations of affection defined by bodies of location, culture, and
time? To begin developing theories regarding those topics, a pair of observations was conducted in a
local park investigating couples and their presentations of romance. By analyzing the parkgoers
reaction to public displays of affection in Deep Cove, a deeper understanding of how culture
influences affection and romance can be hypothesized. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first observation occurred during an unusually warm autumn afternoon. Clear, blue skies
illuminated the park as red, orange, yellow, and brown leaves distinctively marked the ground. Vibrant
activity and noise permeated throughout the park: hikers, kayakers, paddle boarders, and dog walkers,
the park was bustling with people. Moreover, many couples were present. Data collection, therefore,
went incredibly smoothly during that day. In fact, many observations were missed due to the
overwhelming amount of activity happening. Within a week s time, the weather quickly changed. The
amount of data collected during the second observation, therefore, significantly decreased compared
to that of the first outing. Temperatures dropped 20°C and the clear blue sky was replaced with a dull
grey fog. Along with the early wave of winter weather, flurries of snow gently immersed the sky
before melting on contact with the ground. Unsurprisingly, the park was empty and almost no data
regarding affection and romance was collected. As a result, most of my analysis and reflection will
describe events observed during the first observation.
Before analyzing the circumstances at play during the observations, it is necessary to describe how I
characterized the sexuality and sexual identity of the observed couples. The sexuality of those
engaging in public displays of affection was based off traits that constitute the sexual identity of the
lovers. To

Social norms are what the world or society view as acceptable ways to act. A social norm that I tend to

The Effects Of Ambient Air Quality For Environmental...
Problem 1: Ans: In the article, the author described mainly two challenges to the process. One
challenge will be to routinely share data for these types of analyses at fine geographic and temporal
scales without disclosing confidential information. Another challenge will be to develop C R estimates
which take into account time, space, or other relevant effect modifiers. (Talbot etc. 2009) Though
developing C R estimates using proper modeling methods are very important and will directly provide
initiatively studying results, in my opinion, challenges regarding data collection and routinely share
are the most important. To measure the public health impacts of ambient air quality for environmental
public health tracking, both consistent accurate data and measure approaches are required. Though
EPA has developed statistical based ambient air estimates (using HB model) for use in EPHT, the
correct modeling and representative results are all based on accuracy data collection. From my
personal experience as a biostatistician, if the collected data are not representative or inaccuracy,
however well the measuring methods are, researchers will never get the real truth. Thus challenges
regarding data collection and routinely share are the most important. They are the foundation of the
whole study. Overcoming these challenges are more than necessary. More in detail, as described in the
article the data collection and routinely share challenges are important and mainly from two

Analysis Of The American Revolutionary War ( 1775-1783 )
Cristian Sandoval Prof. Jodie S. Brown English 205 22 July 2015 Rogerian Argument Who s Right?
The American Revolutionary War (1775 1783) was the armed conflict between Great Britain and the
Colonist. Those residing in the colonies in America were the Colonists. Both parties were known as
one entity, however, with time and the lack in similar interests, a schism was created and they became
Great Britain and the Americans. As the Colonist grew and tried to expand, King George, the ruler of
Great Britain at the time, wanted to take control over western expansion. King George s control
propagated to the colonists and were tied to Britain by trade which left them dependent. Due to the
lack of currency flowing in the colonies, the colonists used barter and credit to acquire the things
necessary to survive ( Why were they Colonies unhappy with the British? ). The King requested that
the expansion of the colonist be restricted to the Appalachian Mountains and were ordered east
instead. On top of having to move, the colonists were ordered by the King to provide housing for the
British Colonies that would be stationed there. The Colonist felt that this was unnecessary because of
the French and Indian War being over. From this, the Colonist are put in a position where they feel the
need to separate from the king. The colonist wanted to be free from the tyranny. During this time of

How Did James Madison Influence The Constitution

A few delegates then sorted a plan with three branches for a stronger government. These three
branches were the Legislative, Executive, and the Judicial branches. Along with a system called

Supply And Demand Of A Good Or Service
Supply and demand is a fundamental factor in shaping the character of the marketplace. A demand
refers to the specific quantity of a product /good or service that people are willing and able to buy at
given price level, where supply of a good or service represents how much quantity people are willing
and able to offer for sale at given price level. There are various factors that demand and supply of a
good or service depend on. Demand of a product depends on the price of the product, number of
buyers in the market, tastes and preferences of consumer, consumer s income, consumer expectations
and prices of related commodities. Supply of a product depends on the price of that product, number
of sellers in the market, technology, input ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Demand is determined by many factors other than price. The shift in demand curve occurs when there
is a change in factors other than price, results in the shift of demand curve. For example, if level of
income of an individual or a community rises, then demand will increase at the same price level
leading demand curve to shift to the right. Similarly, if there is a fall in the disposable income of the
consumers or rise in the prices of close substitute of a good or decline in consumer taste or goods are
unavailable, etc., at the same price level, there is a fall or decrease in demand leading demand curve to
shift to the left as shown in Figure 2
http://economicsconcepts.com/movement_vs_shift_of_demand_curve.htm In case of supply, if other
factor changes except its own price, the supply curve will shift towards left or right at same price
level. For example, For example, if production cost of a product increases, then the supply will
decrease and the supply curve will shift towards right and if the production cost decreases, then supply
will increase and the supply curve will shift towards left, as shown in figure: 3 With the help of above
analysis of demand and supply, the analysis of demand and supply of certain resources in Australia
can be done. Australia is famous for many resources such as mineral resource, agricultural resource,
human resources and many more. Even though demand supply analysis of Australian resources

Computers and the Many Benefits
Computers and the Many Benefits Computers play a huge part in many all of our lives in one way or
another. They have many purposes and are used in various types of environments, such as medical
facilities, government offices, and many households. They also are the reason we are able to surf the
internet, watch animated television shows and see movies with special graphics. Computers have
impacted our lives in many ways. You may not notice it but they did make life a lot easier. Without
computers, the world would be a harder place to live in. Thanks to computers, everyday life is easier
for us. Some people may disagree but most wouldn t. Computers have made the impossible possible.

Crimes are now being solved with the help of computers and at a higher rate.
Movies with special effects are made with computers. Most of the movies today use computers to
make things look realistic but they are not. For instance the movie CARS an animated movie would
not be here today if computers where not around. Imagine not be able to see television shows that
entertain us simply because of the graphics used. The graphics used entice us into show because it
make the show a lot realer then they are. Almost all movies have special effects and those special
effects are made by computers.
Computers are here to stay and things will only get better, because they are here to make everyday
task simpler. Since computers we have been able to cure diseases, find people and help stay connected
to family and friends aboard. As Kinsley s said, Home computers [ ] the internet have expanded
human freedom (559). We are able to do so much more with our daily task and with our personal lives
because of computers.

The Issue of Identity Formation Depicted in Ralph...
All of us go though a period of discovery of our identities. The novel Invisible Man, by Ralph Ellison,
addresses the issue of identity formation by following the efforts of an invisible man in search of his
identity. He considers himself to be invisible because people refuse to see him for his individuality and
intelligence..The narrator in the novel Invisible Man is invisible to others and to himself because of
effects of racism and the expectations of others. This is supported in significant parts of the novel such
as the battle royal, his time in the Brotherhood, and the Harlem riot. The narrator s invisibility first
comes up in chapter one, where he is invited to a community meeting consisting of prestigious white
citizens. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ellison also supports his claim when he refers to their dirty ears, the dirt symbolizing the racist trash
that has built up in the minds of the white men, affecting their choice not to give the narrator their full
attention and respect he deserves as a human being. The narrator shows in the basement that he is truly
blind to the white oppression that controls his life. He lets himself be ridiculed by turning into a
puppet for the white crowd for entertainment purposes. Still, he holds onto the assumption that if he
degrades himself, he will be rewarded in the end. As a result, the narrator does not advance in his
journey to find his identity, but rather degrades himself even more and makes himself dependent on
other s opinions. Furthermore, the narrator appears invisible to others and to himself during his time as
a member of the Brotherhood, an organization that appears in the novel as a euphemism to the
Communist Party in real life. The narrator joins the Brotherhood in the hopes of creating an identity
for himself within the organization by acquiring recognition as a prestigious black leader. He is under
the assumption that the Brotherhood recognizes his ideas, his individuality, his intelligence, and soon
becomes dedicated and loyal to their cause. However, the narrator does not discover the Brotherhood s
true intentions until after Brother Clifton s funeral. The Brotherhood turns against the narrator for his
belligerent speech at the funeral that

Joy Luck Club
Feminism is a topic that comes up strongly throughout the movie of The Joy Luck Club. Feminism is
extremely important in this film and shows its face quite frequently whether it be between family or
relationships. The life of the women characters is the most vital part of the story, meaning, the
feminism aspect needs more acknowledgement. Luckily, the author of the series does an outstanding
job at illustrating that. The Joy Luck Club depicts the types of hardships women must go through
throughout the movie and the novel. They battle against discrimination and sexism, all while trying to
keep the burden of their lives on their shoulders. The Joy Luck Club is truly an extravagant series that
deserves more validation. Not only that, but it educates ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Setting is the least important puzzle piece of feminism, but it does educate the viewers more about
what it was like during The Joy Luck Club. As stated beforehand, The Joy Luck Club took place in the
1980s. Most people assume sexism and discrimination has long died down into the dirt, but it still
violently sprouted through the ground with determination instead of withering away. Chinese people
were way more strict and cruel when it came to discipline children or being in a marriage. Children,
shoved around ruthlessly by mothers, and wives; still experiencing mistreatment by their sorry
excuses of a husband. Under those circumstances, Amy Tan portrays an accurate representation of
what it was back in the 1900s for women of Chinese descent. Back when the main characters were
teenagers, they did not have any rights to themselves. An incident that explains this more in detail was
Lindo s first husband. Lindo, forced at a young age to move away from her beloved mother Practically
insulted, she was required to marry a snobby, ill mannered little boy named Huang Tyan yu. From the
beginning Lindo thought as if she didn t even belong in her family anymore, hence this example,
Because I was promised to the Huangs son for marriage, my own family began treating me as if I
belonged to somebody else. My mother would say to me when the rice bowl went up to my face too

Fastball Narrative
It was the top of the seventh, and the Freeburg Rebels had a 1 run lead. After one of my teammates
made the last out, I headed to the mound for the bottom of the last inning. While warming up, I could
feel the scorching heat piercing my skin. As the first batter walked up to the plate, the umpire yelled
out Play Ball ! Despite this being one of the most important moments in my baseball career, I wasn t
nervous. I was locked in. On the first pitch, the catcher held up a 1, signaling for a fastball. I started
my windup and continued to throw the pitch. The batter swung out of his shoes like he was trying to

Not Just Horsing Around
Imagine yourself as a child with restricted movements and impairments not felt by others your age.
Imagine for a longing to be free, free from the restricting walls of the hospital and therapy room.
Freedom was a goal that Anne and Tom had for their son William. They wanted freedom of the
traditional therapy setting because watching their child make little to no progress therapy session after
therapy session left Anne and Tom discouraged. They wanted nothing more for their son than to thrive
and develop the new skills that they knew he could. William has hypotonia, or low muscle tone and
some overall developmental delays said Anne. His parents set several goals, but their first goal was to
get William to learn to walk. Watching his therapy sessions in the traditional setting were painful as
parents. They were feeling hopeless with the lack of progress with the physical therapy sessions
William was attending. The Physical therapist herself felt that there was not much more that she could
do there in the hospital for William. That s when she recommended hippotherapy. Hippotherapy is
what would eventually get William to his goal of walking in 3 short months, and though not a therapy
goal, one of William s first words was Dolly, the name of a favorite volunteer. Hippotherapy for
William. What is hippotherapy? Hippotherapy

Legal Journals On American Law
Privacy, meaning the right to be left alone, has intellectual roots tracing back to the 19th century. On
December 15, 1890, Samuel D. Warren and Louis D. Brandeis had their article The Right to Privacy
published in the Harvard Law Review. This article was highly regarded as one of the exceptional
examples of the effect legal journals have on American law, and was the first of many future law
review discussions. It is our purpose to consider whether the existing law affords a principle which
can properly be invoked to protect the privacy of the individual; and if it does what the nature and
extent of such protection is (Gregory, Kalven, and Epstein 1133). Warren and Brandeis stressed the
importance and necessity for some form of protection for the private individual when the press is
overstepping their boundaries and the indecency their gossip creates. Several decades later, in August
of 1960, William L. Prosser published his article Privacy in the California Law Review. In this article
he outlined the four classifications of privacy law which are as follows:
1. Intrusion upon the plaintiff s seclusion or solitude, or into his private affairs.
2. Public disclosure of embarrassing private facts about the plaintiff.
3. Publicity which places the plaintiff in a false light in the public eye.
4. Appropriation, for the defendant s advantage, of the plaintiff s name or likeness.
The second classification refers to publication of private matters, which will be the

Connie´s Coming of Age

English 1102
6 November 2013
Connie s Coming of Age In her famous short story, Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been,
Joyce Carol Oates shows the transition from childhood to adulthood through her character Connie.
Each person experiences this transition in their own way and time. For some it is leaving home for the
first time to go to college, for others it might be having to step up to a leadership position. No matter
what, this transition affects everyone; it just happens to everyone differently. Oates describes Connie s
unfortunate coming of age in a much more violent and unexpected way than the typical coming of age
story for a fifteen year old girl. Connie has the need to be viewed as older and as ... Show more

As we learn in the story, being mired in the eternal present carries with it dangerous and devastating
consequences (Theriot 59). Because Connie is only aware of the present, she does not see Arnold
Friend as the tempter and trickster he is. Many believe that Friend represents either the Devil or a
satyr. According to Wegs, Arnold is far more than a grotesque portrait of a psychopathic killer
masquerading as a teenager; he also has all the traditional sinister traits of that arch deceiver and
source of grotesque terror, the devil (Wegs 68). An example of these deceitful traits would be him
lying and tricking Connie with his young faced persona and using this distraction to force her to face
the horrible choice of sacrificing herself or her family. Another opinion of Friend is that the Devil is
usually presented as interested in possessing human souls... [and]... Friend, on the other hand, clearly
desires a physical relationship with Connie. His motives echo those of satyrs, notorious for their
lechery (Easterly 539). On the other hand, according to Easterly, the Devil is usually presented as
interested in possessing human souls... [and]... Friend, on the other hand, clearly desires a physical
relationship with Connie. His motives echo those of satyrs, notorious for their lechery (Easterly 539).
Whether Oates meant for Friend to represent the Devil or a satyr is not the main function of his
character. His main purpose in this story is presenting Connie with the

Essay on Stem-Cell Research and the Media
Stem Cell Research and the Media
Biomedical technology is getting much press due to the stem cell debate. A controversial topic in
itself, with the President of the United States taking a stand on the issue for funding purposes, the
topic has received even more press over the consequences resulting from President Bush s decision.
With the President s approval rating well over 80 percent since the September 11th attack, those who
contest any of his decisions have been receiving feelings of anger from those who support him. I,
however, would like to take a stand and contest Bush s decision to limit the stem cell research funding.
This paper presents two articles that examine Bush s decision in different ways; one looks at ... Show

Readers of this article probably differ in their familiarity with Bush s decision; some already know
about President Bush s decision to limit the funding of the research, and thus Begley found no reason
to bring up the President s decision because many people have very strong opinions about the
decision. Other readers, however, may not have previously known the actual funding limits created by
Bush. Begley does not try to convey Bush s decision in this article, only to discuss the future research
effects of this decision and announcement.
In a way, Begley is trying to sell to the audience on the idea that 64 lines is not enough, thus taking a
stand against Bush s decision to limit the federal funding of stem cell research to the number of
colonies currently in existence. While Begley s words do not imply any direct disagreement with Bush
s limit, she would have taken a different approach and used different quotations if the purpose of this
article were to commend the president s decision that 64 lines are enough. In such a case, Begley
would not have ended her article with 64 might not be 64 after all, but rather a quotation that suggests
the potential power of the 64 lines.
Begley s article attempts to immerse the reader in the stem cell debate. A strong part of this

Although Billy was openly gay in the 1940 s he was still known as one of the best at what he did.
Billy Strayhorn s right arm was Duke Ellington. Edward Kennedy Duke Ellington was the most
prolific composer of the twentieth century in terms of both number of compositions and variety of
forms. His development was one of the most spectacular in the history of music, underscored by more
than fifty years of sustained achievement as an artist and an entertainer. He is considered by many to
be America s greatest composer, bandleader, and recording artist. The extent of Ellington s
innovations helped to redefine the various forms in which he worked. He created many of the
elements of American music the minstrel song, ragtime, Tin Pan Alley tunes, the blues, and American
appropriations of the European music tradition into a consistent style with which, though technically
complex, has directness and simplicity of expression largely absent from the purported art music of
the twentieth century. Ellington s first great achievements came in the three minute song form, and he
later wrote music for all kinds of settings: the ballroom,

  • 2. It Was A Nice, Spring Day It was a nice, spring day in Colorado. Anicia, my wonderful, sarcastic best friend, and I had just gotten out of school. To the left was the mountains, looking beautiful with just a bit of snow on top of them and the sun shining from behind. Behind me was the school with hundreds of kids rushing to make it on the buses in time. Anicia and I were on the way to talk to some of our friends Thomas, Tristan, and Lexi about some random science project we had to do has a group, which never did get turned in by the way. Thomas kept suggesting, Let s just go to Alyssa s house and make a video about what to and what not to do during a lab. But everyone didn t like that idea and kept disagreeing. I was bored out of my mind. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But for some strange reason, I felt the need to jump on it. I looked around to see if Anicia was still talking to our friends, she was. But I didn t even realize that there were maintenance people just working on it and that the lid was pretty crooked. So I jump on it. Within seconds the lid moves and I fall straight through! Since there were maintenance people who just had worked on it and didn t put the lid back on correctly, I fell in this hole that happens to be a sewer. Well uh oh, I said to myself. I was just sitting in the sewer looking up at all the people while Anicia was completely oblivious to the fact that I wasn t with her and that instead, I was in a sewer. But after all, she is my best friend, so she has gotten pretty good at ignoring me when need be. I ended up watching a short girl with long tangled black hair, glasses, a hoodie, and headphones walk all the way to my house. I tried to yell HEY ANICIA! but as she was wearing headphones she didn t hear me and assumed I was all the way home already. Well Anicia, made it all the way to my house. She walked in since it was pretty much her house too. She walks in and yells Hi Mom! to my mom downstairs. My mom assumed that I was with her too, so she yelled back Hey girls! Anicia didn t think anything of it and went into our upstairs kitchen and made herself some food and went to the upstairs living room and turned on Netflix. She tried to get on Netflix when she ... • 3. People, Power, Politics of Dred Scott vs. Sanford People, Power, Politics of Dred Scott v. Sanford The American court system has effectively used technicalities in cases they want a winning decision in since the conception of the United States of America. No other example concerning slavery is better illustrates this than Dred Scott v. Sanford. This case has become infamous not only because the decision, but because it was a major stepping stone made in the progress of getting equal rights for negroes. Loopholes in the constitution ultimately kept Scott a slave, but he made monumental progress in 1857 when he went to the Supreme Court and attempted to sue for his own freedom. The Dred Scott V. Sanford case talks about what came of his case and what he was suing for and the loophole used by the Federal court system. During a time of uncertainty for the nation, at the helm of this uncertainty was the negro man during the abolitionist movements and the exact rights they haven t been given until post the civil war. Slavery had been the central issue of the civil war. During the abolitionist movement, slavery was a revisited issue and now not only Negros opposed it, but many Northern white men as well. The abolitionist movement had begun to transform northern public opinion: many citizens now firmly opposed slaveries extensions to any of the territories North, or South. as stated by Corey Robin (107), who introduces the Dred Scott v. Sanford case. Though the negroes gained more support through northern ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Female Circumcision In Africa Normally, female circumcision (also known as female genital mutilation) is not the topic of discussion most people would talk about, but for once it should be. Female circumcision is the cutting or removal of parts or maybe even all of the female genital region. This can take place during a wide range starting from when a baby girl is first brought into this world all the way until puberty. The genital mutilation can be performed by an elderly woman in the village or if the family is wealthy, the surgery can be done by a professional doctor. After the painful surgery, a ritual is held to honor the young girl for her rite of passage . According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are four main types: clitoridectomy, excision, infibulation, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, in order for a young woman to inherit land and get married, she had to be circumcised (Female Genital Mutilation 17). It is believed that being circumcised is a way to ensure that the girl is pure and stays pure until she is wed off. Africa is mostly male dominant so it is often times, the man s right to go have his daughter circumcised so when she does become a wife, she can satisfy the man. This is usually resulted due to the mother s social status as where she cannot speak out against it. It is very seldom, as well, that a girl will volunteer to have this done to her due to peer pressure. If one was not circumcised, then she could not be wed and would be looked down upon by the people in her village. Furthermore, the surgery may be forced upon because a family member who is concern about the disgrace that could be brought upon the family s reputation, may secretly have the girl circumcised without the mother even knowing. Possibly originating in Africa, which there is no known evidence, a female undergoes circumcision. Female circumcision is a process of which various alterations to her genital area. is occurred during anytime in a girl s life once she is born until she reaches puberty. • 5. An Essay On The Parthenon The Parthenon, a temple of the Doric order, is one of the greatest artistic accomplishments of the fifth century. The Parthenon is viewed without mythological reference and stands far outside the normal Greek temple decoration, which is commonly known to derive its subject matter from the mythical past. (Connelly 53) The Parthenon is different from most other Grecian art of the fifth century and is truly beautiful. One of the greatest reasons the Parthenon is set apart as a great feat in Grecian art is due to its different stylization and the fact that the entire temple is built from the finest white marble throughout the entire piece, including the roof. The second marble type used on the temple is known by the name Hynettin, it is bluish in color and was carved on location in Situ and the third marble type is known as Pernian, these two marble types were used sparingly in comparison to the Pentelikon but nevertheless were still as important. • 6. The Effects Of Binge Drinking On College One of my youth pastors told the teens at church on a Wednesday night, Don t start a habit in your younger years that is going to control the way you live your adult years . Whenever I heard this statement, I thought of teens binge drinking in college. College drinking has become a major issue for people under the age of twenty one. Binge drinking becomes addicting, especially for people under the age of twenty one. Understanding the problem and consequences of binge drinking will help to show that lowering the drinking age will not help the problem. Binge drinking in college is when students consume an excessive amount of alcohol in a short period of time. This can happen because of parties, meeting new friends, even being in a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Along with binge drinking comes consequences. The most common cause for deaths in car accidents is drinking and driving. In Roan s book, Roan states, In 1984, a federal standard was established setting the minimum legal drinking age at 21. Since then, traffic fatalities among drivers ages 18 to 20 have fallen by an estimated 13%, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (Roan ). This statistic is one that shows how lowering the legal drinking age would not solve the problem of binge drinking in college. Most people that are freshman in college start school at 18 or 19. As stated in the previous paragraph, these freshman attend parties or events with older people. These students can be 21 or older and be able to buy alcohol. This can lead to underage drinking. If a student does not live on campus, he or she will have to drive back to their house. They can be giving friends a ride to wherever they need to go, or just driving around goofing off. If they have had an excessive amount of alcohol, they can be endangering the lives of themselves, their friends lives, and other people on the road. If they were to have a car accident, they could kill the other people in the cars involved. They can then be charged with murder. Another consequence of binge drinking is alcohol related death. As a psychiatrist, Horney Karen developed a pattern of needs that were derived from neurosis. The needs were based on the things Karen thought people required to be what they required in life. According to Karen, people should have to have two views of themselves, one the real self and the ideal self, whereby the real self is who one is and what they are. Whereby the real self has one s potential for growth, the potential for happiness and power. The ideal self is, on the other hand, is used to help the real self to develop one s potential and achievement of self. • 12. Mexican Olympics Protest Of 1968 And The Protests In formality to human existence, protesting has been a right for all humans to speak to their mind. Some may say that the idea of revolting against injustices is embedded in our DNA; perhaps this may be true, but regardless, protesting has been a sign for craving transformation. Dating back from American Revolution to Black Lives matter, protest has been the only guaranteed freedom that gives us a voice to alter our future. In retrospect, movements or protest such as Civil Rights Movement quite literally changed the landscape of America for generations; speaking out towards the spiteful racism that was so prevalent during those times leading to an importance in diversity. Similarly, Countries around the world have conducted protest that has revolutionized the way of life or inspired future generations. A clear distinction of this honor would be with Mexican Olympics protest of 1968, the infamous protest that captured the world s attention. Public found themselves in a unique position in viewing the Mexican youth stand up against the corruption of the Mexican Government. • 13. The Fifth Symphony By Ludwig Van Beethoven I have chosen to share three of my favorite pieces. Each piece is different by genre, artist, style, and time. These three pieces should be familiar to most of the populations ears. I tried to choose different types of pieces because I do not like to listen to the same artists or genre. My personal musical taste is a variety of genres and choosing the three pieces represents my musical mixture. The Fifth Symphony composed by Ludwig Van Beethoven is one of my favorite classical pieces. Beethoven was a famous deaf composer and the most leading influential musical figure in the Romantic era. The Fifth Symphony was written between 1804 and 1808. Beethoven held a concert to debut his pieces, but it did not go as well as planned. The audience was bored and tired from sitting in the auditorium too long that their interest level decreased. It was not until a critic by the name of E.T.A Hoffmann wrote a review analyzing the symphony, in order to show his readers the particular affects Beethoven used to create his music. The symphony soon began its popular status as being the central item in that time period. The overall expression of this piece is about the struggle against inner soul searching and winning the battle. Some listeners might perceive the following events: an encounter with a force or struggle, a period of quiet soul searching, followed by a further wrestling with the blocking barrier, and a victory over the combat while listening to this piece. • 14. Wilfred Owen s Poems On The Futility Of War Poems using strong poetic technique and devices are able to create a wide range of emotions from the readers. Wilfred Owen s poetry effectively uses these poetic techniques and devices to not only create unsettling images about war but to provide his opinion about war itself with the use of themes within his poem. The use of these themes explored Owen s ideas on the futility of war and can be seen in the poems: Anthem for Doomed Youth, Futility and The Next War. The poems provide unsettling images and belief of war through the treatment of death, barbaric nature of war and the futility of war. In majority of Owen s poem, he demonstrates the true image of war and the impact it has on the soldiers rather than masking it with the lies of pride ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The idea of the futility of war can be seen in the poem Strange Meeting, where the persona creates a scenario of two opposing soldiers having a conversation in Hell. The line, The pity of war, the pity war distilled uses repetition with the word pity to imply the pity that is felt for the soldiers that have died at war. The use of the word distilled is indicating how war is attracting the concentration of many people and that the soldiers are dying for pointless reasons, intensifying the pity felt on the soldiers. Futility of war is again demonstrated in Owen s poem, Futility, in the final stanza with the rhetorical question, Was it for this the clay grew tall? Owen use of imagery of clay grew tall is making a biblical reference to humans being made by clay and questioning was the creation of humankind futile due to the recurring inevitability of war and suffering. In the previous lines, Owen compares the sun with God and is desperate to bring his comrades back to life, Woke, once, the clays of a cold star The use of the oxymoron is Owen indicating that the sun is now weaker than it was previously. Owen is explaining how futile the sun was to provide life on Earth if it is unable to bring back the dead. Hot tubs have been attributed health benefits ranging from relief of muscle and joint pain, to help in treatment of HIV and other viral infections. Because of this, many people own hot tubs and many more go to health spas where they can use them. On the other hand, hot tubs are not that easy to maintain. A consistent disinfectant level must be maintained in order to inhibit the growth of bacteria which could cause infections to the people who use them. The disinfectant of choice for most hot tubs is chlorine, mainly because of its effectiveness, persistence in the water, and the familiarity with its properties. Since the 70 s, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The problem with chlorine is that it reacts with organic matter in water to form chloroform, a known carcinogen. The efficiency of chlorines disinfection capabilities depends on the free chlorine in the water. Free chlorine refers to the amount of chlorine in the water after the demand for chlorine in the water has been satisfied. In other words, the free chlorine is the one that s available to disinfect or kill microorganisms. Since the free chlorine in hot tub water is recommended to be around 3 5 ppm, this means that there will be a higher concentration of chloroform in the tub water than in for example tap water that has free chlorine level of only 1 2ppm when leaving the treatment plant. In addition the high temperature of the water combined with the aeration by the jet bubbles will enhance the 2 volatilization of the chloroform into the air and this increases the exposure due to inhalation. The high temperature of water will also increase dermal absorption of chloroform. Of special interest, are wooden hot tubs. In this case, there is a constant source of organic matter(wood) for the chlorine to react with, and therefore increased concentrations of chloroform. This study will try to prove the hypothesis that using hot tubs, results in elevated exposures to chloroform due to various factors that enhance ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Examples Of Selfishness In An Enemy Of The People In Henrik Ibsen s An Enemy of the People, he showcases and explores theme of naivety and selfishness lead to the wrong decisions throughout his play with the use of both detail and diction. With these in mind, he demonstrates the significant value and importance of properly understanding the truth and relevance in this play. The play begins in an unnamed town, in southern Norway. In the play, Ibsen often portrays the main character, Dr. Thomas Stockmann, as an individual who is not only naive and childish, but out of touch with his own reality. This allows the reader to perceive these characteristics through his giddy actions and tone of voice. In Act I, Scene I, Dr. Stockmann returns with company and says, Look here here is another guest for you, Katherine. Isn t that jolly! (5). The readers very first impression of a man who is presumed to be professional and will end up taking care of the town, is of a grown man who has just returned home and is more excited to showcase the large amount of meat he has with due respect as they finally have the money to share their meat. Later, he continues to showcase his newfound wealth by saying, ...and we have got a lamp shade too. Do you see? All out of Katherine s savings! (7). Many people have differing opinions on what makes a person a good writer, or the standard in which one can write. One of the main things to remember about writing is to always keep your audience in mind, and adjust you writing style and language accordingly. Also remember that writing is process which takes time to perfect. English has never been one of my favorite subjects, mainly just because I never really consider myself to be a good writer and by the normal standard I may not be. There some people that are incredibly street smart but do not fair so well in school but in Gerald Graff s Hidden Intellectualism Graff argues that street smarts are just as important as book smarts. Graff says that It is a matter of finding points of convergence and translation, moments when student discourse can be translated into academic discourse and vice versa, producing a kind of bilingualism on both sides of the student teacher divide (Graff, Hidden Intellectualism). In other words, for a student with street smarts to learn to read academically, students need to read things that interest them, encouraging them to dive into their reading, forming an opinion and arguing their point. When you think about it this does makes sense, you can t get that student to read more intellectual readings without first starting with something that interest them and then let them naturally move toward more intellectual reading. I myself was this way in high school, I was always uninterested in the required readings. Many times, failed to even read them and when I did it was just to get a grade. I never really formed my own opinion of the reading, except for the fact that I just didn t like it. However, when we could pick our own reading material, something that interested me, I was more drawn in and able to form my own opinion, caring about what I was reading. By doing so this allows students with street smarts, to not only become drawn toward the more intellectual reading, it will get to a point where they want to argue their points and form their own opinions. The question though is being street smart better than book smart, and in my opinion, this can be situational, depending on what you are doing would determine which one is better but when coupled they work well together. In the early centuries, examination and dissection of the human body was a taboo practice and consequently became mired due to ethical or religious concerns. Scientist had no choice but to undertake inconceivable acts, such as grave robbery in the name of learning and educating. They carried out dissections in secrecy. Human physical and mental health practices have greatly benefitted because of the discoveries made by these scientists acts, once considered immoral. The history of physiological psychology spans throughout centuries. Its origins are traceable back to times before Christ. Several instances set the framework, which facilitated the development and growth of physiology as one of the numerous subdivisions of psychology. There are three important periods and several people that established this field. Contributors include Avicenna (980 1037B.C.), Rene Descartes during the renaissance and several key contributors during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The breakthroughs in these periods developed a new science and led the way to the creation of other related subdivisions of psychology. She comments that the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms provides not only formative but substantial protection from inequalities. Unlike the U.S., Mackinnon comments that the Canadian system seeks to alter the poor treatment of disadvantaged groups and amend their status.[6] The Court utilized this approach in the case of R v. Butler where it recognized that the humiliation, degradation, and subordination of women was harm to society as a whole as it led to an inequality.[7] In other words, the court recognized the social and communal harm imposed by pornography, that is to say it recognized the context under which the pornography occurred. Recognizing not only the harm from pornography but more importantly the inequality that it perpetuates, the Canadian courts ruled in an opposite manner to their U.S counterparts. At one point, Mackinnon wonders what warrants the restriction of freedom of speech in the US. One judge once wrote, fear of serious injury cannot alone justify the suppression of free speech . She points out that it is this exact fear a fear of serious injury which justifies the government s prohibition on child pornography.[8] She continues that it is the plight of the abused, which is frequently trivialized in the United States. The big reasons they migrated to the U.S was to work in the gold mines, build railroads, and work in agricultural jobs. Americans didn t like the idea of the Chinese taking all the labor. For that reason the Chinese were being discriminated and a law was passed. The law was known as the Chinese Exclusion Act, it restricted the Chinese from immigrating to the United States for 10 years. It also demanded for all Chinese flying into and out of the country to have a certificate that identified their status. The Act wasn t repealed till 1943. The causes for illegal immigration include the hope for a better life, a safer environment, and the effort needed for the process of naturalization. While an outcome is discrimination. One cause of illegal immigration is the hope for a better life. The biggest reasons many illegal immigrants come to the U.S is because it offers education, better jobs, and better health care. • 27. Pros And Consequences Of The Free Market Capitalist System The free market capitalist system as a whole is detrimental to the human population and the environment because it violates the natural laws that govern them both. American economist Richard Wolff argues that capitalism throughout history has led to the excessive manufacturing of products and economic crises, which have negative social and ecological effects (Wolff, 217). As dependents on the resources of the earth, we have become aware that these resources are finite and should be preserved. Free market capitalism violates this law because it allows corporations to deplete resources in order to maximize their financial gain. In addition, the competitive structure of the capitalist system empowers the few corporation owners and shareholders to achieve excessive wealth while their employees struggle to gain financial stability. This only results in the disproportionate distribution of the benefits and burdens of society that contradicts the principle of individual freedom because it places financial restrictions on the majority of the population. The capitalist emphasis on unrestricted, competitive market transactions enables the exploitation of employees, the depletion of natural resources, and severe economic inequality. Rather than endorsing a governmental system that promotes the unregulated pursuit of financial gain, we should endorse one that recognizes our interdependent nature and facilitates unity and equality. The Argument Of Violent Video Games Learning is a deep human need, like mating and eating, and like all such needs it is meant to be deeply pleasurable to human beings. ― James Paul Gee, Why Video Games Are Good for Your Soul: Pleasure and Learning. Some people have controversial argument that violent video games should be banned, claiming about the content of video games can change the behavior and attitudes of the players. Since the early 2000s, advocates of video games have emphasized their use as an expressive medium, arguing for their protection under the laws governing freedom of speech and also as an educational tool. Violent video games allow players to divert their aggression into the virtual world instead of the real one. Video games have become not only a form of entertainment, but also another way for people to escape reality and to enter their own virtual fantasy. James Gee explains that, if you blame violent video games for horrific events that have occurred is much like putting the blame on food for the cause of obesity. According to the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), 58 percent of all Americans play video games, and nearly half of Americans over 50 play. The organization also found that 45 percent of gamers are women and that the average gamer is 30 years old. Gameplay is also on the rise one study shows that average daily video game play among kids ages 8 to 18 rose from 26 minutes per day in 1999 to almost 110 minutes (nearly two hours) per day by 2009. The numbers are even higher for boys, 25 percent of whom play video games for four or more hours per day. Violent video games should not be ban because violent video games can be good for developing cognitive, physical, and many more hidden skills, help to understand and learn to control emotions, and banning violent video games is against the fourteenth amendment of the United States. With the invention of new types of troop and supply transports, as well as the invention of the telegraph, the war faced a new era of modern combat. Prior to the Civil War, the antebellum period of America brought forth a miniature technological revolution. Starting with canals, private American companies began investing in building new ways to connect the country. After the construction of the Erie Canal, America experienced a boom of canal building that lasted into the 1840s when railroads surpassed them in efficiency. Railroads proved to be faster, more direct, and more reliable than their canal or turnpike cousins. The rail system grew so quickly that in the 1830s there was more milage of railroad tracks than there were canals. Soon, the eastern coast was connected to the western side of the Mississippi River, Chicago, and the Great Lakes. Segregation in urban areas of North Carolina schools could be a concern, and the recent expansion of charter schools has brought up new fears with regard to the district s desegregation efforts. Does school choice impact racial diversity and the achievement gap in North Carolina schools? Residential segregation has been a large focal point in education policies since Brown v. Board of Education overturned the separate but equal act for blacks and whites in 1954. This helped create some of the first federal policies in creating integrated schools in America. The ruling in the Supreme Court Case Parents Involved in Community Schools v. Seattle School District No.1 of 2007, also limited the way that districts could use race to determine school assignment. Both rulings introduced the notion of parental choice of schools having the possibility to positively impact school integration. I wore it all day, even in the morning and at home. I also went so far as to wear it backwards to all of my piano lessons that I teach. This was one of the main reasons I wanted to violate this particular social norm. I knew that I would get good reactions out of my students. Before I put it on backwards, honestly I was a little nervous even though this really isn t that big of a deal. I was also really excited about wearing it in front of the kids I teach. I didn t get a lot of reactions at school so I was looking forward to the lessons. When I answered the door for my first student, she gave me the funniest look, but she didn t say anything to me. Instead, she just walked in and was silent for most of the lesson. My second student asked so many questions when I tried to explain it to her. The next student couldn t even focus on the lesson. She was about six years old so she couldn t stop laughing every time she looked at me. When I would lean over to help her, she would pull on my hood. Pretty soon, I ended up just having her play her songs the best she could so that she would actually get something out of the lesson. • 36. The Effects Of Ambient Air Quality For Environmental... Problem 1: Ans: In the article, the author described mainly two challenges to the process. One challenge will be to routinely share data for these types of analyses at fine geographic and temporal scales without disclosing confidential information. Another challenge will be to develop C R estimates which take into account time, space, or other relevant effect modifiers. (Talbot etc. 2009) Though developing C R estimates using proper modeling methods are very important and will directly provide initiatively studying results, in my opinion, challenges regarding data collection and routinely share are the most important. To measure the public health impacts of ambient air quality for environmental public health tracking, both consistent accurate data and measure approaches are required. Though EPA has developed statistical based ambient air estimates (using HB model) for use in EPHT, the correct modeling and representative results are all based on accuracy data collection. From my personal experience as a biostatistician, if the collected data are not representative or inaccuracy, however well the measuring methods are, researchers will never get the real truth. Thus challenges regarding data collection and routinely share are the most important. They are the foundation of the whole study. Overcoming these challenges are more than necessary. The American Revolutionary War (1775 1783) was the armed conflict between Great Britain and the Colonist. Those residing in the colonies in America were the Colonists. Both parties were known as one entity, however, with time and the lack in similar interests, a schism was created and they became Great Britain and the Americans. As the Colonist grew and tried to expand, King George, the ruler of Great Britain at the time, wanted to take control over western expansion. King George s control propagated to the colonists and were tied to Britain by trade which left them dependent. Due to the lack of currency flowing in the colonies, the colonists used barter and credit to acquire the things necessary to survive ( Why were they Colonies unhappy with the British? ). The King requested that the expansion of the colonist be restricted to the Appalachian Mountains and were ordered east instead. On top of having to move, the colonists were ordered by the King to provide housing for the British Colonies that would be stationed there. The Colonist felt that this was unnecessary because of the French and Indian War being over. From this, the Colonist are put in a position where they feel the need to separate from the king. • 41. The Issue of Identity Formation Depicted in Ralph... All of us go though a period of discovery of our identities. The novel Invisible Man, by Ralph Ellison, addresses the issue of identity formation by following the efforts of an invisible man in search of his identity. He considers himself to be invisible because people refuse to see him for his individuality and intelligence..The narrator in the novel Invisible Man is invisible to others and to himself because of effects of racism and the expectations of others. This is supported in significant parts of the novel such as the battle royal, his time in the Brotherhood, and the Harlem riot. The narrator s invisibility first comes up in chapter one, where he is invited to a community meeting consisting of prestigious white citizens. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ellison also supports his claim when he refers to their dirty ears, the dirt symbolizing the racist trash that has built up in the minds of the white men, affecting their choice not to give the narrator their full attention and respect he deserves as a human being. The narrator shows in the basement that he is truly blind to the white oppression that controls his life. He lets himself be ridiculed by turning into a puppet for the white crowd for entertainment purposes. Still, he holds onto the assumption that if he degrades himself, he will be rewarded in the end. As a result, the narrator does not advance in his journey to find his identity, but rather degrades himself even more and makes himself dependent on other s opinions. Furthermore, the narrator appears invisible to others and to himself during his time as a member of the Brotherhood, an organization that appears in the novel as a euphemism to the Communist Party in real life. The narrator joins the Brotherhood in the hopes of creating an identity for himself within the organization by acquiring recognition as a prestigious black leader. He is under the assumption that the Brotherhood recognizes his ideas, his individuality, his intelligence, and soon becomes dedicated and loyal to their cause. As stated beforehand, The Joy Luck Club took place in the 1980s. Most people assume sexism and discrimination has long died down into the dirt, but it still violently sprouted through the ground with determination instead of withering away. Chinese people were way more strict and cruel when it came to discipline children or being in a marriage. Children, shoved around ruthlessly by mothers, and wives; still experiencing mistreatment by their sorry excuses of a husband. Under those circumstances, Amy Tan portrays an accurate representation of what it was back in the 1900s for women of Chinese descent. • 45. Legal Journals On American Law Privacy, meaning the right to be left alone, has intellectual roots tracing back to the 19th century. On December 15, 1890, Samuel D. Warren and Louis D. Brandeis had their article The Right to Privacy published in the Harvard Law Review. This article was highly regarded as one of the exceptional examples of the effect legal journals have on American law, and was the first of many future law review discussions. It is our purpose to consider whether the existing law affords a principle which can properly be invoked to protect the privacy of the individual; and if it does what the nature and extent of such protection is (Gregory, Kalven, and Epstein 1133). Warren and Brandeis stressed the importance and necessity for some form of protection for the private individual when the press is overstepping their boundaries and the indecency their gossip creates. Several decades later, in August of 1960, William L. Prosser published his article Privacy in the California Law Review. In this article he outlined the four classifications of privacy law which are as follows: 1. The second classification refers to publication of private matters, which will be the ... According to Wegs, Arnold is far more than a grotesque portrait of a psychopathic killer masquerading as a teenager; he also has all the traditional sinister traits of that arch deceiver and source of grotesque terror, the devil (Wegs 68).
