Erasmus s Abuse Of The Catholic Church
A Dutch man named Erasmus was one of the first to become angered with the Church about its
abuses. Erasmus was greatly displeased, but not displeased enough to leave the Church. Martin Luther
(a German professor, composer, priest, and monk) tagged in where Erasmus left off and became the
father of the Reformation. Luther argued that there were many issues within the Roman Catholic
Church which he outlined in his Ninety five Thesis. Some of these included the abuses of the Church,
the opulence of the Church, and the overemphasis of good works. Martin Luther recognized and
brought to attention the abuses of the Catholic Church. One of these was the selling of Church offices.
Men were allowed to offer the Church a great sum of money to have a Church office such as a Bishop.
Once they were in office long enough, they were able to regain the money they invested in the
position and more. The Church was also selling indulgences, in which a person could supposedly
exchange money for the forgiveness of his or her sins. Luther a, lso believed that the Pope and Rome
had excessive power. Furthermore, Luther brought the opulence of the Church to attention. The
Catholic Church advocated giving to the poor and helping the less fortunate, yet the Church leadership
and office holders were very ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Luther struggled with his religion while Catholic, but then he came to believe that the Church should
be more based on scripture. During his intense bible study, he came to the conclusion that due to Jesus
dying on the cross, everybody had been saved. By this standard, the good works emphasized by the
Church were meaningless. He also believed that the sacraments were overemphasized. For example,
the sacrament of Confession cannot save you since it is a personal work, and during the sacrament of
the Eucharist, the process of transubstantiation does not

Persephone And The Pomegranate
The only legend I have ever loved is/ the story of a daughter lost in hell, starts the tragic and deeply
personal poem The Pomegranate. Here, and throughout the poem, Boland allegorically refers to the
Greek myth for the seasons to explain her fear of her daughter s growth into adulthood.
The myth tells of Mother earth, Demeter, and her daughter Persephone who is kidnapped by Hades to
be his wife in the Underworld. Deeply saddened, Demeter stops tending for the earth and as a result
the crops stop growing. Zeus begs Hades to release Persephone so that the humans do not starve.
Hades agrees under the condition that Persephone does not eat any food while in the underworld, but
tricks her into taking a single bite of a pomegranate. Persephone ... Show more content on

And with an exclamation, Boland is reminded of the pomegranate! because of the uncut fruit her
daughter is eating. Finally there is a way she can stop the passage of time, stop the inevitable coming
of age that will leave her daughterless. Poor Persephone could have been safe if it weren t for that
pomegranate, but Boland would make her daughter safe, remind her not to eat it, not to fall into the
trap of

Government Corruption In Mexico City
The Olympic games are a two weeklong tournament where the best athletes compete with solidarity
and fair play to develop humanism and respect among every nation. Host candidates are chosen by the
IOC (International Olympic Committee) according to specific demands and requirements.
Nevertheless, chosen cities are meant to promise their entire commitment and effort for investing in
infrastructure, public security, public health and tourism. Despite this optimism, the prevailing
concern is that the costs will increase for those living in the host nation, while the mayor benefits will
be for the IOC and all the multinational partners involved. For example, while Brazil spends billions
of dollars, the IOC is expected to earn billions too through sponsorship deals, owning TV rights and
many other income fees. While new stadiums and new luxury hotels are built, citizens living in the
favelas will be forced to leave their homes just for the government to exhibit the perfect image of a
role model host. Of course everyone knows what the people are protesting about: government ... Show

Instead of spending millions of dollars in luxurious facilities, the budget can be reduced, avoiding any
type of corruption during the construction. Also, those said facilities should be built on cities where
there will be a long term use once the Games are over. To illustrate, when Mexico City held the
Olympiads, the government promised that the facilities were investments meant for the citizens to give
them the opportunity to practice sports with the best resources. Nowadays, Mexico City keeps
upgrading and renovating the Olympiad facilities, which should be done by every nation who will be

Identifying War Essay
Identifying War
In order to describe what war is one has to define it. According to The Collins Dictionary war is
1. open armed conflict between two or more parties, nations or states... 2. a particular armed conflict:
the 1973 war in Middle East. 3. the techniques of armed conflict as a study, science, or profession. 4.
and conflict or contest: the war against crime. 5. (modifier) of, resulting from a characteristic of war:
war damage; war history.
This is obviously straight to the point, but does not go into enough detail to fully describe what war is.
Clausewitz chooses not to follow the definitions put forward by, what he calls, publicists , in Vom
Kriege . Instead he puts forward ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Here, force is everything that the attacking group can muster together in order to destroy the other
group s will to fight and bring a quick, decisive victory, and can involve killing soldiers as well as
destroying important buildings.
Wars are not always like this, and with the introduction of nuclear weapons, Van Creveld believes that
conventional war is effectively at its end. Also, if this Total War was true then more groups would use
nuclear weapons in order to win the war, but they do not. This is due to mutually assured destruction
and the risk of a backlash from other nuclear powers. There has been plans to try and incorporate
nuclear weapons into conventional war, but this was unsuccessful.
When considering what is war, it is not simply a case of the use of force by the attacking party, but one
has to take in account the opposed force. Without this opposed force it would not be war, it would
simply be a massacre or perhaps genocide. The form of opposition force, like an attackers force, can
vary, whether they respond in an offensive or defensive manner. If they are defending the war will be
restricted to their own turf and their forces concentrated on preventing attack and protecting certain
people or buildings. However, the offensive

The Voyages Of The Slave Trade Voyages
Other risks that affected the slave trade voyage, indirectly to investors while directly to the ship
owner, captain and others aboard included natural disasters due to weather and navigation, attacks by
pirates or competing trading countries, slave rebellions, and diseases as mentioned before. The
weather and natural disasters is not widely cited as a great risk to these voyages. Nonetheless, it is
imperative in the analysis if we are trying to capture a complete picture of the supply line of slaves to
the colonies. At the very start of the trade in 1514, voyages only crossed the Southern Atlantic Ocean,
but as the trade grew by 1650, and slaves started to be shipped to North America and some to Europe,
as shown in figure 2, captains also had to face the rough conditions that came with sailing the northern
Atlantic Ocean (Slave voyages, 2014)
Figure 2. This table shows the destination of the voyages from the beginning of the trade, until it was
abolished. Notice that slaves were not shipped farther north until later in the slave trade, starting with
the British Caribbean and moving north. (Slaves Embarked Table, 2014)
While crossing the Atlantic, fears of being attacked by pirates, or taken over by a Spanish ship were
very real (Eltis et al., 2010). The reasons for such attacks are clear; the ships transported valuable
goods (slaves, among other goods such as gold and ivory) and was very vulnerable in the middle of
the ocean, with only a small crew aboard to defend it.

Personal Sacrifice In A Tale Of Two Cities

the lives of others. Sydney had always been a man full of regrets, and never wanted to change. His life
was falling apart and he refused to confront it, until he fell head over heels with a young girl. His
improvement eventually led to self discovery, increased self esteem, and allowed many of the
character s lives to prosper. In A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, Sydney Carton sacrifices

that Lucie would not be hurt by this. He comforted her and made (quote about him promising her

was tension prior to the marriage. Carton had known throughout the novel that he would never be
good enough to marry Lucie, so he did everything in his power to ensure her safety. He would protect

Art of the Baroque and Neoclassicism Movements
The Rape of Proserpina and Psyche Revived by Cupid s Kiss
Germaine Fahie
FAS 202: Introduction to Humanities II
Julianne Poncet
February 19, 2015
The purpose of this essay is to evaluate two art pieces that were created by two tremendously gifted
individuals during the Baroque to the contemporary period. Masters of their movements, both
sculptors were able to create masterpieces that revealed an unfolding event that could be read by their
viewers from all sides.
The first piece of art to be reviewed is the The Rape of Persopina (1621 22), also known as The Rape
of Persephone, which is a large marble sculpture, 255cm in height, which was crafted by Gian
Lorenzo Bernini, at age ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Overpowered by her own curiosity, Psyche, no sooner than she had opened the flask, fell into a
deathly sleep after inhaling the deathly vapors (Closer Look at Psyche). In sculpting his masterpiece
of this genre, Canova managed to combine the classical mode with consummate eroticism when he
captured the lover s embrace. Cupid and Psyche are turned towards each other in sensual love, and
Canova had succeeded in presenting a highly expressive treatment of the theme of love from Greek
mythology. The upward ranged wings of Amor emphasize the divine, about to embrace mortal Psyche.
The fulfillment of the love between the two is tangibly near (Cupid and Psyche).
The masterworks of Bernini and Canova shared similarities along the lines of the sculptors works
were crafted with precision and a keen eye for detail and were successful in giving their works a
realistic effect. Both workers were masters in their own time and were able to manipulate marble to as
though they were constructing a painting. They both incorporated classical forms in their works,
depicting great scenes from mythical stories that could be viewed in great detail at a 360 degree angle.
Some of the differences noted between the two pieces were merely based on the characteristics
between the two eras. The works completed in the Neoclassical era were portrayed in a more serious,
unemotional, and

Analysis Of Socrates As A Teacher
I Don t Always Drink...but When I Do, I Drink Hemlock Shakes
(An Analysis Into the Interesting Methods of Socrates as a Teacher)
Commonly the most widely renowned teachers in history often are remembered as the most intriguing
teachers in history. Scholars often ask, what made their teaching style so different, or what was so
unique about this educator? Perhaps the most investigated teachers of the world often left the smallest
written mark on the world. No exception to this, is the philosopher, Socrates. Widely known as one of
the greatest Athenian philosophers, he never wrote anything down, and is theorized as illiterate. The
only record of this man lies in his student, Plato s Dialogues, as well as references from other writers

Isn t that the case, Meletos, both with horses and with all other animals? (Plato, 512). In a nutshell, the
Socratic Approach initiates with an allegory or question, expecting an answer which will lead Socrates
to another question, and another, until finally any argument to the initial question is squashed and
disproven, without finding an actual solution to the original question. This leaves listeners with an
open ended question to find an answer for themselves based on personal knowledge and beliefs.
Socrates teaching method does not treat students as empty vessels to be filled with knowledge of facts,
formulae and theorems. Rather, the teacher and students embark on a voyage of discovery. The teacher
does not so much impart knowledge as elicit knowledge, (Masud). Overall, his teaching method was a
very introspective method that keeps great minds challenged to this day.
In addition to a strategic approach to his teaching, Socrates also had very high expectations for
successful students of his, and their thought processes. Not only were his questions intentional, he had
specific expectations from each of his students. Socrates wasn t after brainless disciples. He was trying
to create a new breed of thinkers, ones who explored the world with their mind,
(MythologyTeacher.com). Socrates expected students to pick up on his teaching approach and be
courageous enough to propel his discussions forward with their own questions. An example of a

Legalized Drinking
Legally Drinking In the United States Explaining the topic to any adult, they mainly all have the same
idea; teenagers just want to party, they do not act their age, but sometimes that is not always the case.
Once a male teenager turns eighteen, what does he have to sign up for by law? The draft. Teenagers
are always looked down upon once they become adults, as if older adults think they are not ready for
what is to come, but once they make a mistake against the law, the first thing to happens is they get
tried as an adult. In all of these situations, the same thing is reoccurring; any teenager that turns
eighteen is considered an adult, but if they were to drink, like any other twenty one year old adult,
they would get charged and tried as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many young adults do not find that fair. What the law is saying is any young adult can be tried as an
adult but are not allowed to drink and adult beverage. To me, it does not sound fair to do; if anyone is
considered an adult by law, than by law they should be allowed to do adult things. By law, drinking
alcohol underage, or having possession of alcohol, can be a misdemeanor punishable up to a year in
jail, and a $4,000 fine. Personally, this just does not seem fair. Other examples of misdemeanors are:
simple assaults, disorderly conduct, domestic violence, indecent exposure, prostitution, theft,
trespassing, and vandalism. So, basically, domestic violence and underage drinking could end up
having the same punishment. Publically beating someone up and drinking at someone s house
underage does not seem like they fit in the same category; both are punishable up to a year with a
pretty hefty fine. Also, getting caught drinking and driving has the same punishment as just drinking
underage. To me, this almost encourages drunk driving because it has the same punishment, so, why

A. Plan of Investigation
After a devastating civil war in Korea in early 1950s, South Korea faced a new, unprecedented phase
in forming a constitutional government with assistance from the United States and the United Nations.
Korea especially experienced several crucial reforms in politics and in society due to introduction of
democracy and diffusion of Western culture. To determine the extent of contributions by the United
States and the United Nations in late 1950s, the investigation will examine the nature and extent of
three major commitments in reconstruction: injection of democracy into Korean government,
reconstruction of politics, and societal reforms for modernization. Not only scholarly sources from
databases, such as EBSCO and CLIO, but also books were used as references in order to determine the
extent of commitments. The Coldest Winter by Halberstam and Grand Expectations by Patterson were
mainly used to advocate American support, as well as Koreans perspective on modernization.
B. Summary of Evidence
After the cruel civil war, South Korea faced a new phase of history full of new adoptions into both
government and society. Under constant supervision of the U.S. and U.N. of which

Essay about Ideologies, Narrative, Stereotypes and Discourses
According to French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, a habitus is referring to a person s way of thinking,
acting, and behaving. A habitus is a structure that helps a person comprehend and deal with society. It
can be simply seen as a merger of society and the individual. (Wysocka, Paulina, 2013). Habitus is
both a structured structure the effect of the actions of, and our interactions with, others and a
structuring structure it suggests and constrains our future actions (Bourdieu, 1992). In other words,
habitus is both the embodiment of our social location (i.e., class, ethnicity, race, sexuality, gender,

often they present a distorted version of the world. (Croteau, David, Hoynes, William, Milan, Stefania,

Farm Bill Essay
SNAP Back to the Basics
The original intent of the food programs developed by USDA were to dispose of surplus farm
production created by farm subsidy programs. (Edwards, 2016) Since original implementations of the
food programs, farm groups and anti poverty groups have rallied behind these subsidies, requesting
more government support at the expense of the taxpayer for their organizations. These government
handouts have created an entitled, subsidy dependent monster that has hands reaching out from

Insufficient caloric intake has been replaced with an obese, ailing health, low income population.
According to a study conducted by the American Diabetes Association, Americans who live in the
most poverty dense counties are the most prone to obesity. These rates of obesity were reviewed
across 3,139 counties in the U.S. (Levine, 2011)
A study conducted by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) concluded that the literature is
inconclusive regarding whether SNAP alleviates hunger and malnutrition in low income households.
(Montgomery, 2013) The (GAO) also stated that, those who choose to participate in food assistance
programs generally have greater difficulty meeting their food needs and tend to be more food insecure
compared to others that are eligible for programs but do not participate. (Montgomery, 2013) What
this study suggests is that the economically burdensome Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
is not only lucrative in cost, but fails to meet its objective of making a sizable impact on food
insecurity and hunger issues within the United States most nutritionally insecure counties.
In 2016 alone, SNAP cost U.S. taxpayers 78 billion. (Edwards, 2016) SNAP eligibility is determined
by the recipient s assets and income. A U.S. citizen becomes unable to qualify for SNAP subsidization
when he or she is no longer within 130 percent of the poverty level. (Edwards, 2016) This

Proximal Humerus Fracture
EVOLUTION OF TREATMENT With advent of advanced medical care, the life span of humans has
considerably increased. This in turn has increased the populations of the aged people. With the
increased life span and need to be independent patients are now demanding for a better functional
outcome following a fracture fixation. Management of proximal humerus fractures in the elderly has
always posed a challenge to the orthopaedicians in their daily practice. The earliest documentation
regarding proximal humerus fractures was by the Egyptians dating back to 1600 BC. The Edwin
Smith Papyrus (copied circa 1600 BC) in columns XII and XIII has documented about three cases of
proximal humerus treated by bandaging and splinting technique [Figure 1]. 1 Later in 415 BC,
Hippocrates approach to fractures of humerus was noted in De Fracturis and also the Hippocratic
Corpus (circa 440 340 BC). In Hippocratic mode of reduction for fractures of humerus (De Fracturis,
VIII) the patient is made to sit on a high stool with a hanging rod in the armpit. Then the elbow is

Celsus stated that ...there is least danger when the middle of the bone is fractured. The nearer the
fracture is to either the upper or the lower end the worse it is; for they are at once more painful and
more difficult to treat (De Medicina, VIII, 10). According to Celsus the bandages should be longer in
proximal humerus fracture than if the shaft or distal part is broken. He also recommended making the
turns of the bandage numerous rather than tight. His method differed from Hippocrates in using six

Compediate Reunion
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Huntington Beach, California) According to GroupTravel.org, approximately 66 percent of family
reunions take place during the summer months. More than half of these reunions involve somewhere
between 50 and 149 people, and keeping track of everyone s name can be difficult. This is especially
true when families only get together once a year of less often. Lanyards USA in California
recommends providing attendees with lanyards and name tags, as this helps to ease the introduction
process for those who don t know each other and those who are having trouble remembering names.
Printed Lanyards allow guests to recognize one another when they are in a public place, such as an
amusement park or other large gathering site, and the use of name tags ensures they don t have to keep
asking for names to be repeated. Identifying others becomes a much easier task, thus the ... Show

If the event is to be restricted to family members only, the lanyard allows those at the door to quickly
determine who belongs and who doesn t, and families are sure to find numerous other ways their
lanyards can smooth the reunion, Montrenes continues.
Planning a family reunion involves coordination of multiple details, and there are times when certain
details tend to be overlooked. For those who find they forgot to order lanyards or didn t even consider
making use of these accessories, time may be of the essence. In this situation, in stock lanyards may
offer a better option. For those with more time, however, custom lanyards tend to be preferred.
Consumers turn to use for their family reunion lanyards, as they know we have a large inventory in
stock and can ship right away. Customers who want custom lanyards find these items can be delivered
in as little as five days, thus everyone can select the option that best meets their needs, Montrenes
declares.

A metaphor, as defined in our glossary, is a figure of speech in which an implied comparison is made

The View Of The Leaning Process
The leaning process is very complex but my philosophy of learning is founded on a relationship of
credibility, knowledge and, escalation of mental grows. Some of the greatest minds are true
fundamental to my statement such as Socrates the Greek philosopher and the main source of Western
thought; The English physicist and mathematician Isaac Newton, most famous for his law of
gravitation, was instrumental in the scientific revolution of the 17th century; Italian scientist and
scholar Galileo made pioneering observations that laid the foundation for modern physics and
astronomy and ; Albert Einstein was a German born physicist who developed the general theory of
relativity, among other feats. He is considered the most influential physicist of the 20th century. These
scientists are the inspiration to my philosophy.
The importance of credibility
The knowledge base of a person can be corrupted by an outside influential(s) that could hinder the
knowledge material transmittable to other(s). This knowledge could be influence negativity without
notice by the transmitter or facilitator some examples are; any kind status, fallacious knowledge,

Prejudice And Ethnic Cleansing
Prejudice: a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience. Ethnic Cleansing:
an extreme version of acting on prejudices by the mass expulsion or killing of members of an
unwanted ethnic or religious group in a society. These two phrases have the power to change the
course of history and leave an unimaginable number hurt in its wake. The most well known example
of prejudice leading to ethnic cleansing is that of Nazi Germany and despite lack of coverage, has not
been the only one. On the contrary, there has been numerous account of prejudice and ethnic cleansing
in more countries including our own, in regards to the Japanese Internment. Thus, residents of the US
cannot express the ideology of its always them, not us from the small information learned in school. In
fact, these same phrases are still in effect today with the events transpiring in Darfur. It is a painful
trend of events that one could argue as being part of the human condition; Yet without proper
reflection of ourselves and the world who can say what is true for the human race.
Take a minute and think about the word Genocide. From this word only, many will provide the
example of Nazi Germany. From 1934 1945, the Nazi Party began a hunt for cleansing Germany of
the Jews, who were unjustly held responsible for why Germany hit hard times. Furthermore, the Jews
were put into camps and interned for what may have been the rest of their lives. In Photo A, prisoners

Common Wealth Address ( 1932 )
10.In F. D. R. s Common Wealth Address (1932) he discusses the problems with government and their
solutions starting with the problem that a majority of the men who created national government were
more than not, cruel in how they set things up. The solution is that while they were cruel, they set up
central government, which was a safe haven for the people. The central government kept out national
government to a point on certain issues such as civil disputes, war and keeping the peace. The national
government by many was also thought to only benefit the few and many of those who founded it to
keep the balance of power just the central governments were also key. The creation of the state or
central government balanced the power against the national government Another problem that was
foreseen in the government was the belief that popular government was dangerous and unfeasible.
Government could be a great or awful thing and protecting people from government in firing on their
rights and becoming an awful thing was Jefferson in the rights that needed to be set. His first rights
included those under the name personal competency and property rights with these right people to an
extent could live their life the way they see fit, but still needed the government in order to protect
those rights and to make sure other powers or people, including the government itself could not
infringe upon them. The government was set to not take people s rights, but to give and protect them,

Hip Hop And Its Effect On Society
Many people believe that Hip Hop is detrimental to society. I do believe that a lot of hip hop culture
revolves around negative things, whether it be objectification of women, violence, drugs, pimping, the
care free lifestyle, now worrying about anyone but yourself, and being materialistic. All of that does
not lead society in a good direction. And if you as a black person consider that to be you culture, that
hip hop is your culture, and the hip hop you listen too predominantly promotes things such as violence
rioting, and stealing, then to say that that culture is partially responsible for what is happening is
correct. Before around the time my dad was growing up hip hop was positive, then what starting
happening is NWA (Niggas With Attitude) came out, and all these other groups that were just trying to
tell it how it is or tell it how it was in their hood, constantly pushing violence, violence, and violence.
This became much more acceptable. Anything that permeates the culture the way hip hop has or the
way movies have, they have an effect. Young people have taken on gangster mentalities like, do
whatever you have to do to get by, if you have to sell drugs and murder then do what you have to do,
and if someone disrespects then fight for respect. And all of this that you hear in music affects not
only the black culture but also society as a whole, and if you do not believe that then I believe are
delusional. No one person, no one group of music, no culture is

Marcellus Edson patented peanut paste obtained from grinding roasted peanuts [3]. After few years in
1895, Dr. Jhon Kellogg, patented the method of producing peanut butter from raw peanuts. There were
several issues relating to separation of oil from the peanut butter. This was overcome by a chemist,
Joseph Rosefield, in 1922, who used hydrogenated oil such as cotton seed oil, rapeseed oil as a

In The Power Of One, by Bryce Courtenay, the main character Peekay undergoes a brutal childhood of
constant beat downs and bed wetting. Living in an extremely prejudice society that South Africa is is
not exactly easy either, especially if you are an Englishman like Peekay. Despite these horrible
situations that Peekay has to live in, he always gets through on top, but he would not have been able to
do this well without the right people who taught him what he needs to be a powerful man. But with all
the odds stacked against Peekay, he gets through thanks to the influence of friends and mentors like
Hoppie, Doc, and Geel Piet, Peekay becomes the strong independent man that he is now.

go back home with his Mom and Grandpa. He is greeted by at his cabin by Hoppie Groenewald,

How Far Was Germany Responsible For World War 1 Essay
Although Germany had a large responsibility in the outbreak of World War One, Germany cannot be
solely be blamed for World War One commencing as other European nations were equally
responsible. There are several key contributors to the commencement of World War One. These
include Nationalism, imperialism, the assassination of the archduke and the alliances. These
contributing factors will justify why Germany is not to be solely blamed for the outbreak of World
War One.
Nationalism was a major contributing factor to the outbreak of World War One. During the lead up to
the World War One, the 6 major powers of Europe each had nationalistic plans in which they were

During the lead up to World War One, rising tensions and rivalries had caused the major European
powers to split into two major alliances by 1907. The Triple Entente was an alliance consisting of
Russia, France and Britain. While the Triple Alliance consisted of Germany, Austria Hungary and
Italy. Many events that occurred caused the tensions between the European nations to intensify.
Between 1905 and 1913, tensions among the great powers increased as a result of crises in northern
Africa and the Balkans. The great powers resolved these crises, although hostility generally increased
among those involved. As a result of the rising tensions after the assassination of the Archduke Franz
Ferdinand, On July 28, Austria Hungary declared war on Serbia, as Russia promised to assist Serbia, it
would likely involve their allies France and possibly Britain. The tenuous peace between Europe s
great powers collapsed and within a week, Russia, Belgium, France, Great Britain and Serbia had

Mary Shelley s Presentation of the Relationship Between Frankenstein and the Creature
It was on a dreary night of November that I beheld the accomplishment of my toils. These are the
famous words of Mary Shelley that foretold the birth of Frankenstein s monster. A tale of catastrophe,
love and endless yet hopeless toil; the tale of Victor Frankenstein is a perfect example of early gothic
literature. Born on a dreary summer in 1816, his story has been immortalised in not only the pages of
many books but also on the silver screen.
Like many of its genre, Frankenstein is a terrifically dark yet pioneering story. Its graveyard settings,
the persecuted maiden, and the seemingly forlorn character ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Time and time again throughout the book this is proven through not only Frankenstein s ever
persistent hunting of the creature but also the creatures need to be close to Frankenstein. It is this
relationship that Mary Shelley exploits, through the use of language, which keeps the reader interested
throughout the book.
It is not until the fifth chapter that Frankenstein s lust for the creature, and ensuing obsession for the
gift of life is quite realised. Set on a dreary night of November , as the rain pattered dismally against
the panes , Mary Shelly immediately provides the reader with a classic gothic scene, readying them
for the obvious catastrophes that are about to ensue. The addition of the tension provided by
Frankenstein s comments as he collected the instruments of life around him , and suffered with an
anxiety that almost amounted to agony stand well in giving the reader some idea of how long this
moment has been in preparation.
Shelley goes on to provide a gruesome description of the creature: His yellow skin scarcely covered
the muscles … his hair was of a lustrous black … his teeth a pearly white … these luxuriance s only
formed a more horrid contrast with his watery eyes . It is at this description that Frankenstein
comments of it being beautiful . This reaction could be compared to that of a parent whose love for
their child is so obsessive and

  • 2. Erasmus s Abuse Of The Catholic Church A Dutch man named Erasmus was one of the first to become angered with the Church about its abuses. Erasmus was greatly displeased, but not displeased enough to leave the Church. Martin Luther (a German professor, composer, priest, and monk) tagged in where Erasmus left off and became the father of the Reformation. Luther argued that there were many issues within the Roman Catholic Church which he outlined in his Ninety five Thesis. Some of these included the abuses of the Church, the opulence of the Church, and the overemphasis of good works. Martin Luther recognized and brought to attention the abuses of the Catholic Church. One of these was the selling of Church offices. Men were allowed to offer the Church a great sum of money to have a Church office such as a Bishop. Once they were in office long enough, they were able to regain the money they invested in the position and more. The Church was also selling indulgences, in which a person could supposedly exchange money for the forgiveness of his or her sins. Luther a, lso believed that the Pope and Rome had excessive power. Furthermore, Luther brought the opulence of the Church to attention. The Catholic Church advocated giving to the poor and helping the less fortunate, yet the Church leadership and office holders were very ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Luther struggled with his religion while Catholic, but then he came to believe that the Church should be more based on scripture. During his intense bible study, he came to the conclusion that due to Jesus dying on the cross, everybody had been saved. By this standard, the good works emphasized by the Church were meaningless. He also believed that the sacraments were overemphasized. For example, the sacrament of Confession cannot save you since it is a personal work, and during the sacrament of the Eucharist, the process of transubstantiation does not ... • 3. Persephone And The Pomegranate The only legend I have ever loved is/ the story of a daughter lost in hell, starts the tragic and deeply personal poem The Pomegranate. Here, and throughout the poem, Boland allegorically refers to the Greek myth for the seasons to explain her fear of her daughter s growth into adulthood. The myth tells of Mother earth, Demeter, and her daughter Persephone who is kidnapped by Hades to be his wife in the Underworld. Deeply saddened, Demeter stops tending for the earth and as a result the crops stop growing. Zeus begs Hades to release Persephone so that the humans do not starve. Hades agrees under the condition that Persephone does not eat any food while in the underworld, but tricks her into taking a single bite of a pomegranate. Persephone ... Government Corruption In Mexico City The Olympic games are a two weeklong tournament where the best athletes compete with solidarity and fair play to develop humanism and respect among every nation. Host candidates are chosen by the IOC (International Olympic Committee) according to specific demands and requirements. Nevertheless, chosen cities are meant to promise their entire commitment and effort for investing in infrastructure, public security, public health and tourism. Despite this optimism, the prevailing concern is that the costs will increase for those living in the host nation, while the mayor benefits will be for the IOC and all the multinational partners involved. For example, while Brazil spends billions of dollars, the IOC is expected to earn billions too through sponsorship deals, owning TV rights and many other income fees. While new stadiums and new luxury hotels are built, citizens living in the favelas will be forced to leave their homes just for the government to exhibit the perfect image of a role model host. • 5. Identifying War Essay Identifying War In order to describe what war is one has to define it. According to The Collins Dictionary war is 1. open armed conflict between two or more parties, nations or states... 2. a particular armed conflict: the 1973 war in Middle East. 3. the techniques of armed conflict as a study, science, or profession. 4. and conflict or contest: the war against crime. 5. Here, force is everything that the attacking group can muster together in order to destroy the other group s will to fight and bring a quick, decisive victory, and can involve killing soldiers as well as destroying important buildings. Wars are not always like this, and with the introduction of nuclear weapons, Van Creveld believes that conventional war is effectively at its end. Also, if this Total War was true then more groups would use nuclear weapons in order to win the war, but they do not. This is due to mutually assured destruction and the risk of a backlash from other nuclear powers. There has been plans to try and incorporate nuclear weapons into conventional war, but this was unsuccessful. When considering what is war, it is not simply a case of the use of force by the attacking party, but one has to take in account the opposed force. Without this opposed force it would not be war, it would simply be a massacre or perhaps genocide. The form of opposition force, like an attackers force, can vary, whether they respond in an offensive or defensive manner. If they are defending the war will be restricted to their own turf and their forces concentrated on preventing attack and protecting certain people or buildings. However, the offensive ... • 6. The Voyages Of The Slave Trade Voyages Other risks that affected the slave trade voyage, indirectly to investors while directly to the ship owner, captain and others aboard included natural disasters due to weather and navigation, attacks by pirates or competing trading countries, slave rebellions, and diseases as mentioned before. The weather and natural disasters is not widely cited as a great risk to these voyages. Nonetheless, it is imperative in the analysis if we are trying to capture a complete picture of the supply line of slaves to the colonies. At the very start of the trade in 1514, voyages only crossed the Southern Atlantic Ocean, but as the trade grew by 1650, and slaves started to be shipped to North America and some to Europe, as shown in figure 2, captains also had to face the rough conditions that came with sailing the northern Atlantic Ocean (Slave voyages, 2014) Figure 2. This table shows the destination of the voyages from the beginning of the trade, until it was abolished. Notice that slaves were not shipped farther north until later in the slave trade, starting with the British Caribbean and moving north. (Slaves Embarked Table, 2014) While crossing the Atlantic, fears of being attacked by pirates, or taken over by a Spanish ship were very real (Eltis et al., 2010). The reasons for such attacks are clear; the ships transported valuable goods (slaves, among other goods such as gold and ivory) and was very vulnerable in the middle of the ocean, with only a small crew aboard to defend it. ... Overpowered by her own curiosity, Psyche, no sooner than she had opened the flask, fell into a deathly sleep after inhaling the deathly vapors (Closer Look at Psyche). In sculpting his masterpiece of this genre, Canova managed to combine the classical mode with consummate eroticism when he captured the lover s embrace. Cupid and Psyche are turned towards each other in sensual love, and Canova had succeeded in presenting a highly expressive treatment of the theme of love from Greek mythology. The upward ranged wings of Amor emphasize the divine, about to embrace mortal Psyche. The fulfillment of the love between the two is tangibly near (Cupid and Psyche). The masterworks of Bernini and Canova shared similarities along the lines of the sculptors works were crafted with precision and a keen eye for detail and were successful in giving their works a realistic effect. Analysis Of Socrates As A Teacher I Don t Always Drink...but When I Do, I Drink Hemlock Shakes (An Analysis Into the Interesting Methods of Socrates as a Teacher) Commonly the most widely renowned teachers in history often are remembered as the most intriguing teachers in history. Scholars often ask, what made their teaching style so different, or what was so unique about this educator? Perhaps the most investigated teachers of the world often left the smallest written mark on the world. No exception to this, is the philosopher, Socrates. Widely known as one of the greatest Athenian philosophers, he never wrote anything down, and is theorized as illiterate. Isn t that the case, Meletos, both with horses and with all other animals? (Plato, 512). In a nutshell, the Socratic Approach initiates with an allegory or question, expecting an answer which will lead Socrates to another question, and another, until finally any argument to the initial question is squashed and disproven, without finding an actual solution to the original question. This leaves listeners with an open ended question to find an answer for themselves based on personal knowledge and beliefs. Socrates teaching method does not treat students as empty vessels to be filled with knowledge of facts, formulae and theorems. Rather, the teacher and students embark on a voyage of discovery. The teacher does not so much impart knowledge as elicit knowledge, (Masud). Overall, his teaching method was a very introspective method that keeps great minds challenged to this day. In addition to a strategic approach to his teaching, Socrates also had very high expectations for successful students of his, and their thought processes. Not only were his questions intentional, he had specific expectations from each of his students. Socrates wasn t after brainless disciples. He was trying to create a new breed of thinkers, ones who explored the world with their mind, (MythologyTeacher.com). Socrates expected students to pick up on his teaching approach and be courageous enough to propel his discussions forward with their own questions. An example of a model student, ... Legalized Drinking Legally Drinking In the United States Explaining the topic to any adult, they mainly all have the same idea; teenagers just want to party, they do not act their age, but sometimes that is not always the case. Once a male teenager turns eighteen, what does he have to sign up for by law? The draft. Teenagers are always looked down upon once they become adults, as if older adults think they are not ready for what is to come, but once they make a mistake against the law, the first thing to happens is they get tried as an adult. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many young adults do not find that fair. What the law is saying is any young adult can be tried as an adult but are not allowed to drink and adult beverage. To me, it does not sound fair to do; if anyone is considered an adult by law, than by law they should be allowed to do adult things. By law, drinking alcohol underage, or having possession of alcohol, can be a misdemeanor punishable up to a year in jail, and a $4,000 fine. Personally, this just does not seem fair. Other examples of misdemeanors are: simple assaults, disorderly conduct, domestic violence, indecent exposure, prostitution, theft, trespassing, and vandalism. So, basically, domestic violence and underage drinking could end up having the same punishment. Publically beating someone up and drinking at someone s house underage does not seem like they fit in the same category; both are punishable up to a year with a pretty hefty fine. Also, getting caught drinking and driving has the same punishment as just drinking underage. To me, this almost encourages drunk driving because it has the same punishment, so, why ... Danny Choi #003318 0046 Internal Assessment History of America HL Instructor: Leslie Grisham Spring 2015 Word Count: 1963 A. Plan of Investigation After a devastating civil war in Korea in early 1950s, South Korea faced a new, unprecedented phase in forming a constitutional government with assistance from the United States and the United Nations. Korea especially experienced several crucial reforms in politics and in society due to introduction of democracy and diffusion of Western culture. To determine the extent of contributions by the United States and the United Nations in late 1950s, the investigation will examine the nature and extent of three major commitments in reconstruction: injection of democracy into Korean government, reconstruction of politics, and societal reforms for modernization. Not only scholarly sources from databases, such as EBSCO and CLIO, but also books were used as references in order to determine the extent of commitments. The Coldest Winter by Halberstam and Grand Expectations by Patterson were mainly used to advocate American support, as well as Koreans perspective on modernization. B. According to a study conducted by the American Diabetes Association, Americans who live in the most poverty dense counties are the most prone to obesity. These rates of obesity were reviewed across 3,139 counties in the U.S. (Levine, 2011) A study conducted by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) concluded that the literature is inconclusive regarding whether SNAP alleviates hunger and malnutrition in low income households. (Montgomery, 2013) The (GAO) also stated that, those who choose to participate in food assistance programs generally have greater difficulty meeting their food needs and tend to be more food insecure compared to others that are eligible for programs but do not participate.
