History of the Declaration of Independence and The...
In one corner we have a nation, fed up with the corruption and constant bullying of their big
brother nation, seeking the approval of the world for a revolution. In the other corner we have a
nation, bent on gaining the equality among all individuals in their state, coming together to lay
down the law to their king. Both America and France had a thirst for a new equal nation and
government in which power was given to the people and not to a tyrannical figure. Individuals
from both of these countries sat down and wrote up a letter of declaration in demand of the
freedom that they so rightfully deserved. Both of them won that freedom, as the Declaration of
Independence and the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen flourished... Show more

The first and most prominent argument I have with these two documents is there method in
itself. Both declarations gave direct and justified reasons for a revolution, but the Declaration of
Independence seemed to have taken a passive role. It argued that King George and the British
were wronging them and that America was at their last straw. America was being oppressed and
grew tired of it. The Declaration stated that the British were infringing on their God given rights
as humans, imposing taxes without consent, denying fair trials, as well as many other grievances
that attacked the American colonies. Therefore, with their back against the wall they had to
separate themselves from the British and establish their own government or live their lives in
fear forever. In contrast, The French s Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen took
on a more active role. The French people, also known as the National Assembly, banded together
and came up with a list of seventeen laws that they felt gave power to the people over those of
nobility. They felt that the king and the noble s lack of concern or ignorance of the rights of man
was the cause of such a corrupted government, and that gave them a justified reason for revolt. The
Declaration of the Rights of Man shows more comparison to America s Constitution or Bill of
Rights than to the Declaration of Independence. It stated the rights they were warranted and an
obligation for the government to

The Wars of Religion Essay
Politics and religion in the world of today aren t subjects that generally go hand in hand in our
own society. This was not always the case however; in Europe the two were synonymous up until
relatively recently, (recently meant in the loosest sense of the word,) and are still closely tied in
foreign parts of the world, the most obvious example being the Middle East. The duos intimate
relationship was exemplified during the late sixteenth century, extending into the seventeenth
century, during a series of wars which would later on come to be called the wars of religion. But
is this title completely appropriate? For wars claiming to be centered on religion, they seem to
carry an awfully heavy load of political baggage. In fact, one... Show more content on

She simply made alliances with the less threatening of the enemies (the Huguenots, and the Guises)
whenever it suited her, disregarding her Catholic religion at times to escape a heavily Guise
influenced monarchy, as well as risking the aforementioned when the protestants seemed to be
gaining major influence. These alliances were purely political, and were angled towards getting rid
of the largest threat of the moment. Originally, honoring her alliances with the Huguenots,
Catherine enacted the Edict of January which allowed the Huguenots to worship in private outside
of towns. This; however, was quickly disregarded when the Duke of Guise slaughtered a
congregation of worshiping Calvinists in a permitted area. This was brick that broke the camel s
back, marking the official start of the French War of Religion. Subsequently, the bloodiest and most
violent of conflicts followed as well as the assassination of the duke of Guise, paving the way for the
Peace of Saint Germain en Laye and ending the brutal fighting. Following these events, the
Huguenots began to steadily gain influence, entertaining the notice of Catherine. Unhappy about
the situation, Catherine set to convincing her son, Charles, that the Huguenots were planning a
coup. Fearful of losing the crown, Catherine, with the help of the Guises, hastily ordered the Saint
Bartholomew s Day Massacre, causing the death of twenty thousand Protestants

Shostakovich Essay
The symphony is a large and complex musical piece that has the potential to express a wide breadth
of experiences and emotions. While the symphony was developed intensely in the eighteenth
century in Vienna, the tradition of symphony has long since spread to other countries, providing the
composers of different nationalities the opportunity to introduce their own colors into the symphony
. Consequently, as different countries develop musical characteristics in the symphony to create
their own symphonic tradition, these symphonies can be seen as an expression of national identity.
Whether voluntarily or involuntarily, the circumstances surrounding the works and the composers
intentions for their work have a profound impact on the relationship between a symphony and the
national identity it expresses. Some symphonic composers, limited by the rules set forth by the
government, were forced to compose symphonies that strongly expressed the identity of a nation.
An example of such a composer is Dmitri Shostakovich. A Russian composer in a time when the
Soviet Union controlled all aspects of life, as well as music, Shostakovich was once criticized for
some of his works for not adhering to the expectations of the government. Shostakovich s opera The
Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk District and his ballet The Limpid Stream were both denounced, which
placed great pressure on Shostakovich because such denunciation could lead to violent
consequences (Taruskin 22). As a result, his Fifth

Mirror Therapy Research Paper
LOWER EXTREMITY MIRROR THEARPY IN STROKE PATIENTS WITH NEGLECT
Alli McCarthy
PT 640 Research Proposal
Spring Semester 2015
Research Question: Can mirror therapy performed on the upper and lower extremity of stroke
patients improve unilateral visual neglect more than mirror therapy exclusively performed on the
upper extremity?
Abstract
Background and Purpose. Stroke patients with visual neglect can be treated with mirror therapy to
improve neglect and function. Previous studies have shown improvement of neglect and function in
stroke patients who are given mirror therapy on the upper extremity only. This research will exam
whether mirror therapy of both the upper and lower extremity can show greater improvement than
if mirror therapy is performed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A pilot study will be performed since no current research looking at the effect of mirror therapy
performed on stroke patients with neglect with primary outcome measures of SCT and LBT
have provided exact values of means with standard deviations between the groups. An effect size
of .50 will be used based on the study performed by Pandian et al. which looked at the effect of
mirror therapy performed on stroke patients with neglect and used similar primary outcome
measures as this study (Pandian) Therefore, with an effect size of .5, a sample size of 64
participants in each group will be needed. However, it is necessary to account for a predicted
attrition rate when recruiting participants. Based on the 12% attrition rate seen in the study
performed by Pandian et al., this study will start with an additional 8 participants per group with
the hope of maintaining 80% power and reducing the risk of a type II error. (Pandian) Therefore,
this study will begin with 72 participants in each group. An intention to treat analysis will be
performed in order to account for subjects who drop out of the study. A Bonferroni adjustment will
be made in order to maintain an overall О±2 = 0.05 to protect against type 1

Marketing Analysis of Jetstar and Virgin Blue Airlines Essay
Executive Summary
This research report provides an analysis of two popular airlines in Australia; Jetstar and Virgin
Blue, both whom are competing in the airline business. Jetstar and Virgin Blue can both compete
and be highly profitable within the business, leisure and family market but however, it will
ultimately be the service companies, and their associated marketing strategies and techniques which,
will establish the difference between the market leader and the market loser . This analysis will
detail potential solutions to a number of major strategic issues confronting the companies to
maintain its position and protect its profitability in its core domestic market.

1.2 Service recovery and customer handling
Service recovery and handling customer complaints is very important in the airline industry and
leads to customer satisfaction and loyalty. In the past, Jetstar in particular have had to put their
service recovery plans into action. For example, on the 16th of April 2007, a Jetstar flight was
cancelled with 300 Australian customers being stranded in the airport for 48 hours. Although
the article doesn t specify how Jetstar used service recovery whilst the customer were stranded,
it does state that Jetstar personally called each passenger to apologise, as well as telling them
they would receive another apology in writing and a $500 travel voucher with the possibility of
them being able to travel business class next time (Murphy, 2007). Although the compensation is
resonable, Jetstar should have apologised face to face whilst the customers were stranded in the
airport in order for the service recovery to be more successful. According to Lovelock et al, if the
response time for compliant handling is done immediately, 56% of those customers that are
involved will be satisfied (2004). It has also been discovered that 85% of the time, a customer
whom had a very serious complaint can be turned into a loyal customer, so long as the handling of
the complaint

Your Body is trying to Destroy You! Genetic Mapping Can...
Cancer is probably one of the most dreaded words in the English language. It is a disease where
cells becomes abnormal and start to divide uncontrollably and from tumors. A frightening thing to
consider is that some forms of cancer do not show side effects until the advanced stages. When the
disease is severe, the treatment is also severe and sometimes chemotherapy and radiation do not
work. However, there is hope for a better system of cancertreatment that has shown to have a
higher chance of succeeding provided by genetic mapping. Now, there is an option to have tumors
genetically mapped so that cancer treatments can be more personalized. Also, because of genetic

This has directly lead to the cost of genome sequencing to sharp decline. Before the project the
cost to map out a human genome was one billion dollars, after the project was completed it had to
decline to ten to 50 million dollars. Now, ten years after the completion of the Human Genome
Project the cost to map out a human genome is only three to five thousand dollars. ( Quantitative
Advances Since the Human Genome Project (HGP) ) This number is predicted to keep declining
as well, in part because of company competition and the increase popularity of genetic mapping.
Another reason is because the National Human Genome Research Institute has new goals to
expand the use of genetic mapping which includes finding ways to lower the cost of genome
sequencing to less than a thousand dollars. It would be a huge feat but a goal the Institute could
manage to realize in the next ten years. ( Decade of Genomics NHGRI Celebrates 10th Anniversary
)
There was a little unforeseen additional to the National Institutes of Health, which is the Cancer
Genome Atlas. The whole goal of this program is to use genetic mapping to its full potential when
it comes to cancer research, diagnosis, treatment and prevention. The National Cancer Institute
parented with the National Human Genome Research Institute, to conduct a wide spread, large
scale genome sequencing on over twenty different types of cancer.

Essay on The Main Obstacles to Peace
The Main Obstacles to Peace There has been violence in the Middle East for the past 60 years,
and there still seems to be no hope of a compromise between the Palestinians and the Israelis. In
order for a peace settlement to work, both sides must agree to it, and must overcome the four main
barriers which stand in the way. They must reach a compromise over the city of Jerusalem,
showing it should be controlled by both peoples because of the joint history between them, the
attitudes and expectations should try to be fulfilled, which would destroy the extremist movements
on both sides of the conflict, but more importantly, it has to see a solution for the refugee crisis in
this area of the world,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Jews recently have begun settlement building in the West Bank, encouraged by Ariel
Sharon, (he was the housing minister in the 1970 s but now the Prime Minister). Today around
400,000 Israelis live illegally on the Palestinian lands, despite Resolution 242 passed 30 years
ago making the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza strip illegal. This is why most terrorism
happens in these areas, in order to scare the Israelis into defeat. A Recent example of this was in
October 2003 when the Israelis launched a tender for the construction of 550 new homes in the
Jewish section of the West Bank there was much protest from the moderate Palestinians but very
soon there was a huge increase in the violence on the West Bank. Therefore, since any
compromise involves one side giving up or not getting enough of the land they both see as
rightfully belonging entirely to them, any peace deal will inevitably leave both the Israelis and the
Palestinians unhappy. The Second barriers to peace are the extremists on both sides in this
conflict. These people want 100% of the land and wouldn t be happy with anything less than the
whole of Palestine to themselves. Both the Palestinian and Israeli Prime Ministers have hoped that
with this new Road Map to Peace would satisfy the

The Values Of Parenting And Child Discipline
Parenting and Child Discipline
For many years, discipline was and still is a grey line. By 2000, Studies were showing major
associations between physical punishment and mental health, physical injury, parent child
relationships and family violence in adulthood. This led many countries to take action against
violent punishments. Therefore, countries banned domestic violence after they decided that gentle
discipline is the best method to raise a kid. On the other hand, many parents are reluctant to leave
their physical ways of discipline. These techniques come from cultural, and religious beliefs that
have been rooted in the parents. The parents continue to use violence as a way to discipline their
kids, claiming that it is more efficient than gentle and soft methods of discipline.
To determine the weight of each side s argument, This issue must be passed through the laws of
ethics and morality. Ignoring the risks of violence that parenting can lead to, this method in the
viewpoint of many is considered to be more efficient and has faster results. Physical punishments
are deemed to be a firm way to show kids that they re disobediences are not tolerated. This is
believed to satisfy the parents desire for power by rooting a sense fear of the parents authority
within the children. In many religions such as Islam hitting a child is acceptable within limits.
These limits protect the child s physical and mental safety, yet are still effective to teach the child a

John Henry Livingston Influence On Religion
Besides being known as the Father of the Reformed Church in America, the resolver of the Coetus
vs. Conferentie dispute, the instituter of the Union of Articles to provide education for colonial
clergy, and the founder of New Brunswick Theological Seminary, John Henry Livingston is also
known as the father of the modern missionary movement (By Grace Alone, 81). Livingston helped a
young RCA denomination establish itself and wade through some challenging theological positions
(The Dutch Reformed Church in the American Colonies, 207 209). During Livingston s time, it
was the middle of the Second Great Awakening and an evangelical pietism was filling the churches

Being far more consistent than Frelinghuysen, Livingston espoused millennial views which echo
a hope that Christians can bring the return of Christ before the year 2000 (A People in Mission,

Babylon and the apocalyptic doom that could follow. By proselytizing to the world the good news
of the Gospel, this apocalypticism can be avoided. Livingston believed that once the entire globe
heard the Gospel, the church would enter into the millennial reign (Word and World, 18).
Livingston, in his sermon, goes so far as to say that it is the Christian s duty to live out the Great
Commission to foreign lands. But the millennial reign will come about if the church is not being
pious; therefore, the church must stress moral and social order essential piety so that Jesus will
return (Word and World, 112 113). Livingston is known for believing America to be a City on a

The Importance Of Proper Representation Of Data
Abstract This paper discusses the importance of proper representation of data that is mined from
social media. The need for data mining and its various advantages are also discussed. The standard
tasks involved in data mining are explained. The discussion illuminates the various techniques that
can be used for representing the data (Textual representation, Tables, Graphs, Infographic). Draws
attention to the useful applications of data miningin varying degrees and illustrates the benefit of
this powerful technology. Suggests use of data visualization tools like Tableau, Qlikview to
evaluate, analyze and identify important parameters to gain deeper insights from the plethora of
data mined from social media.
Introduction
The widespread use of social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn have
been generating large amounts of data which are interchangeably known as social data. This data is
usually user generated, inconsistent, and incomplete and have geo information. This data can be
used by researchers or companies to extract meaningful information about human behavior, product
consumption, trends in markets, etc. Extraction and study of this data for useful purposes is called
data mining of social media. Since the number of techniques used to mine data are increasing
rapidly with time, it has become imperative to represent the data in a form which can be easily
understood. Data mining may consist of the following stages. First, data is extracted,

The Impacts Of Thomas Jefferson And Alexander Hamilton
Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton both had significant impacts on the U.S. government,
but also had countless differences throughout their lives. Jefferson originated from one of the most
prominent families in Virginia with proper education at a young age, while Hamilton grew up in
the slums of St. Croix and received little formal education. As they entered the political world, they
sought plans to improve/make america great but their ideas clearly contradicted against one another.
Between the two Founding Fathers, I find Alexander Hamilton to be more trustworthy because he
constructed a stable foundation for America s economics and government that continues to be used
till this day. Thomas Jeffersonwas born into a notable family on April 13, 1743, in Shadwell,
Virginia. His mother, Jane Randolph Jefferson, was a member of the proud Randolph clan, a
family claiming descent from English and Scottish royalty. His father, Peter Jefferson, was a
successful farmer as well as a skilled surveyor and cartographer ( Thomas Jefferson
Biography.com ) Jefferson spent majority of his free time practicing violin, roaming the wood and
studying his books on a plantation in Virginia. At age nine, Jefferson had begun his formal studies,
boarding with a minister teacher, where he continued until age sixteen. Unlike Jefferson, Alexander
Hamilton was born on January 11, 1755 (or 1757) into a poor and unprivileged family in
Charlestown, Nevis. His mother was Rachel Fawcett Lavien

Romeo Juliet ВЃВЁ Balcony Scene Character Comparison
Balcony Scene (Act 2, Scene 1) in Romeo and Juliet is almost certainly the most famous scene
throughout the world. The prevalent reason for it being famous is that this scene is the scene
where the two lovers come together, took an oath for their love and plan to marry. This scene
foreshadows the next scene, their marriage, which is tremendously important for the rest of the
play. In my opinion, there is one more reason for ВЃgBalcony SceneВЃh to be famous. In this
scene, Shakespeare reveals the characteristics of the protagonists, Romeo and Juliet, in their

American Revolution Women s Rights Dbq
The American Revolution was an important sequence of events over a period of time that has
affected early American society up to today s modern society. It all started with the Revolutionary
War, which led to the Declaration of Independence from Britain, and in turn created a reason for
America to write the Constitution and develop their own government. Ideas of equality became a
major point of the Revolution, and although it wasn t very quick to happen, ideas eventually spread
throughout the colonies, giving the equality that poor to middle classes, African American slaves,
and women deserved. After the Revolutionary War, in which American was fighting for
independence from Britain, the most important right that was gained was the right... Show more

The people who weren t receiving the rights and liberties they deserved were inspired to fight for
them by the creation of these two documents. The discernment of inequality became a consequence
when wealthy, white men were believed to be superior to other genders and races, especially of
lower class. Even though some may reason that the Revolution brought forth little to no change, the
ideas Revolution gave the diverse groups justification to fight for their equality among the superior
higher classes. Poor to middle class, African American slaves, and women were finally given the
right ideas to protect their rights adequately. The Revolution became the period of accommodation

Their Eyes Were Watching God Identity Analysis
What is identity? A normal person would think that it s simply defined as who we are. However,
there are many definitions of identity, as it can mean differently for others. Identity is what
makes us unique from one another because there is no one else like us. Since our surroundings,
such as the people we meet and places we go to, possess a role into shaping who we are, we are
constantly changing. As we grow up and become curious, we experiences many things and start to
see different sides of ourselves. We start to question our individuality, to the point where we may
struggle with whom we really are. Similar to Janie Crawford in the novel Their Eyes Were
Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, Janie struggles with identity. Throughout... Show more

There are many different factors that influence our identity, such as our family, relationships,
society, etc. Family plays a significant role into shaping our identity because they can influence our
attitudes, beliefs, and values. Some may grow up having the same values as their parents because it
s what they are taught and they retain those values as they enter adulthood. They may be modified
along the way, but it s not completely gone. Although family can help prevent us from committing
poor choices through guidance, they can also hinder our ability to accomplish what we desire. In
Janie s case, Nanny plays a significant part into shaping her identity. Since Janie and Nanny had
only each other left, Nanny became very protective of Janie. In order for Janie to avoid
experiencing the tragedy both her mother and grandmother went through, which was being raped
and forced into a relationship, she wanted the absolute best for Janie. As a former slave, the
grandmother, Nanny, is haunted by the compensatory dream of making her first daughter, and then
her granddaughter, something other than the mule of the world, customary fate of the black

You Can Not Go Through Life Without Having A List Of Rules
You can not go through life without having a list of rules. I hope to grow up and become a parent
myself and one thing that I hope to teach my children one day is that they need to work their
hardest until they succeed and that they need to learn from their failures. One quote that I really
like is from Thomas Edisonwho said, I have not failed, I have just found 10,000 ways not to build
a lightbulb. What I take from this quote is that life doesn t end after you fail, you needto take that
failure and expound on it and learn from it. I live by a lot of rules, I believe obeying rules is hard
work but if I obey them I will get a lot of things in return and that s what I hope my kids take away
from life and my rules, is that if you do something hard you ll get something great in return.
In my freshman year I was nominated to be the team captain of my baseball team and that night
I was really nervous because I didn t think I was the right person for the job because I am a quiet
kid and I just go to baseball to do two things, win and get better. I also get angry at people when
they mess up but I do usually keep it to myself. I was also really nervous when I was up to hit
because I didn t want to get hit by the ball. So I didn t really know how to be a team leader. That
night I was sitting around table eating dinner when I started talking about what I should do. My

The phenotypic nature of SMA also relates to the body weight of the mice as it can cause
disruption to the ability to eat due to muscle weakness in the throat. We will measure the body
weight of the mice throughout the first 42 days of their development to determine their health. In
mice that have had their SMN1 gene returned to normal by CRISPR Cas9, their weight should
follow the blue trend indicated in Figure 6. However, if the mice have a significantly lower body
weight, shown in orange in Figure 6, it may suggest the mice still have a form of SMA.

Essay On Tommy And Mr. Atkins
A British soldier is expected to stand firm, with a non wavering heart as the enemy approaches.
They are to protect the Queen and her beliefs at all costs. A gentleman and a fighter, that is a
soldier of the Queen s army. They expect to return home to the people of the United Kingdom s
praise and respect after their conquests, however they were met with mistreatment and sometimes
scorn during the year of 1892. On the surface, Tommy is a representation of the juxtaposition of
how war is seen by those that are being protected, but this creative piece is an example of what it
is like when the people of a country respect the toils of war but not the soldier. Kipling
accomplishes this by changing what could be good English to bad English so... Show more content

History, Family Structure, And Culture Essay
Belize has been historically known for its tourism for several of years. This first started dating
back about 2000 years ago when the Ancient Mayans were introduced. We have learned so much
about their culture and history thanks to years of research and the help of archaeologists
excavating several Mayan ruins in Belize. Although the number of Mayans still alive today has
greatly reduced they still had a major impact to our culture as shown through the many challenges
they had to overcome and the discoveries that they made. Some of the topics that will be
addressed will be geography, history, family structure, and culture. The Mayans are known for
their diversity as they are divided into three different regions; the northern highlands, the central
lowlands, and the southern highlands. The overall name for this was called Mesoamerica which
spreads across five different countries. These countries were Belize, Honduras, Guatemala,
Mexico, and El Salvador. There are different groups that make up the Mayans. According to
Lafond (1996), Some of the largest Maya groups are found in Mexico, the most important of these
being the Yucatects, the Tzotzil, and the Tzeltal. Specifically, in Belize, they are comprised of three
Mayans groups; the Kekchi Maya, the Yucatec Maya, and the Mopan Mayans. The Kekchi Mayans
immigrated from San Pedro in Guatemala then to Belize where they occupied eight villages,
specifically in the Toledo district. The Yucatects migrated from South Mexico and

Economic Inequality Within The Global Economy
Economic inequality can be defined by the unequal access to economic resources, in the form of
opportunities, wealth, capital, land, etc., which determine the individual s or the group s level of
power. Generally speaking, individuals and groups with high access to resources have high levels of
vertical and horizontal power, which in it turn generate more access to resources and power. The
unequal access to economic resources is institutionalized within a society. Thus, economic
inequality has far reaching effects and manifestations in other social and political institutions. In
addition, with increasing role of global economyon national economies, and the increasing
inequality in the global market, which is reflecting on increasing inequality in it turn increases
inequality within nations. Thus, the interest among political economists has increased in an effort
to understand stratification and to create policies which aim to elevate economic inequality
globally and nationally.
I will argue that the capitalist economic system is inherently unequal. Farther more, it thrives on
creating highly level of economic inequality, where resources and capital is concentrated in the
hands of the economic elite, while the rest of the population service to provide cheap labor
(specialized on non specialized) which increase economic, social, and political inequality in a
society. For that reason, I don t believe that economic policies can end inequality globally or

Delinquency Labels
Delinquency labels relates to economic statuses, racial differences and gender inequality. While
gender inequality highlights the differences in the prestige, power and status of men and women in
societies, they have an effect on crime patterns. Differences in gender significantly impact on
treatment of children by the juvenile system (Siegel Welsh, 2014). Although males and females

Analysis Of Three Cups Of Tea
Three Cups of Tea by David Oliver Relin and Greg Mortenson tells a story that takes the reader
along an adventure, up mountains, and across the world. Mortenson is a mountaineer that ends
up in Korphe, Pakistan after he fails to climb K2. It is here where he sees poverty unlike
anywhere he has yet to be. Mortenson, struck by shock, promises to come back to the small
village and build a school in hopes of turning the place around. He ends up raising enough money
to fulfil his promise, being promoted to the director of the Central Asia Institute which build
schools across the country, and begins to focus more on girls education. Throughout the novel, the
overall tone was direct and straightforward, and it is essentially journalistic due to the third person
point of view and changing narration. Mortenson discovers a purpose from the result of being lost
in a quest to fulfil his duty of director and the continuation of being a humanitarian in these
developing countries which is one of the author s purposes of writing this book. In Three Cups of
Tea, there are many points in time when Mortenson thinks he has gone in the wrong direction, but
ironically ends up right where he needs to be after all which ends up being the main theme of the
book: making the best out of a bad situation.
The theme is one that many people should be able to relate to: anyone can turn a bad situation into
a good one. For instance, when Mortenson could not reach the peak of K2, he is disappointed,

Marx Vs Freud
Marx and Freud are two thinkers of roughly the same time period, mostly the 19th century, into the
20th for Freud. Comparing and contrasting their theories provides for a deeper understanding of
both of their philosophies. Marx s theory of human nature stresses the idea that people are
inherently social. He saw that most of an individual s behavior is dependent on the actions of
others, and noted that even the most mundane aspects of human existence are socially learned.
Additionally, he believed that a person s society determines their behavior, noting differences
among cultures and the fact that there is no one, unified way of thinking that all cultures subscribe
to. This ties in well with his materialist theory of history, which places tremendous... Show more

Green Mountain Coffee Roasters By David Einhorn
Executive Summary
Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR), a Vermont based coffee roaster and distributor has been
under fire publicly by David Einhorn, founder and fund manager of New York hedge fund company
Greenlight Capital. Mr. Einhorn has suggested that Green Mountain Coffee Roasters is over valued
based on their unscrupulous accounting and reporting principles. Despite impending expiring
patents, Mr. Einhorn has identified that GMRC is in violation of US GAAP standards.
Overstatement of inventory, overstatement of income, inaccurate inventory costs and failure to
reverse accruals to the customer incentive program has been alleged against GMRC, thus inflating
GMRC s overall value. As a result of Mr. Einhorn s whistleblowing, GMRC s stock price has fallen
including lost market value. In my opinion, Mr. Einhorn was correct in his allegations against
GMRC. To gain consumer and market confidence, GMRC must follow GAAP standards, and
ensure preventive mechanisms are in place in order to ensure public mistrust is mitigated that is
inclusive to ethical, transparent reporting.

Point Of View In Cathedral By Raymond Carver
The different uses of point of view in a short story can influence how the reader interprets the text.
For example, the short story Cathedral incorporates the use of first person. First person point of
view is when a narrator conveys an experience from their own perspective. By choosing to use first
person narrative, the author allows the reader to gain a concise understanding of how the narratoris
thinking and feeling. First person narrative is often used because it allows the reader to better
understand the context of the text and the story becomes more intimate for the reader. On the other
hand, the short story, The Lady with the Dog integrates the use of third person limited narrative.

In the beginning of the story, we learn that Gurov has many affairs because of his troubled
marriage. As the plot develops, Gurov meets a young and naive woman named Anna while
vacationing in Yalta. Anna and Gurov have an affair together, which leads to Gurov becoming
emotionally invested with her. The story is told through Gurov and his emotional instability is
especially accentuated. But more than a month passed, real winter had come, and everything was
still clear in his memory as though he had parted with Anna Sergeyeva only the day before. And his
memories glowed more and more vividly (Chekhov 272). Once Gurov and Anna part, he finds it
difficult to move on from her. The third person narrative allows the audience to see the turmoil in
this affair through the perspective of Gurov. Although Anna plays an important role in the
development of this story, we do not fully understand her perspective of the affair. The audience is
however, able to interpret that Anna is feeling guilty from her affair. Overall, despite the fact that
we can understand Gurov s emotional attachment to Anna, it is difficult for the reader to understand
how Anna is thinking and feeling. By using third person narrative, the narrator provides the
audience with a look into the

The Strengths and Weaknesses of Dualism
Dualism is the belief that reality consists of two different, separate substances: that of the mental
and that of the physical. In philosophy of mind, the belief that the mental and physical are deeply
different in kind: thus the mental is at least not identical with the physical. It directly opposes
materialism, as dualism dictates that the mind is unidentifiable to the body, as opposed to stating
that the mind and body exist as one. The concept of dualism is not only fundamental in philosophy,
but also affects our thoughts on science, religion and psychology: for example, if a convincing
rejection of dualism can be formulated, the materialist approach of modern science will be
vindicated. If, conversely, dualism can be convincingly... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Aquinas agreed with the Artistotlean notion that when the soul entered the body it animated it
and gave it life; calling it anima. Moreover according to Aquinas, the soul operates independently
of the body and it cannot decay; for only things that can break into parts can decay, Thus,
following Aquinas argument, the soul is able to survive death. He also said that through the link
with a particular human body, each soul becomes individual. So, even when a body dies, the
soul that departs retains the individual identity of the body to which it was attached. Despite this
earlier work, there was still no explanation of how the soul and body worked together, if at all.
This was until Descartes (1596 1650) who provided the fundamental writings on dualism with his
work Meditiations on First Philosophy. Indeed, he is considered the father of modern philosophy
and his Meditations lead to the school of dualistic ontology known as Cartesian Interactionist
Dualism, which still inspires much thought and extension by modern philosophers today.
Descartes defined the mind as all the feelings and sensations that he could describe, but which he
could not locate physically . He then furthered this by saying that the mind is everything that is
non physical. Then without doubt I exist also if he deceives me, and let him deceive me as much
as he will, he can never cause me to be nothing so long as I think I am something... it might

For example Japan relates on debt ratio them more U.S. firms. One of the explanations for different
financial structures is a different tax regime. For example, if interest income were taxes at higher
rate, a preference for debt financing over equity financing would be expected. However, according
to the empirical research, country differences in financial structure do not seem related to any
systematic to country difference in tax structure. Another explanation is that these country
differences may reflect cultural norms, cultural influences not yet been explained.
Principle behind global money management is that that firms must use the firm s cash recourses in
the most efficient way and work on minimization cash balances and reducing transactional costs.
Firms must hold certain cash balances that will cover payments of accounts payables and expected
demand on cash. The rest of the cash assets are usually reinvested on in money markets accounts
and firms earn interest on them. However, firms must have flexible accounts so it can withdraw all
cash freely. Such accounts usually have low interest rates and if it doesn t, firm can suffers from
financial penalties. That is the dilemma many firms are facing and that is why firms are minimizing
cash balances, so it can earn interest in high rated market account.
Another way to reduce costs of doing business internationally is to reduce transaction costs.
Transaction cost is the cost of exchange, it is

Rhetorical Analysis Of President Joe Biden s Unity Through...
Unity Through Equality
In late June of 2016, Vice President Joe Biden had an official visit to his ancestral country,
Ireland. Biden planned his five day visit to meet with Prime Minister Enda Kenny to discuss Irish
American relations, and to address the Irish people about the value of global inclusiveness.
Throughout his speech, Biden uses different rhetorical strategies that aim to unify the Irish and
American people. Biden s arrival to Ireland occurs at a time when immigration is heavily debated,
and right before the world s largest pride parade in Dublin. Strategically, his words express the
similarities between Ireland and America, by connecting the two nations on one shared value of
equality. Biden uses equality as the foundation of a shared sense of resilience that is evidenced in
Irish and American past, present, and future.
Biden argues that both Ireland and America hold the same values at heart when comparing the
Declaration of Independence and the 1916 Proclamation. He states that the phrase We hold these
truths to be self evident that all men are created equal , and the 1916 Proclamation s, all of the
children of the nation equally , are notions founded in equal rights, equal opportunity, and religious
and civil liberties for everyone. Biden mentions that these terms are grounded, and are not empty
words on a page. He is trying to explain the depth of their meaning by noting that they are the

WORLDCOM SCANDAL INVESTIGATION RESULTS
Evidence shows that the accounting fraud was discovered as early as June 2001, when several
former employees gave statements alleging instances of hiding bad debt, understating costs, and
backdating contracts. However, WorldCom s board of directors did not investigate these claims.
Although employees and investors look for individual culpability, WorldCom s organizational

economy in the next decade. The reasons for this catastrophic event in American 20th century
history are numerous, and in his book, The Great Crash, John Kenneth Galbraith covers the period
and events which lead up to the downward spiral in the fall of 1929 and the people behind the
scenes on Wall Street who helped this fire spread. One... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As explained in the book, holding companies controlled large proportions of such facets of the
economy as railroads, utilities and the entertainment businesses. This brought on the constant
danger of devastation by reverse leverage. This meant that money made by these operations was
used to pay interest on the bonds of the holding companies. Thus, when there was a break in the
money coming in, companies could not make payments and were forced into bankruptcy, which
trickled down the ladder. The third reason given was the bad banking structure which was in
place in the 20 s and into the 30 s. Banks at this time were run individually, thus, when a bank
failed or went belly up because of aggregate deposits, it started a domino effect. In 1929 alone,
346 banks closed their doors, leaving people out in the cold, with no money, money which they had
trusted in the hands of these banks. This of course left the people with a bad taste in their mouths,
and caused them to stop putting money in banks, relying instead on the bottom side of their
mattresses. The bad running of banks ties into corruption also. The men who ran banks, men like
Charles E. Mitchell, were more interested in keeping the stock market boom going rather then the
health of the banks which they ran. These men kept interest rates low and gave bad loans to
people who mostly had no hope of ever paying back. The fourth reason stated was the dubious state
of the foreign balance. During the 20 s, America

Ultrasound Therapeutic Effect
Piezoelectric effect was discovered by Currie brothers in 1880. Further, in 1927, Loomis, wood
studied the ultrasound therapeutic ability. In 1940, Ludwig and Struthers published first research
paper on ultrasound. It was the first pulse echo mode ultrasound for the detection of gallstones in
animal tissues. Howry and Bliss, in 1950 were succeeded in analyzing and depicting the anatomic
details of an organ in water bath using B mode technology. Ultrasound (US) is most widely used
diagnostic modality which is cheap as compared to other imaging modalities. Some of its
advantages include non ionizing radiations, real time data availability, large scalable imaging
depth, portability and cost effectiveness. A highly advanced ultrasound came to a stagnant phase
when its hardware was improved along with its software and algorithms. So, the only place to
expand the scope was imaging at cellular and molecular scale. Additionally, providing diagnostic
information beyond that of conventional sonography, and usage of contrast agents. To address the
cellular and molecular scale, the idea was to spatially localize the contrast between diseased and the
health tissue. It is realized that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It requires an internal or external energy source to excite the tissue. Further, it measure the motion
of the tissue induced by the energy. Now, a qualitative or quantitative analysis of tissue elastic
properties is measured form the displacement of tissue. An US can be used to measure
elastography, because it has fast imaging capabilities and also a high spatial resolution. Thyroid
cancer can be visualized using shear elastography. A benign thyroid nodule shows less stiffness,
while a malignant nodule shows maximum stiffness. Consequently, a stiffness parameter could help
us conclude a type of cancer, without autopsy. To sum up, if US along with other technique could

Picked to Work on A Secret Project
Nicholas Boyster was one of eight scientists the government had handpicked to work on their
newest secret project. Only being in his early twenties, Boyster was practically a child compared
to the other scientists, none of them younger then forty. Boyster s young age was not the only
thing the other scientists disliked about him, just the most official one. His general appearance
fell far short of meeting their approval, too. Boyster s dark hair hung down to his shoulders,
often looking as if it had never seen a brush before. In the eyes of the others only short, neat hair
befitted a person of their standing. After all, only the best were handpicked for government
projects. Last but not least were Boyster s clothes, he wore faded jeans and t shirts instead of the
suit pants and dress shirts the others donned every day. The dislike was definitely mutual though.
Boyster thought all the other scientists were stuffy old geezers, who had long lost the love for the
job and were now just going through the motions. And his immediate boss was the worst of all.
Mr. Bright was very set in his ways, never budging even an inch. The other scientists opinions and
ideas didn t matter at all; his word was law. On their first day of work together he had set up a
strict set of rules he expected everyone to adhere to. It had taken Boyster a total of five minutes to
break the first one: /Never contradict me/ Boyster had just meant to tell Mr. Bright that the little
glass jars would not be able

Fall Of France 1940-1940 Research Paper
The fall of France in 1940 was inevitable. During the course of World War 1, France was hit with
many huge blows which brings up the question if the fall of France could or could not be
prevented. For instance, Germany invaded them and they faced several casualties from the start
to 1940. Germany s attack on the Ardenne Forest severely weakened France. Hitler making his
troops go to Durik where the French were also weakened France. The fall of France was inevitable
because of the German strength compared to France, change in regime in France, and French
problem from 1939 1940.

The French government, in office since 21 March 1940, had been ousted on 16 June 1940 in a
cabinet crisis at Bordeaux (The Fall of France, 1940) . This crisis happened because of the
onrushing Germans. Marshal Philippe PГ©tain came to power because of his anti democratic
agenda and a readiness to submit to the German conquest (The Fall of France, 1940). He was
basically a puppet for Germany so that they didn t have to worry about France overthrowing them.
He and his supporters accepted the Armistice terms proposed by Germany. There, on 10 July
1940, with just 81 dissidents, they voted liberated forces to PГ©tain, who framed another, hostile
to law based, against Semitic and misanthropic administration, the French State , its authorities
and pastors introduced in the inns of Vichy. It was the fall of the Third Republic and the begin of
France s dull trip down what PГ©tain called the way of coordinated effort with Hitler (The Fall of
France, 1940). This was at smart move for Germany because if they pick someone who agrees with
Germany, then the France would never returned to it usual strength, and would be blinded on how
sick Germany is because of the president s doing. The German influence in politics contributed to
the fall of the France that prevented them from getting

Final Lab Report
Abstract
The experiments conducted for this lab report focused on water contamination and filtration.
Experiment 1 was effects of groundwater contamination. Oil, vinegar, and laundry detergent were
added to clean water with no means of filtration. The clean water was found to be contaminated. A
filtration system consisting of cheesecloth and 60 ml of soil was created and the contaminated
samples were filtered through it. The soil and cheese cloth did not affectively filter the
contaminants. Experiment 2 focused on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Beakers 5 8 were set aside for later use. I then recorded by observation of beaker 1 in Table 1 on
the Lab Reporting Form; this included smell, color, etc. 10 mL of vegetable oil was added to
beaker 2, 10 mL of vinegar to beaker 3, and 10 mL of liquid laundry detergent to beaker 4. Each
beaker was mixed thoroughly with a wooden stir stick. My observations such as color and smell
were annotated in Table 1 on the Lab Reporting Form. Next, I cut the cheesecloth into five
different pieces. I took one piece of cheesecloth and folded it so it was 4 layers thick. I then
placed it into the funnel. 60 mL of soil was measured out using the 100 mL beaker and placed
into the cheesecloth lined funnel. The funnel was then put inside beaker 5. The contents of
beaker 1 (water) were poured through the funnel and let filter for 1 minute into beaker 5. My
observations were recorded on Table 1 on the Lab Reporting Form. I repeated the process of
creating a filter of cheesecloth and soil and filtered the contents of beaker 2 (vegetable oil) into
beaker 6, beaker 3 (vinegar) to beaker 7, and beaker 4 (detergent) to beaker 8. All observations were
recorded on Table 1. Experiment 2: Water Treatment

Matsuo Basho Essay
I decided to choose Matsuo Basho and Kobayashi poetry for the early modern age period. I chose
Masoka Shiki poetry for the modern age period. The early modern age poems I chose were
heavily based on nature and human interaction with the use of some nature. The modern age
poems I chose both by Shiki there was a shift from the early modern age because of the different
influences and of course time period. However, all of the poems I still could connect to whether it
was about nature, real life human interaction, and experiences.
Basho and Issa poetry is a part of the early modern age period. At this time Japan was going
through a period of isolation and was living in feudalistic system. Basho was able to exemplary
given the cultural influences during this period because he expressed everyday life. He was able
to express everyday life in a tone that could be reciprocated. The dominant themes ... Show more

However, both Issa and Basho seem to create works based on their observations where you notice
the imagery. Issa says, Snow starts melting , the reader can visualize the snow. During Issa s
journey he notices that as the snow melts the village is crowded with children which gives me the
impression of his recognition of the behavior of human and in the poem I chose, the children.
Masaoka Shiki s dominant theme was expressing modern life and its complexities. The time
period of social development and western culture where he wrote on reform. Shiki says, I keep on
working, and keep on working but life still continues to have its struggles though working his
supposed to aid a better life. This represents the complexities during this time period.
Though there is a difference in time periods, the themes intertwine in some way; though the
influences of the poets work may differ. As I read all of the poems I chose, I still feel some kind
of relationship because the themes in both the early modern age and the modern age are

Electrochemical Gradient
#1) What is an electrochemical gradient, and why is it so important when discussing the movement
of ions across cell membranes? The establishment of electrochemical gradient is one of the driving
forces for ion movement across the cell membrane. Cells are usually negative and surrounded by
positively charged extracellular fluids. All transport processes across cells impact the chemical
gradients. There are two primary transport processes that affect electrical gradients, electroneutral
carriers and electrogenic carries. Electroneutral carries transport uncharged molecules or exchange
an equal number of particles with the same charge across the membrane, ultimately not changing
the overall elecrtochemical gradient. Electrogenic carriers result... Show more content on

Explain this process and how it establishes the conditions for intestinal water absorption. The
esophagus is responsible for establishing the conditions of water take up as it goes through the
gastrointestinal tract. This is achieved by having low water permeability and high salt transport.
Because the esophagus absorbs ions all while not taking up the available water, it lowers the
seawaters osmotic pressure. This low salinity high water solution then travels to the intestines
where it is able to be absorbed due to the altered osmotic pressure of the seawater. #3) Explain the
process by which fish produce calcium carbonate precipitates. Why does calcium carbonate
precipitation help intestinal water absorption? After passing through the esophagus, which absorbs
much of the salt ions in the swallowed saltwater, and the gut the luminal fluid is isosmotic with the
plasma. The intestines continue to absorb salt (sodium through chloride co transport proteins and
the chloride through the sodium co transport proteins and anion exchange protinis) which is
followed by an uptake of water. More chloride is absorbed than sodium which creates an
electrogradient in the cell (the cell being more positive and the plasma more negative). The anion
exchanger intakes chloride all while excreting HCO3 into the intestinal lumen. The intestinal fluid
is highly alkaline, high in HcO3 and high in calcium (from the environment), this allows for CaCo3
to be precipitated in the

President Mckinley s Influence On The Cuban Revolution
On June 26, 1897 President McKinley also convinced Madrid to end the policy of reconcentration
and try having programs to help the Cuban people. President McKinley proclaimed that America
and Cuba had a special relationship this seemed to be a threat towards Spain and that they should
heed Americas request to stop battling Cuba. The killing of Antonio CГЎnoras del Castillo made it
easier for each region to compromise. Because of his death General Valeriano Weyler wanted to
help the refuges and to also form a Cuban autonomy. The Queen of Spain Maria Christina came
up with this plan during November of 1897 the rebels refused this proposition because they
knew that Spain would stay in power and have a strong army. Spain did not give up the idea of
being in power and kept fighting a useless war. Many of the Spanish peninsulares hated the idea
of autonomy and would do anything in their power to stop the new official Spanish policy. The
revolts that were going on during this time made America not trust Spain and made America
believe that Spain cannot control their affairs. Cuba had many revolts for example, both sides in
Cuba preferred war to reform, and the rebels declared for full independence (342). On February
15th, 1898 an American ship named the Maine was visiting Havana, THE MAINE then exploded
in the harbor and had 266 casualties. With no evidence Spain was the first to blame for this travesty

Model Car Research Paper
One project that is very enjoyable and can be done by people of just about any age is building
small plastic model cars. It does not take a lot of skill to build one of these model cars but the
more effort that a person is willing to put into the project the better the end result can be. The
first model will probably not turn out as hoped for or expect, but with a little patience and some
practice the ending results should become better and better. The building of a model car can
give a person feelings of great accomplishment, which can help build up their self esteem. Before
a person is to get started on a model car project they will need to acquire the model kit and will
also need to get some tools. The model kits can be purchased at most hobby stores and you can
get most of the tools and equipment for building it there as well. If a person wanted to save
money on some of the tools and supplies they should be able to get some of the items at a Wal
Mart or other discount stores, and some of the supplies they might already have. A scissors and a

How CFO s came to be
For some reason, business in the early 1900 s didn t seem to care about their finances and record
keeping nearly as much as we do today. People didn t start realizing this until around the 1960 s.
Before the Chief Financial Officer was even thought about, most companies had a Financial
Manager . They kept track of the financial records and handled the taxes but that was about it.
In the 1970 s, the SEC and the FASB were considering making accounting and financing regulations

Since winter temperatures have increased much faster than summer temperatures, it would seem to
line up well with Americans preferences. On a county by county basis they found, using their WPI
scale, that in the past 40 years the average mean WPI score has increased, meaning over time
people are living in more and more preferable weather. Next, they calculated that approximately
80% of people live in counties where the weather has improved. (Egan and Mullin, 2016) Lastly,
Mullin and Egan discuss the problems with the perceived comfort of Americans and how this
comfort will change. Climate models show that the trend of smaller increases in summer
temperatures, and higher increases in winter temperatures of the past 40 years will soon reverse.
Using their WPI data and two separate scenarios for Americans future by 2099, they calculated
how pleasant the weather will most likely be. In the first scenario they calculated in weather
pleasantness if greenhouse house emissions are stabilized shortly after 2100, and found that
approximately 71% of American counties would experience a decrease in WPI score. In the
second scenario they calculated if greenhouse emissions were left unabated by 2100, and found
that approximately 88% of American counties would likely experience a decrease in WPI score.

The Woman Of A Tradesman Essay
recently discovered love won t meddle with her freedom and independence: Mr. Knightley as of
now has a fortune of his own and even consents to move into Hartfield after their marriage. In spite
of the fact that Emma is unmistakably a flight from the usual and ordinary Austen s depiction of
women, the other female characters in the novelbring to light the challenges confronting ladies
without monetary autonomy. Miss Bates, Jane Fairfax, and Harriet Smith represent three
conceivable situations for the women who do not have high social statusand position like Emma.
Miss Bates never wedded and is reliant on her mother s insignificant wage. With the passage of
time, her neediness builds, as does the measure of disparagement that she must persevere from
those around her. Similarly, Harriet is poor and subject to those around her. The girl of a
tradesman, she has few prospects until Robert Martin, and, on account of Emma s impact, is
constantly in risk of extending past her social capacities. Jane Fairfax is considered as a foil to
Emma, and, from various perspectives, appears to be more proper as an Austen s female
character. She has the majority of Emma s beauty, magnificence, and insights, however fails to
offer the pay of a refined and well off man, a reality that appears to fate her to a life as a tutor. It is
through the character of Emma and her monetarily independence, Austen attacks the norms of the
society which leaves women with so less options and

  • 2. History of the Declaration of Independence and The... In one corner we have a nation, fed up with the corruption and constant bullying of their big brother nation, seeking the approval of the world for a revolution. In the other corner we have a nation, bent on gaining the equality among all individuals in their state, coming together to lay down the law to their king. Both America and France had a thirst for a new equal nation and government in which power was given to the people and not to a tyrannical figure. Individuals from both of these countries sat down and wrote up a letter of declaration in demand of the freedom that they so rightfully deserved. Both of them won that freedom, as the Declaration of Independence and the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen flourished... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first and most prominent argument I have with these two documents is there method in itself. Both declarations gave direct and justified reasons for a revolution, but the Declaration of Independence seemed to have taken a passive role. It argued that King George and the British were wronging them and that America was at their last straw. America was being oppressed and grew tired of it. The Declaration stated that the British were infringing on their God given rights as humans, imposing taxes without consent, denying fair trials, as well as many other grievances that attacked the American colonies. Therefore, with their back against the wall they had to separate themselves from the British and establish their own government or live their lives in fear forever. In contrast, The French s Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen took on a more active role. The French people, also known as the National Assembly, banded together and came up with a list of seventeen laws that they felt gave power to the people over those of nobility. They felt that the king and the noble s lack of concern or ignorance of the rights of man was the cause of such a corrupted government, and that gave them a justified reason for revolt. The Declaration of the Rights of Man shows more comparison to America s Constitution or Bill of Rights than to the Declaration of Independence. It stated the rights they were warranted and an obligation for the government to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Wars of Religion Essay Politics and religion in the world of today aren t subjects that generally go hand in hand in our own society. This was not always the case however; in Europe the two were synonymous up until relatively recently, (recently meant in the loosest sense of the word,) and are still closely tied in foreign parts of the world, the most obvious example being the Middle East. The duos intimate relationship was exemplified during the late sixteenth century, extending into the seventeenth century, during a series of wars which would later on come to be called the wars of religion. But is this title completely appropriate? For wars claiming to be centered on religion, they seem to carry an awfully heavy load of political baggage. In fact, one... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She simply made alliances with the less threatening of the enemies (the Huguenots, and the Guises) whenever it suited her, disregarding her Catholic religion at times to escape a heavily Guise influenced monarchy, as well as risking the aforementioned when the protestants seemed to be gaining major influence. These alliances were purely political, and were angled towards getting rid of the largest threat of the moment. Originally, honoring her alliances with the Huguenots, Catherine enacted the Edict of January which allowed the Huguenots to worship in private outside of towns. This; however, was quickly disregarded when the Duke of Guise slaughtered a congregation of worshiping Calvinists in a permitted area. This was brick that broke the camel s back, marking the official start of the French War of Religion. Subsequently, the bloodiest and most violent of conflicts followed as well as the assassination of the duke of Guise, paving the way for the Peace of Saint Germain en Laye and ending the brutal fighting. Following these events, the Huguenots began to steadily gain influence, entertaining the notice of Catherine. Unhappy about the situation, Catherine set to convincing her son, Charles, that the Huguenots were planning a coup. Fearful of losing the crown, Catherine, with the help of the Guises, hastily ordered the Saint Bartholomew s Day Massacre, causing the death of twenty thousand Protestants ... • 4. Shostakovich Essay The symphony is a large and complex musical piece that has the potential to express a wide breadth of experiences and emotions. While the symphony was developed intensely in the eighteenth century in Vienna, the tradition of symphony has long since spread to other countries, providing the composers of different nationalities the opportunity to introduce their own colors into the symphony . Consequently, as different countries develop musical characteristics in the symphony to create their own symphonic tradition, these symphonies can be seen as an expression of national identity. Whether voluntarily or involuntarily, the circumstances surrounding the works and the composers intentions for their work have a profound impact on the relationship between a symphony and the national identity it expresses. Some symphonic composers, limited by the rules set forth by the government, were forced to compose symphonies that strongly expressed the identity of a nation. An example of such a composer is Dmitri Shostakovich. A Russian composer in a time when the Soviet Union controlled all aspects of life, as well as music, Shostakovich was once criticized for some of his works for not adhering to the expectations of the government. Shostakovich s opera The Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk District and his ballet The Limpid Stream were both denounced, which placed great pressure on Shostakovich because such denunciation could lead to violent consequences (Taruskin 22). A pilot study will be performed since no current research looking at the effect of mirror therapy performed on stroke patients with neglect with primary outcome measures of SCT and LBT have provided exact values of means with standard deviations between the groups. An effect size of .50 will be used based on the study performed by Pandian et al. which looked at the effect of mirror therapy performed on stroke patients with neglect and used similar primary outcome measures as this study (Pandian) Therefore, with an effect size of .5, a sample size of 64 participants in each group will be needed. However, it is necessary to account for a predicted attrition rate when recruiting participants. Based on the 12% attrition rate seen in the study performed by Pandian et al., this study will start with an additional 8 participants per group with the hope of maintaining 80% power and reducing the risk of a type II error. (Pandian) Therefore, this study will begin with 72 participants in each group. An intention to treat analysis will be performed in order to account for subjects who drop out of the study. Furthermore, this view enables Virgin Blue to be differentiated from the competitors much easier, having a distinctive outlook different from other airline companies. 1.2 Service recovery and customer handling Service recovery and handling customer complaints is very important in the airline industry and leads to customer satisfaction and loyalty. In the past, Jetstar in particular have had to put their service recovery plans into action. For example, on the 16th of April 2007, a Jetstar flight was cancelled with 300 Australian customers being stranded in the airport for 48 hours. Although the article doesn t specify how Jetstar used service recovery whilst the customer were stranded, it does state that Jetstar personally called each passenger to apologise, as well as telling them they would receive another apology in writing and a $500 travel voucher with the possibility of them being able to travel business class next time (Murphy, 2007). Although the compensation is resonable, Jetstar should have apologised face to face whilst the customers were stranded in the airport in order for the service recovery to be more successful. According to Lovelock et al, if the response time for compliant handling is done immediately, 56% of those customers that are involved will be satisfied (2004). It has also been discovered that 85% of the time, a customer whom had a very serious complaint can be turned into a loyal customer, so long as the handling of the complaint ... It is a disease where cells becomes abnormal and start to divide uncontrollably and from tumors. A frightening thing to consider is that some forms of cancer do not show side effects until the advanced stages. When the disease is severe, the treatment is also severe and sometimes chemotherapy and radiation do not work. However, there is hope for a better system of cancertreatment that has shown to have a higher chance of succeeding provided by genetic mapping. Now, there is an option to have tumors genetically mapped so that cancer treatments can be more personalized. Also, because of genetic mapping doctors are making connections and have a greater understanding... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This has directly lead to the cost of genome sequencing to sharp decline. Before the project the cost to map out a human genome was one billion dollars, after the project was completed it had to decline to ten to 50 million dollars. Now, ten years after the completion of the Human Genome Project the cost to map out a human genome is only three to five thousand dollars. ( Quantitative Advances Since the Human Genome Project (HGP) ) This number is predicted to keep declining as well, in part because of company competition and the increase popularity of genetic mapping. Another reason is because the National Human Genome Research Institute has new goals to expand the use of genetic mapping which includes finding ways to lower the cost of genome sequencing to less than a thousand dollars. It would be a huge feat but a goal the Institute could manage to realize in the next ten years. ( Decade of Genomics NHGRI Celebrates 10th Anniversary ) There was a little unforeseen additional to the National Institutes of Health, which is the Cancer Genome Atlas. The whole goal of this program is to use genetic mapping to its full potential when it comes to cancer research, diagnosis, treatment and prevention. • 12. Essay on The Main Obstacles to Peace The Main Obstacles to Peace There has been violence in the Middle East for the past 60 years, and there still seems to be no hope of a compromise between the Palestinians and the Israelis. In order for a peace settlement to work, both sides must agree to it, and must overcome the four main barriers which stand in the way. They must reach a compromise over the city of Jerusalem, showing it should be controlled by both peoples because of the joint history between them, the attitudes and expectations should try to be fulfilled, which would destroy the extremist movements on both sides of the conflict, but more importantly, it has to see a solution for the refugee crisis in this area of the world,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Jews recently have begun settlement building in the West Bank, encouraged by Ariel Sharon, (he was the housing minister in the 1970 s but now the Prime Minister). Today around 400,000 Israelis live illegally on the Palestinian lands, despite Resolution 242 passed 30 years ago making the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza strip illegal. This is why most terrorism happens in these areas, in order to scare the Israelis into defeat. A Recent example of this was in October 2003 when the Israelis launched a tender for the construction of 550 new homes in the Jewish section of the West Bank there was much protest from the moderate Palestinians but very soon there was a huge increase in the violence on the West Bank. Therefore, since any compromise involves one side giving up or not getting enough of the land they both see as rightfully belonging entirely to them, any peace deal will inevitably leave both the Israelis and the Palestinians unhappy. The Second barriers to peace are the extremists on both sides in this conflict. These people want 100% of the land and wouldn t be happy with anything less than the whole of Palestine to themselves. Both the Palestinian and Israeli Prime Ministers have hoped that with this new Road Map to Peace would satisfy the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. The Values Of Parenting And Child Discipline Parenting and Child Discipline For many years, discipline was and still is a grey line. By 2000, Studies were showing major associations between physical punishment and mental health, physical injury, parent child relationships and family violence in adulthood. This led many countries to take action against violent punishments. Therefore, countries banned domestic violence after they decided that gentle discipline is the best method to raise a kid. On the other hand, many parents are reluctant to leave their physical ways of discipline. These techniques come from cultural, and religious beliefs that have been rooted in the parents. The parents continue to use violence as a way to discipline their kids, claiming that it is more efficient than gentle and soft methods of discipline. To determine the weight of each side s argument, This issue must be passed through the laws of ethics and morality. Ignoring the risks of violence that parenting can lead to, this method in the viewpoint of many is considered to be more efficient and has faster results. Physical punishments are deemed to be a firm way to show kids that they re disobediences are not tolerated. This is believed to satisfy the parents desire for power by rooting a sense fear of the parents authority within the children. The Impacts Of Thomas Jefferson And Alexander Hamilton Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton both had significant impacts on the U.S. government, but also had countless differences throughout their lives. Jefferson originated from one of the most prominent families in Virginia with proper education at a young age, while Hamilton grew up in the slums of St. Croix and received little formal education. As they entered the political world, they sought plans to improve/make america great but their ideas clearly contradicted against one another. Between the two Founding Fathers, I find Alexander Hamilton to be more trustworthy because he constructed a stable foundation for America s economics and government that continues to be used till this day. Thomas Jeffersonwas born into a notable family on April 13, 1743, in Shadwell, Virginia. His mother, Jane Randolph Jefferson, was a member of the proud Randolph clan, a family claiming descent from English and Scottish royalty. His father, Peter Jefferson, was a successful farmer as well as a skilled surveyor and cartographer ( Thomas Jefferson Biography.com ) Jefferson spent majority of his free time practicing violin, roaming the wood and studying his books on a plantation in Virginia. At age nine, Jefferson had begun his formal studies, boarding with a minister teacher, where he continued until age sixteen. One quote that I really like is from Thomas Edisonwho said, I have not failed, I have just found 10,000 ways not to build a lightbulb. This first started dating back about 2000 years ago when the Ancient Mayans were introduced. Although the number of Mayans still alive today has greatly reduced they still had a major impact to our culture as shown through the many challenges they had to overcome and the discoveries that they made. Some of the topics that will be addressed will be geography, history, family structure, and culture. Economic Inequality Within The Global Economy Economic inequality can be defined by the unequal access to economic resources, in the form of opportunities, wealth, capital, land, etc., which determine the individual s or the group s level of power. Generally speaking, individuals and groups with high access to resources have high levels of vertical and horizontal power, which in it turn generate more access to resources and power. The unequal access to economic resources is institutionalized within a society. Thus, economic inequality has far reaching effects and manifestations in other social and political institutions. In addition, with increasing role of global economyon national economies, and the increasing inequality in the global market, which is reflecting on increasing inequality in it turn increases inequality within nations. Thus, the interest among political economists has increased in an effort to understand stratification and to create policies which aim to elevate economic inequality globally and nationally. I will argue that the capitalist economic system is inherently unequal. Farther more, it thrives on creating highly level of economic inequality, where resources and capital is concentrated in the hands of the economic elite, while the rest of the population service to provide cheap labor (specialized on non specialized) which increase economic, social, and political inequality in a society. Mortenson is a mountaineer that ends up in Korphe, Pakistan after he fails to climb K2. It is here where he sees poverty unlike anywhere he has yet to be. Mortenson, struck by shock, promises to come back to the small village and build a school in hopes of turning the place around. He ends up raising enough money to fulfil his promise, being promoted to the director of the Central Asia Institute which build schools across the country, and begins to focus more on girls education. Throughout the novel, the overall tone was direct and straightforward, and it is essentially journalistic due to the third person point of view and changing narration. Mortenson discovers a purpose from the result of being lost in a quest to fulfil his duty of director and the continuation of being a humanitarian in these developing countries which is one of the author s purposes of writing this book. In Three Cups of Tea, there are many points in time when Mortenson thinks he has gone in the wrong direction, but ironically ends up right where he needs to be after all which ends up being the main theme of the book: making the best out of a bad situation. The theme is one that many people should be able to relate to: anyone can turn a bad situation into a good one. For instance, when Mortenson could not reach the peak of K2, he is disappointed, however ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Marx Vs Freud Marx and Freud are two thinkers of roughly the same time period, mostly the 19th century, into the 20th for Freud. Comparing and contrasting their theories provides for a deeper understanding of both of their philosophies. Marx s theory of human nature stresses the idea that people are inherently social. He saw that most of an individual s behavior is dependent on the actions of others, and noted that even the most mundane aspects of human existence are socially learned. Additionally, he believed that a person s society determines their behavior, noting differences among cultures and the fact that there is no one, unified way of thinking that all cultures subscribe to. This ties in well with his materialist theory of history, which places tremendous... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, only with the acknowledgement that a child does not experience sexuality or sexual desire in accordance with the adult definition. Green Mountain Coffee Roasters By David Einhorn Executive Summary Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR), a Vermont based coffee roaster and distributor has been under fire publicly by David Einhorn, founder and fund manager of New York hedge fund company Greenlight Capital. Mr. Einhorn has suggested that Green Mountain Coffee Roasters is over valued based on their unscrupulous accounting and reporting principles. Despite impending expiring patents, Mr. Einhorn has identified that GMRC is in violation of US GAAP standards. Overstatement of inventory, overstatement of income, inaccurate inventory costs and failure to reverse accruals to the customer incentive program has been alleged against GMRC, thus inflating GMRC s overall value. As a result of Mr. Einhorn s whistleblowing, GMRC s stock price has fallen including lost market value. In my opinion, Mr. Einhorn was correct in his allegations against GMRC. To gain consumer and market confidence, GMRC must follow GAAP standards, and ensure preventive mechanisms are in place in order to ensure public mistrust is mitigated that is inclusive to ethical, transparent reporting. BACKGROUND OF THE COMPANY Green Mountain Coffee Roasters is located in Vermont, United States of America. For example, the short story Cathedral incorporates the use of first person. First person point of view is when a narrator conveys an experience from their own perspective. By choosing to use first person narrative, the author allows the reader to gain a concise understanding of how the narratoris thinking and feeling. First person narrative is often used because it allows the reader to better understand the context of the text and the story becomes more intimate for the reader. On the other hand, the short story, The Lady with the Dog integrates the use of third person limited narrative. Third person limited narrative is used when authors... As the plot develops, Gurov meets a young and naive woman named Anna while vacationing in Yalta. Anna and Gurov have an affair together, which leads to Gurov becoming emotionally invested with her. The story is told through Gurov and his emotional instability is especially accentuated. But more than a month passed, real winter had come, and everything was still clear in his memory as though he had parted with Anna Sergeyeva only the day before. And his memories glowed more and more vividly (Chekhov 272). Once Gurov and Anna part, he finds it difficult to move on from her. The third person narrative allows the audience to see the turmoil in this affair through the perspective of Gurov. Although Anna plays an important role in the development of this story, we do not fully understand her perspective of the affair. The audience is however, able to interpret that Anna is feeling guilty from her affair. Overall, despite the fact that we can understand Gurov s emotional attachment to Anna, it is difficult for the reader to understand how Anna is thinking and feeling. In philosophy of mind, the belief that the mental and physical are deeply different in kind: thus the mental is at least not identical with the physical. It directly opposes materialism, as dualism dictates that the mind is unidentifiable to the body, as opposed to stating that the mind and body exist as one. The concept of dualism is not only fundamental in philosophy, but also affects our thoughts on science, religion and psychology: for example, if a convincing rejection of dualism can be formulated, the materialist approach of modern science will be vindicated. Aquinas agreed with the Artistotlean notion that when the soul entered the body it animated it and gave it life; calling it anima. Moreover according to Aquinas, the soul operates independently of the body and it cannot decay; for only things that can break into parts can decay, Thus, following Aquinas argument, the soul is able to survive death. He also said that through the link with a particular human body, each soul becomes individual. So, even when a body dies, the soul that departs retains the individual identity of the body to which it was attached. Despite this earlier work, there was still no explanation of how the soul and body worked together, if at all. This was until Descartes (1596 1650) who provided the fundamental writings on dualism with his work Meditiations on First Philosophy. Indeed, he is considered the father of modern philosophy and his Meditations lead to the school of dualistic ontology known as Cartesian Interactionist Dualism, which still inspires much thought and extension by modern philosophers today. Descartes defined the mind as all the feelings and sensations that he could describe, but which he could not locate physically . He then furthered this by saying that the mind is everything that is non physical. Biden planned his five day visit to meet with Prime Minister Enda Kenny to discuss Irish American relations, and to address the Irish people about the value of global inclusiveness. Throughout his speech, Biden uses different rhetorical strategies that aim to unify the Irish and American people. Biden s arrival to Ireland occurs at a time when immigration is heavily debated, and right before the world s largest pride parade in Dublin. Strategically, his words express the similarities between Ireland and America, by connecting the two nations on one shared value of equality. Biden uses equality as the foundation of a shared sense of resilience that is evidenced in Irish and American past, present, and future. Biden argues that both Ireland and America hold the same values at heart when comparing the Declaration of Independence and the 1916 Proclamation. He states that the phrase We hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal , and the 1916 Proclamation s, all of the children of the nation equally , are notions founded in equal rights, equal opportunity, and religious and civil liberties for everyone. All of the big stocks were paying off handsomely, the little ones too. However, as much as analysis tried to tell the people that this period of great wealth would last, no one could imagine what would come of the United States economy in the next decade. The reasons for this catastrophic event in American 20th century history are numerous, and in his book, The Great Crash, John Kenneth Galbraith covers the period and events which lead up to the downward spiral in the fall of 1929 and the people behind the scenes on Wall Street who helped this fire spread. As explained in the book, holding companies controlled large proportions of such facets of the economy as railroads, utilities and the entertainment businesses. This brought on the constant danger of devastation by reverse leverage. This meant that money made by these operations was used to pay interest on the bonds of the holding companies. Thus, when there was a break in the money coming in, companies could not make payments and were forced into bankruptcy, which trickled down the ladder. The third reason given was the bad banking structure which was in place in the 20 s and into the 30 s. Banks at this time were run individually, thus, when a bank failed or went belly up because of aggregate deposits, it started a domino effect. In 1929 alone, 346 banks closed their doors, leaving people out in the cold, with no money, money which they had trusted in the hands of these banks. This of course left the people with a bad taste in their mouths, and caused them to stop putting money in banks, relying instead on the bottom side of their mattresses. The bad running of banks ties into corruption also. The men who ran banks, men like Charles E. Mitchell, were more interested in keeping the stock market boom going rather then the health of the banks which they ran. These men kept interest rates low and gave bad loans to people who mostly had no hope of ever paying back. The fourth reason stated was the dubious state of the foreign balance. Some of its advantages include non ionizing radiations, real time data availability, large scalable imaging depth, portability and cost effectiveness. After all, only the best were handpicked for government projects. Last but not least were Boyster s clothes, he wore faded jeans and t shirts instead of the suit pants and dress shirts the others donned every day. The dislike was definitely mutual though. The establishment of electrochemical gradient is one of the driving forces for ion movement across the cell membrane. There are two primary transport processes that affect electrical gradients, electroneutral carriers and electrogenic carries. This low salinity high water solution then travels to the intestines where it is able to be absorbed due to the altered osmotic pressure of the seawater. #3) Explain the process by which fish produce calcium carbonate precipitates. Why does calcium carbonate precipitation help intestinal water absorption? After passing through the esophagus, which absorbs much of the salt ions in the swallowed saltwater, and the gut the luminal fluid is isosmotic with the plasma. The intestines continue to absorb salt (sodium through chloride co transport proteins and the chloride through the sodium co transport proteins and anion exchange protinis) which is followed by an uptake of water. More chloride is absorbed than sodium which creates an electrogradient in the cell (the cell being more positive and the plasma more negative).
