Yellowstone s Coyotes
CANINES WHAT: The reintroduction of wolves in 1995 has significantly decreased the coyote
and fox populations, although those who remain often scavenge from wolf kills. Yellowstone s
coyotes are among the largest coyotes in the United States; adults average about 14 kg and some
can weigh up to 20 kg. These intelligent canines primarily eat voles, mice, rabbits, other small
animals. They will commonly feed on carrion and only when in packs, hunt young elk calves in
the spring. In the Lamar Valley, it is estimated that these expert hunters kill 23.6 percent of all
pocket gophers, 35.2 percent of ground squirrels and 76.2 percent of all voles. Their litter is
usually between 4 8 pups born in April and emerging from their dens in May. Coyotes... Show more

For example, even though the badger is listed as common, most visitors will never seen one.
Badgers inhabit sagebrush areas like Lamar Valley, where they find their main food source, the
ground squirrel. During the early and late hours of the day, you may locate a badger by spotting
a dirt geyser , this is your clue to a badger at work. Look up in the trees while hiking through
Cottonwood forests for sleeping raccoon, martins and porcupines. A large marmot colony can be
found on the north shore of Lake Yellowstone just past the sandy beaches of Mary s Bay. Otters
are often spotted in the Madison River and around the Yellowstone River in Hayden Valley. Beaver
can be found in large concentrations in the Bechler River and Fall River

Emotional Abuse And Neglect
Sneddon (2003) explained emotional abuse as the emotional mistreatment or negative response of
the child. Emotional abuse can include sustained rhythmic inappropriate emotional responses and
reactions to the child s emotions and behavior. For example, an inappropriate response may involve
a parent getting angry with the child in reaction to the child unintentionally breaking something and
yelling at the child extremely or calling the child names. In addition, other emotionally abusive
behaviors include terrorizing or belittling the child, isolating them from others, and rejection. Turner
et al. (2012) added that emotional maltreatment might include hostile parenting, such as poor
stability, inconsistency, negative interactions, low nurturing, coercion, and rejection of the child....

There are varying definitions among advocacy groups, clinicians, and lawmakers. It is especially
not easy to prove actual, measureable harm to the child due to the emotional nature of the abuse
(Hamarman, Pope, Czaja, 2002). Smith Slep, Heyman, and Snarr (2011) outlined the difficulty in
defining emotional abuse, and also took into reflection cultural factors. Internationally, verbal
punishment is used 70 85% of the time (e.g. yelling). The question is then asked, is this emotional
abuse or is it piece of a family or group culture? After examining research and other definitions of
emotional abuse, their findings and definition support Sneddon s (2003) definition of emotional
abuse, outlining parental behaviors such as, degrading, humiliating, threatening, berating,
abandoning, or coercing the child, and using extreme discipline. Although there are many opinions
and definitions surrounding emotional abuse, there is agreement on the devastating effects caused
by these behaviors towards

Positive Influences Of The Internet Essay
In 1983, an invention was introduced that would shape the future of American society and
interactions around the world. The society would begin to be centered around technology and shift
online. A plethora of advantages and societal changes has sparked negative thoughts about how the
internet has changed our lives. The ability for our computers to communicate has left us as easy
targets for hackers and has sucked the American youth into a zombie like state into their phones.
Many worry the internetis degrading our culture. When referring to the invention of writing and
reading, Plato denounced writing as inhuman and warned that writing weakened the mind and that
it threatened to destroy people s memory (Furedi). People are often scared of new innovations
because they are aware of its potential to revolutionize their culture. Adjusting to unfamiliar
concepts and innovations can be uncomfortable and difficult for most people. Similarly, modern
day sceptics look at the internet in a negative light because of its rapidly increasing impact on our
society. What most tend to forget is the positive influences of the internet. The increased
interconnection brought by the internet has led to a society that values productivity, rapid
production of ideas, and social awareness.
The idea of the internet first appeared in August of 1962 from J.C.R. Licklider, a professor at
MIT. He came up with a concept called Galactic Network , an idea that envisioned a network of

Analysis Of The Movie James Bond
Goldfinger Character Analysis Rough Draft James Bond is widely known for being a cunning
secret agent who will do everything to save whatever is in danger, anything from the world to an
attractive female, and doing even more just to get the girl. This may be so in the movie depictions,
but in the novels, James Bondcan be depicted as a bumbling alcoholic who stumbles onto the right
answers. James Bond s successes are circumstantial by his actions, losses, and interactions with a
variety of characters from Ian Fleming s seventh James Bond novel, Goldfinger. Ian Fleming was
born on May 28, 1908 in London, United Kingdom. Fleming worked as a journalist, news agent,
and merchant banker throughout his life. During World War II, as a high

James Bond, an agent in Great Britain s Secret Service and Intelligence Agency, is sitting at an
airport in Miami, thinking about death. A man approaches Bond, a man he had met some years
ago, and asks Bond to help him with a problem he has been having; someone has been cheating him
at cards. The man introduces the cheat as Auric Goldfinger, a very wealthy British man. Bond
meets Goldfinger and watches the two men play. He goes to Goldfinger s room and sees a
woman with binoculars and a radio, looking at the card game, cheating for Goldfinger. Bond
seduces the girl, Jill Masterton, blackmails Goldfinger, and escapes with the girl. Later, back in
Britain, Bond gets an assignment to watch over Auric Goldfinger. He is the richest man in
England and the government believes he is smuggling gold out of the country. Bond goes to a
golf course and happens to run into Goldfinger again. Goldfinger asks Bond to golf, Bond
accepts, and Goldfinger cheats again. Bond fools Goldfinger and ends up beating him. Soon
after, Bond follows Goldfinger on a tour through Europe. On this tour, Bond meets a girl
introduced as Tilly Soames. Later he encounters her again at Goldfinger s compound in
Switzerland. She is actually Tilly Masterton, sister of Jill Masterton, and is out to kill Goldfinger
as revenge for Goldfinger killing Jill. They are soon discovered and brought to Goldfinger who

Cybercrime Is A Serious Issue
What are the main risks to cyber security and are states or non state actors the main challenge?
Word Count 1188
Cybercrime is a serious issue that the international community faces today, with risks such as theft,
espionage, surveillance and sabotage, a very real and accessible threat exists. Cyber security can be
defined as a cyber activity that may threaten the security of a system or its information (Threat
report 2015). There are various state and non state actors that both participate, instigate and also
defend for and against these risks to both manage and maintain security and safety for the nation it

Cyberspace has many vulnerabilities in which malicious actors can use this system in ways it
was not intended to do. There was a variety of ways in which state and non state actors can use
these vulnerabilities such as malicious software to launch a cyber attack such as theft, espionage,
surveillance and sabotage. The effects of a cyber attack can be highly uncertain and unexpected.
Worms and viruses, attack tools, can spread uncontrollably and globally. Cyber attacks are then
seen as a tool for a state to employ as a utility against an adversary to create a bargaining range to
prevent an apparent war (Brantly, 2014).
Cybertheft is the act of using an internet to steal someone s or interfere with someone s use of
property (USlegal.com). This theft can include financial or personal information from the hacking
use of a computer. Malware (Malicious software) has been used increasingly lately becoming a
concern for businesses, governments and individuals. Malware uses backdoor Trojans to capture
people s information covertly. Examples of Cyber thefts include embezzlement, fraud and theft of
intellectual property. The National Computer SecuritySurvey found that in 2005 of 7818
businesses surveyed, 67% detected at least one cybercrime and 11% of those detected Cybertheft.
Macdonald and Fitzgerald (2014) states that the most common type of fraud is embezzlement,

better tasting product, they often load it up with sugar. This does not work well, as our body
cannot process the sugar fast enough. So this amount of sugar tells the pancreas to make insulin,
which is the fat producing hormone. High insulin levels also have the problem of blocking the
Full! signals that travel to a person s brain. From there, the converted sugarenergy gets stored in the
liver, and the excess gets stored in fat cells, creating, well, the bad fat no one wants on their body.
This is often common with low fat foods, and certain carbohydrates, as they turn into sugar, and
eventually, fat.

William Clover, talking about his experience in Lyon, the second largest city in France in his
book The French Don t Diet Plan, says, A... search on the official Lyon website revealed that
there are no gyms in that city. This might confuse some people, as they think about the thin, and
small waistlines of our Parisian counterparts. How can people not work out, but still say so thin?
The answer is simple, they get their exercise elsewhere. They are very active people, while
Americans are often lazy, or only exercise without taking diet into consideration. Actually, before
1953, it was common knowledge that exercise could cause heart attacks and diminish sex drive.
That was until a study in 1953 showed that a fat and a skinny mouse ate the exact same, but had
a difference due to the fat mouse s unhealthy habit of not exercising on his wheel. Fast forward to
1980, and in the next two decades, fitness club memberships doubled. The only problem is,
obesity rates doubled as well. Billions went to trying to lose weight, and a fitness revolution
sparked across the nation. It was easily seen that gyms were expanding, but waistlines expanded as
well, and a decade later, two thirds of Americans were overweight or obese.

In today s biotech marketplace, oncology leads the therapeutic research and commercial space.
Cancer tops the charts as one of the leading causes of death in the United States and around the
world (antibody Drug Conjugates). Early stages of cancer treatment often involve surgery and
radiation therapy. However, chemotherapy drugs, often a last resort, are leading the market in
therapeutics for cancertreatment. Most chemotherapy drugs on the market today do not have the
ability to target the cancer specifically; this leads to unwanted toxic effects to non target organs.
Monoclonal antibodies offer another approach to treating cancer by binding to the cancer surface
receptors and offer cancer killing abilities without the cytotoxic... Show more content on

This therapeutic approach is able to deliver cytotoxic compounds directly to the site of interest, via
linker attachment with cytotoxic compound and antibodies. There are many benefits to ADCs
including increased efficacy of future and current marketed cytotoxic compounds.
ImmunoGen increases its market share by sublicensing this technology to pharmaceutical
companies including Sanofi, Roche, Eli Lilly, and Amgen. For example, Bayer has exclusive
licenses to ImmunoGen maytansinoid TAP technology. The exclusive license grants Bayer the
rights to develop treatments only targeting mesothelin (Cancer Drug Developers Considering
ImmunoGen s Tap Technology). This endeavor is expected to net ImmunoGen roughly $170M for
each product engineered, not including future royalties on sales. Furthermore, Novartis has agreed
to license ImmunoGen s TAP technology to target cancer therapeutics as well (Cancer Drug
Developers Considering ImmunoGen s Tap Technology). This potential deal is set to bring in
roughly $200M.
ImmunoGen s TAP technology produces ADCs to develop improved cancer fighting agents. This is
accomplished by first engineering an antibody to accept a linker that will eventually attach to the
cytotoxic area of interest. This technology can be used to develop cytotoxic compounds or to
enhance currently marketed cytotoxic compounds. Currently, ImmunoGen has roughly 25 ADC
products in the pipeline (ADC The New Frontier). Kadcyla combines

African American Males s Education
African American males struggle every day to prove their worth in an educational setting.
According to society these young men are when it comes to their peers. Early education or daycare
is a child s first educational learning experience outside the home. However, not all African
American males have this experience. A handful of African American
males miss the opportunity to
experience the positive benefits of learning social and cognitive skills. As a result, the absence of
the early educationeffects the African American males ability to achieve higher learning. By the
start of elementary school, these young men are already behind their peers in learning new
information. In an effort to hide their lack of understanding they lose focus and become disruptive
and begin to act like the class clown. Although the blame shouldn t be placed solely on them, their
teachers play a major role when it comes to educating the youth. They have to discover what
inspires each child, yet they always seem to abandon the African American male s interest and
individual learning style. Young men go through the school system experiencing deficiency when it
comes to their learning styles, due to the lack of teachers understanding their circumstances and
how to engage them. Every child, especially African American males can have a chance to succeed
in school if teachers have a full understanding of their cultural and learning styles. Which leads
them to seep through the education system,

music is a major force and presence in contemporary American adolescence (Christenson and

Improving Procurement And Sourcing Efficiency
Pursuit for competitive advantage is vital for the survival of any business organization s supply
chain. Businesses are feeling the difficulty to improve procurement and sourcing efficiency. The
value that can be achieved through successful procurement practices is often a lot harder to achieve
than many companies actually realize. If a company expects to grow and survive, it constantly
needs to add value. Procurementis one area that has become a critical area of focus to create a more
competitive and efficient supply chain. In the past, procurement was seen as insignificant to other
areas of an organization. However, implementing cross functional teams to continually review
suppliers ensures that an organization benefits from the best... Show more content on

Fortune 500 companies like IBM, Dell, and Delta Air Lines are spending higher than 50% of
their revenues on procurement. For a long time, procurement has been looked at as negotiating to
get better prices. Many organizations still view procurement as a way to influence spending to
get discounts and lower costs from their suppliers. However, sustainability and the supply chain
risks that companies face today call for procurement to be different now. Organizations can see
real savings by looking at total cost of ownership, which can include a lot of the end to end supply
chain costs. Disruptions are unavoidable and every decision involved in the procurement process
has a risk factor to it. In order for procurement to influence and affect a company it must present a
business case that it is a value added function. An organization can add value long term with its
ability of purchasing within procurement. Organizations need to stop short term thinking because
of the high risk levels associated with this. Procurement decisions can add a lot of value to a
company, but organizations need to think of the long term implications of their decisions.
Purchasing is important to competitive advantage because it increases value and savings for a firm.
Purchasing can build relationships, drive innovation, improve quality, and reduce products time to
market. Suppliers have a huge impact on organizations total costs because most product features

Bacterial Transformation ( Escherichia Coli )
Bacterial Transformation (Escherichia coli)
Kadian Jones
Dr. F. Redway
BIO 104 Lab 3
November 11, 2014
Introduction According to Medicine.net (2012), genetic transformation is a process by which the
genetic material carried by an individual cell is altered by the incorporation of foreign/exogenous
DNA into its genome. Competent cells are able to accept DNA presented by experimental influence
or manipulation, and the application of genetic engineering with bacteria can aid in the fight against
diseases, allowing individuals to maintain their lifestyles without the threat of certain illnesses like
heart disease, cancer or hereditary disorders (McPhersson 2008). Plasmid DNA are small circular
double stranded helixes, and present in the plasmid are ampr (selectable marker gene) and GFP
(Green Florescent Protein), (BIO RAD 2010).
Figure 1: Illustrates the bacterial plasmid of E. Coli showing the select marker gene and the color
marker gene present.
The bacteria that was used in the experiment was Escherichia coli, it is one of the most commonly
used organisms for gene transfer, and most E. coli are non pathogenic. A non pathogenic strain was
used to conduct the experiment. The conditions was kept at 37 в—¦C, which is the temperature of
the human intestines (BIO RAD 2010). Arabinose is a sugar that the bacteria needs for energy,
used as a food source and enables GFP, which in turn is regulated by araC (Redway 2013).

Liam O Flaherty s The Sniper
In short stories, many people may overlook how greatly an author described the setting. It is
important that a well thought out framework is included in a piece of literature. The Sniper by
Liam O Flaherty, gives a fair setting of Dublin, Ireland at the break of the night. On a rooftop,
across the large city street, the sniper unknowingly faced his brother. They re inevitably against one
another, both now torn apart by civil war. The night they clashed was what the author seemingly
described the most. Setting for this story creates conflict because the sniper had extreme difficulty
seeing his brother in the darkness. The narrator had said, The long June twilight faded into night.

Analysis Of How A Woman Can Get Hurt By Jean Kilbourne
Two Ways a Woman Can Get Hurt , an article by Jean Kilbourne bitterly rags on sex in
advertisement. It goes into detail to describe how companies have become increasingly more
likely to sell sex in advertisements for products that, in reality, are entirely unrelated. Kilbourne
focuses primarily on how this is harmful to society especially women and children and how they
are viewed by men, though men may also be targeted if not nearly as frequently. In a similar article
called Taking a Bite Out of Twilight, Carmen D. Siering shares her disapproval of the popular
novel adored by so many: Twilight. Represented by the iconic red apple held in a women s palm
with a sinister black backdrop, Twilight is a modern fairytale where the prince belongs to a
monstrous society of blood sucking models, and the princess is your average, plain Jane
highschool girl with a knack for getting into trouble. Siering s opinion is most basically this:
Bella is objectified and downgraded in the Twilight series; a character created solely to
compliment the plot propelled by male characters. Where the majority of the population sees an
aching, beautiful and dangerous romance, Siering sees a controlling relationship and a dull female
lead. Kilbourne s article brings to light how Siering s article, directed at Stephenie Meyers readers,
is so accurate with the the recommendation that everyone become more aware of the messages
they are absorbing from media as it snakes its way into society s

The Native American Indian Population
The population that has been officially chosen is the Native American population, also known as
American Indian. Aside from the information given by this course, a Children s Literature class
taken at the Newark branch of the Ohio State University also contributed to my decision. During a
lecture there was a guest speaker of Native American descent, she grew up on a reservation, and in
her work she wrote and illustrated the Native American culture and lifestyle. Her lecture consisted
of the perspective of the Native American population during colonization, and now, as well as the
misconceptions of the population and discussed a council that allows the American Indian
community to be aware of the number of tribes, the number of individuals within each tribe, and
locations of various tribes. The essay will consist of the history of the American Indian population,
current statistics, news within the last six months pertaining to the population, and links and
resources will be provided. The class textbook, Strangers to These Shores 11th Edition by Vincent
N. Parrillo, is the main resource utilized for historical information on the American Indian
population. The book provides information on pre colonization, stereotypes, government policies,
current affects from colonization and statistics. According to the class textbook, before colonization
the Native American population was between six and ten million (Parrillo 2014). Moreover,

Analysis Of James Baldwin s The Great Gatsby
When individuals hold hatred in their minds, they will be more aggressive to others, especially
to the higher level authority. In James Baldwin s story, he is not happy with the white people s
power. He is full of the hatred. When he purposely went to the non colour restaurant, he tries to
challenge the higher levels. Baldwin writes, I pretended not to have understood her, hoping to
draw her closer ... I realized that she would never come any closer and that I would have to strike
from a distance. He wants to know why the whites are the stronger group, why the whites can
destroy his hopes. However, when he found out the whites are weaker than him but still having
more powers, he turns his hatred into violence. Baldwin writes, I picked this up and hurled it with
all my strength at her. She ducked and it missed her and shattered against the mirror behind the bar.
He is angry and being violence, and those violence comes out from his hates. When people looking
down on him, his despairs bitterness and hatred make him wantto get the respects from the higher
authority. He was waiting for the higher authority to throw him out, but the reality makes him

What Is The Fear Of Savagery In Lord Of The Flies
Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, is an allegory that connects the boys behavior in the novel
to the basic behavior of human nature during the cold war. In the novel, the boys have fear and this
is the cause of the destruction and violence that takes place, this then leads to ultimate savagery and
the disobedience. Throughout the entire book fear is what drives these once innocent boys into
savages, and what also pulls most of them away from human behavior.
In the novel Lord of the Flies the boys normal behavior and innocence is changed because of the
fear that they hold. The boys have an extreme fear of this beast like thing that has taken complete
control of them. Maybe there is a beast... maybe it s only us. (William Golding, Lord of the Flies,

This fear is what ultimately drives the savagery. The mask was a thing on its own, behind which
Jack hid, liberated from shame and self consciousness. (William Golding, Lord of the Flies) The
masks that were made and created out of paint serves a purpose. The mask allows Jack, and the
other boys to let their beast out and it is used as something that they use to hide behind. Jack in
the story was insecure of his abilities that he lacked but this mask allowed for him to be set free.
This mask could one s fear to be free, it can also represent good and evil. Lord of the flies

good or evil because we have the ability to act as both especially at the hand of the situation This
quote represents the boys abilities to be good and evil throughout the novel. On the island, they

severity of them. They were divided but the boys did not change only their fear did . This fear only

Interrupt Vs. Asynchronous Communication
Operating System| Assignment #1| | Information System| 2012 03 29| |
1. What is the purpose of interrupts? What are the differences between a trap and an interrupt? Can
traps be generated intentionally by a user program? If so, for what purpose? (Chapter 1)
Interrupt is that causes a computer processor to temporarily stop executing its current program and
execute another program instead, finally returning control to the original program. So it prevent
that more important task goes back because of less important task.
The main difference between a trap and an interrupt is where they are generated. An interrupt is a
hardware generated. And it can be used to signal the completion of an I/O to obviate the need for

6. What are the benefits and detriments of each of the following? Consider both the systems and the
programmers levels. (Chapter 3)
п‚•a) Synchronous and asynchronous communication
п‚•b) Automatic and explicit buffering
a) Synchronous vs asynchronous can be called to blocking vs non blocking communication. The
benefit of synchronous communication is the simplicity and accuracy. However blocking may not
be necessary and waste time. Asynchronous communication allows messages to be delivered
without waiting. However this communication has less reliability than blocking one. b)
Automatic buffering provides a queue with in definite length; thus ensuring the sender will never
have to block while waiting to copy a message. There are no specifications how automatic
buffering will be provided; one scheme may reserve sufficiently large memory where much of the
memory is wasted. Explicit buffering specifies how large the buffer is. In this situation, the sender
may be blocked while waiting for available space in the queue. However, it is less likely memory
will be wasted with explicit buffering.
7. Describe the differences among short term, medium term, and long term scheduling.

I m a Murderer
I m a murderer! The thought hammered into Xavier s head as he lay in bed staring at the
darkened ceiling of his room waiting for sleep to come. But he couldn t shake the dark feeling
already seeded in his gut. He was a murderer! He d killed not one but two men. Alas, William
LeMasters had been an evil, horrible man, and he had wished the man dead numerous times, but
if truth were told, he hadn t really meant to kill him. He d only meant to drain him of his powers
so that he would no longer be a threat, but he hadn t been adequately prepared for the power of the
King s Key. This small, gold staff was possibly the most potent object on Earth, encasing every
power known and many unknown in the empoweredworld. It not only had the ability to empower
individuals with additional powers; it also had the ability to abolish powers, sometimes with deadly
consequences. The prophet had failed to mention that to him. But then, the prophet had failed to
mention a lot of things!
Although LeMasters death hadn t been intentional, the death of his father s long trusted assistant
was another matter. Milton Bailey had been brutally tortured and morbidly maimed by
LeMasters. The excruciating pain as he was dismembered alive chopped away his resolve, and
he feared that he would betray his king by renouncing him. He begged for Xavier to end his life
so he could die with honor knowing he d stayed true to King Wells. In the end, Xavier had killed
Milton, not William LeMasters. He had murdered

Fairy Legends Essay
Fairy legends have been around from time immemorial in Ireland and several other countries.
These legends have been an important part of Irish life and culture. A legend, in contrast to
folklore, is meant to inform and reinforce beliefs. Legends are less about fiction and the
unbelievable, and more about the ordinary. The fairylegends in Ireland are abundant, as there are
many different tales that describe fairies and their habits distinctly. A large portion of these legends
have been told orally, so documenting them is difficult. In modern films and stories, such as
Disney, fairies are generally portrayed as being kind and helpful to humans, but according to Irish
legend, fairies are not always benevolent creatures. The tales involving... Show more content on

Sometimes, fairies offer gifts to humans. In the tale, The Little Herd Girl and the Woman from
Cnoc Aine in Fairy Legends from Donegal, a little girl is lured off by a fairy woman playing the
harp and into a fine castle. She has some bread and is sent off back home. Prior to leaving, she is
given a coin to give to her widowed mother. It is said that from then onward, her mother was
never wanting for money for the rest of her life. In another story called The Three Sneezes from
the same source, a wife is almost taken by fairies at her wedding, but a man blessed her and she
was safe aside from becoming deaf and dumb. When the same man later walked by a couple of
fairies, he heard them tell him of a cure for the woman s deafness and dumbness. He found the
herb, and the woman was cured and well once again. These tales might have been to give hope to
those that were impoverished or ill. The good fortune given by fairies in these legends are
reflective of human desire. Common themes of these types of legends include endless fortune,
magical powers, particularly bountiful harvest or healthy livestock, and goods supplied
mysteriously. However, although some dealings with fairies might lead to good fortune or
health, some people chose to avoid these dealings due to the fact that fairies can be
manipulative. Fairy gifts can be extraordinary, but taken away if the receiver does wrong by the
fairies or breaks an agreement. One unfortunate tale of an Irish piper details this. The Irish piper
overheard a beautiful fairy song, and was given the gift of playing the melody by this fairy.
However, the fairy told him that he was only allowed to play it three times before a live audience.
The piper obeyed the fairy s rule, until one night during a competition, he played the melody a
fourth time in order to win. The instant he was crowned, he fell dead on the stage because of his

Balance Sheet and Goodwill
Goodwill is an intangible asset, probably the most intangible of all intangible assets, hard to
measure and even more difficult to account for. Goodwill today constitutes a much larger part of
acquisition prices than it did previously, resulting in a much greater impact on financial statements.
During the twentieth century the concept of goodwill has changed significantly. In the earlier days
goodwill was thought of as the good and valuable relationships of a proprietor of a business with
his customers. The present concept is broader in that it encompasses many more intangible
economic factors of a business enterprise and accountants now consider that goodwill results from
the evaluation of the earning power of a business by investors ... Show more content on

It is no wonder that managements, in order to avoid this reduction in reportable earnings,
frequently opt to use the pooling of interest method when they complete a merger. Since no
goodwill is created, over eager managers are able to pay outrageous prices for acquisitions with
little or no accountability on the balance sheet. Since it makes no sense to have two different ways
for accounting for a merger, the FASB decided they should eliminate the pooling of interest
method and force all transactions to be done via the purchase method. Executives and politicians
claimed this will significantly reduce the number of mergers since the new standards would cause
reportable earnings to drop as soon as a company had completed an acquisition. As a concession,
the FASB will no longer require goodwill to be written off unless the assets became impaired
(which means it becomes clear that the goodwill is not worth what the company paid for it).
The FASB s six members unanimously approved two new accounting standards on Friday July 23,
2001. Financial Accounting Statement 141 will eliminate the pooling of interest method for
booking mergers. The method had been popular with dealmakers because it allowed companies to
do deals at a premium without marking up their assets. These markups inflate the size of future
amortization expenses and depressed reported earnings, supporters of pooling said. The FASB also
passed Financial Accounting Statement 142 a closely related standard

Personal Ethical Argument
The set of personal ethical principles which I live by are comprised of a belief in absolute right
and wrong, man s duty to obey God, and also his duty to love his neighbor as himself; each of
these principles were formed by a Faith in God and in the Bible. The principle of absolute right
and wrong was constructed through understanding that if right and wrong were contingent on
man s opinions and attitudes, then both laws and guidelines would become pointless.
Furthermore, God shows that right and wrong are absolute and not contingent on man when He
states His warning, Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for
light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! (Isaiah 5:20). In addition
to this principle, I also came to believe that man is called to obey God for several reasons: He is all
powerful, He created man to give Himself glory, and He desires what is best for us. Like the two
previous ethical principles, loving one s neighbor as himself, was constructed out of a faith in
God and in His infallible Word. Man is called to perform this practice because, as the Bible states,
God ... first loved us. (1 John 4:19)... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, one also may improve in identifying which actions are right and wrong in moral
dilemmas. An example of this would be when I considered quitting my youth group band.

knew that it did not matter if it was me or another person, it was wrong. Because of this reality, I

20th Century American Politics
Over the course of the 20th century, the people located in what is now modern day Slovakia
experienced immense political transformation. Before the end of World War I, the Slovakian people
were part of the Austro Hungarian Empire. When the empire dissolved, two republics were formed
creating Czechoslovakia until it too was dismantled by political demonstrations in the 1970s and
1980s. However, this volatile nature settled down when Slovakia became its own independent state
in 1993. Though the state is relatively young, it is still an imperative component of the European

main political policy tends to focus around cultural issues, which has negatively impacted the nation

Politics is usually characterized by contests for and shifts of power signifying the desire of the
people to place their sovereignty in the hands of responsible leaders. Such leaders devise political

Navigable rivers provided the means of movement, as settlers sailed into the Piedmont. While large

belonging to a certain category to the extent that it is similar to a typical case from that category
is the definition of representativeness heuristic (Kenrick, Neuberg, Cialdini 78). The correct
answer to question 30, which is a definition, is correspondent inference theory. Franklin dislikes
the Rush Limbaugh radio talk show. At a party, Franklin meets Jefferson, who lavishly praises
the Rush Limbaugh show. Franklin takes an instant dislike to Jefferson. Which of the following
psychological theories would best predict Franklin s response to Jefferson (Huck) , was also one
of the questions I missed on the mid term. This is question 46 which is located on the seventh
page. For this question I answered reciprocity theory. I don t even know if there is a reciprocity
theory but there is a norm of reciprocity. The norm of reciprocity requires that we repay others
with the form of behavior they have given us (Kenrick, Neuberg, Cialdini, 196). Franklin did not
repay Jefferson with the same behavior so this is not the answer. The balance theory states that we

Laura Esquivel s Like Water For Chocolate
Laura Esquivel is best known for her first book, Like Water for Chocolate, a compelling story
and cookbook. Laura Esquivel was born in Mexico City, Mexico. While teaching as a kindergarten
teacher, Esquivel began writing short stories. During the 70s and 80s, Esquivel scripted plays for
the local theatre. In 1990, Esquivel wrote her first book, Like Water for Chocolate. Like Water for
Chocolate became an instant best seller all over the world, selling 4.5 million copies. Like
Water for Chocolate was made into a movie in 1992 with the help of Esquivel s husband.
Esquivel continued to write books such as: The Law of Love (1996), Between the Fires (2000),
and Malinche (2006). (Laura Esquivel). Like Water for Chocolate is a book about a forbidden
love story between a young Mexican woman named Tita and her love, Pedro. Like Water for
Chocolate is magical realism, meaning that it combines magic into a non magical world. Tita
uses her cooking to express her feelings and her feelings are reflected onto the persons who eat the

The Defense Of The Insanity Defense
The insanity defense has been used in several cases in criminal law. This defense basically states
that the accused cannot be held responsible for what he/she did because they had no control over
their actions. Many times the defense attorney will plea for a deal that the defendant be sent to a
mental rehabilitation center for proper treatment. When using this defense the defense attorney will
argue that there may be a chemical imbalance in his brain therefore he had no idea what he was
doing at the time.
In my opinion the insanity defense should not exist because many of the people accused just use to
get out of their justified sentence. Daniel M Naghten was a woodworker who believed he was the
target of a conspiracy involving the pope ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And this is because so many people were using this defense to get out of being in trouble and later
being sentenced. In many cases involving the insanity defense the defense attorney will raise the
point that there is a chemical imbalance in his head, basically stating that he had no control over
himself at the time that he did the act of violence.
Monte Durham was a 23 year old who had been in and out of prison and mental institutions since
he was 17. He was convicted for housebreaking in 1953, and his attorney appealed. Although the
district court judge had ruled that Durham s attorneys had failed to prove he didn t know the
difference between right and wrong, the federal appellate judge chose to use the case to reform the
McNaughton rule. Citing leading psychiatrists and jurists of the day, the appellate judge stated that
the McNaughton rule was based on an entirely obsolete and misleading conception of the nature of
insanity. He overturned Durham s conviction and established a new rule. The Durham rule states
that an accused is not criminally responsible if his unlawful act was the product of mental disease
or mental defect. The Durham rule was eventually rejected by the federal courts, because it cast
too broad a net. Alcoholics, compulsive gamblers, and drug addicts had successfully used the
defense to defeat a wide variety of crimes. (Legal information institute, Cornell university law
school). This is an example of how the insanity

Dual Language Classrooms
Introduction
The research I will be investigating will be the effectiveness of dual language classrooms. Dual
language classrooms often referred to as bilingual education are academic programs that are taught
in two languages throughout the school year. There are two types of dual language classrooms.
Often determined by population and current demographics within the school district one way or
two way classes will be offered. One way dual language classrooms are classrooms of only one
type of native language speaker. As an example, a one way dual language classroom would have
only students who speak Spanish as their first language in the classroom. Often these students speak
only Spanish at home and would receive instruction in both

Life at a Medieval University
Life at a medieval university for clerics was in many regards similar to our present day college
experience. When college was in session, life was basically split into two categories; life in the
books, and life outside the books if you will. Scholars needed to focus their attention to the tasks at
hand during learning hours. As we know today, the more time you spend studying, the better grades
you ll achieve. On the other hand, scholars needed a release from the daily grind of constant
academic involvement. This may have included some popular pastimes such as drinking, gambling,
and wreaking havoc downtown (nothing a modern student would do). The scholars experienced
many of the problems that modern day collegians deal with as well.... Show more content on

If you were at a university at this time, you would follow the religious standards, just as I could
never get out of going to Friday mass at HGA. Nowadays, religion is a touchy topic. It is left to
the discretion of the individual whether or not he or she wants to follow the practices and how
closely. Church and state are now separated as to avoid major conflicts. Peter Abelard questions
the theological teachings of medieval universities and is criticized for it. He says Is God one, or
no? At this time scriptures were not to be questioned and were considered to be true. As we
know now, science has become a major source of answers in society. Anyway, Abelard brings a
whole new dimension to the table when he questions god s existence and some of the things that
the church stands for. The whole basis is to use logic and reason to ponder things in a
philosophical fashion. This faith vs. reason debate involved Abelard and others who felt that god
was in a persons being, or heart. Academia took up most of the students daily and weekly lives.
Scholars took full advantage of down time to relax and enjoy themselves. Social life was the
second major aspect of a cleric s university experience. As we know, the student body greatly
impacts the surrounding town s economy; however social issues arise as well. When students and
townspeople are in the same atmosphere, and drinking, fights are bound to break lose. These battles

Calcium Intake Lab Report
Calcium Intake Lab
Calcium is a mineral that is regulated in the blood by the thyroid. According to the Medline Plus
website (2018), Calcium is important for balancing a body s pH, contracting and relaxing muscles,
building strong bones, blood clotting, sending and receiving nerve signals, and keeping a normal
heartbeat (Medline Plus, 2018). When our diets lack in calcium, our body has to work twice as hard
and takes from calcium stores in our bones. As stated in option three, a food journal was kept to
keep track of my calcium intake for two days and compared to a USDA website. These are my
findings.
The diet was not varied too much, but it was also a time right before groceries were bought so
there was some junk food binge eating. On the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Edward Group (2015, para. 3 10), Calcium Orotate is the most effective form of a calcium
supplement and is great for supporting calcium levels. Other forms of calcium are calcium
carbonate, calcium citrate, oyster shell calcium, calcium gluconate, calcium lactate, calcium
phosphate, and calcium citrate malate, (Group, 2015, para 3 10). This means that there are several
different kinds of calcium supplements but they are all not created equal. Some calcium
supplements are more bioavailably effective than others. Other calcium supplements should be
avoided. Calcium carbonate is not high in bioavaility and requires the production of extra stomach
acid to be absorbed. It is also one of the cheapest and most prevalent forms of calcium supplements
sold today , (Group, 2015, para. 3).
In conclusion, having an adequate intake of calcium in important for many functions of the body.
Keeping a journal of daily food intake can help a person to be aware of missing nutrients that are
important for proper functioning of the body. If a person is low on their calcium intake then
eating or drinking foods with dairy will allow a person to increase their calcium, because dairy has
the best bioavailability. However, lactose intolerant people may need to take a calcium supplement
in order to get adequate amounts of calcium.

What Is The Significance Of The Gold Rush In Canada
History may not be everyone s favourite subject however, there are some fascinating events that
have happened in Canada s history in which one of them was the Gold Rush Era. In Canada, the
three key events in the Gold Rush Era included the Fraser River, Cariboo, and Klondike gold
rushes. A gold rush is when a numerous amount of individuals migrate to a specific region to get
hold of newly discovered gold in pursuit of riches.
The Fraser River Gold Rush was British Columbia s first significant gold rush. In 1857, a local
man was taking a drink from the Thompson River when he noticed a tiny glittering pebble. That
pebble was then discovered to be gold and with that the history of British Columbia was changed
for eternity. In 1858, when the word spilled out that there was gold near the Fraser River, more
than 30, 000 people flocked to the shores of the Fraser River to Lillooet, British Columbia to find
gold. A significant amount of seekers were Americans looking for new opportunities after the
California gold rush had come to an end. Due to the arrival of many Americans, to prevent
American invasion from threatening the British sovereignty in the area, a new colony called New
Caledonia was created, which is now present day British Columbia. The gold rush ... Show more

between Yale and Barkerville, BC to provide a wagon route to the gold fields of the Cariboo
regions. In 1866, the Cariboo Gold Rush

Chicago School Of Social Ecology Theory
Chicago School of Social Ecology has played its vital role in the development of urban ecology
theory as the sociologists and ecologists from aforementioned school such as Robert Park and
Earnest Burgess propagated that Central Business District (CBD) impacts urban and downtown
planning, urban renewal, urban expansions, housing projects, commercial activities,
industrialization, community development and urban ecological system. Next, the Berlin School
of Urban Ecology also extended the aforementioned theoretical argument when the theorist Herbert
Sukopp elaborated on studying the importance of biodiversity patterns, environmental
transformations and natural changes in the global ecological system, processes and structures.
Therefore, the theorists, academicians, researchers, sociologists and environmentalists argue that
the theory of urban ecology broadly incorporates the facets of other crucial disciplines related to
education, health, economy, psychology, social sciences, sociology, anthropology, history,
environment, biosciences, economy, politics, international relations, geography, urban architecture
and technology. One of the major developments pertaining to urban ecology theory is the
comprehensiveness of modern urban system by incorporating social consciousness, social
structures, social and government institutions, community relationships, migration, public
infrastructure, governmental revenue streams, unemployment and underemployment problems. In

Eva Braun s Definition Of The Word Evil
How could the woman behind the most deviant man in the history of the world go somehow
unnoticed. Was she a possible helping hand in what was the worst genocide in recent history?
Eva Braun is quite possibly the second hand definition of the word evil. Was her life really like
this? Could a women that lived a seemingly normal life be capable of such heinous crimes? Eva
Braunwas a right hand man to one of history s most notorious criminals, but perhaps in her own
light was not quite the woman that everybody makes her out to be.
Something that many people do not know about Eva is that, she was a simple woman who lived a
seemingly simple life. Eva Braun was born on February 6, 1912 to Friedrich and Franziska Braun,
in Munich Germany(3). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun never shared an intimate moment together or so it seems (Nobody
knew Hitler s true sexuality so this may of had an impact)(3).Their relationship was strictly
domestic and relaxatory rather than the usual erotic relationship that many couples share
today(9). They were merely close friends that thrived off of each others joy and companionship
in times of need(3). Another part of their relationship that was different than most is that it was
completely private. Hitler and Eva rarely appeared in public together(9). Even if they did, they
would not sit together or give any evidence that they were even acquaintances of one another(8).
This was hard on Eva, as she longed for his attention. She would often cry when he was not
around and it was apparent that he had a significant impact on her mood. She even went to
lengths as trying to take her own life at one point in time because she did not think she would
ever be good enough for him(3). This proved to change the views that Hitler had on the
relationship, as it started to drastically change(8). Soon after the incident they moved in together
and Eva started to arrange gatherings for Hitler s closest friends otherwise known as his inner
circle . It was not long after that they started to live together that they were married. It was in April
of 1945 in Berlin where the ceremony happened, tragically a day before both of their deaths.
Although they were close companions for many years, Eva never did

The Crime Of Crime And Crime
Crime is everywhere. It dominates news broadcasts and newspapers. It also takes up the majority
of television shows and movies. As well as a great deal of fiction novels and books. Controlling
and fighting crimes are essential for the safety of citizens. Also the credibility and power of a
government are affected greatly by how they handle crimeand deal with criminals. When a crime
takes place, the part that fascinates people the most is how the offender is captured and brought to
justice (Nathan, 2005, p 29 34).
Nowadays, nearly all serious crimes are solved with the help of one or more police investigators,
police officers, witness testimonies, and the help of psychological profilers and forensics.
Science has great contributions in the detection of crime and controlling criminals. The
advancement in DNA identification and a variety of forensic procedures help in solving many
crimes as it is portrayed in fictional television shows such as CSI.
Contributions from psychology are slowly emerging to keep up with these developments from the
natural sciences. There are many different ways in which psychology can contribute to police work.
All are brought up together under the field of investigative psychology.
The contributions that psychologist can make to police investigations have been most widely
known and understood in terms of offender profiles . Offender profiling is the combination of
sociological, psychiatric, psychological, and criminological disciplinary

Sarah Mclachlan Song In The Arms Of An Angel
Have you ever seen the ASPCA commercials where they show pictures of abused and neglected

opportunity to volunteer at the Town and Country Animal Shelter; a non profit, no kill shelter run

Last year I adopted a rescue dog. She is a Labrador retriever mix that was a day away from being
euthanized at a Texas Animal Shelter that wasn t a no kill shelter. Her and her brothers were
abandoned near birth. A lady, who was active in the rescue community, cut her vacation short
and traveled to Texas to retrieve the litter. She brought them back to Nebraska where I was lucky
enough to bring Daisy into my life. Though Daisy has eaten six memory foam pillows, four
remote controls, the linoleum in the kitchen and parts of the carpet, I wouldn t trade her for
anything. I am honored to be able to provide her with a good home and love. As discussed in the
Civic Engagement video, we don t just get a free ride in our society and we have a responsibility
to give back in some way (2015). Caring for a pet not only promotes a better world to live in but
it teaches responsibility and compassion which can carry over into other aspects of one s life.
Responsibility will assist in citizens being accountable for their actions, give a sense of duty,
and help one remain just when being placed in a position of power. Compassion will allow for
our citizens to be concerned with sufferings or misfortunes of others. As you can see, the simple
caring for a pet has the ability to promote a moral society as well as make the world a better place
to live in. I took this opportunity to add an

King Lear Blindness
Literary Analysis: King Lear The Blinding
In the play, King Lear, vision and blindness are repeated allegories that relate to the characters,
Lear and Gloucester. This exemplifies the theme of self knowledge and consciousness that occurs
in the play. These classic allegorical is inverted in King Lear, producing a situation in which those
with well working eyes cannot see what is happening around them, and those without sight are
able to see clearly. What do I mean? Well, Lear is completely blind to the character of his
children, while Gloucester blindness is literal. Blindness is echoed through Gloucester and Lear to
explain Lear s metaphorical blindness with Gloucester s literal loss of vision.
Lear is a powerful man who does not see how genuine his youngest daughter, Cordelia s love is,
but believes the deceitfulness of her sisters, Goneril and Regan. Kent, one of Lear s most loyal
servants, sees the two facedness of Cordelia s sisters and tries to make him look pass the show
that Goneril and Regan put on and see them for who they truly are, and Lear refuses. Lear

Lear can see through a sympathetic lens, after having exchanged the pride for shame, revealing to
us that mental blindness can be more damaging than physical blindness. While Gloucester, who
willingly admits that [he] stumbled when [he] saw, is only able to see, though sightless, after he
has suffered (4.1.20). Only through the physical pain of losing his sight was Gloucester able to
see the truth of his sons. Unquestionably, the plots of Lear and Gloucester run similar courses.
However, Shakespeare employs Gloucester s plot to clarify Lear s plot. Through the physical
blinding of Gloucester, Shakespeare provides an equivalent, which contextualizes King Lear s
theme of consciousness and allows Lear s own metaphorical blindness to be fully

Parks and Recreation Districts
GENERAL PARKS AND RECREATION DISTRICTS
The use of special districts to administer parks and recreation services originates from a
successful experiment by New York City in SSSS. The city created a commission to depoliticize
the provision of parks and recreation services, which led to the development of Central Park.
Following this model of success, a number of states now have some form of park district that span a
range of services, including open space protection, land conservation, environmental education,
and leisure activities. Local governments increasingly offload parks and recreation
responsibilities to special districts because they require large capital investments and they benefit
from district boundaries drawn according to public use. The impact of tax limitations and
pressure on general funds also encourages development of park districts. Flickinger and Murphy
() provide insight from a park director in Illinois who believes special taxing status is essential
because park and recreation departments tend to take a back seat to streets, police, fire, utilities,
and other mandatory services when time came to set or cut budgets and hire qualified personnel
(1990, p. 153).Though parks and recreation are a common form of district, research evaluating its
success is limited in both quantity and scope.
The vast majority of research on parks and recreation districts is concentrated in the Midwest where
they are most prevalent. The Illinois Park and Recreation

In the book Salvage the Bones, by Jesmyn Ward, there is a parallel storyline between Esch s life
and the ancient myth of Jason and Medea. Throughout the book, Esch constantly compares herself
with Medea, while referring to Manny as Jason. Both Esch and Medea are forced to cope with the
fact that the two people whom they loved and cherished most in the world have deceived them. As
Esch s character comes of age throughout the book, her decreasing dependency on Manny helps her

Luckily for Esch, not only did she have three loving brothers, but she also had all of her brother s
friends, whom looked after her like she was their little sister. After Hurricane Katrina had ended,
Esch had a chat with her dad, in which he was convinced that Esch should keep the baby. This
made her more confident, to know that she had not only her brother s approval, but also her
father s approval (247). Esch s family and friends are accepting of her pregnancy, and they all
even offer to help take care of her and the baby, in hopes that this baby will be the miracle which
will bring the family together. After this conversation with her dad, Big Henry also confronts
her about this conversation, which he has accidentally listened on. He asked her Who the
daddy? , and when she cautiously replies with It don t have no daddy , he caringly replies to her
You wrong...this baby got multiple daddies , which shows that even though he isn t a part of the
family, he is implying that he will assist in raising the baby, along with her real family (254).
Medea is not as fortunate as Esch. After being betrayed by Jason, she had no one to turn to, not
even her own family. So, to take revenge on Jason, she resorts to murdering all of their children,
and even his new bride, leaving him with no one, the way that he left her. Esch and Medea are

  • 2. Yellowstone s Coyotes CANINES WHAT: The reintroduction of wolves in 1995 has significantly decreased the coyote and fox populations, although those who remain often scavenge from wolf kills. Yellowstone s coyotes are among the largest coyotes in the United States; adults average about 14 kg and some can weigh up to 20 kg. These intelligent canines primarily eat voles, mice, rabbits, other small animals. They will commonly feed on carrion and only when in packs, hunt young elk calves in the spring. In the Lamar Valley, it is estimated that these expert hunters kill 23.6 percent of all pocket gophers, 35.2 percent of ground squirrels and 76.2 percent of all voles. Their litter is usually between 4 8 pups born in April and emerging from their dens in May. Coyotes... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, even though the badger is listed as common, most visitors will never seen one. Badgers inhabit sagebrush areas like Lamar Valley, where they find their main food source, the ground squirrel. During the early and late hours of the day, you may locate a badger by spotting a dirt geyser , this is your clue to a badger at work. Look up in the trees while hiking through Cottonwood forests for sleeping raccoon, martins and porcupines. A large marmot colony can be found on the north shore of Lake Yellowstone just past the sandy beaches of Mary s Bay. • 3. Emotional Abuse And Neglect Sneddon (2003) explained emotional abuse as the emotional mistreatment or negative response of the child. Emotional abuse can include sustained rhythmic inappropriate emotional responses and reactions to the child s emotions and behavior. For example, an inappropriate response may involve a parent getting angry with the child in reaction to the child unintentionally breaking something and yelling at the child extremely or calling the child names. In addition, other emotionally abusive behaviors include terrorizing or belittling the child, isolating them from others, and rejection. Turner et al. (2012) added that emotional maltreatment might include hostile parenting, such as poor stability, inconsistency, negative interactions, low nurturing, coercion, and rejection of the child.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are varying definitions among advocacy groups, clinicians, and lawmakers. It is especially not easy to prove actual, measureable harm to the child due to the emotional nature of the abuse (Hamarman, Pope, Czaja, 2002). Smith Slep, Heyman, and Snarr (2011) outlined the difficulty in defining emotional abuse, and also took into reflection cultural factors. Internationally, verbal punishment is used 70 85% of the time (e.g. yelling). The question is then asked, is this emotional abuse or is it piece of a family or group culture? After examining research and other definitions of emotional abuse, their findings and definition support Sneddon s (2003) definition of emotional abuse, outlining parental behaviors such as, degrading, humiliating, threatening, berating, abandoning, or coercing the child, and using extreme discipline. Although there are many opinions and definitions surrounding emotional abuse, there is agreement on the devastating effects caused by these behaviors towards ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Positive Influences Of The Internet Essay In 1983, an invention was introduced that would shape the future of American society and interactions around the world. The society would begin to be centered around technology and shift online. A plethora of advantages and societal changes has sparked negative thoughts about how the internet has changed our lives. The ability for our computers to communicate has left us as easy targets for hackers and has sucked the American youth into a zombie like state into their phones. Many worry the internetis degrading our culture. When referring to the invention of writing and reading, Plato denounced writing as inhuman and warned that writing weakened the mind and that it threatened to destroy people s memory (Furedi). People are often scared of new innovations because they are aware of its potential to revolutionize their culture. Adjusting to unfamiliar concepts and innovations can be uncomfortable and difficult for most people. Similarly, modern day sceptics look at the internet in a negative light because of its rapidly increasing impact on our society. What most tend to forget is the positive influences of the internet. The increased interconnection brought by the internet has led to a society that values productivity, rapid production of ideas, and social awareness. The idea of the internet first appeared in August of 1962 from J.C.R. Licklider, a professor at MIT. He came up with a concept called Galactic Network , an idea that envisioned a network of computers ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

So this amount of sugar tells the pancreas to make insulin, which is the fat producing hormone. High insulin levels also have the problem of blocking the Full! signals that travel to a person s brain. From there, the converted sugarenergy gets stored in the liver, and the excess gets stored in fat cells, creating, well, the bad fat no one wants on their body. This might confuse some people, as they think about the thin, and small waistlines of our Parisian counterparts. How can people not work out, but still say so thin? The answer is simple, they get their exercise elsewhere. They are very active people, while Americans are often lazy, or only exercise without taking diet into consideration. Actually, before 1953, it was common knowledge that exercise could cause heart attacks and diminish sex drive. That was until a study in 1953 showed that a fat and a skinny mouse ate the exact same, but had a difference due to the fat mouse s unhealthy habit of not exercising on his wheel. Fast forward to 1980, and in the next two decades, fitness club memberships doubled. The only problem is, obesity rates doubled as well. Billions went to trying to lose weight, and a fitness revolution sparked across the nation. ImmunoGen increases its market share by sublicensing this technology to pharmaceutical companies including Sanofi, Roche, Eli Lilly, and Amgen. For example, Bayer has exclusive licenses to ImmunoGen maytansinoid TAP technology. The exclusive license grants Bayer the rights to develop treatments only targeting mesothelin (Cancer Drug Developers Considering ImmunoGen s Tap Technology). This endeavor is expected to net ImmunoGen roughly $170M for each product engineered, not including future royalties on sales. Furthermore, Novartis has agreed to license ImmunoGen s TAP technology to target cancer therapeutics as well (Cancer Drug Developers Considering ImmunoGen s Tap Technology). This potential deal is set to bring in roughly $200M. ImmunoGen s TAP technology produces ADCs to develop improved cancer fighting agents. This is accomplished by first engineering an antibody to accept a linker that will eventually attach to the cytotoxic area of interest. This technology can be used to develop cytotoxic compounds or to enhance currently marketed cytotoxic compounds. Currently, ImmunoGen has roughly 25 ADC products in the pipeline (ADC The New Frontier). Kadcyla combines ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, not all African American males have this experience. A handful of African American males miss the opportunity to experience the positive benefits of learning social and cognitive skills. As a result, the absence of the early educationeffects the African American males ability to achieve higher learning. By the start of elementary school, these young men are already behind their peers in learning new information. In an effort to hide their lack of understanding they lose focus and become disruptive and begin to act like the class clown. Although the blame shouldn t be placed solely on them, their teachers play a major role when it comes to educating the youth. They have to discover what inspires each child, yet they always seem to abandon the African American male s interest and individual learning style. • 16. Bacterial Transformation ( Escherichia Coli ) Bacterial Transformation (Escherichia coli) Kadian Jones Dr. F. Redway BIO 104 Lab 3 November 11, 2014 Introduction According to Medicine.net (2012), genetic transformation is a process by which the genetic material carried by an individual cell is altered by the incorporation of foreign/exogenous DNA into its genome. Competent cells are able to accept DNA presented by experimental influence or manipulation, and the application of genetic engineering with bacteria can aid in the fight against diseases, allowing individuals to maintain their lifestyles without the threat of certain illnesses like heart disease, cancer or hereditary disorders (McPhersson 2008). Plasmid DNA are small circular double stranded helixes, and present in the plasmid are ampr (selectable marker gene) and GFP (Green Florescent Protein), (BIO RAD 2010). Figure 1: Illustrates the bacterial plasmid of E. Coli showing the select marker gene and the color marker gene present. Kilbourne focuses primarily on how this is harmful to society especially women and children and how they are viewed by men, though men may also be targeted if not nearly as frequently. In a similar article called Taking a Bite Out of Twilight, Carmen D. Siering shares her disapproval of the popular novel adored by so many: Twilight. Represented by the iconic red apple held in a women s palm with a sinister black backdrop, Twilight is a modern fairytale where the prince belongs to a monstrous society of blood sucking models, and the princess is your average, plain Jane highschool girl with a knack for getting into trouble. Siering s opinion is most basically this: Bella is objectified and downgraded in the Twilight series; a character created solely to compliment the plot propelled by male characters. Where the majority of the population sees an aching, beautiful and dangerous romance, Siering sees a controlling relationship and a dull female lead. It is said that from then onward, her mother was never wanting for money for the rest of her life. • 30. Balance Sheet and Goodwill Goodwill is an intangible asset, probably the most intangible of all intangible assets, hard to measure and even more difficult to account for. Goodwill today constitutes a much larger part of acquisition prices than it did previously, resulting in a much greater impact on financial statements. During the twentieth century the concept of goodwill has changed significantly. In the earlier days goodwill was thought of as the good and valuable relationships of a proprietor of a business with his customers. The present concept is broader in that it encompasses many more intangible economic factors of a business enterprise and accountants now consider that goodwill results from the evaluation of the earning power of a business by investors ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is no wonder that managements, in order to avoid this reduction in reportable earnings, frequently opt to use the pooling of interest method when they complete a merger. Since no goodwill is created, over eager managers are able to pay outrageous prices for acquisitions with little or no accountability on the balance sheet. Since it makes no sense to have two different ways for accounting for a merger, the FASB decided they should eliminate the pooling of interest method and force all transactions to be done via the purchase method. Executives and politicians claimed this will significantly reduce the number of mergers since the new standards would cause reportable earnings to drop as soon as a company had completed an acquisition. As a concession, the FASB will no longer require goodwill to be written off unless the assets became impaired (which means it becomes clear that the goodwill is not worth what the company paid for it). The FASB s six members unanimously approved two new accounting standards on Friday July 23, 2001. Financial Accounting Statement 141 will eliminate the pooling of interest method for booking mergers. The method had been popular with dealmakers because it allowed companies to do deals at a premium without marking up their assets. These markups inflate the size of future amortization expenses and depressed reported earnings, supporters of pooling said. The FASB also passed Financial Accounting Statement 142 a closely related standard ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Personal Ethical Argument The set of personal ethical principles which I live by are comprised of a belief in absolute right and wrong, man s duty to obey God, and also his duty to love his neighbor as himself; each of these principles were formed by a Faith in God and in the Bible. The principle of absolute right and wrong was constructed through understanding that if right and wrong were contingent on man s opinions and attitudes, then both laws and guidelines would become pointless. Furthermore, God shows that right and wrong are absolute and not contingent on man when He states His warning, Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! (Isaiah 5:20). In addition to this principle, I also came to believe that man is called to obey God for several reasons: He is all powerful, He created man to give Himself glory, and He desires what is best for us. Like the two previous ethical principles, loving one s neighbor as himself, was constructed out of a faith in God and in His infallible Word. Also the credibility and power of a government are affected greatly by how they handle crimeand deal with criminals. When a crime takes place, the part that fascinates people the most is how the offender is captured and brought to justice (Nathan, 2005, p 29 34). Nowadays, nearly all serious crimes are solved with the help of one or more police investigators, police officers, witness testimonies, and the help of psychological profilers and forensics. Science has great contributions in the detection of crime and controlling criminals. The advancement in DNA identification and a variety of forensic procedures help in solving many crimes as it is portrayed in fictional television shows such as CSI. Contributions from psychology are slowly emerging to keep up with these developments from the natural sciences. There are many different ways in which psychology can contribute to police work. • 51. Sarah Mclachlan Song In The Arms Of An Angel Have you ever seen the ASPCA commercials where they show pictures of abused and neglected animals while the Sarah McLachlan song In the Arms of an Angel plays in the background? It is heart wrenching to watch and I always want to help those poor, defenseless animals. I took this opportunity to volunteer at the Town and Country Animal Shelter; a non profit, no kill shelter run entirely by volunteers serving eastern Nebraska and beyond. They are dedicated to providing a safe and caring living facility for pets in need until a loving home can be found, as well as helpful information for those wishing to rehome or adopt an animal. I chose this organization because they are a no kill shelter and they take in animals of all different sorts.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Last year I adopted a rescue dog. She is a Labrador retriever mix that was a day away from being euthanized at a Texas Animal Shelter that wasn t a no kill shelter. Her and her brothers were abandoned near birth. A lady, who was active in the rescue community, cut her vacation short and traveled to Texas to retrieve the litter. She brought them back to Nebraska where I was lucky enough to bring Daisy into my life. Though Daisy has eaten six memory foam pillows, four remote controls, the linoleum in the kitchen and parts of the carpet, I wouldn t trade her for anything. I am honored to be able to provide her with a good home and love. As discussed in the Civic Engagement video, we don t just get a free ride in our society and we have a responsibility to give back in some way (2015). Caring for a pet not only promotes a better world to live in but it teaches responsibility and compassion which can carry over into other aspects of one s life. Responsibility will assist in citizens being accountable for their actions, give a sense of duty, and help one remain just when being placed in a position of power. Compassion will allow for our citizens to be concerned with sufferings or misfortunes of others. As you can see, the simple caring for a pet has the ability to promote a moral society as well as make the world a better place to live in. I took this opportunity to add an ... • 52. King Lear Blindness Literary Analysis: King Lear The Blinding In the play, King Lear, vision and blindness are repeated allegories that relate to the characters, Lear and Gloucester. This exemplifies the theme of self knowledge and consciousness that occurs in the play. These classic allegorical is inverted in King Lear, producing a situation in which those with well working eyes cannot see what is happening around them, and those without sight are able to see clearly. What do I mean? Well, Lear is completely blind to the character of his children, while Gloucester blindness is literal. Blindness is echoed through Gloucester and Lear to explain Lear s metaphorical blindness with Gloucester s literal loss of vision. Lear is a powerful man who does not see how genuine his youngest daughter, Cordelia s love is, but believes the deceitfulness of her sisters, Goneril and Regan. Kent, one of Lear s most loyal servants, sees the two facedness of Cordelia s sisters and tries to make him look pass the show that Goneril and Regan put on and see them for who they truly are, and Lear refuses. Lear commands to Kent get Out of my sight! The play echoes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lear can see through a sympathetic lens, after having exchanged the pride for shame, revealing to us that mental blindness can be more damaging than physical blindness. While Gloucester, who willingly admits that [he] stumbled when [he] saw, is only able to see, though sightless, after he has suffered (4.1.20). Only through the physical pain of losing his sight was Gloucester able to see the truth of his sons. Unquestionably, the plots of Lear and Gloucester run similar courses. However, Shakespeare employs Gloucester s plot to clarify Lear s plot. Through the physical blinding of Gloucester, Shakespeare provides an equivalent, which contextualizes King Lear s theme of consciousness and allows Lear s own metaphorical blindness to be fully ... • 53. Parks and Recreation Districts GENERAL PARKS AND RECREATION DISTRICTS The use of special districts to administer parks and recreation services originates from a successful experiment by New York City in SSSS. The city created a commission to depoliticize the provision of parks and recreation services, which led to the development of Central Park. Following this model of success, a number of states now have some form of park district that span a range of services, including open space protection, land conservation, environmental education, and leisure activities. Local governments increasingly offload parks and recreation responsibilities to special districts because they require large capital investments and they benefit from district boundaries drawn according to public use. The impact of tax limitations and pressure on general funds also encourages development of park districts. Flickinger and Murphy () provide insight from a park director in Illinois who believes special taxing status is essential because park and recreation departments tend to take a back seat to streets, police, fire, utilities, and other mandatory services when time came to set or cut budgets and hire qualified personnel (1990, p. 153).Though parks and recreation are a common form of district, research evaluating its success is limited in both quantity and scope. The vast majority of research on parks and recreation districts is concentrated in the Midwest where they are most prevalent. The Illinois Park and Recreation ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 54. Relationship Between Jason And Medea In Jesmyn Ward s... In the book Salvage the Bones, by Jesmyn Ward, there is a parallel storyline between Esch s life and the ancient myth of Jason and Medea. Throughout the book, Esch constantly compares herself with Medea, while referring to Manny as Jason. Both Esch and Medea are forced to cope with the fact that the two people whom they loved and cherished most in the world have deceived them. As Esch s character comes of age throughout the book, her decreasing dependency on Manny helps her gain strength, just as Medeadid once she realized the depth of Jasons betrayal. Although the relationship of Jason and Medea mirrors that of Esch and Manny in some important ways, Esch s story ends better because she has the strong support of love of her family behind... Luckily for Esch, not only did she have three loving brothers, but she also had all of her brother s friends, whom looked after her like she was their little sister. After Hurricane Katrina had ended, Esch had a chat with her dad, in which he was convinced that Esch should keep the baby. This made her more confident, to know that she had not only her brother s approval, but also her father s approval (247). Esch s family and friends are accepting of her pregnancy, and they all even offer to help take care of her and the baby, in hopes that this baby will be the miracle which will bring the family together. After this conversation with her dad, Big Henry also confronts her about this conversation, which he has accidentally listened on. He asked her Who the daddy? , and when she cautiously replies with It don t have no daddy , he caringly replies to her You wrong...this baby got multiple daddies , which shows that even though he isn t a part of the family, he is implying that he will assist in raising the baby, along with her real family (254). Medea is not as fortunate as Esch. After being betrayed by Jason, she had no one to turn to, not even her own family. So, to take revenge on Jason, she resorts to murdering all of their children, and even his new bride, leaving him with no one, the way that he left her.
