COMMON REASONS
WHY STUDENTS
CANNOT PERFORM
WELL IN SCHOOL
(QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH )
BY:
JOMARIE K. MERTO
ABSTRACT
• There are several reasons why students cannot perform well in school.
It might be related to personal problems like family problems or any
other relationships-love related problems. Other students may not be
performing well academically because of internet or social media
obsessions that made the students become lazy: coming to school late,
always being absent, being late in class, and not passing projects or
assignments. This paper identities the common reasons why students
of Aurelia G. Merecido Memorial High School (AGMMHS) Cannot
perform well in school.
• The data was gathered using survey questionnaires that were given to
the students who have failing grades for the second grading in the
school year 2018-2019. The researcher found out that the top three
common reasons why students cannot perform well in school are
absences, not passing project or assignment, and tardiness. The result of
the study can be useful to all the teachers of Aurelia G. Merecido
Memorial High School for them to find a way on how to help their
students cope up in their studies.
•
CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND IT’S SCOPE
• This chapter presents the problem and the scope of
this study. The methods used in this study is also
included in this chapter.
INTRODUCTION
• In school, there are students who perform well and there are not.
Each student has the right to understand the lessons in an
efficient and effective way. There could be many factors that
may affect the performance of the students in school. It could be
the influence of the social media, family background, students’
attitude or behavior and many more. Nowadays, one of the
problems that the teachers are facing or worrying about is the
performance of their students. Study shows that students at
present are not performing well compared to the students
from the past generations.
• In the history of the Philippine education,
• students were ready to teach as early as elementary years.
The students performed well in school even at a very young
age. Unfortunately, for many reasons, students do not perform
well in school in this new generation.
• This led the researcher to conduct a study on the common
reasons why students cannot perform well in school.
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
• Many children have trouble paying attention in class at
some point in their academic career. When this happen,
especially with young students, it leaves parents
wondering why their child can’t focus-and whether he or
she could have a learning difficulty.
• Here are the 10 reasons your child is having trouble
focusing in school.
• Lack of Practice
• Does not understand the material
• Isn’t being challenged enough
• Distracted by external stimuli
• Lack of Motivation
• Mismatched learning style
• Not getting proper sleep or nutrition
• Disorganization problem
• School anxiety
• Learning difficulties
• Each of these can be addressed with the help of a tutor and
learning plan, so your child can improve his or her focus
and succeed in the classroom.
focus/, visited on January 14, 2023)
• According to Stephanie Huynh there are 6 Reasons You’re
Not Doing Well in Your Class.
• Not going to class
• Not making time to study
• Poor study habits
• Procrastinating
• Having too many distractions
• Not going the extra mile
• (https://www.hercampus.com/life/academic/6-reasons-you-
are-not-doing-well-your-classes. Visited on January 9, 2023)
• There are several causes leading to poor academic
performance in school. If these causes are not dealt with,
such students would continue to swim in poor performance.
Due to these inability factors, many students never excelled
in class: they feel relaxed taking distance position in their
classes. Some of the factors that causes students’ poor
academic performance are:
• Slothfulness
• Important timetable
• Inadequate study time
• Financial constraint
• Lack of study materials
• Broken home
• Doubt
• Lack of trust in God
• When students rely on their own ability, they are
planning to fail. More often, students experience
retarded success or poor academic performance
because they refuse to hook on the Author of Success-
GOD.
• Discouragement
• Despair
• (https://www.eduansa.com/10-causes-of-
pooracademic-perforamance-in-school-most-students-
never-admist-8/, visited on January 16, 2023)
• Statement of the problem
• To identify the common reasons why the students cannot perform
well in school.
• Specific Problem:
• The total number of Junior High School students who failed in their
class?
• The common reasons why students cannot perform well in school?
• Top three reasons why students cannot perform well in school?
• What is the implication of the study?
• Scope and Limitation
• This study focuses on the Junior High School who have failing
grades in the second grading period for the school year 2022-
2023 at Aurelia G. Merecido Memorial High School. The
specific subjects where the students failed are not included in
this study.
CHAPTER 2:
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
• Research Design
• Quantitative research is used in this study which focuses on the
common reasons why students cannot perform in class well.
• Research Subject/Respondents
• The respondents/subject of this study are the Junior High School
students who have failing grades in the second grading period for the
school year 2022-2023.
• Data Gathering Procedure
• The researcher prepared a set of survey questionnaires to be used in the
study and gave it to the school year 2022-2023.
• Analysis of data
• After gathering the data and information needed, the researcher
tabulated and consolidated the result. The common reasons why
students cannot perform in class well was then determined.
CHAPTER 3:
DISCUSSION OF RESULT AND
RECOMMENDATION

• This study comprises the presentation, analysis and interpretation of
data gathered from this study.
