SCULPTURE
History of Sculpture
The earliest known works of sculpture date from around 32,000 B.C.
Ancient peoples also created small animal and human figures carved in bone, ivory,
or stone for possible spiritual or religious purposes.
From the Latin sculpture "to carve," sculpture often is carved out of a block of
wood, stone, or other material.
Western tradition of sculpture began in Ancient Greece (800BC - 600AD), where
sculptors began to move away from creating purely spiritual items to capture the
human body in metal and stone.
Auguste Rodin is one of the more famous of the sculptors of the time, and is
considered the father of modern sculpture.

THE KISS THE THINKER
WHAT IS SCULPTURE?
 Sculpture make or represent (a form) by carving, casting, or other shaping techniques.
 Sculpture is the branch of the visual arts that operates in three dimensions .
 The three (3) traditional methods of sculpture-making are modeling, carving, or joining.
 To make a sculpture, you need to use formal elements such as space, shape,
form, tone, texture, and color.
 Modeling: Modeled sculptures are created when a soft or malleable material (such as
clay) is built up (sometimes over an armature) and shaped to create a form. Modeling is
an additive process.
Modeling Sculptures
Carving Sculpture
Carving is the act of using tools
to shape something from a
material by scraping away
portions of that material.
It involves cutting or chipping
away a shape from a mass of
stone, wood, or other hard
material.
A subtractive process whereby
material is systematically
eliminated from the outside in.
Carving Sculptures
Joining Sculpture
A technique in wood sculpture in
which parts of a figure are roughly
carved separately, then joined
together and finished.
Types Of Sculpture
1. Relief-this kind of sculpture does not have flat horizon base and the form is
projected from a flat surface. There are two types of relief:low relief or bas-relief, and
high relief. The form of a low relief projects slightly from the flat surface, in contrast
to the high relief.
2. Assemblage-this sculpture is formed by putting together materials such as objects,
pieces of paper, sponges, wood scraps, and other materials.
Types Of Sculpture
3. Welded Sculpture-creating these sculptures involve
the process of connecting sheets of metal together
by using an acetylene or electric torch.
4. Kinetic Sculpture-any medium that contains movement
perceivable by the viewer or that depends on motion for its effect.
A mobile is said to be the simplest form of kinetic sculpture.
5. Freestanding-this kind of sculpture that can independently
stand in space. It has a flat horizontal base. All its sides
contribute to the over-all form of the sculpture.
