Contractions In College Essays
Writing an essay on the topic "Contractions In College Essays" presents a unique challenge. On
one hand, the use of contractions can add a sense of informality and conversational tone to the
writing, potentially engaging the reader on a more personal level. However, in the academic
context of college essays, there's often a preference for formal language and adherence to
grammatical conventions, which typically means avoiding contractions.
Navigating this balance requires a careful consideration of the essay's audience, purpose, and
tone. Students may find themselves grappling with questions such as whether to prioritize clarity
and professionalism over a more relaxed writing style, or how to effectively integrate
contractions without detracting from the overall academic quality of the essay.
Furthermore, crafting an essay on this topic involves conducting thorough research into the
conventions of academic writing, understanding the expectations of college professors or
admissions officers, and perhaps even examining the evolving attitudes towards language use in
academic settings.
In conclusion, tackling the subject of contractions in college essays demands a nuanced approach
that acknowledges the tension between formal and informal language styles. Striking the right
balance requires careful deliberation and an understanding of the context in which the essay will
be evaluated.

Obstetric Ultrasound Research Paper
When someone hears the word ultrasound the first thing that one thinks of is
probably a baby. People think of the black and white little image that shows the
fetus for the first time. It s fascinating to think that a small machine can process out
a live image of the inside of a woman womb. Having the ability to get an image of a
growing fetuswas not always possible. It wasn t until the mid 1950 s that obstetric
ultrasound was introduced. (add reference) Before this woman had to struggle not
knowing anything about their developing child. There was no way for them to find
out the estimate age of the pregnancy, administer the growth, or the wellbeing of the
fetus. Now in the 21st century ultrasound for pregnant woman is a common
procedure they are required to get done. With this image modality, a woman can have

Kingsglaive Final Fantasy XV
Movies, a collection of scenes put together to create a coherent story, also a way
for people to express their fantasies and creativities. But from the perspective of us
viewers, movies are a shape of entertainment that we use. Personally any type of
entertainment movies, games, and so on must have this important element in itself.
It is the story. Is the story intriguing? Engaging? Interesting? These elements are
important in a movie. Today I am going to give my opinions on Kingsglaive Final
Fantasy XV beginning with summary of the story, the things that I liked, and the
things that this movie lacked. The story is told from the perspective of Nyx Ulric,
while the story itself is rather simple, an advanced nation of technology called the
Empire of Niflheim are invading every country that existed in the world of Eos. The
empire wanted to rule every land that ever... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What this movie lacks is the simplicity, the story tried to tell too many thing in the
movie resulting in confusion to the common people who watched the movie
without any prior knowledge to the world of Final Fantasy XV. The screen time for
the supporting character feels so small that we can t feel connection to the
characters that died. The motivation weren t well written either because we can feel
the lack of reason to why this character does what he does. For the conclusion,
Kingsglaive Final Fantasy XV, is a visually stunning CG movie with tons of effect
and superhuman ability concept that is a very interesting style of movie. But it
severely lacks in the coherent story, the motivation, and fail to create a connection to
the characters because of their lack of screen time, and motivation, overall this is a

Symptoms And Treatment Of Arthritis
PHYSICAL THERAPY AND ITS ROLE IN ARTHRITIS Daymara Nodarse
Florida National University Professor: Dr. Kelly Krenkel November 4, 2014
Arthritis and other such rheumatic conditions have been considered to be the
most common medical complain as well as one of the leading causes of disability
and activity limitation among the population of the United States. The rates of
arthritis diagnosis have been steadily increasing in the last 20 years. Based on
surveys and research it was determined that by the end of 1990, it was estimated
that almost 40 million people suffered from arthritis and/or were currently being
treated for it (MMWR, 2001). Further studies show that by the end of 2005, this
number had increased by almost 10 million people as reported by the National
Health Interview Survey (NHIS) and over 23 million had reported that although
they were not yet diagnosed they were dealing with chronic joint symptoms and
conditions (Atkinson, 2009). This increase indicates that approximately 800,000
people per year since 1990 have been diagnosed or treated for arthritis (MMWR).
The limitations of activities of daily living (ADLs) are one of the most common
aspects of those suffering from arthritis. It is estimated that out of over 70 million
people with arthritis, about 20 million (close to 30%) have debilitating symptoms
which may cause them decreased abilities to carry on daily activities. Arthritis has
many variations and although their prevalence is indicative of a

A Young Man s Folly Short Summary
Sadly, not all marriages have good endings. This could be caused by several
reasons, such as falling out of love, neglect, or lack of communication. The latter is
the main cause of the short story A Young Man s Folly by Susan Michalicka. The
story revolves around a modern family, where a boy tries to deal with the loss of his
father leaving him. Michalicka conveys the message of: Sometimes when you re
chasing something, you lose sight of what is really important very well through the
use of conflict, characterization and symbolism.
Conflict was used effectively in the short story to reveal the theme of the story. The
boy has an internal conflict about which parent to stay with, and because his father
left, he seemed to have favored him. He wanted him back so badly that every
night, he watches him on the six o clock news while wearing his old jackets. He
was blinded by his father s sudden departure that he forgot about what is really
important. Additionally, another development in the short story s conflict has been
used effectively to reveal the theme. When the boy went to Macdonald s to see his
father s true colors, he thought: I finished my drink quickly, thankful that he had to
be back in the studio for the news. By the time he saw his dad for the first time in a
while, he knew he was not the man he thought he was. At that moment, he also
realized that he lost sight of what he had all this time: His mother s unconditional love.

Lewis Carroll s Through the Looking Glass Essay
Lewis Carroll s Through the Looking Glass
If it was so, it might be; and if it were so, it would be; but as it isn t, it ain t. That s
logic, according to Tweedledee, a character in Lewis Carroll s famous children s work
Through the Looking Glass (Complete Works 181). Of course, Lewis Carroll is most
well known for that particular book, and maybe even more so for the first Alice
book, Alice s Adventures in Wonderland
. The connection between Lewis Carroll
and logic is less obvious for most people. In reality, Lewis Carroll is the nom de
guerre for the Reverend Charles L. Dodgson, a puttering, fussy, fastidious, didactic
bachelor, who was almost painfully humorless in his relations with the grown up

His hope that it might be of real service to the young, and be taken up, in High
Schools and in private families, as a valuable addition to their stock of healthful
mental recreations was reflected through his incorporation of such logic games
and problems in all of his children s books (qtd Braithwaite 174). His love of chess
and card games is apparent in his Alice books; each contains characters that are
portrayed by cards or pieces in a chess game. The two books, especially Through
the Looking Glass, are rich in mathematical humor. In the latter, Alice takes a
journey into the reversed world behind the Looking Glass, allowing Dodgson to
introduce not only reversals of space, but reversals of time as well this world is
abundant in left and right symmetries. The Tweedle brothers, who are mirror
images of each other, exemplify these symmetries (Gardner, Universe 3). In
addition, the White Queen s memory works both forward and backward in time
she can feel pain even before the sharp point of a pin touches her finger (3). There
is also an example of a somewhat recursive sequence of events. The reader can
easily lose himself or herself in what Gardener calls endless labyrinths. While
sleeping, the Red King dreams about Alice, who is also napping and dreaming about
the Red King. In both of these dreams, each dreams of the other, forming a pair of
infinite regresses (3). In Sylvie
Liberalism and The Industrial Revolution
During the Industrial revolution many people started to believe in the idea of
Liberalism. At times it was difficult. People were imprisoned or persecuted because
of their ideas. Riots even occurred because the government and some of the upper
class would not stand for the Liberalists new ways to improve society. Aristocrats
refused to change their ways. But through it all, liberalists persevered and brought
about one of the largest changes in society that we are still experiencing even today.
Liberalism started with the ideas of the Enlightenment. Two of these ideas were
freedom of speech and freedom of the individual, and kept growing from there.
Liberalism is the belief in a small central government and no monarchy. The
liberalists defended the ideas of the definitive rights of an individual s liberty, equality
and property. The liberalists wanted their government to be established on written
laws and a constitution based on equality.
Throughout the whole Liberalism movement, there were many men who stepped
forward to debate the idea of a free society. The aristocrats fought back saying that
the lower class could not handle taking care of them selves and were not intelligent
enough to make important decisions involving government. Others claimed that all
men were created equal and should have the same rights and be free to express their
ideas. There were pamphlets written and circulated which spread these ideas to
people who were eager to hear them. This made the
Gender Wage Gap Research
In this paper we have conducted research of the gender wage gap in Europe and the
US. The aim of this paper was to analyze the gender wage in the US and European
countries and describe the current situation regarding this issue as well as provide
some evidence that gender wage gap exists in these countries.
Nowadays the gender wage gap is an important issue that affects the status of woman
in our modern society. Since the middle of the twentieth century, women have not
only joined the economically active labor force in ever increasing numbers but also
improved their education and occupational status, and economic rewards. More
specifically, during the last decades, women have surpassed men in overall rates of
college graduation and have almost
Phenomenon And The Life Of Albert Einstein s A Beautiful
Mind
The brain is the most complicated organ in the human body. It has the important job
of controlling our motor functions, our ability to balance, and interpret information
that comes from the eyes, ears, and other sensory organs. The brain controls our
feelings, behaviors, experiences, as well as our memories and self awareness. So,
the fact that some people believe we only use about 10 20% of our brains seems
impossible. According to some, all humans can only use about ten percent of the brain
. If we were to access the remaining ninety percent, we would have remarkable,
godlike abilities. It has been said that Albert Einstein was a part of the few to harness
full usage of the brain. Throughout the existence of Hollywood, many movies and
shows discussed this curious myth.
A Beautiful Mind is a movie based on the Life of John Nash. John was a diagnosed
with paranoid schizophrenia who suffered from delusional episodes. What made him
stand out was not his mental illness, but his mathematical genius. He saw the world
in ways that no one else could. He had a true gift that no one had seen before. Early
in his career, he made an astonishing discovery that eventually led to him receiving a
Nobel Prize. His mental illnesses enabled him to grasp abstract concepts that till then
were unattainable by others.
Phenomenon, starring John Travolta, is a movie about the life of an average
mechanic in a small town; who one day transforms into a genius with telekinetic
powers. During a night
Karlie s Tutoring Goals
The goals set for Karlie were in the areas of reading comprehension, inflectional
endings, and self monitoring. To address each of these during our tutoring time, I
implemented a combination of approaches.
Inflectional endings
For the word study part of the tutoring time, we focused on inflectional endings. We
started with inflectional morphemes. Karlie s favorite review activity was fill in
the blank sentences. I would have a short excerpt from a story on the whiteboard
and she had to add the endings of particular words. The other activity we used was
building words. We would start with a basic word and then build it. She loved
competing with me towards the end of the tutoring. We both came up with the basic
word and wrote it down on a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The activities include: Analyzing text structure, creating idea maps, text annotation,
and content free question index cards.
First we focused on analyzing the text structure. At first Karlie would read a text and
then would have no idea what the topic was even about or the purpose behind the
passage. Therefore, she first learned to identify the type of text structure. We mainly
focus on expository structures: cause and effect, comparison and contrasting,
sequential, and problem(s) and solution. With each type of text structure there was
an idea map to go with it. This help Karlie to focus on the actual information that
was given and to help self monitor her understanding for that particular text. Karlie
really enjoyed the graphic aid, because she was physically able to see the different
parts of the text.
Third of strategy, Karlie learned was closed reading or text annotation. This type of
strategy help Karlie really break down difficult text into smaller manageable pieces to
understand. (She also really enjoy using a highlighter and jotting down her thoughts
on the actual paper.) Karlie, felt super smart, when she was text annotating and at the
end of the passage, she felt extremely confident in her comprehension of the text. This
strategy helped Karlie to self monitor her own

can brush any particle of foods away gently, especially in the left sides and right
sides of the retainers. Just clean your aligners thoroughly. After brushing your

You, then, dry the aligners with the clean dry towel and you can put it back on your

Drunk Driving In Texas
People in the Houston area, and throughout the state of Texas, are commonly arrested
for suspicion of drunk driving. In fact, the state s Department of Public Safety
reports that there were 89,256 people arrested for driving under the influence in 2012
alone. Often, those facing such charges choose to forego hiring an attorney, and
instead handle their legal issues on their own. Even for those facing first time
offenses, however, it may be useful to obtain legal representation.
Familiarity with the legal rules and standards
For some, drunk driving charges can be confusing. This is because the charges
people may face, and the potential penalties, vary based on a number of factors,
including their blood alcohol content levels. Unlike the average person, DUI
attorneys are typically well versed in the legal rules and standards pertaining to
alcohol related offenses. Therefore, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, they understand the factors that may compromise field sobriety tests
and breath tests. Thus, it may be helpful for drivers who have been arrested for DUI
to obtain legal representation. An attorney may question the accuracy of these types
of tests, as well as whether their rights were upheld during the traffic stops that led to
their arrests.
Dealing with the consequences
If convicted of drunk driving in Texas, people face a range of potential penalties.
According to the state s Department of Transportation, these consequences may
include jail time, a driver s license suspension, and fines and fees. With few
exceptions, DUI lawyers are familiar with these penalties, and how they are
typically imposed. Additionally, they may have knowledge of other options, which
may limit the legal repercussions people face if convicted of this offense. In some
cases, for example, an attorney may be able to negotiate for his client to be enrolled
in an alcohol treatment program in lieu of jail time.

Clockwork Orange
Clockwork Orange critique
Clockwork orange is a book that talks about a young man named Alex and his gang
that just go around committing one crime after the other in their community. Alex
later on in the story got set up by his gang members and got arrested for all the
crimes that he committed including killing people. Alex was then sentenced to
fourteen years in prison and during his time in prison; Alex got recruited for an
experiment that the government is working on to be the first prisoner to take part in
this experiment. At the end of it all, Alex went through the experiment and just like
everything else has side effects, Alex went through the experiment s effect with the
consequences of the actions that send him there in the first place.
Apart from the language being hard to understand, clockwork orange is a very
interesting book. I honestly didn t know what to expect when before I started
reading this book. But by reading this book, it had me asking a lot of questions as
such what was the government thinking putting Alex through that experiment, and
why do they want to change someone who did not ask for their help to change at
the first place. I also wanted to know why they didn t assign a supervisor for Alex to

The Poetry of Walt Whitman Essay
Walt Whitman is considered by many to be one of the greatest poets of the
nineteenth century. Whitman grew up in New York and was a member of a large
family, having eight siblings. Only four of these siblings lived to adulthood. His
father was an alcoholic, which led to Whitman becoming more like a father figure
than a brother to his siblings. Whitman quit school at the age of eleven. He then
worked as a journalist, as a carpenter, as a teacher, and as an editor before focusing
on poetry. Whitman is most well known for his book of poems, Leaves of Grass.
Whitman could not find a publisher interested in his poems; therefore, he published
them himself. Whitman rereleased this collection of poems several times, each time

Whitman deplored slavery and was even fired from his job as an editor for his
outspoken views on the subject. Whitman saw Lincoln as someone who wanted to
put an end to slavery and as someone who would put his words into action.
Whitman took a great interest in The Civil War. His brother served in the war and
Whitman volunteered as a nurse at an army hospital in Washington, D.C., where he
dressed the wounds of injured soldiers, as well as read to them, and wrote letters
for them to their families. Whitman gave lectures on President Lincoln almost up
until his own death. Whitman was greatly disturbed by the assassination of
President Lincoln and wrote these poems as a tribute to him. The most popular and
the most analyzed of these poems is When Lilacs Last in the DoorYard Bloom d.
Laurie Lanzen writes, this is a poem whose rich and sacred beauty and rapture of
tender religious passion leave it unique and solitary in literature, and will make it the
chosen and immortal hymn of death forever (Lanzen, 544 ). Even though Whitman
never mentions President Lincoln by name in the poem, according to
whitmanarchive.org, this poem was published in the fourth edition of Leaves of
Grass in 1867 under the heading President Lincoln s Burial Hymn
(whitmanarchive.org). This has come to be considered as one of the best poems ever
written by Whitman. When Lilacs Last in the
The Main Causes Of The American Revolution
After the Seven Years War, Britain began to find themselves in debt. To settle this
problem, England decided to lay heavy taxes upon the colonists. This angered the
colonists who in turn used violent protests as an active voice when they felt
unrepresented by Britain. This resulted in an over excessive amount of control from
England because of the taxes and acts imposed on the colonies. England mistreated
the colonists by not granting them basic rights, taxing them heavily, and telling them
where they could not live. The overall main cause that triggered the American
Revolutionwas the mistreatment of the American colonies by England. The first way
the colonists felt mistreated was the fact that they did not have the same basic rights
as British subjects. This was unjust because the colonists were born and raised in
Britain with those basic rights. Now that the colonists are in America, however
England mistreats them by making the colonists feel like they do not have basic
rights that they would otherwise be entitled to; if they still lived in England. We see
this when James Otis states in his letter, tis reconcilable with these principles, or to
many other fundamental maximums of the British constitution, as well as the natural
and civil rights, which by the laws of their country, all British subjects are entitled to
. The colonists believed that they should be entitled to the same rights and rules as
those residing in England, because they too are British. The
Republic Of Mali Essay
The Republic of Mali is one of Africa s largest countries, measuring about twice the
size of Texas; yet its population is proportionally small compared to its territory,
numbering to approximately 16 million and ranking 67th out of global countries (1).
A landlocked country of West Africa, Mali s borders include Algeria, Senegal,
Mauritania, CГґte d Ivoire, Guinea, Burkina Faso, and Niger. Malis main natural
resources consist of gold, phosphates, kaolin, salt, limestone, uranium, gypsum,
granite, and hydropower; the list includes iron ore, lithium, manganese, and zinc,
but not all these latter resources are exploited (1). Despite this, Mali s economy
primarily depends on profits from agriculture and fishing, both industries that rely
on the country s two largest rivers, the Niger and the SГ©nГ©gal (14). The
flooding of these rivers provides soil for agriculture; the rivers work as Mali s main
means of transporting goods as well. These rivers are especially important because
the Saharan and Sahelian regions compose most of Mali s land, and the country s
climate is primarily flat and arid. This inter tropical zone has two main seasons, the
dry season and the wet season, each accompanied with natural hazards and obstacles.
During the wet season from June to October, the southwest monsoon wind delivers
black clouds, lightning, thunder, and heavy rain.
Understanding The Concept Of Division
The purpose of this lesson is to introduce the students to the concept of division.
This will be somewhat of a review for the students who have had practice with
division in past grade levels. It has been a long time since the students have had any
practice with division, so this lesson will serve an introduction to the meaning of
division, divisionvocabulary, as well as its relationship to multiplication. Students will
be introduced to fact families as a way to show the connection between multiplication
and division. The students will be able to see the relationship between a concept they
have had a lot of practice with (multiplication), to a concept that might be new to
them (division).
Common Core State Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.B.6: Find whole number quotients of whole
numbers with up to four digit dividends and two digit divisors, using strategies based
on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between
multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations,
rectangular arrays, and/or area models.
Student Learning Objective:
Students will demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between
multiplication and division through verbal and written communication.
Goals/Objectives of Lesson: What do you hope for/expect?
Before this lesson: Students will complete a written pre assessment on division
concepts using their prior knowledge.

Promoting Media Literacy Through Early Exposure to
Technology
Promoting Media Literacy Through Early Exposure to Technology
Introduction:
The concept of media literacy is an increasingly important one in our everyday
lives. The television, the internet and mobile smartphones have allowed for the
penetration of media based technology in virtually every aspect of our collective
lifestyle. The need for and use of such technologies is inescapable if one aspires to
interact with the modern world in a social or professional manner. And for younger
media and technology users in particularly, Social Networking, blogging and a need
for smart navigation of the web have generally become normative experiences.
Therefore, it is incumbent upon us to ensure that our children our educated according
to these evolving conditions. Indeed, while questions persist as to the balance of
risks and opportunities in exposing children to certain technologies at an early age,
the discussion here will promote the thesis that properly controlled early exposure to
television and web use are important to the critical process of teaching media literacy
to young learners.
Goal:
The primary goal of the present study is to provide an overview of the value in
providing children with early exposure to evolving media technology such as
television and the internet while also offering some notes of caution that might better
inform parents and educators on how to control this exposure experience. Indeed, as
the research presented hereafter will demonstrate, there

Not because the questioned simply does not want to answer but perhaps because
they cannot answer. This theory falls into the classical utilitarianism line combined
with rational choice theory (Barkan p. 93). In researching Edward Theodore Gein,
I discovered this is one of those cases where Why never came to pass and he took to
his own grave those unanswered questions. Did these acts of crime and necrophilia
arise from the clear dysfunctional home life and upbringing or was Ed Geinsimply a
psychopath?

One must ask how much hereditary influence from his mother was a factor in Geins
rational choice theory. Nature versus the lack of nurture in the upbringing of Ed Gein
and his brother. Nonetheless, offenders still make decisions that appear rational to
them at the time they make them (Barkan, p. 96).
Theory Analysis
Ed Gein deeply desired to please his mother above all else. Augusta Gein an
archaic Lutheran controlled her sons to the extreme. Ed did attend public school
however he was an outcast and often bullied by other students. Despite the
mistreatment, he managed to do well in and enjoyed school. When Ed tried to
socialize at school this did not please his mother and anytime Ed tried to make
friends, his mother scolded him. The isolation from any other outside influences
could not have been healthy and added to his insecurities in an everyday social
lifestyle. Gein was often described as a loner, awkward and aloof. Augusta read to
both her sons daily from the Old Testament Bible from scripture usually graphic in
nature with versus dealing with death, murder and divine retribution. Gein tried to
make his mother happy but his efforts were usually met with harsh criticism and she
was rarely pleased with her sons. She often scolded them and verbally abused them
by telling them they were going to end up disappointments like their father (Woods,
1995).

are psychopaths. Potentially the

Steven Soderbergh s Erin Brockovich
Steven Soderbergh s Erin Brockovich is an autobiography of Brockovich and her
involvement in the largest monetary direct case action lawsuit within the United
States. Despite a lack of formal education and law experience, Brockovich proves to
be the key element to winning a plaintiff case against multi billion dollar industry,
Pacific Gas and Energy Company (PG E).
Often, law is recognized as a tool that ultimately provides justice; however, it also
holds the power to silence others. In this film, PG E ultimately have a greater voice
than the plaintiffs despite the mass effect of the actions of the company. The
plaintiffs reside in the quaint Californian community of Hinkley where it is
discovered that PG E are responsible for great amounts of industrial groundwater
contamination. Accordingly, Michael Asimow and Shannon Mader link Erin
Brockovich with the likes of Class Action and A Civil Action citing that the three
films depict the recurring theme of anti business slant .

Fate In Macbeth Research Paper
Fate in MacBeth The subject of fate contains much controversy, because for many the
topic relates to areas of strong, personal opinions such as religion or culture. For
centuries, people have believed in fate. Others, have denied the existence and believe
that people control their own destinies. In the 17th Century tragedy MacBeth,
William Shakespeare shows how fate can lead to unfortunate events when people
become too greedy about achieving their destiny. Thereby, Shakespeare demonstrates
that people can not overpower fate, they can only wait for the fulfillment, whether
good or bad.
People who believe in fate wonder how much a higher power predetermines their
destiny. If chance will have me king, why, chance may/crown me/Without my stir
(I.iv.157 159). Shakespeare raises questions about the extent that MacBeth
manipulates his actions. Some people would argue that MacBeth s fate includes his
homicidal actions, and his will cannot change the witches prophecy. Others contradict
that belief by saying that MacBeth s own will leads to his fate, and ultimate death,
coming sooner than predicted. Which fate and ... Show more content on

within him. He conveys an idea that possibly, the ends do not justify the means. The
guilt results from MacBeth s subconscious knowing that MacBeth should have
waited to see where fate would lead him. I am afraid to think what I have done./Look

people should not interfere with fate by using their own means. Essentially,
Shakespeare wants to point out blemishes in the Machiavellian Rule. Although the

Summary Of Multiculturalism In Rohinson Mistry s
Squatter
Many years ago, there were many people from different parts of the world
immigrated into Canada. Canadian society is set up into multicultural and nowadays
there are still people moving to Canada. Immigration can bring people adventures but
also force them to adapt a new culture and new life styles. In the book Squatter ,
written by Rohinson Mistry, writes about a man called Nariman who tells a story
about immigration. The author used the actions and dialogues from Nariman s
audience teenage boys to make foil towards the awkward situation that character
meets in his story. Furthermore, the book contains two stories and the author makes
contrast to serve as a foil Sarsh, the immigrant, as well. Mistry portrays that
immigrating is not giving everyone positive effect but make people undergoes a lot of
pressure. The text asserts a negative portrayal of Canadian multiculturalismincluding
limitations such as cultureclash, isolation and identity problems. Firstly, Sarosh
feels being isolated after moving to a society with other cultures. In the Sarosh s
story, he goes to work in Canada but he is late for eleven times in a month. Sarosh
is not able to conquer his problem of going to toilet even if he has stayed there for
up to ten years. In this way, people he works with might think he is different from
others while working and he might feel self abasement and lonely in front of this
hardship. It is shown when he answered his supervisor embarrassedly while
explaining his problem
Public Opinion In American Politics
Public opinion is often defined as the collective views, attitudes, and beliefs of the
population about a particular subject. Many suggest it is a crucial aspect of
American politics considering it affects how the country is governed, which
explains why it is such a key component in modern Political Science. There are a
series of matters that one can focus on in this field of study; nonetheless, I wanted to
take a closer look upon a topic that we did not cover in the course, and that is of my
interest. For some time now, environmental issues have been growing in prominence
to Americans since the environmental movement of the 1960s when Rachel Carson

Meaning Of Cockney Rhyming Slang
Language self evident though it may appear, the term can signify an astonishing
variety of interrelated concepts; one may perceive language as a means of
communication, while others may see it as a medium for thought or a catalyst for
social relations. Notwithstanding, the following article shall focus on language, or to
be more explicit, its basic components, namely words, as the carriers of the speaker s
emotions. Due to the fact that emotionally laden units, such as maledictions,
constitute an evergreen source of controversy, they tend to be supplanted by
miscellaneous alternative expressions; hence, the following study shall explore
perhaps the most peculiar disguise mechanism, namely CockneyRhyming Slang.

Defining Slang
Before we embark on a detailed study concerning Cockney Rhyming Slang
(henceforth CRS), we shall endeavor to define the relevant superordinate term,
namely slang. Innocuous as it may seem at first sight, the term was initially
perceived as a corruption of language, as evidenced by the preliminary data
provided by OED, according to which [slang is] the special vocabulary used by any
set of persons of a low or disreputable character; language of a low and vulgar type.
The following meaning, which apparently originated in the 18th century among
organized criminals (Ayto 2005), was soon extended to still fairly unfavorable sense
of a language of a highly colloquial type, considered as below the level of standard
educated speech [...]. Nonetheless, after the mid eighteenth century, the concept in
question has gradually started to shed the pejorative patina (Mattiello 2008);
therefore, currently many or perhaps most lexicographic works provide rather
neutrally hued definitions of slang. As an illustration, let us now

Biography of French Painter Jacques-Louis David Essay
My first choice of French painter, Jacques Louis David s work is Napoleon
Crossing the Alps. As important as the Church of the Savor on Blood was and still
is important to Russia, Jacques Louis David was important to revolutionary France.
He lived in a very turbulent time in France s history. He was a passionate supporter
of French Revolution and the idea of overthrowing the monarchy. As a French
revolution came closer to reality, David turned away from a typical classical subject
that he was trained to paint and turned his brushes and an imagination towards
depicting political events that were surrounding him and France. One of the most
iconic historical paintings has become Napoleon Crossing the Alps. The work is neo
classical, because... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, that pose Bonaparte refused, citing the fact that few people are
interested in real similarity is sufficient to express the essence of genius. David
kept similarity. The reality was less heroic Bonaparte poor rider, who crossed the
Alps on a mule wearing a gray coat and suffered from sickness during the journey
in the mountains. Here we see Napoleon mounted on a horse, a symbol of strength,
energy, a noble naturalness. The composition is dynamic: the body axis of the
Prancing Horse and the axis of the body of the rider form a strong cross. The horse
and Napoleon stand like the carved image on the background of the cold gray blue
sky and snow capped mountains. Its motion seems to be stalled, once and for all
stop. Also, David created the image of Napoleon anticipates the images of the
emperor, which will vary in every way artists romantic time writers and picturesque
graphics the Napoleonic epic. The image of Napoleon resolved in heroic terms
elated. Relying on illustrious ancestors who successfully crossed the Alps and whose
names are engraved on the rocks, Hannibal in antiquity, Charlemagne (Carolus
Magnus) to the Middle Ages, it shows that it is part of history. Napoleon Bonaparte
is lit up from the front, and pushed by the wind. The sky tormented tears; this is the
future of the country designated finger rider, Napoleon. The French army is in the
background, pushed by the French flag
Pros And Cons Of Voucher Programs Ruin Public Schools
I believe the voucher programs do ruin public schools. It s like reaching into a hen
house and grabbing the eggs you believe are good to eat. When in reality, there isn t
anything wrong with any of the eggs! It was just your perspective! The deficient
performance of the public school systems, especially in large urban areas, is a matter
of controversy and debate. In reality, boils down to simply wanting something better
for our children. Inner city schools have serious problems across the United States.
Books are often tattered, missing covers, or replaced by photocopies. Classrooms are
too small to accommodate the student bodies, and give each individual child the same
learning opportunities. The outer environments are often polluted with
Bog Bodies
This book informs the reader about bog bodies and how crucial they are to
scientists because they re a journey to the past. Bog bodies are bodies that were
deposited in a bog shortly after death, they were then naturally preserved in the
bog. To clarify why they re so important, bog bodies are usually so well preserved
that their skin, intestines and other parts of their body remain. Scientists study them
and they are able to find when they died, using radiocarbon analysis, and how they
died which is only possible it s not a skeleton because certain wounds can only be
seen on skin and not on bones. There was a section in that text that impacted me, it
was: With new tests and procedure, with determination and perhaps some luck,

Scientists look at only a few apparatus to discover additional information about the
past, they analyze fossils, artifacts, preserved bodies, and ancient architecture. With
bog bodies gone, that leaves a miniscule amount of items to study. Artifacts or items
belonging to ancient people don t provide tremendous amounts of information.
Additionally, fossils belong to a whole other category, animals and plants from
prehistoric times. Consequently, this doesn t provide information about primitive
culture and don t assist scientists seeking data on primeval civilization. Furthermore,
bog bodies are probably the most complex sources of enlightenment because they
can provide clothing, weapons, and materials of specific eras, as well as informing
us about their actions. For instance, of scientists suspected the person was sacrificed
we can conclude that whatever civilization they were from practiced human sacrifice.
In all honesty, bog bodies would be a grand loss because they re far more intriguing
than other artifacts. Considering this, bog bodies supply insight about someone s life
and it simulates reading an autobiography because you find out multitudes of
information about the person, even if they re dead. Another bog body they studied
was the Yde Girl, she was found in 1987 in the Netherlands but she had died 2,000
years earlier. While they were studying her remains, they found at she had
scoliosis, which impairs how you walk because it s a mild spinal curvature. The
toes of her right foot also signified that she might ve been slightly pigeon toed.
Scientists also noticed that she was stabbed and strangled with her on belt, which
was left on her neck after death. Perhaps she was considered undesirable in her
society because of her flaws and killed because of this. However, there are several
other ways she could ve died, it could ve been a sacrificial

The Effect of Temperature on the Starch Hydrolyzing Ability of Aspergillus Oryzae
Amylase and Bacillus Licheniformis Amylase
Lab section: U28
Abstract
The optimal temperature range of bacterial amylase, Aspergillus oryzae, were found
and compared to the optimal temperature range of fungal amylase, Bacillus
licheniformis, by testing the ability of the enzymes to hydrolyze starch after being
exposed to different temperatures. The starch hydrolyzing ability of both the
fungal amylase and the bacterial amylase was determined by mixing both
amylases with starch and placing several tubes of the respective mixtures in four
different temperatures each. Over the span of minutes, samples would be taken
from each of the tubes and would be mixed with iodine. Due to the tendency of
starch to color into a dark blackish blue when combined with iodine, the degree of
starch hydrolysis was then determined using a color coding scheme. The optimal
temperature for both Aspergillus oryzae amylase and Bacillus licheniformis
amylase was found to be within the 25 degree to 55 degree Celsius range. More
specifically, the bacterial amylase seemed to hydrolyze starch more effectively as it
spent more time exposed to the 55 degree Celsius temperature, whereas the fungal
amylase seemed to work the best mostly when it had been exposed to the 55 degree
Celsius temperature for 8 minutes. Within the resulting

Examples Of Religious Themes In The Hunchback Of Notre
Dame
In the modern era, most films are secular. They are not intended to present a
religious interpretation of life and we do not expect it from the film industry.
However, religion is a large part of the lives of most people, so it is realistic to
notice that religious references and ideas will be present in some films. William
Telford s religion and film model [1] makes it easier to depict if those underlying
religious themes are present. The movie most associated with religious themes
produced by Disney would have to be the Hunchback of Notre Dame . As stated by
Porter in the course notes [1], this film is a great fit for Telfords model. Claude
Frollo, is a deeply religious man who believes he is doing right by his religion by
taking in the seemingly unholy Quasimodo, after being judged by the Archdeacon.
He feels as though he is acting in a righteous manner when he adopts Quasimodo as
well as when he plans to commit genocide against all of the gypsies. As the plot
develops unlike Quasimodo, Frollo s belief in the church disappears, and this can
be seen in his determination to kill Esmeralda, believing if she is the source of his
lust and refuses to be with him romantically, she must die in a Hellfire . The
decisions of the main characters focused on right and wrong and good and evil
throughout the whole film, and how one will be judged solely by god, which is a
perfect parallel to this film and the very common Christian theme. Another film that
fits well with Telfords

38), also points out that conflict may be viewed as an opportunity to learn, to see
beyond our limited personal experience, to connect to others, to recognize our
potential, and to collaborate in generating new solutions to old problems.
However conflict is viewed, students who can manage their conflicts in a rational,
civil and effective way, allow teachers to devote more time to teaching rather than
resolving student disputes and/or dealing with disruptive situations, which supports
student achievement (www.knowconflict.com, 2006). Thus students who practice
effective conflict management skills, help to create a positive environment where
students can focus on learning. (www.knowconflict.com, 2006). Additionally,
exposure to conflict resolution skills by disseminating attitudes, knowledge, and
skills that deter violence throughout the school day, may result in more peaceful
resolutions of conflict and fewer episodes of violence both in and out of school
(Mauricio, Dillman Carpentier, Horan, 2005).
Items Used
The questions selected are used to not only help identify how students deal with
conflict, but how often they display unconstructive conflict management behaviors as
well. Their responses will serve as a transition into conflict management activities
aimed to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and practice necessary to
choose alternative, constructive behaviors when faced with conflict

Essay about The Faith of Mary Rowlandson
The Faith of Mary Rowlandson In her writing titled A Narrative of the Captivity
and Restauration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson , Mary lies out for the reader her
experience of being held in captivity by Indians during the King Philip s War.
Perhaps one of the most significant aspects of this writing is the glimpse that the
reader gets into Rowlandson s faith and religion. Faith was a major aspect of life in
the Colonial Period. It was of widespread belief that Godwas to be feared, and that he
was the only way to redemption (Kizer). Mary Rowlandsonwas no different, but the
extreme conditions of her captivity caused her faith to occasionally waiver. Most of

She writes And here I cannot but take notice of the strange providence of God in
preserving the heathen... (Rowlandson 450). At this point Mary cannot seem to
help but to contemplate why God is allowing the Indians to prevail in this war.
There was no denying the stark differences between the victories of the English
and the Indians. Consider the fact that the Puritans were Christians of the strictest
variety, and they did not believe that the Indians were blessed with God s grace. It
is quite understandable then that Mary would find it troubling that her people were
suffering devastating effects of this war fought by people who were not even
Christians. So she questions whether or not this is God s work. In the end she
concludes that God is not helping the Indians, rather he knows that the English are
not ready for his mercy, and her faith is restored once again (Rowlandson 450). As
Mary s story unravels, she continues to suffer long hours of work, starvation, and
separation from her family. She reads her holy bible and is constantly reminding
herself that God is with her and will see her through these trials. Her spirits are
lifted her master agrees to sell Mary to her husband, and her mistress begins the
journey with her, but before long the mistress decides not to go any further and they
turn back. Not long after, she starts to loose hope that she will ever be reunited with
her family. She becomes discouraged, and her spirit

Twins
What would it be like to have a twin? This is a question people often ponder. People
often say that they see someone that resembles someone they already know. It is
almost like dejavu. Twin comes from the German word twine meaning two together
(Nagy 1). Most people automatically think of two people who look just alike when
they hear the word twin. However, there is a lot more to twins than just looking alike.
Twins are the most common type of multiple births. Many think there are only two
types of twins, identical and fraternal; they often leave out conjoined twins. Twins are
very unique and fascinating individuals because of their similarities biologically,
physically, and psychologically.
An author from the twin s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The overall survival rate for these twins is somewhere between five and twenty five
percent (Sanders 2). This means that the majority of conjoined twins die within
twenty four hours of birth. For the few who survive the traumatic beginning, surgical
separation is often possible for conjoined twins. The average survival rate after
surgery is around forty six percent (Sanders 2). This percent depends greatly on the
location of the attachment and the organs that are shared.
There is some controversy over the separation of conjoined twins. In some cases
separation has turned into a moral issue. A prime example of how dependent one
twin is on the other is in the case of the British conjoined twins, Jodie and Mary.
Jodie was stronger and more capable than her sister. Mary was weak and was only
alive because she was attached to Jodie. However, Mary s weakness would
eventually make Jodie weak as well. The parents were burdened with a moral
dilemma, which would result with the loss of at least one child (Sanders 4). If
Mary and Jodie were separated, one would likely die. Some separations are more
difficult to complete than others. Parents of conjoined twins have to think about all
of the factors before they proceed with a separation.

Contractions In College Essays. Contractions Explained

  • 1. Contractions In College Essays Writing an essay on the topic "Contractions In College Essays" presents a unique challenge. On one hand, the use of contractions can add a sense of informality and conversational tone to the writing, potentially engaging the reader on a more personal level. However, in the academic context of college essays, there's often a preference for formal language and adherence to grammatical conventions, which typically means avoiding contractions. Navigating this balance requires a careful consideration of the essay's audience, purpose, and tone. Students may find themselves grappling with questions such as whether to prioritize clarity and professionalism over a more relaxed writing style, or how to effectively integrate contractions without detracting from the overall academic quality of the essay. Furthermore, crafting an essay on this topic involves conducting thorough research into the conventions of academic writing, understanding the expectations of college professors or admissions officers, and perhaps even examining the evolving attitudes towards language use in academic settings. In conclusion, tackling the subject of contractions in college essays demands a nuanced approach that acknowledges the tension between formal and informal language styles. Striking the right balance requires careful deliberation and an understanding of the context in which the essay will be evaluated. Similar essays and much more can be ordered on HelpWriting.net. But from the perspective of us viewers, movies are a shape of entertainment that we use. Personally any type of entertainment movies, games, and so on must have this important element in itself. It is the story. Is the story intriguing? Engaging? Interesting? These elements are important in a movie. Today I am going to give my opinions on Kingsglaive Final Fantasy XV beginning with summary of the story, the things that I liked, and the things that this movie lacked. Symptoms And Treatment Of Arthritis PHYSICAL THERAPY AND ITS ROLE IN ARTHRITIS Daymara Nodarse Florida National University Professor: Dr. Kelly Krenkel November 4, 2014 Arthritis and other such rheumatic conditions have been considered to be the most common medical complain as well as one of the leading causes of disability and activity limitation among the population of the United States. The rates of arthritis diagnosis have been steadily increasing in the last 20 years. Based on surveys and research it was determined that by the end of 1990, it was estimated that almost 40 million people suffered from arthritis and/or were currently being treated for it (MMWR, 2001). Further studies show that by the end of 2005, this number had increased by almost 10 million people as reported by the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) and over 23 million had reported that although they were not yet diagnosed they were dealing with chronic joint symptoms and conditions (Atkinson, 2009). • 6. A Young Man s Folly Short Summary Sadly, not all marriages have good endings. This could be caused by several reasons, such as falling out of love, neglect, or lack of communication. The latter is the main cause of the short story A Young Man s Folly by Susan Michalicka. The story revolves around a modern family, where a boy tries to deal with the loss of his father leaving him. Michalicka conveys the message of: Sometimes when you re chasing something, you lose sight of what is really important very well through the use of conflict, characterization and symbolism. Conflict was used effectively in the short story to reveal the theme of the story. The boy has an internal conflict about which parent to stay with, and because his father left, he seemed to have favored him. He wanted him back so badly that every night, he watches him on the six o clock news while wearing his old jackets. He was blinded by his father s sudden departure that he forgot about what is really important. Additionally, another development in the short story s conflict has been used effectively to reveal the theme. When the boy went to Macdonald s to see his father s true colors, he thought: I finished my drink quickly, thankful that he had to be back in the studio for the news. By the time he saw his dad for the first time in a while, he knew he was not the man he thought he was. At that moment, he also realized that he lost sight of what he had all this time: His mother s unconditional love. If it wasn t for the characterization of

Of course, Lewis Carroll is most well known for that particular book, and maybe even more so for the first Alice book, Alice s Adventures in Wonderland . His hope that it might be of real service to the young, and be taken up, in High Schools and in private families, as a valuable addition to their stock of healthful mental recreations was reflected through his incorporation of such logic games and problems in all of his children s books (qtd Braithwaite 174). His love of chess and card games is apparent in his Alice books; each contains characters that are portrayed by cards or pieces in a chess game. The two books, especially Through the Looking Glass, are rich in mathematical humor. In the latter, Alice takes a journey into the reversed world behind the Looking Glass, allowing Dodgson to introduce not only reversals of space, but reversals of time as well this world is abundant in left and right symmetries. The Tweedle brothers, who are mirror images of each other, exemplify these symmetries (Gardner, Universe 3). In addition, the White Queen s memory works both forward and backward in time she can feel pain even before the sharp point of a pin touches her finger (3). Aristocrats refused to change their ways. But through it all, liberalists persevered and brought about one of the largest changes in society that we are still experiencing even today. Liberalism started with the ideas of the Enlightenment. Two of these ideas were freedom of speech and freedom of the individual, and kept growing from there. Liberalism is the belief in a small central government and no monarchy. The liberalists defended the ideas of the definitive rights of an individual s liberty, equality and property. The liberalists wanted their government to be established on written laws and a constitution based on equality. Throughout the whole Liberalism movement, there were many men who stepped forward to debate the idea of a free society. The aristocrats fought back saying that the lower class could not handle taking care of them selves and were not intelligent enough to make important decisions involving government. Others claimed that all men were created equal and should have the same rights and be free to express their ideas. There were pamphlets written and circulated which spread these ideas to people who were eager to hear them. This made the

This angered the colonists who in turn used violent protests as an active voice when they felt unrepresented by Britain. This resulted in an over excessive amount of control from England because of the taxes and acts imposed on the colonies. England mistreated the colonists by not granting them basic rights, taxing them heavily, and telling them where they could not live. The overall main cause that triggered the American Revolutionwas the mistreatment of the American colonies by England. The first way the colonists felt mistreated was the fact that they did not have the same basic rights as British subjects. This was unjust because the colonists were born and raised in Britain with those basic rights. Now that the colonists are in America, however England mistreats them by making the colonists feel like they do not have basic rights that they would otherwise be entitled to; if they still lived in England. We see this when James Otis states in his letter, tis reconcilable with these principles, or to many other fundamental maximums of the British constitution, as well as the natural and civil rights, which by the laws of their country, all British subjects are entitled to . The colonists believed that they should be entitled to the same rights and rules as those residing in England, because they too are British. The

In the 17th Century tragedy MacBeth, William Shakespeare shows how fate can lead to unfortunate events when people become too greedy about achieving their destiny. Thereby, Shakespeare demonstrates that people can not overpower fate, they can only wait for the fulfillment, whether good or bad. People who believe in fate wonder how much a higher power predetermines their destiny. If chance will have me king, why, chance may/crown me/Without my stir (I.iv.157 159). Shakespeare raises questions about the extent that MacBeth manipulates his actions. Some people would argue that MacBeth s fate includes his homicidal actions, and his will cannot change the witches prophecy. Others contradict that belief by saying that MacBeth s own will leads to his fate, and ultimate death, coming sooner than predicted. Which fate and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thou marshal st me the way that I was going,/And such an instrument I was to use (II.i.54 55). Shakespeare uses MacBeth s hallucination to show the lingering guilt within him. He conveys an idea that possibly, the ends do not justify the means. The guilt results from MacBeth s subconscious knowing that MacBeth should have waited to see where fate would lead him. I am afraid to think what I have done./Look on t again I dare not (II.ii.66 67). Shakespeare creates feelings of remorse to show that people should not interfere with fate by using their own means. Essentially, Shakespeare wants to point out blemishes in the Machiavellian Rule. Although the means can speed up the end, unrighteous actions lead to a guilt

Meaning Of Cockney Rhyming Slang Language self evident though it may appear, the term can signify an astonishing variety of interrelated concepts; one may perceive language as a means of communication, while others may see it as a medium for thought or a catalyst for social relations. Notwithstanding, the following article shall focus on language, or to be more explicit, its basic components, namely words, as the carriers of the speaker s emotions. The following meaning, which apparently originated in the 18th century among organized criminals (Ayto 2005), was soon extended to still fairly unfavorable sense of a language of a highly colloquial type, considered as below the level of standard educated speech [...]. Nonetheless, after the mid eighteenth century, the concept in question has gradually started to shed the pejorative patina (Mattiello 2008); therefore, currently many or perhaps most lexicographic works provide rather neutrally hued definitions of slang. As a French revolution came closer to reality, David turned away from a typical classical subject that he was trained to paint and turned his brushes and an imagination towards depicting political events that were surrounding him and France. Scientists study them and they are able to find when they died, using radiocarbon analysis, and how they died which is only possible it s not a skeleton because certain wounds can only be seen on skin and not on bones. Scientists look at only a few apparatus to discover additional information about the past, they analyze fossils, artifacts, preserved bodies, and ancient architecture. With bog bodies gone, that leaves a miniscule amount of items to study. Artifacts or items belonging to ancient people don t provide tremendous amounts of information. Additionally, fossils belong to a whole other category, animals and plants from prehistoric times. Consequently, this doesn t provide information about primitive culture and don t assist scientists seeking data on primeval civilization. Furthermore, bog bodies are probably the most complex sources of enlightenment because they can provide clothing, weapons, and materials of specific eras, as well as informing us about their actions. For instance, of scientists suspected the person was sacrificed we can conclude that whatever civilization they were from practiced human sacrifice. In all honesty, bog bodies would be a grand loss because they re far more intriguing than other artifacts. Naily Castaneda 5000755 Lab partners: Belen Caballero Jesse Raya Jonah Wichterich The Effect of Temperature on the Starch Hydrolyzing Ability of Aspergillus Oryzae Amylase and Bacillus Licheniformis Amylase Lab section: U28 Abstract The optimal temperature range of bacterial amylase, Aspergillus oryzae, were found and compared to the optimal temperature range of fungal amylase, Bacillus licheniformis, by testing the ability of the enzymes to hydrolyze starch after being exposed to different temperatures. The starch hydrolyzing ability of both the fungal amylase and the bacterial amylase was determined by mixing both amylases with starch and placing several tubes of the respective mixtures in four different temperatures each. Over the span of minutes, samples would be taken from each of the tubes and would be mixed with iodine. Due to the tendency of starch to color into a dark blackish blue when combined with iodine, the degree of starch hydrolysis was then determined using a color coding scheme. The optimal temperature for both Aspergillus oryzae amylase and Bacillus licheniformis amylase was found to be within the 25 degree to 55 degree Celsius range. More specifically, the bacterial amylase seemed to hydrolyze starch more effectively as it spent more time exposed to the 55 degree Celsius temperature, whereas the fungal amylase seemed to work the best mostly when it had been exposed to the 55 degree Celsius temperature for 8 minutes. Within the resulting

They are not intended to present a religious interpretation of life and we do not expect it from the film industry. However, religion is a large part of the lives of most people, so it is realistic to notice that religious references and ideas will be present in some films. William Telford s religion and film model [1] makes it easier to depict if those underlying religious themes are present. The movie most associated with religious themes produced by Disney would have to be the Hunchback of Notre Dame . As stated by Porter in the course notes [1], this film is a great fit for Telfords model. Claude Frollo, is a deeply religious man who believes he is doing right by his religion by taking in the seemingly unholy Quasimodo, after being judged by the Archdeacon. He feels as though he is acting in a righteous manner when he adopts Quasimodo as well as when he plans to commit genocide against all of the gypsies. As the plot develops unlike Quasimodo, Frollo s belief in the church disappears, and this can be seen in his determination to kill Esmeralda, believing if she is the source of his lust and refuses to be with him romantically, she must die in a Hellfire . The decisions of the main characters focused on right and wrong and good and evil throughout the whole film, and how one will be judged solely by god, which is a perfect parallel to this film and the very common Christian theme. Another film that fits well with Telfords

However conflict is viewed, students who can manage their conflicts in a rational, civil and effective way, allow teachers to devote more time to teaching rather than resolving student disputes and/or dealing with disruptive situations, which supports student achievement (www.knowconflict.com, 2006). Thus students who practice effective conflict management skills, help to create a positive environment where students can focus on learning. (www.knowconflict.com, 2006). Additionally, exposure to conflict resolution skills by disseminating attitudes, knowledge, and skills that deter violence throughout the school day, may result in more peaceful resolutions of conflict and fewer episodes of violence both in and out of school (Mauricio, Dillman Carpentier, Horan, 2005). Perhaps one of the most significant aspects of this writing is the glimpse that the reader gets into Rowlandson s faith and religion. Faith was a major aspect of life in the Colonial Period. It was of widespread belief that Godwas to be feared, and that he was the only way to redemption (Kizer). She writes And here I cannot but take notice of the strange providence of God in preserving the heathen... (Rowlandson 450). At this point Mary cannot seem to help but to contemplate why God is allowing the Indians to prevail in this war. There was no denying the stark differences between the victories of the English and the Indians. Consider the fact that the Puritans were Christians of the strictest variety, and they did not believe that the Indians were blessed with God s grace. It is quite understandable then that Mary would find it troubling that her people were suffering devastating effects of this war fought by people who were not even Christians. So she questions whether or not this is God s work. In the end she concludes that God is not helping the Indians, rather he knows that the English are not ready for his mercy, and her faith is restored once again (Rowlandson 450). As Mary s story unravels, she continues to suffer long hours of work, starvation, and separation from her family. She reads her holy bible and is constantly reminding herself that God is with her and will see her through these trials. Her spirits are lifted her master agrees to sell Mary to her husband, and her mistress begins the journey with her, but before long the mistress decides not to go any further and they turn back. Not long after, she starts to loose hope that she will ever be reunited with her family. She becomes discouraged, and her spirit

Twin comes from the German word twine meaning two together (Nagy 1). Most people automatically think of two people who look just alike when they hear the word twin. However, there is a lot more to twins than just looking alike. Twins are the most common type of multiple births. Many think there are only two types of twins, identical and fraternal; they often leave out conjoined twins. The overall survival rate for these twins is somewhere between five and twenty five percent (Sanders 2). This means that the majority of conjoined twins die within twenty four hours of birth. For the few who survive the traumatic beginning, surgical separation is often possible for conjoined twins. The average survival rate after surgery is around forty six percent (Sanders 2). This percent depends greatly on the location of the attachment and the organs that are shared. There is some controversy over the separation of conjoined twins. In some cases separation has turned into a moral issue. A prime example of how dependent one twin is on the other is in the case of the British conjoined twins, Jodie and Mary. Jodie was stronger and more capable than her sister. Mary was weak and was only alive because she was attached to Jodie. However, Mary s weakness would eventually make Jodie weak as well. The parents were burdened with a moral dilemma, which would result with the loss of at least one child (Sanders 4). If Mary and Jodie were separated, one would likely die. Some separations are more difficult to complete than others. Parents of conjoined twins have to think about all of the factors before they proceed with a separation. There are also factors to think about after separation. If both twins survive the separation, they may still need an enormous amount of medical treatment throughout their life. In addition to medical treatment, they will probably
