Liberi A Cultural Overview
Liberia: A Cultural Overview Liberia s political system and history has been strongly based and
influenced on American and English common law. This is due in part to Liberia s initial
colonization of freed American slaves starting around 1820. Initially 86 immigrants, also known as
Americo Liberians settled in the now named Monrovia, named after President James Monroe. In
the following years thousands more freed slaves and free African Americans resettled by a
campaign created by the American Colonization Society. The True Whig Party ruled the country
and their first President was Joseph Jenkins Roberts who was born and raised in America. The
government was styled on that of the United States and the indigenous population were restricted
their voting rights by the Americo Liberian elite. The True Whig Party dominated all sectors of
Liberiafrom independence in 1847 until April of 1980, when Liberian Master Sergeant Samuel K.
Doe, from the Krahn ethnic group, seized power in a coup d etat. To put a formal end to control by
the Americo Liberian political domination formation of The People s Redemption Council was
necessary. The Doe government saw increased human rights abuses, corruption, and ethnic tensions
and the standard of living in Liberia continued to deteriorate. Doe ensured that he retained close
relations with America; he met twice with President Ronald Reagan and enjoyed considerable
financial support from the United States. From 1989 to 2003,

Just Justice For All Analysis
In the lecture With Justice for All? by Bryan Stevenson, he discusses his book Just Mercy as
well as allows the audience to question what mercy is in America. Stevenson began the lecture
by discussing how the audience has the capability to create more change, justice, and opportunity
in America. Stevenson spoke about the 5 things required in order to be able to make more
change for the better. The first thing that we must be able to do is that we have to be concerned
about our identity. We can call ourselves students and lawyers, however, it doesn t describe who
we are. The adjectives used allow us to have our identity. We should be saying we are active and
kind students, teachers, lawyers etc. The next thing that must be done in order to... Show more

In the recent election, one of the tactics that have been used is this idea of fear and the
presidential candidates have been using fear when discussing the policies and trying to
convince the voters as to why they should be voting for them. They use the idea of fear and how
they, as presidents, will be able to help solve the issues and fears in question. This idea of politics
of fear (Salahuddin) also tied to the lecture and how the legal system works. The system is run
on the fear and racial prejudice that leads to decisions being made that are unequal and unjust.
One of the biggest issues that in order to look at changes that need to be done and be able to
make changes, we must not run on fear and anger. Another topic discussed in both the lecture
and the talk was the idea of racial prejudice. People of color and African Americans are victims of
many different hatred and prejudice and based on presumptions. (Salahuddin) Black and browns,
in America, are presumed dangerous leading to them being burdened . (Stevenson) It ties to what
we talked about in class and the different examples of how blacks face so many different burdens
and are faced with difficulties in doing tasks that white people do on a normal

Essay on Nature in Context vs. Nature out of Context
Nature in Context vs. Nature out of Context Nature has long been the focus of many an author s
work, whether it is expressed through poetry, short stories, or any other type of literary creation.
Authors have been given an endless supply of pictures and descriptions because of nature s
infinite splendor that can be vividly reproduced through words. It is because of this fact that often
a reader is faced with two different approaches to the way nature is portrayed. Some authors tend
to look at nature from a more extensive perspective as in William Wordsworth s I wandered Lonely
as a Cloud. While some authors tend to focus more on individual aspects of nature and are able to
captivate the reader with their intimate portrayals of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But the second line in this poem, sometimes whoever seeks abroad may find, was particularly
interesting to me for I relate to its feelings of optimism and accord. In a way it also seems that
the second stanza is heavy with sleepiness, with the exception of the last four lines, as displayed
in the above quote with words like the winnowing wind , Drows d , and sound asleep . The four
last lines of the second stanza, as I mentioned earlier, describes Autumn in pure action, Steady thy
laden head across a brook; /Or by a cider press, with patient look, by bringing out the true active
lifestyle of what nature truly is. Again, through his imagination Keats is able to embark upon what
he is really seeing. The purpose of the poem becomes clear in the final stanza, and in the warmth of
the second line, Where are the songs of spring? Ay, where are they? /Think not of them, Thou hast
thy music too, where Keats sheds light on the idea that that everything has a purpose. It would
appear that Autumn, the season which robs us of the warmth of summer, where the leaves come
tumbling from the trees, the season that prepares the world for a dark and cold winter ahead, has its
purpose too. What would spring be without death, light without dark, but indeed it appears that
Keats is thinking of life without death. In this poem, Keats is able to focus in on the beauty and
splendid ness of autumn in order to demonstrate that everything will change according

Lake Colac Is Part Of The Corangamite Basin
Lake Colac is part of the Corangamite basin that was formed in the early Pleistocene and Tertiary
during the volcanic movement. Due to the volcanic commotion it had blocked the natural
outflow of Lake Colac s two tributaries, Dean s Creek and Barongarook Creek causing the rivers
to flow into the basin leaving muddy deposits (Williams 1992). Wind has also caused crescent
shaped dunes to form creating many shallow lakes and wetlands. The surface area of Lake Colac
is about 3,000 hectares and has the circumference of about 33km, which is relatively shallow
with an average depth of no more than 2.5 metres (Colac Otway Shire Council, 2002a). It has
very different areas of vegetation including the Otway hinterland forests, volcanic plains,
farmland and a number of urban settlements (Management of Environmental Quality 2005). It
has also been used by the Aboriginal people that goes back to at least 7000 calBP where they
could cross the lake in times of drought and the use of eel traps and remains of twenty two
skeleton remains from the area are held in the Museum of Victoria (McNiven 1998). The location
of Lake Colac is popular for fishing and water activities, also is an important habitat area providing
feeding, resting and breeding coverage for over 20 species of waterbirds, including a huge number
of migratory species that are listed under the agreement of Japan, Australia and China protection of

Greek, India, and China Contributions
Today, our lives are based on technology. We have computers, iPods, phones, televisions, etc... but,
what about the unnoticeable contributions that affect us more than we could imagine. The screw
for example. The screw is everywhere around us. In fact its in your computers, televisions, iPods,
and phones. The screw holds your more significant objects together in place. Like the screw the
contributions of Greece, India, and China all have an impact on us today but it goes unnoticeable.
All of these civilizations were created around the same time and fell around the same time period.
Even though all these civilizations took place in around the same time period they all have very
different impacts on the world we have today. In the times of Ancient Greece, India, and China
there were numerous contributions that influenced us today, but, Greece had more contributions in
math and medicinethat lead them to have the greatest overall impact on us today. Greece has
contributed a lot to society today in the medical field and in mathematics. Starting with medicine,
the modern day medical symbol was derived from Greece. The god Asclepius (the god of health)
thought snakes were holy so he created the medical symbol we know of today of a staff coiled
around a staff with wings (Michael and Woods, Ancient medicine: from sorcery to surgery, 56).

The Progression Of Sid Vicious And Nancy Spungen s...
When looking into the progression of Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen s relationship, it is not a
wonder why it ended in death. Looking in from the outside, with the media as your only source
of information, you start to make assumptions about the musician and his girlfriend. It isn t until
you dig deeper into their separate pasts, that you can really see the full picture. It becomes clear
that love may have never been a part of their lives, but a relationship of need. A place where a
mentally disturbed girl and a lonely man can escape from everything. From the very beginning
Nancy was not like other children. From the moment she was born she was known for her
temper; started with screaming and moved to vicious tempura tantrums. By time she was in
elementary school she continually focused her rage at her younger sister and threatened to stab
her baby sitter with a pair of scissors. Later in her elementary school years she tried to beat her
psychiatrist when the woman belittled her actions as being nothing but a stunt to get attention.
She was soon expelled from her public elementary school for ditching and was placed into a
private school, which led to her running away and cutting her wrists in an attempt to commit
suicide. By time she was 15 she was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Before reaching collage she
was well known for being incredibly intelligent. So much in fact she scored very high on an
intelligence test and skipped 3rd grade. Despite her tainted record, she

Michael Phelps Research Paper
Swimming is an ancient activity that has taken place since both water and humans were on the
earth. Around 10,000 years ago humans found prehistoric evidence of recreational swimming on
Stone Age paintings. Books such as the Iliad, The Odyssey and the bible all include references of
swimming. Around 1830 in England swimmingstarted to become a popular recreational activity. By
the time 1837 rolled around the National Swimming Society held six different competitions around
London.
In 1875 captain Matthew Webb was the first person to swim the English Channel. He completed
the swim using the breaststroke technique for 21.26 miles. This record would not be broken for
another 36 years. In the year 1896 men s swimming became part of the first modern Olympic Games

people did not know how to swim. White people made up stories that colored people could not

pools to all people.
The Olympic athlete I chose was Michael Phelps. I chose Michael Phelps because he is one of
the top swimmers on the world and he was won many medals. Michael Fred Phelps was born on
June 30, 1985. He was raised by his mother Debbie and his father Michael in Towson, Maryland.
At the age of 7 Phelps began swimming. Phelps began to train at the North Baltimore Aquatic
Club. His coach was Bob Bowman. At a young age Phelps was diagnosed with ADHD. When he
was only fifteen years old he broke the world record for the 200 meter butterfly. In the Olympics,

The Most Hated Family in America Essay examples
The Most Hated Family In America The topic of homosexuality has been a very hot topic over
the past several decades. The term homosexuality can be defined as the sexual desire or behavior
towards a person or persons of one s own sex ( Homosexuality ). There are many people who
either agree or disagree with the aspect of homosexuality, and there are others who are indifferent.
Many Christian churches around the world, especially in the United States, have stated their
opinion against homosexuality. They based their beliefs in the verses in 1st Corinthians 6: 9 10,
which says, Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not

If one reads this manual, especially how the Baptists base their doctrine, one would see that the
Westboro Baptist Church is wrong in many aspects, to such extent that they should not be called
Baptists. The Westboro Baptist Church s main purpose is to promote hate; hate towards America,
towards the world, and towards anybody who lives in this world and accepts homosexuality, or
fags as they call them, into our society ( God Hates Fags ). They use picketing as a source to
express their opinion is a very hateful way, to the point that it makes any person passing by
uncomfortable and even express their anger towards them. In The Most Hated Family In America
film, there are several instances where one can see the Phelps family discouraging the population
by yelling that they are all going to hell, and that God hates this world for accepting the ways of
the world. They don t care if the person is Christian or not, according to them, the world has no
salvation (Theroux). In page 62 of the Baptist manual, it states that Baptist should believe in
justification , because it includes that pardon of sin (Hiscox). This is clear evidence that the
Westboro church does not go by the manual of Baptists. The most horrifying thing that these people
do is to picket at soldier funerals. With a smile on their faces and joy in their hearts, they stand in a
corner shouting,

Gender, Gender And Gender Bias
Language and gender has become an increasingly popular topic of study over recent decades,
most likely due to the second wave of feminism in the 1960s and 70s. This can also be seen in the
fact that goals of linguistic studies shifted at this point, to not just look at grammatical differences
between males and females but to examine sexism and genderbias in language. The wording of
such studies becomes increasingly important in the modern era, as gender is now recognised as a
socially constructed concept of masculine and feminine features, based on biological sex but not
limited to that. Simone de Beauvoir (1952) believed that we gradually become more masculine or
feminine but we are not inherently gendered.
Language and gender was not developed as a serious subfield until the 1975 publication of Robin
Lakoff s Language and Woman s Place. Lakoff argued that women use particular language
features in order to deny themselves means of strong expression, which are stereotypically
reserved for males. These features include shows of uncertainty, such as hedging and indirect
requests. Indirect requests include making a statement in hope that it will elicit the desired
response from someone else without openly asking. Women s speech seems... to contain more
instances of well , y know ... words that convey the sense that the speaker is uncertain about what
[she] is saying (Lakoff, 1975:53). Dale Spender (1980) talks about gender power relations, but
disagrees with Lakoff as she

Planning, training, setting and achieving goals are all key to improvement or success of a business
(Henkoff 5). ISO 9000 makes sure a company is doing what it says it is doing and helps them do
it. However, that doesn t mean it is running the company and telling it what to do (USAToday 1).
The business is still an independent business it is just getting advice on how to manufacture
things and earning a certificate that is appealing to customers. However, that also doesn t mean
that ISO 9000 promises the quality of a company s product will be great; Richard Buerow,
director of corporate quality at Motorola states: With ISO 900 you can still have terrible
processes and products. You can certify a manufacturer that makes life jackets from concrete, as
long as those jackets are made according to the documented procedures and the company
provides the next of kin with instructions on how to complain about defects. That s absurd
(Henkoff 3). Its steps and procedures will help a manufacturer s product become better
produced. ISO 9001, 2 3 ISO 9000 is divided into three equally ranked quality systems which a
business can chooses by what quality system will cover their business process (iso online). ISO
9001 is for a business whose processes range from design and development, to production,

The Haymarket Affair
The Haymarket Affair
For many, America is not just the country they happen to live in but also it is a place of
freedoms, liberties and independencies and even a refuge for some people. In 1886 though, a
group of people attempted to share their opinion in Haymarket Square, Chicago, which led to a
dangerous riot and a series of trials with convictions and executions. Throughout the affair, innocent
lives were lost, people were wrongly accused, and the judicial system was revealed as flawed.
Throughout the trial, Constitutional rights were overlooked in the name of prejudice and because
of fear, just to please the public. The Haymarket Affairinvolved a violent riot caused by
overbearing police officers; it also involved unfair trials ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At the close of trial proceedings, the judge informed the jury that they could find the eight
accused to be guilty even if the crime was committed by someone who was not charged. He also
said that it was not necessary for the state to know the identity of the bomber or to prove that the
bomber had read any of the articles or poster of the charged anarchists. Though the judge,
prosecutor, and jury can be considered misguided in their bias and actions of injustice, some of the
witnesses against the accused are widely acknowledged as liars. In comparison to the eyewitnesses
of the defendants, every part of their details went against those of the witnesses of the police.
Though the defendants faced prejudice and discrimination, they kept on with their cases and
appeals until the verdicts were determined. The attorneys of the accused were Black and Swett.
Along with the allegation that Grinnell s witnesses were lying, the defending lawyers said that
none of the eight had intended for any form violence and they even offered proof that some of the
accused were not even near Haymarket Square on May 4th. Furthermore along with their apparent
innocence, six of the eight were not present when the bomb went off, and the two that were there,
Spies and Samuel Fielden were both in plain view of the crowd and police. Despite the logic of
the defendant s case, passion and prejudice led the jury to conclude that the bombing was a direct
result of a deliberate conspiracy.

Lady Lazarus, by Sylvia Plath
Lady Lazarus is a poem by Sylvia Plath, written in 1962 shortly before her death in early 1963,
and published posthumously by her husband, poet Ted Hughes, in 1965 in the collected volume
Ariel. Lady Lazarus is a poem about suicide as a rebirth, and was in part inspired by Plath s own
life and draws heavily on Plath s lifelong struggle with bipolar depression and suicidal feelings,
and uses holocaust imagery to paint a bleak portrait of suicideand hopelessness. Sylvia Plath was
born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1932 to a German immigrant college professor and his graduate
student turned wife. The early years of Plath s life were comfortable, spending much of her time
near the seaside. After losing her father in 1940, Plath and her... Show more content on

The title of the poem, Lady Lazarus, is a reference to the biblical story of Lazarus of Bethany, a
man brought back to life by Christ as a demonstration of his divine power to non believing
onlookers. (The Holy Bible, King James Version, John 1 44.) The speaker in the poem compares
her near death experience and suicide attempts to a resurrection or rebirth, such as in the story
of Lazarus. In the first stanza the speaker declares that every ten years she dies, drawing an eerie
parallel to Plath s own life. At eight, Plath lost her father and this sparked an immense resentment
towards him and strong feelings of alienation throughout the rest of her life; this was her first
death, and the speaker declares this death an accident in stanza 12, lines 2 3. Her second death
was intentional. (stanza 13) This death came at age twenty when Plath attempted suicide for the
first time. The speaker in the poem says that this death was meant to be permanent and she did not
wish to be reborn. (stanza 13, line 2.) The third and final death was Plath s suicide at age thirty,
only a few months after Lady Lazarus was written. In a way, Plath hinted at her worsening mental
state through this work. In stanza seven, the speaker says she is only thirty, as was Plath at the time
she wrote this poem. The speaker alludes to coming suicide attempts by comparing herself to a cat
with nine lives, indicating that

Philip Kotler As The Father Of Modern Marketing
Philip Kotler obituary
A respected American author who is globally known to be regarded as the Father of Modern
Marketing
Philip Kotler, who has died aged 86, dedicated most of his professional life to publishing books
and articles in marketing, his work introduced new concepts in the field of marketing such as
megamarketing, demarketing, turbomarketing and synchromarketing. He strongly believes that the
marketing management is beyond price theory and integrated the dynamics of innovation,
distribution and promotion systems to analyze, explain and predict economic outcomes.
Throughout his career, Philip Kotler has been a consultant to several big companies in the areas of
marketing strategy, planning, organization and international marketing. He presented many
seminars on marketing developments and concepts in large international cities across the globe.
Kotler s parents migrated from Ukraine to Chicago in 1917, where Kotler was born on 1931. He
studied at DePaul University for two years and was accepted without a bachelor s degree into the

Pros And Cons Of The Executive Branch
...Power over any one thing, if not limited by some obvious and precise affinity, may amount to a
Power over every other. James madison. James Madison s ideas about the American Constitution
(considering he wrote the first draft) clearly reflects his opinion about how one branch should not
have more power than another, and if one happens to be able to exploit a specific power, or given
to much power; it will have power over everything. This is crucial to the inner workings of America
s government because without Branches constantly checking each other, America is just a good as
a Monarchy.
The executive branch has the ability to check the other branches as well as it being constantly
checked on. The president, a major part of the executive branch, has the power to pardon, or
essentially forgive someone, for an offense. Around the time when Richard M. Nixon was

My Lifetime Intrigue With Tattoos Essay
Introduction
My lifetime intrigue with tattoos has led me to research the history and culture surrounding
tattooing. I have already collected several pieces, both small and large, on my body and am
endlessly curious about the culture of body modification. The objective of my research is to
discover the ancient history of body art, the social and cultural significances and stigmas of tattoos,
as well as to discover the process of getting a custom tattoo. After defining my objectives and doing
preliminary research, I have chosen to analyze and interpret the existing research about this subject
through a conceptual framework. This framework indicates that tattooing is an ancient art form
practiced around the world for many different reasons and has a diverse cultural and social
significance in today s societies. This framework was chosen as a result of preliminary reading and
analyzing existing research about the history and culture of tattooing. This existing research has
shown that the practice of tattooing dates back to ancient civilizations, as well as the different
perceptions of body art in current global societies, both negative and positive. My research will
consist of three topics; ancient tattooing history, the recent history and the emergence of western
practice, and the social and cultural significance and stigmas in global societies today.

Chastity In The Canterbury Tales
Through the union of thirty four pilgrims on their journey to Canterbury for absolution, Chaucer
pens the tales and interactions of the pilgrims of various ranks and ecclesiastic affiliation. He
negotiates a social hierarchy different from that of the current governing structure through his acute
understanding of the behaviors, beliefs, and pretenses that cemented such order. Chaucer s
microcosm of caricaturized hierarchies criticizes the current social order defining the late 1300s,
exposes the decadence of the disintegrating social structure, and hints at his idyllic version of a
more correct institution. To understand Chaucer s lampoonery, it is imperative to understand the
current rankings and privilege from whence he came. Born to a... Show more content on

When the supporting cast of women effort for mastery over their husbands; they abandon it the
moment they attain it. In an era where chastity was expected and cherished, the Wife of Bath
presents a refreshing alternative to such concepts. She boasts of her sexual proclivity and
contends that male genitalia serves a greater purpose than simply urination. Her freeness in
indulging in sexual activity and her multiple spouses speaks to her inner confidence and lack of
privacy. Her character discusses the power relations between men and women and posits that
women desire domination and control over men ( The Wife of Bath s Tale , 229); however, the
domination that they crave is surface level in that women relapse into their subordinate stereotypes
once they have been granted such control. In an analogous vein, the Nun s Priest Tale offers a
varied stance from feminist s push for coexisting powers if not complete domination. When
Chanticleer confides in his dear Pertelote about his premonition, she dismisses his qualms and
accuses him of cowardice. Her desire for a courageous mate parallels men s objectification of
women and exposes the equally one dimensional consideration given to

Long Bones Essay
Skeletisation of a dead body has made identification of the remains trickier. As humans, we become
accustomed to recognise others from outer body appearances, not their insides. However, it is well
established that morphological and metric changes occur on certain bones through a human s
lifetime (e.g. Pelvis: Phenice, 1969, Skull: Meindl and Lovejoy, 1985, Long bones: France, 1998)
making identification possible. To complicate matters, morphological and metric changes can differ
within and between human population groups due to intrinsic and extrinsic factors (DiGangi and
Moore, 2012). An example of this is nutritional deficiency, which effects males more than females
and causes reduced sexual dimorphism (Ross, Baker and Falsetti, 2003). Recently, there has been a
global trend to establish population specific standards for identification due to such variation.
Compared to America, much of Europe and other areas have not had as much opportunity to

measurements of appendicular bones have also shown to be useful at determining sex (France,

Wayne Williams Fiber Evidence Case Study
In the case of Wayne Williams, the fiber evidence was key in obtaining the conviction for the
murders (Imwinkelried, 1983). The fiber evidence most assuredly led to the jury s final decision
of guilty, without this evidence a case could not have been formed to display the guilt of Wayne
Williams without the shadow of a doubt. In addition to the fiber evidence, the prosecution
presented hair evidence that displayed a 98% chance of belonging to Wayne Williams as well as his
German Shepherd, Sheba (Deadman, 1984). This evidence alone would not have proven the guilt
of Wayne Williams. The prosecution also presented witness testimony linking Wayne Williams to
some of the victims despite his own testimony relaying he had no contact with them. The

Flower s effect on her?
To teach young children that being yourself is the best way to live, taking chances, being
respectful and opening up always goes a long way. I feel she wants to show us that reading and

so if no one reads new words how will the next person learn the meaning. 2. How does Angelou

Flowers? Cite some evidence from the essay that supports your view of her character.
She was a shy girl, stayed at home, did the same activities daily and didn t want to be in that
town. In paragraph 1 she says over a year I have sat stooped around the hose, to the store and
church feeling dirty and edible. 7. How does the description of Mrs. Flower s house and
possessions help communicate Angelous childhood reverence for this woman? Why were the
cookies and lemonade so important?
The description details how neat, clean, up scaled, homely and the feeling of love surrounding
being there. The cookies and lemonade are important because Mrs. Flowers made the especially

8. Why does Angelou choose to use dialogue in paragraphs 3741 instead of just describing the
scene?
Because the way she describes it makes you feel like your right there, knowing the feeling without
actually seeing the item. Capturing the reader s attention to detail bring the scenery closer to
understanding and wanting to know more.
9. Does Angelou use enough vivid details to make her narrative seem believable and her characters

Benin Art in Museums and Galleries Essay
The display of Benin art in museum and galleries reflect the attitudes and perceptions of Europeans
towards non western artefacts, especially African. Thus as European attitudes change towards non
western art since the discovery of Benin art in 1897, Benin art has been revaluated and re
categorised.
Initially there was a great deal of debate about Benin art and its display, as it did not equate with the
perceptions then held about Africa. Until the British conquest of Benin in 1897, little was known
about Benin and its culture apart from brief interaction with other Europeans in the sixteenth
century. The perception of Africa was of a primitive, savage and uncivilised land, full of abuses
and fetishes and idolatries , (Hodgkin, 1975, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This posed a display problem to exhibitors including the British Museum as they tried to fit them
into the ethnological museum to explain the emergence of civilisation from prehistory (Loftus,
2008). The predominating attitude towards the Benin artwork was that it was the exception and
lost treasure from an ancient, African civilisation. This resulted in the display of the Benin bronze
plaques in the British Museum as a collective wall decoration, halfway up the main stairs, one
more element in the eclectic mosaic of artefacts (Wood, 2008, p72). The rest of the display of
various antiquities of art and functional items like weapons and transport displayed jumbled
together in glass cabinets with little or no detail as to the function or cultural value of the artefacts
often misrepresenting ideas about primitive life.
The primitive nature of African art attracted many artists looking for new inspiration and
expression as urban modernity lost its vitality in the late 1880 s and 90 s (Wood, 2008). In
adopting primitive African art as the catalysis for their expression of modernity, avant garde artists
created a more positive perception of the primitive rather than the negative barbaric perception.
Wood (2008) quotes the early twentieth century, avant garde critic Carl Einstein in that the Benin
artworks were of no decisive significance. In fact, the western artists reduced their sophisticated
beauty of the artwork as seen in

Love is magical any way one looks at it. However, the love Tita felt in this story would also seem
to be considered sublime. Tita s feelings were inhuman about Pedro. How could anyone love a
person as much as Tita did and say anything? Society today has never heard of such a thing.
Everyone seems to say what he or she feels or doesn t feel. It doesn t matter to him or her.
Tita turned all of her feelings into cooking. The magical way Tita s feelings went into the cake
batter. As she mixed it she cried and the tears dropped into it the bowl. The cake was baked, and
people who ate it reflected each one s feelings toward each other. The cooking had a mystical
power that seemed to have some magical realism involved because of all the strange happenings
due to the cooking. However, the cooking seemed to have the essence of the sublime which
involves the inhuman image of silence of the sublime.

Light Pollution, And The Effects Of Light Pollution
A new study illustrates that light pollution has increased to such an extent all over the world that
both human beings and other animals are negatively affected by it. The study marks the first
observation of satellite images to ever be designed specifically for detecting particular types of
artificial lights. A petition was also started recently via Change.Org outlining three main ways light
pollution impinges upon the health of humans and birds while also brightening the night sky. For
human health, the biggest issue is it messes with circadian rhythms, according to Laura Stepney,
who started the petition. You can get black out curtains but you shouldn t have to. The city
should be considering that from the beginning with the design, instead of people having to react
and protect themselves. She cites a study that found residents of metropolitan areas lose
considerable hours of sleep due to going to bed later and waking earlier. A more recent study
published in the peer reviewed journal, Science Advances, used satellite data to illustrate that
Earth s night is gradually brightening. It also showed that artificially lit outdoor surfaces have
become 2.2 percent more common on average each year since 2012. Pundits argue that this is
particularly problematic because these nighttime lights not only disrupt circadian rhythms but
also increase risks of depression, diabetes and cancer. In the course of migrating, both sea turtles
and birds are disoriented by nighttime lights, and insects are attracted to them, which often leads
them to their death. These lights are predominately LED lights, which have become increasingly
popular over the course of the last couple decades primarily based on the marketing promise of
energy conservation. LED lights are not inherently problematic in and of themselves according
to German Research Center for Geosciences physicist Chris Kyba. He says the problem is the
sheer number of lights that people are collectively installing. We ll light something that we didn t
light before, like a bicycle path through a park or a section of highway leading outside of town in
the past wasn t lit, Kyba explains as an example. And so all of those new uses of light offset, to
some extent,

Analysis Of Mihayao Spirited Away By Miyazaki Hayao...
In a traditional or typical family, it is always understood that children are meant to and able to
rely on their parents for both safety and emotional support. In the film by Miyazaki Hayao
Spirited Away, we observe a family far from the traditional sense of the word. Much of this film
is about a young ten year old girl who is forced to save herself and her parents from being forever
stuck in a world separate of their own. The relationships she loses and gains form her into a
different person than who she is in the beginning of the film. Susan Napier asserts in her book
Anime from Akira to Howl s Moving Castle Chihiro is a bratty child with parents who seem to be
detached with her and as we see in the film selfish and indulgent in their own desires (181). These
factors all contribute to the development and relationships of Chihiro in the film as well as the idea
of family. At the beginning of the film as Chihiro and her parents are driving to their new home
in the countryside, we are introduced to the type of relationships and personality of the family
members. Napier describes her parents as disconnected from each other and their daughter and
Chihiro as a whiny, sullen, and self obsessed child (181). Right off the bat we are able to see a
significant difference in what a family is considered to be and how it is represented in the film.
As mentioned before a family is meant to care for each other and parents are meant to care for
their children especially, however perhaps because of these circumstances we are led on the
journey of Chihiro s evolution from that of a spoiled child to a braver and assertive child. Upon
getting lost in the forest by taking a shortcut, the father decides instead of trying to find their way
back to the road, on exploring the mysterious tunnel and the motherfollows, telling Chihiro to stay
in the car while they go off to see what is on the other end.
Already we see how different the role of the father is portrayed as someone who thinks of his
own desires and being before that of his wife or daughter. In the traditional role of a father, he is
the person who is the protector of his family and as such he is meant to put his family first. It is
pointed out in Napier s book

If the magnet is withdrawn, the direction of the current is reversed. Such currents are called
induced currents. The current flows in the conductor as a result of an electromotive force that is

The effect of conductor moving through a magnetic field is that it would cause a electromagnetic
field which is used in transformers to change current and voltage.
Mutual inductance is the magnetic field generated by a coil of wire which induces a voltage in the
other coil of wire. A transformer is an object constructed of multiple numbers of coils in close
proximity to each other, with the express purpose of creating a condition of mutual inductance
between the coils.
Transformers Having a different number of coils between two coils of wire can cause a decreas
of voltage of AC currents in applications. Transformers are based on Faraday s Law of
electromagnetic induction and mutual induction; the transformer has the first wire coil that emits a
magnetic flux that has a EMF in a secondary wire coil with aid of a high magnetic permeable core.

Why Is Karl Marx Called The Proletariat
The Harvest shows the life of what Karl Marx termed the proletariat . Proletariat is Marx s term
for the exploited class, the mass of workers who do not own the means of production. These

Bourgeoisie. These are the capitalists who own the means of production. The capitalists watch over
the companies, and make and change policy. The proletariats have to work poor means to keep
these companies going. The one girl from The Harvest, Zulema, says that in 1 week she makes 64

A Brief History of Harriet Jacobs
As a slave and as a runaway, Harriet Jacobs suffered more psychological abuse than physical
abuse. Harriet Jacobs had to withstand massive amounts of pain and psychological torture due to
her place in society as a slave. Jacobs does not leave out the physical aspect of the suffering,
however, she focuses more on the spiritual and emotional aspect of the slaveryage. Although Jacobs
had a relatively easy life in comparison to other slaves, she was deprived from basic human
rights and necessities, witnessed human beings resolve to corruption and be treated like animals,
and is sexually abused. The mental scars left behind are very harsh. Harriet Jacobs was deprived
from basic human rights and necessities. Since Jacobs grew up in a society were African
Americans were inferior, they were objectified rather than be treated in a humane matter. Slaves
were taken away the idea that they were human. ...they thought he had spoiled his children, by
teaching them to feel that they were human beings. This was blasphemous doctrine for a slave to
teach; y presumptuous in him, and dangerous to the masters. (Pg. 12). Jacobs describes how slave
owners declared slaves who tried and spread the idea that they were worth something in society,
dangerous and immediately took violent action against them to suppress those thoughts. This was
dangerous to the slave owners because they believed that rebellion might be initiated. Jacobs was

Deer Antlers Research Paper
For many years, people have hunted Cervidae formally known as deer for not only their meat, but
for the size of their racks or more known as antlers. Along with deer, moose, caribou, and elks are
hunted for their enormous antlers. Although some people mix horns with antlers, they are
completely two different structures. Horns are made of keratin and continuously grow while antlers
are bony structures that fall off and regrow again. While deershed and regrow antlers, the antlers
repair themselves without leaving a mark. Even though antlers portrayed for looks they serve many
purposes such as dominance and protection. When male deer are first born they are not born with
their antlers. Researcher J. Price says that antlers are cranial appendages that develop after birth and

During the development of the antlers they contain mainly water and protein so this depends all
on the animals nutrition and body weight (Price 2004). As this process goes on the deer starts to
grow hair on top of the antlers which carry the nerves and blood vessels. This specific hair
coverage is called velvet. This spongy bone then turns into hard, compacted bones on the outside
while the centers become filled with a coarse, lamellar bone and marrow specs (Price 2004).
Depending on the season, antlers stop growing near the later part of summer of the early part of
fall. Once this occurs, the velvet is then rubbed off by rubbing up against trees called casting.
This means that the deer s testosterone level has dropped (Price 2004). This process will reoccur
every year throughout the deer s life span. Although it is primarily males that have antlers there is
an exception in some species such that females can obtain antlers as well. Such species include
reindeer and caribou. Although the females have antler, they are relatively smaller than the males
says researcher Eigil Reimers. So why do the female reindeer and caribou have antler? Maybe

Framing Effects the Sales Promotion by Referring to the...
The concept of framing which is a part of prospect theory (Kahneman and Tversky 1979) is
closely related to the formation of reference price in the consumer s mind. Outcomes above the
consumer s reference point are presented as gains and it affects choice, judgment, and risk taking
differently than the same alternatives which are below the reference point and are coded as losses
by the consumer. In extant literature, there have been efforts to explain the framing effects of sales
promotionby referring to mental accounting theory. Thaler and Johnson (1986) have proposed that
consumers use hedonic rules to edit their mental accounts, therefore when they see a small gain
(e.g., pricediscount) relative to a big loss (e.g., purchasing cost), they prefer to separate them
psychologically into two different accounts rather than integrate them. This is the silver lining
principle (based on prospect theory) and it also says that utility functions are concave for gains
and convex for losses, and the curve for losses is steeper than that for gains. Because the size of a
promotionis usually small relative to the purchasing cost, consumers should create a new account
for the promotion rather than integrate it into the purchasing cost, regardless of the promotional
types.
This proposed study aims to use mental accounting theory and sales framing concepts to upgrading
promotions and compare the attractiveness of non monetary promotions versus price discount
promotions in a

Some people are born into stable families, so they have m ore opportunities than those that are born

One other thing society canГt do is simply hand out money or food stamps to the families of these
children. Who knows where this money is going or what it is being used for? The food stamps
could be intended to feed a baby, but instead they could be used to buy food or items that a child

How Do Special Interest Groups and Mass Media Influence...
The media, interest groups, and political standard is a fascinating marriage in our mechanically
exceptional social order. It is better comprehended when differentiated into their singular
commitment to our social order to positively feel their effect on our day by day lives. Broad
communications is characterized as a method for correspondence that achieves a huge volume of
individuals in a short measure of time (broad communications). Interest groups could be better
seen as an aggregation that is resolved to forestall or help change open arrangement without the
need of being chosen (Twyman Whitney, 2009). Furthermore, popular conclusion is characterized
as the whole of all unique convictions in a given populace. By understanding what these parts of
the current political ideal model should speak to we can better see how this marriage has been
tainted and the electorate is, no doubt deceived. The first motivation behind the media was to
educate the general population of any news on an authentic, fair minded, and truthful way and we
managed the press in which constitutionally ensured flexibility of the press. Benefit spurs this new
development of the press. Ads in all manifestations of media, is the primary wellspring of income
for that organization and this drive revenue driven can structure inclinations so as to expand benefit
by promotions that are equipped to the crowd, which as a general rule is the end customer of the
paying sponsors (Petrova,

Analysis Of Heinz Ketchup
A Heinz Ketchup advertisement shows sliced tomatoes stacked haphazardly to form the general
shape of a bottle of ketchup. Towards the bottom of the frame, there is a crisp text that reads, No
one grows ketchup like Heinz. Through the analyzation of this advertisement, it becomes apparent
that the advertisement is effective and interesting in many different aspects, including form, content
and style.
The form of this advertisement reflects the artists intentions of making the product, Heinz ketchup,
seem healthier. The lines throughout are very clean and crisp which gives an air of freshness about
the piece. The implied shape of the ketchup bottle through stacked tomato slices is an innovative
way for the artist to show that Heinz ketchup

The Interesting Industry of Japanese Whaling Essay
If I had one year to learn more about a topic of my choice, I would study about the Japanese whaling
industry. Although whale hunting in Japan began in the 12th century, Japan s involvement in the
whaling industry began in the 1890s. The international whaling industry functioned normally until
1925 when the League of Nations called for conservation measures in 1925. This eventually led to
the Geneva Convention for the Regulation of Whalingin 1931, which was ignored by Japan and
Germany. Instead, as whale catches diminished in coastal waters, Japanese whale hunters looked to
Antarctica. This started with the Japanese company Toyo Hogei K.K. purchasing the Norwegian
ship Antarctic, renaming it the Tonan Maru.
However, World War II soon... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Japan joined the International Whaling Commission in 1951; however, Japan would later be
criticized by environmental organizations and anti whaling nations for making heavy use of Article
VIII of the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling which states that
Notwithstanding anything contained in this Convention any Contracting Government may grant to
any of its nationals a special permit authorizing that national to kill, take and treat whales for
purposes of scientific research subject to such restrictions as to number and subject to such other
conditions as the Contracting Government thinks fit, and the killing, taking, and treating of whales
in accordance with the provisions of this Article shall be exempt from the operation of this
Convention.
As the commercial viability of large competing whaling fleets was diminished due to restrictions,
six Japanese whaling companies agreed to merge into one in July 1975. The government declared
support for the new company, with Prime Minister Shintaro Abe saying, We ask that the flame of
the whaling industry will not be put out and that you do your best to secure Japan s food supplies.
The government will be doing all it can to actively support your efforts. Eventually, the company
merged with the Japan Whaling Association and Institute of Cetacean Researchto create the
Institute of Cetacean Research in 1987.

Killer Whales Orcinus Orca
Introduction
Killer whales, Orcinus orca, are mammals, that are part of the Cetacea order, the Odontoceti
suborder and the Delphinidae family (Ketten, 1997). They evolved from land creatures, requiring a
multitude of adaptations so that the transition to water was successful. They live in all oceans, but
are most commonly found in cool, temperate waters (Strager, 1994).
Communication between killer whales is primarily used for reproduction, orientation and hunting
(Erbe, 2002; Holt et al, 2009). The three sounds that killer whales produce are echolocation clicks,
whistles and pulsed calls (Deecke et al, 2005). Clicks occur in a series and are short sounds used
for orientation and when finding prey; whistles are used for communication when ... Show more

This partly because the frequency ranges of boats and whales can overlap (Holt et al, 2009). If
whale individuals are unable to communicate with other members of their pod, there would be
less cohesion when hunting, difficulty in finding a mate, and an overall an increase in stress
(Holt et al, 2009). There have also been cases where boat motors have impaired the whales to
even detect their prey (Barrett Lennard et al, 1996). These anthropogenic, background sounds are
thought to interfere with communication between individuals by masking the whale s calls,
particularly if at specific threshold level (Foote et al, 2004). Ways that whales have been shown to
adapt include changing the amplitude and duration of calls (Foote et al, 2004; Holt et al, 2009). As
the background sounds increased by one decibel, the amplitude also increased by one

Analysis Of Stone City By Grant Wood
Stone City by Grant Wood was created in 1930 by using oil on wood panel. This painting
illustrates a lot of visual elements and principles of design which are important components of an
artist s work. Visual elements and principles of design help draw the viewer s eyes to certain
aspects of the painting and they tell the story of what the artist is trying to convey. This analysis
will highlight the visual elements and principles of design that are present in Grant Wood s Stone
City. The use of lines in Stone City is one of the key visual elements in this painting. The artist used
many contour lines to define the boundaries between the trees and the valley, the river and the land,
and even the long roads from the hillsas it winds through the countryside. Wood also incorporated
a lot of implied lines into his artwork. The trees and bushes that line the hills create a line of sight
which draws the eye of the viewer to the house on the river, which is the focal point of this painting.
The lines all move in different directions and help the artist highlight different aspects of the
painting. Around the cityand in the foreground of the painting the artist uses a lot of horizontal
lines, which gives the town a calm sensation. As we move away from the city, we find a lot of
vertical lines which denote growth. We also find a lot of diagonal lines which imply action in the
painting. The diagonal lines are predominantly used by the artist in the creation of the roads and

  • 2. Liberi A Cultural Overview Liberia: A Cultural Overview Liberia s political system and history has been strongly based and influenced on American and English common law. This is due in part to Liberia s initial colonization of freed American slaves starting around 1820. Initially 86 immigrants, also known as Americo Liberians settled in the now named Monrovia, named after President James Monroe. In the following years thousands more freed slaves and free African Americans resettled by a campaign created by the American Colonization Society. The True Whig Party ruled the country and their first President was Joseph Jenkins Roberts who was born and raised in America. The government was styled on that of the United States and the indigenous population were restricted their voting rights by the Americo Liberian elite. The True Whig Party dominated all sectors of Liberiafrom independence in 1847 until April of 1980, when Liberian Master Sergeant Samuel K. Doe, from the Krahn ethnic group, seized power in a coup d etat. To put a formal end to control by the Americo Liberian political domination formation of The People s Redemption Council was necessary. The Doe government saw increased human rights abuses, corruption, and ethnic tensions and the standard of living in Liberia continued to deteriorate. Doe ensured that he retained close relations with America; he met twice with President Ronald Reagan and enjoyed considerable financial support from the United States. From 1989 to 2003, ... • 3. Just Justice For All Analysis In the lecture With Justice for All? by Bryan Stevenson, he discusses his book Just Mercy as well as allows the audience to question what mercy is in America. Stevenson began the lecture by discussing how the audience has the capability to create more change, justice, and opportunity in America. Stevenson spoke about the 5 things required in order to be able to make more change for the better. The first thing that we must be able to do is that we have to be concerned about our identity. We can call ourselves students and lawyers, however, it doesn t describe who we are. The adjectives used allow us to have our identity. We should be saying we are active and kind students, teachers, lawyers etc. The next thing that must be done in order to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the recent election, one of the tactics that have been used is this idea of fear and the presidential candidates have been using fear when discussing the policies and trying to convince the voters as to why they should be voting for them. They use the idea of fear and how they, as presidents, will be able to help solve the issues and fears in question. This idea of politics of fear (Salahuddin) also tied to the lecture and how the legal system works. The system is run on the fear and racial prejudice that leads to decisions being made that are unequal and unjust. One of the biggest issues that in order to look at changes that need to be done and be able to make changes, we must not run on fear and anger. Another topic discussed in both the lecture and the talk was the idea of racial prejudice. People of color and African Americans are victims of many different hatred and prejudice and based on presumptions. (Salahuddin) Black and browns, in America, are presumed dangerous leading to them being burdened . (Stevenson) It ties to what we talked about in class and the different examples of how blacks face so many different burdens and are faced with difficulties in doing tasks that white people do on a normal ... • 4. Essay on Nature in Context vs. Nature out of Context Nature in Context vs. Nature out of Context Nature has long been the focus of many an author s work, whether it is expressed through poetry, short stories, or any other type of literary creation. Authors have been given an endless supply of pictures and descriptions because of nature s infinite splendor that can be vividly reproduced through words. It is because of this fact that often a reader is faced with two different approaches to the way nature is portrayed. Some authors tend to look at nature from a more extensive perspective as in William Wordsworth s I wandered Lonely as a Cloud. While some authors tend to focus more on individual aspects of nature and are able to captivate the reader with their intimate portrayals of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But the second line in this poem, sometimes whoever seeks abroad may find, was particularly interesting to me for I relate to its feelings of optimism and accord. In a way it also seems that the second stanza is heavy with sleepiness, with the exception of the last four lines, as displayed in the above quote with words like the winnowing wind , Drows d , and sound asleep . The four last lines of the second stanza, as I mentioned earlier, describes Autumn in pure action, Steady thy laden head across a brook; /Or by a cider press, with patient look, by bringing out the true active lifestyle of what nature truly is. Again, through his imagination Keats is able to embark upon what he is really seeing. The purpose of the poem becomes clear in the final stanza, and in the warmth of the second line, Where are the songs of spring? Ay, where are they? /Think not of them, Thou hast thy music too, where Keats sheds light on the idea that that everything has a purpose. It would appear that Autumn, the season which robs us of the warmth of summer, where the leaves come tumbling from the trees, the season that prepares the world for a dark and cold winter ahead, has its purpose too. What would spring be without death, light without dark, but indeed it appears that Keats is thinking of life without death. In this poem, Keats is able to focus in on the beauty and splendid ness of autumn in order to demonstrate that everything will change according ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Lake Colac Is Part Of The Corangamite Basin Lake Colac is part of the Corangamite basin that was formed in the early Pleistocene and Tertiary during the volcanic movement. Due to the volcanic commotion it had blocked the natural outflow of Lake Colac s two tributaries, Dean s Creek and Barongarook Creek causing the rivers to flow into the basin leaving muddy deposits (Williams 1992). Wind has also caused crescent shaped dunes to form creating many shallow lakes and wetlands. The surface area of Lake Colac is about 3,000 hectares and has the circumference of about 33km, which is relatively shallow with an average depth of no more than 2.5 metres (Colac Otway Shire Council, 2002a). It has very different areas of vegetation including the Otway hinterland forests, volcanic plains, farmland and a number of urban settlements (Management of Environmental Quality 2005). • 12. Gender, Gender And Gender Bias Language and gender has become an increasingly popular topic of study over recent decades, most likely due to the second wave of feminism in the 1960s and 70s. This can also be seen in the fact that goals of linguistic studies shifted at this point, to not just look at grammatical differences between males and females but to examine sexism and genderbias in language. The wording of such studies becomes increasingly important in the modern era, as gender is now recognised as a socially constructed concept of masculine and feminine features, based on biological sex but not limited to that. Simone de Beauvoir (1952) believed that we gradually become more masculine or feminine but we are not inherently gendered. Language and gender was not developed as a serious subfield until the 1975 publication of Robin Lakoff s Language and Woman s Place. Lakoff argued that women use particular language features in order to deny themselves means of strong expression, which are stereotypically reserved for males. These features include shows of uncertainty, such as hedging and indirect requests. Indirect requests include making a statement in hope that it will elicit the desired response from someone else without openly asking. Women s speech seems... to contain more instances of well , y know ... words that convey the sense that the speaker is uncertain about what [she] is saying (Lakoff, 1975:53). However, that also doesn t mean that ISO 9000 promises the quality of a company s product will be great; Richard Buerow, director of corporate quality at Motorola states: With ISO 900 you can still have terrible processes and products. Lady Lazarus, by Sylvia Plath Lady Lazarus is a poem by Sylvia Plath, written in 1962 shortly before her death in early 1963, and published posthumously by her husband, poet Ted Hughes, in 1965 in the collected volume Ariel. Lady Lazarus is a poem about suicide as a rebirth, and was in part inspired by Plath s own life and draws heavily on Plath s lifelong struggle with bipolar depression and suicidal feelings, and uses holocaust imagery to paint a bleak portrait of suicideand hopelessness. Sylvia Plath was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1932 to a German immigrant college professor and his graduate student turned wife. The title of the poem, Lady Lazarus, is a reference to the biblical story of Lazarus of Bethany, a man brought back to life by Christ as a demonstration of his divine power to non believing onlookers. (The Holy Bible, King James Version, John 1 44.) The speaker in the poem compares her near death experience and suicide attempts to a resurrection or rebirth, such as in the story of Lazarus. In the first stanza the speaker declares that every ten years she dies, drawing an eerie parallel to Plath s own life. At eight, Plath lost her father and this sparked an immense resentment towards him and strong feelings of alienation throughout the rest of her life; this was her first death, and the speaker declares this death an accident in stanza 12, lines 2 3. Her second death was intentional. (stanza 13) This death came at age twenty when Plath attempted suicide for the first time. The speaker in the poem says that this death was meant to be permanent and she did not wish to be reborn. (stanza 13, line 2.) The third and final death was Plath s suicide at age thirty, only a few months after Lady Lazarus was written. In a way, Plath hinted at her worsening mental state through this work. The objective of my research is to discover the ancient history of body art, the social and cultural significances and stigmas of tattoos, as well as to discover the process of getting a custom tattoo. After defining my objectives and doing preliminary research, I have chosen to analyze and interpret the existing research about this subject through a conceptual framework. This framework indicates that tattooing is an ancient art form practiced around the world for many different reasons and has a diverse cultural and social significance in today s societies. This framework was chosen as a result of preliminary reading and analyzing existing research about the history and culture of tattooing. This existing research has shown that the practice of tattooing dates back to ancient civilizations, as well as the different perceptions of body art in current global societies, both negative and positive. My research will consist of three topics; ancient tattooing history, the recent history and the emergence of western practice, and the social and cultural significance and stigmas in global societies today. • 20. Chastity In The Canterbury Tales Through the union of thirty four pilgrims on their journey to Canterbury for absolution, Chaucer pens the tales and interactions of the pilgrims of various ranks and ecclesiastic affiliation. He negotiates a social hierarchy different from that of the current governing structure through his acute understanding of the behaviors, beliefs, and pretenses that cemented such order. Chaucer s microcosm of caricaturized hierarchies criticizes the current social order defining the late 1300s, exposes the decadence of the disintegrating social structure, and hints at his idyllic version of a more correct institution. To understand Chaucer s lampoonery, it is imperative to understand the current rankings and privilege from whence he came. Born to a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the supporting cast of women effort for mastery over their husbands; they abandon it the moment they attain it. In an era where chastity was expected and cherished, the Wife of Bath presents a refreshing alternative to such concepts. She boasts of her sexual proclivity and contends that male genitalia serves a greater purpose than simply urination. Her freeness in indulging in sexual activity and her multiple spouses speaks to her inner confidence and lack of privacy. Her character discusses the power relations between men and women and posits that women desire domination and control over men ( The Wife of Bath s Tale , 229); however, the domination that they crave is surface level in that women relapse into their subordinate stereotypes once they have been granted such control. In an analogous vein, the Nun s Priest Tale offers a varied stance from feminist s push for coexisting powers if not complete domination. • 21. Long Bones Essay Skeletisation of a dead body has made identification of the remains trickier. As humans, we become accustomed to recognise others from outer body appearances, not their insides. However, it is well established that morphological and metric changes occur on certain bones through a human s lifetime (e.g. Pelvis: Phenice, 1969, Skull: Meindl and Lovejoy, 1985, Long bones: France, 1998) making identification possible. To complicate matters, morphological and metric changes can differ within and between human population groups due to intrinsic and extrinsic factors (DiGangi and Moore, 2012). An example of this is nutritional deficiency, which effects males more than females and causes reduced sexual dimorphism (Ross, Baker and Falsetti, 2003). Recently, there has been a global trend to establish population specific standards for identification due to such variation. Thus as European attitudes change towards non western art since the discovery of Benin art in 1897, Benin art has been revaluated and re categorised. Initially there was a great deal of debate about Benin art and its display, as it did not equate with the perceptions then held about Africa. Until the British conquest of Benin in 1897, little was known about Benin and its culture apart from brief interaction with other Europeans in the sixteenth century. The perception of Africa was of a primitive, savage and uncivilised land, full of abuses and fetishes and idolatries , (Hodgkin, 1975, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This posed a display problem to exhibitors including the British Museum as they tried to fit them into the ethnological museum to explain the emergence of civilisation from prehistory (Loftus, 2008). The predominating attitude towards the Benin artwork was that it was the exception and lost treasure from an ancient, African civilisation. This resulted in the display of the Benin bronze plaques in the British Museum as a collective wall decoration, halfway up the main stairs, one more element in the eclectic mosaic of artefacts (Wood, 2008, p72). The rest of the display of various antiquities of art and functional items like weapons and transport displayed jumbled together in glass cabinets with little or no detail as to the function or cultural value of the artefacts often misrepresenting ideas about primitive life. The primitive nature of African art attracted many artists looking for new inspiration and expression as urban modernity lost its vitality in the late 1880 s and 90 s (Wood, 2008). In adopting primitive African art as the catalysis for their expression of modernity, avant garde artists created a more positive perception of the primitive rather than the negative barbaric perception. Wood (2008) quotes the early twentieth century, avant garde critic Carl Einstein in that the Benin artworks were of no decisive significance. • 27. Light Pollution, And The Effects Of Light Pollution A new study illustrates that light pollution has increased to such an extent all over the world that both human beings and other animals are negatively affected by it. The study marks the first observation of satellite images to ever be designed specifically for detecting particular types of artificial lights. A petition was also started recently via Change.Org outlining three main ways light pollution impinges upon the health of humans and birds while also brightening the night sky. For human health, the biggest issue is it messes with circadian rhythms, according to Laura Stepney, who started the petition. You can get black out curtains but you shouldn t have to. The city should be considering that from the beginning with the design, instead of people having to react and protect themselves. She cites a study that found residents of metropolitan areas lose considerable hours of sleep due to going to bed later and waking earlier. A more recent study published in the peer reviewed journal, Science Advances, used satellite data to illustrate that Earth s night is gradually brightening. It also showed that artificially lit outdoor surfaces have become 2.2 percent more common on average each year since 2012. Pundits argue that this is particularly problematic because these nighttime lights not only disrupt circadian rhythms but also increase risks of depression, diabetes and cancer. In the course of migrating, both sea turtles and birds are disoriented by nighttime lights, and insects are attracted to them, which often leads them to their death. These lights are predominately LED lights, which have become increasingly popular over the course of the last couple decades primarily based on the marketing promise of energy conservation. LED lights are not inherently problematic in and of themselves according to German Research Center for Geosciences physicist Chris Kyba. He says the problem is the sheer number of lights that people are collectively installing. We ll light something that we didn t light before, like a bicycle path through a park or a section of highway leading outside of town in the past wasn t lit, Kyba explains as an example. • 28. Analysis Of Mihayao Spirited Away By Miyazaki Hayao... In a traditional or typical family, it is always understood that children are meant to and able to rely on their parents for both safety and emotional support. In the film by Miyazaki Hayao Spirited Away, we observe a family far from the traditional sense of the word. Much of this film is about a young ten year old girl who is forced to save herself and her parents from being forever stuck in a world separate of their own. The relationships she loses and gains form her into a different person than who she is in the beginning of the film. Susan Napier asserts in her book Anime from Akira to Howl s Moving Castle Chihiro is a bratty child with parents who seem to be detached with her and as we see in the film selfish and indulgent in their own desires (181). These factors all contribute to the development and relationships of Chihiro in the film as well as the idea of family. At the beginning of the film as Chihiro and her parents are driving to their new home in the countryside, we are introduced to the type of relationships and personality of the family members. Napier describes her parents as disconnected from each other and their daughter and Chihiro as a whiny, sullen, and self obsessed child (181). Right off the bat we are able to see a significant difference in what a family is considered to be and how it is represented in the film. As mentioned before a family is meant to care for each other and parents are meant to care for their children especially, however perhaps because of these circumstances we are led on the journey of Chihiro s evolution from that of a spoiled child to a braver and assertive child. Upon getting lost in the forest by taking a shortcut, the father decides instead of trying to find their way back to the road, on exploring the mysterious tunnel and the motherfollows, telling Chihiro to stay in the car while they go off to see what is on the other end. Already we see how different the role of the father is portrayed as someone who thinks of his own desires and being before that of his wife or daughter. In the traditional role of a father, he is the person who is the protector of his family and as such he is meant to put his family first. It is pointed out in Napier s book ... Along with deer, moose, caribou, and elks are hunted for their enormous antlers. Although some people mix horns with antlers, they are completely two different structures. Horns are made of keratin and continuously grow while antlers are bony structures that fall off and regrow again. While deershed and regrow antlers, the antlers repair themselves without leaving a mark. Even though antlers portrayed for looks they serve many purposes such as dominance and protection. As this process goes on the deer starts to grow hair on top of the antlers which carry the nerves and blood vessels. This specific hair coverage is called velvet. This spongy bone then turns into hard, compacted bones on the outside while the centers become filled with a coarse, lamellar bone and marrow specs (Price 2004). Depending on the season, antlers stop growing near the later part of summer of the early part of fall. Once this occurs, the velvet is then rubbed off by rubbing up against trees called casting. This means that the deer s testosterone level has dropped (Price 2004). This process will reoccur every year throughout the deer s life span. The concept of framing which is a part of prospect theory (Kahneman and Tversky 1979) is closely related to the formation of reference price in the consumer s mind. Outcomes above the consumer s reference point are presented as gains and it affects choice, judgment, and risk taking differently than the same alternatives which are below the reference point and are coded as losses by the consumer. In extant literature, there have been efforts to explain the framing effects of sales promotionby referring to mental accounting theory. Thaler and Johnson (1986) have proposed that consumers use hedonic rules to edit their mental accounts, therefore when they see a small gain (e.g., pricediscount) relative to a big loss (e.g., purchasing cost), they prefer to separate them psychologically into two different accounts rather than integrate them. This is the silver lining principle (based on prospect theory) and it also says that utility functions are concave for gains and convex for losses, and the curve for losses is steeper than that for gains. Because the size of a promotionis usually small relative to the purchasing cost, consumers should create a new account for the promotion rather than integrate it into the purchasing cost, regardless of the promotional types. This proposed study aims to use mental accounting theory and sales framing concepts to upgrading promotions and compare the attractiveness of non monetary promotions versus price discount promotions in a ... • 41. The Interesting Industry of Japanese Whaling Essay If I had one year to learn more about a topic of my choice, I would study about the Japanese whaling industry. Although whale hunting in Japan began in the 12th century, Japan s involvement in the whaling industry began in the 1890s. The international whaling industry functioned normally until 1925 when the League of Nations called for conservation measures in 1925. This eventually led to the Geneva Convention for the Regulation of Whalingin 1931, which was ignored by Japan and Germany. Instead, as whale catches diminished in coastal waters, Japanese whale hunters looked to Antarctica. This started with the Japanese company Toyo Hogei K.K. purchasing the Norwegian ship Antarctic, renaming it the Tonan Maru. However, World War II soon... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Japan joined the International Whaling Commission in 1951; however, Japan would later be criticized by environmental organizations and anti whaling nations for making heavy use of Article VIII of the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling which states that Notwithstanding anything contained in this Convention any Contracting Government may grant to any of its nationals a special permit authorizing that national to kill, take and treat whales for purposes of scientific research subject to such restrictions as to number and subject to such other conditions as the Contracting Government thinks fit, and the killing, taking, and treating of whales in accordance with the provisions of this Article shall be exempt from the operation of this Convention. As the commercial viability of large competing whaling fleets was diminished due to restrictions, six Japanese whaling companies agreed to merge into one in July 1975. The government declared support for the new company, with Prime Minister Shintaro Abe saying, We ask that the flame of the whaling industry will not be put out and that you do your best to secure Japan s food supplies. The government will be doing all it can to actively support your efforts. Eventually, the company merged with the Japan Whaling Association and Institute of Cetacean Researchto create the Institute of Cetacean Research in 1987. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Killer Whales Orcinus Orca Introduction Killer whales, Orcinus orca, are mammals, that are part of the Cetacea order, the Odontoceti suborder and the Delphinidae family (Ketten, 1997). They evolved from land creatures, requiring a multitude of adaptations so that the transition to water was successful. They live in all oceans, but are most commonly found in cool, temperate waters (Strager, 1994). Communication between killer whales is primarily used for reproduction, orientation and hunting (Erbe, 2002; Holt et al, 2009). The three sounds that killer whales produce are echolocation clicks, whistles and pulsed calls (Deecke et al, 2005). Clicks occur in a series and are short sounds used for orientation and when finding prey; whistles are used for communication when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This partly because the frequency ranges of boats and whales can overlap (Holt et al, 2009). If whale individuals are unable to communicate with other members of their pod, there would be less cohesion when hunting, difficulty in finding a mate, and an overall an increase in stress (Holt et al, 2009). There have also been cases where boat motors have impaired the whales to even detect their prey (Barrett Lennard et al, 1996). These anthropogenic, background sounds are thought to interfere with communication between individuals by masking the whale s calls, particularly if at specific threshold level (Foote et al, 2004). Ways that whales have been shown to adapt include changing the amplitude and duration of calls (Foote et al, 2004; Holt et al, 2009). As the background sounds increased by one decibel, the amplitude also increased by one ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Analysis Of Stone City By Grant Wood Stone City by Grant Wood was created in 1930 by using oil on wood panel. This painting illustrates a lot of visual elements and principles of design which are important components of an artist s work. Visual elements and principles of design help draw the viewer s eyes to certain aspects of the painting and they tell the story of what the artist is trying to convey. This analysis will highlight the visual elements and principles of design that are present in Grant Wood s Stone City. The use of lines in Stone City is one of the key visual elements in this painting. The artist used many contour lines to define the boundaries between the trees and the valley, the river and the land, and even the long roads from the hillsas it winds through the countryside. Wood also incorporated a lot of implied lines into his artwork. The trees and bushes that line the hills create a line of sight which draws the eye of the viewer to the house on the river, which is the focal point of this painting. The lines all move in different directions and help the artist highlight different aspects of the painting. Around the cityand in the foreground of the painting the artist uses a lot of horizontal lines, which gives the town a calm sensation. As we move away from the city, we find a lot of vertical lines which denote growth. We also find a lot of diagonal lines which imply action in the painting. The diagonal lines are predominantly used by the artist in the creation of the roads and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
