Positive Psychology Personal Statement
I am currently taking a Clinical Psychology Course in which we are learning about Martin
Seligman s concept, positive psychology. One of his developments is gratitude letters. Once I
learned more about what gratitude is, I found it most fitting to write to you to express how
thankful I am to have you in my life and the positive impact you have made on it. You have taught
me so much about all paths of life. You have guided me to many incredible experiences and helped
me with some of the most challenging. Without your guidance and love I would not be where I am
today.
Coming into a new school sophomore year of high school was a scary task for a girl who had spent

Helping professions are a broad term because practically all occupations incorporate some kind
of helping. You introduced me to psychology and what my future would entail if I chose to
pursue this field. Currently, as you know, I am still attending The University of Scranton
following the same path we chose together. I have recently added a minor in human services and
plan to attend graduate school for counseling. The most important transformation you have guided
me on was taking my lack of confidence and insecurity and turning it around to aid people who
go through the same emotional conflicts. Having your constant emotional support since my
sophomore year of high school is a gift that I am eternally grateful for. Coming home over breaks
and still having a great friend and mentor to catch up with is exhilarating. This fall break, having

Outline Scientific Theory
Between all of the factors that outline the scientific studies such the theories, hypothesis and even
law but what differences and similarities do they share? A scientific theory is usually said to be a
well tested concept that explains an endless supply of observations. For example we obviously
know that the Earth revolves around the sun and has been tested through observation and
experiment which clearly cant come up with another explanation to contradict this theory. On the
other end of the spectrum we have scientific hypothesis which is commonly seen as a possible
explanation for a set of observations or answer to a scientific question must be testable. A great
example that can be used is if you were to test smokers and observing which

The Segregation Of Disabled Canadian Citizens
The social, political and economic conditions during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in
Canada fostered the segregation of disabled Canadian citizens. Prior to the 1980 s, this segregated
population was viewed as incapable individuals who were dependent on others. As a result,
disabled Canadians were denied opportunities to fully exercise their civil rights (Galer, 2015). At
the dawn of the DisabilityRights Movement in 1980, Canadian legislators were willing and
prepared to ignore the rights of Canadians with disabilities. However, throughout the decade,
Canadian citizens with disabilities and their supporters fought back and proved to the world that
the voices of the disenfranchised could make a difference (Peters, 2004). Five briefs submitted to
the Special Joint Committee of the House of Commons and the Senate in 1980 and 1981 regarding
disability rights, reflected and supported the efforts of the Disability Rights Movementand
significantly contributed to its evolution. The Special Joint Committee of the House of Commons
and the Senate was implemented in 1980 in the wake of the Quebec referendum on independence.
The goal of the committee was to hear submissions from the public on amendments to the
Constitution. In a three month consultation period, 914 individuals and groups submitted briefs
before the committee (ClГ©ment, 2015). Hoping to have a direct impact on the Canadian
constitution and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, five organizations

Having been established in 1972, the institute has been researching, educating, and communicating
their ideas, hypotheses, and arguments ever since. The institute s influence on many Christian
individuals cannot be overlooked. The many adults and teenagers have been taught that the earth is
young and there is no evolution. It would be incorrect to say that the institute should get all the
credit for developing, researching, and spreading the ideas, but it had a significant role. The sole
purpose of the Institute of Creation Research s existence as outlined on their website was and is to
conduct scientific research within the realms of origins and earth history, and then to educate the
public both formally and informally through graduate and professional training programs, through
conferences and seminars around the country, and through books, magazines, and media
presentations. The research institute works in many different fields such as looking at earth
science or life science. Throughout any kind of research, the institution mainly focuses on the
validity of the Bible and the use of scripture to explain science. As the the institute states, ICR is
committed to the absolute authority of the inerrant Word of God. It believes that science can only
agree with the Bible because God made the world. Therefore, since science correlates with the
Bible, Genesis 1 11 must be factual and historical. This would mean that the six days

Harold And Maude Essay
Films are almost always centred around people, or aliens or animals with human like qualities.
The purpose of film is storytelling, and the best of storytellers allow their listeners to see the world
in a different way, to put themselves into the shoes of a character in the story, to insert themselves
where they see fit. Harold and Maudeis no different. Despite its age, the 1971 cult classic Harold
and Maude reaches out for that part of us that we all know is a little odd, that part of us that we
want to hide but at the same time know needs to be addressed for the uniqueness of our personal
selves. What s most interesting about the film is how it documents transitions between characters,
not just through the plot but through the cinematography... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Across different cultures, different colours represent different things. Because of how American
this movie is, Harold and Maude take on a north American colour scheme when trying to
represent ideas on screen. At the beginning of the movie, dominant colours are black and white,
representing simplicity and death. For the first 30 minutes of the film, there is barley a hint of
any bright colour to be seen, aside from the white walls of Harold s psychiatrist s office. Here,
black is the obvious symbol of death which encompasses the main points of the movie and
becomes easily associated with Harold, the boy obsessed with death (the white, instead of
representing purity in its traditional sense, can represent sanitization or a sort of cleansing that his
psychiatrist is trying to impose upon Harold). Clothing wise, Maude s outfits are either stand out
colours like those she wears to funerals, or earthy tones, which could have been forth with the
intention that Maude is one with the earth, as her character is routinely trying to help the planet,
for example when she would protest in her youth and in the moving of the tree from the city to a
forest. Of course, because of Maude, Harold abandons his darkened suits and ties and adopts a
more youthful, colourful wardrobe, his clothes reflect him coming back to life so to

An Initial Link Effect On Gambling Behavior
Suboptimal choice: An initial link effect on gambling behaviour
Introduction
Human gambling often involves the decision to choose a low probability pay off, with the illusion
of gaining quick and easy money, over a high probability pay off. This reflects a form of
suboptimal choice behaviour. Suboptimal choice refers to the choice that does not result in the
highest overall reinforcement one could achieve. The probability of actually winning is slim to
none when gambling, but these behaviours are significantly popular. One of the most insidious
behaviour humans engage in is compulsive gambling, which had been associated with several
negative outcomes for the compulsive gambler and their loved ones. Thus, it is important to
understand why humans make suboptimal choices and ultimately know how to reduce the
probability of such choices to occur (Fantino, Navarro, O daly, 2005). Research on this topic aims to
investigate the underlying mechanisms involved such as the environmental factors influencing
suboptimal behaviour, and the behavioural process in making decisions.
Several animal studies have been used to investigate the underlying mechanisms of this suboptimal
choice behaviour (Cowie, Davison, Elliffe, 2011; Gipson, Alessandri, Zentall, 2009; Jimenez
Gomez Shahan, 2012; McDevitt, Dunn, Spetch, Ludvig, 2016; Spetch, Mondloch, Belke, Dunn,
1994; Stagner Zentall, 2010; Zentall, 2014). The use of animal studies is particularly powerful in

Analysis Of The Book Picks Up Again
Below, the original transcript of the book picks up again; written with virtually zero knowledge of
A.I. technology. It shows the demonic involvement with The Mark of The Beast.
What if the Mark of the Beast was something super natural? Something directly linked to satanic
forces? A blend of technology wedded together with demonic possession? What if the delusion was
so great that The Antichrist and the False Prophet convinced the world by their signs and wonders
that humanity could become gods, and live forever simply by taking the Mark of the Beast? Are
there other clues that may suggest that The Antichrist will try to pull off the greatest deception of
all time? Notice:
Then the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star from heaven which had fallen to the earth; and the
key of the bottomless pit was given to him. 2 He opened the bottomless pit, and smoke went up
out of the pit, like the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by the
smoke of the pit. 3 Then out of the smoke came locusts upon the earth, and power was given them,
as the scorpions of the earth have power. 4 They were told not to hurt the grass of the earth, nor
any green thing, nor any tree, but only the men who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads.
5 And they were not permitted to kill anyone, but to torment for five months; and their torment was
like the torment of a scorpion when it stings a man. 6 And in those days men will seek death and
will not find it; they will long

One of my great difficulties with Kant s moral philosophy...
One of my great difficulties with Kant s moral philosophy is that it suggests that our moral
obligations leave us helpless when dealing with evil. Kant s theory sets a high ideal of conduct
and tells us to live up to that ideal regardless of what other persons are doing. Imagine you are a
character in a Shakespearean play and are watching your father getting murdered. He is the King
and you aspire that one day you will take his place (Even though you know it won t happen,
because you re a woman). Your brother takes the initiate to kill him and take his place. I m sure
you would not be thinking oh, it s fine that he killed your father because being king is a great
thing and it doesn t matter how or why he got there. Most likely you d be... Show more content on

Kant s idea seems to be that we treat someone as an end only insofar as we act toward him or her
in a way that he or she can understand as appropriate or justified: we should be able to explain
our reasons in such a way that the person will see the reasonableness of acting in the way we
propose. Thus, for example, Kant writes: he who is thinking of making a lying promise to others
will see at once that he would be using another human being merely as a means, without the latter
at the same time containing in himself the end. For he whom I propose by such a promise to use
for my own purposes cannot possibly assent to my mode of acting toward him, and therefore
cannot himself contain the end of this action. What is ruled out by this idea appears to be actions
which treat others in such a way that they do not have the opportunity to consent to what we are
doing. So we treat others as mere means when we force them to do something, or when we obtain
their consent through pressure or dishonesty. That s something I think is special about being human
having a normative self conception, wanting, to respect yourself, thinking of yourself as worthy or
unworthy, rating yourself, especially now with media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram,
and even online dating sites. It s a condition that gives a strange extra dimension to human life,
both a special source of pride and interest and a profound cause of suffering. Some animals

Essay on On the Genealogy of Morality
Friedrich Nietzsche s On the Genealogy of Morality includes his theory on man s development of
bad conscience. Nietzsche believes that when transitioning from a free roaming individual to a
member of a community, man had to suppress his will to power, his natural instinct of freedom
(59). The governing community threatened its members with punishment for violation of its laws,
its morality of customs, thereby creating a uniform and predictable man (36). With fear of
punishment curtailing his behavior, man was no longer allowed the freedom to indulge his every
instinct. He turned his aggressive focus inward, became ashamed of his natural animal instincts,
judged himself as inherently evil, and developed a bad conscience (46).... Show more content on

Man s development of bad conscience is a complicated process that sees its beginnings in slave
morality s doubling of the doer and the deed. According to Nietzsche, the slave (the weaker man)
had developed ressentiment towards the noble (the stronger man), labeling the noble as evil and
blaming him for slave s suffering (20 22). The slave separated the noble (the doer) from his
instinctive actions (the deeds) and claimed the noble possessed free will; the slave believed the
strong are free to be weak (26). The slave set up the ideal of his own weak and passive instincts
being good and the strong and active instincts of the nobles being evil (26 27). As stated by
JHarden, when defining his weakness as good, the slave turned [his] natural condition of suffering
at the hands of others into a condition which should be desired (JHarden). As religions developed,
and the slave morality became dominant, this ideal of good and evil prevailed and forced man to
become conscious of his instincts as separate from himself, something he could control.
In Nietzsche s account, the original free roaming man lacked memory. To be happy and to not
hold on to the pain of unpleasant memories, man possessed an active ability to forget (36). Man s
memory developed as he formed relationships and began making promises to repay debts to his
creditors. He had to remember to repay on time or face the pain of punishment a pain that the
creditor of this relationship took

The Founder Of Steve Jobs
Introduction Apple Inc. had very small beginnings. The co founder, Steve Jobs, was born in San
Francisco, California in 1955. He was adopted by Clara and Paul Jobs, where he was given the
names Steven Paul Jobs. The family loved in what is now known as Silicon Valley. As a child,
Steve and his father worked on electronics in their garage. Here Steve was taught how to take a
part and put back together gadgets and that became a hobby if his throughout his childhood.
Jobs was an innovative and intelligent thinker. He tested so well in school that he was proposed
to skip ahead, but his parent declined. While Steve attended Homestead High School, he met
Steve Wozniak. Wozniak eventually became Jobs future partner and co founder of Apple. In a
2007 interview with PC World, Steve Wozniak told of how he and Jobs worked together so well:
We both loved electronics and the way we used to hook up digital chips, Wozniak said. Very few
people, especially back then, had any idea what chips were, how they worked and what they could
do. I had designed many computers, so I was way ahead of him in electronics and computer design,
but we still had common interests. We both had pretty much sort of an independent attitude about
things in the world... They went on to be one of the most innovative partners of our time. Upon
graduation, Jobs attended Reed College in Portland Oregon. Realizing it wasn t for him, he

During the first eight days, the participants gathered and prepared the bodies for the reburial.
Relatives of the deceased took out their remains, and the corpses, in various degrees of
putrefaction. Flesh and skin were removed from the corpses and the bones were individually
cleaned. They were wrapped again in another set of beaver furs. Generally women carried out
this task, and any sign of revulsion was traditionally discouraged. Wrapped in fur packages, the
bones were returned to the homes of relatives, where a feast was held in memory of the dead.
Gifts and offerings were placed next to these packages, and visitors were welcomed and treated

Bergerac Systems: The Challenge of Backward Integration
Abstract
Veterinary expenditure has been on an increasing trend due to the increase in pet ownership in the
United States. Bergerac is a company producing equipments used for testing pet patients in the
veterinarian clinics. Omnivue is one of the most successful equipments produced by the company,
which is priced at a competitive rate to attract lower and middle sized veterinarians. The production
of Omnivue involves the use of plastics and chemical reagents supplied by two major suppliers,

Hence, manufacturing department should not interfere in the distribution department, and the latter

Strategic Alternative 2 Backward Integration
Backward integration is a type of vertical integration in which a company takes control over its
suppliers. It is a form of acquisition of the intermediary players involved in supplying the raw
materials used in the production process of the firm. Raw materials, intermediate manufacturing and
assembly are controlled by the firm whereas distribution to the end customer is done by a third
party company. In this way, company increases production efficiency and gains a competitive
advantage by lowering its production cost.
Bergerac can opt for the buy option and implement its backward integration by acquiring
GenieTech. GenieTech can provide the company with eight efficient molding machines for the
acquisition price of $ 5.75 million. The price includes experienced labor force and management.
Bergerac can fulfill its chemical reagent demand by using 4 out of 8 moulds provided in the
acquisition. Rest of the presses can be used in the expansion process or can be used to meet the
demand of a third party. This investment can result in the reduction of overhead expenses by
twenty six percent per unit. Bergerac can pay the amount over a period of five years making the

Women s Marches Analysis
David Brooks, from the New York Times, asserts that the women s marches will not be effective
because they focus on the wrong issues such as climate change and equal pay (Brooks). These
issues are for the upper middle class and do not center around diversity, but rather prioritize
identity politics which is a tendency for people to form political alliances with those of the same
religion, race, ethnicity, etc. Diversity plays a major role in America and it is important for
everyone to embrace it. Brooks also says that another reason the women s marches will not be a
success is because there is too big a gap between the marches and the Democratic and Republican
Parties (Brooks). In order for something to occur, a political party has to

Theme Of Nature In Victor Frankenstein
Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of
heaven, (mathew 19:14). This sentiment can be applied to many aspects in Mary Shelley s
gothic novel Frankenstein; From Victor frankenstein s idolatry by his parents to Victor s own
dereliction of his creation even stretching to victor s foil Robert Walton whose feeling of
isolation has familial ties attached to it. Shelley explores the multiple thematic subjects of nurture
V.S. nature, responsibility, and negligence thus perpetuating the thought that man is a direct
product if his environment. The way Robert Walton was raised contributes to his longing for
fulfillment and his want to be more than he is. Robert longs to be accepted and he fills this
voyage will do just that. I shall satiate my ardent curiosity...and may tread a land never before
imprinted by the foot of man, (Shelley 2).Robert feels this voyage will validate him. Shelley
herself subtly indicts Victor s parents in exactly this way; and [shelley] suggests an even subtler
subtext of family conflict in the letters Walton writes to Margaret, (Claridge). Robert wants this
voyage to give him the recognition he lacks. It can be argued this is due to a lack of acceptance by
his Father. these volumes were my study day and night...my father s dying injunction had forbidden
my uncle to allow me to embark in a seafaring life, (Shelley 2). Waltons affluent background and
wealth allows him to throw all caution to the wind like

It is often asked why you should budget. It is so boring. I don t have time to budget. Lots of
excuses. But the truth is budgeting is very helpful and beneficial to you and your family. Here are
5 Reasons Budgeting Can Improve Your Life.
1. Reduce / Eliminate Debt
The number one reason given for making a budget is to reduce your overall debt and to eventually
eliminate debt from your financial life totally. Budgeting is a tool by which you take back control
of your cash flow. You remove the majority of the spontaneous spending and you plan ahead of
time on how your money will be spent. It eliminates the feeling of no control and returns those
controls back to you.
2. Build Savings
Budgeting is not just for being rid of debt. Once you have paid off all of your debt you should
continue to budget. Where before you were directing your money were to go to get out from under
that debt burden, now you can direct your money where to go for savings and investment purposes.
Once you get to this stage of budgeting, budgeting

Fellow Citizens Of America
Fellow Citizens of the United States of America:
I am honored to be here today with all of you showing the strength of the Constitution,
democracy, and the American people. As we gather here today, a new chapter is beginning in
America. Hopefully, a better chapter. One that will be written in history books and remembered
as a Golden Age. I have struggled for years to help improve our glorious country and protect the
its citizens. From my years on the Senate working for equal pay for women and as a governor in
California bringing California to number one in education test score nationwide. The American
people have been with me through it all. Telling me what they need and helping me be able to

Psychodynamic Disability
Abstract
Physical disability causes not only physical, but also psychological and emotional issues in
people. Some psychological effects include depression, isolation, fear, anger, and a sense of loss
after a debilitating injury. These reactions are caused by the dramatic changes in their lives, both
socially and functionally. In order to gain back the most physical function possible, a patient must
first address and cope with the psychological aspects of the disability. If a patient does not overcome
each psychological stage that accompanies the disability, it is unlikely that they will gain the same
level of function nor be as emotionally content with their life if they had done so.
A debilitating injury causes not only a lack of traditional ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The first was formed from the theories of loss and grief, while the second is based on the
psychological theory of stress. The stage model was the first model used in the field of athletic
rehabilitation and is linked with the theories of loss and grief, meaning the patient feels as if
they have lost an important part of their life through the injury. (Tatsumi, 2014) The ideal
psychological condition for full recovery is one in which the injured knows of the difficulties,
but controls their emotions in order to determine what is necessary for recovery. (Tatsumi,
1998) According to Britton W Brewer, the stage model was lacking in predictive value, and he
proposed a cognitive appraisal model as a replacement. The cognitive appraisal model was
formed from the theory of cognitive appraisal for stress and coping , the work of Richard
Lazarus and Susan Folkman. In this model, the injured person s assessment of the injury
determines their emotional reaction along with their behavioral reaction, meaning how well they
will respond to rehabilitation efforts. This model is based on cognitive behavioral therapy, and
was designed to change the athletes negative views about their injuries as well as educate and
encourage them about their options in recovery. It became a common method of speeding up the
process of rehabilitation among athletes. (Tatsumi 2014) The stages of this model include denial,
anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance, and can occur in any order. It is crucial that they
occur, and the lack of these emotions can be a sign of a potential problem. (Petitpas, 1995)
Combined with grief therapy, the stage model) elicits grief to promote acceptance and true mental
recovery. In a sense, the stage model was very effective. However, the model which states that
injured athletes must overcome the grief stage in order to make

Jose Hendo Research Paper
This article by Colin Hancock and Heenali Patel, discusses how two women, Jose Hendo, Juliana
Nasasira, and Isabella Asiimwe, are trying to change Uganda s fashion industry by using tree
bark as a role in their clothing making. These two women have used a fabric called bark cloth,
which came from Uganda s trees from over 600 years ago. Jose Hendo, upcoming designer,
thought this was a great idea for her because she aimed to help in bringing back this ancient
material trend from many years ago. Although what these ladies are crafting are very beautiful
fashionpieces, business is going to be very harsh for them. Uganda is known as one of the poorest

This is a very unique process of creating fashion. The use of tree bark goes way back until 600
years ago from an ancient culture. However, Uganda s fashion industry struggles a lot because
this unique clothing does come with a price. Many people who can actually afford these clothes
are very rare because Uganda s economy has very low income like many other countries in Africa.
It also costs a lot of money to even produce the material because you need workers to mass
produce the items which leads to money. Isabella Asiimwe came up with the idea of using
Facebook as a gateway to expanding the tree bark material styled clothing. This idea could help
Isabella expand her profits throughout not only Africa but maybe through Milan, the fashion
capital of the world. This is a very interesting topic because fashion is always known as cotton,
polyester, and many synthetic materials. Bark cloth is such a cultural material to use because you
know it s handmade and worth more because of its sense of being made by a natural resource.
Therefore, many others will come to buy this product because now a days, people are starting to
get interested in the handmade things. I strongly believe this is a very good step in helping to
boost Uganda s fashion industry and maybe their economy in the soon

Fear In The Most Powerful Motivator, By Robert Evans...
Fear is a negative word when it comes to mind and an unwanted feeling. It is something that is
dangerous, painful, and threatening to us. A lot of people do not think of it as a motivator. In fact,
it is the most potent motivator according to Robert Evans Wilson Jr., author of The Most Powerful
Motivator. Fearis what keeps us from injuries, alive, provoke fights, and prevent us from making
mistakes (Wilson, 2009). Fear as a motivator also is a pain in the ass. In the book March, there
were many situations where fear was fought against to obtain equal rights. The African American
fear the ongoing racism, and they turned it around and used it as a motivator.
Fear is what keeps people brave; One example was at the very beginning of the book before
chapter one, it showed a graphic scene of peaceful African Americans marching across a bridge.
Hosea asked John, Can you swim? John replied, No. Hosea replied, Neither can I, but we might
have to. The Armed police were on the other side yelling to turn around. Instead, they kneel. The
cops ended up violently beating them up. In Understanding Comics, Scott talked about emotions
through vibrations of the lettering style; it tells an ongoing struggle of sounds. On page eight where
cops were beating up the African Americans, had different vibration lettering in and out of balloons.

Industrial America from the American Steel Industry to the Early 1970 s
The steel industry has been profoundly important to the development of USA by its value of
output, input to the American manufacturing industries and in terms of the extent of its
employment in the past. It s been important because of its political clout of its corporations and
finally it s been important for strategic reasons.
Background to the American Steel Industry
The industry dates from mid 19th century when it grew out of the iron industry. There was huge
demand for steel following the end of the Civil War and the building of the great trans continental

allowed lower grade taconite ores to be beneficiated and so enabled them to bear the transport costs

Demand for Steel: This continued to rise in aggregate throughout much of the first half of the 20th
century. The nature of the demand altered however. Much less steel was now needed for rails, but
structural steel became increasingly important as did rods, wire, tubes and pipes; steel was needed
for tinplate and also very significant amounts were demanded by the transport industries.
Organisation of the industry: At the turn of the century, there was much horizontal integration and
merger activity reflecting, amongst other things, a desire to reduce competition and to increase the
scale of enterprises. Some companies became involved in vertical integration, being particularly

Learnability of a Language Essay
Learnability of a Language
I.
A child must achieve competence with an infinite language based on a finite number of heard
sentences. This is the essence of Noam Chomsky s poverty of the stimulus argument. As originally
presented, it made a case for nativism, forcing empiricist theories to explain how such competence
is achievable. In Stephen Pinker s Language Learnability and Language Development, he uses
learnability both as a challenge to theories of language acquisition, and as a heuristic for evaluating
them. Terrence Deacon, in The Symbolic Species, while dismissive of most of Chomskyan
linguistics, still sees the learnability problem as a challenge to any theory that hopes to explain
human linguistic knowledge. I will begin ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They also forbid transformations from applying to already transformed data. These two constraints
strongly limit the context freeness of language. By doing so, only a finite number of sentences at a
certain level of nesting are allowed; after enough time, the learner can conclude that all unseen
sentences of that depth are ungrammatical. These strong constraints are not arbitrary: Wexler and
Culicover found that most proposed transformations fit the two conditions. Also, Chomsky
independently concluded from examining linguistic data that a similar process, the subjacency
principle, was operating (Pinker 1979).
Pinker, too, concludes that the scope of possible languages is limited: Children acquire language by
exploiting rich formal and substantive constraints on the types of rules that languages may
have...[the child] entertains a small subset of the hypotheses consistent with the data (1984, p. 358).
Pinker concludes that constraints, including word order and phrase structure geometry (e.g.
subjacency) aid the learning of grammars (1984, p. 358).
Deacon s response to Gold s argument does not make any specific claims about the set of possible
grammars. However, according to Deacon s theory, one would expect to find a plentitude of
simplifying linguistic universals arising from the coevolution of language to

Immanuel Kant s Perpetual Peace
Although raised in the Christian faith, Immanuel Kant desired to approach the possibility of
reaching perpetual peace using reason, and natural laws alone. In Perpetual Peace: A Philosophical
Sketch, Kant explains the necessities required within a society that could bring about a form of
perpetual peace. In doing so, Kant s argument mostly focused on the avoidance of war, and keeping
peace within the states. Although he envisioned the possibility of this peace occurring within a
society, I argue that his notion of perpetual peace actually happening is inevitable. Of course, there
are countless ways of approaching the argument against Kant. Therefore, by using the writings of

She states that this force enslaves man, force before which man s flesh shrinks away. She goes
about to answer the problem of X acting out in a superior way onto another person, and explains
that this force turns that person into a thing. The force imposed onto them not only degrades
them into a slave, but eventually kills their own sense of humanity and possibly their own lives.
Now drawing this back to Fahon perspective, it could be understood that both find a problem
when two forces first interact with each other. When the two are drastically different from one
another, the more advanced and developed culture is most likely going to feel superior to the
other. This then often causes the dominant culture to treat itself as the force Weil describes, and
degrades the others into things. Additionally, Weil also stresses that this force not only destroys
the one being suppressed, but also the one using the force. She explains that force is at pitless to
the man who possesses it, or thinks he does, as it is to its victims; the second it crushes, the first
it intoxicates. This description could be explained in history when looking back onto the
exercises conducted by the Nazi Party. Those who seen as being inferior by the Nazi s were
degraded into things, and eventually killed. However, Weil would also say that the force imposed
by them also caused them to turn into irrational, senseless beings. While using the force, they lost
their sense of thinking rationally, and basically in themselves too became a thing . This again is just
another problem that has shown to occur when one culture takes on the feeling of superiority over

What is conformity? To put it simply, it means to adhere to societal standards or norms .
Adolescents are particularly susceptible to such; when they begin to separate from their family and

expectations from their parental figures. Conforming to social norms help them redefine

while brass pricing rose 25%. As a result, February 2018 net purchases increased to $149k or 23.2%
of sales compared with $109k or 19.8% of sales in the same period last year. As with other

Charlotte Perkins Gilman s Cupid in the Kitchen
Charlotte Perkins Gilman s Cupid in the Kitchen
As a reader in the 1990 s it s tempting to see Charlotte Perkins Gilman s Cupid in the Kitchen as
revolutionary and ahead of its time. She proposes the complete professionalization of the nutritive
and execretive functions of society, a radical, if not revolutionary notion. However, in the light of
the fin de siecle birth of the modern feminist movement, Gilman is but one voice in many crying
for economic and social justice for women. In effect, the rhetorical situation of 1898 demanded
and created this discourse as it does all discourse (Bitzer 5). Gilman s Cupid is a natural and elegant
response to the conditions which created it: the continuing surplus of unmarried ... Show more

This event also inspired Gilman s work. In this respect, Gilman s Cupid is neither revolutionary
nor ahead of its time. That it bemoans the status of women in society and demands new
opportunities for employment makes this piece more typical than remarkable. That is not to say
that it is trivial. Gilman s book was both topical and significant in 1898. But what s most
interesting in the 1990 s is how her work differs from that of her contemporaries. What makes it
stand out? How is it revolutionary, and why has it been anthologized? To answer these questions,
the reader must follow the work to where the energy in the prose leads. This calls for a close
examination of the most striking feature of her work, the proposal itself.
Gilman s vision is revolutionary, and in some respects, prophetic. She proposes that the domestic
chores of cleaning and nutrition be professionalized. Because they are so important, she argues,
these tasks should be performed by well educated and trained professionals. She suggests that urban
families living in flats and apartments could eat at a central, professionally staffed kitchen. In the
suburbs, several houses could be linked by a kitchen in a similar way (Gilman 217 19).
Her system offers several advantages. Obviously, people s nutritional requirements could be better
met by a centralized, professionally staffed kitchen. In all

Revelations Of Blind Faith In Raymond Carvers Cathedral
Revelations of Blind faith and its Social Impact in Raymond Carvers Cathedral
[Cathedral is the story of a husband meeting his wife s blind friend whom she values highly; the
experience also allows the husband to get over his prejudice against the blind in general and the
blind man.]
In Carvers Cathedral, blindness does not equate to the physically unseeing, but to those who are
spiritually ignorant or doubtful. The exploration of the main characters disbelief, his interaction of
doubt toward his antagonist, and the epiphany he eventually has are all relevant to the theme of
literal blindness versus spiritual blindness; these events will ultimately alter the main characters
views of occurrences with Faith, along with his subjective opinions on any occurrences that need
faith to be understood. The ambiguous husband as a representative of the mass blindness that the
public has, not only illustrates their reaction to literal occurrences of people different from
themselves, but spiritual/mental doubt toward people that hold faith which is unknown to them.
Carver s lack of description for the husband, except for his generic, ignorant, and sometimes
offensive views, craft him as a sort of everyman throughout the story. Each situation in which the
blind man breaks the depicted and societally expectant stereotype the husband is forced to endure,
and observe these unexpected interactions that are foreign to him. An example would be his dislike
for Robert s bare eyes, and how

Physical Causes And Complications Of Polycystic Ovary...
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder among women of
reproductive age and is caused by an imbalance of a woman s female sex hormones, resulting in
higher levels of the male hormone, androgen and have irregular periods.
The ovaries may develop numerous small collections of fluid (follicles) and fail to regularly
release eggs. This makes it difficult for women to get pregnant.
The presence of androgen may result in physical signs, such as excess facial and body hair
(hirsutism), occasionally severe acne and male pattern baldness.
Due to the hormone imbalance, a woman with PCOS is more prone to developing diabetes and heart
issues.
You should see a specialist, gynecologists if you are experiencing the following

In addition, your specialist may suggest
A pelvic exam to check your reproductive organs for masses, growths or other abnormalities.
Blood tests to measure hormone levels with additional tests for glucose tolerance and fasting
cholesterol and triglyceride levels due to increased risk of developing diabetes and heart problems
An ultrasound to check the appearance of your ovaries and the thickness of the lining of your uterus.
PCOS treatment focuses on managing your individual concerns, such as infertility, hirsutism, acne
or obesity. Specific treatment might involve the following
Weight loss might improve your symptoms, help with infertility and increase the effectiveness of
the medications
Combination birth control pills that contain estrogen and progestin decrease androgen production
and regulate estrogen. Effective hormone regulation can lower your risk of endometrial cancer and
reduce abnormal bleeding, excess hair growth and acne.
oTaking progestin alone can regulate your periods and protect against endometrial cancer. However,
it cannot improve androgen levels and will not prevent pregnancy from occurring.
To address ovulation issues, Clomiphene (an oral anti estrogen

Theresa Sauterr What s On Your Mind
THE CRITIQUE ESSAY
Theresa Sauter in her article What s on your mind? Writing on Facebook as a tool for self
formation explores various instances on how updating profiles and statuses on Facebook can reveal
self formation with attachment to historical roots. The article explores past examples of self writing
and puts considerations on discontinuities and continuities between the modern and old practices.
She reports that the discontinuities presents non technologically and historically way of thinking
about new media technologies use in the modern societies that fully understands the users more
than any form of communication. Sauter argues that with inception of technological tools, social

In her analysis, she presents how history has influenced the modern self writing, and how the
transfer of the writing process has been intertwined with the modern technology systems. She
presents scenarios that make us believe that writing is not only an art of communication but a
system used to reveal oneself and understand self. The practice is as old as time and it is part of the
human nature. She has supported most of her arguments creatively, by using both the modern and
old sources to present a clear transition and connection that is encompassed in the art of writing for
self formation. For one to understand the present systems, it is important to dig deep into history
(Fischhoff, 2013). Sauter has creatively presented historical context of self writing in the past by
exploring the ancient Greek askesis. In her narration she has depended greatly on Foucault works to
present the philosophical aspect in the art of writing. Her chronological presentations provide a
vivid understanding on writing transition and its effect to the modern systems. She has also used
Christian confessional, romantic autobiography, liberation and transgression and Writing in
psychology to present a clear insight on writing and its effect on self formation (Sauter, 2014). Her
discussions and presentations are well structured to accommodate conflicting

Social Darwinism in Cyberpunk Literature Essay
In the 1870s, the English sociologist Herbert Spencer applied Charles Darwin s theories of
biological evolution to human behavior and institutions. Spencer used the idea of survival of
the fittest in biology and theorized human society had evolved the same way (Cooper 15).
Social Darwinism, as Spencer s theory is called, pits everyone against each other to survive in the
world where humans are soldiers in a war for survival. If a person is poor, it is their fault and no
one should help that person rise above the poverty status. If a person is rich, they are worthy of
the position based on their actions, even if morally wrong. So if one is poor, the person will be
weeded out of society while the rich survive.
The Social Darwinism of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not just the strong will survive, but the one with the strongest technology will triumph. This is
Cyberpunk.
For example, the story Burning Chrome by William Gibson illustrates the genre s theme of
characters manipulating technology to survive. The protagonists of Gibson s story are
Automatic Jack and Bobby Quine, a couple of hackers waiting for their big score to come
through. They need the financial windfall quickly too, since Bobby is loosing his edge at the
computer console and isn t getting any younger. He was twenty eight, Bobby, and that s old for a
console cowboy, (Gibson 170). Jack s job is to simply keep up with the hottest software to give the
pair a greater edge.
In general Gibson is describing two hackers losing the evolutionary battle for survival. At age
twenty eight, Bobby is already outdated. Cyberpunk is quick and dirty when it comes to survival.
The evolutionary fight is hard and normally a character has one shot, like these two characters.
What Jack and Bobby need is something to place them above the rest of the hacker world, and in
Cyberpunk that can only be found though manipulating technology. This edge above competition
comes in the form of a black object:
It was obviously some kind of plug in military program. Out of the mailer, it looked like the
magazine of a small automatic rifle, coated with nonreflected black plastic. The edges and corners
showed bright metal, it had been knocked around for a while. (Gibson

  • 5. The Segregation Of Disabled Canadian Citizens The social, political and economic conditions during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in Canada fostered the segregation of disabled Canadian citizens. Prior to the 1980 s, this segregated population was viewed as incapable individuals who were dependent on others. As a result, disabled Canadians were denied opportunities to fully exercise their civil rights (Galer, 2015). At the dawn of the DisabilityRights Movement in 1980, Canadian legislators were willing and prepared to ignore the rights of Canadians with disabilities. However, throughout the decade, Canadian citizens with disabilities and their supporters fought back and proved to the world that the voices of the disenfranchised could make a difference (Peters, 2004). Five briefs submitted to the Special Joint Committee of the House of Commons and the Senate in 1980 and 1981 regarding disability rights, reflected and supported the efforts of the Disability Rights Movementand significantly contributed to its evolution. The Special Joint Committee of the House of Commons and the Senate was implemented in 1980 in the wake of the Quebec referendum on independence. The goal of the committee was to hear submissions from the public on amendments to the Constitution. Harold and Maudeis no different. Despite its age, the 1971 cult classic Harold and Maude reaches out for that part of us that we all know is a little odd, that part of us that we want to hide but at the same time know needs to be addressed for the uniqueness of our personal selves. Across different cultures, different colours represent different things. Because of how American this movie is, Harold and Maude take on a north American colour scheme when trying to represent ideas on screen. At the beginning of the movie, dominant colours are black and white, representing simplicity and death. For the first 30 minutes of the film, there is barley a hint of any bright colour to be seen, aside from the white walls of Harold s psychiatrist s office. Here, black is the obvious symbol of death which encompasses the main points of the movie and becomes easily associated with Harold, the boy obsessed with death (the white, instead of representing purity in its traditional sense, can represent sanitization or a sort of cleansing that his psychiatrist is trying to impose upon Harold). Clothing wise, Maude s outfits are either stand out colours like those she wears to funerals, or earthy tones, which could have been forth with the intention that Maude is one with the earth, as her character is routinely trying to help the planet, for example when she would protest in her youth and in the moving of the tree from the city to a forest. • 8. An Initial Link Effect On Gambling Behavior Suboptimal choice: An initial link effect on gambling behaviour Introduction Human gambling often involves the decision to choose a low probability pay off, with the illusion of gaining quick and easy money, over a high probability pay off. This reflects a form of suboptimal choice behaviour. Suboptimal choice refers to the choice that does not result in the highest overall reinforcement one could achieve. The probability of actually winning is slim to none when gambling, but these behaviours are significantly popular. One of the most insidious behaviour humans engage in is compulsive gambling, which had been associated with several negative outcomes for the compulsive gambler and their loved ones. Thus, it is important to understand why humans make suboptimal choices and ultimately know how to reduce the probability of such choices to occur (Fantino, Navarro, O daly, 2005). Research on this topic aims to investigate the underlying mechanisms involved such as the environmental factors influencing suboptimal behaviour, and the behavioural process in making decisions. Several animal studies have been used to investigate the underlying mechanisms of this suboptimal choice behaviour (Cowie, Davison, Elliffe, 2011; Gipson, Alessandri, Zentall, 2009; Jimenez Gomez Shahan, 2012; McDevitt, Dunn, Spetch, Ludvig, 2016; Spetch, Mondloch, Belke, Dunn, 1994; Stagner Zentall, 2010; Zentall, 2014). • 10. One of my great difficulties with Kant s moral philosophy... One of my great difficulties with Kant s moral philosophy is that it suggests that our moral obligations leave us helpless when dealing with evil. Kant s theory sets a high ideal of conduct and tells us to live up to that ideal regardless of what other persons are doing. Imagine you are a character in a Shakespearean play and are watching your father getting murdered. He is the King and you aspire that one day you will take his place (Even though you know it won t happen, because you re a woman). Your brother takes the initiate to kill him and take his place. I m sure you would not be thinking oh, it s fine that he killed your father because being king is a great thing and it doesn t matter how or why he got there. Most likely you d be... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Kant s idea seems to be that we treat someone as an end only insofar as we act toward him or her in a way that he or she can understand as appropriate or justified: we should be able to explain our reasons in such a way that the person will see the reasonableness of acting in the way we propose. Thus, for example, Kant writes: he who is thinking of making a lying promise to others will see at once that he would be using another human being merely as a means, without the latter at the same time containing in himself the end. For he whom I propose by such a promise to use for my own purposes cannot possibly assent to my mode of acting toward him, and therefore cannot himself contain the end of this action. What is ruled out by this idea appears to be actions which treat others in such a way that they do not have the opportunity to consent to what we are doing. So we treat others as mere means when we force them to do something, or when we obtain their consent through pressure or dishonesty. That s something I think is special about being human having a normative self conception, wanting, to respect yourself, thinking of yourself as worthy or unworthy, rating yourself, especially now with media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and even online dating sites. It s a condition that gives a strange extra dimension to human life, both a special source of pride and interest and a profound cause of suffering. Some animals certainly want to be ... • 12. Essay on On the Genealogy of Morality Friedrich Nietzsche s On the Genealogy of Morality includes his theory on man s development of bad conscience. Nietzsche believes that when transitioning from a free roaming individual to a member of a community, man had to suppress his will to power, his natural instinct of freedom (59). The governing community threatened its members with punishment for violation of its laws, its morality of customs, thereby creating a uniform and predictable man (36). With fear of punishment curtailing his behavior, man was no longer allowed the freedom to indulge his every instinct. He turned his aggressive focus inward, became ashamed of his natural animal instincts, judged himself as inherently evil, and developed a bad conscience (46).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Man s development of bad conscience is a complicated process that sees its beginnings in slave morality s doubling of the doer and the deed. According to Nietzsche, the slave (the weaker man) had developed ressentiment towards the noble (the stronger man), labeling the noble as evil and blaming him for slave s suffering (20 22). The slave separated the noble (the doer) from his instinctive actions (the deeds) and claimed the noble possessed free will; the slave believed the strong are free to be weak (26). The slave set up the ideal of his own weak and passive instincts being good and the strong and active instincts of the nobles being evil (26 27). As stated by JHarden, when defining his weakness as good, the slave turned [his] natural condition of suffering at the hands of others into a condition which should be desired (JHarden). As religions developed, and the slave morality became dominant, this ideal of good and evil prevailed and forced man to become conscious of his instincts as separate from himself, something he could control. In Nietzsche s account, the original free roaming man lacked memory. To be happy and to not hold on to the pain of unpleasant memories, man possessed an active ability to forget (36). Man s memory developed as he formed relationships and began making promises to repay debts to his creditors. He had to remember to repay on time or face the pain of punishment a pain that the creditor of this relationship took ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This sentiment can be applied to many aspects in Mary Shelley s gothic novel Frankenstein; From Victor frankenstein s idolatry by his parents to Victor s own dereliction of his creation even stretching to victor s foil Robert Walton whose feeling of isolation has familial ties attached to it. Shelley explores the multiple thematic subjects of nurture V.S. nature, responsibility, and negligence thus perpetuating the thought that man is a direct product if his environment. The way Robert Walton was raised contributes to his longing for fulfillment and his want to be more than he is. Robert longs to be accepted and he fills this voyage will do just that. Some psychological effects include depression, isolation, fear, anger, and a sense of loss after a debilitating injury. These reactions are caused by the dramatic changes in their lives, both socially and functionally. In order to gain back the most physical function possible, a patient must first address and cope with the psychological aspects of the disability. The stage model was the first model used in the field of athletic rehabilitation and is linked with the theories of loss and grief, meaning the patient feels as if they have lost an important part of their life through the injury. (Tatsumi, 2014) The ideal psychological condition for full recovery is one in which the injured knows of the difficulties, but controls their emotions in order to determine what is necessary for recovery. (Tatsumi, 1998) According to Britton W Brewer, the stage model was lacking in predictive value, and he proposed a cognitive appraisal model as a replacement. The cognitive appraisal model was formed from the theory of cognitive appraisal for stress and coping , the work of Richard Lazarus and Susan Folkman. In this model, the injured person s assessment of the injury determines their emotional reaction along with their behavioral reaction, meaning how well they will respond to rehabilitation efforts. This model is based on cognitive behavioral therapy, and was designed to change the athletes negative views about their injuries as well as educate and encourage them about their options in recovery. It became a common method of speeding up the process of rehabilitation among athletes. (Tatsumi 2014) The stages of this model include denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance, and can occur in any order. It is crucial that they occur, and the lack of these emotions can be a sign of a potential problem. (Petitpas, 1995) Combined with grief therapy, the stage model) elicits grief to promote acceptance and true mental recovery. In a sense, the stage model was very effective. Jose Hendo Research Paper This article by Colin Hancock and Heenali Patel, discusses how two women, Jose Hendo, Juliana Nasasira, and Isabella Asiimwe, are trying to change Uganda s fashion industry by using tree bark as a role in their clothing making. These two women have used a fabric called bark cloth, which came from Uganda s trees from over 600 years ago. Jose Hendo, upcoming designer, thought this was a great idea for her because she aimed to help in bringing back this ancient material trend from many years ago. The use of tree bark goes way back until 600 years ago from an ancient culture. However, Uganda s fashion industry struggles a lot because this unique clothing does come with a price. Many people who can actually afford these clothes are very rare because Uganda s economy has very low income like many other countries in Africa. It also costs a lot of money to even produce the material because you need workers to mass produce the items which leads to money. Isabella Asiimwe came up with the idea of using Facebook as a gateway to expanding the tree bark material styled clothing. This idea could help Isabella expand her profits throughout not only Africa but maybe through Milan, the fashion capital of the world. This is a very interesting topic because fashion is always known as cotton, polyester, and many synthetic materials. Bark cloth is such a cultural material to use because you know it s handmade and worth more because of its sense of being made by a natural resource. It is something that is dangerous, painful, and threatening to us. A lot of people do not think of it as a motivator. In fact, it is the most potent motivator according to Robert Evans Wilson Jr., author of The Most Powerful Motivator. Fearis what keeps us from injuries, alive, provoke fights, and prevent us from making mistakes (Wilson, 2009). Fear as a motivator also is a pain in the ass. This is the essence of Noam Chomsky s poverty of the stimulus argument. As originally presented, it made a case for nativism, forcing empiricist theories to explain how such competence is achievable. In Stephen Pinker s Language Learnability and Language Development, he uses learnability both as a challenge to theories of language acquisition, and as a heuristic for evaluating them. These two constraints strongly limit the context freeness of language. By doing so, only a finite number of sentences at a certain level of nesting are allowed; after enough time, the learner can conclude that all unseen sentences of that depth are ungrammatical. These strong constraints are not arbitrary: Wexler and Culicover found that most proposed transformations fit the two conditions. Also, Chomsky independently concluded from examining linguistic data that a similar process, the subjacency principle, was operating (Pinker 1979). Pinker, too, concludes that the scope of possible languages is limited: Children acquire language by exploiting rich formal and substantive constraints on the types of rules that languages may have...[the child] entertains a small subset of the hypotheses consistent with the data (1984, p. 358). Pinker concludes that constraints, including word order and phrase structure geometry (e.g. subjacency) aid the learning of grammars (1984, p. 358). The force imposed onto them not only degrades them into a slave, but eventually kills their own sense of humanity and possibly their own lives. Now drawing this back to Fahon perspective, it could be understood that both find a problem when two forces first interact with each other. When the two are drastically different from one another, the more advanced and developed culture is most likely going to feel superior to the other. This then often causes the dominant culture to treat itself as the force Weil describes, and degrades the others into things. Additionally, Weil also stresses that this force not only destroys the one being suppressed, but also the one using the force. She explains that force is at pitless to the man who possesses it, or thinks he does, as it is to its victims; the second it crushes, the first it intoxicates. This description could be explained in history when looking back onto the exercises conducted by the Nazi Party. Those who seen as being inferior by the Nazi s were degraded into things, and eventually killed. However, Weil would also say that the force imposed by them also caused them to turn into irrational, senseless beings. Gilman s book was both topical and significant in 1898. But what s most interesting in the 1990 s is how her work differs from that of her contemporaries. What makes it stand out? How is it revolutionary, and why has it been anthologized? To answer these questions, the reader must follow the work to where the energy in the prose leads. This calls for a close examination of the most striking feature of her work, the proposal itself. Gilman s vision is revolutionary, and in some respects, prophetic. She suggests that urban families living in flats and apartments could eat at a central, professionally staffed kitchen. In the suburbs, several houses could be linked by a kitchen in a similar way (Gilman 217 19). Her system offers several advantages. Obviously, people s nutritional requirements could be better met by a centralized, professionally staffed kitchen. In all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Revelations Of Blind Faith In Raymond Carvers Cathedral Revelations of Blind faith and its Social Impact in Raymond Carvers Cathedral [Cathedral is the story of a husband meeting his wife s blind friend whom she values highly; the experience also allows the husband to get over his prejudice against the blind in general and the blind man.] In Carvers Cathedral, blindness does not equate to the physically unseeing, but to those who are spiritually ignorant or doubtful. The exploration of the main characters disbelief, his interaction of doubt toward his antagonist, and the epiphany he eventually has are all relevant to the theme of literal blindness versus spiritual blindness; these events will ultimately alter the main characters views of occurrences with Faith, along with his subjective opinions on any occurrences that need faith to be understood. The ambiguous husband as a representative of the mass blindness that the public has, not only illustrates their reaction to literal occurrences of people different from themselves, but spiritual/mental doubt toward people that hold faith which is unknown to them. Carver s lack of description for the husband, except for his generic, ignorant, and sometimes offensive views, craft him as a sort of everyman throughout the story. Each situation in which the blind man breaks the depicted and societally expectant stereotype the husband is forced to endure, and observe these unexpected interactions that are foreign to him. An example would be his dislike for Robert s bare eyes, and how ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Writing on Facebook as a tool for self formation explores various instances on how updating profiles and statuses on Facebook can reveal self formation with attachment to historical roots. The article explores past examples of self writing and puts considerations on discontinuities and continuities between the modern and old practices. In her analysis, she presents how history has influenced the modern self writing, and how the transfer of the writing process has been intertwined with the modern technology systems. She presents scenarios that make us believe that writing is not only an art of communication but a system used to reveal oneself and understand self. The practice is as old as time and it is part of the human nature. She has supported most of her arguments creatively, by using both the modern and old sources to present a clear transition and connection that is encompassed in the art of writing for self formation. For one to understand the present systems, it is important to dig deep into history (Fischhoff, 2013). Sauter has creatively presented historical context of self writing in the past by exploring the ancient Greek askesis. In her narration she has depended greatly on Foucault works to present the philosophical aspect in the art of writing. Her chronological presentations provide a vivid understanding on writing transition and its effect to the modern systems. She has also used Christian confessional, romantic autobiography, liberation and transgression and Writing in psychology to present a clear insight on writing and its effect on self formation (Sauter, 2014). • 45. Social Darwinism in Cyberpunk Literature Essay In the 1870s, the English sociologist Herbert Spencer applied Charles Darwin s theories of biological evolution to human behavior and institutions. Spencer used the idea of survival of the fittest in biology and theorized human society had evolved the same way (Cooper 15). Social Darwinism, as Spencer s theory is called, pits everyone against each other to survive in the world where humans are soldiers in a war for survival. If a person is poor, it is their fault and no one should help that person rise above the poverty status. If a person is rich, they are worthy of the position based on their actions, even if morally wrong. So if one is poor, the person will be weeded out of society while the rich survive. The Social Darwinism of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Not just the strong will survive, but the one with the strongest technology will triumph. This is Cyberpunk. For example, the story Burning Chrome by William Gibson illustrates the genre s theme of characters manipulating technology to survive. The protagonists of Gibson s story are Automatic Jack and Bobby Quine, a couple of hackers waiting for their big score to come through. They need the financial windfall quickly too, since Bobby is loosing his edge at the computer console and isn t getting any younger. He was twenty eight, Bobby, and that s old for a console cowboy, (Gibson 170). Jack s job is to simply keep up with the hottest software to give the pair a greater edge. In general Gibson is describing two hackers losing the evolutionary battle for survival. At age twenty eight, Bobby is already outdated. Cyberpunk is quick and dirty when it comes to survival. The evolutionary fight is hard and normally a character has one shot, like these two characters. What Jack and Bobby need is something to place them above the rest of the hacker world, and in Cyberpunk that can only be found though manipulating technology. This edge above competition comes in the form of a black object: It was obviously some kind of plug in military program. Out of the mailer, it looked like the magazine of a small automatic rifle, coated with nonreflected black plastic. The edges and corners showed bright metal, it had been knocked around for a while.
