well known emblem. To remove it entirely or replace it with another, invented symbolwould
completely disorient the reader; but some might claim that this is the effect at which Spiegelman is

Beowulf
Although a story with a seemingly unknown origin, Seamus Heaney s translation of Beowulf shows
the culture that birthed the tale as well as their values. It showcases Pagan values, due to influences
of where the story first developed and shows where their hero Beowulf emerged from. It also
presents Christian values, which were ingrained into the story after Christian monks of British
origin first transcribed the Norse tale. The audience in which the story was written to, in the present
day, has not particularly shown these Christian values which Beowulf encases; young male readers
tend to think of Beowulf as the hero, when in fact the Christians wanted to show that Wiglaf was.
Because of the popularity and likeability of Pagan values in the story by young males, the ones
who were supposed to read the tale, the Christian monks failed in their mission of trying to show
that a good hero is a Christian one.
In Beowulf s fight with Grendel, he is displayed with apposition, putting the idea of him being the
hero who saves the kingdom by slaying monsters. Doing this, an audience wouldn t seem to care
as much about his flaws pride, blind following, being immoral but rather focuses on his actions.
When Grendel first tries to attack Beowulf the alert hero s comeback and armlock forestalled him

Silver Linings Playbook (2012), Patrizio Pat Solitano, Jr, played by Bradley Cooper, is shown
to be diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Though Cooper s acting of Pat is more grounded than
other interpretations of the disorder. The conflict within himself is cured by the end of the film
when Pat falls in love with and starts dating Jennifer Lawrence s character, Tiffany. In reality,
bipolar disorder cannot be cured but instead can be treated. In the movie, actor Bradley Cooper
plays a man with bipolar disorder who is being released from a psychiatric hospital. He soon
connects emotionally with a quirky young woman, played by Jennifer Lawrence, who has
struggled with her own mental health issues, largely brought on by her husband s
death.Psychologists and other mental health professional are touchy about how they are
depicted in movies. So are doctors, police officers and lawyers. Given the widespread influence
of movies, any profession is naturally going to be invested in whether its members are portrayed
positively and accurately. After all, misrepresentations could potentially lead to public relations
problems. In the case of psychotherapy, it might mean that someone will not seek help because
they have developed a negative perception of counseling. Or in the case of mental disorder,
inaccurate depictions could increase the stigmatization of various kinds of difficulties and
diagnoses. However, as I point out in my book, The Psychology at the Movies, there is a danger in
psychologists being too uptight and literal in commenting about Hollywood movies. Film makers
are not in the same business as psychologists. Their job is to tell dramatic, compelling stories, and
sometimes they distort reality in order to accomplish this task.
