Olympe De Gouges Gender Roles
Born on the year of 1748 as the daughter of a butcher, Olympe de Gouges lived a humble life. In this
time period and on a butchers salary Gouges s only chance at education was to teach herself. Using
her education Olympe de Gouges became a spokesperson for the working french woman. In
Declaration of the rights of woman and the female citizenship written in the year of 1791 she Writes to
the national assembly, and the general public who can read. Here Gouges challenges the the ideal

Moralism In The Movie High Noon
High Noon, the shocking American film from the 1950 s, shines light on the true nature of one
standing their ground when the world is against them. This movie was written to represent the Red
Scare, when Hollywood members were falsely accused of being communist. These actors were forced
to give names of others who they thought were communists or else they would be punished. If the
communist actors gave out names, however, they would be ruining other s careers. Some of the people
refused to give names. Like the Marshall in the movie High Noon, these brave actors stood up for
what they believed in. Nevertheless, the other members of Hollywood around were not very willing to
support. They were like the townspeople in High Noon. They didn t want to risk their own reputation
and safety. In the film, Zinnemann successfully revealed the hardships of those falsely convicted, and
exposed the hearts of those who saw the false conviction, but did nothing about it in order to protect
themselves. Directed by Fred Zinnemann, this thrilling motion picture s main character is a marshal
named Cain, played by the actor Gary Cooper. He s asked by the townspeople to relocate because a
few villains plan to kill him at high noon. Instead of heeding to the advice of the townspeople, Cain
stands up for what he believes in, and stays to fight all four of the villains. People slowly remove
themselves from him, and refuse to fight by his side. He has to face his enemies alone.
High Noon is like many other works of literature which praised heroes who fought the fight alone.
Helen Hannah, in the movie Judgment was mocked and put on trial for her religious beliefs. Tousle, in
the novel Straw into Gold, broke out of the crowd, and spoke on behalf of innocent people being
claimed as rebels. These heroes were ready and willing to put their life on the line for what they
believe. However, it was not easy for any of them. Just like the other authors, Zinnemann wanted the
audience to see the internal struggle the hero was having. The look on the marshal s face, the
weariness in his gait, and his conflicting thoughts when he walked into the bar, and punched one of the
men in the face, and was about to leave on the horse, but changed his

The Elements Of Buddhist Art
In Ancient Pakistan, an area of land known as Gandhara produced a great deal of Buddhist art. The
works had a very specific style and set of influences that have been compared by art historians
throughout time. The image of what a people call the Gandharan Buddha is easily recognizable for its
distinct features. However, this image is not always universal between Gandharan art. Different works
can share similar features and distinction, but can also have many differences. These can lie in not
only the subjects and how they are approached, but also in the way different areas of the region
approach their art. In order to fully understand Gandharan Buddhist art, it is important to look at
pieces with different subjects, mediums, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These physical attributes, along with symbolic garb and poses are fairly universal across the Asian
continent and the Buddhist art that was created over time. Gandhara was a region between modern day
Pakistan and Afghanistan. Specifically, during the Kushan Period, lasting from the late 1st c. BCE to
the 3rd c. CE, many images of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas were created with similar styles. With its
close proximity to the Mediterranean and the carrying of culture along the silk road, artistic influence
from Greek and Roman civilization found its way into works made at this time. Great attention was
given to the face. A content expression, with rounded eyebrows that connect to a flat nose, hollow
eyes without pupils, and plump limps can be found on not only statues of Buddhist figures, but also on
statues of the Roman gods and goddesses. A great detail went into the hair and depiction of the human
form across these two art styles. Just by looking at a statue of the Buddha from Gandhara and a roman
statue of an important figure, it looks like they could be from the same place. However, it was the way
the silk road allowed cultures to interact and influence each other that caused this connection. Looking
at the Gandharan pieces found at the Sackler Gallery, it is easy to see how the Roman influence
carried over to many works of art. Looking specifically at a statue of the head of the Buddha (Figure

Title: Mystery discoveries
We all love to think about what else could be out there that we don t know about. We love mysteries.
And when we get a glimpse of something mysterious, we are intrigued and want to learn more. On
some special occasions, you get a glimpse of something truly mysterious. For example, in 2013, an
Iranian vessel found the dead carcass of an unknown sea creature in the Persian Gulf. Now, three years
later, people are still coming up with theories on what it could be. It has remained an exciting mystery
for us all during these past few years.
Let s take a look at some more mysteries!

At the time it was found, it was floating very close to an oil rig. This might mean something, and it
might not at the same time. Whatever this carcass is, it s worth looking at and trying to figure out why
it died and where it was going.
Huge photo credit: http://allday.com/
In most pictures, it s difficult to realize just how massive this thing is. Here, you can see its
enormousness compared to the ship and the people investigating the mass. It s huge! It s crazy to see
how big some of the creatures in the ocean are. We don t always get to see them because they are
always hidden under the water, but when we do get to see them, it s awesome. The people on this boat
must have been thrilled to see a creature this big so close up and personal! It must have been a very
exciting day.
Float photo credit: http://allday.com/
When this carcass was found, it was floating just at the top of the water. It would undulate with the
flow of the waves as they rocked it. Something like this appears a little frightening when you see it
just floating on top of the water like that. You never know what s going to be in the ocean and you
never know what you re going to see next. I know I would have been a little nervous seeing this just
float right past my boat! You have to be careful out there in the depths of the sea, and if I saw this I
know I would have my

The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is a silent 1920s black white horror film that describes a traumatizing tale
told by Francis about Alan, his friend and his own experiences with the enigmatic Dr Caligari and his
companion, the somnambulist, Cesare. The image taken from the film depicts Dr Caligari on stage
hawking his exhibit of Cesare the somnambulist at the fair to a crowd of people gathered in front of
him. As it is a silent film and hearing dialogue was not yet an option, an individual s costume and
appearance, combined with their acting, was the way their character s role or personality was
conveyed. Caligari is fitted with dark clothing and makeup, yet combined with his glasses and shock
of white hair envelop him with a peculiar atmosphere

Loft Of Flowers And Paperman
Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom. Aristotle Human connection can be involved in the
process of uncovering what is hidden through emotional and unexpected discoveries. This concept is
portrayed in the poem Tuft of Flowers by Robert Frost and the short film Paperman by Disney.
Dissatisfaction with one s surroundings and life can lead one to rediscover what is already known this
being through self discovery and emotional discovery. This is revealed in the poem After Apple
Picking by Robert Frost and the picture book The Red Tree by Shaun Tan. By analysing these texts
and concepts the process of uncovering what is hidden and re discovering what is already known will
be shown. Both the poem and the short film follow the process of uncovering what is hidden through
human connection. The idea of human connection is introduced in Tuft of ... Show more content on

This revelation came from the connection he gained when meeting the girl and then trying to gain her
attention by throwing paper aeroplanes. The moment of realisation came when sat at his desk, it is
shown by his facial expression but is symbolised through light and shadow. His expression is at first
saddened and defeated as paperwork is dumped on his desk, then it changes as he realises his self
worth and rushes out the door. In this shot one side of his face is in light and the other in shadow, this
symbolises his change in way of thinking. This journey of discovery is then resolved by finally
uncovering what is hidden through human connection. Tuft of flowers has the final discovery; we may
work alone but always have connection with others, Men work together , I told him from the heart,
Whether they work together or apart . This final line, complete with a rhyming couplet, ties this idea
and the poem together giving a sense of complete understanding and

Margaret Atwood Handmaid Quotes
1. On page 26, Margaret Atwood first mentions the names of other Handmaids. This is from the quote:
Offwayne. No. Ofwarren. What jumped out at me here was how all of the mentioned handmaids seem
to have their names beginning with Of . First of all, the letter O looks like a womb or an egg. This
possibly hints at their already evident role in society to procreate and have children for the
commanders. But, if the reader goes a step further, it is evident all the handmaids have names that
begin with Of . This alludes to the principle that the handmaids belong to their commanders, and that
they have to do their duty, and nothing more. They are simply owned, like tools. The society went so
far as to even include this ownership in their names. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are many instances in the novel, where Offred pauses in the middle of her story and in a way
complains to the audience about how hard it is to tell this story. For example: It s also a story I m
telling, in my head, as I go along. Tell, rather than write, because I have nothing to write with and
writing is in any case forbidden. But if it s a story, even in my head ... But it s not good, because I
know you can t. (39 40) On numerous occasions, Offred tells the reader that it is easier to tell if you
think that it is just a story, and never happened to her for real. These bits of emotion make us
sympathetic for the protagonist, and make the reader more deeply believe what she is telling us. In
addition, such quotes offer an explanation to why the protagonist sometimes randomly switches
topics, and why she tells us her story in such a short and choppy manner. Atwood does this to show
that Offred s emotions are seeping through, that she is a human just like us. This enables the reader to
better connect to the story. Atwood simply does this to make the story more believable by including
these details of completely normal human emotions when telling a hard story. This enables the reader
to better compare the novel s dystopian society with reality, thus making any messages Atwood is
trying to convey more

Drinking In College Essay
The graduating Class of 2015 quickly learned that college really is the best time of our lives; but with
great power, comes great responsibility. Drinking at a frat party sounds like a lot of fun until you wake
up at 6 in the morning at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. While many students drink, not many know
the health and personal risks that come making the decision to consume alcohol.
According to the Science Inside Alcohol Project, a study funded by the National Institute on Alcohol
Abuse and Alcoholism, people who consume too much alcohol pass out when the large amount of
alcohol overwhelms the Reticular Activating System. This is the system that decides when one is
conscious or not. Because alcohol is a depressant, it depresses the central nervous system. Passing out
is the body s attempt to preserve its energy to keep performing the basic bodily functions that keep
people alive, such as maintaining heartbeat and breathing.
Psychological effects of excessive alcohol consumption include greater likelihood of committing
suicide and contracting hepatic encephalopathy. Hepatic encephalopathy is a worsening of brain
function that occurs when the liver is no longer able to remove toxic substances in the blood (Tracy,
2012). If this occurs, one could experience differences in personality, overall mood, issues with
coordination, and decrease in function of longterm memory and attentions spans. Other psychological
effects of excessive alcohol exposure may include panic

Summary Of The Conquest Of Hawaii
After reading the article, The Conquest of Hawaii, my understanding of how Hawaii became a part of
the United States has changed drastically. Originally, I had thought that Hawaii was conquered by the
Europeans with reckless violence and torture towards the Hawaiians like how the Europeans
conquered the Native American s land. I also had thought that the modern Hawaiian attitudes towards
becoming U.S. citizens were narrow minded and hard headed because it was their land that the
Europeans were taking away. After reading the article, I learned that Hawaii wasn t automatically
conquered, but violence did occur and the Hawaiian s attitude towards annexation was supportive.
According to the article, the conquest of the Hawaii started when a group ... Show more content on

As a result, thousands of commoners arrived Hawaii to cut and haul sandalwood to the beaches. Food
production suffered and starvation left many Natives in violent deaths. By 1843, whalers arrived
Hawaii about the same time as the missioners did and by that time whaling became common in
Hawaii. While Hawaiian merchants and chiefs got richer from the whaling industry, most Native
Hawaiians suffered greatly. Hawaiians were excellent merchants, and young men were hired as
sailors. Large numbers of native sailors on their journey did not return. Prostitution flourished, and
native women were left barren by the very diseases spread by others. In 1778, when Cook arrived the
Islands, the native population decreased to 200,000 and 300,000. In the 1830s, the sugar industry was
introduced to Hawaii and by the mid 19th century, the production of sugar flourished in Hawaii.
American missioners and planters brought about great changes to political, cultural, economic, and
religious life, and in 1840 a constitutional monarchy was established, stripping the Hawaii monarchy s

Hamlet: Seems Versus Is
Throughout the tragic play, Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, there are a multitude of characters who
seem to act one way but, below the surface, are completely different than they are portrayed. These
characters hide behind their own disguise, masking their true identities. The motif Seems Versus Is is
brought to the reader s attention in Hamlet because it shows that although people might seem to be
one way, they can be completely different on the inside. These disguises serve as obstacles for Hamlet
to overcome throughout the play.
Polonius, the chief counselor to the king, is a character who seems to be a loving, charismatic man and
father who only wants ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Claudius also seems like a respectable king because he mourns the death of King Hamlet and tells
[the] whole kingdom to be contracted in one brow of woe (21). Although Claudius seems to be a good
king who is deeply saddened by the death of the late King Hamlet, he is actually a horrible man who
murdered King Hamlet in a way most foul,...strange and unnatural (57). He took his crown and acted
as if his death was an accident. Claudius makes it difficult for Hamlet to uncover the truth behind his
actions because he constantly acts like nothing is ever wrong. After many different plots against
Claudius, Hamlet prevails and the real Claudius is exposed. Claudius played an important role in the
play because he reinforced the motif Seems Versus Is and showed the reader that although people can
come across as honest and respectable, deep down they can have an evil side.
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are characters in Hamlet who have a more complex side to them than
one might assume. Hamlet sees them as good friends who have always been there for him, such as
after his father s death when they came to visit [him]; no other occasion (99). Although they acted as
good friends to Hamlet, in reality they were manipulative and deceitful. The two characters had a
darker side because they acted as Claudius and Gertrude s spies. Near the end of the play, Claudius,
Rosencrantz, and Guildenstern

Black Decker
Background
Black and Decker (B amp;D) is a pioneer in portable power tools. In 1991, it is a $5 billion in sales
company with 29% of these sales coming from Power Tools and Accessories. B amp;D is the world s
larges producer of power tools and the U.S. market overall leader.
Problem Statement
B amp;D has a strong market share in the consumer and industrial markets, but is weak in the P T
market as it is currently experiencing decreased market share. In this segment, B amp;D is not
generating profits and, at the same time, retailers want more advertising allowances and rebates.
Analysis
The U.S. power tools market is divided into three segments: Consumer (home use buyers),

Consumer tools in the market are Black or Charcoal Grey. B amp;D uses Black for Consumer and
Charcoal Grey for Professional Grade tools, this lack of color differentiation makes it difficult for
purchasers to determine which products are Professional and which are Consumer, which may have
facilitated the use of B amp;D consumer grade products to professional tasks, thus generating an
inordinate high rate of failure. Conversely, other manufacturers use higher color differentiation and
use colors such as teal (Makita), red (Milwaukee), or green (Hitachi) to differentiate the P T products
from the black/charcoal grey consumer products.
Research on Tradesmen s brand perceptions shows that DeWalt, a B amp;D brand associated with
industrial yellow has a 70% awareness rating and is ranked by 63% of those in the P T market to be
One of the Best , which is much more than the 44% of people in this market who think the same of the
B amp;D brand. Although the purchase interest in DeWalt is 51% compared to 58% of DeWalt

Despite all of this, B amp;D strongest rival, Makita, exhibits a few weaknesses that can be exploited
by B amp;D. Customers, in general, have been exposed to positive Makita interactions; retailers on the
other hand have had a different experience. Makita, in general, did not support all of their retailers as

wider range of emotions, similar to other symphonies from the Romantic period. Beethoven was able
to draw from his own internal emotional struggle and reveal some of these insecurities through his
compositions but intensifying the Classical form and other practices.
Programme Music
During the Romanic period, there were many advances in regards to instrumentation, and the size of a
typical orchestra increased in size and range, adding in more instruments to the wind, brass and
percussion sections. Symphonie Fantastique, by Hector Berlioz, was no exception, and was written for
an extensive orchestra of 220 players, including, piccolos, flutes, oboes, horns, clarinets, bassoons,
cornets, trumpets, trombones, tuba (or ophicleides), timpani, bells, a wide variety of percussion, bells,
violins, violas, cellos and double basses. Through this symphony, various instruments have
programmatic purposes to develop the scene, such as the pizzicato strings in the 4th movement,
representing the head bouncing after he was decapitated, and the clarinet in E flat and bassoons in the
5th movement, depicting bubbles rising in a cauldron.
Both movements 4 and 5 were through composed, featuring various musical fragments and themes.
Movement 4 features two key themes in addition to the idée fixe, whilst Movement 5 centred around 3
musical themes; the Beloved (Harriet), the Great Shout, and the Fearsome Crowd. An idée fixe is a

Wal-Mart Scandal Essay
New York Times reporter David Barstow uncovered a shocking story against retail giant, Wal Mart.
His investigation started after Wal Mart shut down its internal investigation over the possible bribery
of Mexican officials. Wal Mart used these bribes to accelerate growth in their Mexican zoning areas.
These allegations surfaced when a Hispanic lawyer contacted Wal Mart headquarters in Bentonville
Arkansas. This lawyer had inside information on Wal Mart s bribes, as he represented them in their
acts. He was used as a middle man for Wal Mart s payoffs to these officials. Wal Mart took action in
defending its image. In 2005 the company launched an internal investigation that dug into the

Cicero said that he had done these deals for years while working for Wal Mart. Along with the
information they received from Mr. Cicero, the times also found government documents with evidence
of payoffs. These documents showed that within days of the money being given to the lawyers the
permits were granted. The Times have published new stories exposing the company further with
deeper information that they have gained through their investigation. Some of the information
includes: * Wal Mart pays $341,000 to officials in Mexico City to build a Sam s club. The building
was put in a densely populated area, and was done without a construction license, or an environmental
permit or and urban impact assessment, or a traffic permit. * Wal Mart bribes officials to build a vast
refrigerated distribution center in an environmentally fragile flood basin north of Mexico City in an
area where electricity is so scarce that many smaller developers turned away. The bribe for this case
was $765,000. * A zoning situation in Teotihuacan caused Wal Mart to make a payment of $52,000 to
enable them to build a store near a famous pyramid site. The citizens were enraged by the location of
the store but the protests were ignored and the Wal Mart was built. The mayor of Teotihuacan spent
$77,000 buying and renovating a ranch the next year. Unexpected on a $47,000 yearly salary. *

Richard Fairbanks and Takeshi Yasuda s Ceramics Essay
Richard Fairbanks and Takeshi Yasuda s Ceramics Richard Fairbanks, although many times
overlooked, was an important American ceramist. He was known as a loner and because of this he was
never really appreciated for his talent. Fairbanks was greatly influence by his professors. Professor
Paul Bonifas, who taught at the University of Washington, was one who left a huge impact on
Fairbanks work. Fairbanks created a system of sketching pottery profiles, which stemmed from

Instead of purist forms, Fairbanks explored the less traveled road of rough and crusty clay bodies,
which emerge, from the surface of the glaze. This in turn removed his pieces from any realm of

approaches that he was exposed to during his years. Fairbanks wrote, My eyes are lazy and don t see

long after the brief communication when the hands and the clay see each other, they know. They

Strategies For Preventing Guns From The Streets Of New Haven
For years, people in New Haven have been brainstorming strategies to help prevent gun violence in
the communities. With the identifying the factors contributing to gun violence, community organizers
have come up with strategies that are specifically related to them. The main priority is to completely
remove guns from the streets of New Haven. Right now, there are two gun buy back programs in New
Haven that are lead by Yale New haven Hospital and the New Haven Police Department (City Wide).
The purpose of this program is for people to turn in un registered guns and receive money in return.
Some argue that the gun buy back program does not prevent gun violence because they are taking
guns from law abiding citizens who would never use them in a crime and do not reach those who are
likely to use them in a crime (Cameron). In New Haven, guns in the streets travel from people to
people and at some point, it can fall into the hands of a person who is anticipating on shooting
someone. That is all that it takes. One of the most successful gun buy back programs held in new
Haven was August 6, 2016. That day, The New Haven Police Department was able to retrieve one
hundred and twenty seven operable firearms. They took in eighty five handguns, thirty eight rifles and
shotguns and four assault weapons (Wilkins). In the past five years, the New Haven Police
Department has collected over five hundred guns from the gun buy back programs. Going along with
the strategy to remove guns off of

Monkey Wrench Gang Analysis
Recently, the spread of urban America and governmental control has led to difficulties in finding the
once plentiful wild. People often venture out past city limits into what they perceive as wilderness to
leave society behind in hopes of coming to some major life changing self realization. They believe
that the wild will transform them. However, a deeper look into this fascination with wilderness reveals
that urbanization, and not the wild, results in personal, and societal, transformation. For this reason,
revisiting the wilderness does not create new qualities in individuals, but helps surface qualities that
those individuals already possessed. Evidence to support this claim exists in several popular pieces of
American literature, including Edward Abbey s Monkey Wrench Gang.
This thesis serves not to suggest that changes brought about by industrialization or urbanization ...

This increase in the quantity and geographical sprawl of cities, as well as our dependence on them
characterizes what we commonly know as urbanization. In his article, Urbanization, Mental Health,
and Social Deviancy, Anthony Marsella provides a more comprehensive definition, claiming that
urbanization causes an increase in population which impacts the way individuals in an area interact
with one another, resulting in behavior changes among the population such as differentiation,
segmentalization, segregation, and marginalization (625). Due to the implementation of city limits,
and due to the link that exists between urbanization and the development of cities, the beginning and
end of urban areas appears to be well

Amy Poehler Yes Please
It s called Yes Please because it is the constant struggle and often the right answer, (Poehler, xix). Yes

encompasses a wide range of topics from Poehler s career in comedy to how to treat yourself right.
Poehler makes many compelling statements, and tells rich stories about a variety of things throughout

The First World War began in Europe, but by the end of it, the United States had joined. Once
involved, President Woodrow Wilson had a huge effect on drawing new country lines. His decision
was influenced by how the war began, as a cry to have states independent from an empire, based on
ethnicities to avoid alliances similar to what started this war. This global and total war was the first of
its kind, which began in Europe from the assassination of Austria Hungary s heir to the throne,
Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife by Gavrillo Princip in Sarajevo. This local conflict quickly
grew out of control due to alliances across European countries and aggressive rulers and developed
into what is now known as the July Crisis . In the four years that this war was ongoing, the United

Intimidated High School Students
While there are benefits of attending college, there are also significant challenges that affect students.
Specifically, high school students in particular can be intimidated with the overall process of going to
college. For instance, finalizing paperwork, completing financial aid, adjusting to their new
environment, and meeting new people. In addition to these adjustment, students have to deal with the
increase costs, which makes college more expensive and less affordable for its students. The increase

Approximately 6 to 8 million animals are handled by animal shelters in the U.S. each year. Even

They would be forced to live in cramped cages or kennels for years, lonely and stressed, and other
animals would have to be turned away because there would be no room for them. Trying to build
enough animal shelters to keep up with the endless stream of homeless animals is like putting a

Euthanasia is sort of weird that way. I have seen totally objective (and even outright callous) pet
owners simply drop off their pet for euthanasia with no more respect or empathy than a robot. I have

the final moments of their pet s life. Maybe we humans are so close to our pets that we somehow
project our own humanity and mortality into them and we actually see ourselves at our own last
moments. Do some pet owners act out how they think they would view their own passing? On the
other hand, I have witnessed seemingly strong, objective individuals that seem to be somewhat cold
and distant who completely fall apart at the time of their pet s passing. The theme to keep in mind,
then, as you contemplate how YOU will act at your pet s final moments is to remember that
euthanasia is a completely personal experience. You have to decide what is best for you and your pet. I
have had people actually say to me I am sorry, Doctor, but I don t know how to act right now . Most

Courtly Love and Mediieval Romance
Introduction
The familiarity with the love tradition makes it easily mistakable for a natural and universal
phenomenon and even brings a laxity of enquiring into its origins. However, it is difficult of not
impossible to show love to be anything more than an artistic phenomenon or construct a literary per
formative innovation of Middle Ages. Courtly love was a medieval European formation of nobly, and
politely expressing love and admiration. Courtly love was secret and between members of the nobility.
(Simpson).
The term courtly love was first popularized by Gaston Paris in 1883. It has since come under a wide
variety of definitions and uses, even being brushed off as nineteenth century romantic fiction. Its

In essence, courtly love was an experience between erotic desire and spiritual attainment that now
seems contradictory as a love at once illicit and morally inspiring, passionate and disciplined,
mortifying and exalting, human and inspirational (Newman).
History
Many scholars who have believed that courtly love was a historical development rely on historical
literature. Courtly love is believed to have begun in southern France in the ducal princely courts of
Aquitaine, Provence, and Champagne, ducal Burgundy and the Norman Kingdom of Sicily, a
sufficiently peaceful yet isolated region, that was perfect to birth and develop such a movement from
around the time of the First Crusade in 1099. In fact, many literary giants (Avignon, Toulouse, Nimes
under the domaine of Eleanor, Duchess of Aquitaine) retreated in this region. In addition, the leisure
class, the wealthy, and the self sufficient society discovered a new craze in this area. The areas courts
attracted intellectuals from all over, as the South was more liberal and pluralistic, with Arabs, Jews
and Byzantines being among the residents of the area. Perhaps, even the men outnumbered the women
in South France.
Eleanor of Aquitaine brought the ideals of courtly love from Aquitaine to the court of France then to
England where she was a queen to two kings. Her daughter Marie, who was the Countess of
Champagne, introduced courtly love to the Count of

Wilfred Owen s Poems On The Futility Of War
Poems using strong poetic technique and devices are able to create a wide range of emotions from the
readers. Wilfred Owen s poetry effectively uses these poetic techniques and devices to not only create
unsettling images about war but to provide his opinion about war itself with the use of themes within
his poem. The use of these themes explored Owen s ideas on the futility of war and can be seen in the
poems: Anthem for Doomed Youth, Futility and The Next War. The poems provide unsettling images
and belief of war through the treatment of death, barbaric nature of war and the futility of war.
In majority of Owen s poem, he demonstrates the true image of war and the impact it has on the

The idea of the futility of war can be seen in the poem Strange Meeting, where the persona creates a
scenario of two opposing soldiers having a conversation in Hell. The line, The pity of war, the pity
war distilled uses repetition with the word pity to imply the pity that is felt for the soldiers that have
died at war. The use of the word distilled is indicating how war is attracting the concentration of many
people and that the soldiers are dying for pointless reasons, intensifying the pity felt on the soldiers.
Futility of war is again demonstrated in Owen s poem, Futility, in the final stanza with the rhetorical
question, Was it for this the clay grew tall? Owen use of imagery of clay grew tall is making a biblical
reference to humans being made by clay and questioning was the creation of humankind futile due to
the recurring inevitability of war and suffering. In the previous lines, Owen compares the sun with
God and is desperate to bring his comrades back to life, Woke, once, the clays of a cold star The use of
the oxymoron is Owen indicating that the sun is now weaker than it was previously. Owen is
explaining how futile the sun was to provide life on Earth if it is unable to bring back the dead. The
reference to a cold star is highlighting the life that was brought to Earth has now turned cold due to it
being destroyed and killed from war. This presents Owen s idea of the futility of war as it will result in

Slavery Essay
Slavery was ongoing in the southern states. In the 1800 s many white slave owners believed that the
African Americans were inferior to them despite the fact that all men are created equal . They were
forced into labor and treated like property. The slave owners justified their behavior and believed they
acted caring and conscientious to their slaves. Truthfully, however, the slaves were mostly treated very
badly, as Fredrick Douglas, a black slave, testifies. There were select groups of white men who
realized the abuses of slavery and worked to abolish it. Not many white people admired these
abolitionists, but as time went by their support was increased.

to rise above all limitations that white society imposed. Fredrick Douglas was born into slavery in

structures which are known to produce chemical signals in conjunction with the release of their urine.
In the lobster Homarus Americanus, urine signals are used as a form of chemical communication,
males use urine in the determination of dominance over other males as well as to allow females choice
of dominant males. On the other hand Homarus Americanus females urine actually reduces the

Any figures beyond the set up of these dissections are just to help illustrate what the Rosette glands
actually looked like, or a better understanding of the anatomy behind a cross sectioned nephropore (fig

nephropre areas of every examined lobster. Subtle differences were found within these rosettes, one
example being the cells within the rosettes either being rounded with many secretory granules, or
thinner cells with smaller granules with spaces between the cells. Other rosettes were more organized
into clusters of different sizes, and found within the connective tissue. These clusters were categorized
into two separate gland complexes, on medial to the ureter and the other later (fig 3a b). Other

some lobsters having anterior clusters which release the product a different way. Although this was far

EVM had become such a requirement that any project over $20 million must employ the EVM
standard. In a survey conducted in December 2005, only 33% of the federal department hired
personnel skilled in EVM. I was involved in a project that exposed the myths of EVM. The project
manager failed to understand the importance of EVM. The organization had contracted to have six
storage containers erected in the back of the company. The initial budget was $50, 000 dollars with a
completion date of 30 days within contract agreement. The WBS provided a breakdown at each level,
the amount of work to be performed, and the cost at each level. It is known that many projects require
a more in depth research of what is required for project success.
Even with prior planning uncertainties will happen. In this case, the contractor decided to outsource
the concreted for the paid. The problem is that the concrete was not with codes and had to be removed
and repoured. This delay caused budget overruns. This goes back to the quality not being measured in
the earned value management (EVM) system. The 30 day project turned into 60 days and was
ultimately over budget but the difference was paid by the contractor. Even

  • 3. Moralism In The Movie High Noon High Noon, the shocking American film from the 1950 s, shines light on the true nature of one standing their ground when the world is against them. This movie was written to represent the Red Scare, when Hollywood members were falsely accused of being communist. These actors were forced to give names of others who they thought were communists or else they would be punished. If the communist actors gave out names, however, they would be ruining other s careers. Some of the people refused to give names. Like the Marshall in the movie High Noon, these brave actors stood up for what they believed in. Nevertheless, the other members of Hollywood around were not very willing to support. They were like the townspeople in High Noon. They didn t want to risk their own reputation and safety. In the film, Zinnemann successfully revealed the hardships of those falsely convicted, and exposed the hearts of those who saw the false conviction, but did nothing about it in order to protect themselves. Directed by Fred Zinnemann, this thrilling motion picture s main character is a marshal named Cain, played by the actor Gary Cooper. He s asked by the townspeople to relocate because a few villains plan to kill him at high noon. Instead of heeding to the advice of the townspeople, Cain stands up for what he believes in, and stays to fight all four of the villains. People slowly remove themselves from him, and refuse to fight by his side. He has to face his enemies alone. High Noon is like many other works of literature which praised heroes who fought the fight alone. Helen Hannah, in the movie Judgment was mocked and put on trial for her religious beliefs. Tousle, in the novel Straw into Gold, broke out of the crowd, and spoke on behalf of innocent people being claimed as rebels. These heroes were ready and willing to put their life on the line for what they believe. However, it was not easy for any of them. Just like the other authors, Zinnemann wanted the audience to see the internal struggle the hero was having. The look on the marshal s face, the weariness in his gait, and his conflicting thoughts when he walked into the bar, and punched one of the men in the face, and was about to leave on the horse, but changed his ... • 4. The Elements Of Buddhist Art In Ancient Pakistan, an area of land known as Gandhara produced a great deal of Buddhist art. The works had a very specific style and set of influences that have been compared by art historians throughout time. The image of what a people call the Gandharan Buddha is easily recognizable for its distinct features. However, this image is not always universal between Gandharan art. Different works can share similar features and distinction, but can also have many differences. These can lie in not only the subjects and how they are approached, but also in the way different areas of the region approach their art. In order to fully understand Gandharan Buddhist art, it is important to look at pieces with different subjects, mediums, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These physical attributes, along with symbolic garb and poses are fairly universal across the Asian continent and the Buddhist art that was created over time. Gandhara was a region between modern day Pakistan and Afghanistan. Specifically, during the Kushan Period, lasting from the late 1st c. BCE to the 3rd c. CE, many images of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas were created with similar styles. With its close proximity to the Mediterranean and the carrying of culture along the silk road, artistic influence from Greek and Roman civilization found its way into works made at this time. Great attention was given to the face. A content expression, with rounded eyebrows that connect to a flat nose, hollow eyes without pupils, and plump limps can be found on not only statues of Buddhist figures, but also on statues of the Roman gods and goddesses. A great detail went into the hair and depiction of the human form across these two art styles. Just by looking at a statue of the Buddha from Gandhara and a roman statue of an important figure, it looks like they could be from the same place. However, it was the way the silk road allowed cultures to interact and influence each other that caused this connection. Looking at the Gandharan pieces found at the Sackler Gallery, it is easy to see how the Roman influence carried over to many works of art. Looking specifically at a statue of the head of the Buddha (Figure 1), one can get an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Notes On The Mystery Discoveries Goal: Slide Show For Real Cool Nation Word count in this document: 1230 Title: Mystery discoveries We all love to think about what else could be out there that we don t know about. We love mysteries. And when we get a glimpse of something mysterious, we are intrigued and want to learn more. On some special occasions, you get a glimpse of something truly mysterious. For example, in 2013, an Iranian vessel found the dead carcass of an unknown sea creature in the Persian Gulf. Now, three years later, people are still coming up with theories on what it could be. It has remained an exciting mystery for us all during these past few years. Let s take a look at some more mysteries! Iranian Vessell photo credit: http://allday.com/ ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At the time it was found, it was floating very close to an oil rig. This might mean something, and it might not at the same time. Whatever this carcass is, it s worth looking at and trying to figure out why it died and where it was going. Huge photo credit: http://allday.com/ In most pictures, it s difficult to realize just how massive this thing is. Here, you can see its enormousness compared to the ship and the people investigating the mass. It s huge! It s crazy to see how big some of the creatures in the ocean are. We don t always get to see them because they are always hidden under the water, but when we do get to see them, it s awesome. The people on this boat must have been thrilled to see a creature this big so close up and personal! It must have been a very exciting day. Float photo credit: http://allday.com/ When this carcass was found, it was floating just at the top of the water. It would undulate with the flow of the waves as they rocked it. Something like this appears a little frightening when you see it just floating on top of the water like that. You never know what s going to be in the ocean and you never know what you re going to see next. I know I would have been a little nervous seeing this just float right past my boat! You have to be careful out there in the depths of the sea, and if I saw this I know I would have my

The image taken from the film depicts Dr Caligari on stage hawking his exhibit of Cesare the somnambulist at the fair to a crowd of people gathered in front of him. As it is a silent film and hearing dialogue was not yet an option, an individual s costume and appearance, combined with their acting, was the way their character s role or personality was conveyed. Aristotle Human connection can be involved in the process of uncovering what is hidden through emotional and unexpected discoveries. This concept is portrayed in the poem Tuft of Flowers by Robert Frost and the short film Paperman by Disney. Dissatisfaction with one s surroundings and life can lead one to rediscover what is already known this being through self discovery and emotional discovery. This is revealed in the poem After Apple Picking by Robert Frost and the picture book The Red Tree by Shaun Tan. By analysing these texts and concepts the process of uncovering what is hidden and re discovering what is already known will be shown. In this shot one side of his face is in light and the other in shadow, this symbolises his change in way of thinking. • 9. Margaret Atwood Handmaid Quotes 1. On page 26, Margaret Atwood first mentions the names of other Handmaids. This is from the quote: Offwayne. No. Ofwarren. What jumped out at me here was how all of the mentioned handmaids seem to have their names beginning with Of . First of all, the letter O looks like a womb or an egg. This possibly hints at their already evident role in society to procreate and have children for the commanders. But, if the reader goes a step further, it is evident all the handmaids have names that begin with Of . This alludes to the principle that the handmaids belong to their commanders, and that they have to do their duty, and nothing more. They are simply owned, like tools. The society went so far as to even include this ownership in their names. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are many instances in the novel, where Offred pauses in the middle of her story and in a way complains to the audience about how hard it is to tell this story. (39 40) On numerous occasions, Offred tells the reader that it is easier to tell if you think that it is just a story, and never happened to her for real. These bits of emotion make us sympathetic for the protagonist, and make the reader more deeply believe what she is telling us. In addition, such quotes offer an explanation to why the protagonist sometimes randomly switches topics, and why she tells us her story in such a short and choppy manner. Atwood does this to show that Offred s emotions are seeping through, that she is a human just like us. This enables the reader to better connect to the story. • 10. Drinking In College Essay The graduating Class of 2015 quickly learned that college really is the best time of our lives; but with great power, comes great responsibility. Drinking at a frat party sounds like a lot of fun until you wake up at 6 in the morning at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. While many students drink, not many know the health and personal risks that come making the decision to consume alcohol. According to the Science Inside Alcohol Project, a study funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, people who consume too much alcohol pass out when the large amount of alcohol overwhelms the Reticular Activating System. This is the system that decides when one is conscious or not. Because alcohol is a depressant, it depresses the central nervous system. Passing out is the body s attempt to preserve its energy to keep performing the basic bodily functions that keep people alive, such as maintaining heartbeat and breathing. Psychological effects of excessive alcohol consumption include greater likelihood of committing suicide and contracting hepatic encephalopathy. Hepatic encephalopathy is a worsening of brain function that occurs when the liver is no longer able to remove toxic substances in the blood (Tracy, 2012). If this occurs, one could experience differences in personality, overall mood, issues with coordination, and decrease in function of longterm memory and attentions spans. With the identifying the factors contributing to gun violence, community organizers have come up with strategies that are specifically related to them. The main priority is to completely remove guns from the streets of New Haven. Right now, there are two gun buy back programs in New Haven that are lead by Yale New haven Hospital and the New Haven Police Department (City Wide). The purpose of this program is for people to turn in un registered guns and receive money in return. Some argue that the gun buy back program does not prevent gun violence because they are taking guns from law abiding citizens who would never use them in a crime and do not reach those who are likely to use them in a crime (Cameron). In New Haven, guns in the streets travel from people to people and at some point, it can fall into the hands of a person who is anticipating on shooting someone. That is all that it takes. However, a deeper look into this fascination with wilderness reveals that urbanization, and not the wild, results in personal, and societal, transformation. For this reason, revisiting the wilderness does not create new qualities in individuals, but helps surface qualities that those individuals already possessed. • 30. Animal Shelters In The United States Approximately 6 to 8 million animals are handled by animal shelters in the U.S. each year. Even though some are reclaimed or adopted, nearly 4 million unwanted dogs and cats are left with nowhere to go. Animal shelters cannot humanely house and support all these animals until their natural deaths. They would be forced to live in cramped cages or kennels for years, lonely and stressed, and other animals would have to be turned away because there would be no room for them. Trying to build enough animal shelters to keep up with the endless stream of homeless animals is like putting a bandage on a gunshot wound. Turning unwanted animals loose to roam the streets is not a humane option, either. If they don t starve, freeze, get hit by a car, or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Euthanasia is sort of weird that way. I have seen totally objective (and even outright callous) pet owners simply drop off their pet for euthanasia with no more respect or empathy than a robot. I have never been able to understand this type of pet owner who seems to be saying When you re dead, you re dead . Sort of like euthanasia is no big deal. However, they can still comfort or simply be with their pet at the time of euthanasia; and yet for their own reasons they choose to separate themselves from the final moments of their pet s life. Maybe we humans are so close to our pets that we somehow project our own humanity and mortality into them and we actually see ourselves at our own last moments. Do some pet owners act out how they think they would view their own passing? On the other hand, I have witnessed seemingly strong, objective individuals that seem to be somewhat cold and distant who completely fall apart at the time of their pet s passing. The theme to keep in mind, then, as you contemplate how YOU will act at your pet s final moments is to remember that euthanasia is a completely personal experience. You have to decide what is best for you and your pet. I have had people actually say to me I am sorry, Doctor, but I don t know how to act right now . Most people really have had no euthanasia guidelines to follow, had no firm ground on which to stand ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Courtly Love and Mediieval Romance Introduction The familiarity with the love tradition makes it easily mistakable for a natural and universal phenomenon and even brings a laxity of enquiring into its origins. However, it is difficult of not impossible to show love to be anything more than an artistic phenomenon or construct a literary per formative innovation of Middle Ages. Courtly love was a medieval European formation of nobly, and politely expressing love and admiration. Courtly love was secret and between members of the nobility. (Simpson). The term courtly love was first popularized by Gaston Paris in 1883. It has since come under a wide variety of definitions and uses, even being brushed off as nineteenth century romantic fiction. In essence, courtly love was an experience between erotic desire and spiritual attainment that now seems contradictory as a love at once illicit and morally inspiring, passionate and disciplined, mortifying and exalting, human and inspirational (Newman). History Many scholars who have believed that courtly love was a historical development rely on historical literature. Courtly love is believed to have begun in southern France in the ducal princely courts of Aquitaine, Provence, and Champagne, ducal Burgundy and the Norman Kingdom of Sicily, a sufficiently peaceful yet isolated region, that was perfect to birth and develop such a movement from around the time of the First Crusade in 1099. In fact, many literary giants (Avignon, Toulouse, Nimes under the domaine of Eleanor, Duchess of Aquitaine) retreated in this region. In addition, the leisure class, the wealthy, and the self sufficient society discovered a new craze in this area. The areas courts attracted intellectuals from all over, as the South was more liberal and pluralistic, with Arabs, Jews and Byzantines being among the residents of the area. Perhaps, even the men outnumbered the women in South France. Eleanor of Aquitaine brought the ideals of courtly love from Aquitaine to the court of France then to England where she was a queen to two kings. Her daughter Marie, who was the Countess of Champagne, introduced courtly love to the Count of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He came across a parting area between the trees and walked through. Across the raging river, he saw the magic harp of the legend. So it s true, it really is true. , he whispered to himself. Then he realized the raging river that stands between him and the harp, How am I going to cross that? Huh. He saw more sticks across the way and started to put them together to look like a raft. He then went to a tree nearby to cut a vine and tied the raft together. He pushed the raft onto the shore. Xavier and Buddy both got on the raft and with the walking stick as a paddle, they took off into the river. The raging river shook the raft so hard and Xavier managed to hold on. Wilfred Owen s poetry effectively uses these poetic techniques and devices to not only create unsettling images about war but to provide his opinion about war itself with the use of themes within his poem. The use of these themes explored Owen s ideas on the futility of war and can be seen in the poems: Anthem for Doomed Youth, Futility and The Next War. The poems provide unsettling images and belief of war through the treatment of death, barbaric nature of war and the futility of war. In majority of Owen s poem, he demonstrates the true image of war and the impact it has on the soldiers rather than masking it with the lies of pride ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The idea of the futility of war can be seen in the poem Strange Meeting, where the persona creates a scenario of two opposing soldiers having a conversation in Hell. The line, The pity of war, the pity war distilled uses repetition with the word pity to imply the pity that is felt for the soldiers that have died at war. The use of the word distilled is indicating how war is attracting the concentration of many people and that the soldiers are dying for pointless reasons, intensifying the pity felt on the soldiers. Futility of war is again demonstrated in Owen s poem, Futility, in the final stanza with the rhetorical question, Was it for this the clay grew tall? Owen use of imagery of clay grew tall is making a biblical reference to humans being made by clay and questioning was the creation of humankind futile due to the recurring inevitability of war and suffering. In the previous lines, Owen compares the sun with God and is desperate to bring his comrades back to life, Woke, once, the clays of a cold star The use of the oxymoron is Owen indicating that the sun is now weaker than it was previously. Owen is explaining how futile the sun was to provide life on Earth if it is unable to bring back the dead. The reference to a cold star is highlighting the life that was brought to Earth has now turned cold due to it being destroyed and killed from war. In the 1800 s many white slave owners believed that the African Americans were inferior to them despite the fact that all men are created equal . They were forced into labor and treated like property. The slave owners justified their behavior and believed they acted caring and conscientious to their slaves. Truthfully, however, the slaves were mostly treated very badly, as Fredrick Douglas, a black slave, testifies. There were select groups of white men who realized the abuses of slavery and worked to abolish it. Not many white people admired these abolitionists, but as time went by their support was increased. Some did hold jobs, such as artisans, craftsmen, or seamstresses. In the north, free blacks were faced with society that advocated segregation and job discrimination and offered only the lowest paying jobs to them. Fredrick Douglass, however, was able to rise above all limitations that white society imposed. Fredrick Douglas was born into slavery in 1817 and was taught how to read and write by the wife of one of his owners. She was told to stop by her husband because, as he said, reading would forever unfit him to be a slave . Douglas only studied harder when he realized that his knowledge could be his pathway to freedom. By 1838, Douglas held a skilled job in Baltimore. He worked well and earned high wages, but his slave owner took his pay each week. Douglas decided to escape after having an argument with his owner. He borrowed the identity and official papers of a free black sailor and went onto the train. He tasted freedom for the first when he reached New York. When Garrison heard Douglas speak about his experiences, he was impressed and sponsored Douglas as a lecturer for the American Anti Slavery society. The goal behind this study is to better identify the presence of these structures which are known to produce chemical signals in conjunction with the release of their urine. In the lobster Homarus Americanus, urine signals are used as a form of chemical communication, males use urine in the determination of dominance over other males as well as to allow females choice of dominant males. On the other hand Homarus Americanus females urine actually reduces the incidence of male aggression and increases male mating behavior. Any figures beyond the set up of these dissections are just to help illustrate what the Rosette glands actually looked like, or a better understanding of the anatomy behind a cross sectioned nephropore (fig 2a b). The results from these cross section figures showed that rosette glands could be identified in the nephropre areas of every examined lobster. Subtle differences were found within these rosettes, one example being the cells within the rosettes either being rounded with many secretory granules, or thinner cells with smaller granules with spaces between the cells. Other rosettes were more organized into clusters of different sizes, and found within the connective tissue. These clusters were categorized into two separate gland complexes, on medial to the ureter and the other later (fig 3a b). Other experiments focused on within this article looked at the size and orientation of these gland complexes in an effort to better understand subtle differences from the normal nephropores, one example being some lobsters having anterior clusters which release the product a different way. Although this was far from the norm of the lobsters studied, they found that the glands appeared to be released through the exterior of the animal, not via the urinary bladder like every other nephropore complex. One other hypothesis tested was that nephropore rosette glands produce a bacteriostatic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In a survey conducted in December 2005, only 33% of the federal department hired personnel skilled in EVM. I was involved in a project that exposed the myths of EVM. The project manager failed to understand the importance of EVM. The organization had contracted to have six storage containers erected in the back of the company. The initial budget was $50, 000 dollars with a completion date of 30 days within contract agreement. The WBS provided a breakdown at each level, the amount of work to be performed, and the cost at each level. It is known that many projects require a more in depth research of what is required for project success. Even with prior planning uncertainties will happen. In this case, the contractor decided to outsource the concreted for the paid. The problem is that the concrete was not with codes and had to be removed and repoured. This delay caused budget overruns. This goes back to the quality not being measured in the earned value management (EVM) system.
