I was very impressed by the kids talents and courage. I would never have half the
courage these kids had to step up on a stage and perform. They were singing, and
dancing, and one kid even played the drums. One act that really stood out to me
was Hannah Kor. I will never forget watching Hannah perform on stage during the
talent show. She showed remarkable courage when she performed. She even gave a
speech before she sang and was very well spoken. It s very hard to get on stage and
speak in front of an audience of that size (something that I would never want to do),
but she did it with ease. In the midst of all the performances, all the kids in the
audience were always cheering the acts that were up on stage on. They didn t
laugh and make fun of the acts like a lot of kids would; instead they seemed to be
truly proud and happy for their friends. The way these kids were so genuine really
inspired me. They made me look at children with special needs in a new light. Just
because they were different, or had a disability, it didn t stop them from being kind,
being brave, and having fun.
That was the first experience I had with the Special Olympics and it only made me
want to do more. So I worked every year for the Special Olympics that went on in
my parish. I also began to look into other things I could do. I found out about a

overthrow was headed by President Hamid Karzai, but he and his government mostly
only had power in Kabul and Kandahar, urban cities. After the Taliban, the
misogynistic Mujahedeen regained power in many rural parts of Afghanistan, where
they forced women to stay indoors and constantly wear the burqa. Although the
Mujahedeen oppose the Taliban, the two organizations are similar in many ways
when it comes to women s rights. The Taliban enforced Sharia law, which is strict
Islamic law, according to the Taliban members interpretation of the Quran.
According to this law, women have little to no rights. Women under the Taliban
could never leave their houses unless they had a permit because of an emergency,

The life of a warrior is not always filled with glamour and glory. Warriors cannot
simply waltz through a tough battle, shedding blood left and right and taking all
the glory and credit for themselves. There are often tough decisions to be made.
Warriors also cannot just think of themselves, for their decisions often affect the
lives of others as well. They need the heroic code to guide them in their decision
making. In this essay, I will describe the heroic code and share its applications in
the stories of Beowulf, Gilgamesh and Noah, and The Illiad, as well as my other
personal experiences. I will start with the story of The Man of La Mancha, which ...
Beowulf s loyalty is most prominent at the end when he fights the dragon. He did
not want to fight the dragon because of his age, but felt that he owed it to the king
to do it. Beowulf was so highly revered that everyone was deeply saddened by his
death. He truly lived his life exactly to the Germanic heroic code. Nearly all of
Beowulf s actions in this poem follow the heroic code. He saved lives, fought every
battle bravely, was loyal even in situations of life and death, courageous, and
rewarded and revered even the warriors underneath him. The fact that he died in
battle just means that he did not only live as a hero but die as one too. The last
example of the heroic code in epic stories is from The Epic of Gilgamesh. Similarly
to Beowulf, Achilles, and Hector, Gilgamesh was very strong and very brave, like a

Having a constructivist classroom can mean many different things. Being a teacher
with a constructivist perspective is a different type of teaching style than people are
used to. Constructivism, as I understand it, is a way of teaching that has the students
learn through their own methods. They are to try to find their own style of learninga
concept, whether it be in their heads or with unifix blocks or by drawing pictures.
Everyone learns differently and children need to be given the freedom to explore their
learning by themselves. Also, students need to be able to construct their own
meanings and insights without teacher instruction. Having a constructivist classroom
would mean the teacher not giving as much direction as in a traditional classroom.
Teachers with this perspective want their students to be mathematizing their learning
(FD Ch 1.4).
An example of this concept of mathematizing was when in Madeline s classroom. She
wanted her students to understand the concept of counting on instead of starting back
at 1 and the idea that numbers are nested inside of each other (FD Ch 1.5).
Madeline was having her students count red and green beads to make a necklace of
22. Some of them understood that if you had 19 beads, then you only need 3 more to
make 22 while others started back at 1 to count to 22 altogether.
