Pearl Harbor Open Door Policy
Prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan, the war started in China in 1937. The war in China
was between China and Japan. Japan had marched into China and declaring an all out attack on
China specifically for their resources and supplies. Since Japan relied on international trade for
their resources, it was vital for Japan to establish themselves as a powerful nation in order to
receive the resources that they needed. However, their actions that they had done in China had
violated the open door policy that was enacted by the US for the purpose of equal trading
opportunities and business in China. Japan was in a state where they felt that they needed to take
control of China because their economy was declining. If Japan didn t take actions

Valley Forge Essay
Valley Forge: Quit or Stay When a person is in a stressful situation on instinct they have two
options, fight or flight. In war the same is true. War is not always bayonets and bullets, it s the
decisions you make during times of hardship. A soldier has to make the decision whether to keep
fighting for what they believe in no matter what the stakes or to flee. In December of 1777, George
Washingtonand his troops arrived at Valley Forge. Since the summer of 1775, all has gone well for
the Continental Army. More recently Washington was presumably unable to stop General Howe
and his British soldiers from claiming the national capital of Philadelphia. With Howe and his army
of approximately 18,000 comfortably quartered in Philadelphia,... Show more content on

I am no longer fighting for myself, but for my nation and for my fallen comrades whose death
must not be in vain. Another reason I must re enlist is the fact that my government deserves my
loyalty. The Committee of Congress has stayed with us through much of the winter after
arriving at Valley Forge a few weeks ago and has given us hope (Document B). That hope has
sparked within us a new flood of encouragement and will power. When George Washington was
talking to the 5 members of Congress, he expressed the fact that we brave soldiers need help in
our battle with Britain (Document B). Even though it s cold, and we have threadbare clothing
that are merely rags, and the Congress members are all dressed in their finest, our spirit is still
strong (Document B). Even Dr. Waldo stated that while tending to our sick soldiers, he was
surprised by the magnitude of cheerful willingness to proceed with fighting for our cause
(Document C). Dr. Waldo expected us to be down on our luck for having to withstand the poor
food, fatigue, cold weather, crowded huts, and smoky air quality which was due to poor
ventilation, but most soldiers were able to persevere through all of that hardship (Document C).
The Committee of Congress makes me feel like someone is listening to our needs. The general
supports us and the government cares about us, so I must support my government. Lastly, I am re

Chinese Essay Exam for Civil Service
The Chinese essay exams for civil service selections were known as the Imperial examinations,
which were instituted by Imperial Chinese to determine who among the population would be
allowed to enter the state s bureaucracy. The Imperial Examination System in China lasted from the
founding during the Sui Dynasty in 605 to its demise near the end of the Qing Dynastyin 1905.
These examinations lasted approximately 1300 years (Elman, 2002).
From the time of the Han Dynasty (206 BCE to 220 CE) until the implementation of the Imperial
Examination System, the majority of appointments were based on recommendations of prominent
aristocrats and local officials who would recommend individuals who were predominantly of
aristocratic rank. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the late Imperial China, the examination system and associated methods of recruitment to the
central bureaucracy were major mechanisms by which the central government captured and held the
loyalty of local level elites. Their loyalty, in turn, ensured the integration of the Chinese state, and
countered tendencies toward regional autonomy and the breakup of the centralized system. The
examination system distributed its prizes according to provincial and prefectural quotas, which
meant that imperial officials were recruited from the whole country, in numbers roughly
proportional to each province s population. Elite individuals all over China, even in the
disadvantaged peripheral regions, had a chance at succeeding in the examinations and achieving the
rewards of holding office.
The examination system also served to maintain cultural unity and consensus on basic values. The
uniformity of the content of the examinations meant that the local elites and ambitious would be
members of those elites across the whole of China were taught with the same values. Even though
only a small fraction (about 5 percent) of those who attempted the examinations passed and
received titles. Those who failed to pass most of the candidates at any single examination did not
lose wealth or local social standing; as dedicated believers in Confucian orthodoxy, they served,
without the benefit of state appointments, as teachers and managers of local projects, such as

Underwater Cemetery Research Paper
Underwater Cemetery How new technologies have helped undersea treasure hunters disturb long
forgotten shipwrecks According to the United Nations more than three million shipwrecks can be
found on the ocean floor. These ships contain trillion dollars worth of artifacts, however we
should not forget that an incalculable number of people lost their lives on those ships, making
them massive underwater cemeteries. All those deaths left behind them mourning family
members who demand that wrecks be left as undisturbed graves. An experienced diver once
claimed that hunting through a shipwreck was like walking through a haunted house. You can
sense the presence of those who sank with the ship and have nothing to identify their lost
remains. This is why the shipwreck are primarily their graveyard and not a place for treasure
hunts. They should be left in peace. Ships like the Nuestra Senora de la Mercedes which sank
near the coast of Tampa bay, killing over 200 crews members, should be protected by some
regulation. For the respect of those who died serving their country, even if the ship contains half a
billion dollars worth of sunken treasure.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Industrial Estate On The Edge Of Town
The industrial estate on the edge of town had, for a number of years, not been a place that attracted
all that many people.
Not many of the right sort of people anyway.
The forest of old brick buildings that once stood clean and tall were now covered in several thick
layers of moss while the accompanying metal plated factories that were once able to reflect the
rays from the sun for miles into the distance were now a dull, dirty grey and begging to show
noticeable signs of rust.
The entire estate had, at one time, been owned by a single very large and very successful business
that had employed thousands of people from the local area.
Campbell Urwin Limited had been one of the countries largest manufacturing companies. It
produced ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Over time however, the estate had also come to be the home of a group who s time was focussed
on much more sinister actives. They were a group of people who went by no formal name and a
group whose presence there was unknown to all those who passed through the area.
The group called home a building that stood in the middle of the vast estate. It was a building quite
different from those that surrounded it. It was cleaner (although not by much), as well as taller and
much more modern than the rest. It had, formally, also been the head office of Campbell Urwin.
The top floor of the building was made up of a number of small rooms. They had all previously
been the offices of the companies top executives, although none had been used to house office
equipment for some time. More recently the rooms had been converted and become improvised
bedrooms.
In the far corner of the floor was a small and fairly basic room that had little in it apart from a
rusty bed frame that was topped with a mattress so old it was made up of considerably more
broken springs than not.
This particular room belonged to the girl that was sat on the splintering chair by the window and
looking out at the view, although there was little she was able to see through the heavy torrent of
rain and hail that was smashing its way down onto the glass.
Cleo was an average girl of average height. In fact almost everything about her was average, apart
from her life anyway, that was nothing

Anne-Marie Slaughter s Why Everyone Can Have It All
Why Nobody Can Have It All But Should Be Able To Most people dream for their entire lives of
having the perfect, high paying job, or maybe starting a family. There seems to be a stark divide
between those who want to move higher up in their career fields, versus those who would rather
focus on home life. The strange thing is that it is nearly impossible to accomplish both of these
things at the same time: especially if you are a woman. In Anne Marie Slaughter s article Why
Women Still Can t Have It All, she writes of her difficulties splitting her efforts between her busy
work life and taking care of her children. Others have tried to oppose this position by saying that it
is not just a women s problem, and that men also have difficulty... Show more content on

Dorment tried to persuade the reader of the opposite, that men are at the disadvantage, however
there are many important details that he overlooks. One of the times that Dorment somewhat
contradicts himself is when he explains that sixty percent of all bachelor s and master s degrees
go to women, but, There are about as many women in the workforce as men, (698). While at first
glance this quote implies that women are at an advantage when it comes to education, it actually
displays a downfall in the plight of women trying to get jobs. Not only is there a slightly smaller
amount of women working than men, but if women are getting about sixty percent of the degrees,
they should logically also be getting sixty percent of the jobs. It is evident that there is a problem
that needs solving if women who are more qualified are not getting jobs that less qualified men are.
Another misstep that Dorment takes is mentioning, more than once, the famous song Cat s in the
Cradle by Harry Chapin, which is well known for making fathers feel guilty and worried about
missing out on spending time with their children (701, 708). While the sentiments expressed in this
commonly known song may very well be what working fathers feel every day, it is difficult to
sympathize with men when their main pressure to stay home with their families comes from

The Importance Of Social Media In Journalism
Whether we realize it or not we see journalism almost everyday in our lives. Journalism can be
found in abundance on television, newspapers, magazines, and even on our beloved social media
applications. So what is journalism exactly? The textbook definition defines journalism as The
collection and editing of news for presentation through the media (Merriam Webster Dictionary). In
journalismthere are many categories that articles may fall in when they are published in media,
some of the most common categories that are seen the most are objective reports, editorial opinion,
and entertainment/sports. When comparing and contrasting the categories that are used, we see
that there are more similarities than differences in such things as the tone, style, and the intendant
purpose of these articles. In the objective reporting style article Social Media and Fake News In
The 2016 Election , written by American authors Hunt Allcott and Matthew Gentzkow. Alcott and
Gentzkow suggest through a extremely informative tone, that the outcome of the of the 2016
presidential election was significantly influenced by the influx of fake news in the media (211). In
Allcott s and Gentzkow s article they both use an informative tone to express that the overall
spread of false information through social media plays a significant role in influencing people s
perspective. Allcott and Gentzkow construct their article by first giving context to this problem by
elaborating on how social

got to play in the snow for the first time. The Schilthorn also had a revolving restaurant on top of
the mountain so as we were trying to warm up from walking around in the wind and the snow on
the top of the mountain by having some hot chocolate we got to see all the Alps from all angles.
Another afternoon we were there, my mom and I went to Trummelbach falls which one of the

took an elevator shaft up into the mountain and when we got out, all I could hear was the

would echo across the mountain caverns. As we walked further into the mountain, we got to see
different parts of the fall at every level and there were all these really cool shaped caverns. In
order to see the rest of the falls, we had to walk outside down the mountain and every time we
came around the corner there would be the falls in the shape of funky spirals or turns. Plus, as we

Designer Babies Designer babies are those babies, who are produced by in vitro fertilization, and
whose genetic makeup has been selected or altered by genetic engineering to remove the particular
problem, or to make sure that a specific gene with desirable features is present. It is suggested that
the phrase designer baby was originated from the phrase designer clothing and it is coined by
journalists and not scientists in 2004 (Agar). With the technology of producing designer babies,
people will be able to choose certain characteristics such as the height, color of the eyes, facial
appearances, and probably personality and intelligences of their children. However, this concept of

In this case, the process of Pre Implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) can be applied for designer
babies. This process is helpful in screening out those embryos that may have a genetic disease.
Parents would be able to select healthy embryos for implantation into mother s womb after
professional s consultation. Many families with children that are affected with preventable
disease often wish good health for their children. Now, the advancement in medical technology
has made it possible for people to conceive only healthy babies and not those babies, who may
develop some form of the deadly disease after birth. This is definitely a positive feature of
designer babies as parents would have to pay only once for the procedure of implantation of
healthy embryo and then they would be free of any costs of medical treatments during the life of
their child. Moreover, it will also remove the pain of seeing their child in

Viktor Frankl And The Holocaust
Viktor Frankl, renowned psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor, often quoted Nietzsche saying, He
who has a why to live for can bear almost any how . Viktor Frankl, known for his development of
logotherapy, a form of therapy that teaches individuals to live a life of meaning, put this saying to
use when he experienced unspeakable atrocities during the holocaust. Given his medical and
psychological history, Frankl was able to withstand Nazi concentration camps and not give into the
hopelessness he faced; he instead focused on the meaning of life.
It seems that Frankl arrived in the world at the right time; his purpose was fulfilled by his
circumstance. Frankl made sure to recognize everyone s individual essence, and it was with the

After receiving the title doctor, Frankl went on to work with behavioral psychologists Sigmund
Freud and Alfred Adler, while staging his own theory: logotherapy behavior is driven by the need
to find meaning. But Frankl later broke from his initial attraction to Freudian theory and began
studying psychoanalysis under Alfred Adler. He came to disagree with Adler s position that
people do not have the freedom of choice and willpower to overcome their problems (Range, 2000).
Frankl writes that, life is not primarily a quest for pleasure, as Freud believed, or a quest for power,
as Alfred Adler believed, but a quest for meaning (Frankl, Meaning ). However, his practice and
theory were not well received by medical professionals of the time.
For quite some time, German hatred towards the Jews had been brewing. With the humiliation and
shame of their defeat in World War I, their anger increased and they needed someone to blame for
all of their problems. With Hitler s rise to power, they had an outlet for their hatred. And so began
the Holocaust.
With his psychology background, Viktor Frankl was prepared, as one could be, for the
unspeakable horrors that were to come by the hands of Hitler and the Nazis who began advancing
and taking occupation of his city, religion, and culture. With the unimaginable terror and cruelty
Jews experienced, it is a wonder how those persecuted and subjected to torture and

Analysis Of Big Hero 6
It s classic villain. We ve seen too much (Hall Williams, 2015). The movie Big Hero 6 tells the
story of Hiro Hamada and his friends in the fictional city of San Fransokyo as they try to find the
person that killed Hiro s brother, Tadashi. As the protagonist and hero of the story, Hiro Hamada
grows into an individual ready to take on the world. Through the use of Joseph Campbells heros
journey outline, Big Hero 6shows how Hiro Hamada can be anyone s hero.
Big Hero 6 opens with an introduction of Hiro Hamada. Hiro lives his everyday life in San
Fransokyo by participating in robot fights and not going to college. However, Hiro s brother and
first mentor, Tadashi, is able to convince Hiro to apply to the same college he is attending. This is
the hero s call to adventure as Tadashi is able to get Hiro to try something new. Hiro is then tasked
with creating a scientific invention to prove his abilities to the board at the San Fransokyo Institute
of Technology
Hiro applies to the school and presents his invention, microbots, at the Institute s science fair.
Microbots are small robots controlled by one s mind that can link together to create any structure.
Hiro is accepted to the school by the dean Callaghan and plans to accept the call of adventure.
However, a fire breaks out at the Institute and Tadashi dies while attempting to save an apparently
trapped Callaghan.

Theme Of Naturalism In The Open Boat
Naturalism in The Open Boat
Naturalism is an outgrowing literary movement from realism, a more specific writing method. The
literature network states, Naturalism sought to go further and be more explanatory than Realism by
identifying the underlying causes for a person s actions or beliefs (Naturalism). Naturalism is used
to explain more of the natural occurring events and social behaviors, the characters behavior and
believes. One of the first and leading writers to use this literary method was Stephen Crane. Crane s
famous story, The Open Boat , is a perfect example of a naturalist piece of writing work. In the
story, the characters are four men; The Captain, The Cook, The Correspondent, and The Oiler.
The four men were initially travelling in a ship called the SS Commodore, when they hit a
sandbar and the ship sank. The four men must travel in a small boat, in a terrible storm in the
middle of the sea for more than 30 hours, trying to row their way to a lifesaving station in an
island. The devastating days leave the four men to accept the fact that they might not make it
home at the end of the day, but they do not have any control over their situation. Therefore, they
only have one choice which is to accept their fate, and this story is based on a real life experience
Crane had.
Crane starts by describing how the four men have not seen a clear blue sky in days, and in fact,
they did not remember what a cloudless sky looks like. The readers can feel that the four men are
tired and losing hope as they keep rowing throughout their days. Crane describes and makes the
readers understand how each character is contemplating their life threatening situation. The setting
emphasizes devastation: The correspondent, pulling at the other oar, watched the waves and
wondered why he was there... (Crane). Crane uses naturalism by describing how bad the weather
was and how it is affecting them. He also emphasizes naturalism by having them realize that fate
has chosen their path, and nature is taking its own course
Crane uses two conflicts in the story, and the most natural one is Man vs. Nature, the external
conflict. Crane utilizes naturalism with this conflict to make the reader understand that men have
no power over

5. Sikhs believe in reincarnation and karma. This is one of the few fundamental areas that Sikhs
adopted from Hinduism.
Part 2
Respond to the following questions in 150 to 200 words:
1. What do you think is the most important similarity and which is the most important difference?
Use specifics to support your answer.
The most important difference is that of the creation of the universe. Jains regret the idea that the
universe was created by one creator. Rather they believe that the universe was created out of
natural forces in motion. And that they forces are constantly changing. Sikhs on the other hand
believe that the universe was created by one God. This one God is the divine entity in their
monotheism religion. This helps to formulate the understanding in each religions core beliefs.
Regardless of their difference, both religions stress the importance of the individual s struggle to
purify the self, to act morally, and to do good to others, Malloy (2013). The most important
similarity is that of karma and reincarnation. These basic principals have been adopted from
Hinduism. It represents the main mantra that life on this plane must be lived in the path of
righteous. By doing onto others and acting selfless these two religions are formed under one basic
principal: to achieve the ultimate goal of life on the highest existence level.

Prenatal Sexual Differentiation
Two syndromes that embody the intersex condition in which the physical appearance of an
individual s genitals does not reflect the individuals gender include CAH and AIS. Congenital
adrenal hyperplasia happens when an individual s genetic make up is that of a female. However,
during prenatal development, which is the first most important process and healthy and normal

to a genetic condition. Thus, the prenatal sexual differentiation is one that does not occur in the
manner that it normally would for a female. The overproduction of these androgens is directly
connected to the fact that the individual who is genetically born a female begins to grow

Essay about Tobias Wolff s; The Rich Brother
Tobias Wolff s short story, The Rich Brother , is a parallel story to the biblical fable of Able and
Cain. The biblical story of Able and Cain is that of the first story that puts man against man. Cain
and Able are children of Adam and Eve, where Cain is the eldest and Able the younger of the
two. In the biblical story Cain and Able end up giving gifts (sacrifices) to appease to their God.
This in turn, creates tension between the two because Able s sacrifice of the lamb is much
favored by God than is Cain s offering of his crops. Cain becomes outraged because he believes
that Able has purposely tried to embarrass him, ultimately, leading Cain to become so enraged that
he ends up murdering his only brother in cold blood. Throughout,... Show more content on

Wolff portrays Peter and Donald as rivals throughout The Rich Brother as were Cain and Able
were in the Bible. Cain and Abel s rival rivalry came to when god had favored Abel s gift of the
lamb. With favor came God s overwhelming love which Cain had exclusively desired. Peter,
much like Cain, came to a bitter rivalry with his brother Donald in that Peter wanted all the love
that him mother gave that he felt Donald was eating up. For example, when Donald had his
surgery his mother protested him even to climb trees and so on because she loved and cared for
her son this enraged his brother Pete because he didn t receive as much attention as his little
brother did. Pete later states his jealousy when he replies to Donald s accusation of trying to kill
him and says mom was in a state every time you burped (812). While it be Pete or Cain their
bitterness towards their brothers are only fueled by their own jealousies.
Mostly, throughout The Rich Brother Peter is viewed as the most selfish individual. Most
important, was that he wanted his mothers love so badly that he attempted to kill his own
brother (812), which is a reference to Cain killing his brother and leaving him in the fields.
Donald says to Pete You re basically a very frightened individual. Very threatened (811) this in turn
shows that how jealous Pete was and how he was willing to kill simply over jealousy. Moreover,
Pete could not stand the fact that he

Final Exam Research Paper
Final Exam Essay
Writing is one of the most difficult subjects I have taken on this spring semester. Being able to
identify the different types of essays as well as putting my skills together to write them is the most
difficult to me. Although I have learned from the negative and positive feedback, I still feel there is
a huge area that needs improvement. Starting this out I didn t quite know what to expect or what
level my writing skills were at. I will most definitely be able to use what I ve learned for my future
education as well as my future career. Intellectually I know I had a smart, compassionate instructor
that just wanted to absolute best for me in this aspect.
The beginning of my struggles with writing was back in seventh grade, I remember staying after
school 3 out of 5 days a week for tutorials. I struggled with it all the way until my junior year in
high school whenever I came across my English teacher who was once a college professor. It was a
daily struggle and even then I remember staying after school 3 out of the 5 days for tutorials.
After seeing my skills improve every day, I knew all I needed was extra coaching and practice. If I

Daniel Deronda Essay
Daniel Deronda
Daniel Deronda, the final novel published by George Eliot, was also her most controversial.
Most of Eliot s prior novels dealt largely with provincial English life but in her final novel Eliot
introduced a storyline for which she was both praised and disparaged. The novel deals not only
with the coming of age of Gwendolyn Harleth, a young English woman, but also with Daniel
Deronda s discovery of his Jewish identity. Through characters like Mirah and Mordecai Cohen,
Eliot depicts Jewish cultural identity in the Victorian period. Reaction to Daniel Deronda exposes
the deeply embedded anti semitism of the period. The story follows the tow main characters over
the course of several years as they struggle with their own ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

It was during this time that she began to suffer from the kidney problems that eventually killed
her. She was also plagued by chronic head and tooth aches during this time (Karl, 545). Despite
her physical ailments Eliot meticulously researched the book. She took Hebrew lessons with
Emanuel Deutsch and the character of Mordecai Cohen is said to be based on him. She also read
extensively about Jewish culture and tradition. In a letter Eliot s would be spouse, George Henry
Lewes, writes that of the two buying Judaic books and visiting a synagogue in Frankfurt in the
summer of 1873 (Karl, 527).
Daniel Deronda was originally published in a series of monthly installments that appeared in
Blackwood s Magazine between February and September of 1876. Terence Cave notes in his
introduction to the Penguin edition of Daniel Deronda, that the decision to begin in February was
based on the inability to get it to the American market in December and Blackwood s belief that
January wasn t a fit month to publish anything(qtd. in Cave xxii). Eliot was able to stay
comfortably ahead of release dates while writing Deronda seemingly conquering the pressures of
serial publication that she so hated.
The text was then published in 4 bound volumes printed in 1876. In October of 1877 a second
printing of the novel contained minor alterations to the

Jewish Museum Exhibition Analysis
Exhibitions are narrative tools which museums and other public institutions assemble to inform,
engage and inspire their visitors. The exhibitions are developed using variety of communicative
process which generates visitor learning and interpretation on various levels. The understanding of
the message largely depends on effective visitor engagement and participation. It is not about what
you present but how to present it. Each visitor develops their own interpretation based on prior
knowledge and new experience. It is believed that the most effective interpretation is provocative
rather than instructional which is supported through engagement and discussion. The primary role

While the aims of the museum are a fine example of the way museums can be used to stimulate
discussion about serious issues, the Museum ultimately fails these aims as open ended
communication is eclipsed by high tech interactives. Intolerance is framed as an individual
problem which can only be overcome at the personal level. This tension between an exclusive
understanding of the Holocaust and the need to counteract acts of racial violence all over the
world is reflected in the initial stages of the Museum s development. As museum s brochure
explains, this high tech, hands on experiential Museum focuses on two themes through unique
interactive exhibits: the dynamics of racism and prejudice in America, and the history of the
Holocaust . These interactive exhibits engage visitors in real life situations that help to identify
their own existing and potential prejudices . The language used is both moralistic and didactic we
are told how to think and what to do. This is reinforced by a right of passage experience in which
visitors have to choose between two doors to gain access to the Tolerancenter . The one on the left
is under the sign intolerant while the one on the right is signposted tolerant (Witcomb, 2003, p.135

A Pundit’s Solution to Fixing Drug Violence in Mexico Essay
Thomas Friedman, a biweekly column contributor for the New York Times, is a pundit who
throughout his career has made some bold claims about controversial issues in the news. Bestement
and Gutherson argue that a pundit is merely one who gives opinions in an authoritative manner ,
and that while they may speak convincingly, their skills as pundits lie in their ability... to learn
quickly about the broad contours of a wide range of subjects, and to project confidence and
authority in talking about them (Bestement, Gutherson 2005; 2,3). Since a pundit is one who uses

The prohibition of drugs such as cocaine, opium, and marijuana is rooted in the racism and
xenophobia of the people of the United States. It was believed that cocaine consumption by the
black community could make them disregard the barriers that society had established between
different races , while Chinese were portrayed as assiduous opium smokers and Mexicans were
labeled as avid marihuana smokers (Recio 2002; 23,24). These faulty conceptions of the minorities
in the United States resulted in a new perception...that drug consumption could not be morally
accepted and therefore its use should be seriously restricted (Recio 2002; 24). Medical
professionals in the United States were strongly opposed to an all out ban of these drugs, but
eventually the United States congress passed the Harrison Act. This act was initially designed to
limit the availability of these narcotics by requiring a prescription from a physician to obtain
them. Later, United States congress passed the Volstead Act, which prohibited alcohol. In 1922 the
Harrison Act became a totally prohibitionist piece of legislation (Recio 2002; 25, 26). Immediately
after the Harrison Act and the Volstead Acts were passed, illegal drug traffickers took the place of
physicians in providing narcotics to the people who wanted them (Recio 2002; 26). In order to
prevent this, the United States government decided that if the country producing drugs

wisely chooses to get back at him by using his wits. Rather than getting upset over Harry s slurs,
the Pilgrim takes his revenge in a more subtle way by telling a tale guaranteed to irritate his Host:

They feel that it is important that voter s proof of identity requirements is essential to avoid voter

Dubliners By James Joyce s Dubliners
In James Joyce s Dubliners, the reader experiences the different lives of Dublin s inhabitants. Each
Dubliner has different problems, fears, hopes, and dreams, which allows culminates into many
different perspectives. Joyce masterfully writes the daily lives of these people without any
romanticism. The Dublinersstories are a small snippet into their full lives, while the reader does
not get the full story, he does not need to. Not much may seem to happen in the stories, but
profound themes and messages are hidden beneath the words. In the story An Encounter, a
group of boys imagine they are in the Wild West, while staging mock battles of cowboys vs.
Indians. The story includes many encounters that present themselves as ordinary; however this
is far from true. In fact, the story is largely commentating on often mocking Irish religious life
and escapism. In the beginning of the story one of the boys, Leo Dillon, is scolded by Father
Butler for reading The Half Penny Marvel. Father Butler considers the comic as nonsense and
tells Leo that his Roman History is far more cultured and important (Joyce 12). A religious figure
like Father Butler is common among Joyce s works, as he has always shown contempt for
religion. In a sense, Father Butler creates structure for the boys, but it is monotonous and rigid.
Clearly Father Butler does not approve of Leo s fascinations for the Wild West so he condemns
him. The lack of support for imagination or freedom is snuffed out by a

Difference Between Mortgage And Mortgage
What Is Mortgage And Mortgage Refinancing ?
What is a Mortgage?
A mortgage is nothing more than a real estate loan. This loan is basically called as a mortgage as
it has some distinct characteristics. The mechanism of such a loan is also pretty simple. A person
who is looking forward to purchase property, can apply to a mortgage lender. After receiving the
application of the borrower, the lender analyzes three important facts:
1. The property that is to be purchased with the help of the loan, its market value and its current
condition.
2. The second thing that is analyzed by the lender is the repaying capacity of the applicant.
3. Some personal details of the applicant such as the spending habits (such as the use of credit
cards), educational qualifications, payment of taxes is also analyzed. If the applicant has a family,
then details of the family members such as their employment status and income are also considered.

route. However, if you are finding that the monthly payments and interest seem to be increasing or,

Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night Tone
Dylan Thomas s Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night implores people to live fully due to the
fact that time is short, and usually, it is too late before they realize it. He warns to not spend life
foolishly, and also states in the poem that even though death is inevitable, there should be no
restriction as to how one should control his or her destiny. Thomas s tone is urgent, but also
incorporates shift, metaphor, imagery, and repetition in order to remind people to live life with
passion.
This poem is inspired by Thomas s ailing father. Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night s
purpose is to tell people to fight against the ticking clock of death. Rage, rage against the dying of

The Power of Poetry Terence This is Stupid Stuff, by A.E. Housman compelling work of poetry
that addresses mainly the theme of the power of poetry and why we should read poetry. Many
sections in this poem portray this theme, but one line that shows it best is the section in which
Terence, the person whose perspective the poem is being told through, explains that you need to
read little bit of poetry so you will be prepared when hard times come to you. Another section that
portrays this theme of the powerof poetry and why we should read poetry is the section in which
Housman is talking about the fact that, when you get drunk, the world seems great and you are
happy, but the happinessis temporary, but poetry helps you permanently. A third section that
portrays this theme of the power of poetry and why we should read poetry is the section in which
Terence is talking about King Mithridates, and that he built up an immunity to the world s poisons
by eating little bits of the poisonso when others tried to assassinate him, he was immune. Terence
suggests that poetry can be like little bits of poison, so when the bad times come, you will be

poetry because it will prepare you for times when you are sad or are in bad times because you

in the quote, . This section shows that Housman thinks that people should read poetry even when

Essay about The Life of Emile Durkheim
Emile Durkheim was French sociologist. He was born on April 15, 1858 in Epinal, France.
Epinal is located in the Eastern French Province, Lorraine. His father, Moise was the Chief
Rabbi of Epinal, Vosges, and Haute Marne, while his mother, Melanie, worked as an embroiderer.
Durkheim was the youngest of their four surviving children. Durkheim s great grandfather,
grandfather, and father were all Jewish rabbis. He was expected to follow suit so at a young age
he was sent to a rabbinical school. He studied Hebrew, the Talmud, the Old Testament, as well as
the curriculum taught in secular schools. Surprisingly his destiny for rabbinate was short lived. He

Durkheim s generation at Ecole Normale Superieur was full of brilliant people. He quickly became
a participant of the political and philosophical debates that characterized the school, though he was
more interested in academics than politics. He found the literary nature of the school to be very
disappointing but became very inspired by two of his teachers, Numa Denis Fustel de Coulanges
and Emile Boutroux. Numa Denis Fustel de Coulanges taught Emile the importance of religion in
social institutions and could be studied rationally and objectively. Emile Boutroux taught him that
atomism, the reduction of phenomena to their smallest constituent parts, was a fallacious
methodological procedure and that each science must explain phenomena in terms of its own
specific principles. The theories he learned later influenced his theories on the subjects. He
successfully passed his agrГ©gation, an exam required to be a teacher in a state secondary school.
Durkheim had dedicated his life to a study of society but since sociology was not a subject at the
secondary schools or universities, he launched his career teaching philosophy in 1882. In 1885
Durkheim took a year of leave to do research in Germany. While he was there he had a chance to
study under Wilhelm Wundt, a pioneering experimental psychologist. Emile was very impressed by
Wilhelm Wundt. In 1887 he returned to France to become a lecturer in education in sociology at
Bordeaux. He had

Color Guard Reflection
Sophomore Iman Hearing swings her flags gracefully over her shoulder and takes her place in
line. As one of six, she marches down to the football field in front of the band, chin lifted and
smiling big.
[In Color Guard], I get to go out and show people what I can do, said Iman, who has been on the
team for one year. That s really fun for me.
Color Guard is the visuals of the band, hence why they are sometimes called the Visual Unit. Every
time the marching band performs, the Color Guard is right there with them. They march with the
band during pregame, perform at halftime, and even perform at Bandtasia.
Only about half of the girls on the team had any kind of background relating dance or Color
Guard before they joined the team. Each and every team member started with a blank canvas.
They all had to pick up skills associated with Color Guard as they went. Many of the girls had to
learn how to do flag tosses and spins at the Color Guard auditions.
I didn t have anything relating to [dance or Color Guard] in my background, Iman said. It wasn t
super hard to pick up or learn how to do.
But Color Guard is in no sense easy; it is tricky for the Color Guard to handle their props. Junior
and captain Abby Stritzinger knows first hand the difficulties with props.
Someone got too close to me with their flag and actually hit my head, said Abby, who has been on
the team for three years. It s never fun when you get hit in the head with a flag. Color Guard uses
four different flags, one for pregame and one for each of the three songs at the halftime show. The
pregame flag is green and white and is of a usual size, which means its pole is six feet long. The
flag used for the first song in the halftime show, Eleanor and Rigby, is the regular size, too, and it
fades from pink to a yellowish orange color. The flag used for the third song, Bohemian
Rhapsody, is like the one used for the first but instead of the fade of colors, the flag is the
yellowish orange color with white streaks across it.
The flag used for the second song, Wishing You Were Here, is special and different than the other
three flags. It is called a swing flag. This means that is has a shorter pole that is more flexible and
bends easier

The Events That Changed Latin America
The Event that Changed Latin America The Latin American countries have been subject to many
changes ever since the American continent was discovered. These changes have mainly affected the
economy, culture and power changes these countries have suffered throughout the years. According
to Jon Charles Chasteen on his book Born in Blood Fire During the twentieth century, there were
three main events that changed the course of Latin American countries and their economies. These
three events were, the emergence of nationalism, the end of World War II, and the Cuban
revolution. However, in my point of view, the event that created more impact in Latin Americaand
the future of these countries has been Cuban Revolution. It is not a secret that the Cuban
Revolution created a big impact to the country s future, unfortunately this revolution not only
changed Cuba, but also the entire region of Latin America. However, the revolution, led by Fidel
Castro, brought hope for those who supported the fight against the repressive government in the
island, but it also brought a red signal of danger and fear of Cold Warto other countries in America,
especially for United States. Even though the revolutionary Fidel Castro was friend with the Soviet
Union, Cuba never played a big role outside of the island. Nevertheless, United State anti
communism policy encouraged a violent anti revolutionary reaction that spreader all over Latin
America in the 60 s and 70 s.

This is mainly because children at a young age are more field dependent (global) than field
independent (analytical) (Schunk, 2016). Therefore, field independent students are characterized as
being motivated in everything they do, without needing the group approach to encourage
themselves to work cooperatively. Moreover, they show interest in the tasks presented to them by
the teacher without feeling the need to consult the teacher or their peers. The familiarity of the
subject is seen through their understanding prior carrying out the task, which makes the students
cognitively ready for new challenges in their education. This is one important factor that teachers
need to consider and evaluate before giving out the tasks to the students, as sometimes they might
doubt and mistreat their abilities, offering the students no challenges in the activities. However,
during several lessons students are often seen to work in groups to achieve the same goal, thus
referring to one another for new ideas and solutions. This social interaction promotes understanding
amongst the students themselves, and their teacher. Schunk (2016), confirms that field dependent
learners seem sensitive to teacher praise and criticism . Finally, to accommodate all students present

Their larvae [tadpoles] have gills [to allow them to breathe in water] and develop in water. Many
tadpoles are eaten by fish, birds or other frogs and they eat algae or tiny organisms in water.
Large frogs eat insects, mice, bugs, and worms. In size, they range from 10mm [0.39in] such as
the Eleutherodactylus Iberia of Cuba to 300mm [12in] such as the Conraua goliath of
Cameroon ( Frog ). In the spring, male frogs and toads move to watery breeding sites and start
calling to attract females and in some cases to warn other males to keep away from their
territories ( Frogs ). Frogs distribution ranges from the tropic to subarctic regions, but most are
found in tropical rainforests except Antarctica. They are found in almost every habitation that
provides access to water. The world consists of more than 5 200 species of frogs and some still
are not yet found (Tyler, Wassersug, and Smith). Some of the countries with the most frog species

have 90 frog and toad species. However, until recently, whether one lived in a city, a rural, or
anywhere in the world, chances were high that an individual was not far away from seeing a frog or
other amphibians such as toads, salamanders, and caecilian. What has changed? In the U.S., the
reduction of frogs and other amphibians is serious in California, the Rocky Mountains, the
Southwest, and Puerto Rico. Other continents such as Australia,

Holding On, A Story Excerpt
One week had gone by, and that was all it took for Serena to lose her bright eyes, her charming
personality, and her strong demeanour. In place stood a woman with dark, tired eyes, unclean and
unmotivated, she had hardly left her bed, the world felt scary. She always knew, Ric s death
would be hard on her, but she did not think it would be this hard and she was avoiding people at all
costs.
She had briefly spoken to Jess, who called to see how she was; it was an emotional call, in which
Jess, offered to take control of the funeral plans. Serena, sounded so broken, and so adamant that
she could not arrange it herself, she did not know where to begin, and although, Jess had lost her
father, and the emotional baring was tough on her. Jess, felt that the pressure of a arranging a
funeral could see Serena fall into darker depths.
Other than Jess, Serena had not spoken to anyone; she had not even told her own daughter of Ric s
death, she did not want to disrupt her university work. Serena did not want Eleanor, to feel
responsible for her; it was not her job to look after her.
With a sore head, and a strong crave for something sugary, Serena left her bed, and headed
downstairs, and through to the kitchen. She had hardly eaten over the past week, and when she
did eat, it was takeaway food; she just really did not care about herself. She felt that life was unfair,
cruel, Ric did not deserve to die, and he did not deserve to suffer.
Opening up the fridge, Serena pulled

Friar Tuck
1 Project Overview In this paper we will examine the process that Friar Tucker used to decide
which project to implement that best supported their organizational goals. We will also use similar
techniques to create a simple strategic plan outline to be used to guide us on a personal project.
According to the simulation, All projects that an organization undertakes are linked to the
organization s strategic plan. This entails the development of a process by which projects are
selected based on their relevance to the strategic plan (Wideman, 1999). This of course is much
easier said then done. However after completing the first step of the project by insuring that the
project is necessary and pertains to the organizational mission... Show more content on

Who will do the work? Are there any building permits that are needed? What do you do with the
old fence marital? Are there any government programs that can be used to assist in paying for
this project? Which way is the smooth side of the fence going to face? Yes, there are a lot of
questions that must be answered and a great deal to think about so let s get started with the
obvious... talking to the neighbor. After doing some basic cost analysis, (cost of supplies,
workers vs. self instillation, and time) a tentative agreement was reached to share the cost and a
work assignment was reached. One member of this new team will price the materials, call for
building permit information, and inquire into pre packaged fence designs that may be at this
fledgling team s disposal. The other member of this team will inquire about government
programs that may be available, cost of workers, and old fence material disposal information.
Normally, when creating a project there is a structured formula that a project manager will use
through each stage of the project. From the project intention stage, to getting the project off the
ground, and eventually reviewing the final processes stage and making adjustments as needed
before stepping back to see the work that has been done. In our small project all of the steps may
not be necessary, but most will be utilized even in some small way. The process should go a bit like
this: The Project Initiation Stage is concerned with taking these

Fast Food Nation
Issues Surrounding the Nation s Slaughterhouses In the book, Fast Food Nation, Eric Schlosser
discusses the problems that the nation is facing with fast food restaurants. Schlosser wrote this
book because he was concerned with where the fast food industry was taking America. He voices
his concern about the children and their health regarding meat bacteria, and the fat content of the
food. He also mentions how potato farmers, cattle ranchers, and chicken raisers are suffering from
the industry controlling prices too low. Another worry Schlosser has is how the meat packing
factories for these restaurants treat their workers and ultimately how careful they are with the meat.
There are many horrifying stories about the harsh injuries and... Show more content on

Instead of these managers looking out for their workers, they try to hide the injuries, and will
give injured employees easier jobs until they are healed, if they agree to not visit the doctor. They
feel the need to hide minor injuries because a supervisor must meet production goals, keep the
number of recorded injuries low, and most importantly, keep the meat flowing down the line
without interruption (Schlosser 175). The Occupational Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA) is responsible for inspecting meatpacking plants and making sure they are operating and
functioning properly. The old OSHA policy was that, there were 1,300 inspectors and over 5
million workplaces to be looked at. The employers would expect an inspection about every 80
years (Schlosser 179). Now, for an inspection to even be done, the factories injury rate must be
higher than the national average. There is a slim chance of that happening because the records are
kept by the companies officials, since the have direct control on the number of injury reports.
Schlosser brings up an interesting statement about OSHA s policy when he says they did indeed
reduce the number of recorded injuries in meatpacking plants. It did not, however, reduce the
number of people getting hurt. It merely encouraged companies, in the words of a subsequent
congressional investigation, to understate

Typically the signs and symptoms of autism are noticed during the first three years of a child s
life ( Autism Symptoms ). The signs of autism vary from case to case but there are some present
in most. These are how an individual acts regarding social interactions, verbal or nonverbal
communication, and a limited interest in activities or play. Laura Hensley noticed the signs and
symptoms when her son Clancy was eighteen months old. When we moved to Iowa, Clancy
stopped talking. Another sign was that he got into Thomas the Train and he would line them all up

revoked and becomes replaced by another toy named Buzz Lightyear. The two of them
accidentally fall out of the top story of their home and have to go on an adventure to make their

Criticism applies to this story due to the technology that was used to create it and how much this
technology impacted the time period in which it was produced. The 1995 Film, Toy Story, receives

Lasseter was a genius when it came to computer animation, he had been using the Pixar Image
Computer to create a short film known as Luxo Jr. (Zorthian). Before the Toy Story film was in
development, nobody knew what the Pixar Image Computer could be capable of and only used
it to create either Two Dimensional movies or a Three Dimensional short film. Considering
Luxo Jr. had been released before Toy Story, the short film was created as a test to see if they
could make their full length Three Dimensional film. Lasseter might have also been the one who
discovered that his computer was capable of reducing the amount of manual labor required to
make high quality cartoons which encouraged him to create Luxo Jr. and then Toy Story right
afterwards (Lesley). Without the discovery of how their computer operates they could have not
obtained their title of having the 1st computer animated film and would not be as rich of a
company as they are today. At first, the Pixar Image Computer did not seem to impact the history
of technology at all. But once they figured out what it was capable of and created the two Three
Dimensional films, it impacted the history of technology enough to make Pixar an animation

Theme Of Forbidden Love In Romeo And Juliet
William Shakespeare wrote a play that is about a forbidden love named Romeo and Juliet. This
story involves a family fued between the Capulets and Montagues. Readers and fans of the play
never thought that a story like this could be true but in Afghanistan it is. Zakia and Ali are
forbidden lovers. Though instead of a family feud. It is a feud between two religions. Zakia is a
Sunni and Ali is a Shiite, also know as the Capulets and Montagues. Religion is playing a huge role
in their love. Sunnis and Shiites go way back causing many feuds. Since they go way back sunni
and shiite relgions clash making their love hard. Sunni Islam is the most populated religion in
Afghanistan. Among 940 million in who believe in this religion. Sunni have of 700 million more

laws. These contain the ideas of the Hanafi, the Maliki, the Shafi i and the Hanbali.Sunnis have
their historical roots in the majority group who followed Abu Bakr, an effective leader. Another
thing is that the Sunnis is named sunni is because of the tration of the prophet that they

An Individual Detailed Analysis on the Style, Editing...
An individual detailed analysis on the style, editing techniques Mise en scene and
cinematography in the film Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind . Michael Gondry s Eternal
sunshine of the spotless mind (2004) is not your typical Hollywood rom com. Its cinematic style
is very original and by far out of the ordinary for its genre. The use of techniques and the way the
film is produced is the reason why it is so memorable. The non linear narrative is based around a
middle aged guy who falls in love with a woman, who, after a while into their relationship decides
to erase every single memory and feeling towards him. The story is told in flashbacks that slowly
reveal the time and space the couple spent together and all the events that made... Show more

There are plenty of examples of continuity editing in Eternal sunshine, both temporal and spatial are
used. Discontinuity is used throughout the memory erasing scenes with the deliberate use of
ellipsis as Joel relives his memories in flashbacks. Some of the shots from Joel s memories are put
together in a montage edit; this is another example of discontinuity editing. There are multiple uses
of crosscutting in the film, which is when there are a series of shots that keep cutting back and forth
from one shot to another shot, this occurs in a lot of the flashback scenes. Also there are several
jump cuts, which brakes the continuity edit as in order to achieve a smooth and non noticeable cut
from one shot to another the camera must move 30 degrees or more to attain the continuity in the
movement of shots. But a jump cut is deliberately shot without using the 30 degree rule. Therefore
when you put the shots together they make a jump affect and it brakes up the continuity of the edit.
In this case, Gondry intentionally directed the crosscutting and jump cuts in order to express Joel s
reactions to the procedure. At the beginning of the film the editing picks up a rhythm and runs
smoothly, giving a perfect example of continuity editing, but as the film goes on it begins to switch
between continuity and discontinuity as the edit balances

The intimate relationships between Japanese firms and the main banks has made internal cash
position less of a constraint to the firms, as they could continue their investments and growth even

firms from market failure and reduced the potential financial risks (McGuire Dow, 2005). The
keiretsu system contributes significantly in evening financial burdens in the face of crisis and in
merging the goals of profit maximization within the corporate community (Kawai, 2007). The
equalizing function immunes firms from the risks of uneven and unbalanced economic
improvements of the member firms within the keiretsu system, as both firms acquire the same

the system allowed firms to form alliance with inter firm agreements which would lower transaction

Social Changes During The Industrial Revolution
The Industrial Revolution caused many changes. The three main changes that are quite noticeable
are technological, social, and economic changes. Great examples of theses changes can be found
within a variety of sources, but mainly coming from my history textbook. Massive technological
changes in machines, energy use, and transportation (technological). It resulted in rapid
urbanization, and it created different social classes (social). This led to the development of Laissez
Faire capitalism, socialism, utilitarianism, socialism, and communism (economic). To start,
technological changes were one of the main changes during the Industrial Revolution. It all started
with the substitution of mechanical devices for human skills, then everything changed. Machinery
was applied first in coal mining and textiles. The new machines, methods, and techniques quickly
spread into other industrial areas. For example, the use of steam engines in transportation led to the
railroad system, vastly increasing the speed, reliability, and amount of goods moved over long
distances, converting the nation into one unified market. This led to a plethora of other technical
changes, with iron, steel, bridge building, organization, and communication.... Show more content

During the Industrial Revolution, the social structure of society definitely changed. Before the
Revolution, many people lived in small villages, either doing work with agriculture, or crafting.
Everything was mainly done by hand, but with industrialization, came a jurassic change. The new
enclosure laws left farmers jobless, and machines made small hand weavers redundant. As a result,
many people were forced to work in factories. This caused many families to move closer to their
jobs, but more importantly, many become poor. Due to the increase in urbanization, many families
priorities changed. As a result, social classes were slowly

  • 2. Pearl Harbor Open Door Policy Prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan, the war started in China in 1937. The war in China was between China and Japan. Japan had marched into China and declaring an all out attack on China specifically for their resources and supplies. Since Japan relied on international trade for their resources, it was vital for Japan to establish themselves as a powerful nation in order to receive the resources that they needed. However, their actions that they had done in China had violated the open door policy that was enacted by the US for the purpose of equal trading opportunities and business in China. Japan was in a state where they felt that they needed to take control of China because their economy was declining. If Japan didn t take actions ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Valley Forge Essay Valley Forge: Quit or Stay When a person is in a stressful situation on instinct they have two options, fight or flight. In war the same is true. War is not always bayonets and bullets, it s the decisions you make during times of hardship. A soldier has to make the decision whether to keep fighting for what they believe in no matter what the stakes or to flee. In December of 1777, George Washingtonand his troops arrived at Valley Forge. Since the summer of 1775, all has gone well for the Continental Army. More recently Washington was presumably unable to stop General Howe and his British soldiers from claiming the national capital of Philadelphia. With Howe and his army of approximately 18,000 comfortably quartered in Philadelphia,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I am no longer fighting for myself, but for my nation and for my fallen comrades whose death must not be in vain. Another reason I must re enlist is the fact that my government deserves my loyalty. The Committee of Congress has stayed with us through much of the winter after arriving at Valley Forge a few weeks ago and has given us hope (Document B). That hope has sparked within us a new flood of encouragement and will power. When George Washington was talking to the 5 members of Congress, he expressed the fact that we brave soldiers need help in our battle with Britain (Document B). Even though it s cold, and we have threadbare clothing that are merely rags, and the Congress members are all dressed in their finest, our spirit is still strong (Document B). Even Dr. Waldo stated that while tending to our sick soldiers, he was surprised by the magnitude of cheerful willingness to proceed with fighting for our cause (Document C). Dr. Waldo expected us to be down on our luck for having to withstand the poor food, fatigue, cold weather, crowded huts, and smoky air quality which was due to poor ventilation, but most soldiers were able to persevere through all of that hardship (Document C). The Committee of Congress makes me feel like someone is listening to our needs. The general supports us and the government cares about us, so I must support my government. Lastly, I am re enlisting because ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Chinese Essay Exam for Civil Service The Chinese essay exams for civil service selections were known as the Imperial examinations, which were instituted by Imperial Chinese to determine who among the population would be allowed to enter the state s bureaucracy. The Imperial Examination System in China lasted from the founding during the Sui Dynasty in 605 to its demise near the end of the Qing Dynastyin 1905. These examinations lasted approximately 1300 years (Elman, 2002). From the time of the Han Dynasty (206 BCE to 220 CE) until the implementation of the Imperial Examination System, the majority of appointments were based on recommendations of prominent aristocrats and local officials who would recommend individuals who were predominantly of aristocratic rank. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the late Imperial China, the examination system and associated methods of recruitment to the central bureaucracy were major mechanisms by which the central government captured and held the loyalty of local level elites. Their loyalty, in turn, ensured the integration of the Chinese state, and countered tendencies toward regional autonomy and the breakup of the centralized system. The examination system distributed its prizes according to provincial and prefectural quotas, which meant that imperial officials were recruited from the whole country, in numbers roughly proportional to each province s population. Elite individuals all over China, even in the disadvantaged peripheral regions, had a chance at succeeding in the examinations and achieving the rewards of holding office. The examination system also served to maintain cultural unity and consensus on basic values. The uniformity of the content of the examinations meant that the local elites and ambitious would be members of those elites across the whole of China were taught with the same values. Even though only a small fraction (about 5 percent) of those who attempted the examinations passed and received titles. Those who failed to pass most of the candidates at any single examination did not lose wealth or local social standing; as dedicated believers in Confucian orthodoxy, they served, without the benefit of state appointments, as teachers and managers of local projects, such as ... • 6. Underwater Cemetery Research Paper Underwater Cemetery How new technologies have helped undersea treasure hunters disturb long forgotten shipwrecks According to the United Nations more than three million shipwrecks can be found on the ocean floor. These ships contain trillion dollars worth of artifacts, however we should not forget that an incalculable number of people lost their lives on those ships, making them massive underwater cemeteries. All those deaths left behind them mourning family members who demand that wrecks be left as undisturbed graves. An experienced diver once claimed that hunting through a shipwreck was like walking through a haunted house. You can sense the presence of those who sank with the ship and have nothing to identify their lost remains. This is why the shipwreck are primarily their graveyard and not a place for treasure hunts. They should be left in peace. Ships like the Nuestra Senora de la Mercedes which sank near the coast of Tampa bay, killing over 200 crews members, should be protected by some regulation. • 7. The Industrial Estate On The Edge Of Town The industrial estate on the edge of town had, for a number of years, not been a place that attracted all that many people. Not many of the right sort of people anyway. The forest of old brick buildings that once stood clean and tall were now covered in several thick layers of moss while the accompanying metal plated factories that were once able to reflect the rays from the sun for miles into the distance were now a dull, dirty grey and begging to show noticeable signs of rust. The entire estate had, at one time, been owned by a single very large and very successful business that had employed thousands of people from the local area. Campbell Urwin Limited had been one of the countries largest manufacturing companies. It produced ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Over time however, the estate had also come to be the home of a group who s time was focussed on much more sinister actives. They were a group of people who went by no formal name and a group whose presence there was unknown to all those who passed through the area. The group called home a building that stood in the middle of the vast estate. It was a building quite different from those that surrounded it. It was cleaner (although not by much), as well as taller and much more modern than the rest. It had, formally, also been the head office of Campbell Urwin. The top floor of the building was made up of a number of small rooms. They had all previously been the offices of the companies top executives, although none had been used to house office equipment for some time. More recently the rooms had been converted and become improvised bedrooms. In the far corner of the floor was a small and fairly basic room that had little in it apart from a rusty bed frame that was topped with a mattress so old it was made up of considerably more broken springs than not. This particular room belonged to the girl that was sat on the splintering chair by the window and looking out at the view, although there was little she was able to see through the heavy torrent of rain and hail that was smashing its way down onto the glass. Cleo was an average girl of average height. In fact almost everything about her was average, apart from her life anyway, that was nothing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Anne-Marie Slaughter s Why Everyone Can Have It All Why Nobody Can Have It All But Should Be Able To Most people dream for their entire lives of having the perfect, high paying job, or maybe starting a family. There seems to be a stark divide between those who want to move higher up in their career fields, versus those who would rather focus on home life. The strange thing is that it is nearly impossible to accomplish both of these things at the same time: especially if you are a woman. In Anne Marie Slaughter s article Why Women Still Can t Have It All, she writes of her difficulties splitting her efforts between her busy work life and taking care of her children. Others have tried to oppose this position by saying that it is not just a women s problem, and that men also have difficulty... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dorment tried to persuade the reader of the opposite, that men are at the disadvantage, however there are many important details that he overlooks. One of the times that Dorment somewhat contradicts himself is when he explains that sixty percent of all bachelor s and master s degrees go to women, but, There are about as many women in the workforce as men, (698). While at first glance this quote implies that women are at an advantage when it comes to education, it actually displays a downfall in the plight of women trying to get jobs. Not only is there a slightly smaller amount of women working than men, but if women are getting about sixty percent of the degrees, they should logically also be getting sixty percent of the jobs. It is evident that there is a problem that needs solving if women who are more qualified are not getting jobs that less qualified men are. Another misstep that Dorment takes is mentioning, more than once, the famous song Cat s in the Cradle by Harry Chapin, which is well known for making fathers feel guilty and worried about missing out on spending time with their children (701, 708). While the sentiments expressed in this commonly known song may very well be what working fathers feel every day, it is difficult to sympathize with men when their main pressure to stay home with their families comes from ... • 10. The Importance Of Social Media In Journalism Whether we realize it or not we see journalism almost everyday in our lives. Journalism can be found in abundance on television, newspapers, magazines, and even on our beloved social media applications. So what is journalism exactly? The textbook definition defines journalism as The collection and editing of news for presentation through the media (Merriam Webster Dictionary). In journalismthere are many categories that articles may fall in when they are published in media, some of the most common categories that are seen the most are objective reports, editorial opinion, and entertainment/sports. When comparing and contrasting the categories that are used, we see that there are more similarities than differences in such things as the tone, style, and the intendant purpose of these articles. In the objective reporting style article Social Media and Fake News In The 2016 Election , written by American authors Hunt Allcott and Matthew Gentzkow. Alcott and Gentzkow suggest through a extremely informative tone, that the outcome of the of the 2016 presidential election was significantly influenced by the influx of fake news in the media (211). In Allcott s and Gentzkow s article they both use an informative tone to express that the overall spread of false information through social media plays a significant role in influencing people s perspective. The Schilthorn also had a revolving restaurant on top of the mountain so as we were trying to warm up from walking around in the wind and the snow on the top of the mountain by having some hot chocolate we got to see all the Alps from all angles. We took an elevator shaft up into the mountain and when we got out, all I could hear was the pounding of twenty thousand liters of water going through the mountain per second which would echo across the mountain caverns. As we walked further into the mountain, we got to see different parts of the fall at every level and there were all these really cool shaped caverns. In order to see the rest of the falls, we had to walk outside down the mountain and every time we came around the corner there would be the falls in the shape of funky spirals or turns. It is suggested that the phrase designer baby was originated from the phrase designer clothing and it is coined by journalists and not scientists in 2004 (Agar). Viktor Frankl, known for his development of logotherapy, a form of therapy that teaches individuals to live a life of meaning, put this saying to use when he experienced unspeakable atrocities during the holocaust. Given his medical and psychological history, Frankl was able to withstand Nazi concentration camps and not give into the hopelessness he faced; he instead focused on the meaning of life. After receiving the title doctor, Frankl went on to work with behavioral psychologists Sigmund Freud and Alfred Adler, while staging his own theory: logotherapy behavior is driven by the need to find meaning. But Frankl later broke from his initial attraction to Freudian theory and began studying psychoanalysis under Alfred Adler. He came to disagree with Adler s position that people do not have the freedom of choice and willpower to overcome their problems (Range, 2000). Frankl writes that, life is not primarily a quest for pleasure, as Freud believed, or a quest for power, as Alfred Adler believed, but a quest for meaning (Frankl, Meaning ). However, his practice and theory were not well received by medical professionals of the time. For quite some time, German hatred towards the Jews had been brewing. With the humiliation and shame of their defeat in World War I, their anger increased and they needed someone to blame for all of their problems. • 15. Theme Of Naturalism In The Open Boat Naturalism in The Open Boat Naturalism is an outgrowing literary movement from realism, a more specific writing method. The literature network states, Naturalism sought to go further and be more explanatory than Realism by identifying the underlying causes for a person s actions or beliefs (Naturalism). Naturalism is used to explain more of the natural occurring events and social behaviors, the characters behavior and believes. One of the first and leading writers to use this literary method was Stephen Crane. Crane s famous story, The Open Boat , is a perfect example of a naturalist piece of writing work. In the story, the characters are four men; The Captain, The Cook, The Correspondent, and The Oiler. The four men were initially travelling in a ship called the SS Commodore, when they hit a sandbar and the ship sank. The four men must travel in a small boat, in a terrible storm in the middle of the sea for more than 30 hours, trying to row their way to a lifesaving station in an island. The devastating days leave the four men to accept the fact that they might not make it home at the end of the day, but they do not have any control over their situation. Therefore, they only have one choice which is to accept their fate, and this story is based on a real life experience Crane had. Crane starts by describing how the four men have not seen a clear blue sky in days, and in fact, they did not remember what a cloudless sky looks like. The readers can feel that the four men are tired and losing hope as they keep rowing throughout their days. Crane describes and makes the readers understand how each character is contemplating their life threatening situation. The setting emphasizes devastation: The correspondent, pulling at the other oar, watched the waves and wondered why he was there... (Crane). Crane uses naturalism by describing how bad the weather was and how it is affecting them. He also emphasizes naturalism by having them realize that fate has chosen their path, and nature is taking its own course Crane uses two conflicts in the story, and the most natural one is Man vs. Nature, the external conflict. Crane utilizes naturalism with this conflict to make the reader understand that men have no power over ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The biblical story of Able and Cain is that of the first story that puts man against man. Cain and Able are children of Adam and Eve, where Cain is the eldest and Able the younger of the two. In the biblical story Cain and Able end up giving gifts (sacrifices) to appease to their God. This in turn, creates tension between the two because Able s sacrifice of the lamb is much favored by God than is Cain s offering of his crops. Cain and Abel s rival rivalry came to when god had favored Abel s gift of the lamb. With favor came God s overwhelming love which Cain had exclusively desired. Peter, much like Cain, came to a bitter rivalry with his brother Donald in that Peter wanted all the love that him mother gave that he felt Donald was eating up. For example, when Donald had his surgery his mother protested him even to climb trees and so on because she loved and cared for her son this enraged his brother Pete because he didn t receive as much attention as his little brother did. Pete later states his jealousy when he replies to Donald s accusation of trying to kill him and says mom was in a state every time you burped (812). While it be Pete or Cain their bitterness towards their brothers are only fueled by their own jealousies. Mostly, throughout The Rich Brother Peter is viewed as the most selfish individual. Most important, was that he wanted his mothers love so badly that he attempted to kill his own brother (812), which is a reference to Cain killing his brother and leaving him in the fields. The property that is to be purchased with the help of the loan, its market value and its current condition. 2. Another section that portrays this theme of the powerof poetry and why we should read poetry is the section in which Housman is talking about the fact that, when you get drunk, the world seems great and you are happy, but the happinessis temporary, but poetry helps you permanently. A third section that portrays this theme of the power of poetry and why we should read poetry is the section in which Terence is talking about King Mithridates, and that he built up an immunity to the world s poisons by eating little bits of the poisonso when others tried to assassinate him, he was immune. His father, Moise was the Chief Rabbi of Epinal, Vosges, and Haute Marne, while his mother, Melanie, worked as an embroiderer. Durkheim was the youngest of their four surviving children. Durkheim s great grandfather, grandfather, and father were all Jewish rabbis. He was expected to follow suit so at a young age he was sent to a rabbinical school. He quickly became a participant of the political and philosophical debates that characterized the school, though he was more interested in academics than politics. He found the literary nature of the school to be very disappointing but became very inspired by two of his teachers, Numa Denis Fustel de Coulanges and Emile Boutroux. Numa Denis Fustel de Coulanges taught Emile the importance of religion in social institutions and could be studied rationally and objectively. Emile Boutroux taught him that atomism, the reduction of phenomena to their smallest constituent parts, was a fallacious methodological procedure and that each science must explain phenomena in terms of its own specific principles. The theories he learned later influenced his theories on the subjects. He successfully passed his agrГ©gation, an exam required to be a teacher in a state secondary school. Durkheim had dedicated his life to a study of society but since sociology was not a subject at the secondary schools or universities, he launched his career teaching philosophy in 1882. In 1885 Durkheim took a year of leave to do research in Germany. While he was there he had a chance to study under Wilhelm Wundt, a pioneering experimental psychologist. As one of six, she marches down to the football field in front of the band, chin lifted and smiling big. [In Color Guard], I get to go out and show people what I can do, said Iman, who has been on the team for one year. That s really fun for me. Color Guard is the visuals of the band, hence why they are sometimes called the Visual Unit. Every time the marching band performs, the Color Guard is right there with them. They march with the band during pregame, perform at halftime, and even perform at Bandtasia. Only about half of the girls on the team had any kind of background relating dance or Color Guard before they joined the team. Each and every team member started with a blank canvas. They all had to pick up skills associated with Color Guard as they went. Many of the girls had to learn how to do flag tosses and spins at the Color Guard auditions. I didn t have anything relating to [dance or Color Guard] in my background, Iman said. It wasn t super hard to pick up or learn how to do. But Color Guard is in no sense easy; it is tricky for the Color Guard to handle their props. Junior and captain Abby Stritzinger knows first hand the difficulties with props. Someone got too close to me with their flag and actually hit my head, said Abby, who has been on the team for three years. It s never fun when you get hit in the head with a flag. Color Guard uses four different flags, one for pregame and one for each of the three songs at the halftime show. The pregame flag is green and white and is of a usual size, which means its pole is six feet long. The flag used for the first song in the halftime show, Eleanor and Rigby, is the regular size, too, and it fades from pink to a yellowish orange color. The flag used for the third song, Bohemian Rhapsody, is like the one used for the first but instead of the fade of colors, the flag is the yellowish orange color with white streaks across it. The flag used for the second song, Wishing You Were Here, is special and different than the other three flags. It is called a swing flag. These changes have mainly affected the economy, culture and power changes these countries have suffered throughout the years. According to Jon Charles Chasteen on his book Born in Blood Fire During the twentieth century, there were three main events that changed the course of Latin American countries and their economies. These three events were, the emergence of nationalism, the end of World War II, and the Cuban revolution. However, in my point of view, the event that created more impact in Latin Americaand the future of these countries has been Cuban Revolution. It is not a secret that the Cuban Revolution created a big impact to the country s future, unfortunately this revolution not only changed Cuba, but also the entire region of Latin America. However, the revolution, led by Fidel Castro, brought hope for those who supported the fight against the repressive government in the island, but it also brought a red signal of danger and fear of Cold Warto other countries in America, especially for United States. Even though the revolutionary Fidel Castro was friend with the Soviet Union, Cuba never played a big role outside of the island. Therefore, field independent students are characterized as being motivated in everything they do, without needing the group approach to encourage themselves to work cooperatively. Moreover, they show interest in the tasks presented to them by the teacher without feeling the need to consult the teacher or their peers. The familiarity of the subject is seen through their understanding prior carrying out the task, which makes the students cognitively ready for new challenges in their education. This is one important factor that teachers need to consider and evaluate before giving out the tasks to the students, as sometimes they might doubt and mistreat their abilities, offering the students no challenges in the activities. However, during several lessons students are often seen to work in groups to achieve the same goal, thus referring to one another for new ideas and solutions. This social interaction promotes understanding amongst the students themselves, and their teacher. The old OSHA policy was that, there were 1,300 inspectors and over 5 million workplaces to be looked at. The employers would expect an inspection about every 80 years (Schlosser 179). • 51. An Individual Detailed Analysis on the Style, Editing... An individual detailed analysis on the style, editing techniques Mise en scene and cinematography in the film Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind . Michael Gondry s Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind (2004) is not your typical Hollywood rom com. Its cinematic style is very original and by far out of the ordinary for its genre. The use of techniques and the way the film is produced is the reason why it is so memorable. The non linear narrative is based around a middle aged guy who falls in love with a woman, who, after a while into their relationship decides to erase every single memory and feeling towards him. The story is told in flashbacks that slowly reveal the time and space the couple spent together and all the events that made... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are plenty of examples of continuity editing in Eternal sunshine, both temporal and spatial are used. Discontinuity is used throughout the memory erasing scenes with the deliberate use of ellipsis as Joel relives his memories in flashbacks. Some of the shots from Joel s memories are put together in a montage edit; this is another example of discontinuity editing. There are multiple uses of crosscutting in the film, which is when there are a series of shots that keep cutting back and forth from one shot to another shot, this occurs in a lot of the flashback scenes. Also there are several jump cuts, which brakes the continuity edit as in order to achieve a smooth and non noticeable cut from one shot to another the camera must move 30 degrees or more to attain the continuity in the movement of shots. But a jump cut is deliberately shot without using the 30 degree rule. Therefore when you put the shots together they make a jump affect and it brakes up the continuity of the edit. In this case, Gondry intentionally directed the crosscutting and jump cuts in order to express Joel s reactions to the procedure. At the beginning of the film the editing picks up a rhythm and runs smoothly, giving a perfect example of continuity editing, but as the film goes on it begins to switch between continuity and discontinuity as the edit balances ... • 53. Social Changes During The Industrial Revolution The Industrial Revolution caused many changes. The three main changes that are quite noticeable are technological, social, and economic changes. Great examples of theses changes can be found within a variety of sources, but mainly coming from my history textbook. Massive technological changes in machines, energy use, and transportation (technological). It resulted in rapid urbanization, and it created different social classes (social). This led to the development of Laissez Faire capitalism, socialism, utilitarianism, socialism, and communism (economic). To start, technological changes were one of the main changes during the Industrial Revolution. It all started with the substitution of mechanical devices for human skills, then everything changed. Machinery was applied first in coal mining and textiles. The new machines, methods, and techniques quickly spread into other industrial areas. For example, the use of steam engines in transportation led to the railroad system, vastly increasing the speed, reliability, and amount of goods moved over long distances, converting the nation into one unified market. This led to a plethora of other technical changes, with iron, steel, bridge building, organization, and communication.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During the Industrial Revolution, the social structure of society definitely changed. Before the Revolution, many people lived in small villages, either doing work with agriculture, or crafting. Everything was mainly done by hand, but with industrialization, came a jurassic change. The new enclosure laws left farmers jobless, and machines made small hand weavers redundant. As a result, many people were forced to work in factories. This caused many families to move closer to their jobs, but more importantly, many become poor.
