Individualism In Dead Poets Society, And Dead Poet Society
Transcendentalists in the 1830s challenged society s normality. They broke stereotypes and began not
depending their actions according to others. Director Peter Weir and Author Ralph Waldo Emerson
wrote about transcendentalist s ideals of education to rebel against commonly accepted behavior.
Transecdiliasts assured and trusted themselves that the outcome is for the better. Similarly, in the film,
Dead Poets Society, Mr. John Keating teaches an English class navigating the class through the
uncertainties of life. The boys in Keating s class, discover themselves and begin to live life focusing
on their passions. Self Reliance, is an essay about expressing your individualism and overcoming the
social expectations in life. Together they both share the fundamental virtues that to a live successful
life with no regrets, one must trust their self identity and carpe diem. For one to live a life with no
regrets they must fully embrace themselves self in trusting oneself allows one to them fully accept
who they are and express it. In the film, Dead Poets society, people can see Mr. Keating s unquie type
of teaching style. Neil Perry, one of the brightest students at Welton Academy, obtains a new type of
perspective from this unusual English class and decides to try out for the school performance. He gets
the lead however; but his father does not approve, and forbids Neil from acting in A Midsummer
Night s Dream. Neil finds himself conflicted and talks to Mr. Keating. (Dead

Emperor Penguins Essay
The Last March of the Emperor Penguins?
Emperor penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri) in the Antarctic are fascinating flightless birds that are able
to withstand incredibly harsh environments, where wind chills can reach to 76°F. Even though these
penguins are able to survive the freezing temperatures, their breeding success and mortality rates are
based primarily on the sea ice concentration (SIC) and sea ice extent (SIE) throughout the seasons.
Sea ice concentration is a variable for climate scientists and nautical navigators to find the area of sea
ice compared to the total at a given point in the ocean, whereas sea ice extent refers to a region as ice
covered or not ice covered. During the late 1970s, there was an elongated atypical warm period with

Sea ice is a vital breeding and nursing habitat for emperor penguins, where their colonies are formed
far from the open sea. The breeding penguins, would then, go on scavenging trips throughout the
entire development and chick nurturing stages. However, during the period with thick and wide sea ice
cover, the trips become longer. Adult penguins would have to use up more energy for travel, which
will result in lower offspring provisioning and hatching success (Barbraud Weimerskirch, 2001, p.
185). Also, sea ice could influence the emperor penguin by topdown processes . Diminished sea ice
could allow access to hunting areas of the emperor penguin by potential predators, such as killer
whales (Jenouvrier et al., (2012), p. 2759). Consequently, there are no emperor penguin remains found
in killer whale diets. Nevertheless, penguins that have used up so much energy (especially males after
their 4 months fast) are vulnerable to other predators, which could result in a lower survival rate. This
predicament is mainly caused by the change of variables called sea ice concentration and sea ice

The Relationship Between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth Essay
The Relationship Between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth
Macbeth and Lady Macbeth face an extraordinary situation involving a strong supernatural theme and
murder and treason of the highest kind. However Shakespeare still cleverly manages to make Lady
Macbeth and Macbeth relate to audiences of all eras and to convey a strong moral message within his
play.
The relationship between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth is fascinating to study. Shakespeare constantly
changes their attitude to each other throughout the play, making it hard to form a clear cut opinion of
their relationship. My personal opinion is that, although events in the play certainly draw Macbeth and
Lady Macbeth apart, their love for one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By letting his wife announce that they must kill Duncan, Macbeth is able to offload some of the guilt
of the deed onto her he uses Lady Macbeth as a scapegoat for his already guilty conscience. Upon
sending the letter Macbeth immediately goes to see his wife. In my opinion he does this so that Lady
Macbeth is ready to begin to override Macbeth s good characteristics immediately. When Macbeth
loses Lady Macbeth s support later on in the play he is forced to act independently of her, and so loses
the ability to murder. I feel that his actions throughout the play are an indication of Macbeth s
dependency on his wife, as well as his misuse of their love in order to claim the title of King. He refers
to Lady Macbeth as: [his] dearest partner of greatness showing that Macbeth envisages them sharing
the power of the throne.
In his soliloquy Macbeth admits that he has no spur To prick the sides of [his] intent which indicates
that Macbeth knows that he will require Lady Macbeth to be his spur , and coax him into murdering
Duncan. He also knows that by allowing Lady Macbeth to take up such a domineering role she will
take the murder out of his hands, thus freeing him from a great deal of guilt.
Upon receiving the letter, Lady Macbeth immediately responds to Macbeth s wishes, realising that

The Theories of Emile Durkkheim Essay
The Theories of Emile Durkheim
Emile Durkheim also referred to as The Father of Sociology (Thio, 2002), played a critical role in
establishing theories based on Social Facts (Thio, 2002) He is best known for his views of social
reality ( Thio, 2002) and their ties into how a society works. He was said to be a sociologist who
played an important part in the development of structural functionalism (Thio, 2002), and sociology as
a whole. His four major studies, or publications, have assured him a place in the history of sociology s
intellectual development (Thompson, 2002). The following contents will discuss Durkheim s

His scientific way of thinking did not make it easy for him to do well in the studies he required to get

not a subject offered at secondary schools, or the university( The biography of Emile Durkheim,

Zheng He Research Paper
Born: 1371, Kunyang Subdistrict (North of Present Day Laos)
Died: 1433, Kozhikode (Calicut), India
Circumstances of Death:
It is generally accepted (based on Ming dynasty records) that Zheng He died in 1433 at Calicut in
India during the return leg of the seventh voyage and was buried in Calicut or at sea, although some
theories, based on artifacts associated with him and believed to be from later than 1433, posit that he
died shortly after that voyage in 1434 or early 1435.
Historical Context
Zheng He was an admiral and diplomat who helped to extend the maritime and commercial influence
of China throughout the regions bordering the Indian Ocean.

Connections Between U.S. Presidents and Roman Emperors
Throughout history, countless leaders, had their periods of leadership among the masses; a story of
how they claimed their superior position. Are there connections though between leaders and their
lives, positions, and their form of a kingdom? My goal is to find these connections between the United
States current and former presidents, Barrack Obama and George W. Bush and two Roman emperors,
Augustus and his great grandson, Nero.
After a 20 year period of transition from the republic and the assassination of Julius Caesar, Augustus
returned to Rome forming an alliance with Mark Antony and Marcus Lepidus known as the Second
Triumvirate which led to the establishment of the Roman Empire. The first 206 years of the Roman
Empire were known ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was suspected by some historians that Nero caused the fire of 64. Nero attempted to rebuild Rome
and organize the construction of the buildings that were burned or destroyed. The attempt to rebuild
Rome cost immense funds that the Rome State Treasury didn t have, causing the Roman currency to
decrease in value.
Nero was surrounded by death and as emperor was known for his many of his atrocities and
executions, including the execution of his mother. Even as a child, Nero was surrounded by death in
his family. Nero s father, Lucious Ahenobarbus, died when Nero was 2 years old. Several other family
members deaths followed including: his uncle, aunt and cousin; his half brother, and his mother. After
becoming emperor, he had ordered the execution of his mother for having indecent relations.
Later in his reign, Nero became one of the first prosecutors of Christians. After the fire of 64, Nero
tortured and executed countless Christians. Was known by some historians as the antichrist that the
bible predicted.
Our government now has great contrast to the Roman Empire but like the up Empire, we look to one
man for leadership and approval. In a democracy, that one man is known as the president. The masses
vote on a president to represent them for four years. As president, they have several responsibilities
whether it is foreign relations and policy, decided to pass a bill, deploying troops

2002 APUSH DBQ
2002 AP DBQ
In the years following the War of 1812, the Era of Good Feelings evolved between the years 1815 and
1825. In the first half of this period, there was a strong sense of nationalism throughout the United
States. However, political changes and economic differences between the states warped this
nationalism into the sectionalism that divided the country into north, south and west regions.
Celebrations of unity within the United States soon turned into disagreements concerning
representation within the government and the differences within the national government caused by
the emergence of different Republican factions. States distanced themselves from working collectively
in a united economy. They were largely concerned with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, there was a high tariff placed on foreign goods. This was beneficial for the north because
it increased the chances of Americans purchasing the goods produced in their factories. However, this
was disadvantageous for the south. Since slaves were viewed as objects, imported slaves were
considered imported goods and were sold with high tariffs attached to them. The three regions were
becoming more sectionalist because they were becoming increasing concerned with problems facing
their own area, and not the country as a whole. The sectionalism that emerged during this time period
did so within a short period of time. This is easy to see in the election maps of 1820 and 1824. Within
these four years, the United States went from being uniformly supportive of one candidate (Monroe in
1820), to having support for several candidates. While much of the south was in support of Andrew
Jackson, the first president who did not have a formal education and supported the common man ,
much of the north backed John Q. Adams, the eventual winner. These maps illustrate the regional
differences that eventually led to the lack of a majority vote. Sectionalism became quite prominent
with the emergence of different factions within the Republican Party and eventually the creation of
new parties. Each region was sectionalist in that they voted for the candidate who would be the best
advocate for their area, rather than leader for their country.

Stones were placed within the heap. The fire was then set and the burning wood took about three

More sacks were put on top of the baskets and the whole lot was quickly covered in soil to prevent the

Chicken, lamb, pork and beef were the meat options with vegetables included kumara, potato,

Rabindranath Tagore Poem
Rabindranath Tagore (1861 1941) was the youngest son of Debendranath Tagore. Tagore had early
success as a writer in his native Bengal. With his translations of some of his poems he became rapidly
known in the West. In fact his fame attained a luminous height, taking him across continents on
lecture tours and tours of friendship. For the world he became the voice of India s spiritual heritage
and for India, especially for Bengal, he became a great living institution.
Although Tagore wrote successfully in all literary genres, he was first of all a poet. Among his fifty
and odd volumes of poetry are Manasi (1890) , Sonar Tari (1894) , Gitanjali (1910) , and many more

The frail vessel thou emptiest again and again and fillest it ever with fresh life . It suggests the empty

of God is as worthless as a pitcher without water. The day is no more; the shadow is upon the earth. It
is time that I go to the stream to fill my pitcher. Here, the poet is eager to fill the empty pitcher with
virtuous activities. The poet is always afraid that one day when terrible Death knocks at his door, he
will be able to welcome the guest with the full vessel. Rabindrnath Tagore certainly is one of the
greatest poets of the world. His achievement as a poet rests mainly on his English Gitanjali. Gitanjali

The True Hero In Wuulf And Beowulf
As Walter Cronkite, a former CBS anchorman, once said, In seeking truth you have to get both sides
of the story. In the epic poem Beowulf, the successful Danish warriors and their king, Hrothgar, are
heroically saved by Beowulf, the strongest, bravest man across all seas from Grendel s twelve year
massacre. In the novel Grendel, by John Gardner, the plot unfolds similarly; however, it is told
through the perspective of Grendel, the antagonist in Beowulf. The significant difference in
perspectives poses the complex question to readers asking, Who is the real monster? In the epic poem
and novel, Hrothgar, the Danish King, is the true monster through his influence, corruption, and
unmoral actions.
Being the ultimate ruler, Hrothgar initiates his monstrous character by influencing his loyal warriors.
Although some may argue that the Danes are evil, Hrothgar molds and motivates their actions as their
respected king. Rising to power and fame, Hrothgar built Herot, a celebratory mead hall to distribute
treasure and feast with his warriors. Through success in battles, Hrothgar, whose word was obeyed all
over the world, rewarded his loyal Danes with his treasure full hands in Beowulf (6). Receiving praise
and craving eternal fame, the Danes followed Hrothgar s instructions at all costs. Furthermore, the
Danes are influenced by Hrothgar through the Shaper s songs. Describing Herot, the Shaper sang of a

The Nazi Party And The Nazis
The Nazi s quest to unite Germany under the notion of One People, One Empire affected and impacted
many social groups in Germany. Women were utilized by the Nazi Party in ensuring the survival and
production of the future generations of Germany, and maintaining the ideal and traditional version of
the Aryan mother and wife. There was also a lot of pressure directed towards artists and writers. Who
in the eyes of the Nazi party, were meant to conform to art forms such as neoclassicism and traditional
styles as to promote the Aryan ideals and power of Nazi Germany. German youth was also captivated,
indoctrinated and utilized by the Nazi Party, in order to fulfil Hitler s visions of future Germany, with
strong Aryan leaders and soldiers.
The Nazi party manipulated the education and upbringing of many German youths, garnering their
loyalty, strength and numbers through the concept of racial unity. The Youth began as the very first
and essential step in creating a new generation of Nazi s who would eventually come to inherit
Germany. The German education system had been hijacked and transformed in order to encapsulate an
entire generation of youths into fighting for one cause, the Nazi Cause. Especially at an age, were
children were susceptible to the vigour and power of authority. Simple things such as children s

it just shows how one young adult didn t agree with his masters opinion in education and rebelled
making an enormous change in the world. There are many cultures in this world, thousands of years
old which a child is educated by his parents. Back when America was discovered by Colombia s and
the 13 colonies were later established, a term like apprentice was used as the term teenagers are used
today. Children depended on their parents but in these times back when many immigrants fled to
America vise versa was the case to find work in order for the family to succeed. Children and young
adults would work for other families or business as servants example caring for animals, gardening,

knowledge to show young teens to specialize in a certain work learning the skills from there master.

How Is Black Swan Psychoanalysis Criticism
Perfection is not just about control, but also letting go. Psychoanalysis in literary criticisms is a
criticism that is an idea of an unconscious area within the human mind. It emphasized the role of
unconscious in determining human behavior. In here, childhood experiences is very important.
Dreams are also important, in a way, that it is interpreted to know what is the message the unconscious
area wants the conscious one to know. Black Swan is an intense psychological thriller describing a

The Death Penalty And The Fourteenth Amendment
The death penalty to many people could be considered unconstitutional under the eighth and the
fourteenth amendment s. People fear nothing more than death itself because death is final. Execution
dates being carried out promptly with assigned dates after a fair trial would discourage almost anyone
from committing future crimes that are worthy of execution. We as a society are based on the need for
retribution and vengance. Making a wrongdoer pay the price equivalent to the price the wrongdoer
did. Sparsely carrying out executions prolongs the mental and emotional suffering of the victim s
family and friends. It cost taxpayers millions of dollars per year, more than general population to
house a death row inmates. Allowing death row inmates to sit on death row for 25 plus years is a
lugsury most dont deserve. With less than 10% of all inmates being exonorated in the past 200 years
of death penalties it is unclear why executions are not more readily carried out.
Currently, the total number of inmates that have been executed in the US is 1,434. While the total
number of inmates currently on death row is 2,943, 55 of which are female inmates.
Our desire for retribution dates back as early as the 18th Century BC. We feel the need to see the
wrongdoer have consequences for their actions. To be punished and feel the pain that their victim felt
so they can also suffer. Some people love that idea that the person who commited a crime suffers by
whatever means necessary. Knowing

Inheritance
Inheritance between classes
A key feature of C++ classes is inheritance. Inheritance allows to create classes which are derived
from other classes, so that they automatically include some of its parent s members, plus its own. For
example, we are going to suppose that we want to declare a series of classes that describe polygons
like our CRectangle, or like CTriangle. They have certain common properties, such as both can be
described by means of only two sides: height and base.
This could be represented in the world of classes with a class CPolygon from which we would derive
the two other ones: CRectangle and CTriangle.
The class CPolygon would contain members that are common for both types of polygon. In our case:
width and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

This public keyword after the colon (:) denotes the most accessible level the members inherited from
the class that follows it (in this case CPolygon) will have. Since public is the most accessible level, by
specifying this keyword the derived class will inherit all the members with the same levels they had in
the base class.
If we specify a more restrictive access level like protected, all public members of the base class are
inherited as protected in the derived class. Whereas if we specify the most restricting of all access
levels: private, all the base class members are inherited as private.
For example, if daughter was a class derived from mother that we defined as: | class daughter:
protected mother; |
This would set protected as the maximum access level for the members of daughter that it inherited
from mother. That is, all members that were public in mother would become protected indaughter. Of
course, this would not restrict daughter to declare its own public members. That maximum access
level is only set for the members inherited from mother.
If we do not explicitly specify any access level for the inheritance, the compiler assumes private for
classes declared with class keyword and public for those declared with struct.
What is inherited from the base class?
In principle, a

Norms are unwritten socially accepted principles or rules in society that define what is normal and
what isn t. Some norms carry greater significance in our lives than others. The terminology mores was
inclined to norms that are extensively observed and hold extensive moral significance. Mores also
means taboos of society, things that are not accepted, such as chewing with one s mouth closed is
expected or eating in a sloppy way and at a fast pace is not an acceptable behavior. Mores classify
what is merited and what isn t. When a norm is violated it is defined as deviance and even though the
word deviance has a negative connotation to it, it s not. Deviance means and individual is behaving
differently from what society feels is normal behavior. If a person is deviant from norms it doesn t
necessary means that they are doing something bad or immoral. For example, most Canadians eat
meat on a regular basis and they feel by doing so is normal behavior, someone who doesn t eat meat
(vegetarian) they would be considered deviant. Their behavior is different to what the majority
considers acceptable or normal. And just like norms are relative deviance is relative as well. It
depends on the context, individual groups or location in the world and the standard of deviance change
based on these factors. (Macionis, John J. Sociology) For this assignment, I choose to eat in a
provocative manner in the library. I ate food that made loud noises while chewing with my mouth

The Court s View Of The Election Process
In addition, if people lose faith in the election process, our democracy s integrity can be harmed. The
Supreme Court ruled the fact that wealthy corporations had the financial means to support candidates
did not mean that people would lose faith in the election process. In the Court s view, financial support
is but a part of the election process and no evidence supports the idea that candidates bend to
contributors pressure.
However, as this law sets deeper in our jurisprudence and Super PACs feel more comfortable
supporting candidates, some people might start suspecting that candidates are bending to donors
pressure. This suspicion could arise simply from knowing the millions of dollars that Super PACs
spend supporting candidates. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This would exacerbate any potential doubts on the electorate s mind about illegal collusion between
candidates and large financial supporters.
Supporters of the Supreme Court s decision can argue that such outcome is too far an event to
consider it a serious possibility. Even when this scenario requires that certain factors fall into place,
such as the media portraying candidates as puppets, and people believing these allegations, the
question should not focus on how many factors must fall into place, but how reasonable is it that such
factors playout the way they do. If looked from this perspective, the threat of people losing faith in
their candidates becomes very real.
Yet supporters of the Supreme Court s decision can argue that even when a part of the population loses
faith in the election system, the overall trust in it can be maintained. However, on this important issue,
the court should not render meaningless the distrust of a portion of the population, especially when
this distrust arouse out of a lack of judicial deference toward the legislature. In other words, as a
matter of public policy, courts should refrain from ruling in ways that would create an environment in
which a portion of the population could lose faith in the very essence of our society.
Additionally, Court supporters can claim that the argument is that people could lose faith in the
election system, and should not be

Advertising For Online Business Essay
Advertising for Online Businesses
The internet is a huge business and its constant and significant growth attracts more and more
businesses to be online. In 2004, online sales reached $117 billion (www.comscore.com with more
than 812 million internet users (www.internetworldstats.com/stats.htm). All these internet users are
potential customers and it is essential to exploit such an opportunity.
However promotion is crucial, not only to increase traffic. A basic principle is: if people do not know

In short, I consider offline advertising as communicating through the mass media that is to say TV
(local, national...), radio (local, national), print (local, national newspapers, directories, magazines...)
outdoors (billboards, bus shelter...) and cinema. These are known as above the line advertising.
According to me, direct response[1](without the use of the internet off course) could be included in
the above definition as it utilises some of the components of mass media.
The primary reason why a company should combine online and offline advertising is because of the
general advantages these two methods provide. Online advertising enables to one to target an audience
with accuracy, and enables efficient focus on specific segments. With this method, a company can
track how the different users interact with a brand and in what they are interested. The different ads on
the web can be quickly delivered and are really flexible with few additional costs and is easily
accessible anytime. Online advertising also enables interactivity. The users can quickly and easily
have information about the products, its benefits and characteristics, simply by clicking on a link.
Finally, this method is quick, inexpensive and sometimes free as in the case of submitting articles to

EDST 1104 Social Perspectives in Education
Assessment 2 Essay
TANUWIJAYA, Wirya
Z3483970
Why is it important and/or helpful for initial teacher educators such as yourself, to learn about, and
learn to use, ideas from the sociology of education?
Social influences on educational outcomes and the social nature of education structures of the past and
present exemplify how social institutions can affect education perceived by individuals. This can also
be defined as the sociology of education; a study of education systems of how social institutions and
individual experiences affect education and its outcome, as interpreted by Scott and Marshall (2009).
This essay will address how the background of sociology of education (culture of power that exist)
shapes the current social perspectives in education, how sociology of education contributes and its
usefulness for initial educators.
Sociology, education and history
Firstly, it is fundamental for scholars to understand the relationship between the roots of educational
sociology and the sociology of education. Education is being integrated into sociology, the latter
considered by many educators as a supporting beam of pedagogy (in addition to philosophy,
anthropology, psychology, biology, ethics and aesthetics). Through this, the knowledge of sociological
method, problems and generalizations may be adequately interpreted to every educator. Surely,
contemporary education cannot disregard the contributions of sociology. In

Many people today would consider the 2008, United States financial crisis a simple malfunction or

financial advisors regarded the financial crisis of 2007 and 2008 to be the most devastating crisis since
the Great Depression of the 1930 s. To make matters worse, the decline in the economy expanded
nationwide, resulting in the recession of 2007 to 2009 (Brue). David Einhorn, CEO of GreenHorn

Unfortunately, the mortgages would take a turn for the worst; thus, resulting in investment funds lost
and the inability to repay the loans that they borrowed from the banks (Isidore, 2008). Left with
nothing, the banks were forced to declare the loans as unrecoverable, reduce the bank s reserve, and
limit their ability to generate new loans (Isidore, 2008). These actions destroy the economy because
both businesses and buyers need loans to pay for investment expenditures and finance consumption
(Isidore, 2008). An early problem was mortgage backed security . According to AP Economics 19

mortgage backed securities, lenders begin by creating mortgage loans (Brue). When they do, the
lenders combine hundreds of loans into one and sell them off as bonds; basically selling the right to
regain all future payments (Brue). In the end, banks receive an individual payment for the bond. Bond
buyers recover the mortgage payments as the gain on the investment (Brue). As first, it seemed like a
good decision on the bank s party because it moved any future default risk on those mortgages to the
buyer s bond (Brue). Unfortunately, they fail to realize that they had lent the significant amount of
money they got from investment funds to selling bonds (Brue). Moreover, the banks bought huge

Father of New France, Samuel de Champlain Essay example
Samuel de Champlain, who is referred to as the Father of New France, was born in the Brouage,
Saintonge province, Western France. He was born to a protestant family around 1570. His father
Anthoine de Champlain was a sea captain. The fact that his father worked in the high sea as a
navigator, gave Samuel a strong desire to be a sailor and an explorer. This came when he was barely
twenty years, under the guide of François Grave, he made his first voyage trip to the North America.
Samuel Champlain never acquired a formal education in either Greek or Latin literature, but he learnt
to navigate, drawing art of nautical charts, and writing. He also learnt the fighting techniques as part
of a requirement for French sailors and later he was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He formed strong alliances some tribes such as Wendat, Algonquin and Montagnais. These tribes live
around Saint Lawrence River. The tribes demanded that Champlain must lead them in war against the
Iroquois tribe. The Iroquois inhabited the south area of Richelieu River. The Iroquois had an alliance
with England and Dutch, and thus had superior troops. They had an interest on the fur trade that put
the two colonies in friction over the control of the trade. They frequently attacked the French and the
tribes in alliance with them to push them trade the fur to the Dutch and English tradesmen. Champlain
set off with French troops and native warriors to explore the area and as a result Champlain drew the
map of Lake Champlain. During the exploration some Iroquois natives advanced in against Champlain
men and war broke up. The battle was put to an end after Champlain and his soldiers killed three
chiefs of the Iroquois. This strained the French Iroquois relations further but later Champlain
negotiated for a treaty that reconciled the two sides. New France, is a term that was used to refer to the
area that the French colonized in the North America. Jacques Cartier, Samuel Champlain and other
early explorers opened up new routes along St. Lawrence River to allow further exploration works
into the North America territories. Champlain explored other places down to the Lake Champlain
building up settling areas.

The Nature And Existence Of God
The existence of suffering in the world provides a case against the existence of God as the problem of
evil. It seems that the God of classical theism is incompatible with the reality of the world around us;
could such an all loving, all powerful and all knowing God exists in conjunction with instances of
immense and seemingly pointless suffering? It does seem unlikely that such a God exists alongside
evil. However, it is questionable whether this is a proof that God does not exist.
The problem of evil which forms as; is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not
omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then
whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God? (Lactanitus). Epicurus
here challenges the properties we associate with God, suggesting that those properties do not add up to
reality and be consistent with perceived belief about the nature and existence of God. We can form the
problem into an inconsistent triad (J.L Mackie, 212) which runs that God is omnipotent,
omnibenevolent and evil exists. He postulates that no valid solution of the problem which does not
modify at least one of the constituent propositions , positing that is would be impossible to remove
one of the characteristics of God without moving the image of God so far away from our traditional
understanding that it becomes unrecognisable and the problem still remains.

Developing a learning tool to encourage education in a stem subject
Introduction
The aim for this project as has been mentioned is to develop a learning tool to encourage education in
a stem subject, I narrowed this down to developing a game that would help a student learn maths
specifically. Since then I have narrowed this further and have specified that this would be for around
the academic year 7 so around the age of 11 but would still be appropriate for 10 or 12 year olds. To
achieve this aim the objectives will be for one to train in game development as well doing research to
help establish the game mechanics or gamification elements wanted in the game.

The Lion and the Ox Essay
Omar Malas AAPTIS 381 Professor Legassick Kalila wa Dimna The Lion and the Ox is a one of the
oldest and most popular pieces of classic Arabic literature. Originally from India, this animal fable is
famous for its inclusion of many other animal fables, each of which help provide the characters of the
story with advice regarding their situation. Unlike The Arabian Nights, which also uses a frame tale
that contains each tale, multiple animals share their wisdom with one another. The wisdom of the story
s two main characters, Kalila and Dimna, help foreshadow and motivate the events of the frame tale
and bring it to a reasonable yet tragic conclusion. Kalila, one of the two main jackals of the frame tale,

Approaching Kalila after this initial failure, Dimna explains his new plan to destroy the ox using a
parable within a parable: the story of the heron and the crab within the story of the raven and the
snake. A snake has made it a habit of eating the raven s eggs every time one is laid. The raven
complains to it to stop, but to no avail. When the raven complains to the jackal of its problem and how
it hopes to solve the problem by clawing the snakes eyes out, the jackal tells her the parable of the
heron and the crab. Briefly, the old heron uses the innocent crab to trick the fish by claiming that the
fishermen are coming to wipe them out and that he can help them by each day carrying them to a pool
where they will be safe. The fish agree to the heron s trick. The heron carries a few fish away each
day, but as soon as he is out of the sight of the other fish, he eats them. One day when the crab wants
to be taken to the pool, he sees all the fish bones and realizes what has been happening. The crab then
attacks the heron, pinching its throat and killing it. The moral to this story, explains the jackal, is
sometimes people destroy themselves by their own craft and cunning if they are not careful (Arberry
92). This story helps foreshadows the fact that there is great risk for Dimna if he tries to destroy the
ox, but that this risk is worth the effort as long as he doesn t become too invested. Upon hearing this
parable,

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Web-Based Education
However, there are a few issues to be dealt with if web based learning is fully implemented in
educational institutions. Firstly, change in learning theories and approaches may lead to confusion or
difficulties among teachers and students (Web based Learning: Good or Bad?). As discussed earlier, in
web based learning approach, teachers are facilitators and motivators. It is up to the students in
carrying out the activities planned by the teachers creatively and constructs their knowledge about the

Character Analysis Of Lady Macbeth
In the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare, the character Lady Macbeth and her various qualities
are used to reinforce the idea that being ambitious can be beneficial, however it can also have dire
consequences. This Shakespearean tragedy is set in Scotland during the Middle Ages, and follows the
tale of Macbeth, a Scottish Thane, who succumbs to temptation in an attempt to fulfil a set of
prophecies and become King. During the play he becomes consumed by his dark desires and
murderous ambitions, which ultimately lead both himself and his wife to their deaths. The author s
various messages surrounding being ambitious are shown through; the immense determination of
Lady Macbeth, her successful manipulation of her husband, and her callous nature. These qualities
and their implied messages to the audience are explored in the play through the use of; dialogue,
symbolism and other various language features.
One of Lady Macbeth s greatest strengths is her drive and determination to succeed in life. Moreover,
she was willing to do anything, even kill her own child and dash d the brains out of it to get what she
desired. Consequently this shows the immense lengths to which she is prepared to go to and it is also
highlights of the fact that sometimes you have to make sacrifices in order for your objectives to be
realised. The greatest sacrifice which Lady Macbeth makes is to that of her feminism, Make thick my
blood, stop up the access and passage to remorse. This imagery of blood is an extreme example which
shows that Lady Macbeth is willing to stop being a woman because of her great male ambitions.
However, as with all the recurring blood imagery throughout the play, it is also a show of that fact that
she will not feel any guilt for committing the atrocities she does nor will she regret the fact that she
abandoned her womanhood. Consequently, the reason Lady Macbeth has been developed in such a
way by the author is to show the cosmic power of females. Women have historically been oppressed
and so Lady Macbeth would have had to fight her entire life in order to achieve greatness, whilst men
like Macbeth get everything handed to them on a golden platter. Social constraints would have denied

Rene Descartes And George Berkeley
In this paper, I will be writing about the traditional problem of mind and body. I will look at the views
of Rene Descartes and George Berkeley. I will be siding with Descartes. The mind body problem
ultimately encases the difficulty understanding how the mind and body interact, what they entail, and
how they interact and communicate. Rene Descartes believed that the mind and body are two separate
entities, as stated in Descartes s Dualism . He held the notion that while the body is in fact a part of the
physical world our minds are not. Our minds are the consciousness that recognizes its existence
through thinking and understanding. Descartes rationality behind disconnecting the mind from the
entity that is our body is essentially due to the mind not meeting the criteria to be considered a part of
the physical world. His reasoning being that physical things are extended and take up space, nor are
they conscious. The mind does not have extensions. It does not take up space, therefore it is not a part
of the physical world at all, but its dislocation from the physical world does not forfeit its existence.
Descartes uses his criteria for material and immaterial by explaining the physical properties and
attributes of the mind, or lack thereof: To be conscious is not to be of a certain shape or size or to
move in a certain way, but a quite different and indefinable property of which we are each intimately
aware when we reflect on our own minds. (Descartes, 262) We cannot

After one of Anita Roddick s earliest visits, she announced that Body Shop would extend the project
to other Mebengokre villages. They began competing for Body Shop s favor, which strained relations
among the traditionally egalitarian culture. Roddick and Body Shop never made good on their

In the meantime, Body Shop began heavily promoting its links to the Kayapo. It announced what it

on its promise to expand purchases of nut oil. What they did not know was that Body Shop had
recently gotten word that the press was about to report that it had never reached an intellectual
property rights agreement with the Kayapo. The chiefs were stunned and frustrated when it became
clear that Body Shop was trying to get the chiefs to legitimize the agreement, which still had not been

Alone In Berlin, Red Tails, Saving Private Ryan, And...
WORLD WAR 2 MOVIES The movies we have been watching in class were: Alone in Berlin, Red

especially wars. However, the movies tend to add real and fictional events. Therefore, these motion
pictures were not completely historically accurate, but they do help in spreading the principle idea of
history. The first movie, Red Tails, is based on the Tuskegee Airmen in Italy during WW2. It provides
visuals of what problems this group of colored airmen faced. For example, they were only given used,
hand me down flying equipment from the white airmen. In addition, they were barely permitted to be

Universal Design is all around us, not just in some of the products that we use but also in education.
According to one article Universal design in education is a framework of instruction that aims to be

states that children are not defined by their disability, but rather, their disability represents a
characteristic, one mere facet of who they are and how they interact with the world (Darragh, J. 2007).
As a special education teacher I need to be open to new ideas on how to teach my students. I will have
students with a wide range of disabilities from mild to moderate to severe. Incorporating universal
design in my lessons and within my classroom is just one practice that will help my students.
Universal design opens up the doors to so many new ideas that can be used in the classroom to help

the same way, each of my students will have their own way of learning some might pick things up

In conclusion, Universal design has opened up so many different doors for teachers in and outside of

Gender Gap In Pay
Introduction
Gender Pay Gap also referred to as Gender wage gap, gender income difference or male female
income difference refers to the difference between the earning of men and women (Victoria, 2006).
The European Union defines the Gender Pay gap as the difference between men and women s hourly
earnings (OECD, 2012). The difference may be measured on hourly, weekly, monthly, or yearly
earning. The difference is expressed as a percentage of the men s earning. However, the difference
varies from one industry to another, from one country to another and from one age group to another.
On average, men earn higher than women do across different sectors and nations.

This can be attributed by disruptions that women have later in life especially relating to family life as
well as older women who cannot access benefits that did not exist when they started working. For
instance, in the 25 and below age group segment, the gender pay gap was relatively lower than the
other age groups. However, Cyprus, Portugal, and the United Kingdom show a different trend to that
pattern, where employees between 25 34 Years registered a lower gender pay gap than the 25 years
and lower group. Cyprus with 0.5% recorded the lowest gap for the 25 34 year age group but had the
highest for the 45 54 age bracket at 28.5% and 27.1% for the 55 64 years and 28.7% for the 64 years

What Causes Eczema Essay
This article was a study of components that can potentially cause eczema to flare up . By this it means
that the person breaks out more in an itchy rash often in patches. Eczema is defined as the
inflammation of the skin that causes the skin to be dry and often times itchy. Many people have this
skin disease and there are many factors, environmentally that can affect it negatively. The factors that
were observed in this study were: clothing, temperature, humidity, sweating, pollen levels, exposure to
the sun, dust, unfamiliar pets, shampoo, and swimming. In this study, sixty children were used to be
observed for an extended period of time for 6 9 months while being exposed to these certain factors
that may cause their eczema to flare up. They used daily logging on electronic diaries to determine
their daily exposure to these factors and how their eczema reacted in regards to itchiness or how much
it bothered them and how much they scratched. The temperature, humidity, pollen levels were
determined and recorded from different scientific areas. The amount of exposure to the sun and the
other outdoor elements were logged by the parents. As well as the amount of sweat that was perspired

swimming and extended periods of exposure to the sun could. I actually can relate to this study
because I have eczema and those factors cause mine to flare up periodically, except for swimming.
The biggest factor that affects me is the temperature, humidity, allergies to pollen, dust, and pets
especially during the fall and winter seasons. I m fairly pleased with this article and the study it
provided. Although I think they should give a few scenarios to the factors or explain certain factors in
depth like the weather and explained how a child s eczema reacted to the given

My Creation Of A Soundtrack For Octavia E. Butler s...
Soundtracks to films often strive to represent the themes and feeling of the film, and direct the
audience towards particular emotions. A good soundtrack not only allows for the listener to understand
the film better, but it should also bring to mind particular scenes, images, or characters. Soundtracks
for books can do the same. In my creation of a soundtrack for Octavia E. Butler s Parable of the
Sower, I strove to encompass Lauren s journey throughout the novel and the various emotions that she
experiences. Lauren writes about her experiences, and therefore, her reactions become central to the
audiences feeling and. The songs follow along with Lauren, with her despair, death, and the need for
survival. As I scoured through song after ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She and her friends lost their families, homes, and everything they own. The lyrics in the song say: We
sat and made a list / Of all the things that we have, which Lauren does as she scavenges through her
charred house, and when Harry and Zahra figure out what things they can save ( Things We Lost in
the Fire ) (Butler 160, 173). The song is somber and reflective of the horrible events that have
occurred, much like Lauren s journal. Bleeding Out by Imagine Dragons is representative of the
journey Lauren, Harry, and Zahra endure as they move north in search of safety. Throughout the novel
the group experiences hardship, pain, hunger, and love. They are willing to put themselves out on the
line for each other as the song supports: I m bleeding out / So if the last thing that I do / Is bring you
down / I ll bleed out for you (Imagine Dragons). The song is melancholy, but also fast paced which is
indicative of the group s movement through the terrain. They come across different factions where
they experience bloodshed, death, and learn more about the horrors of the world. Yet they stick up for
one another and join together to form a stronger unit. In once particular scene, the original trio comes
up against wild dogs, which the song can relate to directly: When the hour is nigh /And hopelessness
is sinking in /And the wolves all cry / To fill the night with hollering (Imagine Dragons). The incident
with the dogs on the beach as Laruen describes, are wild

Red Figure Volute Krater
From the St. Petersburg Museum of Fine Arts to the Metropolitan Museum of Arts, this paper will
analysis and compare the visual aspects of the Red Figure Volute Krater (330 320 BCE) and the earlier
Terracotta Krater (750 735 BCE) about their similarities and differences that extend across time.
Along with the two kraters we will also discuss the quality of St. Petersburg Museum of Fine Arts
environment. The St. Petersburg Museum of Fine Arts stands out from its surrounding with is
dimensions alone, being only two stories it is dramatically shorter than any other building and its
width covering near a city block makes it wider than any other building in the vicinity. The exterior of
the museum constructed in a similar design to that of Greek ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The size of the krater being the second largest artwork, at approximately thirty inches, in the room
helps it stand out from other pieces, but is still eclipsed by the Terracotta Krater (750 735 BCE) at
approximately forty two inches. Size is not the only thing both kraters share that continued across
time, contrasting colors also prevails in both pieces. The Red Figure Volute Krater (330 320 BCE)
illustrating a white subject against a black background and the Terracotta Krater (750 735 BCE) with
black subjects and yellow or lighter background. Kraters themselves are known to be used to water
down wine, but with the funerary scenes on both kraters they would have been more likely used as
grave markers. The placement of the Red Figure Volute Krater (330 320 BCE) being next to other
grave markers within the museum helps to exemplify this as well as the information label associated
to it. The use of visually encompassing the main figure persisted across time, but with slight
differences. In the Red Figure Volute Krater (330 320 BCE) the main subject is surrounded by a
Naiskos , or funerary shrine, whereas the Terracotta Krater (750 735 BCE) the main subject is covered
or surrounded with burial cloth. Another visual aspect that both kraters have are figures on the
outsides showing respect towards the deceased. On both kraters the figures showing respect are
illustrated as women since in that era men were not to show emotions or attend the funeral. The Red
Figure Volute Krater shows this by the reddish brown figure how women were portrayed and the
Terracotta Krater by small marks indicating breast. Across the length of time, both kraters also have
other commonalities such as the main figure s nudity for their heroism or divinity and the inclusion of
spears and/or war

Essay On Jersey Shore
Television genres in the post network era are important because genres can target a larger range of
audience, which results in higher ratings. Genres also help create different and unique narratives that
influence popular culture. Jersey Shore illustrates how the reality television genre has a huge impact
on popular culture, society and viewers. Jersey Shore is about women and men some of Italian descent
that party and do whatever they want. The show explicitly illustrates the roles of guidos (males) and
guidettes (females), these people are working class Italian Americans. Even though the show is
representing the Italian population in the U.S. it is not doing a proper job because the representation is
incorrect. The characters and performances ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Colbert Report is an American late night talk show, which is a news satire and comedic program.
The show illustrates how the comedy and satire genre is important when it comes to informing people
about political and controversial topics. The comedic element of the show makes the program
entertaining and informative. In comparison to The Harvest of Shame this documentary that was used
to inform the American people about a sever issue made people feel bad, it was depressing. The
Colbert Report takes boring political issues and makes them interested, which appeals to younger
adults. Many young adults do not pay attention to politics because it is boring or too difficult to
understand. The show takes a political subject, simplifies it and makes it interesting. For example, in
one episode he discusses the 2016 election and makes fun of a statement of Donald Trump, it s not
only funny, but informative. Stephen Colbert is always talking to the audience directly, which creates a
better connect with the viewers. Shows like The Colbert Report bring people together to discuss
important topics. The comedy and satire of the show is just a technique to reach more people and
create a safe environment to discuss these sensitive topics. There are many talk shows that are
comedic and satire because it makes the show self reflexive. In conclusion, genre is a major factor
when it comes to creating

Alison Bechdel Sparknotes
I believe that Alison Bechdel used this book as a platform to highlight the various challenges and
issues that some homosexual individuals among others in the LGBTQ community face. She wanted to
allow to the audience to empathise with this community in a different light. In some cases, when
people don t understand the unfamiliar, the tend to fear it. So, with this book, people from a variety of
backgrounds might have discussed the underlying issues in the LGBTQ community using her book.
With this being the starting point, some individuals, such as myself, were able to do some indepth
research about the LGBTQ community and understand it better. I am not really fond of graphic
memoirs. The only other graphic memoir that I ve encountered ... Show more content on

She mentioned that her father was molested by a farm hand when he was young. Even though her
parents didn t act like a married couple, he trusted her enough to tell that deep of a secret to her. I feel
like she betrayed him even though he also betrayed her multiple times. That is not a secret a mother
should tell her children about their father. However, it also seems like the mother was blaming the
homosexuality on the molestation. Maybe that was her way of dealing with his unfaithfulness
especially with young men.
There are many instances where they show Bruce looking at young teenagers, or even interacting with
them. Her mother ignored the behavior and Alison, in the future, just didn t fully address his behavior.
The first instance was when Bruce looked at the altar boy and her mother just rolled her eyes at him.
Then Alison had a narration stating But would an ideal husband and father have sex with teenage
boys? (pg.17). It was quite a telling scene about her mother s attitude towards her father. She was
willing to let her husband prey after young boys instead of protecting them. It also surprised me how
hypocritical Bruce was. On their trip to New York, when John wandered off, Bruce was extremely
alarmed and he mentioned a phrase Chickenhawks . Elly defined them as men that prey on boys. This
shows that Alison was aware of his pedophilic ways but in a way chose to ignore them.
Although she chose to ignore some things

The effect of food source (mung bean Vigna radiata vs. black eyed pea Vigna unguiculata) on relative
inhibition of acetylcholinerase due to malaoxon in bean beetle Callosobruchus maculatus
Background and Hypotheses:
Recent studies, most notably Gbaye et al. (2011, 2012), have investigated the sensitivity of bean
beetles in the genus Callosobruchus to organophosphate insecticides (OPs). Economically this is
important work given that these beetles are pests that threaten agricultural yields of legumes. OPs
work by inhibiting the enzyme acetylcholinerase (AChE) in the beetles. Without this enzyme, the
neurotransmitter acetylcholine can t be broken down and its overflow leads to the eventual death of
the beetle. Results obtained by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
73 76 of (Course Supplement, 2014).
Once we collected the data on the 15 individual beetles, we found the sample mean relative inhibitions
per experimental group and their respective sample standard deviations. We then used a two tailed t
test analysis to determine if the difference in means is statistically significant. Our experimental
prediction: if we perform the colorimetric enzyme assay (described on pp. 73 76 of the Course
Supplement) on two groups of beatles one cultured on mung beans and one cultured on black eye peas
we will observe a statistical difference in the respective relative inhibitions.
Results and Data Analysis:
Beetles bred on mung beans exhibited a mean relative inhibition of 35.32% with a sample standard
deviation of 26.41%. Beetles bred on black eyed peas exhibited a mean relative inhibition of 35.42%
with a sample standard deviation of 17.97%. This data is reflected in the bar graph in Figure 1 below.
The large bars show the respective means and the error bars show a range of one standard deviation
about the mean.
A two tailed t test yields a t value of 0.99. For 13 degrees of freedom, t critical is 2.16 for a 95%
confidence level and 1.35 for an 80% confidence level. This is reflected in Table 1 below.

This literature review aims to review the debate as to whether military expenditure has a positive or
negative impact on economic growth in Israel, in order that gaps in the literature can be identified with
a view to identifying a research question for this dissertation. This literature review will accordingly
examine the main schools of thought in regard to the impact on economic growth.
The connection between military expenditure and economic growth has been analyzed from several
perspectives, at the industrial, national and private sector firm levels. Other issues have been
researched, such as relationships between civilian and defence research and development and the

Judging by the data, one would most likely conclude that an enhanced proportion of military
consumption promotes growth.
Deger and Sen (1995) claim that there is a minimal number of definitive empirical results and provide
conceptual reasons for these results. They focus on concepts such as causality and simultaneity that
may have affected the results. Suggestions to resolve this flaw consisted of a mixed time series, which
was used by Macnair, Murdoch Pi and Sandler (1995) to achieve positive findings for a small number
of NATO countries. The results vary and Ram (1995) surveys the discussions of the various research
approaches.
A fundamental issue with the combination of cross section studies across countries with time series
studies of a single country is that there is no market price for military output and the factor payments
are funded by civilian tax revenue. Deger and Sen (1995) produce a more appropriate model which
takes into account the nature of the public good provided by military security and the need for it to be
publicly funded. Viewing defence expenditure as a public good enables researchers to take into
account a range of interactions between military expenditure and economic growth. The interactions
considered are a) increased security, which directly improves social welfare b)

First, Armstrong knows lots of chemicals and might have brought them to the island, he also knows

Catapults Research Paper

Catapults
The physics behind a catapult can be a complex topic to grasp. But, when broken down, looking
individually at their historical uses, design types, and related physics concepts, it s surprisingly simple
to form an opinion on which catapult design is most effective and why. These categories, when
combined, define the uses, functionality, and effectiveness of the historical (and modern day) catapult.
Catapults were originally developed in 399 B.C, and had derived their shooting power from springs,
twisted bundles of cords, or heavier weighted cords. When the twisted ropes on these catapults were
released, a stone weighing around 50 pounds could be launched the length of four football fields,
though some of the largest catapults could throw stones up to 600 pounds, and some of the smaller
models were used to launch flaming arrows at foes (Jason Richie, Designing the Tools of War).
Catapults, you see, were used for a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The ballista is also a very viable option, but I truly believe the trebuchet is the way to go, and let me
explain why. First, the transfer of energy that occurs when the weight is dropped, should allow the
projectile to launch quickly and have significantly more force, which is important when hitting the
intended target. Second, a trebuchet was originally used more than the basic catapult, and far
preferred, due to its greater range capabilities and improved accuracy. The mechanical advantage of
dropping the counterweight to lift the beam, allows the payload to achieve a higher velocity, which
creates a faster more efficient catapult. There are many other types of catapults that use different
physics methods to achieve high speed and a strong force, but between the more complicated
structures and the varied intentions for uses when being built, each other model performs tasks
differently. Therefore, I believe the best catapult option is the classic

  • 3. Individualism In Dead Poets Society, And Dead Poet Society Transcendentalists in the 1830s challenged society s normality. They broke stereotypes and began not depending their actions according to others. Director Peter Weir and Author Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote about transcendentalist s ideals of education to rebel against commonly accepted behavior. Transecdiliasts assured and trusted themselves that the outcome is for the better. Similarly, in the film, Dead Poets Society, Mr. John Keating teaches an English class navigating the class through the uncertainties of life. The boys in Keating s class, discover themselves and begin to live life focusing on their passions. Self Reliance, is an essay about expressing your individualism and overcoming the social expectations in life. Together they both share the fundamental virtues that to a live successful life with no regrets, one must trust their self identity and carpe diem. For one to live a life with no regrets they must fully embrace themselves self in trusting oneself allows one to them fully accept who they are and express it. In the film, Dead Poets society, people can see Mr. Keating s unquie type of teaching style. Neil Perry, one of the brightest students at Welton Academy, obtains a new type of perspective from this unusual English class and decides to try out for the school performance. He gets the lead however; but his father does not approve, and forbids Neil from acting in A Midsummer Night s Dream. Neil finds himself conflicted and talks to Mr. Keating. (Dead ... • 5. Emperor Penguins Essay The Last March of the Emperor Penguins? Emperor penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri) in the Antarctic are fascinating flightless birds that are able to withstand incredibly harsh environments, where wind chills can reach to 76°F. Even though these penguins are able to survive the freezing temperatures, their breeding success and mortality rates are based primarily on the sea ice concentration (SIC) and sea ice extent (SIE) throughout the seasons. Sea ice concentration is a variable for climate scientists and nautical navigators to find the area of sea ice compared to the total at a given point in the ocean, whereas sea ice extent refers to a region as ice covered or not ice covered. During the late 1970s, there was an elongated atypical warm period with reduced ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sea ice is a vital breeding and nursing habitat for emperor penguins, where their colonies are formed far from the open sea. The breeding penguins, would then, go on scavenging trips throughout the entire development and chick nurturing stages. However, during the period with thick and wide sea ice cover, the trips become longer. Adult penguins would have to use up more energy for travel, which will result in lower offspring provisioning and hatching success (Barbraud Weimerskirch, 2001, p. 185). Also, sea ice could influence the emperor penguin by topdown processes . Diminished sea ice could allow access to hunting areas of the emperor penguin by potential predators, such as killer whales (Jenouvrier et al., (2012), p. 2759). Consequently, there are no emperor penguin remains found in killer whale diets. Nevertheless, penguins that have used up so much energy (especially males after their 4 months fast) are vulnerable to other predators, which could result in a lower survival rate. This predicament is mainly caused by the change of variables called sea ice concentration and sea ice ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Relationship Between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth Essay The Relationship Between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth Macbeth and Lady Macbeth face an extraordinary situation involving a strong supernatural theme and murder and treason of the highest kind. However Shakespeare still cleverly manages to make Lady Macbeth and Macbeth relate to audiences of all eras and to convey a strong moral message within his play. The relationship between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth is fascinating to study. Shakespeare constantly changes their attitude to each other throughout the play, making it hard to form a clear cut opinion of their relationship. My personal opinion is that, although events in the play certainly draw Macbeth and Lady Macbeth apart, their love for one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By letting his wife announce that they must kill Duncan, Macbeth is able to offload some of the guilt of the deed onto her he uses Lady Macbeth as a scapegoat for his already guilty conscience. Upon sending the letter Macbeth immediately goes to see his wife. In my opinion he does this so that Lady Macbeth is ready to begin to override Macbeth s good characteristics immediately. When Macbeth loses Lady Macbeth s support later on in the play he is forced to act independently of her, and so loses the ability to murder. I feel that his actions throughout the play are an indication of Macbeth s dependency on his wife, as well as his misuse of their love in order to claim the title of King. He refers to Lady Macbeth as: [his] dearest partner of greatness showing that Macbeth envisages them sharing the power of the throne. In his soliloquy Macbeth admits that he has no spur To prick the sides of [his] intent which indicates that Macbeth knows that he will require Lady Macbeth to be his spur , and coax him into murdering Duncan. He also knows that by allowing Lady Macbeth to take up such a domineering role she will take the murder out of his hands, thus freeing him from a great deal of guilt. Upon receiving the letter, Lady Macbeth immediately responds to Macbeth s wishes, realising that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Theories of Emile Durkkheim Essay The Theories of Emile Durkheim Emile Durkheim also referred to as The Father of Sociology (Thio, 2002), played a critical role in establishing theories based on Social Facts (Thio, 2002) He is best known for his views of social reality ( Thio, 2002) and their ties into how a society works. He was said to be a sociologist who played an important part in the development of structural functionalism (Thio, 2002), and sociology as a whole. His four major studies, or publications, have assured him a place in the history of sociology s intellectual development (Thompson, 2002). His scientific way of thinking did not make it easy for him to do well in the studies he required to get into this elite school (The Biography of Emile Durkheim, 2000)). After two attempts for the entrance exam he was finally accepted in 1879 (The biography of Emile Durkheim, 2000). After being accepted to Ecole Normale Superievre, Durkheim decided on a career as a philosophy teacher, as sociology was not a subject offered at secondary schools, or the university( The biography of Emile Durkheim, 2000). Connections Between U.S. Presidents and Roman Emperors Throughout history, countless leaders, had their periods of leadership among the masses; a story of how they claimed their superior position. Are there connections though between leaders and their lives, positions, and their form of a kingdom? My goal is to find these connections between the United States current and former presidents, Barrack Obama and George W. Bush and two Roman emperors, Augustus and his great grandson, Nero. After a 20 year period of transition from the republic and the assassination of Julius Caesar, Augustus returned to Rome forming an alliance with Mark Antony and Marcus Lepidus known as the Second Triumvirate which led to the establishment of the Roman Empire. Nero attempted to rebuild Rome and organize the construction of the buildings that were burned or destroyed. The attempt to rebuild Rome cost immense funds that the Rome State Treasury didn t have, causing the Roman currency to decrease in value. Nero was surrounded by death and as emperor was known for his many of his atrocities and executions, including the execution of his mother. Even as a child, Nero was surrounded by death in his family. Nero s father, Lucious Ahenobarbus, died when Nero was 2 years old. Several other family members deaths followed including: his uncle, aunt and cousin; his half brother, and his mother. After becoming emperor, he had ordered the execution of his mother for having indecent relations. Later in his reign, Nero became one of the first prosecutors of Christians. After the fire of 64, Nero tortured and executed countless Christians. Was known by some historians as the antichrist that the bible predicted. Our government now has great contrast to the Roman Empire but like the up Empire, we look to one man for leadership and approval. In a democracy, that one man is known as the president. • 10. 2002 APUSH DBQ 2002 AP DBQ In the years following the War of 1812, the Era of Good Feelings evolved between the years 1815 and 1825. In the first half of this period, there was a strong sense of nationalism throughout the United States. However, political changes and economic differences between the states warped this nationalism into the sectionalism that divided the country into north, south and west regions. Celebrations of unity within the United States soon turned into disagreements concerning representation within the government and the differences within the national government caused by the emergence of different Republican factions. States distanced themselves from working collectively in a united economy. They were largely concerned with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, there was a high tariff placed on foreign goods. This was beneficial for the north because it increased the chances of Americans purchasing the goods produced in their factories. However, this was disadvantageous for the south. Since slaves were viewed as objects, imported slaves were considered imported goods and were sold with high tariffs attached to them. The three regions were becoming more sectionalist because they were becoming increasing concerned with problems facing their own area, and not the country as a whole. The sectionalism that emerged during this time period did so within a short period of time. This is easy to see in the election maps of 1820 and 1824. Within these four years, the United States went from being uniformly supportive of one candidate (Monroe in 1820), to having support for several candidates. While much of the south was in support of Andrew Jackson, the first president who did not have a formal education and supported the common man , much of the north backed John Q. Adams, the eventual winner. These maps illustrate the regional differences that eventually led to the lack of a majority vote. Sectionalism became quite prominent with the emergence of different factions within the Republican Party and eventually the creation of new parties. Each region was sectionalist in that they voted for the candidate who would be the best advocate for their area, rather than leader for their country. The unification of the ... • 13. The True Hero In Wuulf And Beowulf As Walter Cronkite, a former CBS anchorman, once said, In seeking truth you have to get both sides of the story. In the epic poem Beowulf, the successful Danish warriors and their king, Hrothgar, are heroically saved by Beowulf, the strongest, bravest man across all seas from Grendel s twelve year massacre. In the novel Grendel, by John Gardner, the plot unfolds similarly; however, it is told through the perspective of Grendel, the antagonist in Beowulf. The significant difference in perspectives poses the complex question to readers asking, Who is the real monster? In the epic poem and novel, Hrothgar, the Danish King, is the true monster through his influence, corruption, and unmoral actions. Being the ultimate ruler, Hrothgar initiates his monstrous character by influencing his loyal warriors. Although some may argue that the Danes are evil, Hrothgar molds and motivates their actions as their respected king. Rising to power and fame, Hrothgar built Herot, a celebratory mead hall to distribute treasure and feast with his warriors. Through success in battles, Hrothgar, whose word was obeyed all over the world, rewarded his loyal Danes with his treasure full hands in Beowulf (6). Receiving praise and craving eternal fame, the Danes followed Hrothgar s instructions at all costs. Furthermore, the Danes are influenced by Hrothgar through the Shaper s songs. • 18. The Death Penalty And The Fourteenth Amendment The death penalty to many people could be considered unconstitutional under the eighth and the fourteenth amendment s. People fear nothing more than death itself because death is final. Execution dates being carried out promptly with assigned dates after a fair trial would discourage almost anyone from committing future crimes that are worthy of execution. We as a society are based on the need for retribution and vengance. Making a wrongdoer pay the price equivalent to the price the wrongdoer did. Sparsely carrying out executions prolongs the mental and emotional suffering of the victim s family and friends. It cost taxpayers millions of dollars per year, more than general population to house a death row inmates. Allowing death row inmates to sit on death row for 25 plus years is a lugsury most dont deserve. With less than 10% of all inmates being exonorated in the past 200 years of death penalties it is unclear why executions are not more readily carried out. Currently, the total number of inmates that have been executed in the US is 1,434. While the total number of inmates currently on death row is 2,943, 55 of which are female inmates. Our desire for retribution dates back as early as the 18th Century BC. We feel the need to see the wrongdoer have consequences for their actions. Inheritance allows to create classes which are derived from other classes, so that they automatically include some of its parent s members, plus its own. For example, we are going to suppose that we want to declare a series of classes that describe polygons like our CRectangle, or like CTriangle. They have certain common properties, such as both can be described by means of only two sides: height and base. This could be represented in the world of classes with a class CPolygon from which we would derive the two other ones: CRectangle and CTriangle. If we specify a more restrictive access level like protected, all public members of the base class are inherited as protected in the derived class. Whereas if we specify the most restricting of all access levels: private, all the base class members are inherited as private. For example, if daughter was a class derived from mother that we defined as: | class daughter: protected mother; | This would set protected as the maximum access level for the members of daughter that it inherited from mother. Some norms carry greater significance in our lives than others. The terminology mores was inclined to norms that are extensively observed and hold extensive moral significance. Mores also means taboos of society, things that are not accepted, such as chewing with one s mouth closed is expected or eating in a sloppy way and at a fast pace is not an acceptable behavior. Mores classify what is merited and what isn t. When a norm is violated it is defined as deviance and even though the word deviance has a negative connotation to it, it s not. Deviance means and individual is behaving differently from what society feels is normal behavior. If a person is deviant from norms it doesn t necessary means that they are doing something bad or immoral. For example, most Canadians eat meat on a regular basis and they feel by doing so is normal behavior, someone who doesn t eat meat (vegetarian) they would be considered deviant. Their behavior is different to what the majority considers acceptable or normal. And just like norms are relative deviance is relative as well. It depends on the context, individual groups or location in the world and the standard of deviance change based on these factors. (Macionis, John J. • 27. The Nature And Existence Of God The existence of suffering in the world provides a case against the existence of God as the problem of evil. It seems that the God of classical theism is incompatible with the reality of the world around us; could such an all loving, all powerful and all knowing God exists in conjunction with instances of immense and seemingly pointless suffering? It does seem unlikely that such a God exists alongside evil. However, it is questionable whether this is a proof that God does not exist. The problem of evil which forms as; is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God? (Lactanitus). Epicurus here challenges the properties we associate with God, suggesting that those properties do not add up to reality and be consistent with perceived belief about the nature and existence of God. We can form the problem into an inconsistent triad (J.L Mackie, 212) which runs that God is omnipotent, omnibenevolent and evil exists. He postulates that no valid solution of the problem which does not modify at least one of the constituent propositions , positing that is would be impossible to remove one of the characteristics of God without moving the image of God so far away from our traditional understanding that it becomes unrecognisable and the problem still remains. When the raven complains to the jackal of its problem and how it hopes to solve the problem by clawing the snakes eyes out, the jackal tells her the parable of the heron and the crab. Briefly, the old heron uses the innocent crab to trick the fish by claiming that the fishermen are coming to wipe them out and that he can help them by each day carrying them to a pool where they will be safe. The fish agree to the heron s trick. The heron carries a few fish away each day, but as soon as he is out of the sight of the other fish, he eats them. One day when the crab wants to be taken to the pool, he sees all the fish bones and realizes what has been happening. The crab then attacks the heron, pinching its throat and killing it. • 31. Character Analysis Of Lady Macbeth In the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare, the character Lady Macbeth and her various qualities are used to reinforce the idea that being ambitious can be beneficial, however it can also have dire consequences. This Shakespearean tragedy is set in Scotland during the Middle Ages, and follows the tale of Macbeth, a Scottish Thane, who succumbs to temptation in an attempt to fulfil a set of prophecies and become King. During the play he becomes consumed by his dark desires and murderous ambitions, which ultimately lead both himself and his wife to their deaths. The author s various messages surrounding being ambitious are shown through; the immense determination of Lady Macbeth, her successful manipulation of her husband, and her callous nature. These qualities and their implied messages to the audience are explored in the play through the use of; dialogue, symbolism and other various language features. One of Lady Macbeth s greatest strengths is her drive and determination to succeed in life. Moreover, she was willing to do anything, even kill her own child and dash d the brains out of it to get what she desired. Consequently this shows the immense lengths to which she is prepared to go to and it is also highlights of the fact that sometimes you have to make sacrifices in order for your objectives to be realised. The greatest sacrifice which Lady Macbeth makes is to that of her feminism, Make thick my blood, stop up the access and passage to remorse. This imagery of blood is an extreme example which shows that Lady Macbeth is willing to stop being a woman because of her great male ambitions. However, as with all the recurring blood imagery throughout the play, it is also a show of that fact that she will not feel any guilt for committing the atrocities she does nor will she regret the fact that she abandoned her womanhood. Consequently, the reason Lady Macbeth has been developed in such a way by the author is to show the cosmic power of females. Women have historically been oppressed and so Lady Macbeth would have had to fight her entire life in order to achieve greatness, whilst men like Macbeth get everything handed to them on a golden platter. • 33. Rene Descartes And George Berkeley In this paper, I will be writing about the traditional problem of mind and body. I will look at the views of Rene Descartes and George Berkeley. I will be siding with Descartes. The mind body problem ultimately encases the difficulty understanding how the mind and body interact, what they entail, and how they interact and communicate. Rene Descartes believed that the mind and body are two separate entities, as stated in Descartes s Dualism . He held the notion that while the body is in fact a part of the physical world our minds are not. Our minds are the consciousness that recognizes its existence through thinking and understanding. Descartes rationality behind disconnecting the mind from the entity that is our body is essentially due to the mind not meeting the criteria to be considered a part of the physical world. His reasoning being that physical things are extended and take up space, nor are they conscious. The mind does not have extensions. It does not take up space, therefore it is not a part of the physical world at all, but its dislocation from the physical world does not forfeit its existence. Descartes uses his criteria for material and immaterial by explaining the physical properties and attributes of the mind, or lack thereof: To be conscious is not to be of a certain shape or size or to move in a certain way, but a quite different and indefinable property of which we are each intimately aware when we reflect on our own minds. In 92 and 93, Gordon Roddick, Anita s husband and BSI s executive director, brought four Body Shop country head franchisers to the Indian communities, charging them $25,000 each. Again, the Indians never saw any of this money. After one of Anita Roddick s earliest visits, she announced that Body Shop would extend the project to other Mebengokre villages. They began competing for Body Shop s favor, which strained relations among the traditionally egalitarian culture. Roddick and Body Shop never made good on their promise. In the meantime, Body Shop began heavily promoting its links to the Kayapo. It announced what it called the first ever intellectual property rights agreement. However, the Kayapo had agreed to nothing. In 1993, a group of 30 Kayapo chiefs were hastily called by Gordon Roddick to a meeting in Brasília, capital of Brazil. The chiefs happily believed that Body Shop was at last going to make good on its promise to expand purchases of nut oil. What they did not know was that Body Shop had recently gotten word that the press was about to report that it had never reached an intellectual property rights agreement with the Kayapo. The chiefs were stunned and frustrated when it became clear that Body Shop was trying to get the chiefs to legitimize the agreement, which still had not been negotiated. ... All of these films were based on 1900s events, especially wars. However, the movies tend to add real and fictional events. Therefore, these motion pictures were not completely historically accurate, but they do help in spreading the principle idea of history. The first movie, Red Tails, is based on the Tuskegee Airmen in Italy during WW2. It provides visuals of what problems this group of colored airmen faced. For example, they were only given used, hand me down flying equipment from the white airmen. In addition, they were barely permitted to be hands on in the fighting of the war, so they were given jobs to protect lands. The European Union defines the Gender Pay gap as the difference between men and women s hourly earnings (OECD, 2012). The difference may be measured on hourly, weekly, monthly, or yearly earning. The difference is expressed as a percentage of the men s earning. However, the difference varies from one industry to another, from one country to another and from one age group to another. The song is somber and reflective of the horrible events that have occurred, much like Lauren s journal. These categories, when combined, define the uses, functionality, and effectiveness of the historical (and modern day) catapult. Catapults were originally developed in 399 B.C, and had derived their shooting power from springs, twisted bundles of cords, or heavier weighted cords. When the twisted ropes on these catapults were released, a stone weighing around 50 pounds could be launched the length of four football fields, though some of the largest catapults could throw stones up to 600 pounds, and some of the smaller models were used to launch flaming arrows at foes (Jason Richie, Designing the Tools of War). Second, a trebuchet was originally used more than the basic catapult, and far preferred, due to its greater range capabilities and improved accuracy. The mechanical advantage of dropping the counterweight to lift the beam, allows the payload to achieve a higher velocity, which creates a faster more efficient catapult.
