African American Women In Higher Education Literature Review
The gross under representation of African American women in senior leadership positions in higher
education is very apparent today. Although there has been a small increase of African American
women administrators in higher education, the literature suggests that both race and gender are
alarming forces in the lives of African Americanwomen. This review of the literature will focus on
African American women in higher education, career development, power issues affecting career
development, and historical and current barriers. By examining the issues surrounding racial and
gendered stereotypes, an understanding of the variables that persist in organizations that restrict the
upward mobility of African American women in leadership can be

Descriptive Essay About Last Day
Last Day
I woke up at four a.m., showered, changed, brushed my teeth, combed my hair and drove to work,
but that s when the fundamentals of the world changed. Earth practically quivered with the
anticipation of the future for the world. That day, the world was thrown out of balance. The
volcano under Yellowstone park exploded forever changing the world as we knew it. The volcano
wasn t expected to erupt for centuries, yet it still exploded. Millions of people died from just the
ash alone. Families trapped in buildings and killed as the roof caved in, crushing them to death.
Others separated from their other loved ones, unable to contact them and know if they were alive.
During that crisis, here I am driving to work, unaware of the calamity ... Show more content on

Matt, s that you? a voice called out. Yeah, it s me, I answered back walking in the direction that
the voice originated. I turn the corner and I see my boss, Ed. He was checking the stock and
writing it down on a little clipboard. I need ya to manage ta front. Can ya git ta store run in and
open et up? Ed asked, his voice sounding gruff. Yeah, of course, I reply. Fanks, Ed grunted back,
never averting his gaze from the stock and clipboard. I headed to the back where all the
electrical equipment and light switches were stored and flipped all the switches. The lights
sputtered before they began to illuminate the store. All the machines hummed with life and their
lights flickered on. I walked over to the door and turned on the open sign that lighted up. I
headed back to the front and went behind the counter, waiting for customers. I heard the ring
from the door and turned toward that direction. A frantic woman rushed in and grabbed as much
food and water as she can hold before carrying it all up to the counter. That s unusual. She must
be an early bird. It usually takes at least an hour for anyone to show up. I scanned the items
regardless, ringing up to the total of eighty six dollars and forty nine cents. The woman handed
me a credit card and I swiped it. She quickly thanked me before she hurried outside to her car.
Then a whole family came into the store and repeated the process of the woman before. This

The Influence Of John Locke On Child Development
In early centuries child development wasn t as important as it is now. Children were treated as
adults, and no one paid attention on how a child develops. As soon as a child reaches an age
where the child can take care of himself or herself, the child would start working, and acting as if
he or she was a mature person. The idea development does not being or end with children, however
centuries ago no one knew or even care about any type of human development. It was during the
seventeen and eighteen century when some philosophers and educators started arguing how
important childdevelopment was, and different ways on how a child can develop through stages.

Cadogan wrote guideline on how the raise children right, and his wrote was full tips for parents
and nursing, and those guidelines were much needed during that time because children were
suffering. Plato and Aristotle were Greece philosophers who had different opinion when it comes
to child development. Plato believed children are born with knowledge well Aristotle believed
knowledge came from experiences. Plato stressed child s discipline and self control, and Aristotle
stressed child s up bringing and the child s individual need. Later philosophers John Locke and
Jean Jacques Rousseau both took on the history of child development with their different approach.
Both Locke and Rousseau wrote series of books about the steps of development that children go
through. Locke argued by that knowledge comes experience like Aristotle. Rousseau believed
society and parents should give freedom to child, and let them learn by interacting with them
physically and emotionally. Rousseau was a true believer of education like Pestalozzi; he believed
educating the children is important part of their development. Charles Darwin and Johanna
Heinrich Pestalozzi both write about child development during the eighteen century, however
Darwin s focus was mental or cognitive development well Pestalozzi focus was towards education.
Both Darwin and Pestalozzi observed their child, but they were observing different reasons.

Human Papilloma Virus And The Prevalence Of Cervical Cancer
Human Papilloma Virus and the Prevalence of Cervical Cancer
Introduction
Did you know there is more of a link between cervical cancer and HPV than smoking and lung
cancer? Cervical cancer is currently the fourth most common cancer in women and the second
leading cause of death from cancer in women. Along with those statistics, human papillomavirus is
the most common sexually transmitted viral disease amongst men and women worldwide. The
prevalence of women having a strain of HPV that ultimately leads to or increases the chance of
cervical cancer is highly relatable. What is pathophysiology, signs, symptoms, prevention, and
treatments of this ailment? You might ask will be covered in the next few pages of this paper.
Pathophysiology
There are several strains of the human papillomavirus the highest risk strains for cervical cancer
are HPV 16 and 18 those strains cause 70 percent of cervical cancer along with a few other high
risk strains. There are low risk strains that cause things such as common warts, which are seen
on the skin, or genital warts seen on the mucous membranes. For the purpose of this paper, we
will only be covering strains that can lead to cervical cancer. Transmission of HPV is fairly easy
which may be why it is so prominent in our society today. HPV is transmitted primarily by sexual
activity but can also occur due to prolonged exposure to things like skin to skin interaction, or wear
of clothing that has been chronically exposed to the virus. It is

The Last Night Of The World Chapter Summary
What if the end of the world was tonight? Many people often worry about their last day of life on
Earth; if it were to ever end. This fear tends to make people think about what they could do to
make the best of their remaining time. This situation is shown in the short story The Last Night
of the World by Ray Bradbury. In this story, there are two unnamed characters who talk about
what they are thinking and feeling on their last day. These two characters connect with each other
at a higher level, dealing with the last day of their existence together. The theme of this short story
is to live life to the fullest while you can. If people live this way, then the end is less scary, and the
journey there is more enjoyable. This theme is portrayed through the characters words, describing
how they feel about the situation. The first way the theme emerges is in the girl s words. The girl is
younger than the man and is more cautious about the matter. She isn t scared, but more... Show

He is older and wiser, and has mostly come to peace with his life. The first way this is shown is
when he says Sometimes it frightens me; sometimes I m not afraid at all but at peace (1). This
shows that although he is scared of the future, he is at peace with his past and what will happen.
The second way his words show is serenity with the situation is when he is describing the things
he will miss. He says I won t miss a thing except perhaps the change in weather, and a glass of ice
water when it s how, and I might miss sleeping (3). This quote is saying that he will miss the
simple things, not the big ones. The last way the theme is emerged is when the man and his wife
go to bed as normal. It says, They washed the dishes and stacked them away with special neatness.
At eight thirty the girls were out to bed and kissed goodnight... (3). This scene show that although
the world is ending, people are still about to be normal about

Similarities And Differences Between South Africa And Haiti
In South Africa the first period up to 1910 indicated the establishment of schools, which were
mainly church schools, and the centre of a State system. According to Malherbe (1925:24),
education in the early days was haphazard and the nomadic people prevented the establishment of
permanent schools. Parents were responsible for hiring a schoolmaster who moved around with the
community providing tuition. Home instruction was therefore normal. Educationwas therefore a
private and local affair (Squelch, Private Education in South africa, 1997)

The Importance Of Teaching Calculus
Introduction to the Paper
My teacher cannot teach math. Why do I need to learn algebra? These are the common quotes we
often hear from high school students. The student believes what current taught in high school not
relevant for their everyday life activities is. They re some validity to their beliefs, but they should
not close their minds to math, especially algebra. Algebra is the gateway to higher math like
calculus. Why should anyone study mathematics? Calculus prepares students for higher level
sciences, like physics, chemistry, genetics and engineering courses. Calculus is an important and a
gateway course to prepare students for higher level science, engineering and math courses (STEM).
Calculus is difficult because all the concepts are abstract and learning these concepts in the
traditional ways is always boring to most students. The traditional method of teaching is teacher
orientated presenting the theories in a lecture style manner and reinforcing the concepts by doing
homework word problems. It is my understanding that majority of students who have problems with
calculus lacks the basic knowledge of algebraic simplifications (factoring) of functions followed by
visualization of the process.
A newer approach to teaching calculus is revisiting the concepts of functions using PBL. PBL is
an acronym for Problem Based Learning or Project Based Learning. For this paper, PBL will be
referred to as Project Based Learning and not Problem Based Learning.

Why Is Feudalism Important In The Middle Ages
In our society, we believe money is the key facet for power, however, in the medieval ages,
money barely had any value compared to land. Feudalism was a political, economic and social
system which organized the government by using land. The manor was a key aspect of feudalism
because it was where the feudal levels worked together to improve the economy. One of these
feudal levels contained the shepherd, who was an important role in the manor as he helped
feudalisms ability to meet its people s needs. Feudalism allowed for military to protect the culture
of its people, and without the shepherd, the whole system would have collapsed (Biel 9).

It helped the European empire rise from the dark ages, making the empire civilized.
Charlemagne, a Frankish King who reigned for about half a century, used feudalism as a base
for building his empire by establishing a central government (Biel 20). The key to be successful
in the feudal system was land, and the fiefs would be given based off of loyalty. During the
Medieval times, the people who owned land had power. Land provided the possibility to gain
military and political power (Nardo 14). Because of this, the feudal system evolved to become a
political tool to gain land and power. There are 3 main levels in this system, that depend on each
other to get what they need and contribute to others. Firstly, the king, who gave fiefs in exchange

The stagnation of Chinese astronomy in Ming Dynasty
Long ago, people began to observe the sky and astronomical objects to make predictions and
modify calendars. Until early Ming Dynasty, China was way more developed in astronomy than
that of European countries . Gaocheng Astronomical Observatory was built in 1279 in China that
enabled astronomers to calculate the accurate time of one year that was 300 years ahead of
European scholars working it out (K.G 37). However, in the 18th century, Chinese starcatalog was
relying on European data and the ephemerides were calculated on the basis of Newtonian theory
(Renn 283). Besides the failure to compute data ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

and attended McGill s University in Montreal, Canada. After working as McGill s Athletic director

As for professional basketball leagues in 1937 Goodyear, Firestone, and General Electric started
up the National Basketball League. This league was formed by industrial teams sponsored by
companies and even independent teams. Mostly all these teams were based in the Midwest. Now
after World War II ended there was a move to establish a true nationwide league. This lead to the
Basketball Association of America being born. Now in 1949 this year was the end of the National
Basketball League and its remaining teams joined the Basketball Association of America. With all
the teams combined the National Basketball Association was formed.
For colleges Ivy League schools such as Yale, Harvard, Cornell, and Princeton formed some of the
earliest college leagues. A group of basketball writers in 1937 from New

only a year after the original tournament. The tournament that these coaches started up was then
taking over by the NCAA. It eventually grew into what we call today March Madness.

How Is Portia Presented In Julius Caesarce
In Scene 1, Portia converses with the Prince of Morocco very politely and even invites him to
dinner before he chose the casket, which seems like she is in favour of having the Prince of
Morocco as her suitor. However, in Scene 7, after he chooses the wrong casket and leaves, Portia
says A gentle riddance , which shows us that she is very happy that the Prince of Morocco is not
going to be her husband.
Through these scenes, I learn about Portia s gracious character and her tact in using her appearance
to deceive her suitors. This is because she does not want to hurt the feelings of the suitors, but at the
same time, she is witty enough to dupe them, without them knowing that she is doing so. This
reveals the theme of Appearance vs. Reality,

African American Vernacular English (Aave)
African American Vernacular English
The United States of America is one of the world s most ethnically diverse and multicultural nations.
Even though there is not an official national language, most Americans speak Standard American
English (SAE). However, the most prevalent native English vernacular dialect in the United States
is African American Vernacular English(AAVE). According to Sharon Vaughn, AAVE is a dialect
used by some African Americans (110). In order to examine AAVE, one must explore the origins,
grammatical features, and prominent resolutions, which created a precedent for educating students
that speak dialects other than Standard American English.
For years, scholars and sociolinguist partook in debate over the ... Show more content on

Wolfram notes that double negatives are never interpreted as positives (305). An AAVE speaker
may say, Wasn t nobody in there but me and him to express that no one was in there but him and me.
The final and most recognizable trait of AAVE is the use of the habitual be. The habitual be
conveys events that happen routinely. Jack Sidnell offers several examples in African American
Vernacular English Ebonics. He illustrates, Standard English present perfect: He has been married.
AAVE been: He been married (Sidnell). In the Standard English sentence the implication is that, he
is now no longer married. However, in the AAVE sentence the implication is quite the opposite: he
is still married. The four above mentioned grammatical features are not the only rules that AAVE
speakers follow, but these rules are the most common and recognizable traits of AAVE.
As aforementioned, AAVE is the most prevalent native English vernacular in America.
Consequently, educators often encounter AAVE speakers and writers in their classrooms.
Educators must inform students that their home language is not Standard American English and
create effective classroom methods to educate non native SAE speakers. Faced with these constant
occurrences, the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) issued a
statement on students rights to their own language. The resolution states:

Ziglar also said, A solid foundation for children involves a solid moral base meaning...you need to
practice what you preach.
You need to look for and expect good from your children, stop looking at the bad and negative
things and look for the good and positive in them and they will bloom (Ziglar, 1998, p. 51). Be
specific when you find something good in your child, tell them what it is exactly and continue to
lift them up.
Being Available as an EmotionCoach
According to Gottman (1997),
We need to help our kids deal with their emotions by being their emotion coaches and we do that
with five steps 1) by being aware of their emotion, 2) recognize the emotion as a time for intimacy
and teaching, 3) listen to them and validate their feelings, 4) help label the emotion with words and
5) set limits while finding ways to solve the problem (p.24).
In step one, the focus is on recognizing when you are feeling an emotion, you can identify the
feelings, and you are able to be sensitive to emotions in others (p. 76). Step two, when parents can
use a negative experience to bring forth bonding with their children it builds intimacy and it teaches
them how to deal with their feelings (p.93). During step three, two things take place, listening
empathetically and validating the child s feelings. Gottman suggests that this may be the most
important step in emotion coaching! Not only are you listening with your ears, but you are

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Islamic Cerdit Card And...
4.0 ISLAMIC CREDIT CARD
Life without a cerdit card is hardly possible in modern economies, but cerdit card purchases may
involve interest payments. Generally there is no problem from a Muslim point of view if card
holders pay the credit card company within the grace period, so as to avoid paying interest, though
not all fuqaha concur. Various Shariah councils have made liberal rulings that enabled financial
institutions to develop Islamic credit cards that provide credit for longer periods than the usual one

Universal Design Principles
1. What are the primary principles of Universal Design AND how can these be applied to
educational contexts? (2 points) Universal Design is the practice of incorporating the needs of
disabled individuals into the buildings, schools, and businesses. The primary principles of
Universal Design are equitable use, flexibility, simplicity, perceptible information, forgiveness of
mistakes, decreased physical effort, and space. Some examples of this practice are ramps, Braille
signs, lower desks and tables, and wider hallways. This can be applied in an educational context by
making classrooms and learning spaces accessible to all students. Students with disabilities would
be able to focus on their education rather than how they are going to get to... Show more content on

All individuals must face oppression, stereotypes, and limitations. An example of this in the
reading was Jason Kingsley. Jason was born with down syndrome and has struggled his whole
life with society telling him what he is unable to do. When he was born the doctors told his
family that he couldn t learn, form relationships, or carry out a normal life, however in response
Jason has proved all this incorrect. He has a job, writes, makes friends, takes public
transportation, and has traveled to other countries. This wasn t always easy since many
employers don t always hire disabled individuals or know how to act around them. I believe that
all disabled people struggle with this kind of discrimination however the obstacles or disabilities
people face vary. Disabilities can be caused by genetics, chemical imbalances, traumas, or
accidents. They can challenge learning, senses, mental health, or physical abilities. Another
example in the reading was the story of Edward Murphy. Edward developed PTSD after a bomb
exploded when he was deployed in Iraq and struggles with severe anxiety due to this. Unlike
Jason, Murphy wasn t born with a disability but developed it during life. Murphy also has more
opportunities to (in a way) reverse his disability or at least reduce the affect that it has in his

Outline For Atonement
Atonement by Ian McEwan

Briony sees her sister and her sister s boyfriend out the window. Briony thinks something bad is
happening, but her sister is only swimming into the pond to find parts of a broken vase.
Briony realizes that she doesn t want her play to be performed so she rips up the poster of her play
and stops rehearsing it.
Robbie accidently gives Briony the letter for Cecilia that tells of his sexual desire for her instead
of the one that tells how sorry he is for breaking the vase. Cecilia then reads the letter and
everything makes sense to her, but she notices that it wasn t sealed and Briony is acting suspicious.

Conflict In A Tale Of Two Cities By Charles Dickens And...
As with any historical fiction of work of literature, conflict is a neccesary element in a novel. It is
mainly used to build plot and suspense. A Tale of Two Cities written by Charles Dickens and
Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott are both good examples of novels in which conflicts between play an
important role and in this novelit is mainly the struggles between social groups which are of big
importance. There are a lot of differences but also similarities concerning the points of view of the
narrators on the struggles between the social groups. In this essay I will discuss these differences
and similarities between the opinions of Sir Walter Scott and Charles Dickens on social conflicts.
Dickens used the development of a conflict between the French lower class and the French
government and aristocracy to build plot and suspense. The nobility (the government and
aristocracy) is extremely rich and the French lower class are exactly the opposite, very poor. The
French lower class suffered for a long time under the tight rulings and restraints of the French
government and aristocracy. The lives of ignorant French poor people are described by Charles
Dickens as horrendous:
And who among the company at Monsignor s reception in that seventeen hundred and eightieth
year of our Lord, coud possibly doubt, that a system rooted in a frizzled hangman, powdered and
gold laced, pumped, and white silk stockinet, would see the very stars out! [›] 1

Vehicle Pollution And Vehicle Pollution
If we have a look at traffic today, we see more and more cars that are powered by electricity
instead of the ecologically harmful fuel most cars used to drag their power from. Although the
first electric car was invented by the Scottish inventor Robert Anderson between 1832 and 1839,
a crude electric carriage powered by non rechargeable primary cells, between now and then the
majority of cars we found on the streets were powered by fuel. But still, although more than 2
million electric vehicles now travel the world s roads, they only make up 0.2 percent of the total
light duty passenger vehicleshare around the world. And still, this is a major step in the right
direction. In 2016, the number of electric cars increased by 60 percent, and in 2015 by 77 percent.
Electric cars sure are in the ascendant, just why is that a good thing? The answer is quite simple
and everywhere known; vehicle pollution. And because this vehicle pollution is a major problem
for us and our environment, the negative externalities of this vehicle pollution are going to be
analyzed and advice on how to solve or better, get rid of the problem, is going to be offered.
To start off, here is a short definition of what exactly negative externalities are. They are costs that
are suffered by a third party. These costs are also called the social welfare loss. Producer and

Use of Fantasy in Langston Hughes s On the Road Essay
Use of Fantasy in Langston Hughes s On the Road
Langston Hughes s short story On the Road begins and ends realistically enough: his protagonist,
Sargeant, enters a strange town one winter s night during the Depression and finds himself without
shelter, as many did during this era. Hughes gives Sargeant the additional burden of being an
African American in the white part of town; therefore, he faces the perfectly plausible obstacles of
shelters that drew the color line and racist police officers who beat and imprison him. But despite
the realistic beginning and ending of the story, Hughes places an elaborate fantasy segment
involving Sargeant talking to a stone Christ who has broken off the cross in the story s middle. ...

In the fantasized conversation, Christ confirms for Sargeant that people like those in the town
have kept him nailed to a cross for nearly two thousand years, and that he is glad that Sargeant
has finally liberated him. Christ s meaning here is clear: that many Christians have reduced him
to merely a symbol of suffering rather than having allowed the spirit of what he taught to roam
freely. While they may claim to revere Christ s image on the stone crucifix, the townspeople have
completely failed to heed Christ s message of brotherhood and love, as proven by their reaction to
Sargeant s attempt to enter their church. The white townspeople have proven as cold and
unresponsive as the snow which blankets their town. The newly liberated stone Christ may not
know where to go next, but I m leavin here, he tells Sargeant. Christ feels that going anyplace else

Edgar Wright
Edgar Wright Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead By Brearna Sandri
Shaun of the Dead
In this close viewing I will be using the films Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, directed by Edgar
Wright, to show significant aspects/techniques of different scenes used in both films. I will be
focusing on the features of sound effects, dialogue and comparing near same scenes within two
different films and the aspects that Edgar Wright was trying to cover.
Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz both have fence jumping scenes. In Shaun of the Dead, the
scene is opened with Shaun opening the gate quite forcefully along with the rest of his team.
Shaun says The Winchester s just over there and David says in a sarcastic tone, Just over there
behind the 20 garden fences? When David is saying the last bit of his sentence the camera pans
over the fences in which they have to jump to show audiences what they have to jump over. For
example, to show why David is being sarcastic towards Shaun, and why it s being used in that
particular scene, Shaun then says What s the matter, David? Never taken a shortcut before? , and
smirks while turning behind, and tries to jump over the fence but ends up making the fence fall
over. He then picks himself back up and subtly tries to make it seem like he didn t just break the
fence. The background noise in this scene is filled with car alarms, house alarms and deep music
/sound effects. This creates the effect of a crisis situation, as they are in a zombie apocalypse.

Nevada Access Pipeline Is Running The Headlines
Introduction Recently Dakota Access pipeline is running the headlines. Native American tribes and
their partners, drove by the Standing Rock Sioux, have been challenging the Dakota Access
pipeline, a venture that would transport oil from the Bakken oil fields in North Dakota and
Montana over the Plains to Illinois. The nonconformists, numbering in the thousands and including
individuals from several distinct tribes, contend that finishing the pipeline would profane hereditary
grounds, undermine the water supply, and unjustifiably trouble the Standing Rock Siouxtribe, which
is probably not going to profit by any financial advancement that goes with the venture. Energy
Transfer Partners, the enterprise behind the pipeline, recommends the venture will prompt to more
noteworthy monetary advancement and expanded security and productivity contrasted with the
trains that presently convey Bakken unrefined petroleum (Harris and Gonchar, 2016). Basically in
the entire issue there are many stakeholders but two parties are main. First, Energy Transfer
Partners and second, Native American tribes. Both the parties have their requirements and BATNA

stakeholders, their goals and their BATNA regarding the specific dispute.

The Theory Of Consciousness And The Body
When the word consciousness is used regarding human beings, the word itself usually implies that
those individuals are conscious of being conscious. Many individuals assume that the mind, the
brain, and the body react as one. But the idea of the mind is not related to the concept of the brain
or the body. These differences allow philosophers to determine a people s consciousnessin the world
around them. Individuals derive the concept of consciousness from their experience because
consciousness itself comes from one s youth. Consciousness can be described as an individual s
ability to become aware of his or her surroundings including both the external and internal world
which they are present in. The idea of consciousness can be explained by obtaining something
simple and changing it into something complex, also known as the emergent property. The process
of emergent property can be achieved in two steps that allow philosophers to determine who and
what possess consciousness.
The process of changing matter into energy, which is the first step of the emergent property,
combines subatomic particles in a specific structure to form atoms. The final step of the emergent
property process occurs when those atoms combine to form a more complex form. In humans, as a
whole, the most complex combination of atoms develops to process the brain s activity and is
known as the central nervous system. But because the mind is not correlated with the brain, humans
can be aware of their

Imagine your modern day dairy barn, with your usual milk cows: manure scrapers clean the floors

This dairy barn features the Lely Astronaut, a new, reliable employee that uses the cow s behavior
to cause them to enter the stall and increase their milk production, and requires almost no human

Another benefit is that to a consumer on the outside looking in, the system is well rounded, and
it s easy to see the cows are happy and healthy. But what motivates the cattle to enter the
Astronaut? Cows begin learning to enter stalls like this early in their life and it all revolves
around one thing. Food! At six days old the calves enter a small stall to get their milk. This then
turns into bigger stalls, where full grown cows eat their daily feed. When it s time to learn how
to enter the Astronaut, where nutrient rich concentrates and relief from a full udder awaits, it s
usually no problem getting the cows inside. The secret here is association, a fairly simple idea
that goes all the way back to the 1890 s with Pavlov and his dogs. Once the cattle learn to
associate the milking stall with only good things, they re willing to enter by themselves, without
the usual poking and prodding of a directed cow system, making things much easier for both the
people and the cattle involved. Getting inside the Astronaut is not a problem either. Cows prefer a
straight, uncomplicated route, and Lely has designed the I flow just for that purpose. Although it

Short Story Of Seashell Bay
Me and Clog roamed the streets for days, searching for scraps of food and a dry place to sleep.
Eventually, we stumbled into a soup kitchen. From there, a warden took us to the police station,
and a few days later, they found my next of kin Harry Jewel. I d never met him before and Mummy
never spoke of him.
The Sprigs settled on her lap but she was miles away with her thoughts.
Each night, I slept on the floor in the police cell. Then one morning, they wrote my name on a label

How long did you stay on the train? asked Misty.
Around seven hours. They said the journey would have been shorter if the engine hadn t broken
down. When I arrived at Seashell Bay, a man on the platform came out of his hut and offered to

Paper On Sexual Assault
Introduction of Subject The military has made progress in reducing sexual assault and connecting
victims to services. Sexual assault runs against the grain of military standards of service and value,
yet it continues to happen. Repercussions for reporting these assaults are creating challenges for

The Factors Of Food Waste In Public Schools
Growing research shows steady increase in food waste throughout the globe. One largely
contributing factor is food waste produced from the public schools. The amount of food wasted in
schools, according to the USDA, has ranged between 10 37% of calories served (Buzby, J.,
Guthrie, J., 2002). It is difficult to compare public schoolwasteto global amounts due to the scarcity
of specific data this would depend on region, economic status and additional factors associated with
how and why foodis wasted in schools. Having said that, this is a large enough problem that it is
actively noticed and prompting intervention. With these numbers rising, food waste negatively
impacts costs for the community, carbon emissions, water use and more.
However, students in the public schools are not completely to blame, as some factors affect food
waste after the implementation of some lunch programs, which are targeted to increase encourage
students to reach their recommended adequate intake of nutrients, such as the Healthy, Hunger
Free Kids Act of 2010 (Hakim, S., Meissen, G., 2017). Likewise, food serving methods have also
played a role in the amount of food wasted by students, by using the offer model and serve model
approaches in cafeterias. A non exclusive list of other issues affecting food waste in schools are:
socioeconomic status, accessibility of food at home, the time of day food is consumed, the amount
of time given to eat, student activity level, health limitations or

describes public high schools and how the standardized tests and state requirement have changed
the teaching styles. These new teaching styles have forced students to memorize and regurgitate

Furthermore, vending machines are available to adolescents throughout the day. The
availability of vending machines gives students a good alternative to the cafeteria. The cafeteria
is usually crowded and hence vending machines allow students to skip the lines and grab a
quick bite. Also some students may not be able to get to the cafeteria before it closes for various
reasons; vending machines provide them with the convenience. They also allow for students to
grab a drink after vigorous exercise. However, a problem with all this is that it may disrupt
regularly scheduled meals. This in turn greatly disturbs the natural biorhythms of the body.
Because the body performs certain functions on a time schedule, irregular eating habits disrupt
the natural clock work of bodily processes ( Is Eating Between Meals Healthy? ). As mentioned
above, vending machines are loaded with junk food. Junk food is known to increase blood
sugar levels which can lead to behavior problems and impaired learning ability in children. This

The Lovesong Of J Alfred Prufrock And Preludes
The portrayal of alienation and existential nihilism inherent in modern life pervades T.S Eliot s
poems, therefore, directly resonating with Jeanette Winterson s perspective of the modernist writer.
By exploring the isolation of men and the futility of life in a modernised society through The Love
Song of J Alfred Prufrock (1915) and Preludes (1915), T.S Eliot questions the uncertainty of the
Modernistic lifestyle. Both these poems which are derived from T.S Eliot s historical and cultural
context in Post war Europe, present aloofness and nihilismas manifestations of the superficiality and
pretensions of the modern urban environment. T.S Eliot s poetry has transformed the world of
modernist poetry and remains valued as contemporary society... Show more content on

In the poem, Prufrock believes that he has endured a monotonous life and constantly expresses
his discontent and restlessness. Prufrock emphasises on his discontent of what he perceived as
the emptiness and meaningless of modernistic life. During the WW1 era where society was
saturated by disillusionment and discontent, life was seen as unpromising and meaningless.
This directly correlates to the attitude of the poem, as Prufrock constantly relays the
desolateness of his life. He asserts his overall boredom and perceives life as futile when he states
I have measured my life with coffee spoons . Through T.S Eliot s use of metaphor, Eliot refers to
the mundane aspects of Prufrock s life as the most significant moments of his life, which
confronts responders with the mendacity of their lives and reflects Eliot s perspective. Here,
Eliot s nihilistic perspective of life directly relates to Jeanette Winterson s critical perspective,
stating that he was such a sensitive soul that he was easily overwhelmed by impressions, by
situations, by events, by people...he suffered continually. Winterson implicates that Eliot was a
highly sensitive individual as such the experiences he faced personally and those that others faced
deeply affect him, therefore accounting for his nihilistic view of life and humanity itself.
Furthermore, T.S Eliot utilises repetition through, For I have known them all already, known them
all to reinforce Prufrock s realisation of the meaningless life he leads. The repetition of known
them all , infers that Prufrock s life is absent of intrinsic value and completely worthless as he has
no more to offer. Prufrock surrenders to the superficial, barren aspects of life and society,

Baby Boom Attachment Theory
In late 1987, the movie Baby Boom was released in the United States. This was a film that
depicted the life of J.C Wiatt, played by Diane Keaton; a driven business woman with nothing to
tie her down or get in her way. She was proud to be free of any of life s burdens, such as children
or marriage. She had a man in her life, but he was just as driven as she was, both happy to live
their lives together but separately at the same time. As the film opens, we see J.C. walking
confidently down the city street, she had purpose, she had direction and nothing was going to stop
her or get in her way, just like the other women who made up 53% of the workforce. Then she
received one phone call that had the potential to, and ultimately did, change her life... Show more

Women were fighting to get and hold the top offices in business, and break away from the
stereotype that said their place was in the home. J.C. too had proven she had made that stand for
herself, and was out performing the men around her. She knew she had walked away from the
other side , but she was okay with her choice. During the film her boss, as well as Steven, try to
explain to her what she is giving up as she comes to key decision making turns in the road. In an
article by Anne Marie Slaughter, president of New America foundation, shares that yes women
do feel they must sacrifice either their career and/or their family and cannot have it all
(Slaughter web). She goes on to share that, how we as Americans value a mother s time at home
versus her time in the workplace is changing. Sadly, still in 2016, some mothers feel they still
have to make that choice. If a woman wants to go out and be the main provider, or hold an equal
role of her husband, there should be a way to make it work. In some homes, the families have
found a plan that works, with shared schedules by the man and the woman. Others have close
family members that help to care for the young children, or the children are placed in daycare or
afterschool care. The growth of working women/mothers had grown

Zajacn
The Tailor of Inverness is, touching, and an example of what theatre can be: an outburst of
discoveries. A son,Matthew Zajacn, Unravels his father s experiences during the second world war.
The high quality of Matthew Zajacn actually performing his own work and story makes it
personal. It was true, it happened and the illustrated storytelling made me embrace theatre for what
it can do. The show was a universal idea of how your past can be miscommunicated or untold.
We are taken on a journey of the non straightforward story, the happenings of how he came to be a
tailor in Inverness. Taken jailbird by the Soviets in 1939 and made to work east of the Urals, then
Germany, Tehran, then Egypt, to integrated into the British Army, fighting in North... Show more

The change of costume allowed everything to make sense. The embodiment of his father s
mannerisms was clear and nicely portrayed. The tense atmosphere was dimmed by down with the
use of a violin player in the background: this added to the actors energy and emotions and made the
story more interesting, history can be uninteresting, but this made listening to facts easily. The
Tailor of Inverness has a share of modern relevance, like how people have so many mixtures and
differences in their family trees and that sometimes is not taken into account today. How it allows
us to reflect on what has changed and why it changed. How we have to be specific about where we
come from but sometimes it s way more complicated than what most people think.
The Backdrop design showed the idea of the dead and the people who were lost in the war and the
lonesome but distinctive blue dress that hung as a symbol of his loss and memory of his unknown
sister. Some moments were Hard to understand, but maybe that was affected by the complicated
family story and the various places and occurring at that time that made it seem that

Examples Of Survival In The Young Man And The Sea
Sometimes, people try to keep something that means a lot to them, whether it is something as
small as a ВЁmemoirВЁ, which is a token of friendship. In the novel The Young Man and the
Sea by Rodman Philbrick, a little twelve year old boy named Samuel Beaman displays this
throughout the book. The biggest conflict that he has is the fact that he needs to try and earn
money himself because his father is too depressed and drunk since his wife (Samuel s mom)
passed away. Since Skiff is stuck in a situation where his familyis threatening to break apart, he
decides to become the ВЁman of the familyВЁ and goes out to try and earn some money just so
his family can keep on going. Without any money, there will be no hope for Samuel and his father.
I think this shows that survival often leads to desperation and can often make you do things that
you never thought that you could do. First off, Skiff tries to keep his family alive by earning
money even though his father is showing no proof on helping Skiff. He does... Show more content

One factor that plays a huge role in Skiff being successful is the fact that he never ever gave up.
He just kept on trying out new solutions for the problem that he had, and if one solution didn t
work, then he would try another. This is because he would do anything to try and keep his family
together, no matter what it meant or what the expenses were. If he wasn t as determined, then he
eventually would have given up and become depressed like his father. You should always give
your best towards something that you set your mind towards, and if you really want to achieve
your goal, all you have to do is try. Never give up, no matter how hard life seems to become, no
matter how bad the situation

Example
Disney has launched its theme parks in three international markets (Tokyo, Paris, and Hong Kong).
In the Disney s globalization strategies, they have got one lucky success in Japan, one fail in
France and additional success in Hong Kong after failure in France. In which country Disney s
international business is success?
In which country is failure? Let s find out and consider, what are the causes of success and failure?
Tokyo Disney was launched in 1983 and it was a huge success even if Tokyo Disney was a copy
cat of its American theme park. I believe that behind success, there were Japanese characteristics.
For example, Japanese are usually keen to adopt western cultures which mean that Disney
characters and management style were not significant problem in Japan.
Japan tends to easily accept that a foreign culture. Accept without any criticism, without the
traditional interpretation of foreign cultures. Japan s isolation in the geopolitical side is always a
strong interest in and curiosity about foreign cultures. Disney also could be a successful business in
Japan because of the generosity of the Japanese people for foreign cultures. With a great success,
Disney launched Euro Disneyland but they faced many problems. The huge mistake they

Gender Relations In English Literature
Literature has a great connection with the construction of gender relations in society in a particular
period written. Gender relations presented in works of literature vary from one period to another.
However, at the same time, the relations have similar bases but the ways they are approached by the
authors are different. English literaturehas introduced several genderrelations in its literary works
from the Elizabethan period to the modernism era. English authors challenged gender relations to
express their perceptions of genders through their work of literature. The representation of male and
female relations in English Literature influence the prevailing attitudes towards genders and reflect

The sonnet goes on about talking how real love is more sincere than the representation of woman s
physical appearance as perfection. Beauty fades away in time, and Shakespeare is curious about
his mistress s personality and character that caused him to truly love her. Shakespeare claims
that his lover doesn t represent a perfect beauty: My mistress eyes are nothing like the sun /If
hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head (1,3). His comparisons are undesirable and
unemotional, but afterward, he proves that his mistress outstands any goddess with a perfect
appearance. I grant I never saw a goddess go;/ My mistress when she walks treads on the ground.
(11 12). In these two lines, Shakespeare is stating the facts and is being straightforward. He
proves to us that her lover is nothing like a goddess, she doesn t have any extraordinary skills,
she just walks like a normal human being. Shakespeare s relationship with his mistress is deeper
than a physical appearance. He portrays the woman in a realistic way. He doesn t use positive
terms to praise her, but he uses simple expressions to show the reality of his love. If snow be
white, why then her breasts are dun; (3) in this line Shakespeare indicates

Yayoi Kusama s Narcissus Garden
Artist Yayoi Kusama s Narcissus Garden is an art installation which consists of 1500 convex
mirror globes tightly arranged in water reflecting and repeating the artist, the audience, and its
surroundings. The first exhibition took place at the 33rd Venice Biennale in 1966 and later on
around the world. Yayoi Kusama creates this masterpiece as an allusion to Narcissus in Ovid s
Metamorphoses. In Ovid s Metamorphoses, Tiresias, a blind seer, predicts that Narcissus, a
young boy, would live to ripe old age as long as he does not know himself (3.447). Narcissus is
desired by everyone: males, females, and even nymphs such as Echo. But Narcissus rejects
everyone s advances. Narcissus, worn out from people chasing him, rests near a spring and upon...

He dies in pain and transforms into a flower. Kusama s art installation relates to this myth as she
projects the audience and herself as Narcissus(es). With these convex mirror globes, Kusama
attempts to reveal the self love each person has for themselves. By revisiting the myth of
Narcissus and placing it in another mode of genre while challenging common art conventions,
Kusama attempts to display the sociological, psychological, and identity issues of her time. A
display of shimmering balls in water or field of grass does not seem to echo the Narcissus myth,
and yet Kusama s work is paratextual and hypertextual. Paratextuality is a term used by French
literary theorist Gerard Genette and is defined in Graham Allen s Intertextuality as all the elements
which stand on the threshold of a text (Allen 223). Kusama uses peritexts such as titles and labels
to draw the attention to Narcissus (Allen 100). When Kusama displayed her art, she placed two
labels next to it: Narcissus Garden and Your Narcissism for Sale . Her installation is also
hypertextual in that it involves the connection between the hypertext , a later text, with a hypotext
or earlier text (Allen 104) The word narcissus has multiple meanings which

The And Justice For All
With liberty and justice for all . These are the 6 words that conclude the pledge of allegiance of
our United States. This is what our nation was built upon: liberty and justice. Justice is the just
behavior (insert dictionary source here) or treatment that one may receive or give. To be just is
to be fair and righteous and this righteousness is the quality of being morally right (insert
dictionary source here). For someone to be shot in cold blood and the killer not have any
consequence goes against all morality. As an adult we have the cognitive ability to decipher
between right and wrong or good and bad behavior and know that if we violate these expectations
we need to be held accountable for our actions. Social Justice is fairness within a society. Fairness
with in a society or community is making sure everything is equal within that given society or
community. Distribution of wealth is really important. The top 10% of the community can t have
more money than the bottom 90% combined. There has to be fairness in opportunity that is
provided within the community. If one given population is allowed to partake in something or are
given the opportunity to better their lives than all the other given populations need to have that
same fair opportunity as well. The same goes for privilege. It s not fair when there are special
rights and advantages given out that will help a particular group but disadvantage another. Making
sure there are equal social rights

A Clear Midnight By Walt Whitman
The poem A Clear Midnight by Walt Whitman is only one quatrain, yet the poem enacts a threshold
experience. The time of midnight is the transition from one day to the next. Whitman uses this
moment as a metaphor from corporal existence to spiritual existence. Whitman describes this
transition to be clear as nothing is hidden nor feared. Whitman is trying to correspond the inner and
outer world, the physical and spiritual worlds. To achieve this harmony, Whitman seems to address
his soul; the soul being the idea that connects the physical and spiritual world. One may believe that
Whitman wants the poem to be trigger to his soul dwelling in eternity. A Clear Midnight is
contemplative and deals with the vast subject of human s nature to wonder. This poem is a... Show

This is the entirety of the poem, the interaction between his physical body and his spiritual soul.
Whitman is essential judging the deepest part of himself, his soul. The soul is so deep that you
need everything quite and peaceful just to think about it. Whitman is looking at his true self, not
physical but spiritually. Whitman is thinking about his essence, what truly make Whitman who he
is. The theme of A Clear Midnight is the connection between life and spirit and how we understand
that to be. As humans, our knowledge of the spiritual world is limited. All humans know about is
the physical world, how things look and how the work. But, human have the wisdom to
acknowledge that there is a spiritual side. The poem is saying that this spiritual side show our true
self, and how is it is difficult to look into. In A Clear Midnight , everything in the world has to calm
and quite just to even think about this spiritual side. Whitman shows that this spiritual side is hard
to comprehend and understand as physical humans. Yet, this complex side of people means the
most to humans. It shows how you think and why you think it, the true man that you

Paul Cazanne
Paul CГ©zanne s Mount Sainte Victoire Paul CГ©zanne is often called the first modernist painter,
and in his essay, CГ©zanne and the Unity of Modern Art Clement Greenberg, identifies CГ©zanne
as the most abundant generator of ideas and the most enduring in newness (Greenberg,83). This,
coming from one of the most influential art critics of the twentieth century, is not to be taken
lightly. CГ©zanne was extremely influential to the modernist painters of the early twentieth,
including Pablo Picasso and George Braque in their development of Cubism(Orfila,3). At the
beginning of his career, CГ©zanne painted in the impressionist style that was common for the avant
guard painters of the time, but he was disinterested in capturing the transitory... Show more content

He created a new way of observing nature. A type of analysis wherein he deconstructs what he sees
and then reconstructs it on the canvas, giving it a new structure. The impact of CГ©zanne s work
is seen throughout modern art for many years after his death. In 1907, the year after his death,
there was a retrospective of CГ©zanne s life, which is said to have been how the majority of the
avant garde was won over by his work (Ofila,3). Mount Sainte Victoire , being painted in the final
years of his life, is a great summation of CГ©zanne s technique and artistic style. It is therefore, a
good representation of his brand of modernism. All the techniques that CГ©zanne developed over
the course of his life were employed in this painting, which makes it, though not a very famous one,

Improving Reading Comprehension and Critical Thinking...
Determine a topic and develop specific questions At the school that I work at reading classes are
only required in sixth grade. In seventh and eighth grade reading classes can be taken as an
elective class. I strongly feel that all students in middle school still need guidance and continuous
practice with reading comprehension and critical thinking skills. Students who are beyond a sixth
grade reading class are not getting these reading skills that can be applied in all other academic
classes. As a teacher I can not change the fact that the school principal has decided that students in
seventh and eighth grade are not required to take a reading class. However I can find other ways to

Position Yourself at the Center: Co Teaching Reading Comprehension Strategies. This article
explains and shows how media specialist can incorporate co teaching. Research indicates that

students in the middle school level need reading comprehension and critical thinking skills.
According to this article, media specialist can position themselves to help improve learning and
student achievement in reading when co teaching is involved. This article refers to several case
studies where media specialists are a part of the co teaching experience. After taking a much

engaging lesson that takes place in the library and in the classroom in a two week period. The
lesson was developed when a seventh grade language arts teacher approached the media specialist

First Civilizations Influence On Egyptian Civilization
#12 Egyptian civilization, like other First Civilizations, did not develop by itself; many different
pastoral groups or civilizations influenced Egyptian civilization through trading goods and culture,
and helped Egyptians to develop its own unique culture. Being one of the greatest civilizations,
Mesopotamia, located between Euphrates and Tigris river, influenced Egyptcivilizationgreatly, as
they were close in location. Because they could interact easily with each other, trading flourished,
and many goods and cultural insights were exchanged. Wheat and barley, which were the main

Human Disconnection In Fahrenheit 451
The Human Disconnection within Fahrenheit 451 I define connection as the energy that exists
between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued; when they can give and receive without
judgement; and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship, Brene Brown
stated, who is an american scholar, author and public speaker. Human connection is pretty much a
necessity in life, and it is also something that Fahrenheit 451 lacks. In the story, written by Ray
Bradbury, the society focuses more on technological advances and not so much on the individuals
themselves. Throughout the entire book, you can see how unfocused people are on one another
and how much of their surroundings they don t notice. A good example of this is Montag

Although there has been a small increase of African American women administrators in higher education, the literature suggests that both race and gender are alarming forces in the lives of African Americanwomen. This review of the literature will focus on African American women in higher education, career development, power issues affecting career development, and historical and current barriers. By examining the issues surrounding racial and gendered stereotypes, an understanding of the variables that persist in organizations that restrict the upward mobility of African American women in leadership can be ... • 4. Descriptive Essay About Last Day Last Day I woke up at four a.m., showered, changed, brushed my teeth, combed my hair and drove to work, but that s when the fundamentals of the world changed. Earth practically quivered with the anticipation of the future for the world. That day, the world was thrown out of balance. The volcano under Yellowstone park exploded forever changing the world as we knew it. The volcano wasn t expected to erupt for centuries, yet it still exploded. Millions of people died from just the ash alone. Families trapped in buildings and killed as the roof caved in, crushing them to death. Others separated from their other loved ones, unable to contact them and know if they were alive. During that crisis, here I am driving to work, unaware of the calamity ... Ed asked, his voice sounding gruff. Yeah, of course, I reply. Fanks, Ed grunted back, never averting his gaze from the stock and clipboard. I headed to the back where all the electrical equipment and light switches were stored and flipped all the switches. The lights sputtered before they began to illuminate the store. All the machines hummed with life and their lights flickered on. I walked over to the door and turned on the open sign that lighted up. I headed back to the front and went behind the counter, waiting for customers. I heard the ring from the door and turned toward that direction. A frantic woman rushed in and grabbed as much food and water as she can hold before carrying it all up to the counter. That s unusual. She must be an early bird. It usually takes at least an hour for anyone to show up. I scanned the items regardless, ringing up to the total of eighty six dollars and forty nine cents. The woman handed me a credit card and I swiped it. She quickly thanked me before she hurried outside to her car. Then a whole family came into the store and repeated the process of the woman before. This fear tends to make people think about what they could do to make the best of their remaining time. This situation is shown in the short story The Last Night of the World by Ray Bradbury. In this story, there are two unnamed characters who talk about what they are thinking and feeling on their last day. These two characters connect with each other at a higher level, dealing with the last day of their existence together. The theme of this short story is to live life to the fullest while you can. If people live this way, then the end is less scary, and the journey there is more enjoyable. This theme is portrayed through the characters words, describing how they feel about the situation. • 12. The Importance Of Teaching Calculus Introduction to the Paper My teacher cannot teach math. Why do I need to learn algebra? These are the common quotes we often hear from high school students. The student believes what current taught in high school not relevant for their everyday life activities is. They re some validity to their beliefs, but they should not close their minds to math, especially algebra. Algebra is the gateway to higher math like calculus. Why should anyone study mathematics? Calculus prepares students for higher level sciences, like physics, chemistry, genetics and engineering courses. Calculus is an important and a gateway course to prepare students for higher level science, engineering and math courses (STEM). Calculus is difficult because all the concepts are abstract and learning these concepts in the traditional ways is always boring to most students. The traditional method of teaching is teacher orientated presenting the theories in a lecture style manner and reinforcing the concepts by doing homework word problems. It is my understanding that majority of students who have problems with calculus lacks the basic knowledge of algebraic simplifications (factoring) of functions followed by visualization of the process. A newer approach to teaching calculus is revisiting the concepts of functions using PBL. PBL is an acronym for Problem Based Learning or Project Based Learning. For this paper, PBL will be referred to as Project Based Learning and not Problem Based Learning. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

How Is Portia Presented In Julius Caesarce In Scene 1, Portia converses with the Prince of Morocco very politely and even invites him to dinner before he chose the casket, which seems like she is in favour of having the Prince of Morocco as her suitor. However, in Scene 7, after he chooses the wrong casket and leaves, Portia says A gentle riddance , which shows us that she is very happy that the Prince of Morocco is not going to be her husband. Through these scenes, I learn about Portia s gracious character and her tact in using her appearance to deceive her suitors. This is because she does not want to hurt the feelings of the suitors, but at the same time, she is witty enough to dupe them, without them knowing that she is doing so. Even though there is not an official national language, most Americans speak Standard American English (SAE). However, the most prevalent native English vernacular dialect in the United States is African American Vernacular English(AAVE). According to Sharon Vaughn, AAVE is a dialect used by some African Americans (110). An AAVE speaker may say, Wasn t nobody in there but me and him to express that no one was in there but him and me. The final and most recognizable trait of AAVE is the use of the habitual be. The habitual be conveys events that happen routinely. Jack Sidnell offers several examples in African American Vernacular English Ebonics. He illustrates, Standard English present perfect: He has been married. AAVE been: He been married (Sidnell). In the Standard English sentence the implication is that, he is now no longer married. However, in the AAVE sentence the implication is quite the opposite: he is still married. The four above mentioned grammatical features are not the only rules that AAVE speakers follow, but these rules are the most common and recognizable traits of AAVE. As aforementioned, AAVE is the most prevalent native English vernacular in America. Consequently, educators often encounter AAVE speakers and writers in their classrooms. Educators must inform students that their home language is not Standard American English and create effective classroom methods to educate non native SAE speakers. Faced with these constant occurrences, the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) issued a statement on students rights to their own language. The resolution states: We affirm the students right to their own patterns and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In step one, the focus is on recognizing when you are feeling an emotion, you can identify the feelings, and you are able to be sensitive to emotions in others (p. 76). Step two, when parents can use a negative experience to bring forth bonding with their children it builds intimacy and it teaches them how to deal with their feelings (p.93). During step three, two things take place, listening empathetically and validating the child s feelings. Gottman suggests that this may be the most important step in emotion coaching! It is mainly used to build plot and suspense. A Tale of Two Cities written by Charles Dickens and Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott are both good examples of novels in which conflicts between play an important role and in this novelit is mainly the struggles between social groups which are of big importance. There are a lot of differences but also similarities concerning the points of view of the narrators on the struggles between the social groups. In this essay I will discuss these differences and similarities between the opinions of Sir Walter Scott and Charles Dickens on social conflicts. Dickens used the development of a conflict between the French lower class and the French government and aristocracy to build plot and suspense. The nobility (the government and aristocracy) is extremely rich and the French lower class are exactly the opposite, very poor. The French lower class suffered for a long time under the tight rulings and restraints of the French government and aristocracy. The lives of ignorant French poor people are described by Charles Dickens as horrendous: And who among the company at Monsignor s reception in that seventeen hundred and eightieth year of our Lord, coud possibly doubt, that a system rooted in a frizzled hangman, powdered and gold laced, pumped, and white silk stockinet, would see the very stars out! Many individuals assume that the mind, the brain, and the body react as one. But the idea of the mind is not related to the concept of the brain or the body. These differences allow philosophers to determine a people s consciousnessin the world around them. Individuals derive the concept of consciousness from their experience because consciousness itself comes from one s youth. Consciousness can be described as an individual s ability to become aware of his or her surroundings including both the external and internal world which they are present in. The idea of consciousness can be explained by obtaining something simple and changing it into something complex, also known as the emergent property. The process of emergent property can be achieved in two steps that allow philosophers to determine who and what possess consciousness. The process of changing matter into energy, which is the first step of the emergent property, combines subatomic particles in a specific structure to form atoms. The final step of the emergent property process occurs when those atoms combine to form a more complex form. In humans, as a whole, the most complex combination of atoms develops to process the brain s activity and is known as the central nervous system. • 38. The Factors Of Food Waste In Public Schools Growing research shows steady increase in food waste throughout the globe. One largely contributing factor is food waste produced from the public schools. The amount of food wasted in schools, according to the USDA, has ranged between 10 37% of calories served (Buzby, J., Guthrie, J., 2002). It is difficult to compare public schoolwasteto global amounts due to the scarcity of specific data this would depend on region, economic status and additional factors associated with how and why foodis wasted in schools. Having said that, this is a large enough problem that it is actively noticed and prompting intervention. With these numbers rising, food waste negatively impacts costs for the community, carbon emissions, water use and more. However, students in the public schools are not completely to blame, as some factors affect food waste after the implementation of some lunch programs, which are targeted to increase encourage students to reach their recommended adequate intake of nutrients, such as the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010 (Hakim, S., Meissen, G., 2017). Likewise, food serving methods have also played a role in the amount of food wasted by students, by using the offer model and serve model approaches in cafeterias. A non exclusive list of other issues affecting food waste in schools are: socioeconomic status, accessibility of food at home, the time of day food is consumed, the amount of time given to eat, student activity level, health limitations or ... This prevalence has nearly tripled for adolescents in the past 2 decades ( Fact Sheet ). Furthermore, vending machines are available to adolescents throughout the day. The availability of vending machines gives students a good alternative to the cafeteria. The cafeteria is usually crowded and hence vending machines allow students to skip the lines and grab a quick bite. Also some students may not be able to get to the cafeteria before it closes for various reasons; vending machines provide them with the convenience. They also allow for students to grab a drink after vigorous exercise. However, a problem with all this is that it may disrupt regularly scheduled meals. This in turn greatly disturbs the natural biorhythms of the body. Because the body performs certain functions on a time schedule, irregular eating habits disrupt the natural clock work of bodily processes ( Is Eating Between Meals Healthy? ). As mentioned above, vending machines are loaded with junk food. Junk food is known to increase blood sugar levels which can lead to behavior problems and impaired learning ability in children. This is sometimes called the spike and crash syndrome. • 43. The Lovesong Of J Alfred Prufrock And Preludes The portrayal of alienation and existential nihilism inherent in modern life pervades T.S Eliot s poems, therefore, directly resonating with Jeanette Winterson s perspective of the modernist writer. By exploring the isolation of men and the futility of life in a modernised society through The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock (1915) and Preludes (1915), T.S Eliot questions the uncertainty of the Modernistic lifestyle. Both these poems which are derived from T.S Eliot s historical and cultural context in Post war Europe, present aloofness and nihilismas manifestations of the superficiality and pretensions of the modern urban environment. In the poem, Prufrock believes that he has endured a monotonous life and constantly expresses his discontent and restlessness. Prufrock emphasises on his discontent of what he perceived as the emptiness and meaningless of modernistic life. During the WW1 era where society was saturated by disillusionment and discontent, life was seen as unpromising and meaningless. This directly correlates to the attitude of the poem, as Prufrock constantly relays the desolateness of his life. He asserts his overall boredom and perceives life as futile when he states I have measured my life with coffee spoons . Through T.S Eliot s use of metaphor, Eliot refers to the mundane aspects of Prufrock s life as the most significant moments of his life, which confronts responders with the mendacity of their lives and reflects Eliot s perspective. Here, Eliot s nihilistic perspective of life directly relates to Jeanette Winterson s critical perspective, stating that he was such a sensitive soul that he was easily overwhelmed by impressions, by situations, by events, by people...he suffered continually. Winterson implicates that Eliot was a highly sensitive individual as such the experiences he faced personally and those that others faced deeply affect him, therefore accounting for his nihilistic view of life and humanity itself. Furthermore, T.S Eliot utilises repetition through, For I have known them all already, known them all to reinforce Prufrock s realisation of the meaningless life he leads. The repetition of known them all , infers that Prufrock s life is absent of intrinsic value and completely worthless as he has no more to offer.
