During the 1800s, there was a period of time where the European countries rushed to gain
territories in Africa and Asia, this was called the Age of Imperialism. Imperialism is the direct or
indirect control of one nation by another nation. This period happened for several reasons like the
European wanted to separate there ideas and culture and they wanted more power. During the
Imperialism, Belgiumgained one of the most Important countries in Africa the Congo. In 1908,
Congo was completely taken by the Belgian government and was renamed the Belgian Congo. King
Leopold II of Belgiumclaimed Congo mostly for resources. The Congolese people were forced to
work on rubber plantation when he was the ruler, because at that time rubber was used in the
manufacture of bicycle and automobile tires, and was a much needed resource worldwide. Of
course for every event there are effects, there are positive and negative effects that changed and
affected the Congolese ideas and thinking when they were colonized by Belgium.
