In the article, The Concept of Discourse Community, John Swales defines what a discourse
community is, and yet, he strongly argues that a discourse community must meet six specific
characteristics. A social group must have a set of common goals, methods of intercommunication
between its members, feedback, the usage of genres, a determined lexis, and a rank that defines the
level of expertise each member has.
With that being said, Swales highlights the need of a clarification of what differs a discourse
community from a speech community. In Erik s Borg (2003) article, Discourse community , the
concept of a speech community refers to actual people who recognize their language use as
different from other language users. (p.398) Additionally, Swales states that discourse communities
recruits its members by persuasion, training, or relevant qualification and speech communities
recruits its [members] by birth, accident or adoption . Even though speech communities do share

Capital punishment is the term used when an individual is put to death by the state or government
for the commission of a crime. Until recently, juveniles were not exempt from this punishment,
however they would generally need to commit a more serious offense compared to their adult

was unconstitutional, using the 8th amendment as their authority, while taking into account the

death of her daughter Magda. Rosa walked away for a short minute to retrieve Magda s blanket
and when she came back Magda was gone. When she found her she was being held by two
guards that threw her against an electrical fence. Rosa could not even go mourn over her baby s
dead body without the fear of being shot. Therefore the only thing she could do was shove the
shawl in her mouth to keep her from screaming.

tough person from the gang in The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. Later on in the book a member of

I attended the Celebrate CSUB 5k run on April 29th as a volunteer. This was the first ever
community race I attended and it was a memorable experience. I witnessed more than a hundred
people get up early in the morning and go for a run around California State University, Bakersfield

The reproductions of babies are fundamental to life and the ongoing creation of human kind. Our

overtime societies view and perspective on breast feeding has become more of a deviant act

As we know, being a leader requires being influential or being a charisma, whether its in a positive
or a negative way.
Though, scrolling through the pages of history, we sometimes see the portrayal of leading figures
that have been depicted differently in numerous descriptions. When it comes to one of the most
dreading military leaders throughout history, Attila, who unified and ruled over the the barbaric
nomadic called the Huns. Many accounts depicted such leader in different or similar horizons but
with numerous approaches and backgrounds. Prosper, a Christian reporter; Jordanes, an official in
the Roman government; a Greek writer known as Priscus; lastly Ammianus Marcilinus together a
Roman soldier and historian all depicted the leader, who would later be granted with the name
Scourge of God , depending on their perspectives and the way they were treated.
If we look and evaluate the accounts on Attila, there are differences and similarities. However, they
are not entirely opposite; in fact, they share some definite commonalities. The most obvious
similarity that we can easily tell about the accounts is that their authors arose inside the Roman
empire. Also, they all want to focus solely on the facts about the leader not other unnecessary
information. The Roman Empire which was recognized for its civilized culture, innovations and
