In Lecture I of Part II, Heidegger points out that asking the question of What is called thinking can be
incredibly diverse and complicated because there is not just one explanation for the question, although
at a glance it seems pretty simple to explain. He stresses four ways in which the question can be
posed. The first way asks what is designated by the word thinking, the second asks what logic has to
do with thought, the third asks what the prerequisites are for thinking, and the final question is what

When the question: What is called thinking? is reconsidered in Heidegger terms, it might better be
read as asking, What is it that invites or instructs or directs us into thinking? or in Heidegger s own
words, What is it that appeals to us to think? By asking this question, the thinker becomes the object
of the action, the one who is invited into thinking and the action is less about defining what thinking is
than in discovering how it is that the pathway into thinking is opened for us.
In Lecture II, Heidegger focuses his attention on the word thinking and what is considered thought
provoking. Thinking is a telling and speaking of language. Literature is often used as a medium for
both science and poetry and for that reason there is some confusion between what is actually thought
provoking. The three should be separated. There is science, there is thought, and there is poetry and
the difference between poetry and science is that poetic work is a work of our language much like
thinking is, although thinking does not make poetry. Thought and poesy are related because they never
just use language as a means of expression, they are the actual makers of language and the final
speech.

The ancient civilization of Sumer was advanced and sophisticated for its time. The knowledge and
innovation of the people of Sumer demonstrates to use in the modern day that the ancient world was
not as primitive as we once thought. Through examining the intricacies of Sumerian society, the
Sumerian city of Uruk, and the legacy the Sumer civilization had left behind. We can better appreciate
and understand Sumerians and their accomplishments. Ancient Sumer was a civilization that is
estimated to have formed around the year 4,500 BC. in the region most often referred too as
Mesopotamia. Around this time, nomadic headers in this region started to congregate around the two
major rivers in the area: the Trigs and Euphrates Rivers. The reason for this, being that the soil from
the nearby rivers were very fertile, making it great for farming, giving the area its other name, the
Fertile Crescent. The first settlers of what would become Sumer were not only to sustain themselves
through farming and agriculture, but have enough surplus to accommodate a large population. This in
turn led to the creation of large city states along the two rivers and the start of Sumerian society. Using
long irrigation canals and ditches were dug to maintain a reliable source of crops for these large cities.
These cities could have tens of thousands of residents dwelling within them. With such a large
population there was a need to communicate, and around the year 3,000 BC. or slightly earlier
Sumerians established their own form of writing.
This new written langue used wedges and dash marks that were pressed into clay tablets with a stylus.
This first style of writing was pictographic in nature, sharing very similarities to the early
hieroglyphics of ancient Egypt. Over a few centuries this style of writing evolved to phonograms, or
symbols relating to spoken words, and became what is known today as Cuneiform. We should think in
terms of writing as a gradual process, accomplished over a wide area rather than the result of a single
Sumerian genius. Sumerians used cuneiform to keep track of crops, livestock, trade, and even to write

Seventh Grade Probability Carnival
The seventh grade probability carnival was one of the highlights of my fall term. Throughout the
preparation, execution and reflection phases of the carnival, I truly enjoyed myself and felt as though I
learned a lot about both experimental the theoretical probability.
In total, 42 second grade students and teachers played my game during the probability carnival. Out of
those 42, five won two tickets, four won three tickets, six won four tickets, four won five tickets, five
won six tickets, three won seven tickets, four won eight tickets, and five won the jackpot amount,
which was nine tickets, as displayed in the table below:
Since my game cost only one ticket to play, and the lowest possible amount of tickets that you could
win was two, the probability of gaining tickets in my game was 100%, or 1/1. Since the numbers of
winners in each category of my game was not very spread out, neither were the experimental
probabilities. In total, the experimental probabilities of winning two, three, five and nine tickets were
all 5/42. The experimental probabilities of winning eight and five tickets were both 2/21, and the
experimental probabilities of winning seven and four tickets were 1/14 and 1/7. All in all, I had a very

Not only was this a fun, interactive way to connect with younger students, but it also taught me a lot
about probability, one of the most useful types of math. Throughout each step in the complicated
process of designing and running my carnival game, I was able to learn and grow as both a math
student and an artist. I think that the probability carnival has been one of the most memorable and

Posture and Tension
We should spend 10 or 15 minutes of every hour doing contrasting activities, which involve bending,
stretching, moving about and generally all those things which we are not doing in front of the screen.
2. Breathing and Blood Circulation
Practice taking a few deep breaths, often while working at your computer. Get up and move about
regularly, try to introduce some aerobic exercise into these breaks. Do whatever it takes to get the
