reasons behind the low level of reading literacy among primary school students. The data from IEA

Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) 2001 are analyzed. And the main
conclusions are drawn that the socioeconomic situation of the family has a great impact on students

3019 students of the 4th grade participated in PIRLS 2001 study in Latvia; they completed reading
literacy tests and surveys, their parents and teachers filled in the questionnaires. In order to compare
the data the authors of the paper portioned out 10% of all students with the highest results in reading
literacy (group A) and 10% of students with the lowest reading literacy achievements (group Z). If the
average result of students in Latvia was 545 points with standard deviation 62 points, the average
result of the group with the lowest achievements was 440 points but that of the students from the

above the average of the 5th graders, but the results of those of group Z would be below the average in

After they got married she quit really speaking to him because she had gotten sick and is dying. So

constantly visited and revisited again by Gabriel Garcia Marquez in his novel, with a tad of heavy
reliance on the cholera pandemic (as the title suggests not so subtly) and going so far as to intertwine
them into a single notion (more often than not) throughout. Such a combination (and comparison) is
most visible in Florentino, and helps shapes our emotions and thoughts about him as a character. Yet,
in seeing how the author allows these themes to interact as merely a vehicle to power his characters

In this instance, love, like cholera, produces an actual physical illness in Florentino which, at the same
time inflicts him mentally, eventually consuming him wholly, as we would learn through the course of
the novel. This illness can be read from his eating of gardenias and drinking of cologne so that he can
know Fermina s taste. This episode also sets the comparison of Florentino s love to that of flowers in
the Love in the Time of Cholera where his ingestion of these flowers could be seen as a symbolism of
him ingesting Fermina s affections, and one which render him violently ill, just like how this love
brings upon him both mental and physical anguish and suffering. Like the ravages of cholera which, at
the turn of the century, spelt certain death (with no cure known yet), love had been similarly portrayed
as such by Marquez in his novel. More importantly, the wrong diagnosis of cholera in this chapter
foreshadows the conclusion of the novel, as we would come to learn of later.
Reading the novel from henceforth, however, readers are introduced to a new angle of death and love
by Marquez. While it would be too simplistic to summarize the third chapter as just Florentino bidding
his time to declare his love for Fermina again, it also, once again, brings forth the notion of aging (as
first seen in Saint Amour s letter) and death, associated with love. Florentino, for much of this

Muslim hate crime in weeks following the events and were so profound that rates of anti Arab/Islamic
hate crime never returned to their pre 9/11 numbers. The media played a large role in the weeks
following 9/11 where Arab Americans and Muslims were demonized and profiled as disloyal, anti
American terrorists, perhaps contributing to the rise in incidents of these types of hate crimes. In the
following months, Arab and Muslim began to be used interchangeably and became synonymous with
terrorist and jihadist. Well over a decade later, these stereotypes remain and new incidents of tragedies
are often first assumed to be the work of Islamic terrorist groups. These stereotypes are damaging and
may be related to why anti Arab/Islamic hate crime have not returned to the rates before 9/11.

The Night in Question by Tobias Wolff and Should the Numbers Count by John Taurek are both
critical analyses that argue against the moral principles of utilitarianism. This theory is used to make
decisions by calculating the consequences of an action in terms of how much pain and pleasure it
causes the world. Wolff and Taurek both believe that this principle is too calculating, and does not take
into account the emotions of the decision maker. Both essays use examples that involve choosing
between killing one person you know and many people you don t know. Taurek uses the example of
having a pill that can save one person he knows, or five strangers. Wolff tells a narrative about a man

He believes that emotions and personal relationships play a huge role in the decision making process,
