HOW BIO-INSPIRED PLASTIC OUTPERFORMS TRADITIONAL
PLASTIC: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS
Presenter:
BUSHRA UMER
BS III, Biotechnology
Jinnah University for Women
1
Objectives of the study:
➔ To study the sustainable approaches to replace plastic.
➔ To understand the importance of biomimicry.
➔ To delve deeper into the charms of nanotechnology and
its potentials in developing eco-friendly materials.
➔ To understand the best ways to use biological resources
in cost effective manner.

Relevant terminologies:
Date 3
★ Can be obtained from plants or bacteria.
★ Have abundant hydroxyl and carboxyl groups on the
surface, making it an ideal biopolymer matrix.
★ Possesses high strength and heat resistivity.
CNF:
● Naturally occurring silicate mineral.
● It is coated with TiO2 nanograins to give the
biomimetic effect (as that of nacre) and beautiful color.
● TiO2-mica is pretreated by APTES (3-
aminopropyl)triethoxysilane to facilitate interfacial
interactions between TiO2-mica and CNF
4
➔ Simple method to assemble the
highly ordered brick-and-mortar
structure directly.
➔ The main reason behind the
formation of sustainable and
eco friendly biomimetic
compounds.
Ca+2 Crosslinking
➢ Defined as linking of polymer and mica by
means of covalent bonds by the help of
Calcium ions.
➢ This step aids in the toughness and stability
of bioinspired plastic replacement.

★ Plant (e.g, corn or sugarcane) based
cellulose nanofibers or CSF.
★ Bacteria-based bioplastics e.g,
Synechocystis and Synechococcus
species, model unicellular cyanobacteria,
can produce succinate and lactate, which
are commodity chemicals used to
generate bioplastics.
★ Agar
1. Composition:
❏ Certain metals and metalloids,
❏ Polycyclic aromatic
hydrocarbons (PAH) ,
❏ Polyethylene,
❏ Polypropylene (Contain
Phthalates).
7
Traditional plastics: Bio-inspired plastic:
Flexural strength (Before chemical
treatment) : Approx 83 MPa
(After treatment): 281 MPa
2. Mechanical property:
Flexural strength (The ability of the
material to resist bending without
breaking) : 175 Mpa
8
Traditional plastics: Bio-inspired plastic:
A. Structural changes on different temperature ranges:
(PMMA, ABS, PA and PC traditional plastics)
9
3. Thermal properties:
Your Footer Here 10
B. Thermal Conductivity: (Measure of how well a
material aids (conducts) or resists (insulates against) the
flow of heat).
11
Conclusion:
Plastics are threat to the environment. By developing eco
friendly approaches using advanced but cost effective
technologies, we can fight with this issue, and can promote
the idea of making plastic replacements along with the
degradation of plastics.
