Essay on Up And Away
Animation legend Walt Disney once said, Animation offers a medium of storytelling and visual
entertainment which can bring pleasure and information to people of all ages everywhere in the world.
This quote rings especially true with Disney Pixar s Up. Pete Docter, the director of Up, is able to use
multiple tactics to display human emotions throughout the film including music and silence, lighting
and colors, and 3 D filming. The efficacy of these tactics will be further analyzed to see if their use
yields value to the production as a whole. The melodious instrumentals that accompany Up have the
ability to plunge the audience deeper into the fantastic animated environment. The composer of the
soundtrack for Up, Michael Giacchino, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is perfectly exemplified by the second portion of the films interlude, in which a montage of Carl
and Ellie s married life is portrayed, supplemented by Giacchino s simple waltz. The waltz is
originally upbeat and whimsical as scenes of Carl and Ellie s cute married life flash by, including
picnics, homemaking, and clouds that inspire child birth. The tempo then slows and becomes
depressing as the couple goes through the pains of a miscarriage. Carl is able to cheer Ellie up by
renewing the prospect of adventure in their lives by bringing up Paradise Falls. The music once again
takes up an optimistic note as the couple saves their change in a glass jar labeled Paradise Falls . Due
to little accidents here and there the couple never really accumulates much money. After displaying
years of precious moments to an upbeat tone, the waltz slows a little, as Carl realizes age taking its
effects on Ellie. Right before Carl is able to take Ellie on the trip they ve always dreamed of, she is
stricken with illness and hospitalized. The music becomes tremendously slow and very moving as
Ellie dies, leaving Carl a widow. This five minute clip with the help of music elicits tears as efficiently
as if a cloud of mace had been released into the theater (Stevens). Many top critics feel that this scene
rivals with many other red carpet greats:
The absence of words suggests that Mr. Docter and the co director Bob Peterson, with whom he wrote

Gregor Mendel And Marie Curie Research Paper
Born into poverty, both Gregor Mendel and Marie Curie made it very far in the world of science,
earning many degrees. I learned many interesting facts about Gregor Mendel who is the father of
modern genetics and Marie Curie who discovered radioactivity used for x rays. Even though Mendel
and Curie made it very far in the world, I feel that Mendel s contributions had more of an impact on
science.
Born Johann Mendel, Gregor grew up in a family of small farmers who made financial sacrifices to
pay for his education. In 1843, Mendel s father expected him to take over the family farm, but Mendel
started studying to be a monk instead. Marie worked as a governess until she saved up enough money
at the age of 24, to buy a train ticket to Paris to begin her studies at Sorbonne. She made ends meet by
cleaning glassware in university labs. She also rationed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Darwin s book The Origin of Species talks about how species evolve by means of mutation and
natural selection. Another way that Mendel s theory on Genetics impacts society is our food. Genetics
is used to yield better crops and the reproduction of animals. Marie Curie identified both polonium
and radium in 1898 and describe the elements as radio active. Marie and her husband Pierre shared the
Noble Prize in physics with Becquerel in 1903. And in 1911, she received a second Nobel Prize, this
time in Chemistry.
In conclusion, Mendel and Curie both had a positive impact on the world of Allied Health. Mendel s
work with pea plants contributed to the Allied Health field by giving the fundamental laws of genetics.
Radioactivity that Curie helped discovered led to new therapeutic and diagnostic methods in medicine.
Mendel s experiments led to a greater understanding of genetics. As you can see, Mendel had a greater
impact on society because his laws about genetics affects our crops, our own human genetics and the
genetics of

Successful Find Sociology
For this class I chose the title, Working with Others for a Successful Find. In archeology there are
many steps a person must take in order to have a successful find. A successful find is not just when
you find an object in the dirt or ground, it is when you find an object and find new information about
the past. The only way to know about the past is to talk to someone who would know what that object
is. This can be a historian, fellow colleague, and especially a descendant of who the object belongs to.
An example in which I am referring to when I say a descendant of who the object belongs to, is like
when Janet D. Spector talks to Carrie Schommer and Chris Cavendar about the Dakota people. These
two individuals are descendants of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In these groups they would have to act out the part as if they were either Native Americans, the
archeologists, or the state/country officials. The last group would be the jury members and I would be
the judge. Once I assigned them to a specific group they would have a short time to discuss with one
another the argument that they would make. They would be arguing against one another that they
should have the objects that were found. First each group would give their opening argument. After
each group finished that then they would have an open floor in which they would be able to debate
each other. Once they were finished debating and each group made their closing remarks then the jury
would go and deliberate to determine who gets the objects. When the jury returns I would read aloud
the decision. The group who made the best argument will win a prize. Their prize will be all of the
artifacts that were found from the first assignment. This second assignment ties back in with the first
theme as well because it requires the students to work with one another in order to be successful and
win the debate. So overall my class would be all about the students working with one another to
achieve success as well as trying to determine who would receive the artifacts that are found in Native
American lands. At the end of my class

Essay on Kristen s Cookies
Operations Management
Fall 2013
Kristen s Cookie Company September 26, 2013
Kristen and her roommate are preparing to launch Kristen s Cookie Company in their on campus
apartment. The company will provide fresh cookies to hungry students late at night. Evaluation of the
preliminary design for the company s production process will be required in order to make key policy
decisions, including what prices to charge, what equipment to order and how many orders to accept,
and to determine whether the business can be profitable.
i) Identify the items, resources, and the tasks. Draw a process flow diagram for this process.
Items:
Cookie Ingredients
Cookie Dough
Baked Cookies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This would introduce inefficiency into the process and most likely impact receipt of future orders.
v) We need to consider business strategy: will the process capacity be higher if Kristen offers only non
customized cookies of one type? What are the advantages and disadvantages of this alternative
strategy compared to what Kristen now plans?
The process capacity will not change in the short term if Kristen offers only non customized cookies.
The case study makes it clear that the process that Kristen follows requires specific amounts of time to
be spent at each step. However, in the long term, Kristen s capacity will increase as she becomes more
adept at making the one type of cookie she has elected to make. This will reduce the time required at
some of the process steps (but not necessarily all) and ultimately increase the output capacity her and
her roommate are able to achieve.
Pros of non customized cookies:
Time spent shopping will be reduced, as will overall variability in price of ingredients.
Kristen and her roommate will become more efficient due to standardization
They will become much better at making one type of cookie rather than many; total flow time will

Similarities Between Gary Goss Pleasantville And Blue Velvet
While suburbia is not quite a city to be registered as a cinematic city, it has its own specific way of life
just any city does. The speciality of suburbia though, is that it can be branded, sold and recreated in
most places in America. It is the complete full circle of the American Dream, or better yet it is the
trademarked edition. The 1950 s are thought of as the peak, or stereotypical best, the American Dream
with the white picket fence, 2.5 kids, and a hot meal waiting for you when you get home. While this
idea may be postcard or billboard perfect, it is not as perfect for everyone involved or for the future
when it looked at from under the service. Gary Ross Pleasantville and David Lynch s Blue Velvet both
explore the idea of the suburban American Dream and that it is not as squeaky clean perfection as it
seems.
Gary Ross Pleasantville is the story of two modern day children being magically zapped into a TV
Land esque show, called Pleasantville, about stereotypical perfect 1950 s life in the suburbs.
Pleasantville is a town that is a vision of America in its commercial best, with its two parent
households, church on Sunday and white pearly teeth. It is a town that ... Show more content on

being the American Dream. Jeffrey has changed along with our perception of suburbia, because dirt
sticks. The viewers of this film get thrown into becoming voyeurs along with Jeffrey. So when the big
question of whether not Jeffrey is a deceptive or pervert comes up, it is not only directed at him but at
the viewers for watching and being invested in such horror along with

Autistic Spectrum Disorder
Autistic spectrum disorder, otherwise known as autism, is a complex disorder of the central nervous
system and a developmental disability that comes from a neurological disorder that affects the normal
functioning of the brain. (Dowshen, 2008). It is not something one can catch or pass along to someone
else. It makes interacting with other people incredibly difficult. Autism was first identified in 1943 by
Dr. Leo Kanner of Johns Hopkins Hospital. Autism spectrum disorder can usually be reliably
diagnosed by age 3, however new research is pushing back the age of diagnosis to as early as six
months. Autism is a developmental disorder that makes it very difficult for one to communicate with
others and live a normal life. (What is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A very good amount of autistic children have very bad tempers. As a result, numerous parents end up
quitting their jobs to care for their autistic child. (Packard, 2009). Many people with autism also have
other disorders of the central nervous system, such as developmental disabilities, epilepsy, or
schizophrenia. However, not all children with autism are severely impacted. Autism persists through a
person s lifetime, although many people are able to learn to control and modify their behavior to some
extent. Some people are affected fairly mildly; several of these individuals learn to live independent
lives. Others more severely affected, require lifelong care and supervision. (Dowshen, 2008). Most
families of autistic children also learn to get support from their parents and other children with autism.
Some children with mild autism will grow up and be able to live on their own. Those with problems
that are more serious will always need some kind of help, but all kids with autism have brighter
futures when they have support and understanding from their doctors, teachers, caregivers, parents,
brothers, sisters, and friends. (Dowshen, 2008). At this point in time there is no cure for autism, but
doctors, therapists, and special teachers can help kids with autism overcome or adjust to many
difficulties they have to face. The earlier a child starts treatment for autism, the better because the best
results are

It was a peaceful village as heaven. Although it was a small village it was very famous. It was famous
because this village owns a golden football. This golden football was from the goblins. 100years ago
the goblins came to attack the village and one of the Goblin dropped the golden football. The Goblins
wanted the golden football back but the head master of the village Joel Murton refuses this request.
The Goblins was planning to attack Joel again to get the golden football back. The goblins send spies
to detect Joel s defending weakness. The goblins found out that Joel s weakness was that they are not
defending the town hall. So the goblins made plan to attack the town hall first and distract the army

Taking a Look at the Golden Ratio
Golden Ratio is found by dividing a line into two parts so that the longer part divided by the smaller
part equals the whole length divided by the longer part. Golden ratio is very similar to pi because it is
an infinite number and it goes on forever. It is usually rounded to around 1.618. The formula for
golden ratio is a/b = (a+b)/b. It has been around for a long time so it is not known who made up the
golden ratio. Since the golden ratio is used all around the world it is known in many names such as the
golden mean, phi, the divine proportion, extreme and mean proportion, etc. Golden ratio was used in
arts from the beginning of people and still is used today. It has been used in architecture, math,
sculptures and nature. Euclid talks about it in his book elements. Golden ratio is also used in Fibonacci
numbers and Lucas numbers. Golden ratio also comes in the form of a rectangle. Golden has been
found in many places over and over, so it s not clear where the golden ratio originated or who found
the golden ratio but some say that the Pythagoreans were the first to bring up the idea of the golden
ratio. Due to the discovery in many places, it gets many names. Euclid wrote about the golden ratio in
his book, The Elements. The Element is a book about geometry. In Euclid s book, he describes the
golden ratio as the extreme and mean ratio. He says the line is divided into mean and ratio by point c.
It also explains what a golden ratio is even though he did not call it golden

leader bc he killed many people. As it says on the key of the map on the document The Battle of

it says Furthermore there was no more imposing power in his Empire. I believe that maybe if a

ruler because he threatened to kill the kallinga. In Rock Edict thirteen it says ...But he warns them that

Comfort Care Research Paper
Comfort care is an essential part of medical care at the end of life. It is care that helps or soothes a
family member who is dying. The goal is to prevent or relieve suffering as much as possible while
respecting the passing person s wishes ( End of Life: Helping With Comfort and Care , 2012). There
are several opinions when it comes to comfort care both negative and positive. It often can cause
tension between family members when it comes time to make end of life care decisions. Aggressive
intensive care overtime cost more than comfort care and they both end in the same way, with the lost
of a loved one. Suffering is brought to an end and loved ones are no longer suffering and often a
burden is lifted.
As opposed to aggressive intensive care, which costs more, can cause more unnecessary pain and
discomfort to the dying patient; comfort care, or end of life care is a better option for the patient and
families because, it is cheaper, more comfortable for the patients and false hope is not ... Show more

Some people believe that it is assisted suicide, its not. Comfort care does not mean that hospital staff
just gives up on the patient. Comfort care is used as a last resort. Comfort care is only used when
doctors and nurses have exhausted all available options and the future outcomes are not positive.
Comfort care is just the opposite; it does not offer false hope to the family members. In most cases
Comfort care is not a negative thing like naysayers believe. Everyone has probably heard of Dr.

Essay On Curling
The sport of curling is steeped in tradition yet on that note it is still changing. Not surprisingly, Canada
has had a great year winning both the men s world championship and the women s world
championship. Canada has always been a force to reckon with and this year was no exception.
They have been very strong all year long with a couple of world class teams in Glen Howard and
Kevin Martin. Kevin played a bit more consistently to earn the right to defend the world title for
Canada this year.
Maybe some news that may be a bit more surprising is the success of China. Both men and women
from China gave what is likely their best ever performances for China in the world championships.
They are showing that the rest of the world must sit up and take notice.

The Canadian team skipped by Kevin Martin however, could easily be labelled the perfect curling
team. They simply do not show a weak position. Every man on the team is doing exactly what is asked
of him through the play. What appears very interesting is the relationship between the 3 young men
and the old guy they call The Old Bear. They work extremely well together and have learned to work
with that Old Bear extremely well.
There exists a level of communication between the boys and the old guy that almost seems like father

M Night Symbolism
In M. Night Shyamalan s movie The Sixth Sense symbolism and foreshadowing is used throughout.
The use of the color red is the most obvious form of symbolism. The color red is used to show
important moments, presence of spirits, paranormal events, etc. in the movie.
Red is used to highlight the most important moments in the movie or just items of interest that the
viewer should take note of. From the first scene of the movie you can start to notice the red
symbolism. Malcolm and his wife are discussing his awards and it s shown to be invaded inside of a
red frame. Another example of symbolism is towards the beginning of the movie when Cole is at the
birthday party and he follows the red balloon upstairs where he has an encounter with a paranormal ...

This part of the film was somewhat confusing to me. I thought maybe he didn t like talking to anyone
besides his patients. I thought Cole was his patient so he only talked to him. After seeing the scene
where Malcolm and Cole s mother were sitting together waiting for Cole to come home I thought that
maybe he was having a conversation with her but towards the end of the movie it was clarified that
Malcolm was never talking to her or interacting with her. I noticed that Cole refused to interact with
Malcolm in that scene but would ve never done so if they were alone. Another part of the movie that
was somewhat confusing to me was if those kids from school were hitting Cole or if it was his mother.
I initially thought that it was the kids but after seeing how Cole s mother was so impatient with him I
thought it maybe could ve been her. Again, the ending of the movie where Cole finally revealed his
secret to his mother clarified the whole thing. He explained to her that the ghosts would do that to him.
I believe some parts of the movie were meant to confuse the viewer to have them thinking something
completely opposite of the truth. The people who were behind the movie really paid attention to the
detailing and really ended up explaining everything at the end of the

Mutual victimization is when two or people are involved in a crime then all of certain the crime goes

to occur? For example the first robber get angry at the other two because they did not divide the

Critical Chain By Dr. Eliyahu Goldratt
Summary of Critical Chain novel
Critical Chain is a novel that wrote by Dr. Eliyahu Goldratt. In the Novel, he used novel mode to
describe that how to use Critical Chain Theory to fix manage problem. Specially, he used common
sense and logical deduction to give us a clearly description about the complex manage problems. This

the book, Dr. Goldratt talks about how a professor trying to attain his tenure at a university s business

and how to apply the Theory of Constraints to project management. This novel has many surprises for
me that give me a lot of opinion about project management and I got many points to think about what
I need to be.
In the book, the author talked about the reasons which cause the project schedule delay. The author
used a problem called students syndrome which happens in the students, and also I think it s normal
happening in employee community. In students life, there is a phenomenon happens a lot. When the
professors assign homework, such as if a homework could be finished in one week, but most of times
the students will ask for two weeks to finish which mean that the students like to have longer time to
make sure they have enough times. In this case, if the professor agrees the request to make the due

there are almost thirty amazing examples of aphorisms in Tuesdays with Morrie . Such as, Love
always wins. (pg. 40), The most important thing in life is to learn how to give out love, and to let it
come in. (p. 52), another one includes, Love is the only rational act. (p. 52). Morrie s aphorisms
mainly speak of love, and how you should treat others. It is a lesson that makes readers think of their
values and their ethics. It also makes you question your morals and how you treat one another. In the
Last Lecture , Randy Pausch also used many aphorisms, although not as much as Tuesdays with
Morrie , due to the fact our class only read an

John Brown s Insanity
John Brown was an African American slave abolitionist who caused much conflict with his radical
views to overthrow slavery. One of his many defeats where he tried to defeat slavery with violence
was the armed slave rebellion on Harper s Ferry. In a speech to the court before his sentencing, Brown
stated his actions to be just and God sanctioned. Brown lived a life full of dispute; yet it was not until
after Harper Ferry where his madness was confirmed. Brown soon became a hero in the eyes of
Northern extremists and was quick to capitalize on his growing reputation. Brown s radical
abolitionist movements and wicked violent actions on slavery promoted his reputation in the north and
were the cherry on the sundae to validate his insanity. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His views on cruelly ending slaving with violence and bloodshed only prove is madness. Several of
his colleagues also petitioned that the courts should look at Brown s questionable mental state when it
came to his actions. With all the violence John Brown tried to create with his radical actions to end
slavery, his actions did very little to end slavery. On the contrary, slave owners in the south treated
slaves more barbaric because they started to feel threatened as his actions. Many thought his rebellion
was going to succeed so many treated the slaves as the target. Many believe that his actions help stir
up the civil war. In conclusion, John Brown tried to terminate slavery in savage ways many times and

Rescue Services Argument
The Argument of Rescue Services
Many people have had a an issue of safety on rescue services. Some say they are risking their lives
while others say that they are not. There have been many articles on the subject about rescuers that
died and climbers that had a false sense of hope. Some articles say that the climbers are safe and that
there is nothing dangerous about mountain climbing. But what is right is that people do have the right
to rescue services when they put themselves at risk because all humans have a right to rescue services.
The first reason people do have the right to rescue services when they put themselves at risk is that it
is their choice. In source 1 it said ...a technique developed in Switzerland. suggests that the new
technique can save more lives. As stated in line 65 69, ...there attaching a long line...and there putting

Essay on Environmental Ethics
Ethics is the study of what is right and wrong in human conduct. Environmental ethics studies the
effects of human s moral relationships on the environment and everything within it (Stanford
Encyclopedia of Philosophy, 2008). The ethical principles that govern those relations determine
human duties, obligations, and responsibilities with regard to the Earth s natural environment and all
of the animals and plants that inhabit it (Taylor, 1989). The purpose of this paper is to reveal
environmental issues that are threatening the existence of life on Earth, and discus our social
obligations to refrain from further damaging our environment, health and life for future generations. I
will discus the need for appropriate actions and the ethical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These perspectives are anthropocentric or human centered and view all non human life as less
important than humans themselves. Environmental ethics challenges these beliefs by questioning the
assumed moral superiority of human beings to members of other species on earth (SEP, 2008).
Preservation of the environment is essential to the preservation of the human race. Global Warming is
the number one concern threatening the very existence of humans and everything within the
environment today. The human race is to blame for the destruction of the natural world. The
environmental issues that are threatening all human and non human life today, started in the industrial
revolution and the discovery of oil The need to improve the quality of life resulted in the construction
of factories to mass produce products for consumers. These factories were powered by fossil fuels
such as coal, oil and gas. The combustion of these fossil fuels emitted great quantities of pollutants
that remain in the Earths atmosphere to this day and is the number one cause of global warming.
However, in ethics one cannot evaluate just one thing. In ethics, as in nature, everything is connected
to everything else (Partridge, 1998). Deforestation for agricultural purposes and the expansion of
human habitats is happening around the world. This

It can lead to better representation. Each region is properly represented with designation of distinct

specific structure of the Senate known as the Federal Second Chamber in a federal system of

Regrettably, although each local government unit in the Philippines is given funds, they are not
distributed equally. This is so because many factors are considered in appropriating the funds. The
population, the land area, the income capacity and other factors that prevent a small municipality or
city from developing are considered in the budget appropriation. It assures local development. Since
federalism allowed a shared power between national and provincial governments, allowing provincial
leaders will let them focus on developing their own territories. They will have the opportunity to
decide and be given the budget to improve their local community. The rights of the States or Provinces
are expressed and thus, have more local autonomy to develop. Other than this, the income of a
province can be used in its own alone without passing through the national level wherein it may be
restricted for some purposes. It facilitates fast government services. This is because there are two
orders of government, Federal and regional, each in direct contact with its citizens. It is not necessary
anymore to travel in distance just to avail of government services. With the federal system,

The Energy Stored In Various Foods Using a Homemade Calorimeter
Naomi Hernandez
Little Rock Central High The Energy Stored in Various Foods Using a Homemade Calorimeter The
purpose of this experiment is to investigate how the caloric energy in food varies in different foods
and the correlation between high fat foods and calories using a homemade calorimeter. The hypothesis
is that if foods with higher fat content have more energy than nonfat food, then fatty foods with more
caloric energy will have higher measurements on the calorimeter, because fatty foods have calories
than other foods. As the content of fat in food rises the energy stored in that food will be greater than
nonfat foods. A calorie is a unit of energy though it does ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With an excess of calories, an individual could become overweight or obese, because the calories not
used for used for basic functions are converted into fat for later usage. If the individual does not
participate in physical activity, the remaining fat will not be burned off, leading to excess of fat
(Abdallah, et al. n.d.). Too many empty calories, or calories with no nutritional value, increase the
chances of obesity and other weight related issues. These calories derive form added sugar and solid
fats (Weight Management, .n.d.) Solid fats refer to fats that are solid at room temperature such as:
butter, milk fat, beef fat (tallow, suet), chicken fat, cream, pork fat (lard), stick margarine, shortening,
hydrogenated oils, coconut oil, palm and palm kernel oils . Although some are named oils, it is
because they derive from plants, they are considered solid fats because of the high concentration in
saturated and fatty acids(Calories. n.d.). Fats are concentrated sources of calories , and foods with
added sugars or eaten in large portions can account to an excess in calories and lead to weight gain
(How Do I, .n.d.). So foods with greater empty calories that tend to have solid fats lead excess in fat.
For the purpose or this experiment foods that either are or have

Three Characters Who Have Influenced Katniss Essay

Three characters who have influenced Katniss Everyone in society must have been influenced by
others around him. Think about it; a person can always find several people who have influenced him
deeply in his life, such as his parents and teachers. More specifically, the person can be directly
influenced by their words and actions; he can also be unconsciously influenced by their minds and
moods. However, these influences can be positive or negative for a man. Katniss, the protagonist in
The Hunger Games, has been influenced in both positive and negative ways by three characters: Gale,
Cinna and Cato. Gale teaches Katniss hunting skills like a big brother and promises to take care of

so concerned about her family, especially about her younger sister Prim. With Gale s strong guarantee,
Katniss can give herself completely to the Games. Gale has influenced Katniss positively by teaching
her hunting skills and providing a reassuring guarantee. Cinna, as Katniss s stylist throughout the
Games, has turned Katniss to a stunner in the opening ceremonies to help her attract sponsors, as well
as prepare for the interview. The fire costume is so dazzling that it has caused a sensation in the
opening ceremonies. When Katniss and Peeta ride out in a chariot down the street, the people of the
Capitol are going nuts, showering [them] with flowers, shouting [their] names, [their] first names...
Cinna has given [Katniss] a great advantage. No one will forget [Katniss]. Not [her] look, not [her]
name (Collins 70). The perfect debut of Katniss helps her get a lot of rich sponsors who can provide
her with valuable support during the Games. Different from Haymitch s arbitrary requirement to the
presentation, Cinna s suggestion is so suitable and reasonable for Katniss that she can show her best
aspects to the audience. As Katniss follows Cinna s strategy to be herself in the presentation, the

Mrs. Dalloway Paper
Mrs. Dalloway Paper
Mrs. Dalloway, by Virginia Woolf, was written in 1925, a time filled with many large changes to
civilization. The book was written and set right after the biggest war human kind can remember which
killed millions of people, during the peak of industrialization which caused the mass production of
items and created thousands of new inventions, while modernist arts and thoughts were growing and,
and when national pride was very large for the citizens of the Allied countries in World War I. Virginia
Woolf draws on many aspects of these changes in Mrs. Dalloway, especially on the idea of modernism
which can be defined as new thought, art, and culture. Specifically Woolf focuses on how the new

This face which so many people believe to be of a famous and important person, causes the citizens
who see it to feel pride for England and its achievements, and to generally feel nationalistic. Another
example in the novel where a modern object causes multiple characters to become emotional is when
Big Ben chimes, here Clarissa is thinking about the effects of the ringing bells, a particular hush, or
solemnity; an indescribably pause; a suspense (4). This shows that another piece of machinery was
capable of evoking emotion from the characters in the book.
Woolf also shows how much more significant nature is in the world of Mrs. Dalloway through all of
the metaphors she uses comparing people to animals and how her characters often think about nature.
In the journal entry, Scissors and Silks, Flowers and Trees, and Geraniums Ruined by the War :
Virginia Woolf s Ecological Critique of Science in Mrs. Dalloway written by Justyna Kostkowska,
Kostkowska argues that, By referring to human experience in natural terms, [Woolf] reinforces the
inseparability of nature and culture, and shows their mutuality (187). This argument becomes more
apparent throughout the book when Woolf compares almost every character to something in nature as
Kostkowska touches on later in her article, An overwhelming

Andrew Carnegie rose from a bobbin boy in a textile factory to become one of the richest men in

However, this is inaccurate because he had treated his workers like they were nothing, even putting

Yes, the men call this the deathtrap he repeated my guide; ... they wipe a man out here every little
while.... Sometimes a chain breaks, and a ladle tip over; and the iron explodes like that.... Sometimes
the slag falls on the workmen from the roadway up there (Page 357). He fools other people with his
donations making it seem like he is captain of industry when in reality he also put people in dangerous
conditions and pay them not enough for it. He doesn t help his workers enough with the wages and
dangerous conditions. His workers not being the only evidence of him not being a captain of industry.
A man watches out, why, all right! But you take it after they ve been on duty for twelve hours without
sleep, and running like hell, everybody tired and logy and it s a different story (Page 357). Andrew
Carnegie was someone who put his workers in the kind of danger that any day one of the workers can

Adrienne Rich s Of Woman Born – The End of Motherhood Essay
Of Woman Born The End of Motherhood
In Of Woman Born, Adrienne Rich effectively weaves her own story into a convincing account of
what it means to become a mother within the bonds of patriarchal culture. Her conclusion that the
institution of motherhood, which she distinguishes from motherhood, must be destroyed in order to
release the creation and sustenance of life into the same realm of decision, struggle, surprise,
imagination, and conscious intelligence, as any other difficult, but freely chosen work is substantiated
by her courageous confession that contradicts culturally normative notions of motherhood.

because [she] felt [her] own needs acutely and often expressed them violently (32) by raging at her
children out of frustration, provides a credible offering to break down an institution that makes women
like her angry. It also demonstrates some of the ways in which motherhood has not been women s
choice.
A reader might be stunned to consider that was written just twenty years ago and that Rich s first
pregnancy happened only forty three years ago, since her choices as an educated woman were so
limited compared to now. When her account of feeling like she was only acting as a woman (having
no idea what she wanted, and having a child because it was expected of a real woman ) is introduced,
her lack of choices reads like either a dismal Margaret Atwood science fiction novel or a scene from
the very long ago past. Similary, when Rich cites her example of a primitive attitude by quoting a
doctor s medical opinion that women are psychologically unbalanced when they attempt to resist the
demands of the institution [of motherhood], (263) it is quite surprising to realize that this opinion was
written in 1967, a mere thirty years ago. In this way, Rich s story is a tribute to all women who have
fought her battle, the battle to have the freedom to choose motherhood.
Rich must feel a deep sense of satisfaction in realizing that articulating her struggles has helped many
women. Her capacity to transcend her own circumstances is truly remarkable

Fritz Lang s Dr. Mabuse The Gambler
Fritz Lang s Dr. Mabuse the Gambler is a film about a man who is many things, or at least appears to

As the subtitle The Great Gambler: A Picture of the Time suggests, the first part of Dr. Mabuse

critiquing it. The Time being referred to, in this particular case, is the Weimar Republic era of

Price Elasticity Of Demand And Demand
Price elasticity of demand is the relation of the virtual change in quantity demanded to the virtual
difference in price. Mathematically, price elasticity of demand is only the percent change in capacity
divided by the percent change in cost. In this essay the following issues will be discussed and
examples will be given. To begin with Price Elasticity of Demand will be explained provided with
illustrations. Furthermore the measurements of PED, the determinants, the five ranges, which will be,
mentioned later at last the relationship between price elasticity of demand with consumer expenditure.
Demand elasticity means how perceptive the demand for a good is to fluctuations in other economic
variables. Demand elasticity is essential as it supports firms model the possible transformation in
demand due to changes in value of the good, the result of changes in prices of further goods and
numerous other market factors. A firm grasp of demand elasticity benefits to direct firms regarding
more ideal competitive performance. Demand elasticity is a measure of how great the capacity
demanded will be different if additional factor changes. An example is the price elasticity of demand;
this measures how the quantity demanded fluctuates with price. This is fundamental for setting prices
so as to maximizing profit.
The price elasticity of demand is found by dividing a specific change in capacity by the change in
price, which produced it. The changes are constantly balanced, or

The Role Of Advertising In The 1920 s
During the 1920 s, advertisement has changed in many aspects of American culture. Although the
concept of advertising has existed in the United States since the establishment of the thirteen colonies,
the American advertisement became what it is today as in a result of the 1920 s. During that time,
most of propaganda techniques, that were used in modern times, were officially established and
perfected. However, advertisers find great accomplishments with the different techniques such as
psychology of advertisement, brand consciousness, therapeutic ethic, and even the use of women
image use on consumers that will master mind the advertisement culture.
The two ads have a very different interesting factor of using women to sell their product by creating a
psychological aspect to costumers so it will enhance their product of getting sold. Before
advertisement became to effect tremendously in the American culture in 1920 s, Americans were
going through ambivalence when they were categorized in functional groups such as the old middle
class and the new middle class. The old middle class believed that hard work is good for the body and
mind because Americans were working longer hours for less money compared to the new middle class
that have great opportunities to work new jobs and have satisfaction doing the job while being paid

Workplace As Part Of Continuous Improvement
Many companies have chosen to follow the route towards a 5S workplace as part of continuous
improvement. This type of system allows a company to dispose and remove unnecessary items
properly, prevent the accumulation of these items, and help decipher if these are costs that need to be
rid of. Costs tend to pile up on businesses and companies in the form of wastes and defects. Some
situations that are an example of this are utilization suffering because item changeovers take too long,
product is rushed in because an important part cannot be found, and output not meeting its full
potential because of crew to crew variations (Bresko 2014). Many companies attempt to advance
through Six Sigma, Lean, or other initiatives. However, some studies have been reported that two
thirds of other initiatives fail to meet the expectations of the organization leaders (Ghodrati and
Zulkifli 2013). Learning about the certain methods of the different systems is not the issue when
putting these into play, but putting them into their daily organizational actions is. Some of these
situations where they fail to put these into play is process improvement, continuous improvement, and
the procedures of the initiatives not being long standing. The process of 5S is a great way to add to

Analysis Of Lucretius The Mind And The Spirit Will Die
Is death truly bad for the one who dies? Fred Feldman argues that it is bad for the person who dies
because it deprives the person of good things that would have happened if he or she had lived. This
argument takes more of a what if? standpoint, and is weak. A stronger belief, held by Lucretius in his
essay The Mind and the Spirit Will Die , is that death is not bad for the one who is dead because the
spirit is composed of matter incapable of surviving without the body, and therefore, when one dies
they can no longer suffer. Therefore, young John Doe s death of being run over by a trolley and dying
is not bad for him.

Lucretius considers the situation of when the body is infected by illness to provide an example that
proves this. When the body is infected by a contagion, the mind is often affected as well. For example,
the mind can speak foolishly, or distractedly, and one can doze off due to drowsiness, where they are
not yet awake or asleep and not hear voices or recognize faces around them, or in a coma, shut off and
not be alive or dead. Because the mind is obviously invaded by the disease, it must be destructible.
Therefore, if the mind is destructible, and can be affected to violent illnesses, it is hard to believe that
it can survive in open air without a body to protect it. Lucretius also considers an objection to this
claim, and suggest a world in which the spirit or mind is immortal. If the body has five senses, the
mind must as well. However, a spirit, departed from the body, cannot have bodily parts like eyes, a
nose, a hand, etc. and without these it cannot perceive the senses or be sentient or exist. In addition, he
questioned, that if the spirit is a immortal and slipped into the body at birth, why does it not have any
memory of its earlier existence? If it has no memory of its previous existence, then it must be a new
creation and be able to be born, like the body, and previous spirits must die and die with the body.
Furthermore, if the spirit existed before the body, it would contradict the fact that the mind and body
are one in the same and grow together if the spirit had a prior existence. Overall, the spirit must die
with the body, as it cannot live without it and it wouldn t make sense if it were an entity within itself.
So, young John Doe s mind, could not exist after he is run over by the

Up until recently, parents had been the intended target audience for advertising efforts aimed for
children of young age groups. However it is now the children who have become the main focus. The
growth in advertising channels reaching children and the privatisation of children s media use have

Simple correlation research in the US indicates that children typically aged 2 6 years who view more
television advertising request more products from their parents. This is known as pester power. It has
been found that parents are more likely to buy products when kids ask for them in the shop (nag
factor). As children age, they develop the cognitive capacity to contextualise and act critically on the
observations made, reducing the amount of requests for products (Australian Communications and
Media Authority, 2007). Children who are exposed to TV commercials for toys not only develop the
initial idea for the toy but repeatedly pester their parents to buy it. This is exploitation on the parents
behalf as it often causes parent child conflict when the parents deny their children the product (Wilcox
et al. 2004).
Another troubling issue relating to child advertising exploitation is in reference to food ads. Half of
the advertisements in the UK directed at children concern food. There are little ads emphasising
healthy eating and since the start of television advertising, the largest proportion of ads aimed at
children has always been unhealthy food products (Gunter, Oates amp; Blades 2005). The Australian
Communications and Media Authority (2007) detailed the

  • 2. Essay on Up And Away Animation legend Walt Disney once said, Animation offers a medium of storytelling and visual entertainment which can bring pleasure and information to people of all ages everywhere in the world. This quote rings especially true with Disney Pixar s Up. Pete Docter, the director of Up, is able to use multiple tactics to display human emotions throughout the film including music and silence, lighting and colors, and 3 D filming. The efficacy of these tactics will be further analyzed to see if their use yields value to the production as a whole. The melodious instrumentals that accompany Up have the ability to plunge the audience deeper into the fantastic animated environment. The composer of the soundtrack for Up, Michael Giacchino, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is perfectly exemplified by the second portion of the films interlude, in which a montage of Carl and Ellie s married life is portrayed, supplemented by Giacchino s simple waltz. The waltz is originally upbeat and whimsical as scenes of Carl and Ellie s cute married life flash by, including picnics, homemaking, and clouds that inspire child birth. The tempo then slows and becomes depressing as the couple goes through the pains of a miscarriage. Carl is able to cheer Ellie up by renewing the prospect of adventure in their lives by bringing up Paradise Falls. The music once again takes up an optimistic note as the couple saves their change in a glass jar labeled Paradise Falls . Due to little accidents here and there the couple never really accumulates much money. After displaying years of precious moments to an upbeat tone, the waltz slows a little, as Carl realizes age taking its effects on Ellie. Right before Carl is able to take Ellie on the trip they ve always dreamed of, she is stricken with illness and hospitalized. The music becomes tremendously slow and very moving as Ellie dies, leaving Carl a widow. This five minute clip with the help of music elicits tears as efficiently as if a cloud of mace had been released into the theater (Stevens). Many top critics feel that this scene rivals with many other red carpet greats: The absence of words suggests that Mr. Docter and the co director Bob Peterson, with whom he wrote the ... • 3. Gregor Mendel And Marie Curie Research Paper Born into poverty, both Gregor Mendel and Marie Curie made it very far in the world of science, earning many degrees. I learned many interesting facts about Gregor Mendel who is the father of modern genetics and Marie Curie who discovered radioactivity used for x rays. Even though Mendel and Curie made it very far in the world, I feel that Mendel s contributions had more of an impact on science. Born Johann Mendel, Gregor grew up in a family of small farmers who made financial sacrifices to pay for his education. In 1843, Mendel s father expected him to take over the family farm, but Mendel started studying to be a monk instead. Marie and her husband Pierre shared the Noble Prize in physics with Becquerel in 1903. And in 1911, she received a second Nobel Prize, this time in Chemistry. In conclusion, Mendel and Curie both had a positive impact on the world of Allied Health. Mendel s work with pea plants contributed to the Allied Health field by giving the fundamental laws of genetics. Radioactivity that Curie helped discovered led to new therapeutic and diagnostic methods in medicine. Mendel s experiments led to a greater understanding of genetics. • 4. Successful Find Sociology For this class I chose the title, Working with Others for a Successful Find. In archeology there are many steps a person must take in order to have a successful find. A successful find is not just when you find an object in the dirt or ground, it is when you find an object and find new information about the past. The only way to know about the past is to talk to someone who would know what that object is. This can be a historian, fellow colleague, and especially a descendant of who the object belongs to. An example in which I am referring to when I say a descendant of who the object belongs to, is like when Janet D. Spector talks to Carrie Schommer and Chris Cavendar about the Dakota people. The last group would be the jury members and I would be the judge. Once I assigned them to a specific group they would have a short time to discuss with one another the argument that they would make. They would be arguing against one another that they should have the objects that were found. First each group would give their opening argument. After each group finished that then they would have an open floor in which they would be able to debate each other. Once they were finished debating and each group made their closing remarks then the jury would go and deliberate to determine who gets the objects. When the jury returns I would read aloud the decision. The group who made the best argument will win a prize. Their prize will be all of the artifacts that were found from the first assignment. This second assignment ties back in with the first theme as well because it requires the students to work with one another in order to be successful and win the debate. So overall my class would be all about the students working with one another to achieve success as well as trying to determine who would receive the artifacts that are found in Native American lands. • 6. Similarities Between Gary Goss Pleasantville And Blue Velvet While suburbia is not quite a city to be registered as a cinematic city, it has its own specific way of life just any city does. The speciality of suburbia though, is that it can be branded, sold and recreated in most places in America. It is the complete full circle of the American Dream, or better yet it is the trademarked edition. The 1950 s are thought of as the peak, or stereotypical best, the American Dream with the white picket fence, 2.5 kids, and a hot meal waiting for you when you get home. While this idea may be postcard or billboard perfect, it is not as perfect for everyone involved or for the future when it looked at from under the service. Gary Ross Pleasantville and David Lynch s Blue Velvet both explore the idea of the suburban American Dream and that it is not as squeaky clean perfection as it seems. Gary Ross Pleasantville is the story of two modern day children being magically zapped into a TV Land esque show, called Pleasantville, about stereotypical perfect 1950 s life in the suburbs. Golden ratio is very similar to pi because it is an infinite number and it goes on forever. It is usually rounded to around 1.618. The formula for golden ratio is a/b = (a+b)/b. It has been around for a long time so it is not known who made up the golden ratio. Since the golden ratio is used all around the world it is known in many names such as the golden mean, phi, the divine proportion, extreme and mean proportion, etc. Golden ratio was used in arts from the beginning of people and still is used today. The environmental issues that are threatening all human and non human life today, started in the industrial revolution and the discovery of oil The need to improve the quality of life resulted in the construction of factories to mass produce products for consumers. These factories were powered by fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas. The combustion of these fossil fuels emitted great quantities of pollutants that remain in the Earths atmosphere to this day and is the number one cause of global warming. However, in ethics one cannot evaluate just one thing. In ethics, as in nature, everything is connected to everything else (Partridge, 1998). Too many empty calories, or calories with no nutritional value, increase the chances of obesity and other weight related issues. Solid fats refer to fats that are solid at room temperature such as: butter, milk fat, beef fat (tallow, suet), chicken fat, cream, pork fat (lard), stick margarine, shortening, hydrogenated oils, coconut oil, palm and palm kernel oils . Although some are named oils, it is because they derive from plants, they are considered solid fats because of the high concentration in saturated and fatty acids(Calories. n.d.). This shows that another piece of machinery was capable of evoking emotion from the characters in the book. Woolf also shows how much more significant nature is in the world of Mrs. Dalloway through all of the metaphors she uses comparing people to animals and how her characters often think about nature. In the journal entry, Scissors and Silks, Flowers and Trees, and Geraniums Ruined by the War : Virginia Woolf s Ecological Critique of Science in Mrs. Dalloway written by Justyna Kostkowska, Kostkowska argues that, By referring to human experience in natural terms, [Woolf] reinforces the inseparability of nature and culture, and shows their mutuality (187). A reader might be stunned to consider that was written just twenty years ago and that Rich s first pregnancy happened only forty three years ago, since her choices as an educated woman were so limited compared to now. When her account of feeling like she was only acting as a woman (having no idea what she wanted, and having a child because it was expected of a real woman ) is introduced, her lack of choices reads like either a dismal Margaret Atwood science fiction novel or a scene from the very long ago past. Similary, when Rich cites her example of a primitive attitude by quoting a doctor s medical opinion that women are psychologically unbalanced when they attempt to resist the demands of the institution [of motherhood], (263) it is quite surprising to realize that this opinion was written in 1967, a mere thirty years ago. Fred Feldman argues that it is bad for the person who dies because it deprives the person of good things that would have happened if he or she had lived. This argument takes more of a what if? standpoint, and is weak. A stronger belief, held by Lucretius in his essay The Mind and the Spirit Will Die , is that death is not bad for the one who is dead because the spirit is composed of matter incapable of surviving without the body, and therefore, when one dies they can no longer suffer. Therefore, young John Doe s death of being run over by a trolley and dying is not bad for him. The mind is physical and composed of matter. Lucretius considers the situation of when the body is infected by illness to provide an example that proves this. When the body is infected by a contagion, the mind is often affected as well. For example, the mind can speak foolishly, or distractedly, and one can doze off due to drowsiness, where they are not yet awake or asleep and not hear voices or recognize faces around them, or in a coma, shut off and not be alive or dead. Because the mind is obviously invaded by the disease, it must be destructible. Therefore, if the mind is destructible, and can be affected to violent illnesses, it is hard to believe that it can survive in open air without a body to protect it. Lucretius also considers an objection to this claim, and suggest a world in which the spirit or mind is immortal. If the body has five senses, the mind must as well. However, a spirit, departed from the body, cannot have bodily parts like eyes, a nose, a hand, etc. and without these it cannot perceive the senses or be sentient or exist. In addition, he questioned, that if the spirit is a immortal and slipped into the body at birth, why does it not have any memory of its earlier existence? If it has no memory of its previous existence, then it must be a new creation and be able to be born, like the body, and previous spirits must die and die with the body. Furthermore, if the spirit existed before the body, it would contradict the fact that the mind and body are one in the same and grow together if the spirit had a prior existence. Simple correlation research in the US indicates that children typically aged 2 6 years who view more television advertising request more products from their parents. This is known as pester power. It has been found that parents are more likely to buy products when kids ask for them in the shop (nag factor). As children age, they develop the cognitive capacity to contextualise and act critically on the observations made, reducing the amount of requests for products (Australian Communications and Media Authority, 2007). Children who are exposed to TV commercials for toys not only develop the initial idea for the toy but repeatedly pester their parents to buy it. This is exploitation on the parents behalf as it often causes parent child conflict when the parents deny their children the product (Wilcox et al. 2004). Another troubling issue relating to child advertising exploitation is in reference to food ads. Half of the advertisements in the UK directed at children concern food.
