Challenges and Opportunities
9. How the Government Is Facilitating R&D
• Innovate UK is the UK’s innovation agency and exists to
accelerate the UK’s economic growth by providing
support to businesses by reducing the risk involved in
making innovative leaps.
• Innovate UK does this by providing funding for
projects which might otherwise have not been
undertaken were this funding not available. This
benefits both the company and the UK as it promotes
economic growth by facilitating the creation of new
technologies and therefore increasing business
opportunities within the UK.
• Similar endeavours are found throughout the UK such
as:
- HVM Catapult, a group of research centres
created with £140m of government funding.
- APC, a non-profit organisation which facilitates
funding to UK-based R&D Projects.
10. Our Collaborative
Projects With
Innovate UK
Brandauer currently has 5 different
projects receiving funding via Innovate
UK, close to £1.5 million secured so far
across all the projects.
These projects are as follows:
• CompEtE – Jaguar Land Rover
• DER – Equipmake
• Face Mask Quick Clip Tool – 3M
• Ricardo – Ricardo
• Saietta APC - Saietta

17. Short Term
C Brandauer & Co Ltd 17
More staff can be involved or be hired to
take on more business as soon as projects
are secured (apprentice involvement and
dedicated R&D manager).
Opportunities for more business with new
customers as Innovate UK assists in the
procurement of projects.
Grows the business’s portfolio and pushes
Brandauer to further diversify into new
revenue streams and emerging sectors.
18. Medium
Term
C Brandauer & Co Ltd 18
Experience gained on projects can be carried
over to others, increasing the overall experience
level of the Brandauer team and making future
projects in the same area more efficient.
Financial boosts from Innovate UK grants gives
additional stable revenue streams (pandemic).
Job security for engineers.
Widening of networks and knowledge (academic
engagement).
19. Long Term
C Brandauer & Co Ltd 19
New methods and technologies developed can be used to
secure more business from similar industries once the
projects are finished.
Gives Brandauer the edge on innovation, as the projects
allow for adaption to incoming trends, such as the rapid
uptake of EVs.
Gives access to world class project management tools and
methods.
Access to more significant funding (CAPEX - Property and
Equipment).
Growth – in new markets and territories.
20. R&D carries inherent risk
even with funding.
No guarantee of successful
exploitation.
Value of partnerships only
evident after project
completion.
Projects require a large
amount of time investment
(even before they are
awarded).
Blurred line between R&D
and commercial exploitation.
Being the project lead is
demanding.

Pitfalls and Disadvantages
21. Advice

113. • Industrial GHG emissions are emissions that result from
industrial processes
• Industry is directly responsible for ≈ 23% of UK emissions
directly (DESNZ)
• Part of a complex system:
• Net-zero is the legal obligation
• Environmental sustainability is much broader than
CO2 emissions
• Achieving net-zero will require a systems approach
• The right solutions must be put in the right places
• Transition to net-zero is an opportunity:
• 2 million “green collar jobs” by 2030
• Greenshoring of industry across the UK
