INNOVATIONS
WARM UP - WHERE AM I?
I see I smell I hear
INNOVATIONS
The unreal conditional
Real conditional
If I need a car, I’ll
buy one.
An unreal conditional sentence has an 'if'
clause that is a condition that is not real, is
imaginary, or is unlikely to occur.
INNOVATIONS
Unreal conditional
If I won the lottery,
I’d build a mansion.
LOOK!
REAL CONDITIONAL
If I need a car, I’ll buy one.
INNOVATIONS
UNREAL CONDITIONAL(would)
If I won the lottery, I’d
build a mansion
Might / Could
We use might/could if the
result is not certain.
If they wanted to use
less fuel, they could buy
a plug in vehicle.
Let’s practice
INNOVATIONS
If I ____________ study, I _____________ to the movie with you. (not, have to / go)
If you ___________ some ice cream, I __________ you eat it. (buy / help)
If he __________ smart, he _____ every paycheck so fast. (be / not, spend)
If the weather _______ so chilly, we _______at the beach today. (not, be / be)
Use a comma (,) at the end
of the If clause.
If I became a millionaire right now, I
would never have to work again.
1.
If I lived near the mountains, I would go
hiking every weekend.
2.
My mother could e-mail me instead of
calling if she knew how to use a computer
3.
If my boyfriend didn’t work so much, we'd
go out more often.
4.
I'd take my whole family on vacation to
the U.S. if it wasn't so complicated to get a
visa.
5.
INNOVATIONS
QUESTIONS
A: If your doctor ___________ (tell) you to get more exercise, which sport __________
you __________ (choose)?
1.
B: I don’t know, but I _____________ (go) swimming three or four times a week.
2. A:If you __________ (have) two months to travel, where __________ you ___________
(go)?
B: Oh, that’s easy! I ____________ (fly) to Paris. I’ve always wanted to go there.
3.A:What ___________ you ___________ (do) if your motorcycle ______________ (break
down)?
B:If I wasn’t able to fix it, I ____________ (have to) walk everywhere.
The past unreal
conditional
Present unreal
conditional
If I won the lottery,
I’d build a mansion
We use past unreal conditionals to talk about things in the past that were not
true (but hypothetically could have been) and the results of what would have
happened if that was the case.
Simply put: it was possible, but it did not happen.
INNOVATIONS
Past unreal
conditional
If I had known that I was
going to be late, I would
have called you.
STRUCTURE
We use:
‘if’ clause - past perfect (had+ppv)
Result clause - would have + ppv
INNOVATIONS
If I had known that I was going to be late, I
would have called you.
If I’d known the car was so small, I wouldn’t
have rented it.
Look for the structure
in these sentences.
If I had owned a car, I would have driven to
work. But I didn't own one, so I took the bus. She
would have traveled around the world if she had
had more money. But she didn't have much
money, so she never traveled. I would have read
more as a child if I hadn't watched so much TV.
Unfortunately, I did watch a lot of TV, so I never
read for entertainment.
INNOVATIONS
If I’d known the car was
so small, I might not have
rented it.
If I’d known the car was so
small, I wouldn’t have
rented it.
WOULD COULD MIGHT
If I’d known the car was so
small, I couldn’t have
rented it.
Look! - Could have and might have
states there is a possibility
INNOVATIONS
A: If you had failed an important exam,
would you have told your parents?
B: ______________________________
INNOVATIONS
01
A: If you had left at 10 am, could you have
gotten to the interview on time?
B: ______________________________
02
After I graduated from university, I applied for a marketing position with a prominent bank with branches
all over the world. I didn't get the job because they wanted someone who spoke Spanish fluently. I
______________(could, take) Spanish in high school, but I didn't. I took an acting class instead. If I
_____________(take) Spanish, I _____________(get) the job. Just imagine, if I had actually gotten the
job, I ____________ (move) to Spain. My entire life _____________ (could, go) in a totally different
direction. If I had accepted the job and moved to Spain, I _____________(might, meet) a Spanish woman
and ___________ (get) married. If that had actually happened, I probably ______________ (stay) in
Spain. We_____________ (might, have) children. Unfortunately, I didn't get the job and I didn't go to
Spain. I got a boring job and I live alone. If I had just taken Spanish, my life _________________ (be)
much more interesting.
