Symbolism Of Vampirism In Dracula
We can also see how the Victorian Society also helps create the story, how it is wrote and how it
influences Dracula so much. Vampirism is just a polite way Stoker has made to secretly talk about sex
since anything that brought a blush to your cheeks was forbidden during the Victorian era. For
example, when Lucy first gets bitten while sleepwalking There was undoubtedly something, long and
black, bending over the half reclining white figure (Dracula 98). Lucy gets bitten by Dracula and she
is already talking with three other men, ends up marrying one, this is in no way the ideal Victorian
woman. Not only is she not an ideal Victorian woman, but to add on to the list of why she is not The
vampiric tradition of blood sucking is symbolic of the exchange of bodily fluids during sex. For
Stoker, writing in the sexually repressed Victorian age, vampirism is a convenient metaphor for sex
and the closest he could get to writing about sex in a respectable novel (NovelGuide). As we all know
she has many exchanges of bodily fluids, not only the blood sucking of Dracula, but in fact blood
transfusions from all three men as they vowed to never speak of it since Arthur believes that the
transfusion made him and Lucy truly married None of us said a word of the other operations, and none
of us ever shall (Dracula 188). Even though the audiences knows that the blood transfusion made by
the men was meant as a kind gesture to save Lucy s life as opposed to Dracula s blood being the

How Did The Big Bang Theory Exist
Stephen Hawking, a physicist cosmologist, and dreamer, main goal has always been to find out how
the universe works and to determine why it exists at all (Hawking). To accomplish this goal, he creates
a theory that explains the origin of the universe and the steps leading to the formation of the elements.
The universe is about 14 billion years old and consists of many clusters that has approximately 400
billion stars. In fact, the Earth and everything around us are made by stars (Hawking). The Big Bang
Theory is used to tell how the universe and earth was created. The universe started with a small hot
ball of energy, it went from a small atom to expanding across space within seconds. As the universe
began to cool, it eventually began to create ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After carbon sinks to the middle of the star it also fuses with itself and creates oxygen and now
oxygen is at the center of the star. The same process repeats with oxygen and it forms iron. Iron is the
last thing that is formed because it does not produce energy, therefore it will not fuse with itself, so it
forms the core of the star. The elements in these layers have formed an onion. After iron is settled in
the center, the star begins to cool and the star will start to compress. When the star compresses, the
temperature begins to increase and eventually the star will explode resulting in a

Vladimir Lenin And The Soviet Revolution
Vladimir Lenin has proven to be a difficult figure to place in history. Some choose to view him as one
of the most influential political leaders in history, while others allow him to fade off into the past.
Lenin s image also greatly depends on where one lives. In the western half of the world, Lenin is
viewed as a man of destruction, and Winston Churchill called him The Grand Repudiator. In other
parts of the world, he is viewed as a man who tried to make the best out of a failing situation. Lenin
was a revolutionary intellectual who establish the Bolshevik Party (later renamed the Communist
Party). He was the leader of the Bolshevik Revolution, and, therefore, began the first government of
the Soviet Union. Lenin became leader of the USSR in 1922 and ruled until his death in 1924, when
Joseph Stalin assumed power. Though many argue that Lenin started one of the worst governments in
history, Russian Communism, Lenin actually provided a solution for the troubling times in Russia. In
the 1890, Lenin quit his job as a lawyer and moved to St. Petersburg where he became involved with a
group of radicals that supported the ideas of Karl Marx. In 1903 at the Second Congress of the
Russian Social Democratic Labor Party (RSDLP), Lenin and his fellow radicals argued for the
development of a new political party that was tight knit and limited in number. This party would be
highly involved in organizational work. Later in 1904 1905 when Russia went to war with Japan, and

Wb Yeats As A Dynamic Poet
William Butler Yeats is one of the most renowned Anglo Irish poets and a winner of the Nobel Prize
for Literature in 1923. As a representative symbolist poet his primary focus was to place his love for
his origins, literature, philosophy and history in his art. The world that he presents in his works is a
mixture of natural, human and cultural values. There is constant renewal, experimentation and utter
dedication to the craft of poetry in his works. Of all the poets in our course, WB Yeats is easily our
favorite. His poetry has a dynamic quality. Several aspects of his poetry that appeal the most to us are
the political or polemical dimension to his work, his use of nature as a theme and his reflection on old
age, body and the soul and finally his discussion on mysticism and reincarnation of the ... Show more

One of the most important aims of poetry is to give the reader aesthetic pleasure. But what is more
important is that it should present reality truthfully and defend human values artistically. It should
envision a society where people can live a better life. Yeats did just that. The greatness of his poetry
lies in the fact that it interprets the contemporary political events within the framework of a
philosophical system. All the great poets speak of people and rise above the petty politics of their
class. The cross the boundary of politics and enter into the realm of philosophy. Yeats too rose above
the ephemerality of politics and made an attempt to achieve permanence in poetry by following the
philosophical system. Being from an Anglo Irish family, he could have easily gone to the English side
but what he chose was to represent the repressed Irish people. He was a nationalist but he spoke of all
nations colonized by the British. He had a special sympathy for India. As a poet he was concerned
with human values and believed that there should be a proper balance between the matter and

Descartes s Theory Of Knowledge
Descartes theorized that in order to acquire knowledge, there essentially is some rational technique for
attaining it, and that the expenditure of the senses, or any other individual capability was not a
dependable basis. In his third meditation he says, I know that even bodies are not perceived by the
senses, or by the faculty of imagination, but by the intellect alone (69). As a rationalist Descartes
supposed that this withstood identically for everyone, that all people have rational learned concepts.
He assumed that knowledge of external things was a result of only the cognizance, and not the senses.
Descartes also anticipated that the entire universe was scientifically logical, and that everything could
be comprehended by deduction. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The terms self and substance in Hume s view could refer to something only if they are meaningful.
Such terms can be meaningful only if the ideas associated with them were derived from sensation.
Hume s theory of meaning therefore emphasizes the fact that the person exists not in terms of
substance, but rather in terms of ideas that are derived from the senses. Man experienced the world
through sensations generated by his physical existence. Hume s position is quite simply that persons
consist of mind and body, the distinction between experience and the world to which it refers. While
Descartes is truthful in his statement that the senses deceive us in some circumstances, his wide
ranging skepticism about the senses is not justified. In order to make his case, Descartes presented the
example of the stick appearing to be deformed by the water in which he has found that his senses had
in fact deceived him. To be vindicated in claiming that the senses deceive, a person would be required
to be capable of recognizing when an error of the senses has taken place. In other words, the person
would need to be able to differentiate amongst being erroneous and being accurate. For example, a
person would need to know that the sticks appearance was an optical illusion and therefore what is
seen is not what is actually there. However, in knowing this, a person is able to perceive the deception
and thus avoid the error in senses. Descartes, in arguing

The Market For Purchasing And Selling Houses Collapsed
In 2008, the market for purchasing and selling houses collapsed. Previous to 2008, speaking
specifically between 2000 to 2006, many housing loan companies were offering a low interest rates,
which lead to many lenders approving loan applications to individuals who had low or poor credit.
When the collapse began, the once low interest rates increased dramatically, causing many of those
individuals were unable to keep up with their payments, which resulted in the foreclosure of their
homes. To the extent of this dilemma, many banks went bankrupt, which lead to a number of Wall
Street firms in taking a loss.
It seems unethical for lenders to approve a Subprime loan, or a high interest loan issued to individuals
that have poor credit score. It is to be understood that the lender will initiate a higher interest rate to
those individual(s) to protect the lender themselves in the event that a nonpayment may occur. How
does that affect the individual(s)? How is it feasible for a lender to charge high interest rates to a
person with low credit score?
This affects the person(s) that were approved immensely. There are many different types of
homebuyers and there are many reasons for individuals to have low credit scores. For the sake of this
essay, the focus will be on lower income individuals that are money smart , who could not build credit
due to the fact that they have never been able to take out a serious loan.
The silver lining for the lenders is that no matter how low the

Technology can increase productivity to help countries compete with other countries in selling goods
and services. Some say that without technological improvements, the economy would grow slowly or
not at all. Society could remain the same for years.
Ways to manufacture goods have changed continuously through history. Today, several important new
advances in technology are transforming. These technologies create new products; most of them also
change the way people in society interact. These technologies have a tremendous impact on our
financial resources. Some of the technologies that are having the greatest effect on the economy are:
robotics, automation and computerization.
Everyday in society people are making improvements, and decisions that have an impact on their
society and technology. One of the most important decisions we make concerns the way we move
ourselves, and our possessions. Our system of transportation greatly affects how we use energy,
develop technology, the economy and environment, and our relationships.
When Henry Ford was starting out on his remarkable career in Detroit the economy was at an all time
low and at the time no one could of forecasted what was about to happen. Carriage and buggy whip
makers were still making good profits in a growing market, and there were few cars on the dusty
roads. Yet, within a few short years, Ford and others would shape consumer

Cla Research Paper
Mechanism of the Health promoting Effects of the Food Ingredient
Evidence suggests that the biological effectiveness of CLA are due to the separate actions of cis 9,
trans 11 and trans 10, cis 12 isomers. It is likely that numerous health effects are enhanced by
synergistic actions of these isomers. Findings such as, inhibition of chemically induced
carcinogenesis, enhanced immune system, reduction of atherosclerosis, enhanced growth, fat
reduction are attributed to a mixture of these CLA isomers (Pariza, Park, Cook, 2001).

Insulin resistance can also be caused by increased triglycerides and free fatty acids intake. This is due
to the effect Triglycerides and free fatty acids have on insulin stimulated signal pathways,
translocation protein 4 and glucose uptake (Choi, Jung, Park, Song, 2004). It is found that CLA has a
regulatory effect on glucose and lipid metabolism regulators. CLA affects the PPAR y ligand, a major
receptor that influences the expression and transcription of genes that are related to the metabolic
effects of glucose and lipids. Such protein regulators as aP2, insulin dependent glucose transporter 4,
FATp, ACS and adiponectin are all influenced by increased CLA. (Xiao Rong Zhoua, Chang Hao
Suna, Jia Ren Liua, b, Dan Zhaoa, 2008). It was also theorized that CLA may act on other glucose
regulators such as phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase, glucose 6 phosphate, glucokinase, sterol
regulation element finding protein, acyl coenzyme A oxidase, fatty acid synthase and uncoupling
protein. Testing done on rats with a mixture of cis 9, trans 11 and trans 10, cis 12 CLA had found that
the only effected regulatory agents were regulators involved in gluconeogenesis such as Phosphoenol
carboxykinase and transcriptional factors, sterol regulating element binding protein 1c and PPAR y
(Choi, Jung, Park, Song, 2004). The main regulatory effect on insulin resistance was the effect on
ligand PPAR y, a key regulator in lipid homeostasis. Mixtures of CLA isomers consisting of cis 9,
trans 11 and trans 10,cis 12 effect gene expression of PPARy mRNA in rats. It was found to have
affected the levels of aP2, FATP, ACS and adipoenectin mRNA expression in adipose tissue. CLA
increased These regulatory proteins resulting in an uptake of free fatty acids into the adipose tissue
and decreasing uptake into the muscle tissue. This has been found to improve muscle insulin

Essay On Irish Immigration To America
The mid late 1800 s, immigration is rampant within the United States, approximately 12,000,000
foreigners are attempting to enter the country, searching for a second chance or a fresh start ( Rise of
Industrial America, 1876 1900 ). Among the many nationalities immigrating were the Irish, coming to
the Land of The Free in an attempt to escape the famine, disease, and poverty that lingered from the
Great Potato Famine. The potential for a clean slate was so tempting that between 1820 and 1930, as
many as 4.5 million Irish came to America ( Irish Catholic Immigration to America ). However,

The answer can be simplified down to racism. Racism is a problem, it has always been a problem, it
will most likely always be a problem. The Irish dealt with extreme prejudice and hatred when the
arrived here, today the target of abuse are the Mexicans and Muslims. Two peoples that merely did as
everyone else did, they came to America looking for a second chance. While yes, there is validity to
the notion that terrorist attacks in the country have been caused by Muslims, and that there are
multitudes of illegal Mexican immigrants, that does not sanction being able to discriminate against an
entire population for the acts of some. To truly learn from the heinous ways of one s predecessors, one
must must go back and see what was wrong and really make an effort to prevent it from happening
again. We must go back and view the sins of those who came before us and take heed of the lessons to
learn, and be more tolerant and kind to those around us, not judging based on race, culture, or
ethnicity. We must learn to accept

Symptoms And Treatment Of An Immune Mediated Disease
An immune mediated disease is a disease where the immune system damages its own body systems
because of an inability to recognize normal immune responses. Equine recurrent uveitis, also known
as moon blindness, is an immune mediated disease that causes ocular inflammation in horses. The
immune response of the horse s body overreacts to the inner tissue of the eye. In chronic conditions,
cataracts, glaucoma, retinal degeneration and lens luxation can occur resulting in blindness. Potential
causes may include bacterial infections (leptospirosis, E coli), viral infections (equine influenza virus),
parasitic infections (neck threadworms), tooth root abscess, hoof abscess and blunt trauma. Equine
recurrent uveitis is encountered in horses only. Clinical signs of equine recurrent uveitis may be
noticed if the horse appears as if it is holding the affected eye shut if it is painful or sensitive to light.
A blue or hazy appearance may be seen in the cornea and the sclera can appear bloodshot. Excessive
tear production should be considered a possible sign of equine recurrent uveitis. An ophthalmologic
exam will rule out other causes of uveitis. Diagnostic tests performed include tonometry, which
measures the intraocular pressure and will rule out glaucoma. A flourescein stain is performed to
detect corneal injury and will rule out ulcerative keratitis. Treatment for equine recurrent uveitis
focuses on pain management, reduction in inflammation and prevention of vision loss.

As the flame of revolution spread throughout the world, the ideas of a better government were shared;
The American Bill of Rights, Declaration of Independence and The Declaration of the Rights of Man
show how France and America borrowed ideas during a trying time in the country. The Declaration of
Independence was written during the beginning battles of the American Revolution and not long after
France followed suit with the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. Similar in ideas to

While the documents were written for different causes, their overall purpose remains similar. Without
the Declaration of Independence, disgruntled colonists would not have been brought together to fight
for the cause. During the revolution soldiers stood together as one, setting brother equal to brother. In
a similar manner, the Bill of Rights united the colonists in mindset; that every man should be allowed
rights. The Bill of Rights corrected many of the wrongdoings by the English government that made
the colonists revolt, to prevent a revolution from happening in America. The Declaration of
Independence and the Bill of Rights unified the nation as a whole. It is no surprise that the Declaration
of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen and the American Bill of rights share many similarities. The
Bill of Rights restated many ideas from the Virginia Declaration of Rights, crafted by George Mason.
The Declaration of the Rights of Man was also influenced by Mason s ideas during the framing of the
document. Both pieces were heavily influenced by John Locke s philosophies of every man s right to
life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The similarities between the documents show their close

Sustainable Tourism is a Myth. To what extent do you agree with this statement? (15 Marks)
Sustainable Tourism is essentially an industry committed to making a low impact on the natural
environment and local culture, while helping to generate income and employment for local people. As
Global economists forecast continuing international tourism growth, this continuous growth will place
great stress on remaining biologically diverse habitats and indigenous cultures, which are often used to
support mass tourism. Therefore it is important that sustainable tourism is promoted and that people
are educated about the opportunities provided in order to minimize the effects that tourism poses on
the natural environment while helping to benefit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, both LEDC s and MEDC s are becoming to reliant on mass tourism and are not taking
into the account the impacts in the long term for example 85% of Majorca s income is through tourism
which means there is a lack of economic independence because if the island were to suddenly become
unfashionable then the Island would be left in a vulnerable income. This is especially the case here as
tourism has destroyed farming and agricultural labour which used to be the main source of income
which means Majorca has no other form of income to fall back on if tourism was to decrease in the
area.
Moreover, one of the main issues that sustainable tourism tries to embrace is having a low impact on
tourism but many countries who undertake in mass tourism have failed to properly take this into
account. For example, tourism around the Great Barrier Reef in Australia is the largest commercial
activity there and accounts for 87% of the reefs economic output. However, this tourism has created
pollution through waste disposal, pollution from boats etc. This easily damages the Coral reef which
thus affects the species dependent on them. In addition, tourists disturb the wildlife as many seabirds
nest on the ground and when disturbed leave the nest which thus exposes young or eggs to predators
and developments for tourism damage coastal ecosystems such as the mangrove forests and estuaries

Taking a Look at Holden Vehicles
The antiquity of Holden can be found back from 1856, as soon as James Alexander Holden started as a
saddlery business in Adelaide, South Australia. The business then evolved over a period of years,
developing from mending cars upholstery to the complete invention of automobile body shells. The
company then became the exclusive dealer of American car manufacturer General Motors in Australia.
By the year of 1920 Holden started to supply trams cars for Melbourne. On 1931, Holden merged with
the American Car manufacturer, General Motors and become General Motors Holden s Limited (GM
H). In 1936, Holden opened a new HQ and assembly plant at Fisherman s Bend in Port Melbourne.
Holden was also considered as one of the only seven fully integrated global GM operations that
designs, builds and sells vehicles for Australia and the world (Holden, 2010).
Reason for The closure of the GM Holden.
Recently on 11 December 2013, Holden announced that it would stop production of Holden vehicles
in Australia. The decision by the auto transnational signals a massive escalation in the assault on the
living standards and social rights of the employed class across Australia. The entire Australian car
industry aspects the potential of being liquidated, with hundreds of thousands of jobs destroyed.

This investigation attempts to answer the question how the geography of ancient Japan and China are
similar as well as different. The question is important because some people might assume that the
geography of Japan and China is very similar while it in fact isn t. The issues that will be addressed
are how these two countries geography affected them by factors such as natural defense systems,
trading, and food sources within each culture. This investigation will focus on the time period of 250
710 BCE and the places included will be China and Japan. This will be accomplished through a

Mao Zedong Of The Communist Party Of China
In the 1960 s the Chairman of the Communist Party of China, Mao Zedong feared that China would
move too far in a revisionist direction with an emphasis on expertise rather than on ideological purity
as the Soviet model was doing. In response Mao gathered a group of radicals such as Defense Minister
Lin Biao to help him attack current party leadership to reassert the authority he had lost during the
recent economic crisis and the Great Leap Forward. In 1966, Mao launched the Great Proletarian
Cultural Revolution (1966 1976). The goal of the movement was to purify Chinese society by
upholdling only true Communist ideology. This was an attempt to revive the revolutionary spirit that
had led to victory in the civil war decades earlier and the formation of the People s Republic of China.
Mao claimed that bourgeois foundations had infiltrated the government and society with the intentions
of restoring capitalism. Mao believed that the current Communist leaders were guiding China in the
wrong direction and as a result he called the nation s youth to purge capitalist and traditional
fundamentals from Chinese society and re impose Maoist thought in their place. This lead to a violet
class struggle, as China s youth responded to Mao s call by forming Red Guard groups around the
country. The movement was soon amplified to a class struggle on all fronts as it spread into the
military, the urban workers and even the Communist Party leadership. President Liu Shaoqi and other

purpose of this paper is to discuss an ethical dilemma that I have encountered in my nursing practice
and how the dilemma was perceived. Culturally congruent care will also be defined. Describe an
Ethical Dilemma Working in obstetrics and gynecology, the patient population is all female. We see
many Muslim patients from Arab countries. In any obstetric or gynecology scenario Muslim women
must have a female provider (Mclean et al., 2012). We had a patient scheduled with one of the male
physicians for the first obstetric appointment, where a physical exam would be completed. When the
patient arrived, her spouse informed the staff that she cannot be seen by a male provider. The male
physician was not familiar with this preference. He was frustrated because when this patient presents
to the hospital for delivery, there may not be a female on call to care for her. Fortunately, there was
another physician in clinic that day that could see her so the patient would not have the inconvenience
of being rescheduled. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Ken Price s Sculpture Bro
Page 1 Ken Price Bro In Ken Price s sculpture Bro, he uses form to create a 3D sculptural image of
abstract lines. Bro is a very abstract sculpture in shape and form, as it does not attempt to portray
reality, but seeks to achieve its effect using shape, form, and texture. The form of the sculpture is
smooth, full, and asymmetrical. The shape of bottom half of the sculpture is wide and thick, creating a
sense of balance in the artwork. Expanding up and out of the bottom of the sculpture is two tall,
straight lines. The lines are thick and smooth, and at the top of both lines they curl into an O shape,

Negative Effects Of Social Media Essay
Social media in this day and age weighs heavy on our everyday lives. Society tends to spend way too
much time on their mobile devices and computers on social media of all sorts including but not limited

family practice. Social media may help with some everyday activities but during family time can be
unacceptable for some people and may actually hurt their feelings. This can also make the other party
feel unimportant or ignored, creating a tense barrier in a relationship. This is something that I myself

Analysis Of Sharon Olds The One Girl At The Boys Party
While many leaders in politics, business, science, and education strive for change, there still persists a
deep divide between male and female roles in the workplace and in society. This gap begins in
childhood as demonstrated in Sharon Olds (b. 1942) The One Girl at the Boys Party (1984). This
poem describes a young girl who attends a swimming party where she is the only female guest. It
relies on science and math imagery to contrast the boys physicality with the girl s intellectual ability,
and to juxtapose her physical features with the boys features. This figurative language creates a
distinction to challenge the disparity between male and female roles and their separation in social life,
which begins at a young age. Olds use of science and math imagery serves as an extended metaphor
for the juxtaposition between the one girl at the party and the other guests, which represents the social
divide between the genders. Olds references to math and science contrasts the boys physicality with
the subject s intellectual ability. At the beginning of the poem, the speaker mentions that they [the
boys] tower and/bristle, she stands there smooth and sleek,/her math scores unfolding in the air around
her (Olds 234). This description of the party guests creates an automatic physical distinction between
the girl and boys (by comparing their tower[ing] and bristl[ing] appearance from her smooth and sleek
one), but also wordlessly defines her by her math scores, rather

President Carter Was A Good Guy
Everyone wants to be remembered after they die. For an American president, they are guaranteed
remembrance. However, the main concern becomes how will their presidency be thought of? Will a
positive or negative light reflect on their pages of the history textbooks? The last six presidents have
left lasting legacies for the American people. Whether for good or not so good, these presidents have
shaped the future of America. Jimmy Carter was a good guy. Unlike so many presidents before him,
Carter came from a humble background with solid Southern Baptist roots. Unfortunately, he ended up
in the wrong office at the wrong time. Carter inherited the economic problems left over from the
Nixon and Ford presidencies. Between Stagflation and the Iranian Hostage crisis, Carter could not
catch a break. These events would taint the Carter legacy in the eyes of the American people for
decades to come. Perhaps if Carter had inherited a clean slate economically speaking, he might have
left a more endearing legacy to his name. Still, Carter s attempt to reconcile Israel and Egypt allowed
for God s blessings on America because of the kindness Jimmy Carter showed Israel. Sometimes good
guys just get bad raps. After the flop of poor Carter s presidency in the minds of American citizens,
Ronald Reagan swooped in as a remarkable fixer upper. With only one scandal to his name, Reagan s
legacy remains virtually un marred. Still, Reagan s economic policy left America in greater debt

After the events that took place and Nixon s resignation, a massive trend of distrust in the government
began. Even today a wide majority of people still do not trust the American government, this is one of
the greatest effects the scandal had on the United States. One law that was created due to impact of
Watergate was the Sunshine Act, the Sunshine Act is a law that requires government agencies to be
open and public to Americans. Another law that was passed was the Ethics in Government Act of

responsible for issuing rules and regulations about ethical conduct and financial disclosure, providing
training in ethics, monitoring the ethics of practices in departments and agencies, and giving guidance
on matters of ethics. (USLegal). At the end of the whole scandal many government officials had been

The Dawes General Allotment Act Essay
The Dawes General Allotment Act was made to create the great symbol of the United States just hours
after the Declaration of Independence was written. Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and Thomas
Jefferson began preparing to a one of a kind, national seal. The seal went through three stages of
designs in early 1782 before the fourth was chosen in 1782. A second and third committee made
designs for the seal along with Charles Thompson. The first three designs played a part in the fourth
design that combined the three. Charles Thompson created the fourth design and it was approved by
congress on June 20, 1782. The Seal represents sovereignty for America. The seal s design is used as
our national coats of arms and is used to decorate on our military uniforms. I believe that the United
States won, even though this wasn t a battle. In the end the United States gained a symbol of the
country s sovereignty.

REAL MADRID CASE STUDY
Summary
Real Madrid is one of the most storied sports franchises in the world. It is one of the few sports teams
with international appeal to a very broad fan base. This case delves into how Real Madrid transitioned
from a good soccer team with a winning history into the global sports juggernaut we know today.
We first examined Real Madrid s revenue streams and found that from their inception through the
1970s their business model was based almost entirely on their ticket sales. After the 1970s up until
2003 they had some media rights, a small merchandising department, and some other negligible
streams of income. It was in 2003 that team President Florintino Perez decided to make Real Madrid

Execution of each stage allowed Real Madrid to take in revenue through several streams such as
match day and international competition, marketing(merchandise sold at the clubs web site and stores,
sponsorships, fan cards, etc. ), broadcast and pay tv revenue (Exhibit 1).
The club further evolved to identify 4 brand drivers that Perez stated would nurture and project the
Real Madrid brand worldwide. The first was the size of the audience, secondly the frequency in which
the audience engaged with the brand, thirdly, the socio demographic characteristics of the audience
and lastly, bridges that could be built to link the brand and the audience. Each of these changes
reflected the clubs transition to a global brand with marketing capability.
Growth opportunities for Real Madrid existed in both new and existing markets. With content seen as
the product, opportunities to provide new content to current markets were available through pay tv and
new technologies like movies, video games and use of the Real Madrid website. The website could
also be used to for additional merchandising as well. For new markets, winning on the field was
translated to good content and provided Real Madrid with an advantage over other clubs in the battle
to recruit new fans from international markets.
The greatest risk to Real Madrid s revenue streams was the prospect of losing on the field. Ideally, the

Both protagonists were passionately determined to find the truth.
? Both were impulsive.
? Both had immense self pride, but
? Ultimately, both were good natured.
? They seek revenge for their fathers (although this is ironic in Oedipus Rex)
? Although O s arrogance may have led to his downfall, it is their impulsiveness that does in each
man: O s decree of exile parallels the gods requirements, but Hamlet s stabbing of Ophelia s father
right after NOT stabbing Claudius means that, in the grand scheme of things, he will have to die rather
than assume the throne.
? Both plays are tragedies that result from behind the scenes machinations the gods plot against O s
family because of Laius, while King Hamlet s brother plots against him.
? Perhaps the vivid imagery of poison in Hamlet parallels the curse in the family blood in Greek
tragedies in Oedipus Rex.
? Both plays are written in highly poetic language.

Female Characters In Lavinia
Lavinia is a female character who has shown up in many texts throughout history. In Titus Livius
(Livy), The History of Rome, the role of women is consistently downplayed and is overshadowed by
men craving power through conquest and war during the evolution of Rome. Livy briefly mentions
Lavinia in the second chapter of the first book in The History of Rome, The Aborigines and Trojans
were soon after attacked together in war. Turnus, king of the Rutulians, to whom Lavinia had been
affianced before the coming of Aeneas... (Livy I, 2). Livy does not describe Lavinia s character or tell
us anything more about her. The character of Lavinia is suppressed by the overwhelming masculinity
of male characters in their conquest for power and is presented to us only as a supplement to her male
counterparts. In Smethurst s article analyzing Livy s characterization of women, A woman may even
cause trouble unintentionally, since her fateful gift of beauty can induce a man to neglect his most
solemn duty, devotion to the State (Smethurst, 83). This quote implies that a woman, and more
specifically Lavinia, is nothing but a distraction to a man and his important duties and obligations to
his beloved Rome. Livy s History also mentions the female characters of Cloelia, Virginia, Lucretia,
and Veturia who are given masculine characteristics, which is also done by Chaucer to the wife in The
Wife of Bath s Tale. Perhaps the assignment of male characteristics to female characters was done so

breakthroughs throughout all disciplines of science. Earthquakes, up until that time were a
phenomenon that many didn t know much about. Scientists didn t know the causes and hadn t
experienced an event as drastic as the earthquake caused by the San Andreas fault s shifting. The

Symbols Of Hobos During The Great Depression
A hobo is homeless person who wanders from place to place with no permanent home. Many schools
and business closed down due to the low numbers of young people. About 250,000 young people, from
ages 16 25 years old, left their homes in looking for a better life. About 2 million of the hobos during
the Great Depression(1929 1939) were men and 8,000 were women. Hobo signs helped hobos find
proper medical treatment, clean water, and a sanctuary (New). Some hobo s turned to be successful
and famous. Louis L amar was a famous author, Art Linkletter became a tv personality William O.

food. With riding trains being an option, many thought that jumping off and on to train carts was too

Cities welcomed hobos incase they needed a job. Symbols helped keep them out of trouble. Chalk was
used to write on trees and the ground to communicate with other hobos. Hobo s soon created their own
language, they used symbols to communicate with their fellow hobos. They would mark areas where
there was and wasn t food, help, work, water, or shelter. When hobo s had food they shared, even if
they were starving. They didn t have a permanent home. They had to live in filthy conditions, also
they were exposed to and had a number of illnesses. It didn t help that they didn t have good clothes,
and went days without food. A lot were injured and sick. People with serious injuries and sickness
were treated by hospitals. Also, food was always on their mind, daily they were looking for food just
so they wouldn t starve. There were hobo jungles, Hobo Jungles were a place where hobos could
gather together with other hobos and trade what they had (Camille). They were usual near railroads.

Observation Of Emily s Mouthing Behavior
The second child I observed was a 9 year old girl named Emily. Emily engages in mouthing behaviors.
This has become a safety issue and a concern for mom. Emily constantly puts anything in her mouth
and will lick, bite, chew or will usually consume it. Emily has swallowed things like: paint, nail
polish, lotion, shampoo, etc. When mom tries to redirect her, she will become frustrated. Mouthing is
defined as, insertion or consumption of non edible objects. The behavior that has been defined is
observable, measurable, clear, obvious and easily understood(Cooper, Heron Heward, 2007).
Observation took place in Emily s natural setting, which was at home. Observation took place over
three days. Emily was observed at the time when mom says her

Special Education Observation
This semester I visited the Reach Academy in West Harrison, New York. My experience observing
gave me incredible insight into the world of special education. The Reach Academy is a residential
treatment facility. Many of these students did not work well in the inclusive classroom setting. The
school features students with various different disabilities, including autism, emotional and behavioral
disorders, and speech and communication disabilities. During my fieldwork I observed two social
studies special education classroom. I observed an American History class and a global history class.
The first class I visited was a 12th grade American history class. The students planned to graduate this
coming June and were also preparing to take the Regents exams. The class included one special
education teacher and one teacher s assistant. Some students in the class had their own aide. The class
consisted of 7 students including students with autism and emotional and behavior disorders. The
lesson was on the the Declaration of Independence. The start of the lesson included the objective of
the lesson, which was for students to identify the key points of the Declaration of Independence. The
teacher greeted the class and turned their attention to the board. The board included a quote about
independence. The teacher asked the students to read the quote and answer the following questions,
Does this quote support independence? What reasons does he give to support his decision? What

ALL Essay
Signs and Symptoms
The signs and symptoms of ALL can present chronically or acutely, they are normally found during a
routine blood count of an asymptomatic child or during a life threatening hemorrhage, infection, or
episode of respiratory distress. Although ALL is a disease primarily of the bone marrow and peripheral
blood, any organ or tissue may be infiltrated by the abnormal cells. The symptoms in children can
have a much longer duration due to ALL has varies amounts of onset which may last from days to
months.
The first symptoms are usually non specific and include anorexia, irritability and lethargy. Fever is the
most common finding, occurring in approximately 60% of patients. Progressive bone marrow failure
leads to pallor ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Patients with ALL generally have a higher than normal white blood count and lower than normal red
blood cell and platelet counts. Blood tests are also performed to evaluate liver, kidney, and blood
clotting status. The physician will also check the levels of certain minerals and proteins for an accurate
diagnosis. The next step will be to perform a bone marrow biopsy, pending the blood test results. If the
results are abnormal or the doctor suspects leukemia despite normal cell counts, a bone marrow
aspiration and biopsy are the next steps. These are very common and safe procedures. Then, if bone
marrow examination confirms ALL, a spinal tap will be the next step, which means a needle will be
inserted into the spinal canal and cerebrospinal fluid with leukemia cells will be collected and will be
analyzed for signs that the disease has spread to the central nervous system. In most cases of
childhood ALL, leukemia cells are not found in the cerebrospinal fluid.
Disease Progression
There are two main types of ALL acute and chronic. Acute leukemia develops very quickly, while
chronic leukemia tends to develop slowly, usually over a period of months or years without causing
many symptoms. In ALL it mainly affects the lymphoid cells, as to in the chronic lymphocytic
leukemia (CLL) state, it affects the lymphoid cells. For ALL, staging does not occur in the same way
normal cancer cells do because the disease originates

Aldous Huxley Literary Analysis
Aldous Huxley, English writer, novelist and philosopher raised in upper class milieus to the end of the
19th century, is considered as one of the most brilliant men of his time, thanks to his great use of
intellectual analysis and satire among other resources as a medium for social criticism. His evolution
as a writer may be divided into three different phases determined by several changes in his way of
thinking or writing: he takes his first steps as a novelist through mysticism, then he falls under the
influence of D. H. Lawrence in what is called the Lawrencian interlude and finally, he comes back to
mysticism, retracing the path he once followed. His early novels, such as Crome Yellow (1921), Antic
Hay (1923) and Those Barren Leaves (1925), show the ironic, sceptic and real nature of Huxley in his
first phase. After having lost all faith in humanity after the Great War in 1914, he found the solution
for his despair in philosophical mysticism : we must be free from the body, the intellect and the
personality. This doctrine is particularly present in the latter novel mentioned, in which the character
Calamy takes the decision of living a hermit s life of meditation in the Italian mountains. ... Show

English aristocrat and society hostess who befriended writers, artists and people of intellectual circles
such as Virginia Woolf and T.S. Eliot. She was the inspiration for the character of Mrs Bidlake in
Huxley s Point Counter Point and some critics even consider her the inspiration for Lawrence s Lady
Chatterley because of her notable love

  • 2. Symbolism Of Vampirism In Dracula We can also see how the Victorian Society also helps create the story, how it is wrote and how it influences Dracula so much. Vampirism is just a polite way Stoker has made to secretly talk about sex since anything that brought a blush to your cheeks was forbidden during the Victorian era. For example, when Lucy first gets bitten while sleepwalking There was undoubtedly something, long and black, bending over the half reclining white figure (Dracula 98). Lucy gets bitten by Dracula and she is already talking with three other men, ends up marrying one, this is in no way the ideal Victorian woman. Not only is she not an ideal Victorian woman, but to add on to the list of why she is not The vampiric tradition of blood sucking is symbolic of the exchange of bodily fluids during sex. For Stoker, writing in the sexually repressed Victorian age, vampirism is a convenient metaphor for sex and the closest he could get to writing about sex in a respectable novel (NovelGuide). As we all know she has many exchanges of bodily fluids, not only the blood sucking of Dracula, but in fact blood transfusions from all three men as they vowed to never speak of it since Arthur believes that the transfusion made him and Lucy truly married None of us said a word of the other operations, and none of us ever shall (Dracula 188). Even though the audiences knows that the blood transfusion made by the men was meant as a kind gesture to save Lucy s life as opposed to Dracula s blood being the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. How Did The Big Bang Theory Exist Stephen Hawking, a physicist cosmologist, and dreamer, main goal has always been to find out how the universe works and to determine why it exists at all (Hawking). To accomplish this goal, he creates a theory that explains the origin of the universe and the steps leading to the formation of the elements. The universe is about 14 billion years old and consists of many clusters that has approximately 400 billion stars. In fact, the Earth and everything around us are made by stars (Hawking). The Big Bang Theory is used to tell how the universe and earth was created. The universe started with a small hot ball of energy, it went from a small atom to expanding across space within seconds. • 4. Vladimir Lenin And The Soviet Revolution Vladimir Lenin has proven to be a difficult figure to place in history. Some choose to view him as one of the most influential political leaders in history, while others allow him to fade off into the past. Lenin s image also greatly depends on where one lives. In the western half of the world, Lenin is viewed as a man of destruction, and Winston Churchill called him The Grand Repudiator. In other parts of the world, he is viewed as a man who tried to make the best out of a failing situation. Lenin was a revolutionary intellectual who establish the Bolshevik Party (later renamed the Communist Party). He was the leader of the Bolshevik Revolution, and, therefore, began the first government of the Soviet Union. Lenin became leader of the USSR in 1922 and ruled until his death in 1924, when Joseph Stalin assumed power. Though many argue that Lenin started one of the worst governments in history, Russian Communism, Lenin actually provided a solution for the troubling times in Russia. In the 1890, Lenin quit his job as a lawyer and moved to St. Petersburg where he became involved with a group of radicals that supported the ideas of Karl Marx. In 1903 at the Second Congress of the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party (RSDLP), Lenin and his fellow radicals argued for the development of a new political party that was tight knit and limited in number. This party would be highly involved in organizational work. Later in 1904 1905 when Russia went to war with Japan, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Wb Yeats As A Dynamic Poet William Butler Yeats is one of the most renowned Anglo Irish poets and a winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923. As a representative symbolist poet his primary focus was to place his love for his origins, literature, philosophy and history in his art. The world that he presents in his works is a mixture of natural, human and cultural values. There is constant renewal, experimentation and utter dedication to the craft of poetry in his works. Of all the poets in our course, WB Yeats is easily our favorite. His poetry has a dynamic quality. Several aspects of his poetry that appeal the most to us are the political or polemical dimension to his work, his use of nature as a theme and his reflection on old age, body and the soul and finally his discussion on mysticism and reincarnation of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the most important aims of poetry is to give the reader aesthetic pleasure. But what is more important is that it should present reality truthfully and defend human values artistically. It should envision a society where people can live a better life. Yeats did just that. The greatness of his poetry lies in the fact that it interprets the contemporary political events within the framework of a philosophical system. All the great poets speak of people and rise above the petty politics of their class. The cross the boundary of politics and enter into the realm of philosophy. Yeats too rose above the ephemerality of politics and made an attempt to achieve permanence in poetry by following the philosophical system. Being from an Anglo Irish family, he could have easily gone to the English side but what he chose was to represent the repressed Irish people. He was a nationalist but he spoke of all nations colonized by the British. He had a special sympathy for India. • 6. Descartes s Theory Of Knowledge Descartes theorized that in order to acquire knowledge, there essentially is some rational technique for attaining it, and that the expenditure of the senses, or any other individual capability was not a dependable basis. In his third meditation he says, I know that even bodies are not perceived by the senses, or by the faculty of imagination, but by the intellect alone (69). As a rationalist Descartes supposed that this withstood identically for everyone, that all people have rational learned concepts. He assumed that knowledge of external things was a result of only the cognizance, and not the senses. Descartes also anticipated that the entire universe was scientifically logical, and that everything could be comprehended by deduction. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The terms self and substance in Hume s view could refer to something only if they are meaningful. Such terms can be meaningful only if the ideas associated with them were derived from sensation. Hume s theory of meaning therefore emphasizes the fact that the person exists not in terms of substance, but rather in terms of ideas that are derived from the senses. Man experienced the world through sensations generated by his physical existence. Hume s position is quite simply that persons consist of mind and body, the distinction between experience and the world to which it refers. While Descartes is truthful in his statement that the senses deceive us in some circumstances, his wide ranging skepticism about the senses is not justified. In order to make his case, Descartes presented the example of the stick appearing to be deformed by the water in which he has found that his senses had in fact deceived him. To be vindicated in claiming that the senses deceive, a person would be required to be capable of recognizing when an error of the senses has taken place. In other words, the person would need to be able to differentiate amongst being erroneous and being accurate. For example, a person would need to know that the sticks appearance was an optical illusion and therefore what is seen is not what is actually there. However, in knowing this, a person is able to perceive the deception and thus avoid the error in senses. Descartes, in arguing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Market For Purchasing And Selling Houses Collapsed In 2008, the market for purchasing and selling houses collapsed. Previous to 2008, speaking specifically between 2000 to 2006, many housing loan companies were offering a low interest rates, which lead to many lenders approving loan applications to individuals who had low or poor credit. When the collapse began, the once low interest rates increased dramatically, causing many of those individuals were unable to keep up with their payments, which resulted in the foreclosure of their homes. To the extent of this dilemma, many banks went bankrupt, which lead to a number of Wall Street firms in taking a loss. It seems unethical for lenders to approve a Subprime loan, or a high interest loan issued to individuals that have poor credit score. It is to be understood that the lender will initiate a higher interest rate to those individual(s) to protect the lender themselves in the event that a nonpayment may occur. How does that affect the individual(s)? How is it feasible for a lender to charge high interest rates to a person with low credit score? This affects the person(s) that were approved immensely. There are many different types of homebuyers and there are many reasons for individuals to have low credit scores. For the sake of this essay, the focus will be on lower income individuals that are money smart , who could not build credit due to the fact that they have never been able to take out a serious loan. Insulin resistance can also be caused by increased triglycerides and free fatty acids intake. This is due to the effect Triglycerides and free fatty acids have on insulin stimulated signal pathways, translocation protein 4 and glucose uptake (Choi, Jung, Park, Song, 2004). It is found that CLA has a regulatory effect on glucose and lipid metabolism regulators. CLA affects the PPAR y ligand, a major receptor that influences the expression and transcription of genes that are related to the metabolic effects of glucose and lipids. Such protein regulators as aP2, insulin dependent glucose transporter 4, FATp, ACS and adiponectin are all influenced by increased CLA. (Xiao Rong Zhoua, Chang Hao Suna, Jia Ren Liua, b, Dan Zhaoa, 2008). It was also theorized that CLA may act on other glucose regulators such as phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase, glucose 6 phosphate, glucokinase, sterol regulation element finding protein, acyl coenzyme A oxidase, fatty acid synthase and uncoupling protein. Testing done on rats with a mixture of cis 9, trans 11 and trans 10, cis 12 CLA had found that the only effected regulatory agents were regulators involved in gluconeogenesis such as Phosphoenol carboxykinase and transcriptional factors, sterol regulating element binding protein 1c and PPAR y (Choi, Jung, Park, Song, 2004). The main regulatory effect on insulin resistance was the effect on ligand PPAR y, a key regulator in lipid homeostasis. Mixtures of CLA isomers consisting of cis 9, trans 11 and trans 10,cis 12 effect gene expression of PPARy mRNA in rats. It was found to have affected the levels of aP2, FATP, ACS and adipoenectin mRNA expression in adipose tissue. Among the many nationalities immigrating were the Irish, coming to the Land of The Free in an attempt to escape the famine, disease, and poverty that lingered from the Great Potato Famine. The potential for a clean slate was so tempting that between 1820 and 1930, as many as 4.5 million Irish came to America ( Irish Catholic Immigration to America ). • 13. Symptoms And Treatment Of An Immune Mediated Disease An immune mediated disease is a disease where the immune system damages its own body systems because of an inability to recognize normal immune responses. Equine recurrent uveitis, also known as moon blindness, is an immune mediated disease that causes ocular inflammation in horses. The immune response of the horse s body overreacts to the inner tissue of the eye. In chronic conditions, cataracts, glaucoma, retinal degeneration and lens luxation can occur resulting in blindness. Potential causes may include bacterial infections (leptospirosis, E coli), viral infections (equine influenza virus), parasitic infections (neck threadworms), tooth root abscess, hoof abscess and blunt trauma. Equine recurrent uveitis is encountered in horses only. Clinical signs of equine recurrent uveitis may be noticed if the horse appears as if it is holding the affected eye shut if it is painful or sensitive to light. A blue or hazy appearance may be seen in the cornea and the sclera can appear bloodshot. Excessive tear production should be considered a possible sign of equine recurrent uveitis. An ophthalmologic exam will rule out other causes of uveitis. Diagnostic tests performed include tonometry, which measures the intraocular pressure and will rule out glaucoma. A flourescein stain is performed to detect corneal injury and will rule out ulcerative keratitis. Treatment for equine recurrent uveitis focuses on pain management, reduction in inflammation and prevention of vision loss. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In 1966, Mao launched the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution (1966 1976). The goal of the movement was to purify Chinese society by upholdling only true Communist ideology. This was an attempt to revive the revolutionary spirit that had led to victory in the civil war decades earlier and the formation of the People s Republic of China. Mao claimed that bourgeois foundations had infiltrated the government and society with the intentions of restoring capitalism. Mao believed that the current Communist leaders were guiding China in the wrong direction and as a result he called the nation s youth to purge capitalist and traditional fundamentals from Chinese society and re impose Maoist thought in their place. This lead to a violet class struggle, as China s youth responded to Mao s call by forming Red Guard groups around the country. The movement was soon amplified to a class struggle on all fronts as it spread into the military, the urban workers and even the Communist Party leadership. The purpose of this paper is to discuss an ethical dilemma that I have encountered in my nursing practice and how the dilemma was perceived. Culturally congruent care will also be defined. Describe an Ethical Dilemma Working in obstetrics and gynecology, the patient population is all female. We see many Muslim patients from Arab countries. In any obstetric or gynecology scenario Muslim women must have a female provider (Mclean et al., 2012). We had a patient scheduled with one of the male physicians for the first obstetric appointment, where a physical exam would be completed. When the patient arrived, her spouse informed the staff that she cannot be seen by a male provider. The male physician was not familiar with this preference. He was frustrated because when this patient presents to the hospital for delivery, there may not be a female on call to care for her. • 27. Analysis Of Sharon Olds The One Girl At The Boys Party While many leaders in politics, business, science, and education strive for change, there still persists a deep divide between male and female roles in the workplace and in society. This gap begins in childhood as demonstrated in Sharon Olds (b. 1942) The One Girl at the Boys Party (1984). This poem describes a young girl who attends a swimming party where she is the only female guest. It relies on science and math imagery to contrast the boys physicality with the girl s intellectual ability, and to juxtapose her physical features with the boys features. This figurative language creates a distinction to challenge the disparity between male and female roles and their separation in social life, which begins at a young age. Olds use of science and math imagery serves as an extended metaphor for the juxtaposition between the one girl at the party and the other guests, which represents the social divide between the genders. Olds references to math and science contrasts the boys physicality with the subject s intellectual ability. At the beginning of the poem, the speaker mentions that they [the boys] tower and/bristle, she stands there smooth and sleek,/her math scores unfolding in the air around her (Olds 234). This description of the party guests creates an automatic physical distinction between the girl and boys (by comparing their tower[ing] and bristl[ing] appearance from her smooth and sleek one), but also wordlessly defines her by her math scores, rather ... However, the main concern becomes how will their presidency be thought of? Will a positive or negative light reflect on their pages of the history textbooks? The last six presidents have left lasting legacies for the American people. Whether for good or not so good, these presidents have shaped the future of America. Jimmy Carter was a good guy. Unlike so many presidents before him, Carter came from a humble background with solid Southern Baptist roots. Unfortunately, he ended up in the wrong office at the wrong time. Carter inherited the economic problems left over from the Nixon and Ford presidencies. Between Stagflation and the Iranian Hostage crisis, Carter could not catch a break. These events would taint the Carter legacy in the eyes of the American people for decades to come. Perhaps if Carter had inherited a clean slate economically speaking, he might have left a more endearing legacy to his name. Still, Carter s attempt to reconcile Israel and Egypt allowed for God s blessings on America because of the kindness Jimmy Carter showed Israel. Sometimes good guys just get bad raps. Patients with ALL generally have a higher than normal white blood count and lower than normal red blood cell and platelet counts. Blood tests are also performed to evaluate liver, kidney, and blood clotting status. The physician will also check the levels of certain minerals and proteins for an accurate diagnosis. The next step will be to perform a bone marrow biopsy, pending the blood test results. If the results are abnormal or the doctor suspects leukemia despite normal cell counts, a bone marrow aspiration and biopsy are the next steps. These are very common and safe procedures. Then, if bone marrow examination confirms ALL, a spinal tap will be the next step, which means a needle will be inserted into the spinal canal and cerebrospinal fluid with leukemia cells will be collected and will be analyzed for signs that the disease has spread to the central nervous system. In most cases of childhood ALL, leukemia cells are not found in the cerebrospinal fluid. Disease Progression There are two main types of ALL acute and chronic. Acute leukemia develops very quickly, while chronic leukemia tends to develop slowly, usually over a period of months or years without causing many symptoms. • 47. Aldous Huxley Literary Analysis Aldous Huxley, English writer, novelist and philosopher raised in upper class milieus to the end of the 19th century, is considered as one of the most brilliant men of his time, thanks to his great use of intellectual analysis and satire among other resources as a medium for social criticism. His evolution as a writer may be divided into three different phases determined by several changes in his way of thinking or writing: he takes his first steps as a novelist through mysticism, then he falls under the influence of D. H. Lawrence in what is called the Lawrencian interlude and finally, he comes back to mysticism, retracing the path he once followed. His early novels, such as Crome Yellow (1921), Antic Hay (1923) and Those Barren Leaves (1925), show the ironic, sceptic and real nature of Huxley in his first phase. After having lost all faith in humanity after the Great War in 1914, he found the solution for his despair in philosophical mysticism : we must be free from the body, the intellect and the personality. This doctrine is particularly present in the latter novel mentioned, in which the character Calamy takes the decision of living a hermit s life of meditation in the Italian mountains. ...
