LEARNING OUTCOMES:
 At the end of this lesson, the students should be able to:
-Gain familiarity of the different discoveries during the different
periods.
-Learn different inventions and discoveries during electro-
mechanical age that lead to the inventions of today’s technology.
-Identify different technologies and their improvements during the
different generations.
z
HISTORY OF COMPUTER: BASIC
COMPUTING PERIOD
 The history of computers spans over 200 years,
starting with primitive designs in the 19th century and
evolving into more complex machines in the 20th
century. Today, computers are almost unrecognizable
from 19th-century designs like Charles Babbage’s
Analytical Engine or 20th-century giants like the
Electronic Numerical Integrator and Calculator.
z
DEFINITION OF COMPUTER
 Computer is a programmable machine.
 Computer is an electronic device that manipulates information,
or data. It has theability tostore, retrieve, and process data.
 Computer is a machine that manipulates data according to a
list of instructions(program).
 Computer is any device which aids humans in performing
various kinds ofcomputations orcalculations.
z
THREE (3) PRINCIPAL
CHARACTERISTICS OF COMPUTER:
 It responds to a specific set of instructions in a
well-defined manner.
 It can execute a pre-recorded list of instructions.
 It can quickly store and retrieve large amounts of
data.
z Applications of ICT

access audio-visual packages,
interactive exercises, remote learning,
tutoring, access educational
information, monitor performance,
create projects, and assignments.
z
3. HEALTHCARE
Computers revolutionize healthcare by
digitizing medical information, enabling
easier patient data storage and analysis,
controlling lab equipment, and enabling
doctors to access latest drug information
and share disease information with other
medical specialists.
z
4. RETAIL AND TRADE
Computers enable online shopping,
selling, and direct trading through
platforms like eBay, Craigslist, and social
media, allowing sellers to reach a wider
market with low overheads.
z
5. GOVERNMENT
Computers are utilized by
government departments like city
planning, law enforcement, traffic, and
tourism for information storage,
promotion, communication, and
administrative purposes.
z
6. MARKETING
Computers enhance marketing
campaigns by analyzing and manipulating
data, creating websites, promotional
materials, and generating social media
campaigns, while also facilitating direct
customer communication through email
and online chat.
z
7. SCIENCE
Scientists pioneered the use of
computers in science, utilizing them
for research, data collection, and
advanced technology operations,
including spacecraft launch and
control.
z
8. PUBLISHING
Computers are utilized in designing
various publications, including newsletters,
marketing materials, fashion magazines,
novels, newspapers, hard-copy and e-
books, and marketing publications to track
sales.
z
9. ARTS AND
ENTERTAINMENT
Computers are utilized in various arts
and entertainment industries for various
tasks such as creating drawings, editing
photographs, writing, making music,
watching videos, and playing games,
among others.
10. COMMUNICATION
Computers enable real-time internet
communication through software and
videoconferencing services like Skype,
enabling remote meetings, family
connections, and news interviews. Modern
computers have built-in microphones and
webcams, while older technologies remain
widely used.
