This report has been conducted on the East Asia region based on the information
provided by the universities of Kansas State and Massey. The focus of this report is
to identify and describe important characteristics, issues and trends of the region from
an agricultural perspective. To provide an introduction and insight first a brief
summary of East Asiawill be provided.
East Asia includes approximately 15 countries, within this there is a population of
1.974 billion people. Of the total population 51% live within rural areas resulting
in agriculture making up 11% of GDP, which is considerably more than the likes of
the US (1% of GDP). There is considerable diversity between countries within East
Asia. There are major differences between country s GDP per capita and economic
development, resulting in distinctive high, middle and low per capita GDP groups
as shown in figure 1. New Zealand in comparison would be in the high per capita
group with a GDP of $36,200. The East Asia countries in which agriculture makes
up largest proportion of their GDP are within the lower to middle GDP band and are
Vietnam with 22%, Indonesia with 15% and Thailand with 12%. Whereas in
comparison to the likes of Japan who has the highest GDP per capita within the

. Through the analogy we can feel the intensity that Paul experiences while he is on
the rocking horse. Lawrence uses the eyes to show Paul s excitement when he gets
to attend the races. The phrase [h]is eyes were blue fire (972) illustrates the wild
wonder in which he observed the actual race and eyes blazing (972) shows the
thrill he experienced from winning money at these races. As the boy describes to
his Uncle Oscar the way that the voice of the house speaks to him, his eyes [have]
an uncanny cold fire in them (975) which depicts the passionate and intense
feelings that he experiences. When the boy becomes obsessed with winning
money, the eyes show his mania. After Lincoln loses the race and Paul loses fifty
pounds, he [becomes] wild eyed and strange, as if something were going to
explode inside of him (976). This change that occurs in Paul s eyes immediately

Whale Rider is an expressive, cultural drama film by the award winning director
Nikola Jean Niki Caro, that explores the ideas of love, rejection, tradition and
gender roles. It s a story about a young Maori girl, Paikea Apirana that s born into
the chief line along with a twin brother. With her twin brother dying moments after
birth, only Paikea was left to fulfil the role of heir, though Koro, the current chief and
Pai s grandpa refuses as does their culture and religion. Throughout the filmthe
director utilises a variety of techniques including costuming, symbolism and
characterisation to portray Pai s strength in leadershipand personality over the male
characters in the film.
Throughout the film the director uses symbolism and costuming to show Pai s
strengths and leadership qualities. A reoccurring example of this is, in many of
scenes in which Pai is leading, developing and/or challenging someone she is
wearing the colour red. She wears a red t shirt when she retrieves the whale tooth,
when she defeats hemi with the taiha, when she leads the traditional songs, and also
when she beats the school bus on her bike. This is a very subtle use of symbolism
that the director has implemented, that many casual viewers wouldn t pick up on,
but it is a great use of film techniques as not only does it display and symbolise her
strength, leadership and overall ability, it depicts a part of her personality, that

This article discusses compares disability theory and feminist theory of women s
bodies. Garland Thomson states, ...to fully understand the social construction of
women s bodies we must also examine the impact of disability and social reactions to
it (Garland Thomson, 86). The idea for this article is to uncover the similarities about
disability and the womans body and to understand that both have been socially
constructed to divide and add levels of stereotypes to them. Looking at the aspect in
which women s bodies are being mistreated, shunned, and stereotyped, there is a

I was intrigued as to how the author would correlate both topics. I never really
realized how much women s bodies are truly idealized. On the most basic level I
understand how women s bodies are being mistreated, but not to this extent. Then
making the parallels to disabled bodies, I am amazed. Looking at the Saartje
Bartmann example, I see a different stereotype. During this era, the African
American woman s body has been sexualized now. Bartmann was sexualized, but
more so taunted than celebrated. Now I see that women of all cultures are starting
to follow the trend of being curvier to appeal to men. Almost as if Saartje body
image is coming back but in a more acceptable today. While reading, I wondered
how would this society be if people did not cultural appropriate the black culture and
turn the image of the Bartmann s body into something to be adored? Also, what
would happen if women and disabled bodies fight the stereotypes placed on them by
