Mercury Drug began from a bottle of sulfathiazole,
which was considered a wonder drug after World War
II.

In 1945, following the liberation of Manila
from Japanese occupation, Mariano Que, a
former drugstore employee, observed the
scarcity and high cost of medicines in the
devastated city. Recognizing the need, he
ventured to Bambang St., where a peddler
sold sulfathiazole, a perceived 'wonder
drug.'
Despite having only P100, Que negotiated
with the peddler and acquired the medicine.
He then sold it in smaller quantities, making it
more affordable, and gradually expanded his
business by purchasing additional medicines
and a pushcart.

From these humble beginnings, the first Mercury Drug
store opened on March 1, 1945 in Bambang St.
