The Importance Of Minority Status In America
Minority status has long since been viewed in a not so positive light. From the reflex many people
have to lock their doors when they see a homeless person or a person of color, to stereotyping and
assumptions based on institutionalized racism, to discrimination, minority status has a part to play in
all of it. Similarly, many people have the idea that deaf people cannot do anything for themselves
because they are disabled . Even though America was once hailed as a melting pot because of the
diversity of its citizens, things like you re in America now, speak English are said in today s America.
While being defined as a minority isn t inherently bad, it has become an excuse for some members of
the majority to treat minorities as second class citizens. People of color have been persecuted in this
country since it was discovered by Christopher Columbus. Starting with the genocide of the Native
Americans, the slavery of African Americans, continuing into the institutionalized racism that exists to
this day. For generations, people have used their mixed race backgrounds to gain advantages in
society. Many of those who were half black, for instance, passed for white to avoid discrimination
(Hu, 2012). While race is clearly not the definition of one s character, many people, even members of
the same minority group often look at only negative stereotypes when meeting a person. In my
personal experience, I have been told by people of multiple races that I could pass for

The Plight Of Homelessness During The Great Depression Of...
The plight of homelessness is increasing expeditiously everyday. Despite the work of professional
groups working together for the common goal of ridding America of this embarrassment. The
economy and the housing market spiraling downward aids in this continuous social issue. Actually,
homelessness is just the surface of all the different issue that lie beneath. What is homelessness?
According to Chatham Savannah Authority for the Homeless it is define as:
Resident in place not meant for human habitation
Resident in an emergency shelter
Resident in transitional or supportive housing
Residing in any of the above but spending up to 30 days in a hospital or other institution

When you study the Maslow hierarchy, a person would need the basic necessities before reaching self
esteem, esteem of others, achievement, recognition, and dignity. These are the items that a homeless
person lack when they don t have the physiological needs, and safety needs; your basics such as food,
water, shelter and fresh clothing. Maslow believed that anyone can achieve if their basic needs are
met. When you have a home it brings about safety, a place where one can go to get away from the
cares of this world, a place of refuge. Having a home protects you from the cold, rain and snow.
Maslow states Human life will never be understood unless its highest aspirations are taken into
account. Growth, self actualization, the striving toward health, the quest for identity and autonomy, the
yearning for excellence (and other ways of phrasing the striving upward) must by now be accepted
beyond question as a widespread and perhaps, universal human tendency. (Maslow) Over years of
research many individuals are homeless due to medical issues, mental illness, loss of employment,
drug abuse, many have criminal history, and the

Etymology and Symbolism of Characters Names in Catcher in...
The Etymology and Symbolism of Characters Names in Catcher in the Rye
Catcher in the Rye s pallid cover, adorned only with seven multicolored bands in its upper left corner,
is not what one would call eye catching. Its reverse side lacks criticisms or reviews of any sort; in fact,
it is bare of anything except a copyright date. Human beings are advised not to judge books by their
covers, rather that they should look further than the obvious and try to apprehend the implied
meaning. The world has peered past Catcher in the Rye s cover, cracked its pure, uniform shell of
cardboard and discovered the novel of a decade, a story that has now made the name Holden Caulfield
synonymous with cynical adolescent. Within the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He is Holden back, not allowing himself to become a part of the ugliness he sees in virtually everyone.
Chains of contempt for the world act as manacles that secure his superior attitude and ensure he will
not become what he hates. The name Holden flawlessly portrays his inability to join society because
of his high ideals for it. Caulfield, his last name, relates to recurring theme of childhood innocence. A
caul is defined as a part of the amnion, one of the membranes enveloping the fetus, which sometimes
is around the head of a child at its birth. The caul protects young children, just as Holden dreams to do
when he tells Phoebe his ideal profession would be the catcher in the field of rye. Of course, the
second section of his last name represents the field of rye. The few instants when Holden is genuinely
happy and unaffected by his painful awakenings to the adult world deal with children, because he feels
they are uncorrupted. Walking down the street in New York, Holden s rusted manacles of almost
perpetual depression are unlocked when he sees a little boy singing if a body catch a body coming
through the rye. He criticizes his father, saying he wanted to appear sharp with the ratty hat he was
wearing, and says neither parent was paying any attention to their son. He feels any adult has been
demoralized, but will go to great lengths to come into any contact with a child. His perfect job, the

Soma And Agni Essay
Since the earlier mythological times, Soma has always been taken as a plant whose extracts were used
as a sacred intoxicating drink of the gods. But according to the Vedas it is a creator, and aids in
sustenance of a living being. It takes various forms and sizes to keep the life cycle in motion. Since
recent past researches Soma has becomes a string for the Vedic connections across different
civilization while maintaining the same sacred importance. Soma with Agni have played a pivotal role
in creation at different levels of the cosmos. Both Soma and Agni are also responsible for

Agni is within Soma , and Soma rises after Agni for its sustenance. As said above, Soma is existent in
all these regions, similarly, Agni pervades all the three regions in forms of Aditya (sun), Vidyut
(lightning) and Agni (fire). Soma absorbed by sun rays ascends to the atmospheric region , where it
couples with Agni (the fire principle). It is this merging of Soma and Agni that results in the formation
of the rains in turn. Agni Soma along with Vayu make the tri dosha (Humours) of Ayurveda which
govern the physio pathology of the living body. Vayu is the factor of movement which assists in their
normal functions, Life is, in fact, equilibrium of agni and Soma. The lamp is an ideal replica of this
combination which burns till there is equilibrium of agni (flame) and Soma (oil). Disturbance in any
of them results in extinction of the lamp. Yajna (sacrifice) is again the similar symbol of the life
process governed by the proper combination of agni and Soma and hence there is a mention of
mythical Soma sacrifice ritual. Sacrificial fire is the symbol of digestive fire to which Soma is offered

Ron Rash Local Color Analysis
Poetry has always been a way of expressing emotions about life experiences. Poetry allows us to use
symbolism to express ideas without the use of proper language. Things like our feelings about local
scenery and culture can be expressed in symbols and imagery. One example of this, Ron Rash s poem
Local Color , explores the concepts of place and identity and suggests they are intertwined. Examples
of how place and identity are intertwined are shown in the grandfather s identity as a regular at the
local bar, the grandmother s identity as a homemaker and wife at home, and the idea that by going to
the church the grandfather was going to change his identity. First, the main thrust of this poem is about
how after a long day of work the grandfather ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This change of location is implied to change his entire identity as a new man . But, really it did not
change him at all and because he went back to his old ways. You pretend to be someone you really are
not and when you sober up nine times out of ten you will go back to the way you were before. Unless,
you are serious about changing. Unfortunately, in the grandfather s case, he was not serious enough
about changing. The truth is he was just a drunk man committing an old sin over and over. He did not
care enough and he just went back to his old ways. That is exactly what happened in Local Color ,
While my grandfather swore he d alter his life, / give up the drinking, go to church twice a week. / He
was contrite and seemed to have changed. / He was a new man, for a few days. / But by Saturday, he
was at it again. (32 35) Generally, people would go to alcoholism groups to get better but as the
Appalachian newsgroup says Appalachian people share a religious world view, even those members
without religious beliefs. Because of this religious view, Appalachian people look upon some
behaviors, such as alcoholism, as sin even though they are intellectually aware that such behaviors are
a form of mental illness. ( Appalachia: Is It a Region or Culture? , web) Because of this religious view
in the area the Grandfather decides to go to church to be reformed instead of going to Alcoholism

1927 U.S. Supreme Court case of Buck v. Bell

July 9, 2013
The Buck v. Bell case began when Carrie Buck was seventeen and claimed that she was raped by J.T.
and Alice Dobbs son and turn out to be pregnant. So when that happened a test revealed that Carrie
had da mind of a nine year old which was consider being feeblemindedness. Her mother was also
tested and considered to be feeblemindedness because her test revealed that she had the mind of an
eight year old. Carrie and her mother were sent to the Colony for the Epileptic and Feebleminded

Carrie s baby was only eight month old when they claimed that she was not a normal baby due to the
fact that Carrie and her mother were feebleminded. Dr. Priddy believed that if they were to let Carrie
be sterilized then it would most likely remove more feebleminded offspring s which can decrease her
chance of having a feebleminded baby (Buck v. Bell, 2006).
Carrie s lawyer Irving Whitehead did not make any justification for Carrie knowing that she was a
church girl going every day and had no problems in school. Even though he would have the chance to
represent Carrie in the higher courts, he would be on Dr. Priddy s and Aubrey Strode side because he
sees the same effects as them. They fought to request the case through many courts expecting to get all
the support that they can for the sterilization law (Buck v. Bell, 2006).
Later the Circuit Court had supported the law and filed for the sterilization of Carrie. In 1925 Carrie s
lawyer Irving Whitehead supported the decision of the Circuit Court at the Supreme Court of Appeals
of the State of Virginia. So after all of this Dr. Priddy had passed away in which Dr. J.H. Bell had
replaced him at the Colony. The case now became Buck v. Bell; Dr. Bell had sterilized Carrie in 1927
which then was released from the Colony (Buck v. Bell, 2006).
Carries lawyer then made the move to take it to the U.S Supreme Court which he claimed that Carrie

The Role Of The President-Elect
When running for President of the United States and actually being elected as President for the United
States, the President faces much hardship. All the campaign promises he has made to the public to
ensure change and better living, he now has to hold his word to, or at least try his best. In addition,
they need to go off their predecessor s example and fix or even completely change what they have
established. The Founding Fathers of the original thirteen colonies had a smaller role for the President,
but it gradually grew. At first the President was limited to defending the country when prone to
attacks, enforcing our laws and had to follow the constitution. However, as time progressed, he was
granted more powers. The President was soon allowed to become the nation s spokesman, lead us into
the free word and take a lead on foreign policy. President Barack Obama was elected in 2008, as our

On average humans produce around 4.3 pounds of trash per day ( Municipal Solid Waste ). With 7
billion people and counting the amount of trash being generated is increasing ( United States Census ).
All of our bottles, wrappers and food is being thrown away and entering our landfills. Landfills are
man made structures that are carefully designed to separate trash, we produce, from other land areas.
These structures are made so that the trash and the byproducts of it do not contaminate groundwater or
the environment around it ( Learn about Landfills ). Some ways that individuals can reduce the
amount of trash that ends up in landfills is to recycle, donate, reduce food waste, and purchase
materials with less packaging ( 15 Easy Ways ). It ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

after years of dumping waste in it. So in the late 1950 s, approximately one hundred homes and a

To Build The Wall
To Build Or Not To Build The Wall. My opinion is that we should build a wall, what is yours? The
reason I am in favor of the wall is because 12 million immigrants cross the border every year illegally.
Doesn t the wall mean that we will start a bad relationship with Mexico? No, they should realize that
there people are just pouring in America so a wall means that we would have an extra line of defense.
In a year 12 million illegal immigrants would come here from Mexico and they could be brining guns/
drugs. Do you really want that in America. We should build the wall because the positives out way the
negatives. We will be stopping drugs and guns if we put up that wall. The illegal immigrants could be
caring drugs when the cross the border. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
My first reason is that a presidential candidate wants the wall to go up. I quote that I chose is, I ve
been leading the fight in the Senate to triple the Border Patrol, to put in place fencings and walls, to
put in place a strong biometric exit/entry system (Ted Cruz). If you are a person running for president,
you don t want to do and say stupid stuff. Having said Ted still said that he would be in favor of the
wall because he realizes that these illegal immigrants need to be stopped and have them come over
legally. My second reason is governors are also in favor of the wall. The quote I chose is, As noted in
Immigration Wars, fencing is a component of border security. When combined with surveillance
technology and agents to detect and respond to crossings, fencing or other barriers can serve several
purposes, including: (1) deterring illegal entries by making it more difficult to cross the border, (2)
facilitating enforcement by increasing the time available to respond and apprehend people, and (3)
steering dangerous criminals and traffickers away from populated areas, improving public safety.
Sufficient funding should be provided to maintain, improve, and expand fences where appropriate
(e.g., based on the terrain along the border or the proximity of populated areas) (Jeb Bush). What this
is saying is that to actually really stop these immigrants and dangerous criminals, we need something
other than just the border patrol and that something is the wall. It will only help America. Just because
the media says its bad, is it really? Do you always agree with stuff on TV and the

An Analysis Of Donald Trump s Politics And The English...
Political press can play such crucial role in the viewpoints of citizens; with an impact like this, it is
essential to have explicit information. George Orwell s 1946 essay Politics and the English Language
he argues that Politicians have manipulated the English language, thus making their points
euphemistic. He explains that, ...it is broadly true that political writing is bad writing and results to a
politician being unconscious of what he is saying (Orwell). Even though this essay was written in
1946, Orwell s six basic rules are still broken. For instance, Donald Trump s immigration speech is
prime example of what Orwell would conclude as nonsense . The speech breaks the elementary rules
by using unfamiliar phrases, exclusive jargons, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Orwell does not agree with this technique; he strongly emphasizes to Never use a metaphor, simile, or
other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print (Orwell). Trump incorporates the phrase, I

immigrants; however, Orwell includes the key idea that, A newly invented metaphor assists thought by
evoking a visual image, while on the other hand a metaphor which is technically dead (Orwell).
Metaphors have been constantly twisted to aid a concept that the speaker or writer is trying to make
clear. This leads to the politician, inventing phrases for themselves (Orwell). Another metaphor Trump
presents in his speech is We re like the big bully that keeps getting beat up (Trump). This metaphor is
a key example of what Orwell would deduce as pieces of clumsiness . Adding in metaphors can save
effort, yet only benefits the speaker and not the listener. Behind this twisted phrasing, it makes the
Politician look like he is not initially interested in what he is saying. Orwell stresses strongly, that
metaphors are used to created imagery but in this case it causes

The Tamil Refugees at Victoria, British Columbia Essay
On October 17, 2009, seventy six Tamil refugees arrived off the cost of Victoria, British Columbia in a
rusty boat followed by another four hundred ninety two exhausted Sri Lankan Tamil asylum seekers in
August 2010 (CBC News, 2010; Bauder Bradimore, 2011). Their migration stemmed from the civil
war that had been ongoing in their homeland for over two decades. Human rights agencies and media
around the world raised concerns over human rights violations, and death of tens of thousands of
innocent civilians in Sri Lanka. Canadians, those of Tamil ethnicity and otherwise, were concerned,

However, concurrent to those accepting declarations, claimsmaking activities by the Canadian
government, especially by Public Safety Minister Vic Toews contributed to the social construction of a
negative portrayal of the Tamil refugees, shaping their image as illegal migrants who are trying to take
advantage of a generous nation like Canada. Declarations by Toews and other government spokesmen
that the country s laws will have to be stricter to prevent boatloads of desperate people fleeing
persecution and poverty from seeking refuge in Canada constructed a public image that these Tamil
refugees were illegitimate and thus not qualified to get support from Canada (Jones, 2010). They also
repeatedly said that the boat s voyage to Canada was likely organized by the Liberation Tigers of
Tamil Eelam with the aim of infiltrating terrorists into Canada and raising funds. These bold
statements further guided the public to believe that the refugees were closely linked to terrorist
organizations and that accepting them could become a national security predicament (CBC News,
2010). Government spokesmen continued to frame the arrival of refugees as a risk, a practice that was
continually repeated and strengthened through media reporting.

Effects Of Poe s Single Effect On The Black Cat
Edgar Allen Poe has many standards that helped lay the ground work to his single effect of a short
story. He thought short stories ought to be able to be read at one sitting. This allows the reader to get
the entire effect of the story at one time, rather than having to stop reading the story and having to
recapture the feeling of the story after returning. In writing, he attempted to try to and capture a
unifying emotion; the emotion of horror. He felt that the effect of the story should be obvious to
everyone who reads the story. Poe s single effect was attended to show human behavior; to see how
human reactions would be if these stories actually occurred.

Becoming A Fashion Retail Buyer Essay

express myself through this medium and eventually I plan on becoming a fashion retail buyer myself.
Also, I want to be involved in promoting campaigns and advertisements for the newest trends. One of
the many highlights of this job is being able to travel to different states and even countries to attend
trade fairs as well as visit certain suppliers. As a retail buyer, the buyer is responsible for selecting
products up to date with trends and to sell them in retail shops. To become a fashion buyer one must
attain a 2 4 year college degree. Along with this, when attending college a student should major in
either business, marketing, or merchandising. Although internships are not required, except for certain
particular business classes or programs, interning could possibly benefit someone to achieve the
highest potential in their job. While training a person needs to learn the knowledge of fashion, retail,
and economics. I would imagine that one must have first hand experience in retail, which I would
assume helps the person train for the job. The company s I seek interest in are higher end boutiques

In the year 1803, the United States government through the Louisiana Purchase Agreement agreed to
expand its territories by the acquisition of Louisiana from the French government. At the
aforementioned period, the French led by Napoleon had control over the territory and all the resources
that fell under the territory. Presided over during the Thomas Jefferson administration, the deal cost
the United States a whopping fifty million Francs. However, it is important to understand that the
Louisiana agreement was a step towards the right direction in placing the United States as an
international economic hub then and today. The agreement idea was crafted by Thomas Jefferson who
believed in the idea that expansion of the newly formed United States territories would give it an
upper hand politically and economically. During that period, the Mississippi River was a viable spot
that many nations sought to have control over. The river formed a passage to the Atlantic Ocean in
which the United States would be linked to other worlds such as Europe, Asia and Africa.
To be exact, Thomas Jefferson appealed for the purchase of Louisiana since the port of New Orleans
was a viable spot that linked the United States to the outside world. It should be clear that the
agreement has brought more good and harm and is the main reason as to why the United States is a
major economic hub. After acquisition of Louisiana, the United States exports and imports increased
drastically. With the

Research Paper About An Event That Changed My Life
A lot of people experience events that change their lives; some are more difficult to deal with. An
event that changed my life was moving from Pennsylvania to New Jersey. I lived I Pennsylvania for
11 years after my parents split up. I have currently been living in New Jersey with my dad for about 2

Analysis Of Charge Of The Light Brigade
Good morning and welcome back, to Poetry and Society, lesson 5. In today s lesson we will be
exploring the attitudes and morals portrayed in the poem Charge of the Light Brigade written by
Alfred Lord Tennyson; through the literary devices, themes and form, and how they are relevant to the
Crimean War.
Alfred Lord Tennyson, is a renowned British poet from the Victorian Era. Loving books as a little kid,
lead to him to writing a 6000 lined epic poem at the age of 12. Since that age he continued to write
poems and soon enough in 1850 became the most popular poet in the Victorian Era. Two years later
the Crimean war broke out between the Russians and the British. Tennyson, intrigued by the war,
decided to write about the famous Battle of Balaclava; where the British Cavalry had in fact attacked
the wrong unit whilst in battle. This lead to his most famous poem Charge of the Light Brigade, which
informed both people at the time and people now of the mistake the British made.
The Crimean war, an attack of the British attempting to take over land in Ukraine on the Crimean
Peninsula. War at the time was used to unify a nation, as well as inform other countries of the potential
and status of one s country. Britain at the time was slowly expanding out to countries, owning 33
countries at the time. Britain was considered quite patriotic under the ruling of Queen Victoria, men
that went out to fight in the war were doing it purely for their country, and nothing more. This lead

The Impact Of Income Inequality On Economic Growth
LITERATURE REVIEW The impact of Income Inequality on Economic Growth: A Case study on
Nigeria Student Number: P14173106 Supervisor: Helen Solomon Module Leader: Helen Solomon
Date: 26th November 2016 Word Count: 1.0 Introduction According to Adam Smith (1776) in his
book the wealth of nations, no society can surely be flourishing and happy, of which the far greater
part of the members are poor and miserable . Economic growth and income inequality are central inter
related facets that explain current trend in global issues. Oxfam (2016) suggested that 62 of the richest
people have the same wealth as the 3.6 billion poorest people. The rich continue to acquire wealth,
while the poor struggle for basic things required for survival like food, access to clean water and
shelter. The research question proposed is: Does income inequality have an impact on economic
growth? . This chapter highlights the key concepts and notions which underlie the subject matter of
the study in order to provide an ideal frame for understanding the relationship between income
inequality and economic growth and answering the research question. It will also look at previous
empirical studies carried out by other researchers in this field and identify gaps in the existing
literature. 2.0 Theoretical Framework and Empirical Evidence Inequality is generally referred to unfair
distribution of resource among individuals. Inequality can vary from income, health, gender and
wealth.

Black Hat Or Devil s Advocate Process
Black Hat or Devil s Advocate Process
The best solution to the dissatisfaction that is caused when a title is held and not sent to the payoff
dealer in a timely manner is to create a dealer notification process. This process will consist of
contacting the dealer by phone, email or fax to notify them of the accounts that have a title on hold for
missing odometer statement. The solution should be implemented because it is quick to implement,
will have a low cost to implement and will have a big impact on the issue. If the dealers are notified as
soon as the title is placed on hold they can fax or email the odometer to the Title Services and Support
department immediately. The Title Services and Support department will be able to deliver the title to
the dealer a timely manner.
If this solution is implemented one impact that could go wrong is that the dealers could become
frustrated with BMW Financial Services if the Title Services and Support department does not notify
them of an account that is on hold or the dealer could become frustrated if the Title Services and
Support department contacts them to many times about an account that is on hold. A weakness and
risk of the solution are keeping the BMW dealer group contact information up to date. The Title
Services and Support department will need to be in constant communication with the BMW Group
dealers to ensure they are calling, emailing or faxing the request for odometer statements to the correct
contact.

Anatomy Of Epidemics
Editions are being revised, diagnoses are increasing, yet the behavior of Americans seems to be
remaining the same. In no math class do those things add up. The discrepancy does not lie in the math,
it lies within outside influences. As the number of possible diagnosable mental disorders increases, so
does the amount of mentally ill Americans. Pathologizing the normal and increased pharmaceutical
use has led to widespread increase of incorrect mental illness diagnosis. The Diagnostic and Statistical
Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) as defined by the American Psychiatric Association is the
standard classification of mental disorders used by mental health professionals in the United States

To this day no scientific tests have been done to support the existence of ADHD. As it stands the
diagnostic criteria for Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder are essentially reflective of normal
childhood behavior. The behaviors that someone needs to elicit in order to be categorized with
attention deficit hyperactive disorder, include behaviors such as: often has difficulties organizing tasks
and activities ; often avoids, dislikes, or is reluctant to engage in tasks that require sustained mental
effort ; often loses things necessary for tasks or activities ; is often on the go ; often talks excessively ;
and often interrupts or intrudes on others (American Psychiatric Association, 2014). These criteria for
ADHD are found in most children but not all children have Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder.
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders has taken normal behaviors of a child and
reclassified them to be characterized into a disorder. If psychiatry was against pathologizing normal
behavior then disorders like ADHD which are essentially just descriptions of normal childhood
behavior would be eliminated. Children would therefore be put on medication less often and therefore
would lead to less serious disorders based off of the findings of Whitaker. Attention Deficit
Hyperactive Disorder is

Dostoevsky Notes From Underground Summary
In Dostoevsky s Notes from Underground, the Underground Man proposes a radically different
conception for his time. From history, human beings do not always do what is best in their own
interests. Instead of a safe and securable outcome, they often risk their lives and search for something
different from the simple path of one s own interest. There must then be an urge that opposes all
human interests. The Underground Man lists the human advantages usually referred to by the liberals:
peace, prosperity, wealth, and freedom. Nevertheless, tt is clear that human beings have in the past
often taken action that seems to go contrary to all these interests. Even if all human advantages were
put together in a table of advantages, there would be something that could not be placed in this table
because it opposes all the other interests in it. This one advantage that opposes all other human
advantages is free will but not any old free will. It is free will that rejects the notion of reason and
proceeds without it.
As the Underground Man sees it, if one acts always in accord with reason and towards the
achievement of specific goals, one never has a chance to exercise one s free will. In the utopian ideal,
everyone always knows exactly what action they should take that would be in their best interest. There
is never a real choice of actions since, given two actions, there is only one that can rationally be taken.
In this way, being enlightened as to one s real interests and being rational deprives one of choice. The
only way to really be free is to exercise the option that is not rational, to do something contrary to one
s own interest. Though it seems like it would be stupid to do something that is not advantageous, this
is the only way that one can exercise one s individuality. This is supported by The Underground Man s
statement, Consciously... their real interests, have left them in the background... compelled to this
course by... simply disliking the beaten track. (Dostoevsky, 27). Here, human beings would
intentionally abandon logic to assert their free will and abandon their better judgement just for the
sake of separating themselves from those around others. The creation of personal identity is so
important that human

This paper will define the treatment of prisons within the United States, Central America and Africa, it
will explain how many of these countries human rights and due process are violated within the
correctional system, it will further exam how inmates under the supervision of correctional staff treat
inmates while they are incarcerated by not allowing them the due process that they are required to
have. Finally, this paper will also analyze cruel and unusual punishment these inmates receive while
under the supervision of correctional staff.

incarcerates inmates throughout the world, the United States incarcerates inmates juveniles, women
and men for crimes that are both non violent as well as violent crimes, by incarcerating these inmates

In the past females have achieved less well than boys at higher levels in the education system, then
during the 1990 , the girls over took boys at all levels in the education system. The percentage of
females in the UK achieving two or more A levels or equivalent has increased from 20% in 1990 to
42% in 2006. Over the same time period, the percentage of males achieving the same level increased
from 18% to 33%. On the other hand, there still continues to be a large difference in the choice of
subjects by males and females. Even with the national curriculum being restrictive in the lower levels,
meaning both male and females do the same subjects, when they get to a levels and degree level, both
male and females still tend to choose different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, its argued that the improvement of females in education could be the result of the decline of
males, therefore making the gap between gender differences not that significant.
Secondly, the interaction between teachers and male and female students. Sociologist Francis (2000)
argues that classrooms are still male dominated and that boys are disciplined more frequently and
harshly by teachers compared to girls. Therefore, it is seen that boys get more attention than girls as
they are disciplined more harshly than girls, leading to girls getting less attention than boys, also in
terms of ethnicity, boys from African Caribbean backgrounds are also more likely to be disciplined
than white British boys. This may result in boys feeling picked on in school which may result in
gender and ethnic differences in achievement.
On the other hand, many sociologists have argued the importance of external factors in influencing
gender differences in achievement. Feminism strives for equality in society for men and women and
has questioned the typical role of males and females in society and challenges the role of women
being the housewife. Feminists have had a great influence on improving girls self esteem and
aspirations. Sue Sharpe s

How To Build A Snowman Essay
The Snowman It was a frigid day in December. I wore so many clothes that I looked like a penguin.
Every breath I took makes a small cloud and scattered. The gloves I worn seemed to be mildness like
paws. The buildings behind me were covered by the thick snow. The wall became more brick red
because of the spotless white snow. Some snowflakes drift down on my hair gently. The snow was
heavy, but not much wind. My friends bounced from worm house and laughed to me. We should build
a snowman. The snow is heavy enough. One of my friends advised. We all cheered and started to pile
the snow together. It s not a hard job for us to build a lovely snowman. I splashed some water on

Flowers Symbolism In To Kill A Mockingbird
Flowers are an ongoing symbol in Harper Lee s novel To Kill a Mockingbird. They are used to relate
to or represent many of the characters all through the novel. The use of symbolism throughout this
work of fiction is essential because it gives a deeper understanding of the characters. Mayella Ewell
and the red geranium, Miss Maudie and her azaleas, Miss Dubose and her camellias, and Mayella
Ewell and the violet are four major uses of symbolism in the story. One use of symbolism in the novel
is when Mayella Ewell is compared to the red geranium. One corner of the yard, though, bewildered
Maycomb. Against the fence, in a line, were six chipped enamel slop jars holding brilliant geraniums,
cared for as tenderly as if they belonged to Miss Maudie Atkinson, had Miss Maudie deigned to
permit a geranium on her premises. People said they were Mayella Ewell s (pg. 194). Known as the
poor man s rose, the red geranium symbolizes gentility. The flowers growing in the filthy jars
represent Mayella and the conditions she lived in. Mayella was a young girl that was living a terrible
life and had no form of beauty in her life. Attending to those flowers had finally gave Mayella a form
of beauty and hope. They showed Mayella that underneath the ugly and unappealing, there is still
beauty. Another form of symbolism is when Miss Maudie is compared to her azaleas. Miss Maudie
hated her house: time spent indoors was time wasted. She was a widow, a chameleon lady who

Role of Women in Persepolis
In the book, The Complete Persepolis written by Marjane Satrapi every woman had a prescribed role.
The role of Marji s maid was to show that social class differences do exist and to show what happens
within these social class differences. Marji s mother s role was to support Marji and make sure that she
was well off, while her grandmother s role was also to support her and give her words of wisdom. Her
school teachers role was to make sure that the female children, attending the school, wore their veils,

There are many ways in which Iranian cultural expectations are different from the western cultural
expectations. They are different in regards to citizens rights and gender norms.
According to Farhad Kazemi article in the Iran Chamber Society, an important difference between the
Islamic world and the West in regard to citizenship rights is how these rights are formally categorized.
In the West, non gender based citizenship is the norm, even though in practice, full and complete
citizenship rights and equality are not always the case. In the Islamic world, however, the norm is to
grant different categories of people different citizenship rights. Hence, women and religious minorities
enjoy a different category of citizenship rights than males and Muslims.
The picture on the next page illustrates how in the Islamic world, the norm is to grant different
categories of people different citizenship rights. This is a picture of Marji and her family eat at one
table and her maid eating at another. Because her maid is on a lower class level than Marji and her
family, she didn t had the right or may I say she couldn t eat on the same table as them. Because of this
she didn t have the same amount of equality and citizenship rights as Marji and her family.
Relating to gender norms, Iranians view women s hair as erotic,

The Importance Of Cognitive Development In Willy Wonka And...
Childhood, as we all know, is the state or period of being a child; the early period in the development
of something (Merriam Webster). The movie Willy Wonka the Chocolate Factory (1971) illustrates
five different children with each having different behavior, and they have one thing in common they
are the only child in their family. These children are in the middle childhood, primary school age,
around age seven or eight. What makes them different from each other is interesting. It allows the
viewers to think if their behavior is either result of their experience or how they were raised. How they
perceive things and how they behave are part of their cognitive development. The major domain of
early childhood development is their cognitive development and the arguable aspects of the Nature
Nurture. The term cognition refers to how the mind operates and the study of cognitive development
focuses on how the mind thinks and learns during the early years of life (Universal Class, Inc.). The
major premise of Piaget s theory is that children go through various stages of cognitive development,
all of which are distinct from one another and influenced by both nature and nurture. (Universal Class,
Inc.). Nature is what we think of as pre wiring and is influenced by genetic inheritance and other
biological factors. Nurture is generally taken as the influence of external factors after conception, e.g.,
the product of exposure, experience and learning on an individual (Simply

Why Is Dispatch Center Important
What would happen if 911 was called, and no one answered in the middle of a serious crisis? What if
the dispatcher that answered had no idea how to help? Having an efficient dispatch center is vital to
daily law enforcement operations, public and officers safety. Why is dispatching and the dispatch

in major complications, and sometimes irreversible consequences, including someone s life. There are
various complex tasks performed on a daily basis inside a dispatch center. No single process is more
important than another, however, they all serve a specific intent, and have to be completed adequately.

Dispatchers need to be trained to evaluate calls by asking key questions of callers and reporting the

  • 2. The Importance Of Minority Status In America Minority status has long since been viewed in a not so positive light. From the reflex many people have to lock their doors when they see a homeless person or a person of color, to stereotyping and assumptions based on institutionalized racism, to discrimination, minority status has a part to play in all of it. Similarly, many people have the idea that deaf people cannot do anything for themselves because they are disabled . Even though America was once hailed as a melting pot because of the diversity of its citizens, things like you re in America now, speak English are said in today s America. While being defined as a minority isn t inherently bad, it has become an excuse for some members of the majority to treat minorities as second class citizens. People of color have been persecuted in this country since it was discovered by Christopher Columbus. Starting with the genocide of the Native Americans, the slavery of African Americans, continuing into the institutionalized racism that exists to this day. For generations, people have used their mixed race backgrounds to gain advantages in society. Many of those who were half black, for instance, passed for white to avoid discrimination (Hu, 2012). While race is clearly not the definition of one s character, many people, even members of the same minority group often look at only negative stereotypes when meeting a person. In my personal experience, I have been told by people of multiple races that I could pass for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Plight Of Homelessness During The Great Depression Of... The plight of homelessness is increasing expeditiously everyday. Despite the work of professional groups working together for the common goal of ridding America of this embarrassment. The economy and the housing market spiraling downward aids in this continuous social issue. Actually, homelessness is just the surface of all the different issue that lie beneath. What is homelessness? According to Chatham Savannah Authority for the Homeless it is define as: Resident in place not meant for human habitation Resident in an emergency shelter Resident in transitional or supportive housing Residing in any of the above but spending up to 30 days in a hospital or other institution A situation in which eviction is imminent and no subsequent ... When you study the Maslow hierarchy, a person would need the basic necessities before reaching self esteem, esteem of others, achievement, recognition, and dignity. These are the items that a homeless person lack when they don t have the physiological needs, and safety needs; your basics such as food, water, shelter and fresh clothing. Maslow believed that anyone can achieve if their basic needs are met. When you have a home it brings about safety, a place where one can go to get away from the cares of this world, a place of refuge. Having a home protects you from the cold, rain and snow. Maslow states Human life will never be understood unless its highest aspirations are taken into account. Growth, self actualization, the striving toward health, the quest for identity and autonomy, the yearning for excellence (and other ways of phrasing the striving upward) must by now be accepted beyond question as a widespread and perhaps, universal human tendency. • 4. Etymology and Symbolism of Characters Names in Catcher in... The Etymology and Symbolism of Characters Names in Catcher in the Rye Catcher in the Rye s pallid cover, adorned only with seven multicolored bands in its upper left corner, is not what one would call eye catching. Its reverse side lacks criticisms or reviews of any sort; in fact, it is bare of anything except a copyright date. Human beings are advised not to judge books by their covers, rather that they should look further than the obvious and try to apprehend the implied meaning. The world has peered past Catcher in the Rye s cover, cracked its pure, uniform shell of cardboard and discovered the novel of a decade, a story that has now made the name Holden Caulfield synonymous with cynical adolescent. Within the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He is Holden back, not allowing himself to become a part of the ugliness he sees in virtually everyone. Chains of contempt for the world act as manacles that secure his superior attitude and ensure he will not become what he hates. The name Holden flawlessly portrays his inability to join society because of his high ideals for it. Caulfield, his last name, relates to recurring theme of childhood innocence. A caul is defined as a part of the amnion, one of the membranes enveloping the fetus, which sometimes is around the head of a child at its birth. The caul protects young children, just as Holden dreams to do when he tells Phoebe his ideal profession would be the catcher in the field of rye. Of course, the second section of his last name represents the field of rye. The few instants when Holden is genuinely happy and unaffected by his painful awakenings to the adult world deal with children, because he feels they are uncorrupted. Walking down the street in New York, Holden s rusted manacles of almost perpetual depression are unlocked when he sees a little boy singing if a body catch a body coming through the rye. He criticizes his father, saying he wanted to appear sharp with the ratty hat he was wearing, and says neither parent was paying any attention to their son. He feels any adult has been demoralized, but will go to great lengths to come into any contact with a child. His perfect job, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Soma And Agni Essay Since the earlier mythological times, Soma has always been taken as a plant whose extracts were used as a sacred intoxicating drink of the gods. But according to the Vedas it is a creator, and aids in sustenance of a living being. It takes various forms and sizes to keep the life cycle in motion. Since recent past researches Soma has becomes a string for the Vedic connections across different civilization while maintaining the same sacred importance. Soma with Agni have played a pivotal role in creation at different levels of the cosmos. Both Soma and Agni are also responsible for consciousness of the mind. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Agni is within Soma , and Soma rises after Agni for its sustenance. As said above, Soma is existent in all these regions, similarly, Agni pervades all the three regions in forms of Aditya (sun), Vidyut (lightning) and Agni (fire). Soma absorbed by sun rays ascends to the atmospheric region , where it couples with Agni (the fire principle). It is this merging of Soma and Agni that results in the formation of the rains in turn. Agni Soma along with Vayu make the tri dosha (Humours) of Ayurveda which govern the physio pathology of the living body. Vayu is the factor of movement which assists in their normal functions, Life is, in fact, equilibrium of agni and Soma. The lamp is an ideal replica of this combination which burns till there is equilibrium of agni (flame) and Soma (oil). Disturbance in any of them results in extinction of the lamp. Yajna (sacrifice) is again the similar symbol of the life process governed by the proper combination of agni and Soma and hence there is a mention of mythical Soma sacrifice ritual. • 6. Ron Rash Local Color Analysis Poetry has always been a way of expressing emotions about life experiences. Poetry allows us to use symbolism to express ideas without the use of proper language. Things like our feelings about local scenery and culture can be expressed in symbols and imagery. One example of this, Ron Rash s poem Local Color , explores the concepts of place and identity and suggests they are intertwined. Examples of how place and identity are intertwined are shown in the grandfather s identity as a regular at the local bar, the grandmother s identity as a homemaker and wife at home, and the idea that by going to the church the grandfather was going to change his identity. First, the main thrust of this poem is about how after a long day of work the grandfather ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This change of location is implied to change his entire identity as a new man . But, really it did not change him at all and because he went back to his old ways. You pretend to be someone you really are not and when you sober up nine times out of ten you will go back to the way you were before. Unless, you are serious about changing. Unfortunately, in the grandfather s case, he was not serious enough about changing. The truth is he was just a drunk man committing an old sin over and over. He did not care enough and he just went back to his old ways. That is exactly what happened in Local Color , While my grandfather swore he d alter his life, / give up the drinking, go to church twice a week. / He was contrite and seemed to have changed. / He was a new man, for a few days. / But by Saturday, he was at it again. (32 35) Generally, people would go to alcoholism groups to get better but as the Appalachian newsgroup says Appalachian people share a religious world view, even those members without religious beliefs. Because of this religious view, Appalachian people look upon some behaviors, such as alcoholism, as sin even though they are intellectually aware that such behaviors are a form of mental illness. Dr. Priddy believed that if they were to let Carrie be sterilized then it would most likely remove more feebleminded offspring s which can decrease her chance of having a feebleminded baby (Buck v. Bell, 2006). Carrie s lawyer Irving Whitehead did not make any justification for Carrie knowing that she was a church girl going every day and had no problems in school. Even though he would have the chance to represent Carrie in the higher courts, he would be on Dr. Priddy s and Aubrey Strode side because he sees the same effects as them. They fought to request the case through many courts expecting to get all the support that they can for the sterilization law (Buck v. Bell, 2006). Later the Circuit Court had supported the law and filed for the sterilization of Carrie. In 1925 Carrie s lawyer Irving Whitehead supported the decision of the Circuit Court at the Supreme Court of Appeals of the State of Virginia. So after all of this Dr. Priddy had passed away in which Dr. J.H. Bell had replaced him at the Colony. The case now became Buck v. • 8. The Role Of The President-Elect When running for President of the United States and actually being elected as President for the United States, the President faces much hardship. All the campaign promises he has made to the public to ensure change and better living, he now has to hold his word to, or at least try his best. In addition, they need to go off their predecessor s example and fix or even completely change what they have established. The Founding Fathers of the original thirteen colonies had a smaller role for the President, but it gradually grew. At first the President was limited to defending the country when prone to attacks, enforcing our laws and had to follow the constitution. However, as time progressed, he was granted more powers. Sufficient funding should be provided to maintain, improve, and expand fences where appropriate (e.g., based on the terrain along the border or the proximity of populated areas) (Jeb Bush). • 26. Dostoevsky Notes From Underground Summary In Dostoevsky s Notes from Underground, the Underground Man proposes a radically different conception for his time. From history, human beings do not always do what is best in their own interests. Instead of a safe and securable outcome, they often risk their lives and search for something different from the simple path of one s own interest. There must then be an urge that opposes all human interests. The Underground Man lists the human advantages usually referred to by the liberals: peace, prosperity, wealth, and freedom. Nevertheless, tt is clear that human beings have in the past often taken action that seems to go contrary to all these interests. Even if all human advantages were put together in a table of advantages, there would be something that could not be placed in this table because it opposes all the other interests in it. This one advantage that opposes all other human advantages is free will but not any old free will. It is free will that rejects the notion of reason and proceeds without it. As the Underground Man sees it, if one acts always in accord with reason and towards the achievement of specific goals, one never has a chance to exercise one s free will. In the utopian ideal, everyone always knows exactly what action they should take that would be in their best interest. There is never a real choice of actions since, given two actions, there is only one that can rationally be taken. In this way, being enlightened as to one s real interests and being rational deprives one of choice. The only way to really be free is to exercise the option that is not rational, to do something contrary to one s own interest. Though it seems like it would be stupid to do something that is not advantageous, this is the only way that one can exercise one s individuality. This is supported by The Underground Man s statement, Consciously... their real interests, have left them in the background... compelled to this course by... simply disliking the beaten track. (Dostoevsky, 27). Here, human beings would intentionally abandon logic to assert their free will and abandon their better judgement just for the sake of separating themselves from those around others. The percentage of females in the UK achieving two or more A levels or equivalent has increased from 20% in 1990 to 42% in 2006. Over the same time period, the percentage of males achieving the same level increased from 18% to 33%. Sociologist Francis (2000) argues that classrooms are still male dominated and that boys are disciplined more frequently and harshly by teachers compared to girls. Therefore, it is seen that boys get more attention than girls as they are disciplined more harshly than girls, leading to girls getting less attention than boys, also in terms of ethnicity, boys from African Caribbean backgrounds are also more likely to be disciplined than white British boys. The gloves I worn seemed to be mildness like paws. The buildings behind me were covered by the thick snow. The wall became more brick red because of the spotless white snow. Some snowflakes drift down on my hair gently. The snow was heavy, but not much wind. My friends bounced from worm house and laughed to me. We should build a snowman. The snow is heavy enough. One of my friends advised. We all cheered and started to pile the snow together. It s not a hard job for us to build a lovely snowman. Mayella Ewell and the red geranium, Miss Maudie and her azaleas, Miss Dubose and her camellias, and Mayella Ewell and the violet are four major uses of symbolism in the story. One use of symbolism in the novel is when Mayella Ewell is compared to the red geranium. One corner of the yard, though, bewildered Maycomb. Against the fence, in a line, were six chipped enamel slop jars holding brilliant geraniums, cared for as tenderly as if they belonged to Miss Maudie Atkinson, had Miss Maudie deigned to permit a geranium on her premises. People said they were Mayella Ewell s (pg. 194). Known as the poor man s rose, the red geranium symbolizes gentility. The flowers growing in the filthy jars represent Mayella and the conditions she lived in. Mayella was a young girl that was living a terrible life and had no form of beauty in her life. Attending to those flowers had finally gave Mayella a form of beauty and hope. They showed Mayella that underneath the ugly and unappealing, there is still beauty. Another form of symbolism is when Miss Maudie is compared to her azaleas. Miss Maudie hated her house: time spent indoors was time wasted. • 35. The Importance Of Cognitive Development In Willy Wonka And... Childhood, as we all know, is the state or period of being a child; the early period in the development of something (Merriam Webster). The movie Willy Wonka the Chocolate Factory (1971) illustrates five different children with each having different behavior, and they have one thing in common they are the only child in their family. These children are in the middle childhood, primary school age, around age seven or eight. What makes them different from each other is interesting. It allows the viewers to think if their behavior is either result of their experience or how they were raised. How they perceive things and how they behave are part of their cognitive development.
