A Hint of Humor, a Dash of Cinnamon... in the Legal...
In the year 1947, legal conflict arose between Warner Brothers Studio and the Marx Brothers. It began
when the Marx Brothers released the name of one of their upcoming films, A Night in Casablanca.
When Warner Brothers claimed exclusive rights to the name Casablanca, Groucho Marx sent a letter
to Warner Brothers in response. In spite of a few ambiguities, Marx employs a brilliant and clever
combination of humor and logic to effectively refute Warner Brothers s assertion. Throughout his
letter, Marx uses his ever present wit to dissolve any actual or imagined hostility in his addressee. For
example, in one section, he says I am sure that the average movie fan could learn tin time to
distinguish between Ingrid Birdman [the female star of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Marx s argument here simply makes sense. Rather than befuddling legal jargon, he shows that the idea
of owning Casablanca is absurd in the same way that owning the word brothers is absurd. His logic
pierces through any uncertainty and effectively explains his point. He later arrives at the conclusion
that this attempt to prevent us from using the title is the brainchild of some ferret faced shyster,
serving a brief apprenticeship in your legal department (Marx 2). Marx sees this inference as valid,
logical reason for Warner Brothers s interference. As such, he attempts to show the irrationality of any
hindrance to the Marx Brothers planned film title. While Groucho Marx does have a number of potent
and valid arguments, some poorly planned passages slightly diminish the overall effectiveness of his
letter. A recurring issue, Marx s tendency for rambling distracts the reader from his main goal. His
references to Burbank Studio, Old Man Burbank, and Harry Appelbaum seem to have no pertinence to
the intended subject. However, these are not major issues and can be ignored in order to find Marx s
true purpose. Even more powerful than either comedy or logic alone are instances in which both of
these elements are used together in harmony with each other. To start off his letter, Marx makes this
comment: Apparently, there is more than one way of conquering a city and holding it as your own. For
example, up to the

Marketing Plan For Whole Foods Market
Team Based Organizations Today s organizations need to focus on their internal customers by
promoting team based cultures. An effective team based organization will succeed when they
collaborate with their team members. Therefore, effective teams value one another, set common goals,
and foster a culture where appreciation is expressed openly with other team members (Duggan, n.d.).
Creating a teamwork approach results in loyalty, trust, and cohesiveness, this leads to increased
productivity for the organization (Duggan, n.d.) Achieving a team based organization starts with the
leaders characteristics. These characteristics should include trust, team empowerment, goal setting,
team accountability, and shared leadership (Markovich, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Their team based organization is made up of the following characteristics and leadership styles.
Characteristics and Leadership Styles The co founder and CEO John Mackey, believes the most
important role he plays in the organization is being seen. He visits each store and talks with the team
members and customers while communicating the mission of the company (Mackey, 2010). He
believes walking and talking the mission, which emphases the tune of the organization. Therefore,
without this leadership direction the company would not be successful in fostering teamwork. The
strategy Whole Foods uses is a combination of democracy and discipline (Fishman, n.d.). They foster
a sense of community while staying committed to productivity (Fishman, n.d.).
Self Directed Teams The company focuses on having self directed teams. Every individual belongs to
a team within the organization. The teams meet on a regular basis to discuss issues, solve problems
and to recognize one another s contributions. As the teams solve problems, they keep the business
objectives, values, and performance of the organization at the center of their discussions (Cuenlla,
2013). The teams have the power to approve new hires. This hiring process affects the behavior of
everyone involved especially the store leaders, as they only recommend potential candidates that the
team will approve. This builds trust between the team members and management. The

The Opening Of The Imperial Ballet School
After the Romantic era ballet had died out in Paris and Russia became the new focus. In 1738, the
opening of the Imperial Ballet School in St. Petersburg attracted many great dancers and
choreographers such as Marie Taglioni. This school was controlled by an aristocrat named Czar. The
most well known 19th century choreographer, Marius Petipa, became the ballet master of the entire
school, shaping imperial and classical ballet. Ideas such as increased focus on technique, formulaic
choreography, mime and gesture, and lengthy ballets can be seen in Petipa s most famous ballets.
These famous ballets include The Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, and Swan Lake. In the 20th
century, Sergei Diaghilev introduced a traveling ballet company called Ballet Russes. Starting out in
Paris, this company brings together Russian and Western ideas with a spark of modernism. This
company brought together revolutionary collaborations between choreographers, dancers, composers,
artists, and fashion designers. Through the development of Russian ballet, there has been rejection and
embracement as well as changes in structure and choreography. Ballet master Marius Petipa moved to
Russia because he felt hidden in the shadows of his more famous brother Lucien Petipa. For three
decades, he was the ballet master of the Imperial Ballet School creating lavish, extravagant ballets
unlike the previous Romantic era had. Petipa had some new ideas for the ballet. For example,

Theory Of Conformity And Social Control Theories Of Crime
Theory of conformity outlines the ideals that an individual will change values or behavior in order to
fit in with a group. When it comes to the social control theory of crime, this is a central concept in
understanding why people deviate from legal regulations. When looking at individuals without
dependable relationships, a committed presence within their community and an upbringing with
specific beliefs, it can be found that people are more likely to follow a life of crime if they do not
present the listed characteristics (Orcutt 2011:97). According to Travis Hirschi (1969) there are four,
more definitive, central elements that cause people to maintain social norms; emotional attachment to
family , engagement with goals and future aspirations,

The Market For Reproductive Management Products
Industry and Customer Value According to MedTech, (2015) the U.S. market for reproductive
management products was estimated at more than $3.7 billion in 2013. This market, which includes a
broad range of contraceptive drugs, contraceptive devices/implants, and fertility drugs, is expected to
expand at a healthy compound annual growth rate of more than 7%, increasing by more than $1.5
billion over a span of 5 years. A recent report released by Grand View research stated that healthcare
provider training has been more focused on IUDs and implants due to more young women requesting
these types of contraceptive devices. (Grand View Research, Inc., 2015, p. 01) Grand View further
stated that the North America contraceptives market accounted for the largest share of Contraceptive
growth at over 30.0% in 2014 owing to, the high incidence rates of abortion, rising population of
women within the age group of 15 44 years, and high patient awareness levels in the region. They
forecast that the presence of an extensive product pipeline portfolio is expected to boost industry
growth throughout 2020. Mirena, manufactured by Bayer, is a non seasonal, long acting intrauterine
contraception device that is indicated to treat heavy menstrual bleeding and to also to prevent
conception in women for up to 5 years. This intrauterine device is placed by a patient s healthcare

The gold rush started because Edward Hargraves returned to Australia after prospecting gold in
California he noticed that some parts of Australia were similar and convinced gold could be found. He
was proved right a year later he discovered gold in New South Wales in April 1851 he spread the news
to local colonies and overseas but it took many months for people overseas to find out. For the first

The Controversy Of Edward Jenner s Vaccine
The history of vaccinations begin with Edward Jenner, the country doctor from Gloucestershire who
found, growing on cows, a nearly harmless virus the protected people from smallpox. Jenner s vaccine
was safer, more reliable, and more durable than variolation, and it is still the only vaccine to have
eliminated its reason for being in 1980, when the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the
disease extinct. For nearly a century and a half, smallpox was the only vaccine routinely administered,
and it saved millions of lives . But the controversy that marked the return of the vaccine, amid
bioterrorism hysteria in 2002, was only the latest twist in the remarkable, mysterious life of vaccines.

Economics Of Immigration
July 05, 2016
Introduction
When touching upon the topic of immigration and the United States economy, one must acknowledge
that the impact that immigrants have on the economy can be perceived as both negative and positive.
For years there has always been an ongoing debate whether the benefits outweighs the costs. One can
be led to believe that immigration increases a nations overall productivity. Therefore, leading to an
overall increase in profits. However, other factors such as the cost of migration, complementary versus
substitute labor and illegal immigration do impact the nations average labor wages, American
businesses and politics on all economic levels. It is often easier to assume that immigration, especially
when it involves undocumented ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It s easy to argue that illegal immigrants are stealing the jobs that a typical native born citizen would
have. However, immigration in a sense where supply and demand can be applied benefits the
economy because it generates more production. Immigrants are more open to lower wages, therefore
reducing the cost of production and the cost of products for businesses and the average consumers. In
addition, one may argue that immigrants lower the average wage when in fact it does not affect the
skilled worker which is often referred to as the native born. Lastly, when it comes taking jobs as
opposed to providing them, it is easy to stem away from the fact that immigrants are complementary
resources as opposed to substitute ones. Immigrants can generate more jobs and prevent businesses
from going more automotive. Although politically, immigration is seen as an economic strain, it also
keeps the economy

The Method Observed Was The Direct Method
Maggie Berti LLL 690 Direct Method analysis
Summary
The method observed was the Direct Method. The teacher spoke Catalan (the target language) from
the very first moment she arrived in class greeting the students with the words bona tarda . First, she
started the lesson by writing on the blackboard parts del dia , el matí , la tarda and la nit . In order to
explain the meaning of such words she showed the gesture of waking up and then she turned on and
off the light of the room twice. The teacher continued to explain the meaning of the words with
drawings on the blackboard: a sun next to the word sol , a star next to the word estrella , a moon next
to the word lluna and a cloud next to the word núvols . Second, she opened a book and read the first
two lines. To explain the meaning of what was just read she moved around the classroom and
illustrated verbs trough actions. For example, to explain the word perdre (to lose) she acted as she was
looking for something around the room. Next she asked the students, again in the target language, to
read aloud a couple of sentences one by one. After each student read the teacher used gestures and
pictures to explain what was written in the text. In order to explain the word país she made an example
in Catalan using students personal factors: Italia es un país . While reading the book she showed
images that represented what was happening in the story; each line had a different image that helped

Analysis Of The Novel The Graveyard Book
The Graveyard Book (2008) by Neil Gaiman breaks down the borderline between the dead and living
world in his novel. Gaiman presents an irony in his novel by giving the caring nature to the dead
people of the graveyard. He presents the graveyard as a safe place for an innocence, rather than the
living world. Silas is a mysterious character throughout the novel and his existence is not stated very
clearly amongst the living and dead. However, there are some evidence in the novel, which unravels
the existence of Silas as an undead being, whose life is caught in between the border line of life and
death. Silas is a reformed version of a vampire, who is travelling through the darkness of life for the
search of light.
First and foremost, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, Silas never appears during the daylight or sunlight throughout the novel. Psi vampires
only relies on the energies of souls. The vampires rely on the processed life force and sun is an
unprocessed celestial energy (Ankhape, Vampirism Forum ). Sun is a symbol of light and rebirth, and
vampires are not categorized even in dead and livings. Hence, vampires dislike the bright rays of
sunlight. For example: he would be there waiting at sunset, just before Silas awakened (Gaiman 37).
This reveals that Silas do not like the sunlight and he always meet with Bod after or before the sunset.
His day begin after the sunset and ends before the sun rise. Likewise, when Silas awakes before the
time and want to meet Bod in the chapel, it is clearly stated that he does not like the remnants of light
(Gaiman 177). He was standing in the shadow of corner to protect himself from the daylight. This
shows that Silas is a vampire. Vampires are the undead beings, who never categorized in the living and
dead world and this is justified with the statement of Silas during the occasion of macabray dance. As
he said to Bod that you must be alive or you must be dead to dance and I am neither (Gaiman 149). It
is the first plot in the novel, when Silas actually put his existence in between the living and dead.
Therefore, the existence of Silas is stated unclearly as a reformed vampire, who is seeking the path of
light in his life.

Poem Analysis Of Wilfred Owen
Kavitha Vudatha Period 2B
Wilfred Owen Poem Analysis Essay Wilfred Owen is a poet whose journey through life has molded
him into a character of testimony and reality. From the early days of his childhood to his experiences
in war, Owen has evolved into a poet who provides his altruistic view on life. His use of diction that
emphasizes his theme of appearance/and or fate vs reality and the imagery that describes each scene
with clarity and connection of Owen s spirit to his experiences in war, provides not only a peek into
his life but his views on what he saw and what makes him unique. During his time serving in the war,
Wilfred Owen was able to capture many ideas, concepts, and perceptions that cleverly portrayed into
his poems. Even the Sassoon had an impression that Owen, no matter what, had complete dedication
and he passionately wanted to survive the war, so that he might continue to write poetry.. he showed
himself as ...an increasingly self critical one. Owen was quite dedicated to his work and he let nothing
go past him. His sentiment to the war was a recurring speech that echoed his very thoughts. In one of
his poems, the Sentry, Owens uses the words Hammered , choked , murk.. , and whizz bangs to
establish the reality of war and what those soldiers are put through. This is in contrast with the word
coaxing , which shifts the attention away from reality to more of Owen s altruism and appearance that
the man is able to survive. The onomatopoeia used in the second stanza present a sudden push into
reality, such as thud! Flump! Thud! . This sudden jump also supplies information on how difficult it
was to navigate through the war zone. In the third stanza, Owen switches to a form of fate, in which he
relates how this may have been the fate of the man. He forms these thoughts with words phrases such
as wild chattering , crumps , Pummelled , or slogged the air , that imply how the feeling of dread
metaphorically listens for these words before striking . The Sentry is quite different from any of the
other poems that Wilfred Owen has written in that it seems to be centered around internal dialogue
rather than just him laying out details and interpretations of events. The specific dialogue he

Lab Report Titration
Abstract: In this experiment, our team analyzed an unknown acid and a sample of vinegar solution by
the process of titration using a 0.1 M sodium hydroxide solution as the titrant, as this solution is a
strong base. In addition, our team members used phenolphthalein as indicator in the reaction.
Introduction: First of all, for this experiment our team made use of several glassware, such as a buret,
three 250 mL erlenmeyer flask, and a 10 mL flask. Additional, we also used a buret clamp, a plastic
bottle with stopper, sodium hydroxide in form of pellets, potassium hydrogen phthalate (KHP),
phenolphthalein as indicator, unknown acid and vinegar. The process of titration involves measuring
the exact volume of the known concertation (which in this case is sodium hydroxide) that is required
to react with a measured volume of an unknown concertation. Our team used sodium hydroxide, since
it is a common solution used in titration analysis of samples containing a solute acid. Nevertheless,
sodium hydroxide must be used quickly, since this solution can react with carbon dioxide from the
atmosphere and its concentration will change with the time. In order to not add an excess of titrant
than the necessary for the reaction, our team made use of phenolphthalein as indicator. This indicator
in particular changes to a pale pink color from basic pH. On the other hand, we also titrated a sample
of vinegar with the same sodium hydroxide solution, since vinegar is a dilute solution of acetic

Argumentative Essay On Public Health
Public health institutions have developed strategies to improve children s life. They focused in three
main points the need to focus on the environment that makes children sick rather than on sick
children; the need to attack the biggest problems, not the most scientifically interesting ones; and the
need to provide services where children are most likely to be (Howard, Golden, 2017). They agree that
children s problems are environmental reactions as it was in the past. Therefore, the history plays a big
role in policy discussions. In 1900, the child welfare movement made an impact in public health as
well as in children health care. Public health helped to catch infectious diseases and many other family
conditions (Howard, Golden, 2017).
Accordingly, the government established a national public health infrastructure. Indeed, hospitals,
medical schools and research laboratories creation made a difference in children s health. In fact, the
government commitment was to prevent the infant and child s mortality (Howard, Golden, 2017).

Should Condoms Be Distributed in High Schools
Teen s Health Causes Condom Distribution in Public High Schools The average age for the start of
puberty is eleven years old. During adolescence, teens undergo changes within their bodies. This is the
time where they begin to form their own identity. As a result, it leads to experimentation in a vast
number of ways. Dress, personality, and drugs are all types of experimentation that teens go through.
The most important is sexuality. Decisions being made by teens today are resulting in consequences
that are affecting their own health. The recent breakout of STD s (sexually transmitted diseases),
AIDS, and teen pregnancies in the past two decades have brought this issue to the attention of society.
There is a dispute of whether or not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, when it comes to sexually transmitted diseases and AIDS, victims of those diseases may not
be so lucky and in some cases, unfortunately result in deaths. Health of teenagers needs to be taken
seriously because they are the next generation. If no action is put in place to prevent such diseases,
spreading continuously throughout the world may occur. The consequences of not using condoms are
immense. According to a nursing school website, one in four college students has an STD. Society
needs to think long and hard about how their future will unfold if they do not act fast. Condoms
should be available in high schools because of the rise in teen pregnancy, STD s and Aids. The big
picture is teen s health and helping them in any way possible to benefit in the long run. Because the
previously mentioned studies have shown that having condoms available in schools increases the
percentage of students who use condoms as well as not change the percent of students who are
sexually active makes the decision to have condoms available in the nurses office simple. The nurse s
office is the desired place because it is already an established department dedicated to teen s health.
However, students may not just walk in and grab condoms at their convenience; there are certain
requirements that must be met before they are granted such privileges. Because kids come from all
different types of schools, it s not fair to have requirements

The Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood
Rebecca Wells paints a picture of the various roles that women often must encounter in their lives:
mother, daughter, friend. As said by Charlotte Observer She [Wells] speaks eloquently to what it
means to be a mother, a daughter, a wife and somehow, at last, a person. Wells uses a captivating style
to create a simple plot, memorable symbolism and a reoccurring theme of friendship. The Divine
Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood teaches about the importance of giving and receiving love and finding
joy in everyday life.
The simplistic plot of the novel and the overall theme of love allows the author to span the lives of the
main characters. The reader sees the span of the life of two of the main characters, Sidda and her

There s such a thing as alligators that get in the way for certain people (Wells 315). Connor s response
to this is that his love is stronger for her than any of the problems that they could encounter in their

the dangers in life; whether the love of a mother, or eventually partner, people overcome the alligators.
The creative and unique style which Wells chooses facilitate the reader in capturing the true message
without wasting time with character descriptions. Through the series of letters written to other
characters the reader gets a third person voice from the author, but with a first person view from the
character. This is fascinating to the reader because it allows the reader to understand and each
character individually. The reader is able to see traits that might not be revealed by the book. Wells

Types Of Personality Tests Out There
There are many types of personality tests out there. Some of them are better than others. These tests
are used to help determine the different personality types. Many employers use these tests to help
place new employees. They also use them to help determine if an employee will work out or not. It
can be important to know your own personality type. Understanding how you learn and what type of
jobs might be best for you can be very helpful in your own life. Many employers use tests like the one
found on the personality page website. One of their goals is to find employees with the best
personality for the job. Using these tests can save a company a lot of time and effort when hiring new
employees. For example, Overnight Transportation in Atlanta found that using such tests reduced their
on the job delinquency by 50% 100% (Livingston, p. 54). This is a huge drop saves them so much
time and money by hiring more reliable people. Though there are some downsides to these personality
tests by employers. To get the most accurate assessment you have to be honest when taking the test.
When an employer is looking for the best personality for the job a perspective employee has motives
not to be honest. A complicating factor is that people filling out the survey do not have a strong
incentive to be honest. In fact, they have a greater incentive to guess what the job requires and answer
the questions in a way they think the company is looking for (Livingston, p. 55). This is

Movie Summary
In the fictitious movie, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, the seat of former U.S. Senator Sam Foley is
filled by special appointment with the young Boy Ranger leader, Jefferson Smith. Mr. Smith is thrust
into a world of United States politics, of which he has no prior experience. When he makes it to the
Senate, the goal of other elected officials from his state is to keep pertinent information from him,
seeing him only as a mindless vote. The incumbent senator and others have a plan to push through a
Deficiency bill for the Willet Creek dam which will profitable to them. When Mr. Smith is encouraged

This includes a point in the movie when the other senators walk out no longer wanting to listen to
Smith, leading him to call a quorum: after which, the senators returned in shifts. After calling for a
quorum, Smith was recognized on the floor of the Senate and began speaking about his bill, initiating
a filibuster that lasted over 23 hours. Using the filibuster allowed Smith to speak for an unlimited
amount of time. Cloture, or a vote of 60 senators or three fifths of the Senate, could have been used to
stop the filibuster, but this was not depicted in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (Bardes 395). Jefferson
Smith s filibuster in the movie was highly reflective of a real filibuster in that he could not sit down or
leave the room. While what was unrealistic about his filibuster was that his associate, Saunders,
walked him through what to say from the observation

All-Sports Banquet Essay
80 leading colleges across the United States are changing their applications. For decades colleges have
worked towards a similar application, but have decided to change that. One of the larger changes will
be adding a portfolio system. Freshmen can interact with colleges by adding work to their portfolio
and receive coaching.Organizers of the effort believe it will lower some of the disadvantages faced by
students without access to guidance offices or private counselors. Using the essays stored in your
portfolio you can choose to submit one in with the application. Essays and short answer questions can

Laurel Creek In Water Essay
Assessing rising invertebrate indicator species presence using the kick and sweep method at Laurel
Creek in Waterloo

Keywords
Benthic Invertebrate: commonly used to provide information on the status of a water system. Having a
short life span and a limited range of motion, this organism can do little to avoid pollution and
therefore provides significant data concerning anthropogenic impacts. (Beatty et al., 2006)
Indicator Species: an organism that provides information on the environmental condition of a region

Stream Morphology: used to describe the shape of water channels and how they change over time
through erosion, vegetation, and the availability and rate of sediment transport. (Hogan Luzi, 2010)
Introduction Through the city of Waterloo flows a stream named Laurel Creek that originates from
well north of the city, and as it flows into Silver Lake, it provides a home for many organisms both on
land and in the water. This stream has been heavily influenced by human construction, and has a
number of reservoirs along its path. As the water moves downstream towards more populated areas, it
becomes a sink for waste coming from many sources along the way. To monitor the health of Laurel
Creek, indicator species such as benthic invertebrates that reside in the water are collected to
determine the current status of the stream. The purpose of this study is to determine the best location
to collect samples of invertebrates in relationship to the stream morphology of Laurel Creek. The
results from this study could then be used on other locations suffering the same problem in Waterloo.
These areas can then be observed to determine if a solution can be found to decrease pollution,

Analysis Of Ruta Sepetys Between Shades Of Gray
Have you ever wondered what a human life was worth? That morning, my brother s was worth a
pocket watch (Sepetys). At this point, the NKVD are trying to separate families, but the Vilkas stay
strong and do not let the NKVD push them around. They keep the hope that they will be fine. Before
that, the NKVD gathered up all the Lithuanians who were on the list and put them on a bus to some
sort of station and from there they traveled to labor camps and then again they took a few from the
labor camp and put them on buses and took them too a new location where they were basically sent to
die. This all occurred during the time of World War two. Wrhn Stalin and Hitler were fighting for land.
The novel of discussion is Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys. It is about Lina Vilka and her
family as they travel from labor camp to labor camp, and experience terrible abuse and treacherous
conditions. In the process of it Lina manages to fall in love with a boy named Andrius. Sadly after
they realize they like one another they are moved to another camp. The worst part of the whole book is
the deaths it describes. The death of Lina s parents, other Lithuanians at the camps, Ona, and Ona s
baby. It is a;; just horrible. How can one even think of such horrible things to do to innocent people. In
the song Titanium it shows great similarities to Between Shades of Gray. Although Between Shades of

The Culture And Culture Of South Africa
South African heritage and culture is immensely diverse, and consists of many different groups of
people who each have their own traditions and beliefs. Having such a diversity of people and cultures
is what makes South Africa so unique. In the true sense of the phrase, we are a rainbow nation.
The Portuguese culture and heritage is one that is quite dense and easily found within the mix of all
the other cultures in South Africa. South Africa has approximately three hundred thousand Portuguese
people living in it. Making it the 7th on the list of countries with the most Portuguese people in it
outside of Portugal.
Portuguese is not only a culture, but it is also a language and a nationality. Portuguese people originate
from the country of Portugal in Europe, however, due to Portugal (like many other countries in
Europe) exploring the world and conquering other countries during the 15th 20th centuries, South
Africa has what we call Portuguese South African s living in it. Portuguese people are true blue blood

Fm Rouge Research Paper
Empirically, the Khmer Rouge regime, from its conception in 1975 to its fall in 1979, supremely,
holistically, and irreversibly overthrew Cambodian society. As a hard line communist movement
defined by fundamentalist socialism the Khmer Rouge, under leader Pol Pot, attempted total social
reconstruction and evolution. Envisaging a Cambodia without inequality and equal distribution of
wealth, the Khmer Rouge implemented its aims of isolation and departure from Western capitalism
through oppressive technique; in seeking a better nation, the movement indeed destroyed the
ideological and philosophical integrity of Cambodia s political system, economic structure, and social
fabric.
Primarily, the Khmer Rouge aimed in an economic sense to revitalise the national economy under the

A major aspect of the economic impact of the Khmer Rouge was the widespread establishment of
agricultural cooperatives, or a pointed process of collectivisation, which completely changed the
dynamic of the Cambodian labour force and also the inherent means of production, distribution, and
exchange. The working population was separated into three forces who were assigned to different
aspects of the economy which were all based in advancing agriculture, be it actually producing food or
developing infrastructure to supplement it. All were expected to work 10 12 hour days and labour
conditions were generally subpar with harsh discipline and poor hygiene. In a similar fashion to
achieve economic independence in the communism model the Khmer Rouge abolished all private
ownership, leading to neglected industrial sectors and a sever deterioration in the functionality of the
tertiary industry. The essence of the economic implications of the Khmer Rouge is evident in, again,

Affective Gaming Essay
Shigeru Miyamoto, the father of the Mario and Zelda franchises, tells us that he designs his games
around a series of specific emotional experiences. Console manufacturer Sony have christened the
PlayStation 2 s CPU the emotion engine . Clearly the gaming community understands the importance
of emotion in games, so why do most games offer the player such a shallow emotional play
experience?
The reason is partly due to the relative immaturity of the games industry. Whereas the film industry
has a mature and well developed structure for how the auteur might evoke tears in the eyes of the
audience, the digital games industry is still in the process of writing the rule book.
With digital gaming being a visual medium, you might expect ... Show more content on

Recognising the emotional state of the player
There are various tools which can be used to determine the affective state of the game player.
Researchers at MIT in Dublin have been investigating the use of galvanic skin response (GSR) to
determine a player s state of arousal. Relax to Win is a therapeutic game where the player s level of
relaxation controls the speed of a racing dragon. At the Interactive Institute in Stockholm, the player s
brain activity is being measured by an electroencephalogram (EEG) in the game Brainball . This is a
two player game where the direction of a steel ball is determined by each player s ability to meditate.
An alternative method for recognising emotions using traditional console equipment is currently being
investigated at Glasgow Caledonian University. Already, experiments have found that the affective
state of the player can be determined by how they use the gamepad. Not only does the pressure of
button depression indicate the level of player arousal, but also the rate at which a button is pressed and
eventually released indicates the emotion felt by a player.
There are three major benefits to be gained from knowing the affective state of the player:

Like the traditional campfire storyteller who adapts their story to the listener, the game designer can

Diversity in Law Enforcement Essay
Final Paper Diversity in law enforcement has grown to become a hot topic within the law enforcement
community. The demographic of society has changed dramatically over the last 20 years and with that
law enforcement has been changing, but have they been changing enough? Different law enforcement
agencies have their own ways of implementing diversity in their practices and procedures, some of
them are better than others, but with issues that happen today it is important that they do something.
There have been major incidents in our generation that have caused the need for diversity reform in
law enforcement. The biggest incident was the attacks on the United States of America that occurred
on September 11th, 2001. The attacks that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Following this African Americans were always treated as unequal to the white male. They were
segregated and found it utterly impossible to gain any ground in society. How could they? African
Americans rarely got the opportunity to get an education or have a good job.
Hate crimes have continued to be a very real issue for African Americans. According to civilrights.org
Despite the election of our nations first African American President, African Americans remain by far
the most frequent victims of hate crimes...On election night in 2008, Ralph Nicoletti and Michael
Contreas, both 18, and Brian Carranza 21, of Staten Island, New York decided shortly after learning of
Barrack Obama s election victory to find African Americans to assault...The men drove to a
predominantly African American neighborhood in Staten Island where they came upon a 17 year old
African American who was walking home after watching the election at a friends house. One of the
men in the car yelled Obama Then, the men got out of the car and beat the youth with a metal pipe and
collapsible police baton, injuring his head and legs. The men went on to commit additional assaults
that night. (civilrights.org) Again, here is another prime example of why it is important to reform
diversity in law enforcement and think of creative ways to educate and police these communities.
There are some law enforcement agencies that are taking a proactive approach by implementing

Religion Vs Ramayana
The Ramayana is one of the world s oldest religious epics, dating back to roughly 7,000 B.C. and only
first being written down around 500 B.C. Compare this to the Bible, in which scholars believe that
writing began for the Old Testament around 5,000 B.C. Both of these texts have been continually
updated since their respective creations. Since the Ramayana was first only an oral story, it continually
went through progressive changes, with its first written incarnation taking place around 500 B.C.
Since then, the Ramayana has been continually updated, retold, and reinvigorated. The Ramayana
holds great significance in Indian/Southeast Asian cultures, as it s influenced the sphere since its

The dharma applies the law, religion, and the ultimate reality in which we leave. In Hinduism, the
concept of dharma or duty applies to everyone, no matter what social status, age, or caste. By
following one s specific dharma, one could break samsara, the cycle of endless rebirth, and achieve
moksha, the liberation from samsara. You cannot count on the physical proximity of someone you
love, all the time. A seed that sprouts at the foot of its parent tree remains stunted until it is
transplanted...Every human being, when the time comes, has to depart and seek his fulfillment in his
own way (Page 9). In Hinduism, the emphasis is placed on an individual s duty to find their own way,
their own purpose. By doing so, own can find purpose in their life, or find fulfillment . While both the
Bible and the Ramayana focus on duty, their versions of duty are different. In the Bible, duty is a
much more unifying concept than an individualistic concept. In the Old Testament, the concept of the
Ten Commandments applies to the duty of Christians. Specifically found in Exodus 20, Moses goes to
the top of Mount Sinai to have a conversation with God. Here, God lies out the Ten Commandments
as a guideline for the lost people who have turned to worshipping false ideals. The concept of the Ten
Commandments applies to all Christians, as it is their duty to obey the Lord out of the love that the
Lord has given them.

One of Socrates main argument that changed the way I looked at a particular subject was in the

The Trade And Freight Markets
2008 saw the beginning of an economic crisis which saw the failure of numerous shipping companies
and shipyards resulting in a remarkable decrease in the quantity and cost of newbuilding orders.
However, 2013 marked the beginning of a market revival following trippled orderbooks compared to
2012, from 148 m dwt (1800 ships) to 54 m dwt (842 ships), aswell as a 10 20% increase in selling
prices following an 11 year all time low. Similarly, world order book which had decreased by half in 5
years, between 2008 and 2012, increased significantly from 245 m dwt (3,766) to 272 dwt (3,589
ships) which now amounts to 18% of fleet in service compared to 17% in 2012 and 53% in 2008.
China remains by far the largest market share holder with 47% followed by Korea and Japan which
hold 28% and 15% of the market respectively and Europe owning a mere 1%. The maritime trade and
freight markets took a similar turn to recovery despite economic growth dropping to 3% in 2013 from
3.1% in 2012, far below the forecast 3.9%. Trade on the other hand continued to suffer and reached
2.7%, far below 2011 and 2012 which had 6.1 and 12.6%. There is reason for optimism however as
shown by the Baltic Dry Index which started off very low in the first quarter at 796 but rose
significantly in the second of half of the year resulting in an average of 1,198 compared to 920 in
2012. Despite falling short of the 2011 and 2010 indices of 1584 and 2758 respectively, the trend

Love, Care, And Treat People With Respect From A Very...
I was taught to love, care, and treat people with respect from a very young age. When I was a young
girl, my mom would take me with her to work. At the time, she worked at an assisted living center in
Rome, Georgia. You see, I was a very quiet and curious child who observed the world innocently with
bright, untainted eyes. I didn t care much to be around the other children who were usually loud and
somewhat bothersome, but I enjoyed being around adults. So when my mom would take me with her,
the elderly people living there found much joy in having my company. I would sit and listen to them
tell me all sorts of stories from their past for hours on end, but I loved to hear about them. In a way, I
somehow understood that these people were lonely and only had so much time left. They just wanted
someone who could appreciate them and what they had to say; they wanted to feel like they were of
some importance and had a sense of meaning. I cared greatly about what they had to say, even though
I didn t understand it that much. More importantly, I cared about their feelings and wellbeing. I can
still remember at least two of my mom s patients. One was a man named Lou, and I believe he wore a
prosthetic leg. He was a very sweet and dear old man who loved the outdoors. My mom would bring
him outside in the mornings to watch the birds and to get some fresh, crisp, morning air. He had

FEW US PRESIDENTS got it as wrong as Jimmy Carter, when, on New Year s Eve 1977, during a
state visit to Iran he confidently opined: Iran, because of the great leadership of the Shah, is an island
of stability in one of the more troubled areas of the world. The President spoke way too soon. A week
later, the Shah s police shot down dozens of theology students in the holy city of Qom as they
demonstrated against a scurrilous attack on the prominent Muslim cleric Ayatollah Khomeini in a pro
government newspaper.
The incident triggered off a year of growing protest that climaxed in a full blown revolution. The Shah
s government collapsed. He was forced out of Iran and into exile.
US relations with the new regime began to deteriorate speedily. The catalyst was the events that took
place on 4 November, when, angered by the US government s decision to allow the exiled Shah into
the US for cancer treatment, a mob of young Iranians, mostly radical university students and
supporters of Ayatollah Khomeini, laid siege to the US Embassy in Tehran. They surged over the wall
around the Embassy compound and broke into its buildings. Most of the embassy personnel in the
compound were taken hostage. Their ordeal was to last for the next 14 months.
Six Americans managed to escape capture. Lee Schatz, the Agricultural Attaché, casually strolled
through the crowd to take refuge inside the Swedish Embassy. Robert Anders, the head of the
Embassy s Consular Section, Joe Stafford, Mark Lijek

Examples Of Social Darwinism In The Jungle
In Sinclair s novel, the jungle, you get a closer look into the societal classes and the struggles that
immigrants face when they come to America. In this essay, I will be talking about all the things that
Jurgis as well as his family have overcome. Such as their downfalls as well as how they prospered and
managed to stay together through most of the novel. Social Darwinism helps you get a different
perspective of all the things going on in the societal classes.
When someone has no motivation they really have no want to succeed. Being an immigrant and
coming to the United States doesn t mean you re going to get rich at the instant. Even by working, you
won t get at the level of the upper class rich people. Dishonesty is shown a lot among immigrants.
Jurgis for example at the beginning of the novel had his family, his wife Ona, which made him the
happiest man alive. No matter how rough the situation was he wouldn t care because he had his wife.
Life put Jurgis through some pretty tough obstacles like the death of Ona and then shortly after the
death of his baby. The so called real estate agent offered them a deal on this supposed great house that
was cheap and exactly what they were looking for but little did Jurgis know that with that house came
many more little pricy things that the agent forgot to tell them. Since that point on every day living in
that house was hell. Everyone in that household worked and they barely made it through the month.
Barely made it through with

Anyone Lived In A Pretty How Town Summary
In the poem, anyone lived in a pretty how town , author, E. E. Cummings sometimes uses words in
very unusual ways. Line 7, which says they sowed their isn t they reaped their same is no exception
(line 7). To start off we need to decipher who the they Cummings is talking about in this line. The they
Cummings is talking about here is made known in line 5. Cummings points out that Women and men
(both little and small) are the they who sowed their isn t and the they that reaped their same (line 5 7).
If you think about line 7 from the farming standpoint you can infer that sow could mean to plant
something and reap could mean to harvest what was planted. Now, let s talking about how they sowed
their isn t (line 7). To sow something, you have to have a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A seed is something a farmer places in the ground in hope of it sprouting and becoming a plant.
However, the seed isn t a plant just yet. Thinking about what seed women and men sow this part of the
line could possibly be actually talking about children and how the women and the men sowed what
doesn t exist quite yet a child! Moving forward, to the next part (and back in the farming mindset),
they reaped their same (line 7). If you planted 7 tomato seeds you would expect 7 tomato plants to
grow, not 4 tomato plants and 3 cucumber plants. Here, the same logic can apply. When the women
and men plant their seeds (future children) and they sprout(are born) they raise them and grow them
together and they all grow up to be the same uniform product. So in line 7 Cummings may be
describing how in this little town the women and the men have children who all grow up to be the
exact same, just like tiny little rows of tomatoes. In lines 19 20, Cummings states, they/said their
nevers they slept their

Marilyn Frye The Politics Of Reality Summary
The intentions of Feminism are still often misinterpreted even today in the twenty first century despite
this being a modern era. Marilyn Frye s discussion on the role of women in society in the text The
Politics of Reality focuses on her definition of oppression , its criteria and how it applies to feminist
theory. Frye immediately opens her discussion with this statement; it is a fundamental claim of
feminism that women are oppressed , (1983, p:1). It is important to note that she has used the word
claim as it implies that the oppression of women is still a matter of debate. As a disclaimer, she makes
it clear that the purpose of this text is not to prove that women are in fact oppressed, but to gain clarity
on the meaning of the term ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Firstly, Frye discusses the etymology of the word oppression stating that it has its elements from the
word press , 1983, p: 2. She then gives imagery in order to demonstrate that the word is very
restrictive in nature as if something were; caught between or among forces and barriers which are so
related to each other that jointly they restrain, restrict or prevent the thing s motion or mobility , (Frye,
1983, p:2). Frye makes the point that he first criterion in defining oppression is that the oppressed is
restricted or limited in some manner, giving the sense that they have been moulded, immobilised or
reduced. She exemplifies this notion with the following comparison using her theory of the double
bind theory. According to Frye, in the United States, young women, are locked in a bind where if they
exhibit that they are heterosexually active, then she is explicitly regarded as loose, unprincipled or a
whore , 1983, p:2. The woman may then feel that she must hide her behaviour from her parents who
are likely to look down on her for her promiscuity. She will also face criticism by her peers as being
an easy lay and put down in comparison to her friends who practise more restraint, (Frye, 1983, p:3).

  • 2. A Hint of Humor, a Dash of Cinnamon... in the Legal... In the year 1947, legal conflict arose between Warner Brothers Studio and the Marx Brothers. It began when the Marx Brothers released the name of one of their upcoming films, A Night in Casablanca. When Warner Brothers claimed exclusive rights to the name Casablanca, Groucho Marx sent a letter to Warner Brothers in response. In spite of a few ambiguities, Marx employs a brilliant and clever combination of humor and logic to effectively refute Warner Brothers s assertion. Throughout his letter, Marx uses his ever present wit to dissolve any actual or imagined hostility in his addressee. For example, in one section, he says I am sure that the average movie fan could learn tin time to distinguish between Ingrid Birdman [the female star of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Marx s argument here simply makes sense. Rather than befuddling legal jargon, he shows that the idea of owning Casablanca is absurd in the same way that owning the word brothers is absurd. His logic pierces through any uncertainty and effectively explains his point. He later arrives at the conclusion that this attempt to prevent us from using the title is the brainchild of some ferret faced shyster, serving a brief apprenticeship in your legal department (Marx 2). Marx sees this inference as valid, logical reason for Warner Brothers s interference. As such, he attempts to show the irrationality of any hindrance to the Marx Brothers planned film title. While Groucho Marx does have a number of potent and valid arguments, some poorly planned passages slightly diminish the overall effectiveness of his letter. A recurring issue, Marx s tendency for rambling distracts the reader from his main goal. His references to Burbank Studio, Old Man Burbank, and Harry Appelbaum seem to have no pertinence to the intended subject. However, these are not major issues and can be ignored in order to find Marx s true purpose. Even more powerful than either comedy or logic alone are instances in which both of these elements are used together in harmony with each other. To start off his letter, Marx makes this comment: Apparently, there is more than one way of conquering a city and holding it as your own. For example, up to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. The Opening Of The Imperial Ballet School After the Romantic era ballet had died out in Paris and Russia became the new focus. In 1738, the opening of the Imperial Ballet School in St. Petersburg attracted many great dancers and choreographers such as Marie Taglioni. This school was controlled by an aristocrat named Czar. The most well known 19th century choreographer, Marius Petipa, became the ballet master of the entire school, shaping imperial and classical ballet. Ideas such as increased focus on technique, formulaic choreography, mime and gesture, and lengthy ballets can be seen in Petipa s most famous ballets. These famous ballets include The Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, and Swan Lake. In the 20th century, Sergei Diaghilev introduced a traveling ballet company called Ballet Russes. Starting out in Paris, this company brings together Russian and Western ideas with a spark of modernism. This company brought together revolutionary collaborations between choreographers, dancers, composers, artists, and fashion designers. Through the development of Russian ballet, there has been rejection and embracement as well as changes in structure and choreography. Ballet master Marius Petipa moved to Russia because he felt hidden in the shadows of his more famous brother Lucien Petipa. In addition, one may argue that immigrants lower the average wage when in fact it does not affect the skilled worker which is often referred to as the native born. Lastly, when it comes taking jobs as opposed to providing them, it is easy to stem away from the fact that immigrants are complementary resources as opposed to substitute ones. The teacher spoke Catalan (the target language) from the very first moment she arrived in class greeting the students with the words bona tarda . First, she started the lesson by writing on the blackboard parts del dia , el matí , la tarda and la nit . In order to explain the meaning of such words she showed the gesture of waking up and then she turned on and off the light of the room twice. The teacher continued to explain the meaning of the words with drawings on the blackboard: a sun next to the word sol , a star next to the word estrella , a moon next to the word lluna and a cloud next to the word núvols . Second, she opened a book and read the first two lines. To explain the meaning of what was just read she moved around the classroom and illustrated verbs trough actions. For example, to explain the word perdre (to lose) she acted as she was looking for something around the room. Next she asked the students, again in the target language, to read aloud a couple of sentences one by one. After each student read the teacher used gestures and pictures to explain what was written in the text. In order to explain the word país she made an example in Catalan using students personal factors: Italia es un país . The vampires rely on the processed life force and sun is an unprocessed celestial energy (Ankhape, Vampirism Forum ). For example: he would be there waiting at sunset, just before Silas awakened (Gaiman 37). This reveals that Silas do not like the sunlight and he always meet with Bod after or before the sunset. His day begin after the sunset and ends before the sun rise. Likewise, when Silas awakes before the time and want to meet Bod in the chapel, it is clearly stated that he does not like the remnants of light (Gaiman 177). • 14. Poem Analysis Of Wilfred Owen Kavitha Vudatha Period 2B Wilfred Owen Poem Analysis Essay Wilfred Owen is a poet whose journey through life has molded him into a character of testimony and reality. From the early days of his childhood to his experiences in war, Owen has evolved into a poet who provides his altruistic view on life. His use of diction that emphasizes his theme of appearance/and or fate vs reality and the imagery that describes each scene with clarity and connection of Owen s spirit to his experiences in war, provides not only a peek into his life but his views on what he saw and what makes him unique. During his time serving in the war, Wilfred Owen was able to capture many ideas, concepts, and perceptions that cleverly portrayed into his poems. Even the Sassoon had an impression that Owen, no matter what, had complete dedication and he passionately wanted to survive the war, so that he might continue to write poetry.. he showed himself as ...an increasingly self critical one. Owen was quite dedicated to his work and he let nothing go past him. His sentiment to the war was a recurring speech that echoed his very thoughts. In one of his poems, the Sentry, Owens uses the words Hammered , choked , murk.. , and whizz bangs to establish the reality of war and what those soldiers are put through. This is in contrast with the word coaxing , which shifts the attention away from reality to more of Owen s altruism and appearance that the man is able to survive. The onomatopoeia used in the second stanza present a sudden push into reality, such as thud! Flump! Thud! . This sudden jump also supplies information on how difficult it was to navigate through the war zone. In the third stanza, Owen switches to a form of fate, in which he relates how this may have been the fate of the man. He forms these thoughts with words phrases such as wild chattering , crumps , Pummelled , or slogged the air , that imply how the feeling of dread metaphorically listens for these words before striking . The Sentry is quite different from any of the other poems that Wilfred Owen has written in that it seems to be centered around internal dialogue rather than just him laying out details and interpretations of events. Lab Report Titration Abstract: In this experiment, our team analyzed an unknown acid and a sample of vinegar solution by the process of titration using a 0.1 M sodium hydroxide solution as the titrant, as this solution is a strong base. In addition, our team members used phenolphthalein as indicator in the reaction. Introduction: First of all, for this experiment our team made use of several glassware, such as a buret, three 250 mL erlenmeyer flask, and a 10 mL flask. Additional, we also used a buret clamp, a plastic bottle with stopper, sodium hydroxide in form of pellets, potassium hydrogen phthalate (KHP), phenolphthalein as indicator, unknown acid and vinegar. The process of titration involves measuring the exact volume of the known concertation (which in this case is sodium hydroxide) that is required to react with a measured volume of an unknown concertation. Our team used sodium hydroxide, since it is a common solution used in titration analysis of samples containing a solute acid. Nevertheless, sodium hydroxide must be used quickly, since this solution can react with carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and its concentration will change with the time. In order to not add an excess of titrant than the necessary for the reaction, our team made use of phenolphthalein as indicator. This indicator in particular changes to a pale pink color from basic pH. On the other hand, we also titrated a sample of vinegar with the same sodium hydroxide solution, since vinegar is a dilute solution of acetic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Using the filibuster allowed Smith to speak for an unlimited amount of time. Cloture, or a vote of 60 senators or three fifths of the Senate, could have been used to stop the filibuster, but this was not depicted in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (Bardes 395). (Johnson, 2004) Stream Morphology: used to describe the shape of water channels and how they change over time through erosion, vegetation, and the availability and rate of sediment transport. (Hogan Luzi, 2010) Introduction Through the city of Waterloo flows a stream named Laurel Creek that originates from well north of the city, and as it flows into Silver Lake, it provides a home for many organisms both on land and in the water. This stream has been heavily influenced by human construction, and has a number of reservoirs along its path. As the water moves downstream towards more populated areas, it becomes a sink for waste coming from many sources along the way. To monitor the health of Laurel Creek, indicator species such as benthic invertebrates that reside in the water are collected to determine the current status of the stream. The purpose of this study is to determine the best location to collect samples of invertebrates in relationship to the stream morphology of Laurel Creek. The results from this study could then be used on other locations suffering the same problem in Waterloo. These areas can then be observed to determine if a solution can be found to decrease pollution, therefore decreasing the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Console manufacturer Sony have christened the PlayStation 2 s CPU the emotion engine . Clearly the gaming community understands the importance of emotion in games, so why do most games offer the player such a shallow emotional play experience? The reason is partly due to the relative immaturity of the games industry. Recognising the emotional state of the player There are various tools which can be used to determine the affective state of the game player. Researchers at MIT in Dublin have been investigating the use of galvanic skin response (GSR) to determine a player s state of arousal. Relax to Win is a therapeutic game where the player s level of relaxation controls the speed of a racing dragon. At the Interactive Institute in Stockholm, the player s brain activity is being measured by an electroencephalogram (EEG) in the game Brainball . This is a two player game where the direction of a steel ball is determined by each player s ability to meditate. An alternative method for recognising emotions using traditional console equipment is currently being investigated at Glasgow Caledonian University. Already, experiments have found that the affective state of the player can be determined by how they use the gamepad. Not only does the pressure of button depression indicate the level of player arousal, but also the rate at which a button is pressed and eventually released indicates the emotion felt by a player. You see, I was a very quiet and curious child who observed the world innocently with bright, untainted eyes. I didn t care much to be around the other children who were usually loud and somewhat bothersome, but I enjoyed being around adults. So when my mom would take me with her, the elderly people living there found much joy in having my company. The President spoke way too soon. A week later, the Shah s police shot down dozens of theology students in the holy city of Qom as they demonstrated against a scurrilous attack on the prominent Muslim cleric Ayatollah Khomeini in a pro government newspaper. The incident triggered off a year of growing protest that climaxed in a full blown revolution. The Shah s government collapsed. He was forced out of Iran and into exile. US relations with the new regime began to deteriorate speedily. The catalyst was the events that took place on 4 November, when, angered by the US government s decision to allow the exiled Shah into the US for cancer treatment, a mob of young Iranians, mostly radical university students and supporters of Ayatollah Khomeini, laid siege to the US Embassy in Tehran. In this essay, I will be talking about all the things that Jurgis as well as his family have overcome. Such as their downfalls as well as how they prospered and managed to stay together through most of the novel. Social Darwinism helps you get a different perspective of all the things going on in the societal classes. When someone has no motivation they really have no want to succeed. Being an immigrant and coming to the United States doesn t mean you re going to get rich at the instant. Even by working, you won t get at the level of the upper class rich people. Dishonesty is shown a lot among immigrants. Jurgis for example at the beginning of the novel had his family, his wife Ona, which made him the happiest man alive. No matter how rough the situation was he wouldn t care because he had his wife. Life put Jurgis through some pretty tough obstacles like the death of Ona and then shortly after the death of his baby. The so called real estate agent offered them a deal on this supposed great house that was cheap and exactly what they were looking for but little did Jurgis know that with that house came many more little pricy things that the agent forgot to tell them. Since that point on every day living in that house was hell. Everyone in that household worked and they barely made it through the month. Barely made it through with ... • 43. Anyone Lived In A Pretty How Town Summary In the poem, anyone lived in a pretty how town , author, E. E. Cummings sometimes uses words in very unusual ways. Line 7, which says they sowed their isn t they reaped their same is no exception (line 7). To start off we need to decipher who the they Cummings is talking about in this line. The they Cummings is talking about here is made known in line 5. Cummings points out that Women and men (both little and small) are the they who sowed their isn t and the they that reaped their same (line 5 7). If you think about line 7 from the farming standpoint you can infer that sow could mean to plant something and reap could mean to harvest what was planted. Now, let s talking about how they sowed their isn t (line 7). To sow something, you have to have a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A seed is something a farmer places in the ground in hope of it sprouting and becoming a plant. However, the seed isn t a plant just yet. Thinking about what seed women and men sow this part of the line could possibly be actually talking about children and how the women and the men sowed what doesn t exist quite yet a child! Moving forward, to the next part (and back in the farming mindset), they reaped their same (line 7). If you planted 7 tomato seeds you would expect 7 tomato plants to grow, not 4 tomato plants and 3 cucumber plants. Here, the same logic can apply. When the women and men plant their seeds (future children) and they sprout(are born) they raise them and grow them together and they all grow up to be the same uniform product. So in line 7 Cummings may be describing how in this little town the women and the men have children who all grow up to be the exact same, just like tiny little rows of tomatoes. In lines 19 20, Cummings states, they/said their nevers they slept their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Marilyn Frye The Politics Of Reality Summary The intentions of Feminism are still often misinterpreted even today in the twenty first century despite this being a modern era. Marilyn Frye s discussion on the role of women in society in the text The Politics of Reality focuses on her definition of oppression , its criteria and how it applies to feminist theory. Frye immediately opens her discussion with this statement; it is a fundamental claim of feminism that women are oppressed , (1983, p:1). It is important to note that she has used the word claim as it implies that the oppression of women is still a matter of debate. As a disclaimer, she makes it clear that the purpose of this text is not to prove that women are in fact oppressed, but to gain clarity on the meaning of the term ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Firstly, Frye discusses the etymology of the word oppression stating that it has its elements from the word press , 1983, p: 2. She then gives imagery in order to demonstrate that the word is very restrictive in nature as if something were; caught between or among forces and barriers which are so related to each other that jointly they restrain, restrict or prevent the thing s motion or mobility , (Frye, 1983, p:2). Frye makes the point that he first criterion in defining oppression is that the oppressed is restricted or limited in some manner, giving the sense that they have been moulded, immobilised or reduced. She exemplifies this notion with the following comparison using her theory of the double bind theory. According to Frye, in the United States, young women, are locked in a bind where if they exhibit that they are heterosexually active, then she is explicitly regarded as loose, unprincipled or a whore , 1983, p:2. The woman may then feel that she must hide her behaviour from her parents who are likely to look down on her for her promiscuity. She will also face criticism by her peers as being an easy lay and put down in comparison to her friends who practise more restraint, (Frye, 1983, p:3). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
