This document provides a biography of Saint Lucy, a Christian martyr from Syracuse, Sicily who lived in the 3rd century AD. It describes key events in her life story, including that she came from a wealthy family, dedicated her virginity to Christ against her mother's wishes to marry her off, used her wealth to help the poor, was denounced to the authorities for being Christian, underwent torture for her faith but remained resolute, and was ultimately martyred by having her throat cut. The document also mentions the historical evidence that confirms her existence and the spread of devotion to her as a saint in both the Eastern and Western churches since ancient times.

VIRGIN AND MARTYR
December 13th
2. With the discovery, made in 1894, of the sepulchral inscription on
the "loculus" or tomb of the saint in the catacombs of Syracuse, the
historicity of the young martyr Lucia was confirmed. The inscription
dates back to the beginning of the fifth century, one hundred years
after this glorious martyr of Syracuse gave witness to Christ.
3. Her fame and
devotion are due
in large part to
the legend of her
Passion, written
later in the 5th
century
4. Epigraphs, inscriptions and the same ancient liturgical memory
show the devotion from ancient times, which very soon
spread not only in the West, but also in the East.
5.
6. the introduction of the name of Saint Lucia in the Canon
of the Mass is probably due to Pope Gregory the Great
7. Lucia belonged to
a rich family from
Syracuse. Her mother,
Eutiquia, when she
became a widow,
wanted to marry her
daughter to a young
countryman. Lucia, who
had made a vow of
virginity for Christ's
sake, got the wedding
postponed, because her
mother had become
seriously ill.
8. Devoted to Saint Agatha, the martyr of
Catania, who had lived half a century earlier,
she wanted to take her sick mother to the
saint's tomb. From this pilgrimage her
mother returned completely cured and so she
allowed her daughter to follow the path she
desired of consecrating herself to the Lord,
and allowing her to give her rich dowry
to the poor of the city.
9. The rejected boyfriend took revenge by
accusing Lucia before the proconsul
Pascasio of being a Christian.
10. Lucia was arrested under,
accused of being a Christian,
Pascasio ordered her to
make sacrifices to the gods.
Then Lucia said:
"Pure sacrifice before God is
to visit widows, orphans and
pilgrims who live in anguish
and need. This is now my
third year that I offer
sacrifices to God in Jesus
Christ, surrendering
all my belonging" .

de su dote a los pobres
11. Pascasio was vexed,… he turned to Lucia saying: "I will take you to a place of
perdition so the Holy Spirit will abandon you." The soldiers took hold of her to
carry her. They tied her with ropes hands and feet, but no matter how hard
they tried they could not move her: the girl remained rigid as a rock.
12. Upon learning of what had happened, Pascasio ordered
her to be subjected to torture with oil and boiling fish,
but he couldn't make her give up. She condemned to
be martyred, she before dying she prophesied her
canonizationof her and her patronage as protector of
Syracuse, along with the fall of Diocletian and Maximian
13. A blow from the sword wounded Lucia, but even with her throat
cut, the young woman continued to exhort the faithful to put
their duties towards God before those of creatures.
14. She was buried in the same place where a sanctuary dedicated to her
was built in 313. It was the destination of pilgrimages in her honor.
According to tradition, her story was spread throughout Sicilyː
"she consecrated her virginity with her martyrdom, because
our purity and holiness pleases God. "
16. The Scandinavian Catholic, Orthodox and Lutheran Churches celebrate their feast on
December 13. - In Sweden - girls dress as "Lucia" (wearing a long white dress and a
crown of seven candles on her head) and boys as "stjärngossar" ("boys with stars“),
due to the pointed hat decorated with stars that they use.
18. The cupcakes are
presented also
to the school
teachers, judges
and politicians of
the region to
wish them luck
and so that they
may be fair in
their work.
19. One girl in particular is chosen as "Queen Lucia of Sweden"
(Sveriges Lucia) and is crowned on December 13 in Skansen.
20. According to legend, the Byzantine general Jorge Mariace transfered the body of Saint Lucia of
Syracuse to Constantinople (1039), to save it from in the period of invasion of the city of Syracuse
by the Saracens. During the Fourth Crusade (1204), the Duke of Venice, Enrico Dandolo, found the
remains of the Saint in Constantinople, took them to Venice to the monastery of Saint George, and
in 1280, had them transferred to the Church dedicated to her in Venice (today in S Jeremias).
21. Church of Saints Geremia and Lucia - Venice
Precious Reliquary of Saint Lucy.
The Body of Saint Lucia, a Syracusan martyr (+ 13-12-203),
miraculously preserved intact to this day, after being given to
Constantinople (1040) it was again brought to Italy during the IV
Crusade. Venice has jealously guarded it
for more than seven centuries.
23. Some say that Saint Lucia saved Syracuse many times in dramatic moments such as
famines, earthquakes and wars, and that she has also intervened in other cities
such as Brescia which, thanks to her intercession, was liberated from great misery.
In 1955, at the express wish of Patriarch Cardinal Roncalli (future John XXIII),
the saint's face was covered with a silver mask.
