Short Essay About Smoking
Writing an essay on the topic "Short Essay About Smoking" can be a challenging task, requiring
a delicate balance of factual information, persuasive elements, and a coherent structure. The
difficulty arises not only from the need to present a compelling argument against smoking but
also from the responsibility to convey the harmful effects of this habit concisely. One must
navigate through a plethora of statistics, medical findings, and societal perspectives while
maintaining clarity and coherence in the narrative.
Additionally, crafting an engaging and thought-provoking introduction to capture the reader's
attention poses its own set of challenges. The opening must set the tone for the essay,
establishing the significance of the issue and piquing the reader's interest to encourage them to
continue.
The body of the essay requires careful organization of ideas and evidence, highlighting the
various aspects of smoking, including health risks, economic implications, and societal impacts.
Transitioning smoothly between these different aspects can be tricky, demanding a thorough
understanding of the subject matter.
Furthermore, addressing counterarguments and potential objections in a fair and persuasive
manner adds complexity to the writing process. Striking a balance between presenting a strong
case against smoking and acknowledging opposing viewpoints is crucial for a well-rounded and
credible essay.
Concluding the essay with a powerful summary that reinforces the key points while leaving a
lasting impression requires finesse. The conclusion should leave the reader with a sense of
urgency or reflection, compelling them to reconsider their views on smoking.
In conclusion, writing a short essay about smoking involves navigating a maze of information,
organizing thoughts coherently, and persuading the reader effectively. It demands a nuanced
approach to presenting facts, tackling counterarguments, and leaving a lasting impact on the
audience.

The Training Of An Army Basic Training Failure
Growing up the daughter of an Army Basic Training failure was an embarrassment
for quite some time. My father went to Basic Training straight out of high school,
came back shortly after leaving. He was discharged for injuries of his knees; he
was weak. One would not assume a child of someone who failed Basic Training
would be eager to go, however, I knew it was my time when I received a call from a
recruiter asking me to come in. It was my chance to show my dad who I am
without him, as well as fight for my country. I conquered Basic Training the
summer in between the end of my junior, and the start of my senior year, at the age
of seventeen. Even with the extra motivation, Basic Training was no easy task.
There are four steps to Basic Training: two flights, reception, training, and
graduation. May 31st, the day my family and I had been waiting for, ship day. I woke
up at 3:30 a.m. to fly to Missouri. I left with two other people: Boone and Hiple.
Boone was 18, he had graduated from high schooltwo weeks prior to shipping out for
Basic Training. He would go straight through Basic and onto Advanced Individual
Training (AIT); while both Hiple and I will go through Basic. Then next year, to
continue our journey in the U.S. Army, the two of us, accompanied by others, will
leave for AIT. That morning a recruiter dropped us off at the airport, our families
came back with us through security and waited with us for our flight. I was of course
stopped through security,
Reflection On Thabo Sefolosha s Life
It was a warm spring night in April 2015 when Thabo Sefolosha s life changed
forever on hours after a Knick Hawks game. Sefolosha and his former teammate,
Pero Antic, had a run in with the New York police outside of celebrity haunt 1 Oak
nightclub. The police were investigating an unrelated incident involving former NBA
player Chris Copeland, who was stabbed outside the nightclub in a separate incident.
What happened next is still mired in mystery and controversy.
According to reports, the club was shut down due to the stabbing of Copeland a
few blocks away. As Sefolosha and Antic made their way to the exits, the police
were aggressively pushing club goers and demanding that they walk in a particular
direction. As Sefolosha and Antic made their way outside to wait for a car service,
that s when the incident took place. An officer allegedly harassed the Hawks players,

We were two weeks from the playoffs, and I wasn t able to play. Long term, I m still
struggling with it. My ankle is still bothering me, it s just something that I will have

this for the rest of my life.
Police brutality has been a much discussed topic in this country, but the problem still
persists. What do you think about this issue that has plagued the nation?
It s terrible, you know. It s a thin line because it s a dangerous country. They have a
hard job but the part for me that is more troubling is that it s very little

just act that way because they have a badge. If you let them get away with a slap on
the wrist they re going to keep doing it. It s troubling to me.
The 2016 Presidential election was one of the most controversial elections in history

not look like gods, but like real human beings. Hoffman, who was an actor first, star

them. He once said, One of the things that constantly hits me is that when I go

previous four days demonstrations and looting, out of 118 arrested, more than half
were black. According to Lord Scarman, appointed to chair the public inquiry into
this riot, he calls them an out bust of anger and resentment by young black people
against the police (Calvin, 2016).
Ethnic and communities criminalization finds its roots in 1960 when a report to the
West Indian standing council alleged that the police indulged in practices they
referred as nigger hunting (Weichselbaum, 2001; Hussain Bagguley, 2012). It
showed the pre existing beliefs about their supposed criminality. Black people are
subject to extraordinary policing, and the media, politician and criminal justice

It is an axiom of the liberal culture in policing that the police use of force should be
essential (Mohan, 2015; Widdup Davenport, 2009). In 1991 according to Institute
of Race Relations Paper, there were 16 cases of blacks highly reported between
1969 to 1991 in custody (Bowling Phillips, 2003). The maximum force was used to
blacks than others causing these numbers to increase, recently in the UK, the
number of people who have died in custody has increased by 32% in the previous
year, to add on that the majority of those who die to consist of blacks and ethnic
minorities (Hannan et al., 1998).
Religious discrimination has been another issue, Muslim in the United Kingdom
have been victims of negative perceptions. Since 9/11 and 7/7 people developed
islamophobia culture (O Brien Kevin, 2003). Social psychology research suggests
that there is nothing that in principle prevents the likelihood, given certain
circumstance of any group becoming perpetrators of unfair treatment by religion
(Calvin, 2016). The over presentation of islamophobia culture by the media become
a moral panic over world (Grobler, 2013). Police view Islam as individuals with
devious minds, prone to radicalizations and terrorists. A fairly consistent body of
research shows that relative to other religious groups in Britain, Muslim report and
experience discrimination of high magnitude than any other religious groups (Grobler,
Comparing Dante Alighieri s Inferno And The Faerie
Queene
Both Dante Alighieri s Inferno and Edmund Spenser s The Faerie Queene depict
wooded forests wrought with transformed men as trees. In the Inferno and The Faerie
Queene an existential conundrum of compromised identities leaves Pier della Vigne
and Fraudubio sans human choice. Dehumanized and disfigured, the individuals that
comprise the trees still retain human qualities like talking, breathing, and, even,
bleeding under certain circumstances. Within each space, whether it is considered a
definite locus amoenus or a locus horribilis, the most significant human attribute to
which these trees cling is bleeding and thus they have a small handful of feelings and
emotions still within each of them. Instead of their ripped branches symbolizing
death and decay, the breaking of the branches within Inferno13 and The Faerie
Queene1.2, give the trees life as if nothing has changed. While the bleeding infers a
loss of identity in both, redeemable only for one of the two, it also lets their stories
be told. Their stories, sad in nature, have redemptive qualities and move the two
pilgrims that listen to their doleful tales. The Inferno illustrates the journey of Dante
the pilgrim as he travels through the nine circles of Hell wherein each circle
objectifies a specific sin like lust, gluttony, greed or violence; there the sinners endure
eternal punishment. In the seventh circle, the circle of violence, Dante interacts with
the suicides and profligates. Condemned to live eternally as

famous report of the Inter Departmental Committee on Social Insurance and Allied

This was the only change that proved more giving; all other changes were less
giving. Benefits for the unemployed were not discarded but were only to last for 30
weeks. Marriage and training grants for the self employed were discarded, and most
importantly, the scale of the payments received from the contributory scheme fell
below the minimum needed for continuation. This resulted in the need for national
assistance being means tested, this over the years grew more and more important,
which was not what Beveridge had intended. Now, the benefits for the unemployed,
more commonly known as Job Seekers Allowance are calculated annually as to what
a person can claim in a week. On June 29, 2009 the maximum payable was ВЈ65.45
per week for a person aged over 25, ВЈ53.45 per week for a person aged 18 24. The
rules for couples where both are unemployed are more complex, but a maximum of
ВЈ102.75 per week is payable, dependent on age and other factors. (Benefit Tax
Credit Rates 2006). The system now is a lot more complex and intricate and
although a lot of people rely on the benefit system for survival, poverty is still an
enormous issue as it was in the 1940 s. Other acts which were put in place to tackle
want/poverty include the Family Allowances Act and the National Assistance Act
So how did the Labour Government tackle the other four giants? There were policy
initiatives put in place relating to each giant individually. For

Pentatonix recently released a new single of John Legend s Imagine on their

then would hand it over to the next person with that label that also describes them
but they would then flip the cardboard over to reveal a new word. The chain
continues showing that one person may be American and Jewish, but someone else
is American and Black. Then to complete their message at the end of the song each
member holds up a piece of cardboard together spelling out Human. The group

This video is meant to unite the world and add support to the fight against
discrimination, yes, everyone is different and unique, but their point is that despite all
the differences everyone is still human and that is what unites us as the human race.
Argument 1:
The world we live in today is extremely diverse and with such diversity, stereotypes
arise in order to organize people into groups, these stereotypes as argued by many
commenters are meaningless. As mentioned in the video we are all human and the
labels people identify themselves with are transparent and the human aspect is what
counts. This idea that divine or social matters are not of utmost importance relays
back to the ideals of humanism, an idea, stating.
Humanism is a democratic and ethical life stance that affirms that human beings have
the right and responsibility to give meaning and shape to their own lives. Humanism
stands for the building of a more humane society
Caregif s Social Services Case Study
It s not wrong to expect your mother in law to pay 1/3 of household expense,
groceries, utilities, toiletries out of her SSI but your mother in law has to give a
consent or authorize to use her SSI. It s true that caregivers who attempt to balance
caregiving with their other activities, such as work, family, and leisure, may find it
difficult to focus on the positive aspects of caregiving and often experience more
negative reactions, such as an increased sense of burden. Regardless of the amount
of care provided, caregivers may become increasingly more distressed if they are
unable to participate in valued activities and interests. Caregivers who are employed

will mean less measuring and cutting will occur, ensuring less mistakes and faster
building. Workers will still need to cut it to size so it will fit snuggly around
obstructions (including plumbing and electrical). Insulation used in this house has a

Sandpaper will also be useful in the small corners.

the seams to create a smoother affect. Paper tape is less costly and faster to use.
Next another layer of drywall compound is then placed over the surface to hold it in

Disadvantages And Disadvantages Of Appeasement
Appeasement The bigger the stage, the riskier it gets
Appeasement , can be seen at work in our daily lives, both at individual and group
levels. At an individual level, it is often witnessed within families and at places of
work. At a group level, appeasement of communities, sects, counties, countries, etc. is
an omnipresent reality of today s world. While most such acts are targeted at calming
down a seemingly volatile situation, the majority of them do not aim to benefit all the
parties involved i.e. the appeased party, the appeasing party or the appeaser and the
third parties affected by the agreement between the former two but not directly

is a much debated issue across the globe. In our own country, the continuous
appeasement of minorities or backward communities for vote bank politics has
gradually established itself as a deep rooted cancer in our society. Every couple of
years, a backward group rises above the rest of the groups and holds the country for
ransom to gain reservations in educational institutes and government jobs. There are
widespread killings, looting and arson until the central government bends to the
unjust demands of the protesting community and surrenders. Unfortunately, this
becomes a vicious cycle and emboldens other people with a common grouse to
demand reservations, statehood, favours, etc. The appeaser i.e. the government
remains a spectator for most of the period but eventually ends up on the losing side
whereas the appeased party i.e. the protesting group usually ends up on the winning
side. However, the biggest losers are the rest of the people (third party) who have
nothing to do with the issue. Badly hit road and train travel, exorbitantly costly air
travel, electricity / water crisis, postponement of exams / interviews, collateral
damage in terms of killings and loss of income, etc. are few of the problems that
people face due to the standoff between the government and the protesters.
Appeasement in such cases creates unsettling, volatile calm cycles of unrest and
peace. It

Massachusetts country was colonized by the English as well. The Puritans was living

people called the pilgrims sailed away from the country to start a new life of their
own religion. On their journey, the first year of settling, the settlers lost some of the
pilgrims because of the disease spreading. In the early time period, the English
colonies of Massachusetts and Virginia was created by the same group of people.
Their differences and similarities begins when looking into the religious, political and
social development.
The colonies Virginia and Massachusetts had two good thing in common. When
referring to religious manners the common factors they shared was the version of
Christianity and its freedom. The colonists in Jamestown was members of the
Anglican faith group. This group was the official Church of England and Christianity.

The Ballad Of Birmingham Poem
Boom! Imagine, in the blink of an eye, everything in your world has fallen apart.
Your child s soul is sucked out of her body by a stranger your child has never met
before. Imagine your child making world news and being put in history books
because of the evil negligence of another fellow American. This reality was true for
the families of the victims in the Ballad of Birmingham poem.
In my opinion, this is a well structured essay by Dudley Randall which describes
minutes before an innocent girl dies in one of the most unimaginable ways. I believe
losing her child is a hard thing for a mother to go through. I enjoy the end rhyme and
the ability for the audience to understand the poem s composition. I do not like the

She sent her child to sing in the choir, in hopes she would be safe in God s
tabernacle, but instead, the child went to the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church death
trap. Secondly, I disagree with the way Dudley Randall ended the poem. Even
though the reader can assume what happened to the child, the poem slightly leaves
you with a cliffhanger. The child s lifeless body cannot be found by her desperate
and destitute mother. The audience can be left feeling melancholy and incomplete.
Lastly, Randall, in my opinion, strategically wrote stanza five in the poem very
well, She has combed and brushed her night dark hair, And bathed rose petal sweet,
And drawn white gloves on her small brown hands, And white shoes on her feet
(Randall 19). Lastly, the white gloves and white shoes represent purity and
innocence of the adolescent. The way the little girl brushes her black hair and bathes
in sweet aromas represents the child s vulnerability and how sweet the little things are
in life.
Dudley Randall was born in early 1914 in Washington, D.C. but later migrated to
Detroit, Michigan in 1920 (Madgett). At the young age of thirteen, Dudley Randall
wrote his first poem. During the span of his life, he has written poems such as

HOMOSEXUAL RELATIONSHIP
HOMOSEXUAL RELATIONSHIP
It takes great courage to say, I am a homosexual. It needs even greater humbleness to

of the homosexual behavior generates an obvious question in my mind as to why
society looks down upon deviant sexual orientations like homosexuality. Is it because
the homosexuals behave in a way which is not normal, or which is not practiced by
the bulk ? Or is it because the bulk tries to ignore the harsh trutha truth which attacks

It also serves to contest the pervasive heterosexist attitudes that dismiss gay/lesbian
/bisexual women and men as the embodied imperfections of Westernisation.
In India there exists sufficient documentary, archaeological and anthropological
evidences to suggest that same sex ties especially among men, were not only
culturally, but dignified and revered by attributing similar traits to religious deities.
The homoerotic carvings among the erotic carvings on the Hindu temples of
Khajuraho in Konark and Puri; and on the great Buddhist monument at Borabordur in
Indonesia are well known. The Kamasutra mentions a number of homosexual
positions in chapter 8th of part III. Indian kings also tended to have a number of boys
in their harems.
Nevertheless, today the most shameful fact is that there are many incidents for the
harassment of homosexuals. These incidents of harassment of the homosexual
community and social discrimination in India remain widespread despite years of
campaigning by sexually rights groups in the country. The biggest hurdle faced by
the campaign to fight discrimination based on sexual orientation in India is section
377 of the Indian Penal Code, which criminalizes unnatural sex. The law, a remnant
of Victorian morality, was made in 1860, when any sexual activity that was not meant
for procreation was considered a sin.
It is the time for us to change our perceptions and visualizations vis Г vis same sex

Career And Interest Self-Assessment Results
Self Assessment I.Career and Interest Self assessment Results This self assessment
test was something that narrowed down possible interest and helped the
participants open their mind to new careers. In fact when I finished my test I was
able to view the different careers that feel in my interest category. Taking a survey
and calculating the different likes each field had accumulated determined my test
outcome. After gathering the likes that had accumulated I was able to determine
which inventory category was strongest. My top inventory was conventional
which states, I am one who likes to follow set rules and procedures, and prefers
detail and clear lines of authority (Self Assessment, n.d.). My second strongest
inventory category was Social, which states, I like work activities that promote
learning and development (Self Assessment, n.d.). Not only did I learn what my
strongest inventory was I also had the ability to learn which jobs fell under those
categories. Out of each category within the level 5 education requirement, I had one
job that stood out over the others; category one conventional had Math Professor.
This job is something that would be interesting, but I am not sure if I would want

Noise in Electronic Communications Systems
An additive noise is characteristic of almost all communication systems. This additive
noise typically arises from thermal noise generated by random motion of electrons in
the conductors comprising the receiver. In a communication system the thermal noise
having the greatest effect on system performance is generated at and before the first
stage of amplification. This point in a communication system is where the desired
signal takes the lowest power level and consequently the thermal noise has the
greatest impact on the performance. This characteristic is discussed in more detail in
Chapter 10. This chapter s goal is to introduce the mathematical techniques used by
communication system engineers to characterize and predict the... Show more content

It turns out that W(t) is accurately characterized as a stationary, Gaussian, and white
random process. Consequently, our first task is to define a random process
(Section 9.1). The exposition of the characteristics of a Gaussian random process
(Section 9.2) and a stationary Gaussian random process (Section 9.3) then will
follow. A brief discussion of the characteristics of thermal noise is then followed
by an analysis of stationary random processes From this point forward in the text
the experimental outcome index will be dropped and random processes will be
represented as N(t). EXAMPLE 9.1 A particular random process is defined as N(t)
= U exp[в€’|t|] + V (9.1) where U and V are independent random variables. It is
clear that with each sample value of the random variables U(П‰) and V (П‰)
there will be a time function N(t, П‰). This example of a random process is not
typical of a noise process produced in real communication systems but it is an
example process that proves insightful as we develop tools to characterize noise in
communications. EXAMPLE 9.2 A noise generator and a lowpass filter are
implemented in Matlab with a sample rate of 22,050 kHz. Recall each time Matlab
is run this is equivalent to a different experiment outcome, i.e., a different П‰. A
sample path of the input noise to the filter, W(t), and a sample path at the output of
the filter, N(t), is shown in Figure 9.3 for a filter with a bandwidth of 2.5 kHz. It is
How Does Std Affect Our Society
Currently, in our nation, there is a nationwide epidemic of sexually transmitted
diseases(STD) caused by a lack of carefulness and overall disregard for general
health and sexual standards. Americans have been engaged in premarital sex at an
increasing rate since 2004 with 94% of the interviewed population stating they
have had sex before marriage. This increase in pleasure sex has exposed much of
America to STD s and the resulting outbreak has been catastrophic. With an average
of one out of four people carrying an STD even though they may not possess the
symptoms, they pass it on through the increase in sexual behavior. If we as a nation
work together to increase sexual standards and promote safe sex, then we can control
this outbreak... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The passage of many STDs such as gonorrhea, genital herpes, human papillomavirus
infection, HIV/AIDS, chlamydia, and syphilis are caused mainly by unprotected sex,
however few rare cases have been known to be spread through osculation, without
social standards in place to enforce the views of a structural functionalist, social or
pleasure sex will continue to be widely abused and unprotected.
Thirdly, If one has an STD and its publicly known, that individual s social status is
degraded and negatively affected. In society as a whole concealing an STD
creates a false sense of security and attempts to preserve a faulty self image. Along
with merely keeping an STD a secret many are too embarrassed to even get tested
after unprotected sex with a mentality that what they do not know will not hurt them.
This alone has a major sociological implication as it reinforces a negative social
construct and creates a poor symbolic representation of STD testing to displeasure
rather than emotional relief. In order to influence the proper usage of regular testing
after practicing unsafe sex it must be shown that the alternative leads to social
distress in that untested individual live their days without knowledge of major health
issues where untested STDs cannot be treated causing visual displeasure such as
unexplained skin lesions that may influence one to be self conscious progressing to
sickness and self
The Philosophy Of Ubuntu
In the beginning of this module I knew the importance of language in the sense of
its importance for communication with people and the world. I have always loved
to tell stories and being able to write down what I had to say was made possible
through language. Language has always been important to me. I just never knew that
language can have such a major impact on my identity and that it has had a far more
important influence on life than people give it credit for.
I have learned that and important aspect of language is that it reflects who we are,
in other words, our identity. Language is a process of questions and answers
through which we make our identity, believes and ideals known to the people we
come into contact with in our own and other societies. I think that our ability to show
people who we are as a person gives us the opportunity to spread the kindness which
is part of the philosophy, Ubuntu. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It has the power to change the identity of the nation. I believe that a philosophy like
Ubuntu should be taught to all, because in a diverse nation like ours it is important
that everyone s identity is accepted and treated with kindness and humanity. We are
all vastly different and still the same, because we all live in the same South Africa
and with the same diversity. I think that we are extremely privileged to have grown
up and to live in a country with so many languages and cultures. We should all learn
to appreciate it and respect the unique diversity of South Africa, and that is why a
philosophy like Ubuntu is important to teach and live

Evaluate the merits and demerits of fixed and floating exchange rate regimes.
Provide examples to support your arguments. I. Intro Floating exchange rates and
fixed exchange rates each provide distinct advantages and disadvantages for a given
regime. In any given state of the global economy, one given country may be better
suited for one system. But there are a number of factors that influence this, and
there is therefore no universal correct system for all international economies. I will
discuss the merits and demerits of a floating exchange rate, providing the examples
of the US Government response to the 2008 financial crisis and the excessive
speculation that led to the 1929 stock market crash. These examples will illustrate a
time when the US economy benefitted due to a floating exchange rate and a time
when the US economy suffered due to a floating exchange rate. I will then provide a
similar analysis for the fixed exchange rate using the same example of the dangers of
speculation regarding the 1929 financial crash and the emerging market crisis of
Argentina in 2001. As mentioned before, there is no universal solution to the
monetary policy governing exchange rates. A general rule, however, is that floating
exchange rates provide a country with more adaptability and independence in
fluctuating international economic circumstances. But they can lead to instability,
needlessly expansionary policy and excessive speculation. Fixed exchange rates, in
contrast, are
The Geneva Conventions And Utilitarianism
The Geneva Conventions embody strongly felt humanitarian ideals which is the main
source of their legitimacy. These treaties allow the international community to work
together and agree on certain standards of war and human rights. The Geneva
Conventions are an important aspect to the field of international relations. These
treaties embody the commonly felt humanitarian ideals of the majority of the world,
which proves that the international community can work together and agree on
human rights. This element of teamwork across the international community
contributes to the idealist view of international relations. The idealist view claims that
ideas and traditions are what brings countries together, ends war, and facilitates
globalization; typically laws and traditions vary per state, but sometimes they can
transcend borders.
Similarly, this teamwork emphasizes community values and traditions. While... Show

This is called the state of exception and its biggest flaw is that it is so often abused.
It is abused because situations in which it is used are all different and the state can
argue that it should remain in the state of exception for longer than others might
deem necessary. (Scheppele, Journal of Constitutional Law). The state of exception
is an example of the decline in respect for international law because it gives a
temporarily vulnerable state the ability to evade otherwise accepted international
norms without a deadline for taking things back to the way they were (Scheppele,
Journal of Constitutional Law). This decline in respect for international law is caused
by the rise of non state actors, like multinational corporations and terrorist

Essay about Battle of the Somme
The Battle of the Somme epitomizes the harsh realities of trench warfare for the
Allies and represents the negligent battle planning and technological advancements
that are associated with the stalemate of World War One. Trench warfare was
common across the Western Front, with similar strategies being employed by both
opposing sides. Sir Douglas Haig, one of the British coordinators for the Somme
offensive is blamed with an offensive strategy destined for failure. The British
offensive, an utter failure, resulted in a stalemate, which was common throughout
World War One. The British development of the tank, while it eventually ended the
horrendous stalemate, was ineffectively used during the Somme.

The British went into the Somme with a mixed attack plan, which led to an
unsuccessful first assault resulting in a battle of attrition. The opening day of The
Battle of the Somme resulted in near 60,000 casualties for the British, the largest in
British military history for a single day. Originally the Somme was supposed to be a
French dominated offensive, however the Germans attacked to the South in Verdun
occupying the majority of French troops. The British were then thrust into control
of the offensive, leaving Sir Douglas Haig and General Rawlinson to arrange an
offensive strike against the Germans. Haig advocated for the use of infantry
including foot soldiers as well as cavalry to lead the offensive. Rawlinson countered
with a bite and hold strategy, which involved fortifying a strong defense and warding
off German counter attacks. Rather than committing to one strategy, the two were
combined in order to create a week long bombardment followed by an offensive
attack on foot.
The offensive was planned on a strict time table, as Haig did not trust those who
were considered volunteer soldiers. This quote demonstrates Haig s disdain towards
those who did not have significant military training, He tended to disdain and to
suspect the motives of people who could not properly govern themselves. (Johnson).
As a result of his dislike towards the volunteer army he designed the offensive so
Salt Lake City Ethical Issues
Although the Salt Lake City Olympics are remembered as one of the greatest in
history, there were a few ethical and moral issues that surrounded the Olympic
Games in 2002. When looking back at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games, two
incidents stand out as being the worst ethical offenses related to the Games. First,
there was the problem leading up to the Olympics involving former members of
the Salt Lake City Olympic Committee bribing the International Olympic
Committee with gifts to win the vote as the host city for the 2002 Games. The
second moral and ethical problem arose at the judges table during one of the figure
skating events. Salt Lake City continues to pride itself on its Olympic success, and
it is well deserved, but when analyzing the hidden affairs associated with the Games
that year a couple problems are evident. In 1998, an unethical offense broke out that
almost damaged the future of the Olympics. Former president of the Salt Lake City
Olympic Committee (SLCOC), Thomas Welch, and former vice president of the

ability to increase understanding of HL knowledge, tests and surveys will be
administered throughout the program. A survey that determines how competent
students are in regards to race and culture will be administered at the beginning of the

Reflection On Group Reflection
Group Reflection
Renae Van Der Linden
Roberts Wesleyan College Group Reflection When leading a group, it is important to
understand what the overall goal should be, as well as understanding what the group
expectations are. Knowing what the group goals and expectations are provides a
basic outline of what the group dynamic should be. Additionally, the goals and group
expectations should be discussed with the group members, providing the opportunity
to share their input and possibly even make changes to what the facilitator believes
the group goal(s) or expectations should be.
The goal for the psychoeducational group based on mindfulness was to: define
mindfulness, share various mindfulness skills, discuss the applicability of
mindfulness, and practice a few of the mindfulness skills. Aside from these goals,
which were created for the specific group session that was led in class, there are
also goals of psychoeducation as a whole. The purpose of psychoeducation is to
share information with group members about a particular topic. Related to that topic,
skills should be built upon. Psychoeducation not only provides group members to
share their personal experiences related to the group s topic, but also to teach the
group members how to create their own support system outside of the group (Corey,
2016).
Overall, I felt as though the goals of the group on mindfulness were accomplished,
as well as the goals of psychoeducation as a whole. Whitney and I were able to share
information on mindfulness with the class, which included the definition, skills,
applicability, and examples of mindfulness, encompassing the goal for the particular
session that was led. Furthermore, I felt as though the group members were able to
share their personal experiences related to mindfulness and were even able to create
their own techniques and skills that can be implemented to reach the desired goal of
mindfulness in their personal lives.
Even though a few group members openly shared what they like to do to stay
mindful, one way to engage the group a little more would have been to go around
and ask members to share, if they felt comfortable, what they like to do to attain
mindfulness. Opening this door to the conversation
How Does Social Security Help To Underdeveloped Poor...
Picture years down the road, you are trying to get ahead in life, but debt continues
to drag you down. A family to provide for and someone is constantly breathing
down your neck to pay your debts. Can you imagine the sudden relief, of your debt
being paid, every hard earned penny being your own, and finally your family having
enough food on the table.
Now lets apply this to underdeveloped poor countries. As the country struggles to get
ahead, international lenders drown them in their overwhelming debt, preventing them
from every rising to the surface.
Thus my first contention is Mercy. Mercy is having compassion or forgiveness
shown toward someone whom it is within one s power to punish or harm. As God
has mercy on us, we should have mercy on others. God commands us to be perfect,
holy, and righteous, but these traits are unattainable and God sovereignly
understands, daily pouring His mercy out on us. By the same token, indebted poor
countries cannot live up to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

you just lost your job. What are you going to do? If you are an American, social
security may help to soften the financial nose dive. The definition of social security
according to Merriam Webster is: A program in which the government provides
money to people who are unable to work because they are old, disabled, or
unemployed. This is the highest act of humaneness. How does this apply to our
resolution? As an American, you cannot be against removing the debt of highly
indebted countries unless you also condemn social security. Social security is there to
soften the blow of individuals with health problems, unemployment, and old age. If
social security wasn t there, what would these individuals do? Go into debt, for they
simply cannot work. Thus international lenders parallel social security, the main
difference they demand a return
The Electoral System Of New Zealand Essay
The government in New Zealand is chosen via an electoral system, which currently
is the Mixed Member Proportional (MMP) system. In simple terms, an electoral
system is a key component in making a government. Prime Ministers are only
successful under the MMP system if they have the required qualities that are needed.
This essay will talk about one such Prime Minister namely Helen Clark. Further, it
will provide an insight to the MMP electoral system as opposed to the First Past the
Post (FPP) electoral system. The essay will then differentiate between the required
leadership qualities under MMP and FPP electoral systems. The essay will also
shower some light on Helen Clark s leadership under the MMP electoral system. It
will then conclude by determining whether Helen Clark was successful under MMP
or not and whether she possessed the required qualities of successful prime ministerial
leadership under MMP system.
To start with, Mixed Member Proportional electoral system was chosen by the legal
voters of New Zealand in a binding referendum that was initially started in 1992,
where it obtained an astonishing 85% support. The second electoral referendum
was carried out in 1993 and MMP got 54% support. Upon this referendum, New
Zealand s new electoral system was embraced. (The Road to MMP 2012, p. 3) Prior
to 1993, the predominantly used electoral system was the First Past the Post system.
Under the FPP system, each voter has one vote and the candidate who receives the

The Endocrine System
Starting in the head and neck area one will find the hypothalamus, pineal gland,
parathyroid glands, pituitary gland, and thyroid gland. Some of the functions of the
hypothalamus, which is part of the brain, are to regulate body temperature, thirst,
sleep, mood, hunger, and the release of other hormones in the body. The function
pineal gland is to control circadian and circannual rhythms, and the release of
melatonin. The function of the parathyroid glands is to mainly to control calcium
levels in the body. The functions of the pituitary gland secrete various hormones for
various functions. The function of the thyroid gland is to increase the metabolic rate
to speed digestion. Now that the endocrine glands of the head and neck area have
been introduced, now the glands of the upper and lower torso will be introduced and
overviewed. The endocrine gland located in the upper torso is the thymus gland, in
the lower torso the adrenal glands, pancreas, and testis/ovaries can be found. The
function of the thymus gland is to stimulate the production and maturation of T
Lymphocytes. The functions of the adrenal glands are the raising of glucose levels,
the reabsorption of sodium and the excretion of potassium, and the stimulating of
reproductive organs that bring about sex characteristics. The function of pancreas is
to regulate blood glucose levels. And finally the function of the testis/ovaries is to
stimulate sex characteristics. All of these glands make up the Endocrine System.
Examples Of Personal Reflection
With my sound projected I hope to convey the idea that an individual will face a
multitude of different challenges throughout their lives, but one must use those
challenges and failure as a means of motivation in order to reach your goals. There
will be individual who will bring you down in your life and you may not have the
support you need at time but you just have to keep progressing and focusing on
yourself. In order to properly project this I used various affordances of soundthat help
meeffectively tell the story for the listener. I also included voices to help tell the
story and set the tone for the listener as we progress through the different phases of
the individual s life. I tried to set a serious tone by showing the change in voice of
the individuals speaking to the person we follow throughout the project. For
instance, when we first begin to tell the story the character (when he was a student
in high school) get yelled at by his teacher for doing the assignment completely
wrong. You can hear the anger in the teacher voice and it evokes the emotion of you
doing something wrong. In the end you finally get to hear the voice of the actual
character who has now become a very successful individual even through all the hard
time he faced getting to that point. One of the most effective affordances of sound
that I made sure to include short clips of motivational song in order to help the
listener understand that even when you fail you have to use that as motivation

the authors listed and cited historical facts to support their claim that a Motley Crew

just inspired America Revolution but would later transport revolutionary ideas across
the Atlantic and influence revolts in England, France, Africa and Caribbeanislands.

governor of Jamaica, who wrote: Here was a refuge for revolutionaries and a site for
future insurrection, a place that might in a moment ... be laid in ashes. These
revolutionaries created a political shift in slave societies and set the stage for Haitian

claim by examining the work of Granville Sharp, Thomas Clarkson and the life of
Olaudah Equiano. Sharp, who opposed impressments in American Revolution,
published the horrors on the board of the slave ship Zong. Equiano told him that a
captain of the ship threw 132 slaves overboard to preserve supplies and later tried
to collect insurance money for the dead. Sharp also worked on founding a free state
of Sierra Leone in 1786, and served on the Committee for Effecting the Abolition of
Slave Trade. Clarkson collected evidence about slave trade through informants
(sailors and former slaves) in ports of Liverpool, Bristol and London. But the
connection of sailors to the abolitionist movement, the authors write, was best
articulated through the life of Olaudah Equiano. Enslaved in West Africa, he was a

Abstract
Solar distillation system proves to be a good and cost effective method for water
purification. The function of solar still is to produce fresh water based on
evaporation process, utilizing the solar radiation as the source of energy. Solar still is
a device which uses process of solar distillation. A 3 dimensional solar still is
modelled at 3 different glass cover inclinations and is brought into Ansys cfd where
temperature distribution in the solar still over a period of time due to direct solar
irradiation over a particular location is calculated.
Introduction Distillation is a process which is used to obtain fresh water from salty,
brackish or contaminated water. Without fresh water human life is not possible even
industries and agriculture also need fresh water. Earlier fresh water is easily
available from rivers, lakes and ponds in plenty. Now it s becoming scarce because of
industrialization. Growing population leads to assumption that by the year 2025 two
thirds of the population will lack sufficient fresh water. The areas with the water
shortages are the warm, arid countries in the northern Africa and southern Asia within
the latitudes 15 35ВєN. Sunlight is one of several forms of heat energy that can be
used to power the process of water purification. It is difficult to use solar thermal
energy in large scale plants because of low thermal efficiency and considerable land

Diary Of A Mad Black Woman Essay
Afrocentricity is based on the ideology that African Americans need to re assert a
sense of agency in order to achieve sanity. Agency refers to the capacity of
individuals to act independently and make their own choices. Afrocentricity looks
at the history of the agents and the people that they interact with rather than
economic status. This theory is about the black perspective of society opposed to
the white perspective that society has deemed the one and only way to view

Essay On Ellen Pence Domestic Violence
Approximately 12 million people in the United States are affected by domestic
violence. Research on domestic violence has increased noticeably over the past 20
years. While greatly improving public awareness and understanding of this serious
social problem, this research has also created much controversy and
misunderstandings. Findings of domestic violencevary widely from study to study.
Some studies suggest that women and men are equally likely to be victimized by
their partners, but others determine that women are more likely to be victimized.
Some studies conclude that minorities and whites undergo equal rates of domestic
violence, and others conclude that minorities suffer higher rates (Samuels Thacker,
n.d., p. 1). Little has been done to recognize Ellen Pence and her contributions to the
world of domestic violence. Ellen s persistent commitment and efforts generated an
entirely new narrative, which centers on the conclusion of victim blaming and
provides solid hope that we may one day resolve this ongoing, global issue.
Ellen Pence assisted in building the foundation of batterer programming with the
Duluth program. The program forged new ground and bridged the interests of
advocates and criminal justice officials in developing its Power and Control Wheel

As battered women s advocates worked in the 1980s to corrupt domestic violence, the
question became what to do with the male batterers who were being arrested. The
misdemeanor charges against most of them overcrowded the jails for the remainder,
which meant that batterers then ended up on open probation with little supervision.
Some women did not want their partners in jail, they just wanted them to stop the
abuse, and jailing proved in many cases to increase the hostility rather than improve
the men s behavior and attitude (Dasgupta, 2010, p.
Long-Term Effects On Children
Have you ever heard of the saying, There is always two sides to an argument ? Well
in this case, there are three. The third party involved in this altercation believes that
the bond between parents and children in based on what occurs in the time spent
interacting with one another and not so much being with their child every second of
the day. Time is precious in life; every minute counts. So the time parents do get with
their children needs to never be taken for granted. Long Term effects on children
throughout adulthood has been perceived as a major culmination of working parents.
However, some studies show none of these long term effects truly prevail. Dr Anne
McMunn, a researcher at the University College London, explains
The Demise Of Homer Barron
Gabriel, Bridges English, 1020 Professor Emery, Taylor 3 September 2014 The
Demise of Homer Barron In William Faulkner s short story, A Rose for Emily, Ms.
Emily Grierson, the title character in the story, is a very peculiar character.
Introverted from society, trapped in a world of misconceptions, Emily never
receives any psychiatric treatment, but she definitely exhibits symptoms of a
mental illness. By examining Emily s behavior and her social relationships, it is
possible to conclude that Emily was mentally unstable and possessed a personal
motivation to kill Homer Baron. Although her community of Jefferson Mississippi
never thought Emily was crazy, she was indeed a very ill person. After Emily
Grierson dies at the age of seventy four, the town people of Jefferson Mississippi
turn out in countless numbers for the funeral. The men show up to pay tribute to a
fallen monument, the narrator states, and the women mostly out of curiosity to see
the inside of her house (32). The only individual who had seen the interior over the
time period before her death was Homer Barron and her servant Tobe. Tobe s
character was an old black man who did the cooking, gardening, and marketing.
Tobe was originally the servant of Emily s father Mr. Grierson, and stayed with
Emily after his death, seemingly out of devotion and commitment. Emily was born
during the Civil War as an only child. Her father, Mr. Grierson raised her with Old
Southern values. He prevented young

the story captures the attention of the reader and if the setting is stated at the start of
the story, the readers could easily comprehend what the story is all about. In order

to realize that I have to set my goals in life that whenever there are hindrances that I
am experiencing, I have to be faithful and strong so that I could succeed in my

would like to say to us, it is our self who should be blame and no other people

The Effects Of Health On Health Care
Introduction
This topic is of interest because it is showing the relationship that health has on
economics. It has discussed widely on how health issues have affected the economy.
It is explaining the question of whether it s a positive or an adverse effect. We are
going to discuss generally on various aspects of health. They can be mental health
economics, behavioral health economic and other factors. This factors will be used to
explain on the whether saving on health care is affecting the economy and how it has
influenced its performance. Therefore the discussion will be broad concerning the
issues of health and economy (Slottje Tchernis, 2010).
Literature Review
From the research, we can discuss on several findings. These findings were that
the economy has been affected by health care because the government has to set
aside funds to cater for people s medical care. They are provided with facilities such
as clinics. The government also provides subsidized medical costs so that they can
afford. This is a positive move in the economy since the population will become
productive and active. When people are healthy, they are able to contribute to the
improvement of the economy. There were different methods used. When carrying
out research people were interviewed and were asked questions. They gave the
overview which enabled the researchers to derive the following conclusions. Health
care economics is a branch of economics

However, an interview with employees of the company suggests that they had lost
the meaning of working amidst the repetitive work flow in the assembly lines. This,
among other conditions led to a series of employee suicides that took place in the
vicinity of Foxconn, creating much controversy on management practices and work
flow processes.
Neo Taylorism
Scientific management practices can still be observed in companies everywhere,
from performance standards, to job descriptions and key performance indicators.
Neo Taylorism, as it is more commonly known today has evolved into a more
flexible framework with a balance of standardization and welfare for the employee.
Scientific management practices have been creeping into service sectors in the
form of automated replies and standard operation procedures. In McDonalds, job
fragmentation, specialization can be observed in the workplace and aims to
standardize and routinize products and work processes.
Conclusion
Taylorism is nothing more than a skeleton for a more sophisticated and an ever
growing framework of management. Although it led to the growing of the middle
class workers and has indirectly led to a comfortable life for most people, it is also
the foundation of capitalism and mass consumption, a problem that is ever growing.
Efficiency of workmen must be balanced with proper welfare and social interactions

The Food Waste And Recycling
Food Waste Recycling
There are billions of people struggling every day to have enough to eat, and billions
of tons of food being tossed in the garbage, food waste is gaining increasing
awareness as a serious environmental and economic issue. Research shows that about
60 million metric tons of food is wasted a year in the United States, with an estimated
value of $162 billion. About 32 million tons of it end up in landfills, at a cost of
about $1.5 billion a year to local government this economic crisis is worldwide! My
research estimates that a third of all the food produced in the world is never
consumed, and the total cost of that food waste could be as high as $400 billion a
year. The food discarded by retailers and consumers in the most developed
countries would be more than enough to feed all of the world s hungry people, but
it is not just those countries that have problems with food waste, it is also an issue
in African countries like South Africa. The problem is expected to grow worse as
the world s population increases, unless actions are taken to reduce the waste. Food
waste is not only a social cost, but it contributes to growing environmental problems
like global warming, experts say, with the production of food consuming vast
quantities of water, fertilizer and land. The fuel that is burned to process, refrigerate
and transport it also adds to the environmental cost. Most food waste is thrown away
in landfills, where it decomposes and emits methane, a potent
Single-Gender Classrooms Essay
It is no secret that, in general, boys and girls differ in their learning styles.
Capitalizing on these differences could advance classroom performance. With on
going concerns about student success in school, any changes in the classroom that
could increase student achievement should be considered. Recognizing the learning
differences between boys and girls, one of the changes that could be instituted is
single genderclassrooms.
Single gender classrooms would allow boys and girls to be instructed in a way that
is conducive to them. Literature choices could be offered to girls that are different
from the ones offered to the boys. Science experiments for the boys could be more

Review of the Literature When it comes to the classroom, there are several
differences between girls and boys. There are physical differences in the way their
brains work, differences in the room temperature that is best for boys and girls,
and differences in how girls and boys respond to various tones of speech (Sax,
2006). While girls prefer soft spoken teachers, Sax (2006) notes that boys prefer to
be spoken to loudly and in short, direct sentences with clear instructions (p. 195).
According to Sax (2006), the ideal ambient temperature for boys is about 69
degrees and about 75 degrees for girls (p. 193 194). Further differences involve
how boys and girls learn. McNeil states that boys may learn better under pressure
and when allowed to move around...while girls may perform better in group
situations and with a lot of encouragement (McNeil, 2008). Because of these many
differences, it would stand to reason that boys and girls would benefit from being
in separate classrooms. According to Hughes (2007), the teacher would be able to
concentrate on the learning styles of each sex and use the styles to bring out the
academic best in each students. Lessons and activities could be designed with a
single sex in mind (p. 11). As Principal John Fox states, the single sex environment
enables you to actually focus on the particular needs of each gender, and those needs
socially and
Comparing And Contrasting Websites
Our objective for this assignment was to visit the following websites:
amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com, and christianbook.com. We are to report on
the similarities, differences, and which site where we are most likely to purchase
and book and explain why. Similarities The three websites are all similar as far as
design layout. All three share an automatic rotating header screen that changes on
average every five seconds. A search box can be located at the top left. The option
to create an account or to log in is located at the top right. Menu shortcuts are listed
at the top and across the whole page. When scrolling you can find recommendations

At the bottom where you can find more information and the job listings, Amazon
does not have a contact us option. I have heard that it is available but it takes a
little more digging. I can only imagine this is to encourage the consumer to use
online contact as the preferred method. People do not have a strong appearance on
any of these unless they are people on a cover of a book. I spotted three people
when comparing the sites, Oprah, Obama and David Jeremiah. I have no idea who
David Jeremiah is other than he is christianbook.com s featured author. At the top
of two of the pages, there is a strip of black displaying what would appear to be
what they would like you to see first. Barnes and Noble have used green. I do not
know if that is for the holidays or the fact green is part of their branding. Green is
used on some of the fonts for Barnes and Noble as well. Amazon is the only page
that I noticed that didn t feature books on its landing page as well. While they
promoted products to read on they did not recommend any books. Where I Would
Purchase I must admit that I am predisposed to Amazon as I am an avid buyer and
take advantage of being a prime member. I was hoping to be influenced or at the very
least tempted into purchasing from another site. There was no
Internet Security Metrics
Security Metrics
As the Internet becomes ubiquitous due to wireless technologies including 3G and
pervasive Wi Fi Hotspots, there is the need to continually improve security
technologies. One of the most effective approaches to doing this is to define a series
of metrics for measuring security levels attained (Idika, Bhargava, 2012). The
following is a listing of security metrics and their definitions:
In the area of Incident Management the following metrics apply:
Mean Cost per Incident This the average cost per security incident from a dollars and
time perspective. The cost per incident is often measured in terms of opportunity cost
of how the time could have been invested in other tasks instead of solving the security
incident (Shari, 2009).
Mean Time Between Security Incidents This is the aggregated measurement of how
much time elapses between security incidents over a given time period. The mean
time between security incidents is often measured in monthly increments and charted
to compare the impact of security strategies over time (Wang, Guo, Wang, Zhou,
2012).
Number of Incidents a very fundamental measure of security that all security
platforms, even those available for free via vendors websites, report. This is the
baseline of many security programs and measurement platforms today. This figure is
often tracked over years to determine how well investment sin security pay off over
time as well.
In the area of Vulnerability Management the following are the
My Favorite Place In My Life
Quick and easy to use transportation has created the ability to travel worldwide
many times in your life. From airplanes to boats to cars to trains all the way to
buses, it is hard to not travel around the world, which it makes it difficult to choose
one spot as your all time favorite place to be. But luckily in my life, I know that
Sydney s Frozen Custardon the shores of Lake Superiorin Grand Marais is my
favorite place to be. I have been blessed with countless experiences of travel from
touring Italy, snorkeling the Mexican coasts, surfing the Dominican waves,
exploring the land of Ethiopia, and even inhaling the fresh air of the Netherlands,
but no adventure of mine has lived up to the relaxing Grand Marais atmosphere.
The tradition dates back to 2005, the first time I experienced the crisp Lake
Superior air. My family pained through the six hour drive, and found it was well
worth it. We fell in love with the small town ambiance, and to this day still cannot
let go if it. So many monumental family experiences can be traced back to Grand
Marais. Every year we celebrate America s birthday by watching the fireworks
explode over the placid and reflective Lake Superior water. Skiing the powdery
fresh hills of Lutsen Mountain and coming back to a warm and cozy room at East
Bay suites, while drinking the free steamy hot cocoa given away at the inn is a
memory that will never escape me. I love waking up to the fog rolling over the
water and the savory pastry aroma rolling
The Triple Bottom Line
no toxic substance while manufacturing the products.
b)People: people refers to human resource. Sustainable business ensures that fair
practices are practiced in the organization towards employees. This can be done by
providing fair wages to employees, providing job security, providing safe
environment to work etc.
c)Profit: every business main motto is to make profit. Company also should make
sure that profits are earned in compliance with people and planet. This would fetch
more profit for the company in long run.
Company is not only measured in the terms of profit but also measured
environmentally and socially. Triple bottom lineconcept is not just limited to
shareholders, it also gives importance to stakeholders or members of the organization.
Not only financial needs, triple bottom line concept also takes environmental and
social requirements into consideration. The old and traditional model just focuses
only on profit and benefits for the company but triple bottom line concept proves that
by just focusing on the profits company becomes unsustainable and gradually starts
losing its profits over the period of time. Therefore, triple bottom line concept justifies
that if the company aims at satisfying its customers and employees, it would
automatically fetch good profits for the company. ... Show more content on

Mindfulness Meditation On False Memory
The second stated long term meditators would show superior performance to short
term meditators . And the third stated concentrative meditators would be more
subject to expectancy effects...mindfulness meditators would show superior
performance relative to concentrative meditators when the stimulus was unexpected
(Valentine Sweet, 1999, p. 63). Using the Wilkins Counting Test (a measure of
sustained focused attention) the control group was placed in a classroom to perform
the test while the meditationgroups were tested post meditation sessions in a separate
room. The test was comprised of a series of tones which each group was asked to
count (the meditation groups were told there would be three rather than two sets).
The results confirmed the three hypotheses, overall concurring the use of meditation
leads to improved concentration with little difference between concentrative and
mindfulness meditation (Valentine Sweets, 1999). Through the importance of
meditation, holding strong positive results with attention, the working memory, and
concentration there was one more study brought up explaining the effects of
mindfulness meditation on false memory susceptibility. Wilson, Mickes, Stolarz
Fantino, Evrard Fantino (2014) conducted three experiments on the effect of
mindfulness meditation on false memory susceptibility predicting that participants in
the mindfulness condition would be especially likely to form false memories
(Wilson et al., 2014, p. 1567). The first

  • 2. The Training Of An Army Basic Training Failure Growing up the daughter of an Army Basic Training failure was an embarrassment for quite some time. My father went to Basic Training straight out of high school, came back shortly after leaving. He was discharged for injuries of his knees; he was weak. One would not assume a child of someone who failed Basic Training would be eager to go, however, I knew it was my time when I received a call from a recruiter asking me to come in. It was my chance to show my dad who I am without him, as well as fight for my country. I conquered Basic Training the summer in between the end of my junior, and the start of my senior year, at the age of seventeen. Even with the extra motivation, Basic Training was no easy task. There are four steps to Basic Training: two flights, reception, training, and graduation. May 31st, the day my family and I had been waiting for, ship day. I woke up at 3:30 a.m. to fly to Missouri. I left with two other people: Boone and Hiple. Boone was 18, he had graduated from high schooltwo weeks prior to shipping out for Basic Training. He would go straight through Basic and onto Advanced Individual Training (AIT); while both Hiple and I will go through Basic. Then next year, to continue our journey in the U.S. Army, the two of us, accompanied by others, will leave for AIT. That morning a recruiter dropped us off at the airport, our families came back with us through security and waited with us for our flight. I was of course stopped through security,

The police were investigating an unrelated incident involving former NBA player Chris Copeland, who was stabbed outside the nightclub in a separate incident. What happened next is still mired in mystery and controversy. According to reports, the club was shut down due to the stabbing of Copeland a few blocks away. As Sefolosha and Antic made their way to the exits, the police were aggressively pushing club goers and demanding that they walk in a particular direction. As Sefolosha and Antic made their way outside to wait for a car service, that s when the incident took place. An officer allegedly harassed the Hawks players, demanding ... My ankle is still bothering me, it s just something that I will have to live with for the remainder of my playing years and beyond. I m going to deal with this for the rest of my life. Police brutality has been a much discussed topic in this country, but the problem still persists. What do you think about this issue that has plagued the nation? It s terrible, you know. It s a thin line because it s a dangerous country. They have a hard job but the part for me that is more troubling is that it s very little repercussions. Even when you can prove and see that they acted out of anger, they just act that way because they have a badge. If you let them get away with a slap on the wrist they re going to keep doing it. It s troubling to me. The 2016 Presidential election was one of the most controversial elections in history because of the controversy that surrounded Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. According to Lord Scarman, appointed to chair the public inquiry into this riot, he calls them an out bust of anger and resentment by young black people against the police (Calvin, 2016). It is an axiom of the liberal culture in policing that the police use of force should be essential (Mohan, 2015; Widdup Davenport, 2009). In 1991 according to Institute of Race Relations Paper, there were 16 cases of blacks highly reported between 1969 to 1991 in custody (Bowling Phillips, 2003). The maximum force was used to blacks than others causing these numbers to increase, recently in the UK, the number of people who have died in custody has increased by 32% in the previous year, to add on that the majority of those who die to consist of blacks and ethnic minorities (Hannan et al., 1998). • 9. Comparing Dante Alighieri s Inferno And The Faerie Queene Both Dante Alighieri s Inferno and Edmund Spenser s The Faerie Queene depict wooded forests wrought with transformed men as trees. In the Inferno and The Faerie Queene an existential conundrum of compromised identities leaves Pier della Vigne and Fraudubio sans human choice. Dehumanized and disfigured, the individuals that comprise the trees still retain human qualities like talking, breathing, and, even, bleeding under certain circumstances. Within each space, whether it is considered a definite locus amoenus or a locus horribilis, the most significant human attribute to which these trees cling is bleeding and thus they have a small handful of feelings and emotions still within each of them. Instead of their ripped branches symbolizing death and decay, the breaking of the branches within Inferno13 and The Faerie Queene1.2, give the trees life as if nothing has changed. While the bleeding infers a loss of identity in both, redeemable only for one of the two, it also lets their stories be told. Their stories, sad in nature, have redemptive qualities and move the two pilgrims that listen to their doleful tales. The Inferno illustrates the journey of Dante the pilgrim as he travels through the nine circles of Hell wherein each circle objectifies a specific sin like lust, gluttony, greed or violence; there the sinners endure eternal punishment. In the seventh circle, the circle of violence, Dante interacts with the suicides and profligates. Condemned to live eternally as

Benefits for the unemployed were not discarded but were only to last for 30 weeks. Marriage and training grants for the self employed were discarded, and most importantly, the scale of the payments received from the contributory scheme fell below the minimum needed for continuation. This resulted in the need for national assistance being means tested, this over the years grew more and more important, which was not what Beveridge had intended. Now, the benefits for the unemployed, more commonly known as Job Seekers Allowance are calculated annually as to what a person can claim in a week. On June 29, 2009 the maximum payable was ВЈ65.45 per week for a person aged over 25, ВЈ53.45 per week for a person aged 18 24. The rules for couples where both are unemployed are more complex, but a maximum of ВЈ102.75 per week is payable, dependent on age and other factors. (Benefit Tax Credit Rates 2006). The system now is a lot more complex and intricate and although a lot of people rely on the benefit system for survival, poverty is still an enormous issue as it was in the 1940 s. Other acts which were put in place to tackle want/poverty include the Family Allowances Act and the National Assistance Act So how did the Labour Government tackle the other four giants? There were policy initiatives put in place relating to each giant individually. For

Insulation is made of bats of fiber glass that are least 3.5. It is put in between the wall cavities to ensure the control of the heat. Since standardized was used, precut insulation can be used. This will mean less measuring and cutting will occur, ensuring less mistakes and faster building. At an individual level, it is often witnessed within families and at places of work. At a group level, appeasement of communities, sects, counties, countries, etc. is an omnipresent reality of today s world. While most such acts are targeted at calming down a seemingly volatile situation, the majority of them do not aim to benefit all the parties involved i.e. the appeased party, the appeasing party or the appeaser and the third parties affected by the agreement between the former two but not directly involved themselves. The end result of a carefully orchestrated appeasement with a positive intent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... is a much debated issue across the globe. In our own country, the continuous appeasement of minorities or backward communities for vote bank politics has gradually established itself as a deep rooted cancer in our society. Every couple of years, a backward group rises above the rest of the groups and holds the country for ransom to gain reservations in educational institutes and government jobs. There are widespread killings, looting and arson until the central government bends to the unjust demands of the protesting community and surrenders. Unfortunately, this becomes a vicious cycle and emboldens other people with a common grouse to demand reservations, statehood, favours, etc. The appeaser i.e. the government remains a spectator for most of the period but eventually ends up on the losing side whereas the appeased party i.e. the protesting group usually ends up on the winning side. However, the biggest losers are the rest of the people (third party) who have nothing to do with the issue. Badly hit road and train travel, exorbitantly costly air travel, electricity / water crisis, postponement of exams / interviews, collateral damage in terms of killings and loss of income, etc. are few of the problems that people face due to the standoff between the government and the protesters. Appeasement in such cases creates unsettling, volatile calm cycles of unrest and peace. It

Your child s soul is sucked out of her body by a stranger your child has never met before. Imagine your child making world news and being put in history books because of the evil negligence of another fellow American. This reality was true for the families of the victims in the Ballad of Birmingham poem. In my opinion, this is a well structured essay by Dudley Randall which describes minutes before an innocent girl dies in one of the most unimaginable ways. Secondly, I disagree with the way Dudley Randall ended the poem. Even though the reader can assume what happened to the child, the poem slightly leaves you with a cliffhanger. The child s lifeless body cannot be found by her desperate and destitute mother. The audience can be left feeling melancholy and incomplete. Lastly, Randall, in my opinion, strategically wrote stanza five in the poem very well, She has combed and brushed her night dark hair, And bathed rose petal sweet, And drawn white gloves on her small brown hands, And white shoes on her feet (Randall 19). Lastly, the white gloves and white shoes represent purity and innocence of the adolescent. These incidents of harassment of the homosexual community and social discrimination in India remain widespread despite years of campaigning by sexually rights groups in the country. The biggest hurdle faced by the campaign to fight discrimination based on sexual orientation in India is section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, which criminalizes unnatural sex. This additive noise typically arises from thermal noise generated by random motion of electrons in the conductors comprising the receiver. In a communication system the thermal noise having the greatest effect on system performance is generated at and before the first stage of amplification. This point in a communication system is where the desired signal takes the lowest power level and consequently the thermal noise has the greatest impact on the performance. It turns out that W(t) is accurately characterized as a stationary, Gaussian, and white random process. Consequently, our first task is to define a random process (Section 9.1). The exposition of the characteristics of a Gaussian random process (Section 9.2) and a stationary Gaussian random process (Section 9.3) then will follow. A brief discussion of the characteristics of thermal noise is then followed by an analysis of stationary random processes From this point forward in the text the experimental outcome index will be dropped and random processes will be represented as N(t). In society as a whole concealing an STD creates a false sense of security and attempts to preserve a faulty self image. Along with merely keeping an STD a secret many are too embarrassed to even get tested after unprotected sex with a mentality that what they do not know will not hurt them. Intro Floating exchange rates and fixed exchange rates each provide distinct advantages and disadvantages for a given regime. In any given state of the global economy, one given country may be better suited for one system. But there are a number of factors that influence this, and there is therefore no universal correct system for all international economies. I will discuss the merits and demerits of a floating exchange rate, providing the examples of the US Government response to the 2008 financial crisis and the excessive speculation that led to the 1929 stock market crash. These examples will illustrate a time when the US economy benefitted due to a floating exchange rate and a time when the US economy suffered due to a floating exchange rate. I will then provide a similar analysis for the fixed exchange rate using the same example of the dangers of speculation regarding the 1929 financial crash and the emerging market crisis of Argentina in 2001. As mentioned before, there is no universal solution to the monetary policy governing exchange rates. A general rule, however, is that floating exchange rates provide a country with more adaptability and independence in fluctuating international economic circumstances. But they can lead to instability, needlessly expansionary policy and excessive speculation. Fixed exchange rates, in contrast, are

Reflection On Group Reflection Group Reflection Renae Van Der Linden Roberts Wesleyan College Group Reflection When leading a group, it is important to understand what the overall goal should be, as well as understanding what the group expectations are. Knowing what the group goals and expectations are provides a basic outline of what the group dynamic should be. Additionally, the goals and group expectations should be discussed with the group members, providing the opportunity to share their input and possibly even make changes to what the facilitator believes the group goal(s) or expectations should be. The goal for the psychoeducational group based on mindfulness was to: define mindfulness, share various mindfulness skills, discuss the applicability of mindfulness, and practice a few of the mindfulness skills. Aside from these goals, which were created for the specific group session that was led in class, there are also goals of psychoeducation as a whole. The purpose of psychoeducation is to share information with group members about a particular topic. Related to that topic, skills should be built upon. Psychoeducation not only provides group members to share their personal experiences related to the group s topic, but also to teach the group members how to create their own support system outside of the group (Corey, 2016). Overall, I felt as though the goals of the group on mindfulness were accomplished, as well as the goals of psychoeducation as a whole. Whitney and I were able to share information on mindfulness with the class, which included the definition, skills, applicability, and examples of mindfulness, encompassing the goal for the particular session that was led. Furthermore, I felt as though the group members were able to share their personal experiences related to mindfulness and were even able to create their own techniques and skills that can be implemented to reach the desired goal of mindfulness in their personal lives. Even though a few group members openly shared what they like to do to stay mindful, one way to engage the group a little more would have been to go around and ask members to share, if they felt comfortable, what they like to do to attain mindfulness. In simple terms, an electoral system is a key component in making a government. Prime Ministers are only successful under the MMP system if they have the required qualities that are needed. This essay will talk about one such Prime Minister namely Helen Clark. Further, it will provide an insight to the MMP electoral system as opposed to the First Past the Post (FPP) electoral system. The essay will then differentiate between the required leadership qualities under MMP and FPP electoral systems. The essay will also shower some light on Helen Clark s leadership under the MMP electoral system. It will then conclude by determining whether Helen Clark was successful under MMP or not and whether she possessed the required qualities of successful prime ministerial leadership under MMP system. To start with, Mixed Member Proportional electoral system was chosen by the legal voters of New Zealand in a binding referendum that was initially started in 1992, where it obtained an astonishing 85% support. • 34. What Is The Theme Of The Golden Lily By Gold Sartin The devious plot line jumped back and forth in time as to portray the tumultuous era of Malaysia s independence after World War Two. In the novel, different factions vied for control of this newly independent country including communist insurgents, British settlers, Malaysian and the Chinese ethnicities. The communists wanted to establish a communist regime while the Chinese folks wanted to preserve their economic gains. The power struggle happens under the eyes of two former imperialist occupying forces: the Japanese and British. This plot has another added layer: imperial Japan planned to strip and loot the former colonies of their precious resources and wealth, a plan called Golden Lily. Was he really stripped from his position as the Emperor s private gardener or was he given a special mission to ensure the success of the mysterious Golden Lily s plan? The question is left up to the readers to decide. In the novel the author only provides the facts through different characters action such as Tatsuji s research on the Golden Lily plan. Was the tattoo on Yun Ling a map of the concentration s camp? Metaphorically it may also represent the mark of the past and the tumultuous Japanese occupation. Is his disappearance a sign of revolt in the face of Japanese atrocities or an attempt to destroy the traces of Japanese atrocities perpetuated in the name of the emperor? Like a boulder, the reader can only see the visible surface of his personality. Yun Ling mentions: he turned to me, touching the side of his head lightly. At that moment it struck me that he was similar to the boulders on which we had spent the entire morning working. Only a small portion was revealed to the world; the rest was buried deep within, hidden from view. He is the picture of an ideal spy: he is one of the main characters in the novel but we don t see his true personality; he remains a shadow like those in Plato s cave. Is it a sign of denying the visible collective guilt? This novel may be the antithesis of Ruth Ozeki s work A Tale for the Time Being when Ozeki tries to explain or show the Japan s reason to attack America

A Motley Crew in American Revolution 1 Essay A Motley Crew in the American Revolution Vectors of Revolution In the chapter A Motley Crew in the American Revolution authors Peter Linebaugh and Marcus Rediker imply that sailor, slave and labor revolts set the stage for the American Revolution. Throughout this chapter of the book The Many Headed Hydra the authors listed and cited historical facts to support their claim that a Motley Crew (multiethnic, multiracial and organized group of people with a common goal) not just inspired America Revolution but would later transport revolutionary ideas across the Atlantic and influence revolts in England, France, Africa and Caribbeanislands. The authors cited Lord Balcarres, governor of Jamaica, who wrote: Here was a refuge for revolutionaries and a site for future insurrection, a place that might in a moment ... be laid in ashes. These revolutionaries created a political shift in slave societies and set the stage for Haitian Revolution. Linebaugh and Rediker write that a third vector of revolution went east toward abolitionist movement in England. The authors convincingly supported their claim by examining the work of Granville Sharp, Thomas Clarkson and the life of Olaudah Equiano. Sharp, who opposed impressments in American Revolution, published the horrors on the board of the slave ship Zong. Equiano told him that a captain of the ship threw 132 slaves overboard to preserve supplies and later tried to collect insurance money for the dead. Sharp also worked on founding a free state of Sierra Leone in 1786, and served on the Committee for Effecting the Abolition of Slave Trade. Clarkson collected evidence about slave trade through informants (sailors and former slaves) in ports of Liverpool, Bristol and London. But the connection of sailors to the abolitionist movement, the authors write, was best articulated through the life of Olaudah Equiano. Simulation Of Double Slope Solar Essay SIMULATION OF DOUBLE SLOPE SOLAR STILL AT DIFFFERENT INCLINATIONS USING CFD Abstract Solar distillation system proves to be a good and cost effective method for water purification. The function of solar still is to produce fresh water based on evaporation process, utilizing the solar radiation as the source of energy. Solar still is a device which uses process of solar distillation. A 3 dimensional solar still is modelled at 3 different glass cover inclinations and is brought into Ansys cfd where temperature distribution in the solar still over a period of time due to direct solar irradiation over a particular location is calculated. Introduction Distillation is a process which is used to obtain fresh water from salty, brackish or contaminated water. Without fresh water human life is not possible even industries and agriculture also need fresh water. Earlier fresh water is easily available from rivers, lakes and ponds in plenty. Now it s becoming scarce because of industrialization. Growing population leads to assumption that by the year 2025 two thirds of the population will lack sufficient fresh water. The areas with the water shortages are the warm, arid countries in the northern Africa and southern Asia within the latitudes 15 35ВєN. Sunlight is one of several forms of heat energy that can be used to power the process of water purification. It is difficult to use solar thermal energy in large scale plants because of low thermal efficiency and considerable land area

  • 39. Diary Of A Mad Black Woman Essay Afrocentricity is based on the ideology that African Americans need to re assert a sense of agency in order to achieve sanity. Agency refers to the capacity of individuals to act independently and make their own choices. Afrocentricity looks at the history of the agents and the people that they interact with rather than economic status. This theory is about the black perspective of society opposed to the white perspective that society has deemed the one and only way to view things. The afrocentric theory had five characteristics: a phenom must be studied and analyzed in a relationship in to psychological time and space. Research on domestic violence has increased noticeably over the past 20 years. While greatly improving public awareness and understanding of this serious social problem, this research has also created much controversy and misunderstandings. Findings of domestic violencevary widely from study to study. Some studies suggest that women and men are equally likely to be victimized by their partners, but others determine that women are more likely to be victimized. Some studies conclude that minorities and whites undergo equal rates of domestic violence, and others conclude that minorities suffer higher rates (Samuels Thacker, n.d., p. 1). Little has been done to recognize Ellen Pence and her contributions to the world of domestic violence. Ellen s persistent commitment and efforts generated an entirely new narrative, which centers on the conclusion of victim blaming and provides solid hope that we may one day resolve this ongoing, global issue. About 32 million tons of it end up in landfills, at a cost of about $1.5 billion a year to local government this economic crisis is worldwide! My research estimates that a third of all the food produced in the world is never consumed, and the total cost of that food waste could be as high as $400 billion a year. The food discarded by retailers and consumers in the most developed countries would be more than enough to feed all of the world s hungry people, but it is not just those countries that have problems with food waste, it is also an issue in African countries like South Africa. Food waste is not only a social cost, but it contributes to growing environmental problems like global warming, experts say, with the production of food consuming vast quantities of water, fertilizer and land. The fuel that is burned to process, refrigerate and transport it also adds to the environmental cost. Most food waste is thrown away in landfills, where it decomposes and emits methane, a potent

Review of the Literature When it comes to the classroom, there are several differences between girls and boys. There are physical differences in the way their brains work, differences in the room temperature that is best for boys and girls, and differences in how girls and boys respond to various tones of speech (Sax, 2006). While girls prefer soft spoken teachers, Sax (2006) notes that boys prefer to be spoken to loudly and in short, direct sentences with clear instructions (p. 195). According to Sax (2006), the ideal ambient temperature for boys is about 69 degrees and about 75 degrees for girls (p. 193 194). Further differences involve how boys and girls learn. McNeil states that boys may learn better under pressure and when allowed to move around...while girls may perform better in group situations and with a lot of encouragement (McNeil, 2008). Because of these many differences, it would stand to reason that boys and girls would benefit from being in separate classrooms. Using the Wilkins Counting Test (a measure of sustained focused attention) the control group was placed in a classroom to perform the test while the meditationgroups were tested post meditation sessions in a separate room. The test was comprised of a series of tones which each group was asked to count (the meditation groups were told there would be three rather than two sets). The results confirmed the three hypotheses, overall concurring the use of meditation leads to improved concentration with little difference between concentrative and mindfulness meditation (Valentine Sweets, 1999). Through the importance of meditation, holding strong positive results with attention, the working memory, and concentration there was one more study brought up explaining the effects of mindfulness meditation on false memory susceptibility. Wilson, Mickes, Stolarz Fantino, Evrard Fantino (2014) conducted three experiments on the effect of mindfulness meditation on false memory susceptibility predicting that participants in the mindfulness condition would be especially likely to form false memories (Wilson et al., 2014, p. 1567).
