1. The Case of Abdul
Suresh: Project Team Leader at Damdocs Infotech
Abdul: Team member
Abdul has just entered in Suresh’s Cabin. He has come to discuss with Suresh about his problem
concerning next week’s project schedule. Just then, Suresh receives a call on his mobile. He has
an angry exchange with the caller, slams down the receiver, and storms out of the cabin,
muttering to Abdul, “wait here”.
“What bad luck to have to bring this up, now” Abdul says to himself. “He’s in a lousy mood.”
When Suresh returns, it’s clear that he is still angry. He throws his mobile on his desk and does
not look at Abdul, but asks in a loud tone, “What do you want?”
As Suresh browse through the monitor screen, Abdul says, “A couple of weeks ago, I had asked
for next Saturday off for a family wedding. Sir, as I was just going through the next week’s
project schedule, I came across that I’m scheduled to work on next Saturday on the project
assignment.”
Suresh takes his focus off from the monitor and glares at Abdul, and say angrily, “you said, you
needed the third Saturday off, and I approved an off for you. The third Saturday of the month is
on the 20th
”.
“I had meant the third Saturday from when we were talking. I need Saturday the 13th
off for the
family wedding,” says Abdul. “This is terrible. Can we do something about it?”
Suresh leans back on his chair, covers his eyes with his hands, and moves his palms over his
head right to the back of his neck and replies sarcastically, in a soft voice, “No problem, Abdul.
I’ll be happy to rearrange the schedule to suit your family’s needs.”
