Identifying peatland
Need to identify peat extent, topographic and peat
thickness.
Peat Survey Methods
• Terrestrial survey, direct measurement in the
field use optical survey equipment to determine
topographic and drilling to identify peat
thickness
• Remote sensing survey use Radar or LiDAR to get
topographic information
• Combine between Remote sensing and field
survey to get more efficient methods.
8. LiDAR data collection and interpretation
APP Sinar Mas | Seoul, May 4 2022

§ More than 11,000 km flown over East
Sumatera and West Kalimantan - 2015
§ End product of LiDAR data collection is
topographic maps
§ Most of all peat extent in east Sumatera are
mapped (over 4.5 million Hectare)

10. Peatland Management - Ground Water Table Maintenance
APP Sinar Mas | Seoul, May 4 2022
11
• In order to manage water table in
peatland area, it is important to define
water zonation based on topographic
data.
• Every zone has different water table
value.
• To maintain water level of in production
zone, every differences of 50 cm need to
separate into different water zone

11. Peatland Management in Landscape Approach
APP Sinar Mas | Seoul, May 4 2022

The key success on peatland
management, is need to manage it in
the landscape level and collaborate
with multi-stakeholders.

14. Water Management in Landscape Approach – CASE STUDY
APP Sinar Mas | Seoul, May 4 2022
15
• PT. Bukit Batu Hutani Alam (BBHA) developed
water management zoning based on LIDAR result.
The result also determine the development
location of canal blocking.
• The Tanjung Leban village is part of GSK-BB
landscape. The village located in transitions area
of Giam Siak Kecil-Bukit Batu Biosphere Reserve
(GSK-BB BR).
• The Tanjung Leban village has significant role to
protect core and buffer zone of GSK-BB BR.

16. Water Management in Landscape Approach - Tanjung Leban village
APP Sinar Mas | Seoul, May 4 2022
17
• Tanjung Leban village has history of forest fire.
• The village has important role in maintaining water level GSK BB BR and its landscape.
• BBHA is a part of collaboration effort with local government, Tanjung Leban community, BRG,
JICA, and Kyoto University.
• BBHA provided integrated water management design, zoning plan, canal blocking design, and
water-gate design in GSK landscape.
• The community taking active participation on water level monitoring and fire patrol.
• Tanjung Leban village is one of beneficiaries of APP’s IFFS program.
• In 2019, with little rainfall Tanjung Leban village success to manage zero fire incidents

20. Benefit & Conclusion
APP Sinar Mas | Seoul, May 4 2022
21
Benefit For Company:
1. Decreasing risk of fire from outside concession
2. Gaining a better relationship with the surrounding villages due to an increase in community understanding about water sharing
Benefit For Village:
1. Having knowledge about water management in the area
2. Having skills in overcoming the problem of excess or lack of water in the land
3. Optimizing the area for productive activities according to the characteristics of the land
Conclusion:
1. Peatland management should be managed in landscape approach
2. Need multi stakeholder collaboration in the landscape (sharing information, sharing knowledge and good coordination).
3. The improvement of capacity building is required in village level to handle peatland and water management
