John Newton, founder and CTO of Alfresco, describes how Amazon Aurora enables the Alfresco Content Management System to store, manage, and retrieve billions of documents and related information with fast and linear scalability. Using new techniques of information modeling, indexing, and processing with the recently launched Aurora database, Alfresco can support cloud-based workloads previously not possible for high-throughput insurance, banking, and case-based applications. This session addresses the challenges of scaling document repositories to this level; architectural approaches for coordinating data; search and storage technologies such as Aurora, Solr, Amazon EBS, and Amazon S3; the breadth of use cases that modern content systems need to support; and how to support user applications that require subsecond response times. The result is a solution that once would have required large data centers to support but can now be handled cost-effectively with AWS and Aurora.

The recent launch of the Docker Init command has significantly simplified the process of generating Dockerfiles and Docker Compose templates for containerized applications. This presentation aims to explore the evolution of Docker deployment resources generation process, comparing its approach prior to the Docker Init command release and discussing the way forward. Before the introduction of the Docker Init command, I've been delivering some projects like the "alfresco-docker-installer"[1], which provides custom scripts and configurations to streamline the process of deploying Alfresco in Docker containers. These kinds of projects use tools like Yeoman or raw Python. There are some differences between a Docker Template for a technology (Go, Python, Node or Rust) and a Docker Template for a product (like Alfresco) that may be covered when generating automatic deployment resources. This presentation will delve into the methodologies employed before the Docker Init command: Custom Dockerfile Extension Compose Template for a complete product deployment, including a set of services like the database, content repository, search engine, or web application Configuration Management, including techniques such as environment variable injection, externalized configuration files, and configuration overrides Following the release of the Docker Init command, this presentation will provide insights into the possibilities and advantages it brings to complex products Docker deployment process. A PoC of a Docker Plugin, including this product-oriented approach for docker init, will be demoed live. >> Note that the Open Source Alfresco product is used only to explain the concepts of building a Docker Compose generator with a real example.

This is a classic migration case study (the past, current and the future) at scale from a world-wide company transitioning from Confluent Platform and Confluent Cloud to self-managed Apache Kafka on Kubernetes using Strimzi. At Maersk, we have been architecting, designing and implementing our 3rd generation Event Streaming Platform. This platform is based on Kubernetes in Azure and using Strimzi to operate Apache Kafka at large scale, highly reliable, segregating data based on isolated use cases. Our 2nd generation was based on OnPrem Confluent Platform and Confluent Cloud and this presentation is the story of this migration and reasoning behind it. Furthermore, we would get into details on how we monitor (Grafana, Prometheus), alert (GoAlert and alert as code), operate and provide self-service solutions on top of Strimzi to enable business critical application in Maersk, implemented in GoLang using the GitOps deployment model with Flux and Kustomization among others. Finally, if time allows we will end with a demo of an open-source self service tool to monitor and explore the cluster with most wanted features such as topic message browsing and configuring and restarting connectors.

This trend necessitates techniques that utilize chip area to optimize power efficiency through specialized accelerators. The presentation will outline key concepts that led to the dark silicon such as Moore’s law and breakdown of Dennard scaling, followed by an overview of current and upcoming CPU accelerators. The focus will then shift to vector units and the specifics of vector programming. Attendees will be introduced to registers, a range of vector operations, and methods to develop branchless algorithms such as sorting networks. The session will conclude with an overview of the new Java Vector API and how it was already picked up by projects to do AI inference (Llama 2) and vector search (AstraDB and Cassandra).

In his book, The Nature of the Physical World, Sir Arthur Eddington commented that “We have to appeal to the one outstanding law — the second law of thermodynamics — to put some sense into the world.” This sense-making goes beyond the physical world, too. Entropy is also essential in the fields of information and communication theory. During this lecture for the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, lecturer Andrea Goulet discussed the application of entropy-related concepts in two communication systems: software and collaborative teams. She examined how concepts that help us understand systemic statistical disorder, such as ergodic systems, Lyapunov exponents, Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy, and Shannon-entropy can help us optimize for both software quality and innovation. She also provided several domain-specific models: Lehman’s Laws and Conway’s Law for software, as well as new models from her own research that relate to entropy and innovation. Entropy helps us understand the world and achieve great things. There is an underlying beauty in its principles that we can use to advance scientific discovery. When we understand the subtleties related to balancing surprise and structure, we increase our chances for effective collaboration and finding novel solutions to complex problems.
