Prosser (1998) enters the gender identity conversation with a rather counter intuitive project. At a
time when poststructuralism is busily deconstructing the sex/gender linkage in ways that transcend
the materiality of the subject, Prosser wants to bring the ontological trans body back into the
dialogue by charting the arc of the changing body within transgender narratives. Only by mapping
these transitions in this frame can he describe a complex transsexual experience that breaks free
from the political binaries used by essentialists and poststructuralists, such as literal/deliteralizing,
subversive/hegemonic (16). If the former has been guilty of a dogmatic reliance on a narrow

The amount of available fresh water is very limited in Benin, Africa. Much of this is a result of
under urbanization, at one end of the spectrum, and poor government and infrastructure, at the

produces about 77 pounds of excrement and 132 gallons of urine a year (George 2008). This is
waste that is typically flushed down a toilet and into a sewer system. However, this is not the case
in many of these communities. Many homes in this part of the world do not have the luxury of
indoor plumbing or even a indoor toilet. These people must utilize fields for their means of
eliminating human waste. It is astounding to think of the infinite uses of water, and the need that
some countries have for it.

In the latter part of the 19th century, psychology began to separate from its previous philosophical
standing, emerging more as a scientific discipline. Abstract laws were devised, and objective and
quantitative measurements of isolated variables analysed. Theories of development emerged and

described in the novel The Fountainhead, history has shown to repeat itself by punishing the
inventors of new objects that go against societal normalities. This is evident with Equality 7 2521,
the protagonist in Ayn Rands book Anthem. Set in a future free of technology, Anthem depicts a
man s struggle to free himself from collectivism. In the novel, society has put strict rules in place to
ensure members are controlled and free from independent thought. Equality acknowledges these
rules throughout the book yet still breaks them to pursue his passion for learning and inventing.
Equality s decision to put his own interests before society s ultimately leads to his liberation. During
the book, Equality internally struggles between doing what is morally right for society and
following what he wants. In the city, rules and expectations are put in place to eliminate

Altruism, the doctrine which demands that man live for others and place others above oneself
