To Helen And Doolittle s To Helen
In ancient times, Helen of Troy was known far and wide for her astounding beauty. She was the
wife of Menelaus, a Greek king. She abandoned her husband for a young Trojan prince named
Paris. Menelaus enraged by his wife s betrayal, began preparations for what is known as the Trojan
War. Now in modern times many writers use this legend as poetic inspiration, but certainly view
Helenin different ways. These diverse viewpoints of Helen are made known by the different tones
between Edgar Allen Poe s poem To Helen and Hilda Doolittle s poem Helen. In To Helen Poe s
speaker has a very adoring view of Helen, while in Helen Doolittle s speaker tells of the fostered
hatred Greece has for her. The difference in these views is illustrated in... Show more content on

In To Helen, she is portrayed as an iconic, goddess like beauty, while in Helen, she is viewed as
the bane of Greece and is described as frail and detested by others. What is noticed in the poem
Helen, is the increasing abhorrence towards her. Throughout the poem each stanza has a line
added on to it, symbolizing the increasingly negative feelings toward Helen. This change is
implemented into the poem because of how the people of Greece reminisce on past
enchantments and past ills. They begin to remember how much they praised Helen for her
beauty, and then how much her act of betrayal changed their lives for the worse. To further
demonstrate her feelings of hate towards Helen she states, [Greece] could love indeed the maid,
only if she were laid, white ash amid funereal cypresses. Using diction such as white ash and
funereal cypresses which implies Helen is cremated and a funeral is being held for her. These
words signify that the Greek s hate could not be satisfied with anything other than Helen s death.
In To Helen, the speaker describes her Lo! in yon brilliant window. How statue like I see thee
stand. even idolizing her posture. Another way the speaker views her as a beautiful goddess is his
comparison between their relationship and Psyche, from the regions which are Holy Land! The
speaker is comparing his relationship to the love between the immortal Cupid and mortal

Greek Mythology And Its Impact On Modern Society
Greek mythology has been passed down over many generations and has led to many great tales of
heroes and gods. One of these heroes was Odysseus. Although Odysseus is best known as a
warrior in the Trojan War, he is also known for leaving an impact on modern society and
committing acts of heroism.
Odysseus lived an exciting life full of adventure and hardship. Odysseus was the son of King
Laertes and Anticlea. While being educated by the centaur Chiron Odysseus showed many
characteristics of greatness including great strength and courage (Odysseus). One time he showed
this was during a hunting trip with his father and uncle during which he killed a wild boar thus
saving the adults he was with. When Odysseus was of age he was passed down the rule of Ithica,
also around this time he began to think of marriage. Like many other men of Greek mythology he
desired the hand of Helen, the beautiful daughter of King Tyndareus of Sparta (Odysseus). Even
though this was unlikely to happen due to the poorness of Ithica, Odysseus tried none the less.
When Odysseus went to Sparta as a suitor he displayed his cunning personality, for this he
quickly became famous. The King took notice of this and and accepted advice from him
concerning how he can be sure of Helen s safety. Odysseus advised Tyndareus to make all the
suitors swear an oath to protect Helen and the man she married (Odysseus). They all agreed and a
man named Menelaus became the husband of Helen. To show gratitude King

Victor Frankenstein Character Analysis
Robert Walton is amazed and in awe, while he is traveling to the north pole. His traveling gives
him dreams and excitement for what will come during his travels. Robert is also convincing
himself that the cold and frost of the north will have many adventures for him. I wonder how much
this breeze means to Robert Walton and how he would feel if there was no breeze. I wonder if he
will be unmotivated or unable to continue on. I am also imagining his descriptions and thinking
whether or not my visions match with his visions and descriptions.
Victor Frankenstein is happy about the summer months and the scenery around him. He is happy
about the harvest from the farms and just happy about nature in general. I wonder how harvest
would look like and why he specifically mentions vines. However, at the same time, those
feelings made him forget about his friends and his loved ones, who are far away. Victor broke his
promise with his father and has worried his friends. I wonder what would happen if Victor just
suddenly appeared to loved ones and friends. I also wonder if his loved ones and friends would be
surprised and be happy or be disappointed for not hearing from him.
Victor was watching as his monster stood and came alive, while their was a storm in the sky. I
wonder why Victor called the storm a noble war that was so, beautiful yet terrific. Is it beautiful
because of the clouds and terrific because of the winds and lightning? Victor also watched as a bolt

Using Synthetic Phonics For Improving Reading Essay
Using Synthetic Phonics for Improving Reading
Synopsis
For this assignment, I will first briefly discuss the value of early reading pre school and the stages
of reading. After that I will critically evaluate the history of introducing synthetic phonics reading in
primary schools in England. Furthermore, I will investigate the developments and issues which
have been brought about the different teaching strategies used in schools and using teaching
synthetic phonics in early years to teach first reading.
Introduction
Learning to read is a valuable and important skill that children acquire from a very early age.
Children gain an understanding of the different sounds in our spoken language from a wide range
of different experiences and social interaction with their environment. For example, singing and
saying rhymes, sharing books, making and listening to music, pretend play, listening to adults and
joining in conversations etc ect. as mentioned by Vygotsky (1978)
Children s learning begins long before they attend school.
And also by Goouch, K., Lambirth, A. (2010). States that

The bulk of the trade is still controlled very well by one party. Consolidation abbreviated
Although many companies have flirted with the idea of consolidation, few major companies of
top 7 10 performers have made any meaningful headway towards consolidation via mergers.
Maritime culture is heavily steeped in neoclassical model of economics, and the utilitarian ultra
capitalist teachings of Ayn Rand and Milton Friedman. Basically it has become a null point for
powerful companies to work towards consolidation since they have natural business advantages
already fixed in place. APM Maersk When interpreting the figures it is key to remember that the
top carrier of goods is APM Maersk, holding 15 16% of the market. Lack of regulation and
corporate governance has been elemental to creating a managerial culture that is not in accordance
with cost share, product differentiation, or business regulation/taxation. Proposed solutions
abbreviated In order to create a culture that will be more open to consolidation, small companies
who have more stake to gain than lose should form mergers in order to prove the validity of
mergers. Introduction The shipping industry sustains an approximate 90% of global trade products,

The Corrupt Of Prohibition In The 1920 s
On January 16 of 1920, The 18th amendment went into effect. The 18th amendment restricted the
manufacture, transportation, import, export, and sale of alcoholic beverages. Prohibition, as this
time came to be known, did not end until December 5, 1933, when the 21st amendment was
passed and ratified, ending National Prohibition. Supporters of Prohibition believed that it would
help control social problems and economic problems as well. What Prohibition did was the totally
opposite, Prohibition became a failure. Prohibition led to an increase in organize crime because
violent criminals rose to powers, alcoholic related crimes increased, and more politicians and police
officials became corrupt.

The Day Of Year Thou Mayst
The Speaker in That Time of Year Thou Mayst in Me Behold
We re all going to die. At the end of the game, no matter how sinful or pious, the king and the
pawn return to the same box. It is the most self evident of truths, one discovered by all people at
some point in their lives and acknowledged by every culture, every religion, and every civilization
since the dawn of time. And yet as individuals, the concept of death boggles our minds to the
extent that we cannot comprehend it in its essence: nothingness so dimensionless we can t even
miss it. Death troubles us so deeply that we lie to ourselves; we convince ourselves of our own
immortality either through the idea of eternity in heaven and God, the coming marvels of genetic
engineering, our deep legacy to our family or nation, or even just by craving our name into stone,
all of which we perceive as eternal. This way of thinking, while arguably necessary for the sake
of our own sanity, helps us maintain our delusion immortality. In the rare occasions when we do
acknowledge our impermanence, it is often through insipid catchphrases like YOLO. In stark
contrast to this idea that there s always tomorrow, Shakespeare s sonnet That Time of Year Thou
Mayst in Me Behold addresses the epiphany of human impermanence through the lens of a dying
man, likely of old age or poor health, who acknowledges his approaching conclusion and must
reconcile this reality with the fact that his lover (perhaps his wife) will long outlive him. This

traditional trimester schedule, and Morro Bay High School (MBHS), running on a semester long
block schedule. The district claimed that the current schedule at SLOHS was inequitable to all
students within the district, as students at SLOHS are given more opportunities to take a variety of

alternative schedule (not the trimester) or accept the fallback traditional semester schedule for the
next schoolyear.
According to the district superintendent, the inequity was due to the

Southwest Flight 1248
Some of the witnesses did not realize what was actually happening such as; we thought it was an
automobile accident and we looked out the window and we saw the tail section of a Southwest
airliner laying across the street (ASN, 2007). Further, witnesses also reported that people were
running and ambulances were coming down the street (ASN, 2007). The witness reports for the
accident of flight 1248 were not a significant source of the investigation. Findings. The NTSB
made 23 findings relative to this accident, discussing crew qualifications, use of reverse thrust, use
of automatic brakes, landing conditions, landing surface condition guidance, and Engineering
Materials Arresting System (EMAS) (FAA, 2005). Probable Cause The National Transportation
Safety Board (NTSB) determined that the probable cause of the accident was the pilots failure to
use available reverse thrust in a timely manner to safely slow or stop the airplane after landing,
which resulted in a runway overrun. This failure occurred because the pilots first experience and
lack of familiarity with the airplane s autobrake system distracted them from using reverse thrust
during the challenging landing (FAA, 2005). According to the NTSB report of accident flight 1248,

The Safety Board concludes that the pilots first use of the airplane s autobrake system during a
challenging landing situation led to the pilots distraction from the otherwise routine task of
deploying the thrust reversers promptly after touchdown (NTSB, 2007). Therefore, if the pilots had
been presented with stopping margins associated with the input winds or had known that the
stopping margins calculated by the OPC for the 737 700 already assumed credit for the use of
thrust reversers, the pilots may have elected to divert (NTSB,

Relationships With Nature In A Terrible Matriarchy
We can say that Easterine kire in her Novel A Terrible Matriarchy tried to portray some of the
relationship shared with nature by the people especially the Angami community though nature was
not one of her major theme in the novel, kire in her novel talks about how women folks would
tend their fields and do the house hold works while men would stay in the village guarding it from

The Mexican American War Began in 1846 and ended in 1848. During this time many battles
were occurred in different cities. We lost many people but gained a great area of land. For
example three important events are the battle of Palo Alto, the battle of Buena Vista and the
Treaty Of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The Mexican American War is important in American history
because it further changed our borders forever. Three important players in the Mexican
American War were Zachary Taylor, James K. Polk and Santa Anna. Each of them played an
important part in the war. A few days before the Treaty Of Guadalupe, gold was discovered in
California which made the Americans want to come farther west more. The battle of Palo Alto

Ireland In 1494
In its strenuous efforts to subject Ireland to English Rule, the English government strategized on
how to most effectively surrender the Irish people to its supreme governance. One of the most
influential if not destructive methods was the implementation of Poynings Law in 1494, which
under its terms maintained that all Irish Bills be submitted by the English chief governor in Ireland
to the King and Privy Council by way of the English Parliament. Only Bills that were subsequently
approved and returned to Ireland under the Great Seal of Englandcould be presented to the Irish
parliament. The purpose of this bill followed a number of other direct changes to Ireland that
stemmed from King Henry II and King Henry VIII and their momentous wish to rescue Ireland
from the decades of neglect England had subjugated the state collectively to, up until the sixteenth
century. The original purpose of the passage of the law in 1494 had been to to curb the
independence of Ireland s Anglo Norman chief governors. However, it became most destructive

those of his followers, put acres of fertile land in Munster at the disposal of the English

Jungles And The Jungle Books
Upon studying children s literature, one is likely to notice that throughout various texts, there are a
number of common and recurring elements. One theme that is present in many stories is that of
jungles and forests (for the purposes of this paper, these will be discussed as if they were one in the
same). In Rudyard Kiplings The Jungle Books and Lewis Carroll s Through the Looking Glass,
we see both jungles and forests represented in different ways, however it can be argued that they
serve similar functions in both texts. In both stories, forests and jungles are treated as liminal
spaces, as a sort of limbo between one state of being and another. In The Jungle Books, the jungle
that Mowgliand the animals live in is portrayed as the threshold at which the laws of man end and
the laws of nature begin, while in Through the Looking Glass, forests are portrayed as obstacles
through which one must pass in order to reach a destination. Mowgli fulfils his destiny within the
jungle by being raised there, while Alice passes through several forests in order to reach her place
as queen on the chess board. Thus, forests and jungles in both texts function not only as liminal
spaces, but as transformative agents which mold the protagonist into the person they must be in
order to succeed in their story.
In general, forests are a very common element of children s literature, even dating back to the
stories collected by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. From children being sent out into the

In the early 1940s, the world was drawn into another world war that pitted the allied forces against
both Nazi Germany in the European theater and the Japanese in the Pacific theater. The attack on
Pearl Harbor was the final straw that convinced the United States to enter against both the Germans

The Legal Protections For Disabled People
Disability in America Legal protections for disabled people in America are essential because
disabled people face overwhelming discrimination, and the legislation helps provides equality in an
unfair world.
Imagine driving home late at night, falling asleep behind the wheel, and swerving into oncoming
traffic. When you wake up in the hospital, you can t use your legs. You might not be disabled
today, but what about tomorrow? Some people are born with a disability, and some people become
disabled. Some disability rights activists use the term temporarily abled to describe how there
isn t a line set in stone between us and them . Disabled people face discrimination because they
are dehumanized and seen as lesser than abled people. As a result, politically correct terms used
to describe disabled people change frequently, an example of the euphemism treadmill . Ableism
is when disabled people are seen as broken and able people are seen as superior, which results in
words used to describe disability becoming insults. When a child calls someone stupid, or
retarded, or dumb, or an idiot, or lame, or moronic, they aren t thinking about how the words they
are using oppress disabled people by turning who they are into an insult. Our society raises
children to believe that some people are better than others, an example of the entrenched
discrimination disabled people face. Only 45 countries in the world have laws that specifically
protect disabled people (CITE), but disabled

Rhetorical Appeals In I Have A Dream Speech
During the 1960s, racism and discrimination were an enormous issue in the United States. To
highlight problems with African Americans Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave one of the greatest
speeches in modern history when he spoke the words I Have a Dream on August 28, 1963. King
began his speech by saying, I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as
the greatest demonstration of freedom in the history of our nation (King). He emphasized on the
racial injustice and his dream for unifying society to bring equilibrium back. Throughout the speech,
he used a very sophisticated voice and kept the audience engaged while carefully choosing the
language and structure of his speech. Using keywords like we, our, dream, justice, freedom on his
speech, King highlighted the importance of the theme.
While listening and reading the speech, the civil rights leader divided his speech into two halves.
The first half of the speech he is emphasizing on the injustice toward the African Americans, and the
second half he talks about the future of the Nation living the American dream equally and united.

which essentially meant that the government would take any and all necessary measures to
maintain a sense of peace and stability. Strict laws and policies were imposed to ensure that the
nation would continue to evolve and change. This day marked the beginning of the infamous Reign
of Terror. The Reign of Terror was a period of turmoil in France following the onset of the French

exactly what caused this mayhem simply because no one lived during that period. Regardless,
the event left the nation in a state of shock and uncertainty. The National Convention was forced
to make the difficult decision to place all of its power into an entirely new political branch,
knowing that something different was needed to save France. Before he was chosen to run the
Committee of Public Safety, Robespierre was revered for his courage and sheer determination.
He ridiculed the notion that a monarchy could last and instead pushed for democratic reforms
(Document 2). Robespierre spoke to the people of France with an air of confidence that quickly
won them over. His morals were fundamentally based on the ideals of early enlightenment
thinker Jean Jacques Rousseau. Both men asserted that man is good by nature but poisoned by
society. Robespierre also believed that all men deserve to be treated as equals in the eyes of the
law (Document 3). The central cause of the French Revolution was the nation s lack of a strong
military in the face of civil war and foreign invasion. Rebuilding the military was arguably the
most significant advancement that occurred during the Reign of Terror. Robespierre created a
law called the Law of Universal Conscription in an effort to propel the French military to a
reasonable state. This law mandated all men between the ages of 18 and 40 to join the army.
Additionally, women were called into service to make uniforms. Robespierre further ensured that
his troops were well fed and prepared to spring into combat at any moment by reserving the best
bread for soldiers only. After decades of internal and external conflict,

Budget
This is a proposal for CIO manufacturing training exercises set to begin later this year. In this
summary I will discuss milestones, project budget and duration for the budget to give an idea of
what kind of time and resources will be needed to accomplish our goal of training our management
on the new compliance system. The total duration of the training exercise will comprise 3 months.
This will allow time for resources to be coordinated, training teachers to be hired and training
software to be integrated. For one hardware purchases will need to be made to accommodate the ...

Training software will need to be purchased to account for the training exercises and these will total
an estimated 400 dollars.
Actual training will take place over two days so that we can house a large number of employees
while working very quickly at training them efficiently. Duration estimated were decided by
looking at average training times used by similar businesses and the type of training we are
trying to achieve. The overall project budget will be split into 4 quarters to highlight the expenses
needed at each time frame. This will help to breakdown the overall budget into smaller more
manageable expenses to get more detail into what is being spent and what it is being spent on.
These quarterly expenditures will do a lot to keep costs as efficient as possible and provide a closer
look at how these resources are being divided. There will be a total of 15 managers participating
in this training exercise and each one will have things such as hardware resources, food, flight
expenditures as well as trainers and consultants to help them along the way. This will leave
nothing left to chance and provide all available resources to complete the training in a fast and
efficient way. While many of these figures are close estimates there will be unused expenses
toward the end to allow for fourth quarter expenses to be provided for if need be. The three month
project will account for all stages of the training process from beginning to end for estimated grand

Hillary Clinton Twitter Comparison
Throughout the course of time, politicians have used the media to promote their platform. Now, in
this modern age, Twitter has proved to be a dominant platform for presidential candidates. But who
are these two rival politicians, how do they campaign, and who outperforms the other?
The two candidates are Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Hillary Clinton is the democratic
nominee, she is the former Secretary of State under the Obama Administration. Donald Trump is
the republican nominee. a successful american businessman. Both actively campaign for their
position in the white house. While they both use Twitter, neither campaign exactly as the other.

I believe Hillary is more adept at establishing credibility, with her use of retweeting thoughts, but
Trump s pathos is certainly stronger than Hillary s. Both flounder in the face of Logos, although
given the medium, Logos is rather difficult to use. Trump does promote himself using twitter,
through Hashtags for topics, but Hillary succeeds at using twitter to it s fullest as she also retweets.
With this in mind, I would give the name of better rhetorician to Hillary.

Juvenile Justice System
There is no such thing as a perfect world. People of all ages are constantly committing crimes
ranging from thefts to heinous murders. An issue that has been up for debate is whether or not the
justice system can try juvenile delinquents in adult courts and sentence them to life without parole.
In most states, there are juvenile justice systems where teens are tried as a juveniles and put in
juvenile facilities. The main purpose of these facilities is to give juveniles the opportunity to
rehabilitate, not to only punish them. The issue is that juveniles are being tried as adults and placed
in adult prisons. Fortunately, the death penalty is not an option for youth offenders, but life
sentence without parole is still generously handed out to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Providing effective rehabilitation programs and the right help could achieve that and more.
Typically, juveniles who commit murder are raised in negative and hurtful atmospheres. The
environments in which they grow up could be unhealthy and unstable. Fourteen year old
Alfonso Davis grew up in an fatherless environment where his mother was an addict and his
grandmother could hardly take care of the both of them. The lack of parental attention led Davis
to commit an irreversible mistake. He found family in a gang, and one night, two much older
gang members brought him along on what he believed was going to be a robbery, two men were
killed, though Davis never fired his gun... sentenced to life with the possibility of parole
(NewsOne Staff). The lack of family attention for Davis led him to believe that a gang could fit
that position and fill the hole in his heart. However, it led him to a life in a cell with no hope in
being free again. Since Davis was sent to prison, he turned his life around without the help of
anyone surrounding him. He received the chance to have an education and now he writes poetry
and helps others in prison quit gangs. Davis is not eligible for parole but after two decades in
prison, he is hoping to prove that he has been rehabilitated and deserves his freedom. Change did
not come to Davis; he wanted to become a better person and changed his life around. Davis found
hope behind bars.

The Princess Bride By William Goldman
For this assignment, I chose to watch The Princess Bride, a film based on the book written by
William Goldman. The story is of a beautiful maiden named Buttercup. When she hears word of
her true love, Westley s, ship being taken over by the Dread Pirate Roberts in which there were no
survivors. Upon Westley s death, Buttercup reluctantly agrees to marry Prince Humperdinck, who
seems to have a plan of his own. When Westley returns as the Dread Pirate Roberts, he finds
Buttercup in grave danger in the hands of Vizzini, the man we later learn was hired by
Humperdinck to kill his bride and frame Florin s sworn enemy, Guilder. After using his sword
fighting skills and strength to outwit Inigo, the Spanish swordsman, and Fizzik, the giant, he then
uses his wit to kill Vizzini, Buttercup s capturer. Once Buttercup is able to identify Pirate Roberts
as Westley, they continue on their journey, only to be thwarted by Prince Humperdinck, Count
Rugen, and their men. Buttercup is then tricked to believe that they let Westley go free, even
though they have him tortured and eventually killed. In need of his skills and strength, Fizzik and
Inigo miraculously save Westley in order to seek revenge on Inigo s father s killer, Count Rugen.
The three of them then break into the castle, Inigo gets his revenge, and save Buttercup, riding off
on four white horses. As in every plot line, there are various conflicts that occur in this film.
Conflict, as we have learned, is a disagreement between

Inferno In Dante s The Dark Wood Of Error
In the beginning of his epic, Inferno, Dante seems to have abandoned the true path (1.12). He is
lost in a dark forest, which symbolizes not only Dante s loss of morality, but all of humanity s
sins on Earth. The Dark Wood of Error is a foreshadowing of what the afterlife would be like for
Dante without God and without any meaning. Dante appears to be suffering through a mid life
crisis as he flirts with the idea of death, saying, so bitter death is hardly more severe (1.7). Dante
has lost his dignity and moral direction following his exile from Florence. Dante must travel
through Helland witness the worst crimes ever committed by humans. By traveling through the
depths of Satan s world, Dante is given an opportunity to reconnect with Christianity. Many people
claim that Dante journeys through Hell for revenge, but in fact he is hoping to reset his own
moral compass and find God. As Dante explores the Second Circle of Hell, he is horrified by the
punishments that the sinners must suffer through. When he hears the story of Francesca and
Paolo s lustful actions, Dante relates deeply to their stuggles because he reflects on his own sins
and believes he may be cast to a similar fate in the afterlife. Dante reacts to the story when he
says, I fainted, as if I had met my death. / And then I fell as a dead body falls (5.142 143). Dante
faints from compassion for the two sinners pitiful story. Dante struggles to grasp the wrongdoing
these people have participated in to be placed in Hell because he continues to search for the noble
qualities in everyone. On the one hand, Dante believes God s punishment for the lustful sinners,
relentless winds and storms, is unethical. On the other hand, this belief is naive because it is known
that all of God s punishments are just. The lustful are condemned to an eternity in Hell because
they did not care about their actions on Earth, so the raging storm that torments them is not
concerned with what is in its path. Dante is not only attempting to discover the possible
consequences of his own actions, but also learning to trust in God s judgement. Many readers argue
that Dante s intentions during his journey into Hell were to gain revenge on his enemies. In each

Sadducees Research Paper
My selection is over a dispute that is happening between the Sadducees and the Pharisees on the
issue of false witnesses, those who had given false testimony, and when they should be executed.
The decision comes down to two choices whether should be executed after the trial or after the
accused had been executed. The Sadducees are arguing that the perjured witnesses should only be
executed if they successfully get the person they accused executed. It is the official action of
execution that should be the reason for the execution of the witnesses not just the intent and
premeditated false testimony. The Sadducees arguing this position based on the verse, in the Torah,
that states a life for life which essentially meant for the Sadducees that... Show more content on

The Pharisees stance would mean that the accused would be alive and the witness dead. The
Pharisees are trying to operate in this position based on two separate verses stated in the Torah.
The one verse being the life for life and the other verse being you shall do to him as he schemed
to do to his fellow . The Pharisees use the second quote mainly for their stance. Overall, the
balance of these two verses would be that these false witnesses are not executed immediately after
their testimony. Furthermore, it did not mean that accused had to be executed for the witnesses to
be executed. In my understanding of the selection, three different decisions and events had to
come together in order for the execution of the perjured witnesses to take place. Witnesses would
be executed if the trial ended, the accused was found guilty, and the witnesses were proven to be
false witnesses. This selection is coming from the texts of Mishnah which is a collection of the oral
traditions of Jewish law that expand on Hebrew Scriptures and other aspects of Jewish thought and

Young Goodman Brown Character Analysis
Why are humans so judgmental of each other and of themselves, and with the harshest
application? What causes such abysmal behavior? Is it because of low self esteem, envy, fear of
rejection/feeling threatened or part of our culture or religion. Whatever the reasons Young
Goodman Brown and A Good Man Is Hard to Find illustrates the dangers of being judgmental.
Brown see his self as a good person prior to entering the forest, and the grandmother from A Good
Man Is Hard to Find see herself as an upstanding southern woman until the end shows her different.
Let s explore Young Goodman Brownto see if there is a lesson to be learned about the dangers of
being judgmental. Brown is a young man living in the seventeen centuries and in Salem a town
known as the capital of witchcraft. Hawthorne references three dark events from the Puritans
history: the Salem Witch Trials of 1692, the Puritan intolerance of the Quakers, and King Philip s
War. During the Salem Witch Trials, one of the most nightmarish episodes in Puritan history, the
villagers of Salem killed twenty five innocent people who were accused of being witches. The
witch hunts often involved accusation based on revenge, jealousy, botched child delivery and other
reason that had little to do with perceived witchcraft. Based on the history of the town it is easy to
see why Young Goodman Brown is easily in tangled with corrupt thoughts about his friends and
family because of Puritan history. Coupled with Brown, going

Damnation of a Canyon
The Damnation of a Canyon By Edward Abbey Not many people know of the used to be 150
mile excursion that the Glen Canyon had to offer. Not many people know how to sail a raft
down a river for a week. Not many people know how to interact with nature and the animals that
come with it. We seem to come from a world that is dependent on time and consumed in money.
Edward Abbey is what you would call an extreme environmentalist. He talks about how it was an
environmental disaster to place a dam in which to create Lake Powell, a reservoir formed on the
border of Utah and Arizona. He is one of the few that have actually seen the way Glen Canyon
was before they changed it into a reservoir. Today, that lake is used by over a million

He seems to argue the В‘wheelchair ethos of the wealthy, upper middle class American slob .
Well, excuse the people who were born paralyzed from the waist down, and would like to
experience the forces nature in its natural state of beauty and grace. He seems to generalize the
typical population of people who visit Lake Powell on an unscientific basis, upper middle class
American slobs. So does that mean that a lower class family doesn t have the money to do such
recreational activity? And that we are slobs because we like to view nature in its own
environment? One last point in which should be heard is that, Edward Abbey states that now
that the river is closed up people cannot get a raft, spend about forty dollars, give up 7 10 days,
and rely only on the goodness of fresh catfish just to float down a river. In today s society people
don t have time. We would rather spend the hundreds of dollars to get a nice speedboat, buy real
food, and only take maybe the weekend to enjoy the great outdoors. We enjoy the freshness of a
shower everyday, going to the bathroom with flushable device, eating food with the right bit of
garlic taste, in other words the comfort of home. Even if they did take down the dam and offer
such rafting trips, do you honestly think a person could leave their cell phone at home? In
conclusion, I do think that Edward Abbey made a great

Menstrual Taboos On Children s Mental And Physical Health
Menstrual Taboos
In general, menstruation is not seen as an appropriate topic of conversation. People are often
uncomfortable with the very idea of it, and some are even ignorant of its function. Numerous
religions and cultures regard a woman s monthly period as impure, unclean, or even dangerous.
The practices and views resulting from these widespread beliefs can be harmful to women s mental
and physical health, as well as their livelihood and relationships with others. The purpose of this
paper is to examine menstrual taboos in various cultures and throughout history, compare the views
of believers of these ideas with those skeptic of them, and apply this issue to psychology.

When impregnation does not occur, the endometrium, along with blood and vaginal discharge,
leaves the uterus through the vagina, and the cycle repeats itself (Hyde DeLamater, 2014).
Nothing of this process indicates any toxicity in women, or any effect on them outside of the
physical. It is a monthly biological cycle that occurs in fertile women to prepare for the possibility
of conception, and any negative view towards it or the women experiencing it has its source in
ignorance, fear, or in the words of books written thousands of years before anyone even had an
inkling of how menstruation works.
History
Without knowing the reason why menstruation occurs, it is a scary idea; a woman, uninjured,
begins to bleed for days from the area of childbirth and intercourse every month. It would be easy
to relate this occurrence, to something mystical and powerful. The vagina itself has been a thing
of mystery, with some cultures considering it to be a channel to the beyond; babies are born
through it, and without knowledge of how they develop, some believed that newborns simply
came from another plane of existence (Magli, 2009, p. 91). The belief that a woman s body holds
a portal to some other world makes it frightening and possibly dangerous, and many traditions have
manifested in an attempt to control this supposed power, such as infibulation (cutting the labia so
when the tissue heals, it creates a barrier over the vaginal opening) and separation of women

Romanticism And Ralph Waldo Emerson
Romanticism and Emerson
Poetry is something that everyone views and interprets differently. From the rhythmic qualities, to
the symbolism, no opinion is wrong. In the 18th century a differently style of poetry came about
known as Romanticism, or the Romantic Era. Romanticism focuses on several characteristics
imagination, emotion, nature, personal life, symbolism, and individualism. Kubla Khan by
Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Tintern Abbey both highlight these ideas as well as Ralph Waldo
Emerson. With help from Emerson s ideas, we can help understand Coleridge s dark views of poetry
. Ralph Waldo Emerson believed that poetry is the everlasting endeavor to express the spirit of the

Similar to Kubla Khan , Wordsworth starts his poem off by saying Five years have past; fiver
summers, with the length of five long winters! . This to me is important, because it shows how
so much time has passed, but yet for him nothing has changed. Wordsworth then questions on
whether or not he should leave his secluded area. Emerson at this point would then take this and
say how the figurative use of Wordsworth to state how its first the fact; second its impression, or
what I thin of it . Emerson would use the literal impression of 5 years going by, followed by the
descriptive part of time going by. The day is come when I again repose , also shows the
impression of how much time has passed by. The character that Wordsworth is painting, shows us
that he has been secluded for so long that he does not necessarily know how to participate in life,
or act around other people. With some uncertain notice, as might seem. Of vagrant dwellers in the
houseless woods, Or of some Hermit s cave, where by his fire The Hermit sits alone. Just by those
couple of lines, we truly do understand how alone this character is. Since Emerson does believe that
poetry is an everlasting endeavor to express the spirit, we may interpret that Wordsworth, he, cannot
achieve something, which would result in secluding himself from everything and everyone. Even in

The Use Of Rggt Inhibitors Doesn t Exhibit Any Toxicity...
The use of RGGT inhibitors doesn t exhibit any toxicity in mouse models (Taylor et al., 2011).
This is supported by comparison to gunmetal mice that harbour a RGGT mutation leading to 80%
reduction of RGGT function. There are mild dysfunctional phenotypes such as hypopigmentation
and altered platelet synthesis. This suggests that a decreased RGGT activity, such that Rab
proteins would be hypoprenylated, would not be lethal if targeted (Recchi and Seabra, 2012). The
decrease in RGGT activity is only specific to certain tissues, leading to the idea that this mutation
does not affect all Rabs equally (Hume, et al. 2001).
NE10790 is a phosphonocarboxylate analogue of the more potent bisphosphonate risedronate (BP
RIS), and contains a carboxylate group instead of a phosphonate group. NE10790 is a specific
inhibitor of RGGT, whereas BPs are non specific inhibitors of Rab prenylation. They act on
farnesyl diphosphate synthase to inhibit prenylation of a variety of proteins such as Rho and Ras,
seen in Figure 9 (Gong, Altman and Klein, 2011). The use of BPs in clinical trials has been
successful in decreasing mortality from lytic bone disease in multiple myeloma. There is also
evidence of anti tumour effects, such as apoptosis and arresting the cell cycle, as well as in other
tumour cell types associated with bone. BPs have also been investigated in vitro on breast and
prostate cancers, as they commonly metastasise to bone. Studies show inhibition of invasion and

The Stories Of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is a 19th century author who is known by his stories of Sherlock
Holmes. Sherlock Holmes is a crime series based in the Victorian era when feminists in this
period were calling for women and children to have equal protection under the law (Miller 55).
He is consider one of most known iconic British characters created who solves mysteries with

Holmes s visual approach, his extraordinary powers (Doyle 240) on crime cases, female
criminals either get the last laugh or outwit him. As years went by many adaptations brought the
adventures to life with their own twists and turns on their take on the story plot especially when
it comes to criminality and femininity (Miller 30). Such as the BBC television show version of
Sherlock of its version of The Abominable Bride or even CBS Elementary of its version of Irene
Adler and Moriarty in The Woman episode, the question lays are the views truly different or any
better when it comes to representing female criminals or women in general. Female criminals
comes into play in many of Conan Doyle s Sherlock series and they somehow women is able to

Military Rank And Inequality
Felicia Severy ANTH 484 Professor Mary Nolan Rough Draft Military Rank and Inequality
Introduction Inequality within the military is not a new concept. Gender inequality is
particularly well known and everyone is familiar with the concept of military rank; benefits
increase as rank increases. Lower ranking military service personnel receive smaller, lower
quality base houses, are expected to work longer hours, receive less BAH (Basic Allowance for
Housing) regardless of family size, and may not receive all of the support services entitled to
them. How does the rank of an enlisted member impact his or her family? Does inequality within
the ranks have an affect on morale and/or quality of life? Is rank inequality acceptable to military
families? Literature Review Inequality in the Military: An Examination of Promotion Time for
Black and White Enlisted Men (Butler 1976) asserts that black enlisted men are subject to racism
during promotion time. When all things are equal between a black and white military member,
black personnel take longer to move up in rank. Thus, black military personnel are subject to
inequality. Widening health inequalities among U.S. military retirees since 1974 (Edwards 2008)
concludes that health inequality has been widening between the years of 1974 and 2004. Military

The Pros And Cons Of International Adoption
There is one thing that most people look forward to for their entire lives. Grow up, get married and
have that perfect, happy family. Sometimes for this to happen, it involves adoption. Whether
someone wants to start a family with it, or if they want to expand their family. No matter what the
initial reason is adoptionis everywhere and involves many people. Most people don t go through
life and say that they don t know anybody who is adopted. Many people are related to, or know at
least one person, that was adopted. So all countries should let people continue saying that by
letting them adopt whether they are from a foreign country or not. It is estimated that there are 2
billion kids in the world. Of those 2 billion, 15 million are living without parents. Millions more,
not counting the 2 billion, have been abandoned by their parent or guardian forcing them to fend
for themselves (SIRS, International Adoption Babies without Borders, Para 1). While there are
many things that we can do to help this problem, America seems to be focusing on other issues.
Instead of looking to take care of the people of tomorrow, the politicians and others are focusing on
the present only.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Types Of Alternate Dispute Resolutions
A traditional judicial process such as litigation is a settlement of an agreement between the parties
involved in a dispute that is heard and decided by the judge and a jury in court. Due to the rising

way to come to an agreement. Many states and corporations have been experimenting with ADR

negotiation, mediation, and arbitration. Roger LeRoy Miller, author of Business Law Today stated
that, Today, more than 90 percent of cases are settled before trial through some form of ADR (84).
Each process is used differently amongst parties and each has its own benefits. Alternate dispute
resolutions tend to have lower costs and the process is much shorter. The use of alternate dispute
resolutions is growing at a fast rate because many businesses and corporations find it to be an easier
way to come to a settlement. Although alternate dispute resolutions have been recognized for their
advantages its still important not to overlook the disadvantages of each.
Generally, the simplest form of alternate dispute resolution is negotiation. Negotiation allows the
parties to meet informally with or without their attorney s present to settle their dispute. This
process does not require a neutral third party to be at the meeting because the parties reach a
resolution on their own terms.

The Global Problem of Harveting Organs
The harvesting of organs is a huge problem worldwide. The sale of organs may result in an
individual being murdered simply for his or her organs (Hongda.) In order to buy food
impoverished families only choice may be to sell their organs (Callahan.) Those who are
precipitants of organs coming from Inmates are taking huge health risk. Jeff Testerman, author of
Organs of Condemned sought for Transplant , stated The prison population is such a high risk
group, particularly for hepatitis and AIDS. When someone receives an organ from a donor
within a prison s walls, they are not always assured of the health security of the prisoner s organs
of which they are getting. There are many tragic stories told of someone being abducted, murdered,
or sedated all just for his or her kidneys. These stories are not fictional but a shocking reality
(Callahan.) Over 10,000 illegal organ transplants are taking place every year (Campbell.) As
improvements in technology and medicine are made the number of organ transplants per year also
increase, due to the escalating amount of sources (Hongda.) The Chinese government needs to
constitute and enforce laws prohibiting the exploitation of organ harvesting. There are limited laws
that regulate the harvesting of organs overseas. The Declaration of Istanbul of 2008 was put into
motion by all one hundred nations. This was a statement against global organ exploitation
(Campbell.) The Declaration of Istanbul however does not prohibit the harvesting

Middle Childhood and Adolescence Development
Middle childhood development primarily entails growth previous to puberty during early school
years; yet in contrast, adolescence signifies puberty as an inevitable biological change during that
period. These stages of development refine the gradual transformation of psychological, physical,
and social ways that enlighten any life span. This essay thoroughly will examine adolescent
development and include positive and negative consequences of preliminary actions surrounding
this time. An annotation will provide an extensive description of changes during middle childhood
and adolescence ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Group formations or cliques normally form during middle and high school years. These individual
s biases are normally superficial concerns that divide adolescents into groups of similar qualities
such as intelligence and athletic ability. School systems help in the division of peer groups with
school sponsored clubs but adolescents facilitate the attitude of how the group thinks and behave.

Adolescent Egocentrism
Adolescent egocentrism refers to a mental development limited in adolescents by others.
Adolescents are able or are capable to feel when others paying attention to their appearance and
behavior. For example, adolescents spend a significant time making them to look good in front of
everybody; adolescents are too worried about their appearance and behavior. This type of
egocentrism is known in teens between the ages of 11 or 12 years to 16 year old. Adolescents
usually create an imaginary audience in their own self consciousness (Berger, 2008). In many cases,
this phase passes overtime, but understanding, and patience is required throughout this phase.
According to Berger (2008), people focus their eyes on this type of adolescent and the way how
they (adolescents) think. That is, egocentric adolescents have

The Civil Rights Movement Of North Carolina Essay
By the summer of 1964, David Cunningham writes in Klansville, U.S.A., the Carolina Klan
established a demanding schedule of nightly rallies across the state, where they enlisted thousands
of dues paying members. More than that, at its mid 1960s peak the Klan s presence in North
Carolina eclipsed klan membership in all other southern states combined. (Cunningham most likely
put klan in lowercase because of the groups disorganization.) North Carolinashould have been the
state where the KKK thrived most during the mid 1960s Cunningham reports that in mid 1966 it
had 192 Klaverns, (branches of the Ku Klux Klan), and 52.2 percent of the total Klan membership
in the 10 states of the South was a mystery to many and a source of considerable dismay to the
state s leadership, which prided itself on its nonviolent response to the challenges posed by the
civil rights movement. The state had been described by V.O. Key, in his immensely influential (if
now somewhat dated) Southern Politics in State and Nation (1949), as energetic and ambitious
with a reputation for progressive outlook and action in many phases of life, especially industrial
development, education, and race relations, a judgment that had been confirmed by the election in
1960 of a notably capable and progressive governor, Terry Sanford.
North Carolina has always been a much more complicated place than its publicists have claimed. If

An Investigation of a Language Profile of a Mother-Tongue...
1. Introduction As 50% or more of the world s towns and cities are bilingual or multilingual
communities (Pennington et al. 1992), quantities of research studies have been carried out on
language behavior or choice of a certain ethnic group in a bilingual or multilingual community. This
research focuses on the language behavior of a mother tongue Mandarin speaker who is having
graduate study in Hong Kong. Hong Kong is a typical metropolis immersed in multilingualism,
since there are considerably diverse ethnic groups in this area (2011 Census Office, 2012).
According to the report of 2011 Census Office (2012), the number of mother tongue Standard

Though there has been a much wider tolerance of Mandarin speaking in different contexts in Hong
Kong (Chen, 2012), Mandarin speakers experience language alternation in this triglossic
community. Many studies have been conducted to examine the language behavior of a specific
ethnic group. Gibbons (1987) and Pennington et al. (1992) carried out empirical studies on
investigating code switching and code mixing of HongKongers in different communicative contexts
in Hong Kong and their attitudes towards language alternation. Pannu (1994) focused her research
on Indian ethnic group in Hong Kong, which explored their language repertoire and perception of
their language use. As Pennington et al. (1992, p.3) described, the ultimate goal of those
investigations is to model language choice of different groups in Hong Kong by presenting their
language use. As previously demonstrated, mainland Chinese students have taken up the major
proportion of non local tertiary students in Hong Kong, and it will probably be an evitable tendency
in the following years (Yeung, 2012). Nonetheless, little study has been undertaken to shed light on
language profile around sociolinguistic question of who speaks what language to whom, when,
where and why (Fishman, 1972) on mother tongue

Customer Service And Customer Satisfaction
Service is defined in many different ways, all of which can be seen as accurate. An example of
one of them pointed out by Cook (2008 p.185) Customer service is what the customer says it is .
This assignment will be examining the importance of customer service, delivered by business and
its employees and why customersatisfaction is important especially within the service sector. To
illustrate this, an example of a bad customer service that was condoned by myself will be provided.
At the end of last year in summer semester break I flew to my country to unite with my family.
While going there I bought a DSLR camera for my younger brother as a present. After buying the
camera from a Nikon brand now the necessity to buy a lens become inevitable to use the camera.
As because I and my younger have no prior knowledge in buying lens and there are so many
choices in the market upon on the advice from few friends, we went to shop named Gadget Gear
situated inside of a large shopping mall in our city. The shop was a third party dealer who is not
authorized dealer of Nikon brand but has good reputation as I have heard before. Once I reached

Bell Hook s analysis of Sheryl Sandberg s wealth and social status gives the reader a better

Study on Delhi
The lack of standard concepts in research is perhaps the most significant difficulty in the
comparison of results between studies.[1] In the running injury field, many researchers have noted
the problem of how to define a running related injury.[2 4] Some investigators have suggested the
need for a standardised definition of running related injury.[2, 5 7] However, a consensushas not yet
been reached; thus, researchers have used different definitions in their studies.[3, 8, 9]
Currently, the rates of prevalence and incidence of running injuries vary between 19% and 92%,
depending on the injury definition adopted in the study. This means that the lack of standardisation
of injury definitions may affect study results.[2, 3, 5, 9 15] For instance, Bovens, et al. [16] used a
broad definition of running related injury as any physical complaint developed in relation with
running activities and causing restriction in running distance, speed, duration or frequency ; they
found an injury incidence of 84.9%. On the other hand, Blair, et al. [17] adopted a more stringent
definition of running related injury as an injury that causes the runners to stop running for at least
seven days ; they found a lower injury incidence of 24%. The higher rate of injury found in the
first study may be due to the lack of a specific period of interruption or time off from running in the
definition used, in contrast to the definition used in the second study, which clearly specifies the
period of

However, NFL players are at risk of losing their jobs if they use the drug. Marijuana use is a

50% to 75% of NFL players use marijuana as an alternative to painkillers. It can be a possible
preventative treatment for Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) which is a neurodegenerative
brain disease caused by repeated impacts to the skull , which the blockbuster movie Concussion is

depression, suicidality, and dementia are associated with CTE. A study in 2015 at Boston

considerably more safe for the athletes. Players prefer marijuana over painkillers because
marijuana is not addictive and will not have the same effect opioid painkillers will have when
their careers are over. Former NFL player Nate Johnson stated to CBS news reporter Barry

obstacles that impede the building of interpersonal relationships with fellow students. International

understanding class lectures and discussions, and difficulties communicating concerns and view

The Pursuit Of Happiness Is The Universal Search For A Life
The pursuit of happiness is the universal search for a life an individual can feel content and
satisfied with. However, as stated in class, happiness is a fleeting emotion rather than a prolonged
state. Once an individual achieves a sense of happiness it is only a matter of time before they return
to the starting point of their quest. Therefore, happinessalone is not enough to elicit a good life. On
a similar note, in 2004, Professor Martin Seligman gave a TED talk that addressed the current
direction of psychology. He believed the extent of psychology had become the ability to make
miserable people feel less miserable rather than [making] relatively untroubled people happier. As a
result, he and his colleagues developed positive psychology, a branch of psychology that promotes
the components of happiness, well being, and fulfillment to achieve a satisfactory life. The
purpose of this project is to learn about your well being and discover ways to increase the quality
of your life through positive psychology.
For the first section of this project, I performed a self assessment of my well being using Seligman
s five pillars of positive psychology: Positive emotion, engagement, meaning, relationships, and
accomplishment (Grison, Heatherton, Gazzaniga, 2015). I identified the characteristics of each
pillar and compared them to similar criteria in my life. This process provided me with an in depth
understanding of my life in relation to the model. Following the

Rhetorical Devices In The Coquette
Meghan Michalski 19 October 2017
From a scene of constraint and confinement, ill suited to my years and inclination, I have just
launched into society. My heart beats high in expectation of its fancied joys. My sanguine
imagination paints, in alluring colors, the charms of youth and freedom, regulated by virtue and
innocence. Of these, I wish to partake. While I own myself under obligations for the esteem
which you are pleased to profess for me, and in return, acknowledge, that neither your person nor
manners are disagreeable to me, I recoil at the thought of immediately forming a connection, which
must confine me to the duties of domestic life, and make me dependent for happiness, perhaps
too, for subsistence, upon a class of people, who will claim the right of scrutinizing every part of
my conduct; and by censuring those foibles, which I am conscious of not having prudence to
avoid, may render me completely miserable (Foster, 29).
Through rhetorical devices, dramatic language, and tone, Foster manipulates the readers
perspectives and opinions of her characters and provides them with the information to predict Eliza
s inevitable demise before she knows it herself.
Eliza Wharton s yearning for freedom is a fundamental underlying theme to Foster s novel, The
Coquette . Eliza views freedom as the ability to partake in the pleasures and joys of youth without
the restrictions and obligations that come with a commitment to marriage. Furthermore, freedom is
the choice to

one of the strongest branches that they ve ever made, the reason for this is based on the info of
the legislative branch, it can make laws and it can refuse to agree or accept to many things in
order to not let the other branches take over and control the congress. An example is it can refuse
to the appointments of the judges and it can also impeach. The framers decided to build the checks

the congress and they also feared that the branches would change everything

How Does Eliza Haywood Use Disguise In Fantomina
Disguises In the 18th and 19th Century men and women wanted to search for their ideal partner
based on their desires while maintaining societal expectations placed on them. If a man or a
woman did not have certain traits they were considered unsuitable for marriage. In Eliza Haywood
s novel, Fantomina, and Oscar Wilde s play, The Importance of Being Earnest, the impact of these
unrealistic expectations are examined. In Fantomina the protagonist s character uses a variety of
disguises and power to maintain a sexual relationship with her lover. In the importance of Being
Earnest the two male protagonists also use disguises according to Victorian standards to maintain
relationships and lead double lives. In Eliza Haywood s novel Fantomina,... Show more content on

They are also scared that they will lose their self respect in society once their secrets are revealed.

in gaming laptop it rather needs high end resolution which make the gaming laptop program

fairly worthless battery life, we ll be stuck near a plug. I quiet disagree with it since even if we
need a plug, how far the plug would it be since the cable will be long enough to reach. Different
condition if we are talking about somewhere with no plug. That s quiet cranky too since will we
really going to play games even in places with no plug? We can easily imagine how those place

other side, Phil discussed about the weight which is making more burden. I agree with this since
in fact the program and the hardware itself are much thicker than usual laptop. This is also a

  • 2. To Helen And Doolittle s To Helen In ancient times, Helen of Troy was known far and wide for her astounding beauty. She was the wife of Menelaus, a Greek king. She abandoned her husband for a young Trojan prince named Paris. Menelaus enraged by his wife s betrayal, began preparations for what is known as the Trojan War. Now in modern times many writers use this legend as poetic inspiration, but certainly view Helenin different ways. These diverse viewpoints of Helen are made known by the different tones between Edgar Allen Poe s poem To Helen and Hilda Doolittle s poem Helen. In To Helen Poe s speaker has a very adoring view of Helen, while in Helen Doolittle s speaker tells of the fostered hatred Greece has for her. The difference in these views is illustrated in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In To Helen, she is portrayed as an iconic, goddess like beauty, while in Helen, she is viewed as the bane of Greece and is described as frail and detested by others. What is noticed in the poem Helen, is the increasing abhorrence towards her. Throughout the poem each stanza has a line added on to it, symbolizing the increasingly negative feelings toward Helen. This change is implemented into the poem because of how the people of Greece reminisce on past enchantments and past ills. They begin to remember how much they praised Helen for her beauty, and then how much her act of betrayal changed their lives for the worse. To further demonstrate her feelings of hate towards Helen she states, [Greece] could love indeed the maid, only if she were laid, white ash amid funereal cypresses. Using diction such as white ash and funereal cypresses which implies Helen is cremated and a funeral is being held for her. These words signify that the Greek s hate could not be satisfied with anything other than Helen s death. In To Helen, the speaker describes her Lo! in yon brilliant window. How statue like I see thee stand. even idolizing her posture. Another way the speaker views her as a beautiful goddess is his comparison between their relationship and Psyche, from the regions which are Holy Land! The speaker is comparing his relationship to the love between the immortal Cupid and mortal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Greek Mythology And Its Impact On Modern Society Greek mythology has been passed down over many generations and has led to many great tales of heroes and gods. One of these heroes was Odysseus. Although Odysseus is best known as a warrior in the Trojan War, he is also known for leaving an impact on modern society and committing acts of heroism. Odysseus lived an exciting life full of adventure and hardship. Odysseus was the son of King Laertes and Anticlea. While being educated by the centaur Chiron Odysseus showed many characteristics of greatness including great strength and courage (Odysseus). One time he showed this was during a hunting trip with his father and uncle during which he killed a wild boar thus saving the adults he was with. When Odysseus was of age he was passed down the rule of Ithica, also around this time he began to think of marriage. Like many other men of Greek mythology he desired the hand of Helen, the beautiful daughter of King Tyndareus of Sparta (Odysseus). Even though this was unlikely to happen due to the poorness of Ithica, Odysseus tried none the less. When Odysseus went to Sparta as a suitor he displayed his cunning personality, for this he quickly became famous. The King took notice of this and and accepted advice from him concerning how he can be sure of Helen s safety. Odysseus advised Tyndareus to make all the suitors swear an oath to protect Helen and the man she married (Odysseus). They all agreed and a man named Menelaus became the husband of Helen. • 4. Victor Frankenstein Character Analysis Robert Walton is amazed and in awe, while he is traveling to the north pole. His traveling gives him dreams and excitement for what will come during his travels. Robert is also convincing himself that the cold and frost of the north will have many adventures for him. I wonder how much this breeze means to Robert Walton and how he would feel if there was no breeze. I wonder if he will be unmotivated or unable to continue on. I am also imagining his descriptions and thinking whether or not my visions match with his visions and descriptions. Victor Frankenstein is happy about the summer months and the scenery around him. He is happy about the harvest from the farms and just happy about nature in general. I wonder how harvest would look like and why he specifically mentions vines. However, at the same time, those feelings made him forget about his friends and his loved ones, who are far away. Victor broke his promise with his father and has worried his friends. I wonder what would happen if Victor just suddenly appeared to loved ones and friends. I also wonder if his loved ones and friends would be surprised and be happy or be disappointed for not hearing from him. Victor was watching as his monster stood and came alive, while their was a storm in the sky. I wonder why Victor called the storm a noble war that was so, beautiful yet terrific. Is it beautiful because of the clouds and terrific because of the winds and lightning? Victor also watched as a bolt of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Using Synthetic Phonics For Improving Reading Essay Using Synthetic Phonics for Improving Reading Synopsis For this assignment, I will first briefly discuss the value of early reading pre school and the stages of reading. After that I will critically evaluate the history of introducing synthetic phonics reading in primary schools in England. Furthermore, I will investigate the developments and issues which have been brought about the different teaching strategies used in schools and using teaching synthetic phonics in early years to teach first reading. Introduction Learning to read is a valuable and important skill that children acquire from a very early age. Children gain an understanding of the different sounds in our spoken language from a wide range of different experiences and social interaction with their environment. For example, singing and saying rhymes, sharing books, making and listening to music, pretend play, listening to adults and joining in conversations etc ect. as mentioned by Vygotsky (1978) Children s learning begins long before they attend school. And also by Goouch, K., Lambirth, A. (2010). States that Early induction into literacy in affective and engaging events provides children with positive reading lessons before they are able to recognise alphabet symbols or realise the significance of print. And He also highlights on the children s environment and social environment indicating the importance of all adults playing an crucial role in supporting the child s learning not just through ... Consolidation abbreviated Although many companies have flirted with the idea of consolidation, few major companies of top 7 10 performers have made any meaningful headway towards consolidation via mergers. Maritime culture is heavily steeped in neoclassical model of economics, and the utilitarian ultra capitalist teachings of Ayn Rand and Milton Friedman. Basically it has become a null point for powerful companies to work towards consolidation since they have natural business advantages already fixed in place. APM Maersk When interpreting the figures it is key to remember that the top carrier of goods is APM Maersk, holding 15 16% of the market. Lack of regulation and corporate governance has been elemental to creating a managerial culture that is not in accordance with cost share, product differentiation, or business regulation/taxation. Proposed solutions abbreviated In order to create a culture that will be more open to consolidation, small companies who have more stake to gain than lose should form mergers in order to prove the validity of mergers. • 7. The Corrupt Of Prohibition In The 1920 s On January 16 of 1920, The 18th amendment went into effect. The 18th amendment restricted the manufacture, transportation, import, export, and sale of alcoholic beverages. Supporters of Prohibition believed that it would help control social problems and economic problems as well. What Prohibition did was the totally opposite, Prohibition became a failure. • 8. The Day Of Year Thou Mayst The Speaker in That Time of Year Thou Mayst in Me Behold We re all going to die. At the end of the game, no matter how sinful or pious, the king and the pawn return to the same box. It is the most self evident of truths, one discovered by all people at some point in their lives and acknowledged by every culture, every religion, and every civilization since the dawn of time. And yet as individuals, the concept of death boggles our minds to the extent that we cannot comprehend it in its essence: nothingness so dimensionless we can t even miss it. Death troubles us so deeply that we lie to ourselves; we convince ourselves of our own immortality either through the idea of eternity in heaven and God, the coming marvels of genetic engineering, our deep legacy to our family or nation, or even just by craving our name into stone, all of which we perceive as eternal. This way of thinking, while arguably necessary for the sake of our own sanity, helps us maintain our delusion immortality. In the rare occasions when we do acknowledge our impermanence, it is often through insipid catchphrases like YOLO. In stark contrast to this idea that there s always tomorrow, Shakespeare s sonnet That Time of Year Thou Mayst in Me Behold addresses the epiphany of human impermanence through the lens of a dying man, likely of old age or poor health, who acknowledges his approaching conclusion and must reconcile this reality with the fact that his lover (perhaps his wife) will long outlive him. San Luis Coastal Unified School District has two high schools, San Luis Obispo High School (SLOHS), operating under a traditional trimester schedule, and Morro Bay High School (MBHS), running on a semester long block schedule. The district claimed that the current schedule at SLOHS was inequitable to all students within the district, as students at SLOHS are given more opportunities to take a variety of courses when compared to MBHS students. The district suggested that SLOHS propose an alternative schedule (not the trimester) or accept the fallback traditional semester schedule for the next schoolyear. Southwest Flight 1248 Some of the witnesses did not realize what was actually happening such as; we thought it was an automobile accident and we looked out the window and we saw the tail section of a Southwest airliner laying across the street (ASN, 2007). Further, witnesses also reported that people were running and ambulances were coming down the street (ASN, 2007). The witness reports for the accident of flight 1248 were not a significant source of the investigation. Findings. The NTSB made 23 findings relative to this accident, discussing crew qualifications, use of reverse thrust, use of automatic brakes, landing conditions, landing surface condition guidance, and Engineering Materials Arresting System (EMAS) (FAA, 2005). Probable Cause The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) determined that the probable cause of the accident was the pilots failure to use available reverse thrust in a timely manner to safely slow or stop the airplane after landing, which resulted in a runway overrun. This failure occurred because the pilots first experience and lack of familiarity with the airplane s autobrake system distracted them from using reverse thrust during the challenging landing (FAA, 2005). Ireland In 1494 In its strenuous efforts to subject Ireland to English Rule, the English government strategized on how to most effectively surrender the Irish people to its supreme governance. One of the most influential if not destructive methods was the implementation of Poynings Law in 1494, which under its terms maintained that all Irish Bills be submitted by the English chief governor in Ireland to the King and Privy Council by way of the English Parliament. Only Bills that were subsequently approved and returned to Ireland under the Great Seal of Englandcould be presented to the Irish parliament. The purpose of this bill followed a number of other direct changes to Ireland that stemmed from King Henry II and King Henry VIII and their momentous wish to rescue Ireland from the decades of neglect England had subjugated the state collectively to, up until the sixteenth century. • 14. Jungles And The Jungle Books Upon studying children s literature, one is likely to notice that throughout various texts, there are a number of common and recurring elements. One theme that is present in many stories is that of jungles and forests (for the purposes of this paper, these will be discussed as if they were one in the same). In Rudyard Kiplings The Jungle Books and Lewis Carroll s Through the Looking Glass, we see both jungles and forests represented in different ways, however it can be argued that they serve similar functions in both texts. In both stories, forests and jungles are treated as liminal spaces, as a sort of limbo between one state of being and another. In The Jungle Books, the jungle that Mowgliand the animals live in is portrayed as the threshold at which the laws of man end and the laws of nature begin, while in Through the Looking Glass, forests are portrayed as obstacles through which one must pass in order to reach a destination. Mowgli fulfils his destiny within the jungle by being raised there, while Alice passes through several forests in order to reach her place as queen on the chess board. Thus, forests and jungles in both texts function not only as liminal spaces, but as transformative agents which mold the protagonist into the person they must be in order to succeed in their story. In general, forests are a very common element of children s literature, even dating back to the stories collected by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. From children being sent out into the ... • 18. The Legal Protections For Disabled People Disability in America Legal protections for disabled people in America are essential because disabled people face overwhelming discrimination, and the legislation helps provides equality in an unfair world. Imagine driving home late at night, falling asleep behind the wheel, and swerving into oncoming traffic. When you wake up in the hospital, you can t use your legs. You might not be disabled today, but what about tomorrow? Some people are born with a disability, and some people become disabled. Some disability rights activists use the term temporarily abled to describe how there isn t a line set in stone between us and them . Disabled people face discrimination because they are dehumanized and seen as lesser than abled people. As a result, politically correct terms used to describe disabled people change frequently, an example of the euphemism treadmill . Ableism is when disabled people are seen as broken and able people are seen as superior, which results in words used to describe disability becoming insults. When a child calls someone stupid, or retarded, or dumb, or an idiot, or lame, or moronic, they aren t thinking about how the words they are using oppress disabled people by turning who they are into an insult. Our society raises children to believe that some people are better than others, an example of the entrenched discrimination disabled people face. Strict laws and policies were imposed to ensure that the nation would continue to evolve and change. This day marked the beginning of the infamous Reign of Terror. The spark that set off the Reign of Terror can be attributed to the king s attempted escape from France in 1791 (Document 6). It is impossible for people of the modern world to comprehend exactly what caused this mayhem simply because no one lived during that period. Regardless, the event left the nation in a state of shock and uncertainty. The National Convention was forced to make the difficult decision to place all of its power into an entirely new political branch, knowing that something different was needed to save France. Before he was chosen to run the Committee of Public Safety, Robespierre was revered for his courage and sheer determination. He ridiculed the notion that a monarchy could last and instead pushed for democratic reforms (Document 2). Robespierre spoke to the people of France with an air of confidence that quickly won them over. His morals were fundamentally based on the ideals of early enlightenment thinker Jean Jacques Rousseau. Both men asserted that man is good by nature but poisoned by society. Robespierre also believed that all men deserve to be treated as equals in the eyes of the law (Document 3). The central cause of the French Revolution was the nation s lack of a strong military in the face of civil war and foreign invasion. Rebuilding the military was arguably the most significant advancement that occurred during the Reign of Terror. Robespierre created a law called the Law of Universal Conscription in an effort to propel the French military to a reasonable state. This law mandated all men between the ages of 18 and 40 to join the army. Additionally, women were called into service to make uniforms. He is lost in a dark forest, which symbolizes not only Dante s loss of morality, but all of humanity s sins on Earth. The Dark Wood of Error is a foreshadowing of what the afterlife would be like for Dante without God and without any meaning. Dante appears to be suffering through a mid life crisis as he flirts with the idea of death, saying, so bitter death is hardly more severe (1.7). Dante has lost his dignity and moral direction following his exile from Florence. Dante must travel through Helland witness the worst crimes ever committed by humans. By traveling through the depths of Satan s world, Dante is given an opportunity to reconnect with Christianity. Many people claim that Dante journeys through Hell for revenge, but in fact he is hoping to reset his own moral compass and find God. As Dante explores the Second Circle of Hell, he is horrified by the punishments that the sinners must suffer through. When he hears the story of Francesca and Paolo s lustful actions, Dante relates deeply to their stuggles because he reflects on his own sins and believes he may be cast to a similar fate in the afterlife. Dante reacts to the story when he says, I fainted, as if I had met my death. / And then I fell as a dead body falls (5.142 143). Dante faints from compassion for the two sinners pitiful story. Dante struggles to grasp the wrongdoing these people have participated in to be placed in Hell because he continues to search for the noble qualities in everyone. On the one hand, Dante believes God s punishment for the lustful sinners, relentless winds and storms, is unethical. On the other hand, this belief is naive because it is known that all of God s punishments are just. The lustful are condemned to an eternity in Hell because they did not care about their actions on Earth, so the raging storm that torments them is not concerned with what is in its path. Is it because of low self esteem, envy, fear of rejection/feeling threatened or part of our culture or religion. Whatever the reasons Young Goodman Brown and A Good Man Is Hard to Find illustrates the dangers of being judgmental. Brown see his self as a good person prior to entering the forest, and the grandmother from A Good Man Is Hard to Find see herself as an upstanding southern woman until the end shows her different. Let s explore Young Goodman Brownto see if there is a lesson to be learned about the dangers of being judgmental. Brown is a young man living in the seventeen centuries and in Salem a town known as the capital of witchcraft. Hawthorne references three dark events from the Puritans history: the Salem Witch Trials of 1692, the Puritan intolerance of the Quakers, and King Philip s War. During the Salem Witch Trials, one of the most nightmarish episodes in Puritan history, the villagers of Salem killed twenty five innocent people who were accused of being witches. • 30. Damnation of a Canyon The Damnation of a Canyon By Edward Abbey Not many people know of the used to be 150 mile excursion that the Glen Canyon had to offer. Not many people know how to sail a raft down a river for a week. Not many people know how to interact with nature and the animals that come with it. We seem to come from a world that is dependent on time and consumed in money. Edward Abbey is what you would call an extreme environmentalist. He talks about how it was an environmental disaster to place a dam in which to create Lake Powell, a reservoir formed on the border of Utah and Arizona. He is one of the few that have actually seen the way Glen Canyon was before they changed it into a reservoir. Today, that lake is used by over a million ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He seems to argue the В‘wheelchair ethos of the wealthy, upper middle class American slob . Well, excuse the people who were born paralyzed from the waist down, and would like to experience the forces nature in its natural state of beauty and grace. He seems to generalize the typical population of people who visit Lake Powell on an unscientific basis, upper middle class American slobs. So does that mean that a lower class family doesn t have the money to do such recreational activity? And that we are slobs because we like to view nature in its own environment? One last point in which should be heard is that, Edward Abbey states that now that the river is closed up people cannot get a raft, spend about forty dollars, give up 7 10 days, and rely only on the goodness of fresh catfish just to float down a river. In today s society people don t have time. We would rather spend the hundreds of dollars to get a nice speedboat, buy real food, and only take maybe the weekend to enjoy the great outdoors. We enjoy the freshness of a shower everyday, going to the bathroom with flushable device, eating food with the right bit of garlic taste, in other words the comfort of home. Even if they did take down the dam and offer such rafting trips, do you honestly think a person could leave their cell phone at home? In conclusion, I do think that Edward Abbey made a great ... People are often uncomfortable with the very idea of it, and some are even ignorant of its function. The practices and views resulting from these widespread beliefs can be harmful to women s mental and physical health, as well as their livelihood and relationships with others. When impregnation does not occur, the endometrium, along with blood and vaginal discharge, leaves the uterus through the vagina, and the cycle repeats itself (Hyde DeLamater, 2014). Nothing of this process indicates any toxicity in women, or any effect on them outside of the physical. It is a monthly biological cycle that occurs in fertile women to prepare for the possibility of conception, and any negative view towards it or the women experiencing it has its source in ignorance, fear, or in the words of books written thousands of years before anyone even had an inkling of how menstruation works. History Without knowing the reason why menstruation occurs, it is a scary idea; a woman, uninjured, begins to bleed for days from the area of childbirth and intercourse every month. It would be easy to relate this occurrence, to something mystical and powerful. The vagina itself has been a thing of mystery, with some cultures considering it to be a channel to the beyond; babies are born through it, and without knowledge of how they develop, some believed that newborns simply came from another plane of existence (Magli, 2009, p. 91). The belief that a woman s body holds a portal to some other world makes it frightening and possibly dangerous, and many traditions have manifested in an attempt to control this supposed power, such as infibulation (cutting the labia so when the tissue heals, it creates a barrier over the vaginal opening) and separation of women ... From the rhythmic qualities, to the symbolism, no opinion is wrong. In the 18th century a differently style of poetry came about known as Romanticism, or the Romantic Era. Romanticism focuses on several characteristics imagination, emotion, nature, personal life, symbolism, and individualism. Kubla Khan by Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Tintern Abbey both highlight these ideas as well as Ralph Waldo Emerson. Similar to Kubla Khan , Wordsworth starts his poem off by saying Five years have past; fiver summers, with the length of five long winters! . This to me is important, because it shows how so much time has passed, but yet for him nothing has changed. Wordsworth then questions on whether or not he should leave his secluded area. Emerson at this point would then take this and say how the figurative use of Wordsworth to state how its first the fact; second its impression, or what I thin of it . Emerson would use the literal impression of 5 years going by, followed by the descriptive part of time going by. The day is come when I again repose , also shows the impression of how much time has passed by. The character that Wordsworth is painting, shows us that he has been secluded for so long that he does not necessarily know how to participate in life, or act around other people. With some uncertain notice, as might seem. Of vagrant dwellers in the houseless woods, Or of some Hermit s cave, where by his fire The Hermit sits alone. • 34. The Use Of Rggt Inhibitors Doesn t Exhibit Any Toxicity... The use of RGGT inhibitors doesn t exhibit any toxicity in mouse models (Taylor et al., 2011). This is supported by comparison to gunmetal mice that harbour a RGGT mutation leading to 80% reduction of RGGT function. There are mild dysfunctional phenotypes such as hypopigmentation and altered platelet synthesis. This suggests that a decreased RGGT activity, such that Rab proteins would be hypoprenylated, would not be lethal if targeted (Recchi and Seabra, 2012). The decrease in RGGT activity is only specific to certain tissues, leading to the idea that this mutation does not affect all Rabs equally (Hume, et al. 2001). NE10790 is a phosphonocarboxylate analogue of the more potent bisphosphonate risedronate (BP RIS), and contains a carboxylate group instead of a phosphonate group. NE10790 is a specific inhibitor of RGGT, whereas BPs are non specific inhibitors of Rab prenylation. They act on farnesyl diphosphate synthase to inhibit prenylation of a variety of proteins such as Rho and Ras, seen in Figure 9 (Gong, Altman and Klein, 2011). The use of BPs in clinical trials has been successful in decreasing mortality from lytic bone disease in multiple myeloma. There is also evidence of anti tumour effects, such as apoptosis and arresting the cell cycle, as well as in other tumour cell types associated with bone. Gender inequality is particularly well known and everyone is familiar with the concept of military rank; benefits increase as rank increases. Lower ranking military service personnel receive smaller, lower quality base houses, are expected to work longer hours, receive less BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) regardless of family size, and may not receive all of the support services entitled to them. How does the rank of an enlisted member impact his or her family? Does inequality within the ranks have an affect on morale and/or quality of life? Is rank inequality acceptable to military families? Literature Review Inequality in the Military: An Examination of Promotion Time for Black and White Enlisted Men (Butler 1976) asserts that black enlisted men are subject to racism during promotion time. When all things are equal between a black and white military member, black personnel take longer to move up in rank. Thus, black military personnel are subject to inequality. Sometimes for this to happen, it involves adoption. Whether someone wants to start a family with it, or if they want to expand their family. No matter what the initial reason is adoptionis everywhere and involves many people. Most people don t go through life and say that they don t know anybody who is adopted. Many people are related to, or know at least one person, that was adopted. So all countries should let people continue saying that by letting them adopt whether they are from a foreign country or not. It is estimated that there are 2 billion kids in the world. Of those 2 billion, 15 million are living without parents. Millions more, not counting the 2 billion, have been abandoned by their parent or guardian forcing them to fend for themselves (SIRS, International Adoption Babies without Borders, Para 1). • 39. Types Of Alternate Dispute Resolutions A traditional judicial process such as litigation is a settlement of an agreement between the parties involved in a dispute that is heard and decided by the judge and a jury in court. Due to the rising costs of litigation and time delays, businesspersons are turning to alternate dispute resolutions as a way to come to an agreement. Many states and corporations have been experimenting with ADR programs and have found it to be a great alternate. Three types of alternate dispute resolutions are negotiation, mediation, and arbitration. Roger LeRoy Miller, author of Business Law Today stated that, Today, more than 90 percent of cases are settled before trial through some form of ADR (84). Each process is used differently amongst parties and each has its own benefits. Alternate dispute resolutions tend to have lower costs and the process is much shorter. The use of alternate dispute resolutions is growing at a fast rate because many businesses and corporations find it to be an easier way to come to a settlement. Although alternate dispute resolutions have been recognized for their advantages its still important not to overlook the disadvantages of each. Generally, the simplest form of alternate dispute resolution is negotiation. Negotiation allows the parties to meet informally with or without their attorney s present to settle their dispute. This process does not require a neutral third party to be at the meeting because the parties reach a resolution on their own terms. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Civil Rights Movement Of North Carolina Essay By the summer of 1964, David Cunningham writes in Klansville, U.S.A., the Carolina Klan established a demanding schedule of nightly rallies across the state, where they enlisted thousands of dues paying members. More than that, at its mid 1960s peak the Klan s presence in North Carolina eclipsed klan membership in all other southern states combined.
