people would argue that late artist Jackson Pollock s work would not go under this category. But
Pollock s paintings were not random splats and splashes, but carefully planned and expertly
executed works of art.
In order to understand Pollock s work, it s important that you know a little about him. Jackson
Pollock was born in Wyoming in 1912. His family moved around the southwest before settling in
Los Angeles. At age 18 he dropped out of high school and moved to New York, where he struggled
for more than a decade to make it as an artist.

From 1938 to 1942 Pollock worked for the Federal Art Project, and by the mid 1940 s he was
painting in a completely abstract manner (Moore).
In 1944 Jackson met and married Lee Krasner, also an abstract impressionist of great influence in
the 20th century. In 1947 Pollock abruptly started working in what he is now famous for, his drip
and splash method. He continued painting throughout the early 1950 s (Landau 22).
Jackson was most well known for his drip paintings, which were created in a very unheard of and
unusual way. He attached his canvases to the floor, dancing around them and attacking them from
all four sides. He would use almost anything but a paintbrush to apply the paint to the canvas.
Pollock most often stood over the work slinging paint with sticks, trowels, or knives. This would
later earn him the name, Jack the Dripper (Lehrer). He would also embed things onto his painting
surface, such as sand, broken glass, nails, pebbles, string, and other foreign matter. This gave it
texture and depth. He had an exceptional interest in sand paintings, as he had studied about the
Southwest Indians that made sand paintings as a ritual to heal an unhealthy or diseased person.
