The Owner Of Essence Yoga
I choose to interview the owner of Essence Yoga, Deb Manera Cunha. I have known Deb for a
couple of years but knew very little about the successful yoga studio she owns. I sat down with Deb
on July 21st and was truly inspired about by her story and business sense. The Venture. Essence
Yoga is a studio offering Yoga and meditation 7 days a week. They are a community based studio
located in Cranston s Pawtuxet Village. They offer safe instruction to men and women of all ages,
shapes and sizes. Part of their mission is encouraging clients to find a healthy lifestyle and allow
the practice of yoga help balance out the day to day grind. Deb worked in the Yoga field for 5 years
before deciding to go into business on her own. Yoga was more of a part time job for her as her
children were very young, but after her Dad s passing in 2011, she took a short break from working
to refocus on her family. During that break she began debating going out on her own, opening her
own yoga studio, instead of returning to work for someone else. Deb was really close to her dad
and took his suggestions to heart. Her dad had a saying he always followed in his life, take risks in
life, live without regret, go all in . Deb decided that was exactly what she was going to do and
Essence Yoga opened its doors in February of 2012. Four years later, Deb now has seven
employees working for her. Struggles and Challenges. During the early survival period, Deb was
teaching classes seven days a week

Soft Determinism Is Compatible
Compatibilism is the philosophical belief that determinism is compatible with human freedom. To
define determinism as a metaphysical thesis that the facts and occurrences of the past, following the
laws of nature and physics will give to only one possible future outcome in that moment.
Compatibilism breaks down into several versions for instance, soft determinismor self
determination, classical, contemporary, and opposing philosophical thoughts such as
incompatibilism, liberalism and hard determinism. Soft determinism states that humans are
determined and still free, when an individual acts freely by being the cause of their own actions.
What an individual wants is determined by external events such as genetics, culture or upbringing

The first is surface freedom which is when an individual has the power to make their own choices.
The second kind is deeper freedom, which is the ability of an individual to form their own desires.
Free will can manipulated by many external factors including advertisements and peer pressure.
Free will in relation to compatibilism is the unique ability of an individual to exercise control
over their choices in a manner necessary for moral responsibility. A common misconception is
because free will is compatible with all events being caused means free means caused. Free does
not mean caused, in any aspect. The problem of free will and compatibilism is that will is
determined by prior events in the casual chain, which causes and determines the actions of those
involved. It has been suggested that chance and random occurrences is an explanation for freedom,
however if something was truly random then it would break the casual chain. It could then be
argued that because of chance outcomes from an individuals action that they could not be morally
responsible. It is common for philosophers to counter this argument by stating that chance is an
illusion, Albert Einstein once stated God does not play dice implying that everything has a cause
even if we have not figured it out

The Berlin Blockade Is The First Major International...
The Berlin Blockade is said to be the first major international crises of the Cold War. The basis of
this blockade was to cut of Western Allies railway, road, and canal access to the eastern side of the
city. The Soviets proposed an offer to the west, in which they would drop the blockade, if newly
introduced Deutschmark currency was withdrawn from West Berlin. But seeing as though if they
did agree, the German society would only crumble even further, so the westerners rejected the
offer. The idea of the an airlift came to mind of the western allies, as they wanted aid Berlin
citizens and abolish the Soviet authority. This idea was inspired by the World War II American
airlift from India, over the Himalayas, to China The Hump , to resupply the Chinese war effort.
Planning and investigating were soon done by the three nations in an attempt to figure out and
carry out a large scale solution.
On November 30th, 1945, it was announced that there would be 23 mile wide air corridors
providing passage to Berlin. Since the use of unarmed aircraft would be the transport method, the
Soviets could not accuse that the cargo aircraft were a military threat, like if they were tanks or
trucks. Being faced with non lethal aircraft refusing to turn around, the only way to keep the
blockade impassable would be to shoot them down. The Soviets were forcibly put in a position of
either shooting down unarmed humanitarian aircraft, which in turn would break their own
agreements, or back down

MONTGOMERY GI BILLIN
The Montgomery GI Bill had to be proclaimed as one of the greatest important pieces of
legislation ever enacted by our government, the GI Bill impacted the U.S. socially, and
economically. But this bill almost didn t even pass.
They called it the Service Member Readjustment Act of 1944 at that time it was more commonly
known as the GI Bill of Rights it was delayed in Congress, where members of the Senate and the
House argued over specifications over this controversial bill. Some members of the House and
Senate rejected the thought of paying Veterans twenty dollars a week in unemployment, they
thought it would give Veterans a reason not to look for... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From 1944 to 1952 the VA supported almost 2.4 million home loans for WWII Veterans. Many
Vets used the education and home loan benefits, very few Vets participated in one of the bill s
most debated obligations the unemployment pay. No more than 20 percent of funds set aside for
Veterans were ever used.
Former Mississippi Congressman Gillespie V. Montgomery ended up revamped the bill in 1984.
The GI Bill will now be known as the Montgomery GI Bill , ensuring that the remainder of the
original GI Bill would live on, as VA home loan guarantee and education programs continue to work
for the Soldiers, Sailors. Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guard.
The Montgomery GI Bill was looked at once again in 2008 and was then updated. The new GI
Bill know allows Veterans who served on or after September 11th 2001 which included improved
benefits for education, benefits that cover more educational expenses, provide a monthly housing
stipend, book allowance, but the biggest change was the ability of the Veteran to transfer all or

ISLAM
REL1006S: COURSE ESSAY
Discuss how Islam is a quest to be faithful to the transcendent, both directly and through social
engagement
Islam is a religion based on the belief in one God, His messenger and the four other pillars. These
five pillars are central to Muslims, followers of Islam and mould their beings and are part of their
everyday lives. This essay will look at the abovementioned pillars, what they are and how they form
part of the quest to be faithful to the transcendent. Mention will also be made to how Islam plays out
in everyday life, thus how this quest is and can be done both directly and through social
engagement.
Firstly, we need to establish who or what the Transcendent is. I would like to describe the... Show

This again, makes reference to the remembrance of those who are not as fortunate, specifically,
fellow Muslim brothers and sisters and the importance of togetherness in order to once again, please
Allah, following in the Prophet s footsteps.
The fifth and last pillar of Islam is the Hajj. The Hajj refers to the holy pilgrimage to Makkah,
acts done at and around the Ka bah, the house of God and also other precise and detailed series
of rituals as prescribed. The gathering of all pilgrims on the plains of Arafat, men dressed in
nothing but two cloths and women in plain white thobes (form of Islamic dress), is the highlight
and most important part of the journey for pilgrims. Here one s previous sins are forgiven and
lots and lots of supplication are made to God (Online Source Al Islam.org). The white attire that
is prescribed is so that no one Muslim can be socially distinguished from the other. This is the
one place where everyone is equal and no judgement can be made. The five pillars that are central
to Islam make it evident that through these various ways, Muslims are governing their lives
correctly, according to Allah, following the way of His messenger and as a result, brought closer
to Him on a spiritual level. Allah is never objectified and one cannot then be physically closer to
Him.
There are also other acts of worship that can be done in order to become closer to

The Analytical Effectiveness Of The Assessment
As I reflect about the various assessments I utilized for my project, I have mixed feelings about
the evaluative effectiveness of the assessments. When I began examine Jen s formal
assessments results (such as, Running Records, BY and EY Benchmarks, Sound Identification
/Sigh Word Inventory forms), I believed the assessments would accurately demonstrate a
positive progress Jen had made during the course of the year. What I discovered was both an
intended and unintended consequence of assessment use. On the one hand, I found the
assessments to be useful tools to gauge student literacy abilities. On the other hand, I believe
that the focus on assessment led to the teacher developing a deficit mindset with Jen. Often
times Jen s teacher narrowly would focus on Jen s inability to be at grade level or lack of drastic
improvement. In fact, the only thought Jen s teacher had was on the fact that Jen did not meet
the expected reading level for the end of the year for K 2. I believe if teachers rely too much on
assessment scores limits their ability to understand external factors or barriers that influence a
child s literacy. McKenna and Picard (2007) discuss the importance for teachers to view students
word miscue analysis beyond the checks on paper and formulas. McKenna and Picard caution
teachers to avoid focusing on the assessment scores because they believe children reading
strategies to decode words or understand a word meaning does not always mean reading proficiency.

The Strategic Board Game Diplomacy
The strategic board game Diplomacy focuses on wars, but more importantly the act of
negotiating. The players are responsible for forming strategies by both developing and breaking
alliances with their competitors. The game is set in Europe during World War I with most teams
beginning with similar resources. Each player competes as an either Austria Hungary, Turkey,
Italy, England, France, Russia, or Germany. With at least three home center game pieces on the
board, there are strategic movements in order to control one of the eighteen supply centers. This
involves phases of negotiation prior to movement of game piece. There is no factor of luck. The
main variable in the game is each team s ability to convince the others to do what they want. The
core game strategy is negotiation.
In the game and actual life all are envious of England because of its location and resources as well
as its well developed army. Russia Germany and France are potential threats. Realizing that England
has to prevent Germany from joining with France due how is the game diplomacy unrealistic to
their potential. I believe that many of the alliances that occurred during World War Idid not actually
happen in our game of Diplomacy. There several shocking twists and turns. In our game, Italy and
Russia stayed rather benign and non engaging. They moved some pieces out of their countries;
however, they primarily just protected their home country. Germany, similar to a real life map, is

How First Person Narration Affects The Overall Story
There are lots of better writer and novelist in the world who have given so many books and
novels for reading, I have read some of them and some are discussed with everyone. There are
famous writers like A. A. Milne, Ernest Hemingway, Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, J K Rowling,
Lewis Carroll and the list does not end here. They have given books for fiction, Children s

Analysis Of The Book Youth And Ghost By Adam...
The historians who begin the 20th century with the First World War do so because of the great
change in thinking brought about during and after the fighting: people became less friendly
toward colonialism; people s roles in their societies were often not the same after the war, most
of all women, and where other methods failed to, a new kind of nationalism could perhaps help
them to rebuild their identities as they rebuilt their countries. Various sources about the time can
be used to examine it from different angles and draw different conclusions about it: Vera Brittain
s Testament of Youth, for example, is a primary source and a memoir, assembled from her own
diaries and letters sent from around the turn of the century, and has the unique flavor of being a
woman s perspective during the war. King Leopold s Ghost by Adam Hochschild is a secondary
source and a collection of stories all looking at the same subject colonialism in Africa, the Congo
in particular and it provides multiple views through different eyes. The chapter On Humanity in
Dark Times: Thoughts about Lessing from Hannah Arendt s book Men in Dark Times is also a
secondary source, as the book is a collection of her own essays and thus likely has notes of
personal reflection as Brittain s memoir would while bringing in the facts and somewhat
journalistic observation of King Leopold s Ghost. Ernest Hemingway s The Sun Also Rises, while
a work of fiction, is a novel that focuses on characters dealing with the

First Transcontinental Railroad Essay
The First Transcontinental Railroad was an extremely exciting topic to learn about and it was
very interesting, which is why I chose it as my History Day topic. I chose to portray my project
as an exhibit since I decided that it was only appropriate to show these series of events in a more
visual, direct way. There were other ways I could have created my final project, such as a
documentary, skit, or website; however, I decided that sketching a train and making physical 3D
artifacts would be more visually appealing. The research part of this project was done through
Cornell notes, which were tedious at first, but I realized that it helped a lot when I actually put my
project together. I used a variety of sources, mostly from credible websites.... Show more content on

It was time to put all of the research I had done in the form of an exhibit. Before doing the
exhibit, I made a layout of what was most probably going to go on my final poster. Even though I
had the layout, I still encountered some problems. I would have had run into so many more
problems if I hadn t done the layout, so I am glad that I did it. Right before putting my project
together, I quickly went to the store to get the materials like the poster board, glue, clay for the
artifacts, etc. Now that I had all the materials, I was finally set to complete the enormous project.
One of the problems I encountered was that I didn t have enough room on my poster board for
everything that I needed. Because of this, I decided to reprint some of the items, so that I could
fit everything. Another problem I ran into was that I could not fit my title on one page, so I
decided to print it on multiple pages and just glue them together. After I was finished with
cutting and pasting, I realized that I did pretty well. I also realized that after I finished my
project that I did not have to color the sketch of a train that I drew because most of my pictures
were black and white anyway. After finishing my poster board, I had to create my 3D artifacts. I
decided to make a replica of the locomotive part of the Transcontinental Railroad out of cardstock, a
small part of the railroad tracks out of clay, and a

The Effects Of Hip Hop Music On Adolescents
Effects of Hip Hop Music on Adolescents Music is a significant part of the lives of most people
all over the world. In the United States, people listen to more than 25 hours each week [1]. Hip
hop makes up a large percentage of adolescent music genre preference. It goes without saying
that this overwhelming presence of music in the lives of so many people will have a
psychological effect on American culture and our way of life. But how exactly is Hip Hop
affecting us psychologically and culturally? The effects of music videos on adolescences have
been the subject of controversy for decades. The common reason for the concern has been
appropriately summed by Arnett (a Research Professor of Psychology at Clark University in
Worcester, Massachusetts), who explained, women are used as props for the illusive life the
music video is portraying the artist to have. The concern that hip hop culture, as seen in music
videos, has become heavily influential on young people s views of sexuality. The concern about
mainstream hip hop music and music videos sexualizing women, in particular, is so omnipresent,
many can even be referenced as rape culture by embedded sexual violence in the lyrics being
disguised as pleasurable elements of hip hop. The Kaiser Family Foundation in the year 2001
reported that teenagers rank entertainment media as the main source for information about sexuality
and sexual health [3]. Descriptive language and sexual imagery in music videos directly affect

Zeus In Frankenstein
As the leader of Mount Olympus, the gods, and the universe, Zeus was often looked up to as the
shining example excellence in Greek society. According to the people s beliefs, Zeus was a partial
reason for their creation, as he gave the titan, Prometheus, the task of creating man. Prometheus
created man out of clay, yet the people looked up to Zeusfor motivation and inspiration. However,
Zeus was not always a role model, committing adultery against his wife, Hera, and letting his anger
get the best of him in cases of lashing out against the people of Earth and the other gods. However,
for the most part, the humans that he was responsible for acted in a far more compassionate and

This can be seen when he says, Oh, Frankenstein! Generous and self devoted being! What does it
avail that I now ask thee to pardon me? I who irretrievably destroyed thee by destroying all thou
lovest. Alas! He is cold, he cannot answer me (Shelley, 221). In the following pages, however,
the monster admits to having shown a lack of compassion during the murders of Henry Clerval
and Victor s wife, Elizabeth. Even though the monster seems to be mindlessly killing people
close to Victor, one can argue that his rampage was based on humanity. Before the murders, the
creature simply seeks a female companion from his creator, to be able to, interchange of those
sympathies necessary for [its] being (Shelley, 147). While Victor did initially comply, he throws
the idea out the window, and as a result, the monster experiences true heartbreak. This heartbreak
leads the monster to commit the crimes that it did, inflicting a fairly equal amount of pain upon
Frankenstein compared to the suffering inflicted on the monster. For example, Victor promotes the
suffering by taking away the companion and creating the creature in a wretched form.
Furthermore, the monster is extremely young, so like a child crying over a bump on a table,
Frankenstein s creation is overreacting to a situation that he has never encountered before. He
solely acts out of a long for humanity and equality in the world he was forced into. This is seen on
page 222, when Victor s monster says to Robert Walton, he sought his own enjoyment in feelings
and passions form the indulgence of which I was forever barred, then impotent envy and bitter
indignation filled me with an insatiable thirst for vengeance (Shelley,

Ralph Waldo Emerson Analysis
Ralph Waldo Emerson gave a speech to the men of the Phi Beta Kappa Society at Cambridge
University entitled The American Scholar in 1837. The speech focused on the main ideas of
transcendentalism as well as how different factors in society affect man s ability to realize that
they are their own individuals. Harold Bloom, a well known literary critic who evaluated topics
such as the bible and Shakespeare, believed that Emerson s writing was the template for all future
authors. Bloom believed that adversity allows people to have a deeper understanding of the world.
However, Emerson focused on the loss of knowledge in the society due to the misunderstanding of
younger generations in his time period while Bloom mainly focused on how Emerson s views on
individualism and transcendentalism affected all writing whether admitted or not. Harold Bloom
was correct in his critique, Out of Panic, Self Reliance published in 2008, when he confirmed
Ralph Waldo Emersons view point in his speech The American Scholar (1837) stating that
overcoming adversity is an essential part to gaining wisdom and forming self reliance by
comparing it to current political events in order to show once again that Ralph Waldo Emerson
was very influential to not only authors but to the overall evolution of man s thoughts. It can be
inferred from Emerson that the adversity that he so deeply describes throughout his speech could
be man s eternal struggle to discover his own self reliance and experience real world connections
instead of just reading about them and not fully understanding or even comprehending the
meaning of what is being read. Ralph Waldo Emerson separates society into two groups known as
Man Thinking ( Emerson 2) who has allowed himself to be open to new ways of life and
understanding and Mere thinkers (Emerson 2) who simply follow the trends and patterns society
without any thought of their own. He believes the Mere thinkers are inevitable lost in adversity and
do not fully understand transcendentalist ideas. Nevertheless, it will never be too late to find self
reliance and contribute an opinion to the world thus diversifying society.
When people finally rise above adversity they recognize the god within themselves

Social Issues
Business Brief The problem of state presence in socio economic life has always been and will be
the subject of heated discussions among economists, sociologists and political scientists. This issue
is not only an ideological one, but also of significant importance for the state functioning. It is
undisputable that the implementation of particular tasks by the state turns out indispensable for the
functioning of society, however, in terms of market existence the underlying advantages, to be
discussed below, are much less favorable. The classification of social regulations In the course of

licenses, patents. State intervention at private markets generates costs, unpredictable consequences
and is often more damaging than purposeful. The state frequently builds obstacles preventing
economic growth. In many cases state regulations raise company functioning costs, slow down
decision making processes and limit access to resources necessary for the production of goods and
the provision of services. Finally, it is the consumer who suffers unfavorable effects of such
regulations. One of the negative side effects, in terms of the state interference in the social sphere,
are administration costs covered by the state budget and spent on running and supporting federal
agencies. Another negative factor takes the form of bureaucratic inclinations presented by clerks in
creating regulations the objective of which is often lost among inadequate requirements, the maze
of rules difficult to overcome for consumers and entrepreneurs in order to meet due requirements.
Additionally, entrepreneurs themselves are trying to extend the scope of regulations by seeking
ways to use them to their own advantage. The costs to be covered by entrepreneurs refer to the
necessary documentation, accounting and legal advice, employing consultants and experts, the
purchase of necessary equipment, but also the cost of waiting time for indispensable

Essay on The Effects Of Britan On The Colonies During...
Between the settlement of Jamestown in 1607 and the Treaty of Paris in 1763, the most important
change that occurred in the colonies was the emergence of a society quite different from that in
England. Changes in religion, economics, politics, and social structure illustrate this
Americanization of the transplanted Europeans.
By 1763 although some colonies still maintained established churches, other colonies had
accomplished a virtual revolution for religious toleration and separation of church and state. The
British, after many years of religious revolution had established the Anglican Church. In which the
king of England was the head of this church. This resulted in almost no ... Show more content on

The northern colonies developed many trade triangles. One such triangle would be a northern
captain setting out from New England with rum. This ship would then sail to the west coast of
Africa and trade the rum for slaves. The captain would of course reek a handsome profit and with
those slaves he would then take them to the West Indies to trade them for molasses. He then take
the molasses and what was left of the slaves and sell them back in the colonies. This left the
Northern colonies much richer than the southern colonies. The main reason for this difference is
that Britain had always thought that the amount of money in the treasury is how powerful you
were. The Americans thought that the more money you make the better off you were. It generally
hinged on how much needed resources you wanted to own. The Americans saw past that and
expanded heavily on trade. Therefore they could make more money.
Building on English foundations of political liberty, the colonist extend the concepts of liberty and
self government far beyond those envisioned in the mother country. Although Britain had a
representative government they had a monarchy, sort of. Still even though they had a representative
government the members of parliament were not directly chosen by the people. In Virginia, in
specific Jamestown, the House of Burgesses said that representatives were to be chosen by land
owning people. Another good idea from the colonies was the

right. Wrong. While Hakeem Olajuwon was one the most dominating centers that the NBA has ever
seen, the defense usually didn t let him get easy buckets inside the paint. Or at least try not too. The
offense that coach Tomjanovich used during the Houston Rocketsback to back championships
relied heavily on Hakeem s post skills and the ability of their outside shooters to knock down

This takes the defending post player away from the hoop and allows the offense team post
player to go 1 on 1 with the defender from the free throw line area. This opens up the inside
underneath for back cutters and dribble penetration from the wings and corners. The high post
player can also be used as a screener for the perimeter players. This can cause a big time
mismatch when the defense decides to start switching the screens. The post player will have a
smaller player on him that he can easier post up on or one of the perimeter players will have the
post defender on them and should easily take them of the dribble for a bucket. This set can also
be used against teams that like to full front the post player. The post player should move up to
the high post area. If they are still fronted by the defender they should first seal the defender and
then cut to the basket for an over the top lob pass. For a post player that likes to stay down low a
team might like to consider using the 4 Low set. This requires the post player to move from low
block to low block, or from short corner to short corner. It is also used against a defense that has
a big, strong inside post defender or shot blocker that the post player can t beat 1 on 1. This set

The Greek story mentions how the first race of man were exceedingly wicked, thus howling the
archetype of man in transgression. Zeus sent a flood to destroy the men of the Bronze Age,

men was destroyed, Deucalion and his family survived due to his prudence and piety. He
exhibited the archetype of a favored family. Additionally, Deucalion loaded his wives and all
children and all animals onto a great ark. This one act included the archetypes of an ark being

Taking a Look at Capital Punishment
William Furman murdered William Micke on August 11, 1967 in Savannah, Georgia. Furman
was unemployed, and only had a sixth grade education. William Furman became depressed, and
started to commit theft for food and money. Furman was caught stealing several times, but was
only given a light sentence. At 2 a.m. on August 11, William Furman broke into the house of
William Micke, while Micke and his five children were sleeping. William Micke heard a noise and
went downstairs to see where the noise was coming from. He spotted Furman, and Furman ran for
the back door. William Furman tripped over an exposed wire and the gun in Furman s hand went
off. The bullet hit William Ficke, killing him instantly. The Furman v. Georgia
case started in the
district court and then moved up to the appellate court. Furman was sentenced to death by the
appellate court after a one day trial. He made the argument that his eighth and fourteenth
amendment rights were being violated. The case moved up to the Supreme Court of the United
States. In the trial, Furman had four main arguments: most western nations had abolished capital
punishmentbecause it was an unsuccessful way to deter crime; juries only handed out about 100
death penalties each year, and only about 50 prisoners were sentenced to death so capital
punishment was not being issued objectively; national prison records stated that executions almost
always involved black prisoners; and the only reason why capital punishment had

Description Of My Birthday
What is that one day we wait for all year? Well of course, our birthday. We all wait for that special
day that is our birthday. Our birthday is that one special day that lets us know we are getting
older. We get older each year we reach our birthday, but have we wondered what happened the day
of our birth? I have also wondered what happened on November 30,2000.
The number one thing i know that happened on November 30 is that I was it was my birth day. I
was born on November 30 of the year 2000. That day seemed to be a very sunny afternoon. That
day my parents decided to name me Breanna. They name Breanna means noble strong and
virtuous; the name is the feminine version of the name Brian. The year 2000 was a special year
because it was the mathematical year and also because it was the international year for the
culture of peace. Christmas is also an important time of the year and that is also another event
most people wait forward to every year. In this year christmas wasn t to good for the people in
china because of a christmas party that turned deadly. The party was at an unlicensed disco, and it
caught on fire and ended up killing more than 300 people
I share my birthday with many people but what excites me the most is the to find famous people
that were born the same day as I was. Some famous people I share my birthday is Mark Twain, Sir
winston Churchill, Shirley Chisholm, John McCrae and Ben Stiller. Mark twain was a famous
american writer and was born on November 30, 1835. Sir winston Churchill was a British
statesman who served as a prime minister in the UK. Shirley Chisholm was the first american
black congresswoman and presidential candidate John McCrae was a war world 1 soldier who
wrote the memorial poem named In Flanders Fields that is very well known today, and Ben Stiller
is a famous actor and filmmaker. Some of this famous people have been very important to history
and that s why i m honored to share my birthday with them.
One first fact that I have found near my birthday is that on November 29,2000 there was an oil
spill 26 miles of the mississippi river. The spill affected many areas of the around the mississippi
river. No injuries were reported, but there was some wildlife animals

Mother In A Refugee Camp And Prayer Before Death
Human suffering is a poignant part of life and takes many forms. Explore this idea, referring to
three poems in detail and to at least three other poems drawn from your wider reading. Human
suffering is feeling pain, distress or hardship in life. The three poems chosen all share the
definition of human suffering. While reading the poems War Photographer, Mother in a Refugee
Camp and Prayer Before birth it clearly shows how the horrors of war are the most magnified of
human suffering. Each poem is reflecting a form of suffering that was created due to the violence
of war. Carol Ann Duffy reflects the life of a war photographer developing his pictures, showing
the pain he faces from looking back at the photos. A Mother in a Refugee Camp was... Show more

No Madonna and child could touch her tenderness for a son . Madonna represents Virgin Mary
and child represents Christ. Chinua Achebe is implying that the mother in the poem loves her
son more than Mary loved Jesus Christ; this shows how strong the bond between the mother and
her son is. In the Catholic Church it is believed than Mary watched Jesus die and her prayer did
not help him. This may be the reason why Achebe chose this metaphor to describe what the
mother is going through as her prayer also did not help her son. Throughout the poem the reader
can see that during the course of the death of the son the mother is praying for him to be okay.
Rubbed him down with bare palms. Because palms are usually used to pray, it reminds the
reader that the mother is praying to try and save her son s life. Visual imagery was used to
represent the predictable death of the son in line fifteen: the rust colored hair left on his skull .
The adjective rust colored shows that the son has been dying for a while. Achebe also uses
olfactory imagery to further describe the conditions of the refugee camp. The air was heavy with
odors of diarrhea , this shows the unhygienic conditions of the

In The Time Of The Butterflies Male Dominance Essay
Throughout history women have always been minimized from social, sexual , and political aspects
juxtaposed to men. Just like in the novel In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez, the author
uses the Mirabal sisters to demonstrate the inequalities set in the Dominican Republic. The
dictatorship of Rafael Trujillocauses the Mirabal sistersto come together and overthrow Trujillo s
regime.Trujillo. Rafael Trujillo was despised by many yet many were forced to worship him
like some type of paragon. As the novel progresses, illustrations of male dominance often appear
throughout each chapter. The Mirabal sisters: Minerva, Patria, Maria Teresa and Dede each
demonstrate the ability to overcome stigmas in order to obtain freedom. Dede Mirabal, the
second oldest Mirabal sister is portrayed as the weakest sister of them all. She represents the
obedient wife many women were used to being. I followed my husband. I didn t get involved
(Alvarez 171 playbook). She is an example of a follower. She allowed her husband Jaimito, to be
in control due to her inability to speak up. Another example that illustrates Dede lack of
independence is when she stated, he told me he ll have to leave me if i get mixed up in this thing
(Alvarez 179 playbook). Dedes excuse for not joining the revolution had a major impact towards
her relationship towards her sisters and especially with her husband. The relationship she had with
Jaimito was very abusive. The idea that a man was able to decide

Hillary Clinton Women s Rights Are Human Rights Speech...
In the past, women didn t have as many rights as men. They were seen as men s possessions who
were only allowed to cook, clean, and make babies. Women weren t allowed as many privileges
as men such as voting. But as the years went by, changes were made. Women were granted many
of the same privileges as men, but they were still being mistreated in some perspectives. On
September 5, 1995 in Beijing, China, Hillary Clinton delivered a speech about this issue at the
United NationsFourth World Conference for Women in front of 180 countries. Her speech was
called Women s Rights are Human Rights. She gave this speech to express her concern over the
mistreatment women have been facing. Clinton directed her speech to governments and other
organizations to argue why they need to help improve women s rights. Clinton uses ethos, pathos,
and logos to persuade her audience that women should be treated equally. Clinton uses ethos in
her speech to persuade her audience by showing them your credibility. Ethos is an effective way
to persuade an audience. This helps to show the audience that the speaker knows what they re
talking about. As First Lady and Senator, Clinton shows she has credibility on the topic by saying
Over the past 25 years, I have worked persistently on issues relating to women, children, and
families. Over the past two and a half years. I ve has the opportunity to learn more about the
challenges facing women in my own country and around the world (Clinton 2).

Can Critical Regionalism Counteract The Impact Of...
Can Critical Regionalism counteract the impact of Globalisation on our cities?
In the era of constant networking and relaying of information, the world has become a much
smaller place. The shrinking world has somewhat become a familiar spectacle of identical fads and
lifestyles. At least in the developed countries, globalisation has given birth to homogenous
consumer culture. Demonstrated not only by the expansion of multi national cooperations such as
Apple and Starbucks but also by the indistinct architecture. It is a common sighting in urban cities
today to see the identical steel, concrete and glass structures. This occurrence might be innate due
to the easy exportation of concepts and architects, however not obligatory. Whilst advancing
towards a modern society, architects have adapted this universal style of architecture that fails to
represent the unique topography of different cities. Architects have the choice to either repeat the
same building everywhere or to push ourselves forward, to create an encounter between ourselves
and the local culture (Koolhaas, 2012). If the notion of Critical Regionalism were to be practiced by
architects through the integration of the local culture with modern techniques, it could potentially
return the missing identities of these cities.
Critical Regionalism was devised during the early 20th century, as an attempt to reject the
monotony developed by the International Style and the purposeless ornamentation utilised by

Portrayal Of Women In The Media
Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, and Eartha Kitt are famously known for their hourglass figures.
Years ago, women were celebrated for their natural curvy figures. Today, if you turn on the
television or open a magazine, one comes face to face with unrealistically thin models. This
epidemic has increased the number of women who are dissatisfied with their bodies. This paper
will assess several articles, literature reviews, and papers that relate to the media s portrayal of
the ideal women s body being extremely thin. Each source elaborates on the dissatisfaction
women have with their bodies as a result of the content released in the media. Irving (2008)
defines media as a Tool used to transmit ideas, images, messages, or information to the public.
The media strategically targets adolescent females. This is specifically ages 13 18 (Steinberg
Morris, 2001). During these precious years of life, adolescents go through periods of struggle with
identity. The most prominent struggle is understanding their role in society, and conforming to
social norms. Media today offers a distorted vision of the world, and therefore makes it difficult
for adolescents to decipher what is actually realistic (Van Vonderen Kinnally, 2012). Present day,
the media has easily become the most influential factor of our culture. For instance, when a news
story, product, or service needs to be publicized where do individuals turn? Social media, television,
and magazines have become the

Desensitization In Heart Of Darkness
The world will remain as brutal as our level of desensitization to its brutality. (Unknown) Many
humans in this world no longer feel shock or distress at scenes of cruelty, violence, or suffering
as they are overexposed to such images. In other words, these people have become desensitized
and display no empathy towards others. In the event that one is exposed to these types of
surroundings on a regular basis they begin to adapt and become unaware of how heinous their
actions actually are. Though not everyone partakes in these atrocious acts of violence, they are still
in the wrong as they are simply bystanders watching the victims being abused. In essence
desensitization causes humans to adapt, become callous to their surroundings, and become
apathetic towards the others right to live. Adaptation is the action or process in which an organism
becomes suited to its environment. As an illustration, this article on violence in prison focuses on
the idea that one adapts to their surroundings and gets used to what is happening around them. I
learned to adapt to my situation, but adaptation came at a cost. I became desensitized to the
violence that I witnessed around me (Papa, 2016). This shows that the men in prison have become
immune to the events that are occurring. The biggest adaptation seen in The Heart of Darkness is
in Marlow as he not only becomes desensitized to brutality in the Congo, but also adapts his morals
to fit the circumstances as well. You know I

Mining Hazards Are Caused By Mining Activities That Impact...
Mining hazards are caused by mining activities that impact the nearby environment. Irreversible
damages were caused around the globe since the beginning of mining.
On January 22, 1959, an underground coal mine located in Pennsylvania, U.S.A., suffered one of
the major disasters in the American coal mining industry. The River Slope Mine, an underground
coal mine under the Knox Coal Company administration, was flooded by the Susquehanna River
after their experienced personnel followed orders and continued mining the Pittston vein area.
Catastrophic consequences followed after reaching the safety stop line beneath the Susquehanna
River. From a total of 82 men that were present at the time of the occurrence only 38 men
evacuated successfully and were able to find their way out with no other assistance than the
desperation to live. After enormous effort 32 men were rescued later that same day. The
subsequent mine damage was extensive and sadly 12 men were trap, despite the relentless effort to
rescue them the task was impossible to complete, their bodies were never recovered.
The purpose of this study is based on engineering geology, assuring that the geological factor
regarding the location, design, development, operation and maintenance of the River Slope Mine
(Knox Mine) were recognised and accounted for.
The monitoring of active mining operations are performed by the owners and by the mining
authorities, but depending on the knowledge and standards at the time, hidden

The Cedar Fire
Abigail Beinke

Research Paper
It was on October 21, 2003 at 5:37 pm that the nightmare started. A wildfire, The Cedar Fire ,
spread rapidly in the Cleveland National Forest. Communication systems were destroyed and
houses burned to the ground. The fire was contained on November 4, 2003.
It is said that the wildfire was caused by a lost hunter. His name was Sergio Martinez. He is from
Redlands, California. Before starting the fire, he was following his hunter buddy, Ronald
Adkins, until they got separated at 10 a.m. that morning. He lied at first and said he shot his rifle
before laying down to rest in hopes to draw attention. Sergio Martinez then confessed he lit two
small signal fires which later turned into fourteen separate fires. He wanted to improve his
chances of being found. The fire he started was to be a signal fire and one to keep him warm.
But as minutes passed, the fire grew out of control. The fire started near San Diego but Martinez
was found in Cold Water Canyon in Beverly Hills, California one week later. He claims he was
doing what he learned in his hunter safety course back in 2002.
Much damage was done to homes, families, and personal belongings. Martinez said the following

Why Didn t Noah Swat Those Two Mosquitoes?
We all know how Noah was instructed by God to make an ark, and fill it with two of every sort

waiting for the nurse to stick the big, gleaming needle in your vein for the nth time, you will
definitely want those pesky blood sucking parasites dead!
World Health Organization (WHO) celebrates World Health Day on 7th April each year and the
theme for 2014 was, Vector borne diseases under the banner Small Bite Big Threat .Vector borne
diseases account for 17% of the estimated global burden of all infectious diseases!
Imagine Mr. X, a resident of Mumbai who is suffering from high fever, severe headache (behind the

The Sociological Experiences Of High School And College...
Coming into college, one major thing I was excited for was the week of homecoming. In high
school, I always had the most spirit and this week was one of my favorites. That being said, I
looked forward to participating in the homecoming events this past fall football season. I gained
from this experience is that both high schooland college homecomings are sociological events that
can be compared in many ways. The homecomingI am most familiar with is a high school
homecoming. During the week, students would practice agency meaning the freedom
individuals have to choose and act (Witt, 5). If you didn t want to participate in anything, people
wouldn t force you to do it. Every day we would have different theme to go with our overall
theme for the week. By putting up posters the week before, we used nonverbal communication,
the use of gestures, facial expressions, and other visual images to communicate (Witt, 53) to
spread the word about upcoming days. By the end of the week, everyone was ready to skip our
last class and go to our infamous Pep Rally. At our Pep Rally you could see the different
subcultures, segment of society that shares a distinctive pattern of mores, folkways, and values that
differ from the pattern of the larger society (p.59) in the separation of the classes.

Analysis Of The Article Selection, Slanting, And Charged...
According to Birk and Birk in Selection, Slanting, and Charged Language , the word slanting
could be used for or against or it can be used both ways. In Mokoto Rich s article is for the
Federal Guidelines. Now slanting by use of the devices of emphasis is unavoidable, for emphasis
is simply the giving the stress to the subject matter, and so indicating what is important and what
is less important (Birk and Birk2). It s basically stressing certain words and they can produce a
positive or negative outcome. In Rich s article is in favor if Federal Guidelines, because once you
start picking the article and going over it, sentenceby sentence, she had more to say about the
inequalities that the students are facing in their schools.
Rich s article uses slating throughout the paper, trying to push the reader to favor what the
author is saying. According to Birk, Each different stress gives you a different slant (favorable
or unfavorable or balanced) to the statement because it conveys a different attitude (Birk and
Birk2). The way the author emphasis the words in the article gives you a clue, on whether they
are in favor or against or balanced. For example, some of the words are must have equal access to
comparable programs, materials and facilities (Rich). The key words that seem to be stressed on
more in must have equal which suggests that the schools have to have it, she could ve used a
different words, but instead she used those. Birk and Birk suggests that we can

The Theory Of Multiple Intelligences Theory
What is intelligence? Is it how well an individual can excel at academic tasks, emotional tasks, or
physical tasks? Can intelligence be measure scientifically and accurately or is it an abstract idea or
concept that requires an individual to critically think and come up with an answer? A common
interpretation of intelligenceis the ability or abilities of an individual s capacity for: logic, emotion,
abstract, learning, planning, understanding, memory, self awareness, creativity, and most important
of all is the ability to problem solved. Intelligence itself is an umbrella with subtypes under it, and
the one to inquire about is the theory of multiple intelligences. Many scientists believe that this
theory does not exist because it cannot be proven scientifically but multiple intelligence theory
does exist. Multiple intelligences is not a teaching style as many seem to believe, but it is a new
way to look at the IQ of an individual while not being bounded by the traditional IQ tests. Just like
general intelligences theory, the multiple intelligence theory can be used to distinguish intelligences
through tests, logically define theory, as well as real world experiences and applications. These two
theories, multiple and general intelligence, has been debated time and time again in the field of
psychology but with no absolute solution.
The theory of multiple intelligences was originated by Howard E. Gardner and was publicized in
1983 in his book, Frames of Mind: The Theory of

Benefits And Risks Of Mass Digital Adoption
I am part of a generation of economists that grew up online. Thus, I have witnessed the growth
promise and disruptive potential of Internet based technologies driven by their capacity to
amplify and propagate economic phenomena. I want to develop and test theories about the
economy wide impact of digital technologies. My (micro)empiricist side built working with Amy
Finkelstein at NBER and Edward Miguel at UC Berkeley tells me to trust data more than
anecdotal evidence. Simultaneously, my (macro)theorist side developed at Universitat Pompeu

Compare And Contrast The Three Stages Of Domestic Abuse
Why Signs of Domestic Abuse Go Unnoticed and How to Solve the Social Problem With Support
from Professional Organizations and Communities
Introduction
In the United States, domestic abuse affects lives of thousands of victims daily. There have been
suggestions that this is an issue that individuals should face on a personal level; however, it is a
social problem that warrants broad level support in addressing. The case can be made that solving
the social problem requires a process that includes implementing vigorous steps towards reducing
common cultural misconceptions of how victims experience domestic abuse. Because domestic
abuse affects the lives of many victims who range in age, gender, and occupation, recognizing the
oft ignored warning ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Domestic abuse has the potential to transfer into the semi public realm of the workplace from the
private realm of the home (MacGregor, Wathen, and MacQuarrie 245). Unfortunately, no studies to
date identify how managers implement policies to prevent domestic abuse from transferring into
the workplace. Upon acknowledging this research gap, victims of domestic abuse report that some
coworkers bear the brunt of criticism and harassment from intimate partners (245). Likewise,
unexplained absenteeism may indicate a sign of domestic abuse in some

Quantitative Arbitrage Trading Strategy Analysis
Many financial instruments have exhibited mean reversion, such as US and global equities [1],
commodities [2], foreign exchange rates [3] as well as volatility indices [19]. Moreover, some
researchers have also found mean reverting process to be very useful in modeling the interest rate
and default risk dynamics [20]. In financial industry, some practitioners even attempt to profit by
constructing mean reverting prices which are usually known as statistical arbitrageor pair trading.
Statistical arbitrage is a more sophisticated trading strategy that evolved out of the simpler pairs
trade strategy [4]. In the pairs trading, two highly correlated stocks are put into pairs and when one
stock outperforms the other, we short this stock and long the other stock. Unlike the pair trading,
Statistical arbitrage usually considers a basket of hundreds or more stocks, long in some and short
in others, in order to construct a mean reversion portfolio.
The pairs/statistical arbitrage trading strategies have gained great popularity with the invention of
exchange traded funds (ETFs), as some ETFs are created to track the underlying indexes/assets.
The mean reverting spreads among commodity ETFs have already been investigated and the
trading strategies have been developed for statistical arbitrage [21]. Moreover, the mean reverting
spread between physical gold price and gold ETFs has also been investigated [22].
Given the dynamics of the underlying portfolio or assets, investors have to

The Is An Integral Part National Security
Cybersecurity is an integral part national security. Cyber attacks are increasing in frequency and
success and can target virtually anything connected to a network. These threats can affect everyday
activities such as talking on a cell phone, driving a car, riding a train, shopping, or flying. They
can also affect the highest levels of our country s government, from a Secretary of State s email
server to the data base of millions of government and military employees. Nearly everything these
days is digital. That simple fact means that everything digital is vulnerable. From military
technology to a child monitor, the cybersecurity is paramount to national security, because if it can
be used to destroy or disrupt, an adversary will try to employ it in their favor.
Cybersecurity and US National Security Policy
The idea of cyber security actually originated following the Cold War, when technological
innovations were becoming more and more computerized and the threat of a digital Pearl Harbor
or the use of weapons of mass disruption were talking points of politicians and tech specialists
(Hansen, L., Nissenbaum, H., 2009, p. 1155). Modern society and specifically the US, as one of the
most technologically advanced nations in the world, is built on a system dependent on electronics,
telecommunications, energy, and a financial system heavily dependent on the internet, servers, and
connectivity (de Laat, W., 2012, p. 453). There is almost no such thing as stand alone

Safety Performance Case Study
Safety performance are assessed by the risk factors conducted all throughout the construction
industry. One of those factors are musculoskeletal disorders and injuries and how it affects
production by the loss of time and limited work time. There are numerous programs that can be
beneficial and have a return on investment impact and minimize musculoskeletal disordersand
injury within the construction industry. A study by Dr. Sang. D. Choi, Dr. Sathy Rajendran, and
Kwangseog Ahn have concluded work related musculoskeletal disorder (WMSDs) and injuries can
be reduced by implementing a stretch and flex (SF) program. Their study incorporated data
gathered through survey questionnaires from three piloted occupational safety and health... Show

The third section consisted of information received on general injury/illness within the firms.
Examples of these included, most frequent types of injury/illness within the line of work, most
severe monetary injury/illness within in the line of work, prioritize based on frequency of injury
/illness, and the frequency employees most likely to be injured/illness. The fourth section
included the safety performances from the past three years pre and post SF programs. This
information was measured primarily from the WMSD rates (WR), OSHA recordable incident
rate (TRIR), and lost time case incident rate (LTCR). Moreover, the WMSDs included injuries
such as muscles, tendons, joints, and nerves, which ultimately resulted in the loss of man hours
calculated for the number of WMSDs per 100 workers per 200,000 hours. Accordingly, TRIRs
are described as a result of exposure or event at work that require certain medical treatment beyond
first aid. As with LTCRs, they are incidents that result from exposures causing employees to be
away from work. Together these rates are often calculated in the same manner as WR.
In 2016, statistics from the Bureau of Labor reports WMSDs account for one third of all worker
injury and illness cases combined associated by heavy lifting, bending,

Similes In Odyssey
Homer uses stylistic and narrative features to construct interesting and diverse female characters
in his epic poem The Odyssey . Characters such as Penelope, Athene, Circe and Calypso are
developed into varied and stimulating characters for Homer s universal audience through the
use of various literary techniques. Homer uses the stylistic feature of epic similes to depict
Penelope as a diverse and interesting character. Homer offers this epic simile as a brief look into
the inner thoughts and feelings of Penelope whilst also performing the task of creating rhythm
during the poem. Homer writes Her mind in torment, wheeling like some lion at bay, dreading
the gangs of hunters closing their cunning ring around him for the finish. This epic simile is used
by Homer to better understand the torment and fear felt by Penelope at the possibility of having
to unwittingly marry one of her suitors, however, this also show a level of cunning behaviour as
Penelope, although unwilling to marry one of her suitors is also reluctant to send them away.
Homer also uses epithets to describe Penelope s personality further, often referring to her as wise
Penelope , cautious or careful Penelope . This offers the audience a general and brief reminder of
the type of character traits Penelope possesses, mainly that of a typical Greek woman. Through
these literary techniques, Homer creates an interesting and multi layered female character. Homer
uses stylistic and narrative features to help

Malpractice Communication
Communication is an often overlooked aspect of the physician patient relationship. According to
one study in the Journal of the American Medical Association which compared primary care
physicians with no malpractice claims to those with claims, those with no claims against them spent
more time with patients on routine visits, used more humor with patients, and spent more time
orienting patients in regard to their health. The study clearly demonstrates that communicationis a
critical aspect of caring for patients and a lack thereof can potentially be the root cause of
malpractice claims. My communication skills, along with my maturity and empathy, which I have

Volunteering in the surgery waiting room at Redlands Community Hospital gave me the
opportunity to cultivate maturity and understand the role of empathy in communicating with
patients and their loved ones. On my very first day volunteering I made a thoughtless assumption
and mistakenly marked down the spouse of a homosexual patient as a friend on my list, forcing him
to clarify the dynamics of his relationship to me. This faux pas, albeit unintentional, only happened
once: I quickly realized that sensitivity, specifically through avoiding cultural assumptions, was
paramount to protecting the dignity of everyone I came into contact with. On another occasion, I
found myself on the wrong end of a heated conversation with some visitors, who were frustrated
that their patient s surgery time was pushed back due to the doctor being called away to perform an
emergency surgery. It was a frustrating experience after all, I was there to serve them but my own
experience with stress and uncertainty from my father s battle with Guillain BarrГ© syndrome

Should Welfare Subsidies Be Limited For Only The Social...

Mr. Williams
AP Government and Politics, Period 2
March 28, 2015
Should Welfare Subsidies be limited to only the Social Security System? Social programs for
aiding the needs of the U.S. population are called welfare subsidies. Federal social programs were
first proposed with Theodore Roosevelt s New Nationalism, and expanded during the Wilson,
Roosevelt, and Johnson Administrations. There are eighty three overlapping federal programs
which vary in eligibility requirements. They help provide food, shelter, healthcare, education and
money to American citizens. These services are provided through primary and secondary education,
subsidies of college education, pensions for eligible persons, subsidies for eligible low wage
workers, subsidies for housing, unemployment disability insurance, Supplemental Nutrition
Assistance Program benefits, subsidies for housing, and health insurance programs that cover
public employees. The largest and most prominent welfare subsidy is the Social Security Program
and the second largest is Medicare. Aside from Medicare and Social Security, Congress allocated
$717 billion to welfare subsidies in 2010. That same year, states allocated $210 billion. The total
allocations for Social Security and Medicare were $1.3 trillion in 2013, which was 37% of the
total Federal expenditure budget of $3.684 trillion. Aside from government welfare programs,
private welfare is about 1.6 trillion, about ten percent of the total US GDP. As part of the

The Effect Of Coconut Milk And Wheat Germ On Chemical
Results and Discussion
Chemical Analysis: The results of the effect of coconut milk and wheat germ on chemical
composition are presented in Table (1). The results show that have a significant (P 0.05) effect on
the fat content and ph value. In this regard, the fat contents was increased significantly (P 0.05)
with increasing the coconut milk percentage .While, the pH values were having significant (P 0.05)
differences between the treatments. Thus, these results may reflect high fat content and low pH
values of coconut milk.Though.the pH of all the yoghurt decreased with fermentation time,
however, the differences observed in the degree of pH decrease in the fermenting yoghurt might be
a reflection of the ability of the yoghurt ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rheological properties: Results of rheological properties of yoghurt as affected by coconut milk and
wheat germ addition are shown in Table (3).The results show that ,the time of coagulation(Table3
Figure4) was increased significantly(P 0.05) with increasing the coconut milk and wheat germ
percentage. While, addition of wheat germ slightly increased the time of coagulation .These results
are also in agreement with Imele and Atemnkeng (2001) who found that, the time of coagulation
was increased with increasing the coconut milk percentage. Moreover, Isono et al., (2001) reported
that coconut oil contained some antimicrobial compounds. The addition of coconut milk while the
yoghurt fermentation was already in progress may retard acidity development in yoghurt so
produced. This might be consequent upon the inhibitory effect of some chemical compounds
present in coconut milk on the yoghurt bacteria that were supposedly in the exponential (active)
phases of growth.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, the

considered to be the generation institutionalization. This means that community policing
approaches and techniques have been implemented across police agencies nationwide. A program

Characteristics In William Golding s Lord Of The Flies
By Sigmund Freud s words, every human s psyche is made up of 3 components. Two of these such
components are the id and the ego. While the id is the instinctual part of the human psyche, the ego
is the more realistic and civilized part. At times, these traits overpower the other component, which
is seen in William Goldings novels. In William Golding s Lord of the Flies, we see how the
island plays a role in expressing these traits by letting the id consume the ego. In the beginning,
the kids are civilized by making rational decisions, which represents the ego. When the plane
crashed, we see the kids group up and begin voting for leadership, which shows them following
the societal norms, Let s have a vote. Yes! Vote for chief! (Golding 22). The kids are following
democratic values by giving the children the power to vote for their official leaders. Following
democratic values shows a bit of their ego because they create systems to keep things organized
and suppressing their animal instincts. The society that the boys came from was orderly,
something they re trying to imitate. That imitation shows us how their ego is now motivating
them to try and get rescued. Additionally, we see Ralph realizing that there are no grownups and
begins to organize a system, There aren t any grownups. We shall have to look after ourselves...
We ll have to have Hands up like at school (Golding 33). Ralph created a functional system to
avoid any chaos on the island. This is interesting because

Analysis Of The Corpse Of Brutus Essay
Standing over the corpse of Brutus, Antony begins his terse and final speech with the words
This was the noblest Roman of them all. In order to discover the meaning of this claim, we must
look to the next few lines in which Antony provides support for it. He notes that all the
conspirators save only he / did that they did in envy of great Caesar. This seems, at least
regarding Brutus, to be accurate. We find evidence for this in the beginning of the scene set in
Brutus s orchard. Brutus says regarding Caesar I know no personal cause to spurn at him, / But
for the general. While it is not, as we shall soon find, always advisable to take the claims of this
play s characters at face value, these words are spoken when Brutus is alone and consequently
without reason to dissemble. Brutus thus does not bear any personal envy for Caesar but only
opposes him for the general cause, which is the common welfare of Rome. This aligns very well
with what Antony says next in his final speech, that Brutus only in a general honest thought / And
common good to all made one of [the conspirators]. So far, then, Antony seems to reckon Brutus
the noblest Roman of them all because of his commitment to the general welfare at the expense of
his own, and his speech perhaps expresses a tragically late recognition of Brutus s greatness.
The next three lines of this speech, however, when contrasted with the first line, present a serious
claim about nobility as it applies to the citizen and to

  • 2. The Owner Of Essence Yoga I choose to interview the owner of Essence Yoga, Deb Manera Cunha. I have known Deb for a couple of years but knew very little about the successful yoga studio she owns. I sat down with Deb on July 21st and was truly inspired about by her story and business sense. The Venture. Essence Yoga is a studio offering Yoga and meditation 7 days a week. They are a community based studio located in Cranston s Pawtuxet Village. They offer safe instruction to men and women of all ages, shapes and sizes. Part of their mission is encouraging clients to find a healthy lifestyle and allow the practice of yoga help balance out the day to day grind. Deb worked in the Yoga field for 5 years before deciding to go into business on her own. Yoga was more of a part time job for her as her children were very young, but after her Dad s passing in 2011, she took a short break from working to refocus on her family. During that break she began debating going out on her own, opening her own yoga studio, instead of returning to work for someone else. Deb was really close to her dad and took his suggestions to heart. Her dad had a saying he always followed in his life, take risks in life, live without regret, go all in . Deb decided that was exactly what she was going to do and Essence Yoga opened its doors in February of 2012. Four years later, Deb now has seven employees working for her. Struggles and Challenges. During the early survival period, Deb was teaching classes seven days a week ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Soft Determinism Is Compatible Compatibilism is the philosophical belief that determinism is compatible with human freedom. To define determinism as a metaphysical thesis that the facts and occurrences of the past, following the laws of nature and physics will give to only one possible future outcome in that moment. Compatibilism breaks down into several versions for instance, soft determinismor self determination, classical, contemporary, and opposing philosophical thoughts such as incompatibilism, liberalism and hard determinism. Soft determinism states that humans are determined and still free, when an individual acts freely by being the cause of their own actions. What an individual wants is determined by external events such as genetics, culture or upbringing and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first is surface freedom which is when an individual has the power to make their own choices. The second kind is deeper freedom, which is the ability of an individual to form their own desires. Free will can manipulated by many external factors including advertisements and peer pressure. Free will in relation to compatibilism is the unique ability of an individual to exercise control over their choices in a manner necessary for moral responsibility. A common misconception is because free will is compatible with all events being caused means free means caused. Free does not mean caused, in any aspect. The problem of free will and compatibilism is that will is determined by prior events in the casual chain, which causes and determines the actions of those involved. It has been suggested that chance and random occurrences is an explanation for freedom, however if something was truly random then it would break the casual chain. It could then be argued that because of chance outcomes from an individuals action that they could not be morally responsible. It is common for philosophers to counter this argument by stating that chance is an illusion, Albert Einstein once stated God does not play dice implying that everything has a cause even if we have not figured it out ... • 4. The Berlin Blockade Is The First Major International... The Berlin Blockade is said to be the first major international crises of the Cold War. The basis of this blockade was to cut of Western Allies railway, road, and canal access to the eastern side of the city. The Soviets proposed an offer to the west, in which they would drop the blockade, if newly introduced Deutschmark currency was withdrawn from West Berlin. But seeing as though if they did agree, the German society would only crumble even further, so the westerners rejected the offer. The idea of the an airlift came to mind of the western allies, as they wanted aid Berlin citizens and abolish the Soviet authority. This idea was inspired by the World War II American airlift from India, over the Himalayas, to China The Hump , to resupply the Chinese war effort. Planning and investigating were soon done by the three nations in an attempt to figure out and carry out a large scale solution. On November 30th, 1945, it was announced that there would be 23 mile wide air corridors providing passage to Berlin. Since the use of unarmed aircraft would be the transport method, the Soviets could not accuse that the cargo aircraft were a military threat, like if they were tanks or trucks. Being faced with non lethal aircraft refusing to turn around, the only way to keep the blockade impassable would be to shoot them down. The Soviets were forcibly put in a position of either shooting down unarmed humanitarian aircraft, which in turn would break their own agreements, or back down ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

But this bill almost didn t even pass. They called it the Service Member Readjustment Act of 1944 at that time it was more commonly known as the GI Bill of Rights it was delayed in Congress, where members of the Senate and the House argued over specifications over this controversial bill. • 6. ISLAM REL1006S: COURSE ESSAY Discuss how Islam is a quest to be faithful to the transcendent, both directly and through social engagement Islam is a religion based on the belief in one God, His messenger and the four other pillars. These five pillars are central to Muslims, followers of Islam and mould their beings and are part of their everyday lives. This essay will look at the abovementioned pillars, what they are and how they form part of the quest to be faithful to the transcendent. Mention will also be made to how Islam plays out in everyday life, thus how this quest is and can be done both directly and through social engagement. This again, makes reference to the remembrance of those who are not as fortunate, specifically, fellow Muslim brothers and sisters and the importance of togetherness in order to once again, please Allah, following in the Prophet s footsteps. The fifth and last pillar of Islam is the Hajj. The Hajj refers to the holy pilgrimage to Makkah, acts done at and around the Ka bah, the house of God and also other precise and detailed series of rituals as prescribed. The gathering of all pilgrims on the plains of Arafat, men dressed in nothing but two cloths and women in plain white thobes (form of Islamic dress), is the highlight and most important part of the journey for pilgrims. Here one s previous sins are forgiven and lots and lots of supplication are made to God (Online Source Al Islam.org). The white attire that is prescribed is so that no one Muslim can be socially distinguished from the other. This is the one place where everyone is equal and no judgement can be made. The five pillars that are central to Islam make it evident that through these various ways, Muslims are governing their lives correctly, according to Allah, following the way of His messenger and as a result, brought closer to Him on a spiritual level. Allah is never objectified and one cannot then be physically closer to Him. There are also other acts of worship that can be done in order to become closer to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Analytical Effectiveness Of The Assessment As I reflect about the various assessments I utilized for my project, I have mixed feelings about the evaluative effectiveness of the assessments. When I began examine Jen s formal assessments results (such as, Running Records, BY and EY Benchmarks, Sound Identification /Sigh Word Inventory forms), I believed the assessments would accurately demonstrate a positive progress Jen had made during the course of the year. What I discovered was both an intended and unintended consequence of assessment use. On the one hand, I found the assessments to be useful tools to gauge student literacy abilities. On the other hand, I believe that the focus on assessment led to the teacher developing a deficit mindset with Jen. Often times Jen s teacher narrowly would focus on Jen s inability to be at grade level or lack of drastic improvement. In fact, the only thought Jen s teacher had was on the fact that Jen did not meet the expected reading level for the end of the year for K 2. I believe if teachers rely too much on assessment scores limits their ability to understand external factors or barriers that influence a child s literacy. McKenna and Picard (2007) discuss the importance for teachers to view students word miscue analysis beyond the checks on paper and formulas. McKenna and Picard caution teachers to avoid focusing on the assessment scores because they believe children reading strategies to decode words or understand a word meaning does not always mean reading proficiency. ... • 8. The Strategic Board Game Diplomacy The strategic board game Diplomacy focuses on wars, but more importantly the act of negotiating. The players are responsible for forming strategies by both developing and breaking alliances with their competitors. The game is set in Europe during World War I with most teams beginning with similar resources. Each player competes as an either Austria Hungary, Turkey, Italy, England, France, Russia, or Germany. With at least three home center game pieces on the board, there are strategic movements in order to control one of the eighteen supply centers. This involves phases of negotiation prior to movement of game piece. There is no factor of luck. The main variable in the game is each team s ability to convince the others to do what they want. The core game strategy is negotiation. In the game and actual life all are envious of England because of its location and resources as well as its well developed army. Russia Germany and France are potential threats. Realizing that England has to prevent Germany from joining with France due how is the game diplomacy unrealistic to their potential. I believe that many of the alliances that occurred during World War Idid not actually happen in our game of Diplomacy. There several shocking twists and turns. In our game, Italy and Russia stayed rather benign and non engaging. They moved some pieces out of their countries; however, they primarily just protected their home country. • 10. Analysis Of The Book Youth And Ghost By Adam... The historians who begin the 20th century with the First World War do so because of the great change in thinking brought about during and after the fighting: people became less friendly toward colonialism; people s roles in their societies were often not the same after the war, most of all women, and where other methods failed to, a new kind of nationalism could perhaps help them to rebuild their identities as they rebuilt their countries. Various sources about the time can be used to examine it from different angles and draw different conclusions about it: Vera Brittain s Testament of Youth, for example, is a primary source and a memoir, assembled from her own diaries and letters sent from around the turn of the century, and has the unique flavor of being a woman s perspective during the war. King Leopold s Ghost by Adam Hochschild is a secondary source and a collection of stories all looking at the same subject colonialism in Africa, the Congo in particular and it provides multiple views through different eyes. The chapter On Humanity in Dark Times: Thoughts about Lessing from Hannah Arendt s book Men in Dark Times is also a secondary source, as the book is a collection of her own essays and thus likely has notes of personal reflection as Brittain s memoir would while bringing in the facts and somewhat journalistic observation of King Leopold s Ghost. • 11. First Transcontinental Railroad Essay The First Transcontinental Railroad was an extremely exciting topic to learn about and it was very interesting, which is why I chose it as my History Day topic. I chose to portray my project as an exhibit since I decided that it was only appropriate to show these series of events in a more visual, direct way. There were other ways I could have created my final project, such as a documentary, skit, or website; however, I decided that sketching a train and making physical 3D artifacts would be more visually appealing. The research part of this project was done through Cornell notes, which were tedious at first, but I realized that it helped a lot when I actually put my project together. I used a variety of sources, mostly from credible websites.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was time to put all of the research I had done in the form of an exhibit. Before doing the exhibit, I made a layout of what was most probably going to go on my final poster. Even though I had the layout, I still encountered some problems. I would have had run into so many more problems if I hadn t done the layout, so I am glad that I did it. Right before putting my project together, I quickly went to the store to get the materials like the poster board, glue, clay for the artifacts, etc. Now that I had all the materials, I was finally set to complete the enormous project. One of the problems I encountered was that I didn t have enough room on my poster board for everything that I needed. Because of this, I decided to reprint some of the items, so that I could fit everything. Another problem I ran into was that I could not fit my title on one page, so I decided to print it on multiple pages and just glue them together. After I was finished with cutting and pasting, I realized that I did pretty well. I also realized that after I finished my project that I did not have to color the sketch of a train that I drew because most of my pictures were black and white anyway. After finishing my poster board, I had to create my 3D artifacts. I decided to make a replica of the locomotive part of the Transcontinental Railroad out of cardstock, a small part of the railroad tracks out of clay, and a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. The Effects Of Hip Hop Music On Adolescents Effects of Hip Hop Music on Adolescents Music is a significant part of the lives of most people all over the world. In the United States, people listen to more than 25 hours each week [1]. Hip hop makes up a large percentage of adolescent music genre preference. It goes without saying that this overwhelming presence of music in the lives of so many people will have a psychological effect on American culture and our way of life. But how exactly is Hip Hop affecting us psychologically and culturally? The effects of music videos on adolescences have been the subject of controversy for decades. The common reason for the concern has been appropriately summed by Arnett (a Research Professor of Psychology at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts), who explained, women are used as props for the illusive life the music video is portraying the artist to have. The concern that hip hop culture, as seen in music videos, has become heavily influential on young people s views of sexuality. The concern about mainstream hip hop music and music videos sexualizing women, in particular, is so omnipresent, many can even be referenced as rape culture by embedded sexual violence in the lyrics being disguised as pleasurable elements of hip hop. The Kaiser Family Foundation in the year 2001 reported that teenagers rank entertainment media as the main source for information about sexuality and sexual health [3]. • 13. Zeus In Frankenstein As the leader of Mount Olympus, the gods, and the universe, Zeus was often looked up to as the shining example excellence in Greek society. According to the people s beliefs, Zeus was a partial reason for their creation, as he gave the titan, Prometheus, the task of creating man. Prometheus created man out of clay, yet the people looked up to Zeusfor motivation and inspiration. However, Zeus was not always a role model, committing adultery against his wife, Hera, and letting his anger get the best of him in cases of lashing out against the people of Earth and the other gods. However, for the most part, the humans that he was responsible for acted in a far more compassionate and caring manner towards one another, not reflective of the values... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This can be seen when he says, Oh, Frankenstein! Generous and self devoted being! What does it avail that I now ask thee to pardon me? I who irretrievably destroyed thee by destroying all thou lovest. Alas! He is cold, he cannot answer me (Shelley, 221). In the following pages, however, the monster admits to having shown a lack of compassion during the murders of Henry Clerval and Victor s wife, Elizabeth. Even though the monster seems to be mindlessly killing people close to Victor, one can argue that his rampage was based on humanity. Before the murders, the creature simply seeks a female companion from his creator, to be able to, interchange of those sympathies necessary for [its] being (Shelley, 147). While Victor did initially comply, he throws the idea out the window, and as a result, the monster experiences true heartbreak. This heartbreak leads the monster to commit the crimes that it did, inflicting a fairly equal amount of pain upon Frankenstein compared to the suffering inflicted on the monster. For example, Victor promotes the suffering by taking away the companion and creating the creature in a wretched form. Furthermore, the monster is extremely young, so like a child crying over a bump on a table, Frankenstein s creation is overreacting to a situation that he has never encountered before. He solely acts out of a long for humanity and equality in the world he was forced into. This is seen on page 222, when Victor s monster says to Robert Walton, he sought his own enjoyment in feelings and passions form the indulgence of which I was forever barred, then impotent envy and bitter indignation filled me with an insatiable thirst for vengeance (Shelley, ... • 14. Ralph Waldo Emerson Analysis Ralph Waldo Emerson gave a speech to the men of the Phi Beta Kappa Society at Cambridge University entitled The American Scholar in 1837. The speech focused on the main ideas of transcendentalism as well as how different factors in society affect man s ability to realize that they are their own individuals. Harold Bloom, a well known literary critic who evaluated topics such as the bible and Shakespeare, believed that Emerson s writing was the template for all future authors. Bloom believed that adversity allows people to have a deeper understanding of the world. However, Emerson focused on the loss of knowledge in the society due to the misunderstanding of younger generations in his time period while Bloom mainly focused on how Emerson s views on individualism and transcendentalism affected all writing whether admitted or not. Harold Bloom was correct in his critique, Out of Panic, Self Reliance published in 2008, when he confirmed Ralph Waldo Emersons view point in his speech The American Scholar (1837) stating that overcoming adversity is an essential part to gaining wisdom and forming self reliance by comparing it to current political events in order to show once again that Ralph Waldo Emerson was very influential to not only authors but to the overall evolution of man s thoughts. It can be inferred from Emerson that the adversity that he so deeply describes throughout his speech could be man s eternal struggle to discover his own self reliance and experience real world connections instead of just reading about them and not fully understanding or even comprehending the meaning of what is being read. Ralph Waldo Emerson separates society into two groups known as Man Thinking ( Emerson 2) who has allowed himself to be open to new ways of life and understanding and Mere thinkers (Emerson 2) who simply follow the trends and patterns society without any thought of their own. He believes the Mere thinkers are inevitable lost in adversity and do not fully understand transcendentalist ideas. Nevertheless, it will never be too late to find self reliance and contribute an opinion to the world thus diversifying society. When people finally rise above adversity they recognize the god within themselves ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is undisputable that the implementation of particular tasks by the state turns out indispensable for the functioning of society, however, in terms of market existence the underlying advantages, to be discussed below, are much less favorable. The classification of social regulations In the course of the recent 50 years the decrease of economic regulations is quite noticeable while the social ones present an increasing tendency and have been... The state frequently builds obstacles preventing economic growth. In many cases state regulations raise company functioning costs, slow down decision making processes and limit access to resources necessary for the production of goods and the provision of services. Finally, it is the consumer who suffers unfavorable effects of such regulations. One of the negative side effects, in terms of the state interference in the social sphere, are administration costs covered by the state budget and spent on running and supporting federal agencies. Another negative factor takes the form of bureaucratic inclinations presented by clerks in creating regulations the objective of which is often lost among inadequate requirements, the maze of rules difficult to overcome for consumers and entrepreneurs in order to meet due requirements. Additionally, entrepreneurs themselves are trying to extend the scope of regulations by seeking ways to use them to their own advantage. The costs to be covered by entrepreneurs refer to the necessary documentation, accounting and legal advice, employing consultants and experts, the purchase of necessary equipment, but also the cost of waiting time for indispensable ... • 16. Essay on The Effects Of Britan On The Colonies During... Between the settlement of Jamestown in 1607 and the Treaty of Paris in 1763, the most important change that occurred in the colonies was the emergence of a society quite different from that in England. Changes in religion, economics, politics, and social structure illustrate this Americanization of the transplanted Europeans. By 1763 although some colonies still maintained established churches, other colonies had accomplished a virtual revolution for religious toleration and separation of church and state. The British, after many years of religious revolution had established the Anglican Church. In which the king of England was the head of this church. This resulted in almost no ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The northern colonies developed many trade triangles. One such triangle would be a northern captain setting out from New England with rum. This ship would then sail to the west coast of Africa and trade the rum for slaves. The captain would of course reek a handsome profit and with those slaves he would then take them to the West Indies to trade them for molasses. He then take the molasses and what was left of the slaves and sell them back in the colonies. This left the Northern colonies much richer than the southern colonies. The main reason for this difference is that Britain had always thought that the amount of money in the treasury is how powerful you were. The Americans thought that the more money you make the better off you were. It generally hinged on how much needed resources you wanted to own. The Americans saw past that and expanded heavily on trade. Therefore they could make more money. Building on English foundations of political liberty, the colonist extend the concepts of liberty and self government far beyond those envisioned in the mother country. Although Britain had a representative government they had a monarchy, sort of. Still even though they had a representative government the members of parliament were not directly chosen by the people. In Virginia, in specific Jamestown, the House of Burgesses said that representatives were to be chosen by land owning people. Another good idea from the colonies was the ... While Hakeem Olajuwon was one the most dominating centers that the NBA has ever seen, the defense usually didn t let him get easy buckets inside the paint. Or at least try not too. The offense that coach Tomjanovich used during the Houston Rocketsback to back championships relied heavily on Hakeem s post skills and the ability of their outside shooters to knock down wide open looks. William Furman became depressed, and started to commit theft for food and money. Furman was caught stealing several times, but was only given a light sentence. At 2 a.m. on August 11, William Furman broke into the house of William Micke, while Micke and his five children were sleeping. William Micke heard a noise and went downstairs to see where the noise was coming from. He spotted Furman, and Furman ran for the back door. He made the argument that his eighth and fourteenth amendment rights were being violated. The case moved up to the Supreme Court of the United States. In the trial, Furman had four main arguments: most western nations had abolished capital punishmentbecause it was an unsuccessful way to deter crime; juries only handed out about 100 death penalties each year, and only about 50 prisoners were sentenced to death so capital punishment was not being issued objectively; national prison records stated that executions almost always involved black prisoners; and the only reason why capital punishment had ... I have also wondered what happened on November 30,2000. The number one thing i know that happened on November 30 is that I was it was my birth day. I was born on November 30 of the year 2000. That day seemed to be a very sunny afternoon. That day my parents decided to name me Breanna. They name Breanna means noble strong and virtuous; the name is the feminine version of the name Brian. The year 2000 was a special year because it was the mathematical year and also because it was the international year for the culture of peace. Christmas is also an important time of the year and that is also another event most people wait forward to every year. In this year christmas wasn t to good for the people in china because of a christmas party that turned deadly. The party was at an unlicensed disco, and it caught on fire and ended up killing more than 300 people I share my birthday with many people but what excites me the most is the to find famous people that were born the same day as I was. In the Catholic Church it is believed than Mary watched Jesus die and her prayer did not help him. This may be the reason why Achebe chose this metaphor to describe what the mother is going through as her prayer also did not help her son. Throughout the poem the reader can see that during the course of the death of the son the mother is praying for him to be okay. Rubbed him down with bare palms. Because palms are usually used to pray, it reminds the reader that the mother is praying to try and save her son s life. Just like in the novel In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez, the author uses the Mirabal sisters to demonstrate the inequalities set in the Dominican Republic. The dictatorship of Rafael Trujillocauses the Mirabal sistersto come together and overthrow Trujillo s regime.Trujillo. Rafael Trujillo was despised by many yet many were forced to worship him like some type of paragon. As the novel progresses, illustrations of male dominance often appear throughout each chapter. The Mirabal sisters: Minerva, Patria, Maria Teresa and Dede each demonstrate the ability to overcome stigmas in order to obtain freedom. Dede Mirabal, the second oldest Mirabal sister is portrayed as the weakest sister of them all. She represents the obedient wife many women were used to being. I followed my husband. I didn t get involved (Alvarez 171 playbook). She is an example of a follower. She allowed her husband Jaimito, to be in control due to her inability to speak up. Another example that illustrates Dede lack of independence is when she stated, he told me he ll have to leave me if i get mixed up in this thing (Alvarez 179 playbook). Women were granted many of the same privileges as men, but they were still being mistreated in some perspectives. • 27. Can Critical Regionalism Counteract The Impact Of... Can Critical Regionalism counteract the impact of Globalisation on our cities? In the era of constant networking and relaying of information, the world has become a much smaller place. The shrinking world has somewhat become a familiar spectacle of identical fads and lifestyles. At least in the developed countries, globalisation has given birth to homogenous consumer culture. Demonstrated not only by the expansion of multi national cooperations such as Apple and Starbucks but also by the indistinct architecture. It is a common sighting in urban cities today to see the identical steel, concrete and glass structures. This occurrence might be innate due to the easy exportation of concepts and architects, however not obligatory. Whilst advancing towards a modern society, architects have adapted this universal style of architecture that fails to represent the unique topography of different cities. Architects have the choice to either repeat the same building everywhere or to push ourselves forward, to create an encounter between ourselves and the local culture (Koolhaas, 2012). If the notion of Critical Regionalism were to be practiced by architects through the integration of the local culture with modern techniques, it could potentially return the missing identities of these cities. Critical Regionalism was devised during the early 20th century, as an attempt to reject the monotony developed by the International Style and the purposeless ornamentation utilised by ... (Unknown) Many humans in this world no longer feel shock or distress at scenes of cruelty, violence, or suffering as they are overexposed to such images. In other words, these people have become desensitized and display no empathy towards others. In the event that one is exposed to these types of surroundings on a regular basis they begin to adapt and become unaware of how heinous their actions actually are. Though not everyone partakes in these atrocious acts of violence, they are still in the wrong as they are simply bystanders watching the victims being abused. In essence desensitization causes humans to adapt, become callous to their surroundings, and become apathetic towards the others right to live. Adaptation is the action or process in which an organism becomes suited to its environment. As an illustration, this article on violence in prison focuses on the idea that one adapts to their surroundings and gets used to what is happening around them. I learned to adapt to my situation, but adaptation came at a cost. I became desensitized to the violence that I witnessed around me (Papa, 2016). We all know how Noah was instructed by God to make an ark, and fill it with two of every sort of living thing, and gather food for them (Genesis 6:11 22) but if you are lying in a hospital bed waiting for the nurse to stick the big, gleaming needle in your vein for the nth time, you will definitely want those pesky blood sucking parasites dead! World Health Organization (WHO) celebrates World Health Day on 7th April each year and the theme for 2014 was, Vector borne diseases under the banner Small Bite Big Threat .Vector borne diseases account for 17% of the estimated global burden of all infectious diseases! Imagine Mr. X, a resident of Mumbai who is suffering from high fever, severe headache (behind the eyes), and nausea and vomiting. He also complains of excruciating joint pain. He has started to develop a petechial rash. Mr. X goes to his physician who orders some blood tests. His CBC shows decreased platelets and NS 1 antigen test is positive. What am I talking about? You guessed it right! DENGUE! Why talk about dengue? WHO says the world s fastest growing vector borne disease is dengue, with a 30 fold increase in disease incidence over the last 50 years. The Centre for Disease Control (CDC) states with more than one third of the world s population living in areas at risk for infection, dengue virus is a leading cause of illness and death in the tropics and subtropics. • 36. The Sociological Experiences Of High School And College... Coming into college, one major thing I was excited for was the week of homecoming. In high school, I always had the most spirit and this week was one of my favorites. That being said, I looked forward to participating in the homecoming events this past fall football season. I gained from this experience is that both high schooland college homecomings are sociological events that can be compared in many ways. The homecomingI am most familiar with is a high school homecoming. During the week, students would practice agency meaning the freedom individuals have to choose and act (Witt, 5). If you didn t want to participate in anything, people wouldn t force you to do it. Every day we would have different theme to go with our overall theme for the week. By putting up posters the week before, we used nonverbal communication, the use of gestures, facial expressions, and other visual images to communicate (Witt, 53) to spread the word about upcoming days. By the end of the week, everyone was ready to skip our last class and go to our infamous Pep Rally. At our Pep Rally you could see the different subcultures, segment of society that shares a distinctive pattern of mores, folkways, and values that differ from the pattern of the larger society (p.59) in the separation of the classes. A norm, which is an established standard or behavior maintained by society (Witt, 55), is seen throughout the gym with students wearing our school colors red, black, and white. Different students ... • 37. Analysis Of The Article Selection, Slanting, And Charged... According to Birk and Birk in Selection, Slanting, and Charged Language , the word slanting could be used for or against or it can be used both ways. In Mokoto Rich s article is for the Federal Guidelines. Now slanting by use of the devices of emphasis is unavoidable, for emphasis is simply the giving the stress to the subject matter, and so indicating what is important and what is less important (Birk and Birk2). It s basically stressing certain words and they can produce a positive or negative outcome. In Rich s article is in favor if Federal Guidelines, because once you start picking the article and going over it, sentenceby sentence, she had more to say about the inequalities that the students are facing in their schools. Rich s article uses slating throughout the paper, trying to push the reader to favor what the author is saying. According to Birk, Each different stress gives you a different slant (favorable or unfavorable or balanced) to the statement because it conveys a different attitude (Birk and Birk2). The way the author emphasis the words in the article gives you a clue, on whether they are in favor or against or balanced. For example, some of the words are must have equal access to comparable programs, materials and facilities (Rich). The key words that seem to be stressed on more in must have equal which suggests that the schools have to have it, she could ve used a different words, but instead she used those. Can intelligence be measure scientifically and accurately or is it an abstract idea or concept that requires an individual to critically think and come up with an answer? A common interpretation of intelligenceis the ability or abilities of an individual s capacity for: logic, emotion, abstract, learning, planning, understanding, memory, self awareness, creativity, and most important of all is the ability to problem solved. Intelligence itself is an umbrella with subtypes under it, and the one to inquire about is the theory of multiple intelligences. Many scientists believe that this theory does not exist because it cannot be proven scientifically but multiple intelligence theory does exist. Multiple intelligences is not a teaching style as many seem to believe, but it is a new way to look at the IQ of an individual while not being bounded by the traditional IQ tests. Just like general intelligences theory, the multiple intelligence theory can be used to distinguish intelligences through tests, logically define theory, as well as real world experiences and applications. These two theories, multiple and general intelligence, has been debated time and time again in the field of psychology but with no absolute solution. The theory of multiple intelligences was originated by Howard E. Gardner and was publicized in 1983 in his book, Frames of Mind: The Theory of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Thus, I have witnessed the growth promise and disruptive potential of Internet based technologies driven by their capacity to amplify and propagate economic phenomena. I want to develop and test theories about the economy wide impact of digital technologies. My (micro)empiricist side built working with Amy Finkelstein at NBER and Edward Miguel at UC Berkeley tells me to trust data more than anecdotal evidence. Simultaneously, my (macro)theorist side developed at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), UC Berkeley, and LSE reminds me to look at patterns in a system rather than in isolation. Combining my macro and development interests, I crafted a research agenda to explore the benefits and risks of mass digital adoption. For this proposal I received the La Caixa Fellowship Spain s NSF equivalent to fund my future graduate studies in Economics, which I hope to have the chance to pursue at MIT. • 42. Quantitative Arbitrage Trading Strategy Analysis Many financial instruments have exhibited mean reversion, such as US and global equities [1], commodities [2], foreign exchange rates [3] as well as volatility indices [19]. Moreover, some researchers have also found mean reverting process to be very useful in modeling the interest rate and default risk dynamics [20]. In financial industry, some practitioners even attempt to profit by constructing mean reverting prices which are usually known as statistical arbitrageor pair trading. Statistical arbitrage is a more sophisticated trading strategy that evolved out of the simpler pairs trade strategy [4]. In the pairs trading, two highly correlated stocks are put into pairs and when one stock outperforms the other, we short this stock and long the other stock. Unlike the pair trading, Statistical arbitrage usually considers a basket of hundreds or more stocks, long in some and short in others, in order to construct a mean reversion portfolio. The pairs/statistical arbitrage trading strategies have gained great popularity with the invention of exchange traded funds (ETFs), as some ETFs are created to track the underlying indexes/assets. The mean reverting spreads among commodity ETFs have already been investigated and the trading strategies have been developed for statistical arbitrage [21]. Moreover, the mean reverting spread between physical gold price and gold ETFs has also been investigated [22]. Given the dynamics of the underlying portfolio or assets, investors have to ... Cyber attacks are increasing in frequency and success and can target virtually anything connected to a network. These threats can affect everyday activities such as talking on a cell phone, driving a car, riding a train, shopping, or flying. They can also affect the highest levels of our country s government, from a Secretary of State s email server to the data base of millions of government and military employees. Nearly everything these days is digital. That simple fact means that everything digital is vulnerable. From military technology to a child monitor, the cybersecurity is paramount to national security, because if it can be used to destroy or disrupt, an adversary will try to employ it in their favor. Cybersecurity and US National Security Policy The idea of cyber security actually originated following the Cold War, when technological innovations were becoming more and more computerized and the threat of a digital Pearl Harbor or the use of weapons of mass disruption were talking points of politicians and tech specialists (Hansen, L., Nissenbaum, H., 2009, p. 1155). Modern society and specifically the US, as one of the most technologically advanced nations in the world, is built on a system dependent on electronics, telecommunications, energy, and a financial system heavily dependent on the internet, servers, and connectivity (de Laat, W., 2012, p. 453). Characters such as Penelope, Athene, Circe and Calypso are developed into varied and stimulating characters for Homer s universal audience through the use of various literary techniques. Homer uses the stylistic feature of epic similes to depict Penelope as a diverse and interesting character. Homer offers this epic simile as a brief look into the inner thoughts and feelings of Penelope whilst also performing the task of creating rhythm during the poem. Homer writes Her mind in torment, wheeling like some lion at bay, dreading the gangs of hunters closing their cunning ring around him for the finish. This epic simile is used by Homer to better understand the torment and fear felt by Penelope at the possibility of having to unwittingly marry one of her suitors, however, this also show a level of cunning behaviour as Penelope, although unwilling to marry one of her suitors is also reluctant to send them away. Homer also uses epithets to describe Penelope s personality further, often referring to her as wise Penelope , cautious or careful Penelope . This offers the audience a general and brief reminder of the type of character traits Penelope possesses, mainly that of a typical Greek woman. Safwan Siddiqi Mr. Williams AP Government and Politics, Period 2 March 28, 2015 Should Welfare Subsidies be limited to only the Social Security System? Social programs for aiding the needs of the U.S. population are called welfare subsidies. Federal social programs were first proposed with Theodore Roosevelt s New Nationalism, and expanded during the Wilson, Roosevelt, and Johnson Administrations. There are eighty three overlapping federal programs which vary in eligibility requirements. They help provide food, shelter, healthcare, education and money to American citizens. These services are provided through primary and secondary education, subsidies of college education, pensions for eligible persons, subsidies for eligible low wage workers, subsidies for housing, unemployment disability insurance, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, subsidies for housing, and health insurance programs that cover public employees. The largest and most prominent welfare subsidy is the Social Security Program and the second largest is Medicare. Aside from Medicare and Social Security, Congress allocated $717 billion to welfare subsidies in 2010. That same year, states allocated $210 billion. The total allocations for Social Security and Medicare were $1.3 trillion in 2013, which was 37% of the total Federal expenditure budget of $3.684 trillion. • 50. Characteristics In William Golding s Lord Of The Flies By Sigmund Freud s words, every human s psyche is made up of 3 components. Two of these such components are the id and the ego. While the id is the instinctual part of the human psyche, the ego is the more realistic and civilized part. At times, these traits overpower the other component, which is seen in William Goldings novels. In William Golding s Lord of the Flies, we see how the island plays a role in expressing these traits by letting the id consume the ego. In the beginning, the kids are civilized by making rational decisions, which represents the ego. When the plane crashed, we see the kids group up and begin voting for leadership, which shows them following the societal norms, Let s have a vote. Yes! Vote for chief! (Golding 22). The kids are following democratic values by giving the children the power to vote for their official leaders. Following democratic values shows a bit of their ego because they create systems to keep things organized and suppressing their animal instincts. The society that the boys came from was orderly, something they re trying to imitate. That imitation shows us how their ego is now motivating them to try and get rescued. Additionally, we see Ralph realizing that there are no grownups and begins to organize a system, There aren t any grownups. We shall have to look after ourselves... • 51. Analysis Of The Corpse Of Brutus Essay Standing over the corpse of Brutus, Antony begins his terse and final speech with the words This was the noblest Roman of them all. In order to discover the meaning of this claim, we must look to the next few lines in which Antony provides support for it. He notes that all the conspirators save only he / did that they did in envy of great Caesar. This seems, at least regarding Brutus, to be accurate. We find evidence for this in the beginning of the scene set in Brutus s orchard. Brutus says regarding Caesar I know no personal cause to spurn at him, / But for the general. While it is not, as we shall soon find, always advisable to take the claims of this play s characters at face value, these words are spoken when Brutus is alone and consequently without reason to dissemble. Brutus thus does not bear any personal envy for Caesar but only opposes him for the general cause, which is the common welfare of Rome. This aligns very well with what Antony says next in his final speech, that Brutus only in a general honest thought / And common good to all made one of [the conspirators]. So far, then, Antony seems to reckon Brutus the noblest Roman of them all because of his commitment to the general welfare at the expense of his own, and his speech perhaps expresses a tragically late recognition of Brutus s greatness. The next three lines of this speech, however, when contrasted with the first line, present a serious claim about nobility as it applies to the citizen and to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
