May 2024. Water pollution, also known as marine pollution, is the contamination of water sources by substances that make it unusable for human activities and disrupt aquatic ecosystems. Major contributors of water pollution include industrial waste, agriculture and farming, accidental oil spills, sewage, and marine dumping. The effects of water pollution include severe health issues, economic disruption, and disrupting the food chain. Water pollution affects both surface and groundwater sources, with groundwater pollution causing unsafe use and surface water pollution affecting all water sources above ground. Types of water pollution include chemical, physical, and nutrient-rich fertilizers. Water pollution control, prevention, and mitigation strategies include effective wastewater treatment, stormwater management, soil and sediment erosion control, organic farming, biodegradable plastics, and water conservation.
