2. The Bells Tone
Edgar Allan Poe s theme in The Bells is the four stages of a person s life. The silver bell is
appropriate for childhood, the golden bell is the one for youth and the maturing for marriage. The
brazen bell represents the harsh and dangers of middle age, and the iron bell is suited to old age
because of its heavy and melancholy tone and also because it is associated with the funeral knell.
(Litfinder)
In the first stanza, Poe never directly says the bells are Christmas bells, he uses the words tinkle,
icy air, and jingling, to let the reader know that he is describing Christmas. He uses repetition of
words like rhyme and time to give the reader an overall mood of happy (Poetry for student s pg.
47). He does this because this stanza ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Poe provides a visual image and an association with a thing of value by referring to the bells as
golden (pg.48). He describes the night as balmy which gives a soothing and mild feeling instead
of the harsh use of icy in the first stanza (pg.48). Poe s world usage and repetition help the reader
realize that this is a joyous mood. This stanza symbolizes maturing, starting a family, and growing
older.
The third stanza takes a dramatic turn and is dark and gloomy. The third stanza is describing the
chaos of a fire and the desperate sound of the fire alarm. Poe uses personification to describe the
fire. He says that fire has a desire to climb so high that it can sit next to the pale faced moon
(pg.49). Previously in the poem the repetition of bells was an upbeat and happy, but now he is
using it to create a sense of urgency and panic (pg.49).
The final stanza is the saddest and depressing in the poem. In this stanza Poe is describing a
person s funeral. The bells are now black and made of iron and the sound is illustrated as
melancholy and as a groan. Poe uses personification in the phrase rust within their throats (line
69) to describe the bells having a thick raspy voice. He also uses repetition by repeating Keeping
time, time, time, in a sort of runic rhyme (line 92, 96, 101) to create a creepy and disturbing feeling

3. Essay Lorraine Hansberry s A Raisin In The Sun
A Raisin in the Sun In the book A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, there were characters
whose dreams were stated, some of which were shattered by greed and misfortune and others
which would eventually come to be true. The first dream that came about was Walter s dream of
one day owning and maintaining a liquor store. He would do anything to attempt to get his dreamto
come true, but his mama wanted anything but that to happen. His mama had a dream of her own
though, she dreamed of one day owning her own house, where her whole family could stay
comfortably. She dreamed this because in the apartment that she resided in was too small, and
dumpy, as Ruth called it. Her grandson Travis had to sleep on the couch, and all... Show more

Suddenly, things changed, and Walter and his family came into quite a bit of money. Walter s
mama got a check for ten thousand dollars from her husbands life insurance after he passed
away, which was a lot of money in that period of time. A nice house or a liquor store could easily
be bought with half of the money from the check. Since the check was actually written out to
mama, the money was all technically hers, so all that she wanted to do with it was buy her new
house for her family, but stubborn Walter, he wanted his liquor store, and would stop at nothing
to get it. When he finally realized that his mama was never going to give him the money to get
the liquor store, he took it upon himself to get it himself. He eventually stole a portion of his
mama s money to get the store, but he was taken for a fool when the other person that he was
making a deal with, stole all of his money. Now he had nothing, and mama had only some of her
money.
He finally realized that he had been wrong all along, and that he should have done what was best
for his family before he tried to benefit from the money for himself. This part of a poem by
Langston Hughes best describes his dreams: What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun... . That is exactly what happened to Walter s dream, it just sat there and
dried up like a raisin in the sun because he did nothing about it until he

4. Women s Rights In The 20th Century
Throughout history, political and social life were all controlled and regulated by men. As a result
women often lived their life in silence and were banned from participating in their society.
However, from the start of the 20th century, this cycle of white male dominance was quickly
challenged by various minority groups. The Women s Rights Movement, Gay Liberation
Movement, and the African American Civil Rights Movement to name a few all demanded basic
human rightsand to be treated equally as their straight white male counterpart. In 1977, Harvey
Milk, a gay rights activist, became the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in
California (he won a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors). About year later, on June
25, 1978, he gave a powerful speech on the steps of the San Francisco City Hall demanding
equality not only for the LGBTQ community but for everyone. Similarly, on September 5, 1995,
Hillary Clinton, the First Lady at the time, transformed the world as she delivered a moving speech
on women s rights. It was at the U.N 4th World Conference On Women, where she uttered the
famous line, Let it be that human rights are women s rights and women s rights are... Show more

To what extent do WMDs and their proliferation present a threat to global security and what are
possible solutions? Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction and Threats to Global Security
The proliferation of weapons of mass destruction is one of the foremost threats challenging global
security today. The United States should take an offensive strategy and re emphasize its nuclear
program due to the current affairs around the globe and the growing threat of the use of weapons
of mass destruction against our citizens, allies and vital interests. The existing arms control
agreements, such as the 1968 Non Proliferation Treaty and the prohibition of biological weapons

Movement of illegal imports and the exchange of money can be completed with virtually no
restrictions depending on the place and time due to relaxed import and export laws, lack of
enforcement controls, and electronic system networks. Furthermore, many governments seem to be
unwilling or unable to implement control over the development, storage, or use of these weapons.
More problematic are the shifting ideologies and international relationships that have occurred over
the decades following the cold war. Today there is little doubt terrorist groups or states would use
weapons of mass destruction to further their interests if they were available. The 9/11 Commission
Report documented that Usama bin Laden in an interview with ABC television had called for
Muslims to kill Americans without regard to their status claiming all Americans were targets. He
had also attempted to purchase weapons grade enriched uranium for over $1.5 million dollars in an
effort to make an atomic bomb. Although the material later turned out not to be uranium, it clearly
indicated the terrorist s intent to discharge nuclear weapons without regard to the subsequent fallout
of loss of lives, environmental or economic impacts worldwide.[footnoteRef:2] According to
Frederick Mattis, in Banning Weapons of Mass Destruction, nuclear weapons are still considered to

The lesson that I personally found to be the most interesting was lesson one, which was to
empathize with your enemy. This is a lesson that should always be used, yet so rarely is.
Throughout history it could have prevented so much bloodshed, and when utilized correctly, it did
successfully prevent unneeded death. In the Fog of Warfilm, this lesson is shown in two different
ways. One way in which it is successfully used and another way in which it is not used. Empathy
was used in the Cuban Missile Crisis. The President of the United Statesand his advisors attempted
to get inside the head of the Russians. By empathizing with them, they were able to come to the
conclusion that no one wanted to go to a nuclear war and that it could be

8. Zen Cultural Stereotypes
Most of the time when I am exploring a different environment, my coping skills used for this type
of endeavor require me to be patient, open minded, and self aware. As expressed earlier, I had to
leave my enclosed bubble and try something different from my normal routine, which in fact guided
me to a new path of consciousness.
My previous perceptions and stereotypes of the Zen culture was totally wrong. In my misguided
illusion, I had envisioned a rigid and closed pseudo philosophy, limited to just Asian culture and
martial arts; shrouded in mystery. I guess this was my first impression, especially since I grew up
watching a lot of martial arts movies during the early 80 s (Kung Fu theater, channel 5). In fact, the

9. The Importance Of Happiness In My Life
Happiness to me is the feeling freedom after finally being out of debt; to be able to focus on
school instead of working 40+ hours a week. Happiness is proving all the people who doubt me
and lack faith in the fact that I m making it. Happiness is getting to buy some pants, and socks and
not worry about not having enough money to eat for the next two weeks. Happinessis making a
stranger smile; filling their empty bellies. Happiness for me is relief; a weight falling off my
shoulders letting content and joyflow in through my body. Little things make me happy; the
cigarette after a long shift at work, the full night of sleep, a shower after a fifteen hour day.
My lowest point was when I was homeless; I had just started my job and gotten out of an
abusive relationship. I made it somewhere safe and I found some stability. The thing that made
me the happiest lately was the bonuses I got from work; it wasn t a lot but it gave me hope for my
future. Being a realist has really helped me to avoid disappointment and being taken advantage of.
Being ambitious has gotten me as far as I am. I would say I am a realist versus a dreamer because
of how often I was let down and mistreated growing up; ambitious versus content because I know
there s a lot more I have to do and I know I am going to die any year, month, week, day, and time
and I would have a lot of regrets if all I did was settle for the life I have.

10. Egoism Vs Altruism Essay
The ethical debate between Egoism and Altruism was extremely interesting to read about. I truly
had an aha moment because this debate is a topic that is rarely tackled or approached from the
perspective that being selfish is not a bad thing. At first, I thought this argument against altruism
was insane, however, once I tried to think of examples that prove its insanity I thought of nothing.
This is when I came to the conclusion that yes, whether its selfishness or selflessness, both have
different meanings to different people. Laurena Becker, in her article Encyclopedia of Ethics,
mentioned that one of the definitions for selflessness is a regard for the well being of others for its
own sake (35). I believe this is the definition that most people refer to. For example, when we think
about a sister staying up all night to take care of her younger sibling whose sick, we tend to say
aww, she s so sweet and selfless . However, can we even say that a sibling is selfless for taking care
of her own sibling? A part of me views that as being her job as an older sister while another part
of me also views this as being a kind gesture; and in actuality it may be a little bit of both. This
aspect interferes with Rand s statement, in the book Objectively... Show more content on

unethical because no harm is being done. The person is not only going to feel more satisfied with
themselves but would also be doing those who are less fortunate a favor. Although this may seem a

the CIEE Summer Korean studies will allow me to visit Korean organizations, temples, museums,

I strongly feel that it is important to value and respect all countries and their cultures. Therefore, I
am aiming for students on my campus to have more exposure to Asian countries. Also, as the Vice
President of All Students Interested in Asia, I have the responsibility of informing them about
Asian countries and their traditions. After this abroad program, I hope to broaden their perspectives
on South Korean culture by demonstrating its distinct, unique characteristics. I aspire to enlighten
people with my studying abroad experience in hopes of gaining respect for different Asian
cultures. It would also be incredible if sharing my experience can help others find their passion in

12. Character Analysis Essay On The Catcher In The Rye
Holden Caulfield, the protagonist and main character of The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger,
seems to have many dislikes and much fewer likes about life, as a whole. In many situations
throughout the book, Holden seems to have negative thoughts about every little thing. From his
school, Pencey Prep, to movies or actors; even to the word grand, Holden seemingly holds a distaste
in just about anything that crosses paths with him. However, further into the novel, it becomes
apparent that one of the causes Holden holds dearest to his heart is to keep the innocence of
children for as long as possible. Holden wants to be the catcher in the rye because one of the
things he loves is young kids and the catcher saves them. Holden didn t seem to care about much
in the world, but near the end kids seemed to be what he adored most. He cared about them and
knew what to do to take care of them. The thingwith kids is, if they want to grab for the gold ring,
you have to let them do it, and not say anything. If they fall off, they fall off, but it s bad if you say
anything to them. (Salinger, 211) From this quote Holden is explaining to us how to interact with
kids. He is saying let them fail at something so they can learn the lesson rather than telling them...

It s a Christmas Classic, Charlie Brown!
A Charlie Brown Christmas is one of many prime time television specials based on the comic strip;

pessimistic protagonist, Charlie Brown. It s the Christmas season, and everyone in his town is in a

that he should try directing their neighborhood Christmas play.
This particular special has obtained phenomenal praise from audiences and critics alike. It s even
the second longest running Christmas special of all time. Although, does this film really deserve the

Clapton then left the Bluesbreakers in 1966 in order to start his own band, Cream, with bassist
Jack Bruce and drummer Ginger Baker. Clapton wished to start a musical revolution and change
what people thought about music, with which he succeeded. His band very quickly became on
of the most prominent bands of the 60s, even beginning to be compared with the all time greats
of the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. However, because of arguing egos among the band
members and drug use in all of them, they broke up in 1969. Clapton, however, got back together
with Baker and with bassist Rich Green and Traffic s Steve Winwood to record one album as
Blind Faith, rock s first supergroup . They released one cd and went on a 24 city tour in
America, the stress from which caused the band to break up not even one year after it was

which time he was influenced the most. He was involved in a complicated love triangle with his

21. Homeland Generation Research Paper
The Homeland Generation. The Post Millennials Name is Now Official
The White House recently released a report where they labeled the youngest generation the
Homeland Generation. A storm of speculations immediately hit the internet. How could the U.S.
government choose such a paranoid and xenophobic sounding name? Was this a creepy joke? Some
claimed the White House took the name out of thin air. Others accused the government of
deliberately spreading shivers of Orwellian terror. Others again implied the White House took the
name from the Showtime political series with the same name; not bothering to find out the
generational moniker predates the TV series Called Homeland by almost a decade!
In post Snowden America, it is not surprising that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When removed from social theory, generational nicknames have an uncanny tendency to be
launched right in time for the release of a new gadget, new report or a new TED talk. Nobody
expects a baby to live up to its name, something baby Lucifer and little Havoc will be pleased to
learn. But generations are different. Naming them before we learn their true character traits is
tantamount to label a piece of art that has not yet been completed. Creative wordsmiths will
continue to use new monikers; at least until this young generation one day decides to name itself.
This youngest generation is already rich with names, yet so poorly understood as a cohort of more
than tiny consumers. Over the last few years at least half a dozen suggestions from the plain
Generation Z, to the more specific iGeneration, Plurals, Posts or Wii Generation have been
suggested. I believe lack of scope in the underlying research is why these suggestions seem myopic
to the field of study or even anachronistic. At least to futurists who are used to thinking of the future
as more complex than mere extensions of the present. These names run the risk of becoming naГЇve

22. Blindness By Jose Saramago
The novel Blindness by Jose Saramago uses an epidemic of blindness as the means to illustrate the
fault in humanity. Blindness in this sense can hold countless differing meaning and values thus
making it a prime literate and metaphoric choice to portray his message rather than any other
epidemic. The definition of blindnessare 1 Sightless; having less than 1/10 of normal vision in the
more efficient eye when refractive defects are fully corrected by lenses; 2 Unable or unwilling to
discern or judge . Although within the book the form of blindness is in the medical context of lost
of vision, the author carries through his underlying message according to the second definition of
blindness. Metaphorically the author may have intended to portray the ignorance of society and
how being individually oriented may leave us blind to the problems we create.
For one within the book one of the main characters: the doctor states Fighting has always been a
form of blindness. Through the doctor s speech the author depicts that the epidemic of blindness
arguably allowed them to see that they actually had been blind all along. The fact that we humans
can argue, fight and kill each other in a sense leaves us blind since we are unable to see another
person s view resulting in fight. Thus in lament terms the unwillingness to view ... Show more

Years ago, spies were deployed by various candy rivals and many of Wonka s secret recipes were
stolen. Unsure of who was responsible for the betrayal, Wonka fired all the workers and closed
the doors to his factory. Not long after, the factory again started churning out chocolate, but no
one ever went in or out of the factory. Now, years later, Willy Wonka has decided to reveal the
mysteries of the factory to five lucky children. Entrance will be granted to these children in the

25. A Very Brief History Of Beeswax Candles
Many candles have been used for hundreds and thousands of years and ever since the 1900 s it
has been the only source of light. Present, not many people use candles for their main light
source. Some reasons why some people use candles is for decorations, religious ceremonies, and
to celebrate other people s birthdays. In past years most candles were made from tallow. Tallow
came from cows and sheep, in the earlier times of the Egyptians and the Roman s. These early
candles didn t burn well and normally smelled worse. The Roman Empire was the first to provide
evidence of a candlethat resembles the candle today. They melted the tallow until it was a liquid
and poured it over fibers of flax, hemp, and cotton, which were used as a wick. These candles
were used in religious ceremonies as well as lighting for their travels and houses.
In the earlier ages beeswax was used to make candles. These beeswax candles were made much
like the Romans made the candles out of tallow. Beeswax was a drastic improvement from the
tallow, but limited quantities were available. This made it expensive, limiting beeswax candles to
clergy and the upper class. Today, candles are mostly made from materials such as wax, paraffin
wax, beeswax or soy among other products. Some candles are also made from plant waxes or
tallow while others are made from a mixture of paraffin and plastic. Most people would say that
the size, shape or color would be the most important part of a candle, but most

26. Analyzing Richard Branson Essay
For the purposes of our assignment I will attempt to put Richard Branson in a sort of box that he
would surely object to and would certainly pop out of like a jack in the box. The difficulty with
attempting to analyze the leadership style of Branson is that everything that has been written about
him prefaces his achievement with his larger than life personality. There s no denying that Branson
is fun and passionate, but he s also very bright and very hardworking. I think that if Branson took
the Myers Briggs Type Indicator Profile he would discover that he is ENTP: an extroverted,
intuitive, thinking, perceiving human being. From his autobiography, Losing My Virginity it s
clear that Branson is action oriented, enthusiastic and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
and someone s passing on an idea in a drunken slur. Good ideas come from people everywhere,
not [only] in the boardroom. One might also argue that his extroversion is also well documented
from his hot air balloon rides to the very name he selected to represent his brand. A brand name
like Virgin demands recognition just for the name itself and I m sure in 1970 s England it drew
the attention. Virgin seems to have a knack for doing things in a sort of fun way no matter what
the product. When you think of Virgin Mobile, you think about how easy they made it for
anyone (everyone) to have cell service. Similarly, Virgin Atlantic seems to make travel for
anyone easier and a possibility by offering lower fares to many destinations. You imagine a
younger hip executive flying Virgin Atlantic, while a stodgier older executive would fly British
Airways. Even ventures that failed, such as Virgin Vodka, still conjure up the idea of fun. It s
become a way of life brand . In Good to Great, Collins discusses how Philip Morris found success
when it diversified away from tobaccos by staying close to sinful products such as coffee,
chocolates and beer. In a similar way, Virgin has branded its easy, fun, energetic way about doing
things. We even joked in class that a Virgin bank might be the fun bank to transact business.

28. Flash Drive Advantages And Disadvantages
What is a USB Flash Drive? The term USB stands for Universal Serial Bus and is used to define
a special kind of connection between a computer and other electronic devices. The connections
can serve different purposes ranging from power supply to communication. A USB flash drive
is a storage device that acts as a portable hard drive, but generally has a much more limited
capability in comparison. As mentioned, their purpose is to store digital information and to
transfer information between systems. Other popular names used for these devices include;
USB drive, USB stick, thumb drive and memory stick. Advantages of using USBs (at least 4)
USBs have an assortment of advantages associated with them. They are extremely portable,
allowing for information to be easily carried around and relocated. This can go a long way for
jobs and school projects, as it allows work to be taken home for further use. Another great
advantage is their ease of use, as they are extremely simple to use and are extremely fast at
storing information. This could come in handy in emergencies where information needs to be
saved urgently. An example of this, although extreme, would be in the case of an evacuation,
whether that is a fire or some other emergency. This work could quickly be stored onto a USB so
it is saved. USBs are also extremely compatible, as most modern computers are designed to include
USB access. This allows an almost universal transferability of information between computers,

29. Corruption Of Independence In William Bradbury s...
Montag gained a further understanding of what independence meant from this example. Soon
after that initial conversation, Clarisse and Montag have another shocking conversation.
Clarisse questions Montag s occupation and why he is a firefighter, which upsets him, and
makes him uncomfortable. On page 23, Clarisse states, How did it start? How did you get into
it? How did you pick your work and how did you happen to think to take the job you have? You
re not like the others. I ve seen a few; I know. When I talk, you look at me. When I said
something about the moon, you looked at the moon, last night. The others would never do that.
The others would walk off and leave me talking. Or threaten me. No one has time anymore for
anyone else. You re one of the few who put up with me. That s why I think it s so strange you re
a fireman, it just doesn t seem right for you, somehow. Clarisse deeply questions Montag s
behavior, and exposes his potential independence. She asks about why he chose the work that he
did, followed by her interpretation of Montag. She notices that Montag listens to her, and that he
does things that other firemen don t do. He respects Clarisse, and lets her speak her mind. Clarisse
mentions that he is different from the others, and this is very important. He was independent, and

fellow book burners. When Clarisse mentioned that he was unusual, it was

30. The Reflection Of Achieving College Success In College
Achieving College Success has been a very positive journey for me. Prior to the course, I was
mostly a positive thinker, and had overcome several things in my life. However, the class
provided me with strategies useful in pushing forward in all life circumstances. Many negative
thoughts run through my head, as is true for everyone else. It was important to know how to
control them and use my negative experiences to better myself. I also learned how to set positive
goals that will positively benefit me, and to set a deadline to achieve my goals. I feel much more
organized and confident after taking this course. I feel like I can face anything and come out of it
with a positive take away or goal, and building off every experience will always be a goal now.
This class gives great advice for achieving success in all major life goals. The main, and probably
most important concept I learned was the Creator idea. This means that, When you accept
personal responsibility, you believe you can create everything in your life. (Downing, 43) I knew
I could create many positive things in the world beforehand. I had a migraine for over 3 years
toward the end of middle school, and in the beginning of high school. I should have died at birth,
but was given a test trial medication that saved my life. I had childhood epilepsy that went away,
and I have a disabled mother and a dead sister. Perseverance and coming back from trouble have

31. Muslim Stereotypes Essay
Stereotypes often determine how we see people who are different from us. Stereotypes play
such an important role in our perceptions of others, but what exactly are they? A stereotype is a
widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing
(Williams, 2013). In essence, stereotypes are not limited to different races and ethnicities, but also
include: genders, social classes, cultures and even certain hobbies. In light of the increase of
negative attention that Muslims have been receiving in the media, the stereotypes discussed in this
paper will be centered on Muslims. Specifically, the stereotype that all Muslims are terrorists will
be analyzed. Since Islamis a religion that promotes peace and kindness, one could ask where the
stereotype that all Muslims are terrorists originated. Following the tragedies of September 11,
2001, Arabs and Muslims have been presented as potential terrorists. This idea stemmed from the
theory that, media bias increases when a specific ethnic, religious, or racial group is seen as a
threat to national security. (Stiffler, 2013). Since the attacks on September 11, 2001 Muslims and
Arabs have been hyper visible in the media as potential terrorists. Due to the negative media

32. The Treaty Of The European Union
On Thursday, June 23rd, 2016, the United Kingdom invoked Article 50 of the Treaty of the
European Union and voted to whether or not to leave the European Union. This June 2016
referendum, which is most commonly known as Brexit, had the largest voter turnout in the United
Kingdom since the 1992 General Election, roughly 33.5 million voters. The referendum resulted
fifty two percent in favor of leaving the European Union. The separation process is difficult. By just
agreeing to the negotiations to separate from the European Union, there has been significant
political and economic impacts affecting the United Kingdomand the rest of the world. The day
following the vote that favored leaving the European Union, the Pound, Britain s currency, went
from $1.50 to $1.28, the lowest it s been in over three decades (Kottasova). In an effort to not deal
with the EU negotiations, David Cameron, the United Kingdom s Prime Minister, resigned from his
position on July 13th, effectively ending his six year holding on the position. Brexit is an example
of when nationalism and frustration mix together and motivates a society to make a decision
possible which was unforeseeable prior. It can be deduced that the three contributing factors to the
success of the Brexit vote are Economics, Nationalism, and Political Elitism. Understanding the
history of the relationships between the European Union, political parties in the United Kingdom,

The LBC event I attended this weekend was, the play The Boy Who Loved Monsters and The

36. The Elimination of the Designated Hitter in Baseball Essay
The Elimination of the Designated Hitter in Baseball
Baseball is a simple game. You throw the ball. You hit the ball. You catch the ball.
At least it used to be that way until Ron Blomberg became the major league s first designated
hitter in 1973. Now, for a DH, baseball has become even simpler: You eat some cheese fries. You hit
the ball. You eat some more cheese fries. Fortunately, this less than strenuous regimen might not last
much longer. Baseball team owners have notified the players union of the possibility the DH will
not exist in 1999. The DH is a part of playing rules, and owners said they can therefore phase it out
without first receiving approval from the players union.
Bad news for players, but good news for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Worst of all, the DH singlehandedly creates Hall of Famers. Of the players who have reached
3,000 career hits during this decade, only Robin Yount did so minus the aid of the DH rule.
Neither Dave Winfield, Paul Molitor nor George Brett would have achieved that milestone were
their careers dependent upon their ability to play defense. Spectacular careers notwithstanding,
these players lifetime stats should be accompanied by asterisks the size of baseballs when compared
with those of their Cooperstown contemporaries.
Such a move by the owners would be good for baseball on even more fronts. The American League
s big thunder offensive philosophy has left the junior circuit totally devoid of the strategy that all
big league managers used to invoke. In the National League, managers play for the run. If the lead
off hitter gets on base, the No. 2 man bunts him into scoring position. An NL team can send half its
lineup to the plate and see a total of only six pitches from the opposition.
When was the last time you saw Roberto Alomar or Alex Rodriguez bunt? With their brand of
smash mouth baseball, AL teams play for the six run inning. A typical lineup card might feature
one hitter who doesn t bring the house on every swing. As a result, ERAs are higher, and games
progress more slowly.
Sure, AL games are longer, too, but

40. Examples Of Hybridity In The Bluest Eye
In the last season summer , Pecola becomes pregnant. Claudia and Frieda want Pecola s baby to
live in order to validate their own blackness and to oppose the universal love for white baby
dolls. The anger reaches Pecola to madness because Pauline also does not believe that Pecola is
an innocent sinister of Cholly s drunken rape. Pecola s schism has created an imaginary friend
for her because she has no real friend. Her imaginary friend represents an escape from reality as
the researcher thinks. The researcher shows that Pecola wants a person who will pay attention

Her lunacy is not an escape from the idealized forms of white life, in her insanity, she feels most
fully the force of white constructions of beauty, even as the normal flow of human interaction
and language cease to have meaning for her. Morrison uses painful irony to remind people that
Pecola s madness is a fault of her society. Morrison is influenced by hybridity in her novel The
Bluest Eye . Hybridity refers to any mixing of western and eastern culture , it most commonly
refers to colonial subjects from Africa and Asia who have found the balance between eastern and
western cultural attributes. According to Homi Bhabha, the third place is the place for
multicultural communities where injustice and oppression are executed. Morrison proves that
third place is a far place and no one can reach to this place easily. She also proves that Pecola
reaches to madness and could not reach to third place. In addition to, Morrison is influenced by the
idea of other and orientalism, otherness which is an approach that divides the world into two binary
opposites as white versus black or modern versus traditional. Morrison manages to apply the four
elements that involved the creation stereotyping which are generalization, essentialization,
oversimplification, and repetition. Morrison succeeded in showing the fixed image for pecola s
family that claims to reflect their reality without necessarily truly doing so as they are

41. The Bombing Of The Uss Cole
The USS Cole Attack We will never forget that 17 of our Sailor s died during a routine refueling
stop conducted by the USS Cole. The bombing of the USS Cole (DDG 67) and the subsequent
implementation of Anti Terrorism Force Protection measures are important to our Navy
heritage because it is a reminder that vigilance can avert future attacks. Whether in the maritime
domain, or in support of operations ashore, Senior Navy Leaders are a key player in ensuring
that Anti Terrorism measures are followed to protect yourself, Sailors under your command, and
all Navy personnel. This paper will cover the history of the bombing of the USS Cole (DDG 67),
the evolution of Anti Terrorism Force Protection and the effects upon current U.S. Navy
operations. History On the morning of October 12, 2000, during a routine refueling stop; the
505 foot USS Cole (DDG 67) was crippled and nearly sunk when two men steered a small fishing
boat towards the center of the ship, where they detonated a small plastic explosive device in a
suicide attack. According to reports, the amount of C 4 used in the construction of the bomb was
equivalent to 700 pounds of TNT (Ibarra, 2013). In the explosion s aftermath, 17 Sailors died
and 37 crewmembers were wounded; and a $789 million ship was severely damaged in an act of
asymmetrical warfare against the United States (Burns, 2000). In the days and weeks following the
attack, the Congressional Research Service (Perl O Rourke, 2001) put together a

42. Musical Analysis Gcse
The thing that makes musicals so different amongst other films is that it builds a story from
works of original music. I admire the ability to write a piece of music, but I admire it even more
when another composer comes in with the same piece of music and the sound comes out
completely different. In a way they enhance the sound and perfect upon it. Moulin Rouge is an
excellent example of this. The writers and composers combine elements of theater, opera, traditional
cinema, and numerous elements of pop culture to create an almost completely new genre of film. It
isn t about the weary and corrupt, but rather romantics, with bohemian ideals, who believe in a
more glamorous life who see the nightclub not as a shabby tourist trap but as a... Show more content

The tenor voice of Alessandro Safina sings backup vocals, as well as choral accompaniment of
the Metro Voices (Discogs, 2017). Satine sings a reprise of Your Song in the subsequent scene
to the actual Duke she mistook Christian for moments earlier. Her soprano voice, light and
feminine, performs with simple elegance. Heard in this scene is a combination of Marius
Devries composition of Meet Me in the Red Room and a stanza from Children of the Revolution
(IMDb, 2017). A more satirical and comical can can approach takes hold of the movie for a
while, highlighted by the frenzied and enjoyably devious medley called The Pitch (Wikipedia,
2017). Cleaver to touch on the Shakespearean style of putting a play inside of another play,
because it seems to be a use of foreshadowing, in that most characters die tragically in his plays,
just as Satine will die in this one. A very fast paced Spectacular Spectacular/ The Pitch uses a
combination of The Can Can, The Sound of Music, and Your Song, and appears to be the only
song not adapted to the film, because it features original lyrics, and incorporates the vocals of all
major characters in this very wildly hilarious performance (Discogs, 2017). This scene is scored
with an extremely warm piano performance by Armstrong. As Zidler is throwing the bait to the
Duke for The Pitch or Spectacular Spectacular, swirling from one side of him to the other, dashing
front to behind the Duke, all this to emphasize the Duke s confusion about what s going on and to

43. Television And Internet News Programs
News or Nonsense Television and internet news programs have began to stray away from a
strictly informative report of current happenings to vague, non factually based entertainment
stories. This is a direct result of society s desire to worry about everyone s feelings. In the past,
viewers passionately desired accurate information and statistics on the nation s current events.
As of now, a different generation of viewers and new s providers bestow the supply and demand
of news stories based on emotions, rather than fact. With extremist groups becoming increasingly
popular the demand for highly biased news is snowballing. New s corporations like FOX
capitalize on this by providing news that is consistently biased to one point of view. Having a
one sided production such as FOX creates a type of animosity between them and their
competition. This seems rather childish, making these top tier new companies look like a joke.
In result, a viewer will struggle to find a new s broadcast that provides more than a couple of
relevant stories based on factual information. Instead, the bulk of content is displayed in a look at
me, feel bad for me, or look at them format. From this, the broadcasters work at the heart strings
of their viewers. They get the viewer to invest emotion into a story, creating a reaction and desire
to hear, see, and feel more. Given the response, broadcasters see interest in emotionally based
stories skyrocket and interest in factually based stories

44. Module 11 Psychology
The More I Learned, the More Interested I got in psychology. Module after module I was getting
more and more interested. Unit 3,and especially Module 11 grabbed my attention the most. Module
11 discusses stages of memory and memory processes. This module answers the most important
questions: How our memoryworks? and How we are influenced by our memories? .
One reaction paper wouldn t be enough for me to share my thoughts and point the most important
parts of this chapter, but I will try to. The three stages model divides memory into three sequential
stages: sensory, short term, and long term memory (R.C. Atkinson Shiffrin, 1968) (Plotnik and
Kouyoumdjian 240).
It all comes to the point, whether you pay attention to information. Only if you pay attention to
information, then it will be transferred into the short term memory from sensory memory, otherwise
you would forget it. Now if you pay attention to the information in short term memory, then it would
be encoded and transferred into the long term memory. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

45. Juxtaposition In Crime And Punishment
In Fyodor Dostoyevsky s, Crime and Punishment, the conclusion of the novel plays an important
role in resolving and reconciling a multitude of conflicts within the characters. For Dostoyevsky,
the resolution of the story plays a significant purpose not only in resolving the various crimes
committed, but additionally acting as a moral reassessment for the characters that helps the
audience reflect upon their own morals as well. Accordingly, through Dostoyevsky s portrayal of
the troubling abuses committed by the characters due to their lack of regard for the law, a large
portion of the novelemphasizes the concept of a universal morality that should be intrinsic to
humanity. Through the analysis of the repercussions of Raskolnikov s crimes, Svidrigailov s
crimes, and the juxtaposition between them,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

for him to reintegrate into society. Raskolnikov s submission to governmental law when he

conscience not anyone else s. Consequently, the police arrest Raskolnikov and send him to Siberia

As we all know, Moses was perhaps one of the most influential characters in the Bible. With this
being said, Deuteronomy has become an interesting book to study in the Bible. During this
particular book, Moses is delivering the final speeches to the Israelites before they enter the
Promised Land. However, there has been a lot of controversy with the placement of Deuteronomy.
If we take a look at the book Numbers, the Israelitesare poised to enter the Promised Land. In the
beginning of Joshua, they follow through with this action. Also, there are many scholars believe
that the speeches of Moseswere written at a later time and then put back into his mouth. We can

The constitutional model is slightly different than the documentary hypothesis. By definition, the
constitutional model is the idea that the bible was once sacred document that has been modified
and changed over time. However, while this serves as legitimate source for how the Bible came
to be, it also contains fallacies. If we look at the book of Deuteronomy as an entirety, the amount
of authors it took to write debunks the idea of how it was one sacred document. Yes, the Bible has
been edited many times over the course of history, but it was never a single sacred document. The
Bible took years to complete and even after the writings were finished, there were many editors that
came together to put all the writings in their necessary places. With this being said, there are too
many inconsistencies within the constitutional model. Deuteronomy serves as a perfectly due to its
placement. While the speeches of Moses may be sacred, the placement of Deuteronomy
demonstrates that the constitutional method is not entirely correct. Moses was not the only author
of this book and his speeches could have easily been included in the book of Joshua or Numbers.
Overall, the constitutional method does make a valid case, but I believe it does not serve as a
convincing source to understand the many questions of

Shakespeare s Portrayal of Henry V as the Model Monarch In this essay I intend to show that
Shakespeare portrays Henry as the Classic Sovereign as he is patriotic, brave, cunning, religious,
natural leader in touch with the lower class of the country. I will use quotes and remarks in the
play to show this and present it. I shall firstly do a summery of the play and give a basic image of
what it contains, and then give a detailed analysis, which will give a more detailed view of
particular scenes to show how Shakespeare shows Henry s character and finally I shall make a
conclusion to present my evidence, to show that Henry is presented as a model monarch. The play

48. Impact of Foreign Remittances on Economic Growth and...
INTRODUCTION:
Remittances typically refer to transfers of money by foreign workers to their home countries.
Remittances are not a new phenomenon in the world, being a normal associated to migration
which has always been a part of human history. Remittances are playing an important role in the
economies of many developing and low income countries. Pakistan is a labour abundant country;
hence, as neoclassical theory shows, if workers are unable to find jobs and/or wages to satisfy
their needs, they will look elsewhere. Pakistan s history provides us with a new trend of emigration
nearly each decade. Remittance is an important source of foreign exchange earnings for Pakistan

During the last three decades, Pakistan received a significant amount of worker s remittances,
which are sent by millions of Pakistanis working abroad. For capital deficient countries, like
Pakistan, worker s remittances are considered to be an important source of foreign exchange. These
remittances have a positive impact on Pakistan s economy through improved balance of payments
position and reduced dependence on external borrowing. Significant flows of remittances also
helped Pakistan recover from the adverse effects of oil price shocks, reduced the unemployment
problem, and improved standard of living of recipient households.
Remittances in Pakistan decreased to 3863 USD Million in the fourth quarter of 2013 from
3927 USD Million in the third quarter of 2013. Overseas Pakistani workers remittances grew by

50. Differences Between New England Settlers And Chesapeake...
When the English settled into the New World, they were split up into two sections, the Chesapeake
region and the New England region. Although the English settled both, the two regions were
severely different from each other when they were brought about. The New England and
Chesapeake colonies differed in three ways: their reason for venturing over, economy, and
population. These major differences were what shaped our nation today and what will continue
shaping our nation in the future. When the Mayflower sailed over to the New World, on the boats
were Puritans that were looking for a change in the way that their religion was practiced where the
Chesapeake settlers came over for gold. Alongside the Puritans were the Separatists who... Show

The gold was never found and the passage through America was given up in hopes of staying
alive. Because the Chesapeake settlers were too interested in gold, they did not settle down and
get ready for the harsh winters to come; leaving them unprotected to the fierce winter. The New
England settlers were settles and ready, but they did loose a few men to the bitter cold, however
not as many as the Chesapeake settlers did. The economy of the two regions also greatly
differed because of the terrain that they landed on. Because the land in the south was much more
fertile than in the north, the southern colonies thrived in rice and tobacco, profiting greatly. In
New England the settlers could not grow anything in the rocky terrain and were forced into
fishing, building, and farming. However, not much farming went on because of the infertile soil.
In the Chesapeake slaves were also a main part of their economy. The slave trade made them
very wealthy because of their closeness to the West Indies. They would be shipped many slaves
and then use them to harvest their crops and plant their land. Soon, the slaves outnumbered white
settlers by about four to one. When the English sailed over to the New World, there were only a
handful of them, that is, until slavery was introduced. While New England was almost all white
English settlers Chesapeake was made up of mostly African American slaves. In New England, the

Not even a year later nearly every right of the Jewish people was eliminated, and hundreds of
thousands of Jewish people were killed or tortured.
Thankfully, the Jewish people and the country of Germany were liberated, and most rights were
brought back to affect, because of other countries helping. After the event of WWII the United
Nations was created, including Canada, England, France and others, it was created to make and
maintain human rights throughout the world. Sometimes the only thing that needs fixing is a new
government.
But war is not needed to improve and increase human rights in other nations. Even with out war
there are still nations and people without human rights; it just needs to be noticed.
There are many charities to help towards human rights that Canada contributes to greatly. Including
UNICEF Canada, Salvation Army Canada and Red Cross. These charities focus on mainly living
rights. The charities contribute mainly food, clothing and medicine. Those are only two given
rights. Although it is help for people to live their lives, it does not give them more rights, it is not a
solution to increase their human rights and protect them.
Lately Canada has done a lot with the United Nations in protecting human rights, including
communicating with countries and organizations to increase the rights of women and children.

By the end of the 21st century steroids will be permitted in every professional sport.
Professional sports can put as many limitations on what athletes can take but it will never be
enough. Many athletes will have enough money to overcome these limitations. They may still
get caught with the drugs but they have enough money to control the media so people won t see
what they did. There is only one way to level the playing field. The only way is to make steroids
legal in professional sports. In the article, Why it s Time to Legalize Steroids in Professional
Sports by Chris Smith, he says, Not only would the playing field suddenly be even for all
players, it would be at a higher level. I think that this is exactly true. Legalizing steroids would
make the sports more entertaining. Athletes in the sport will be able to play at a higher level.
Chris Smith also said, It also makes sense for professional sports to allow steroids from a
business standpoint. People will pay more money to watch the upper level athletes perform. If
steroids were legal it would make drug stores more money because more people would be
buying steroids. Not only will the legalization of steroids benefit the sport, it will benefit other
businesses as well. Athletes will have a choice of if they want to do steroids or not. There are
