Major Depressive Disorder ( Mdd )
Introduction Major depressive disorder (MDD) is currently labeled one of the world s greatest health
problems, with an estimated prevalence of 4.7% and the second highest cause of years lived with a
disability in 2010. The economic impact on patients with MDD is extensive particularly in patients
that do not respond to treatment. Severe MDD can lead to loss of productivity and increase mortality.
There remain several antidepressant treatments (ADTs) available to patients with MDD, but there is a
significant minority that do not respond to first line treatments. Secondary treatment options, including
changing the current ADT or adding another ADT to the treatment regimen, such as a second
generation antipsychotic. Currently, aripiprazole and quetiapine are the approved therapies in the
United States for unresponsive MDD patients, including the adjunctive usage of fluoxetine and
olanzapine. Their efficacy has been proven countless times in randomized controlled trials of these
agents, but their tolerability profiles has limited their clinical usage. Side effects fluctuate between
medications, but most regularly comprise of akathisia for aripiprazole, increased appetite and weight
gain for olanzapine fluoxetine combination, and excessive sedation for quetiapine. Weight gain can be
a particularly menacing side effect as it increases a patient s overall risk of metabolic abnormalities;
extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) which is equally linked with eventual risk of tardive

The Rite Of Spring And The Nutcracker Analysis
Listening to Music class has taught me a new way to listen and enjoy music. I have learned how to
differentiate the melodies, rhythms, and instruments in a song. It has also introduced me to different
genres in the music world, aside from what is usually played on the radio. I can now attend any
concert, listen to any genre, or watch any ballet and easily recognize the many specific aspects the
music being played has. Ballets are very interesting to me. The audience is able to enjoy the music
being played as it is telling a story, and being acted out through the performer s body language. In the
two ballets, The Rite of Spring and The Nutcracker, a great story is told in both referencing the many
great dynamics music has. These two specific ballets are written by different composers, and each one
of them have certain conditions they were written under. As well as different receptions, popularity,
and development. The Rite of Spring and The Nutcracker s differences has made some sort of an
impact in the performing world back then as well as now. To begin, The Rite of Spring was composed
by Igor Stravinsky. Stravinsky was born in 1882 near St. Petersburg, Russia. As a Russian born
composer, his music had a revolutionary impact on musical thought and sensibility just before and
after World War I, and his compositions remained a touchstone of modernism for much of his long
working life (Taruskin; White). According to Wikipedia, he is considered one of the most important

A Companion To Film Noir Analysis
They agree with Spade s plan and wait the long night until morning when he can retrieve the Falcon.
Spade during this time demands to know the full truth and Gutman is happy to comply. Thursby and O
Shaughnessy had a close partnership and would not give up the bird easily, Cook killed Thursby and
later O Shaughnessy s other partner, Capain Jacobi. Gutman tells Spade in secret to watchout for O
Shaughnessy for she is not to be trusted. By early morning Effie brings over the package, Spade places
it on his table, and like hungrey animals Gutman,Cairo, and O Shaughnessy rip it apart revealing the
Maltese Falcon. Gutman scrapes at its surface and discover it is a fake. Totally devastated, they realize

The dark allure of film noir is an artistic style all its own and a radical departure from conventional
filmmaking. In their book A Companion to Film Noir authors Andre Spicer and Helen Hanson state
that, deep shadows, clutching hands, exploding revolvers, sadistic villains and heroines torment with
deeply rooted diseases of the mind (Spicer, Hanson 8). Known as the very first film noir, The Maltese
Falcon, showcases all the primary elements that make up the genre such as the three main character
types composing of the wry private eye, femme fatale, and memorable violent criminals. Dashiell
Hammett, author of The Maltese Falcon, had worked for the Pinkerton Detective Agency which gave
him ample experience and insight into some unsavory characters. Hammett was breaking new ground
with his short stories and novels about cynical detectives. His influence greatly affected the genre to a
whole new level, as noted by Hirsch, Hammett chafed at the supposed limits of crime fiction, and he
introduced motifs not previously associated

Chinua Achebe s Things Fall Apart
Are men always supposed to be represented as superior and tough? The novel, Things Fall Apart is
about the tragic fall of the Ibo culture and main character Okonkwo. Reason why things fall apart is
due to the men within the Ibo culture converting to a new religion. Chinua Achebe shows that men in
the Ibo culture are expected to be superior, successful, and strong. Okonkwo is one man who
embodies all the traits of a successful man. Achebe also shows how unsuccessful men of the Ibo
culture led to things falling apart. The novel shows this with multiple events that happened in the the
book for example when Okonkwo the main character becomes successful by beating Amalinze the Cat
in a wrestling match and much more. In the novel men are represented ... Show more content on

Frms take a lot of hard labor in order to keep it stable. For example, Okonkwo has two farms and in
order to keep a farm in good shape, multiple tasks have to be done. The numerous tasks are: feeding
livestock, harvesting yams, and cleaning. Another example is when Agbala is telling Unoka, When
your neighbors go out with their axe to cut down virgin forests. They cross seven rivers to make their
farms (17). Agbala tells Unoka this because Unoka is an example of a unsuccessful man. Unoka has a
farm but the farm is so bad it doesn t even require hard labor.Agbala mentions other hard working men
so Unoka can probably motivated. The hard labor men do represents them as being hard workers. Thus
why men are represented as hard workers. How men are represented as successful is due to their fame,
titles, and amount of farms they have. For example, Okonkwo has attained all these three attributes to
be shown as successful. What really makes men in the Ibo culture successful is titles. Titles are
everything in the Ibo culture. If a man does not own a single title then the man is worthless. For
example, when Okonkwo, Had won fame as the greatest wrestler in the nine villages (8). Due to
Okonkwo s fame, he was being shown

San Joaquin River Restoration Project
San Joaquin River Restoration Project:
Irrigating the Valley
The San Joaquin River is the backbone of the San Joaquin Valley. The valley is not only the nation s
most agricultural area but it is also one of the entire worlds. Millions depend on the crops that come
form this luscious valley. The river has gone through many drastic changes over its illustrious lifetime.
Once it was a magnificent 350 miles long it is now one of the nation s ten most endangered rivers. The
river once flowed with enough water to support steam ships and a salmon migration it now goes
completely dry in some areas. The river does not have enough water to support itself any more and
must take in water from various other places, such as the Pacific Ocean which ... Show more content

Two of the projected plans include keeping things the way they are and allowing more of the water in
Friant Dam to flow into the river to bring back the former environment that was once there as well as
improve the conditions for west side farmers. The two plans contrast drastically with each other but
both have positive and negative consequences.
If the east side farmers have it there way they will continue to be able to produce crops and farming on
the east side will still be a possibility. The Friant Dam has been irrigating the east side of the valley
since 1944. Over 95% of all water collected at Millerton is used to help agriculture. It waters one
million acres of farmland and because of it in the last 40 years the farming on the east side has taken
over Southern California as the states leader in citrus farming, the value of this is 2.1 billion and it
continues to grow. Although the farmers would prosper the environment would still suffer and the
salmon run of yester year would still be an impossibility. The east side farmers argue that if there
water was taken away only about a quarter of the east side could be farmed without Millerton. Without
Millerton s water the farmers would have had to continue to pump their water from underground
aquifers and if that had happened those aquifers would have gone dry 60 years ago. If the

American Dreamer By Bharati Mukherjee Summary
American Dreamer by Bharati Mukherjee scrutinizes the problems involved with culture fusion and
identity. Within the essay, Mukherjee provides her story of traveling to the United States to expose
America s problem with the fusion of other cultures. Fusion, according to Mukherjee, stands as the
idea of multiple cultures uniting together within the context of a country under one supreme set of
ideals regardless of previous beliefs and cultural influences. However, both resident countries and
immigrants struggle to coexist with their conflicting societal influences. The refusal to accept cultural
differences provokes division within society. Immigrants refusal to appreciate a fused culture
promotes division. Mukherjee questions the idea of immigrants losing their culture for American
ideals: Parents express rage or despair at their U.S. born children s forgetting of, or indifference to,
some aspects of Indian culture, to that Mukherjee asks, Is it so terrible that our children are
discovering or are inventing homelands for themselves? (Mukherjee, 1997, para. 28). Many
immigrants experience anger when their children no longer hold the ideals of their home country. This
tension produced within the household hinders the unity within a resident country s culture and
encourages division within families. Using herself as an example, Mukherjee provides another
instance of anger directed at her from her own subculture: They direct their rage at me because, by
becoming a U.S.

many serious complications such as: peritonitis, sepsis, hypovolemia, and low H H due to excessive

was a great example of how an adverse event can go undetected until after discharge or when the
physical symptoms appear and start ailing the patient.

Today s Juvenile Court System Essay
Today s juvenile court system handles most cases involving those under the age of 18 year old. This
was not always the case and the ideal of a separate court system for adults and children is only about
100 years old. When looking at the differences that set juvenile courts apart, it is important to study
the history and see how it developed over time.
The movement to separate children from adults in the court system can be traced back to English
common law, just like most of America s criminal justice system. English lawyer William Blackstone
had a significant influence on the separation of Juvenile and adult courts. Blackstone s Commentaries
on the Laws of England, that was first published in the late 1760 s, was widely read and well regarded
by the founders of America (History of Juvenile Justice). In Blackstone s book, he identified
individuals who were considered incapable of committing crimes (History of Juvenile Justice). Two
requirement needed to be met in order for someone to commit a crime. First, the individual had to
have a vicious will , or the intent to commit a crime (History of Juvenile Justice). Second, the
individual had to commit the crime. Blackstone then when on to state that one group of people who
were unable to commit a crime were called infants (History of Juvenile Justice). These people where
not literality infant or babies, but people too young to understand their actions, and therefore lacked
the vicious will needed to commit a crime. At

support the experimental hypothesis is that infants do not dishabituate and because of their lack of

CBN Railway Company
Among some of the challenges that CBN Railway Company faces, this paper will focus on a solution
to overcome the inefficiency that exists with the maintenance of their equipment; namely their
locomotives. CBN Railway Company is also considering leasing locomotives from various sources,
unspecified. We will analyze some possible solutions and weigh the pros and cons of the possibility of
leasing equipment. These two challenges facing this company are causing the quality of customer
service to frail amidst an increase in business in the rail industry.

firms can have great success with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The fact that CBN has schedules to maintain and customers to satisfy through adherence to these
schedules tells the tale that CBN is in dire need of a good maintenance system. Through
implementation of such a system, they may also need to revisit the quality of expertise and leadership
within its labor force. Although they may go into a leasing agreement, a provision of the lease forces
them to still hold on to a labor force for maintenance of their locomotives. Whether or not they choose
to lease, this labor force must be elite in order to efficiently and effectively provide adequate service to
their equipment. The possibility of hiring on a Maintenance Manager to oversee and run the
maintenance department may be a viable possibility. Either way, the main deficiency of CBN seems to
be the lack of expertise or direction of personnel that maintain their equipment, therefore, investing in
maintenance leadership and expertise is a must for this company.
Best Interest for CBN
The main focus of any company is to be profitable. Profitability depends greatly on customer
satisfaction and efficient/effective systems within the company. Although being in the situation that
CBN is in, they must focus on what needs to be done in order to reverse the poor job servicing of its
customers. This needs to be a low lying fruit , so to speak,

The Effects of European Imperialism on South Africa Essay
The county of South Africa is an economically flourishing country and probably the most advanced
country on the continent of Africa. However the entire continent of Africa is probably the most
undeveloped part of the world. Why is South Africa so different from the rest of its continent? Karen
Politis Virk explains that it is because of South Africa s developed economy and diverse population
(Virk 40). South Africa has three main ethnic groups: African, Afrikaners, and the mixed race. The
Afrikaners and mixed races have many roots to Europe and Asia giving the nation even more diversity
and a culture melting pot. This set the nation apart from the rest of the African nation in which the

Gold was discovered in Transvaal and Britain wanted to help Transvaal after the discovery. Transvaal
was not economically strong enough to handle the new industry. Diamonds were also discovered in
the Orange Free State a few years earlier that Britain had wanted to help with (Lester 52). At first,
Britain sent immigrants to Transvaal called uitlanders to help the Transvaal people, also known as the
Boers, handle the new resource they had acquired (Oxford 111). Eventually, the uitlanders
outnumbered the Boers. Transvaal tried to make the uitlanders equal to the Boers, but knew that if
they were to do this, the Boers would lose their nation and Britain would take control. The British
declared and ultimatum to make uitlanders equal to Boers. Transvaal rejected the ultimatum and
declared one of their own: to evacuate British troops from Transvaal within the next two days. When
the British ignored this ultimatum, Transvaal joined with their ally, The Orange Free State, and
declared war on Britain in October 1889 (Lester 43). The South African War was a war of firsts. It was
the first war to have known concentration camps (van Heningan, Tool for Modernisation 2). The

Why Is The Tenth Amendment Important
The tenth Amendment
The power not delegated to the united states by the constitution, nor prohibited by it to the state, are
reserved to the states respectively, or to the people (10, Bill of rights). This Amendment was included
in Bill of Rights to express the balance power between the federal government and state government.
The amendment says that the federal government has only those powers given by the Constitution.
Those powers are to declare war, to collect taxes, to formulate business activities between states and
many more which are listed in the articles. According to the Amendment the power which are not

In contrast state governments have all powers which are not clearly prevented by the state or U.S
Constitution. Thus, states have extensive powers and can do things that Congress cannot do. For
example, states can require young students to attend school and drivers to purchase automobile
insurance. Sometimes the congress and the white house think that federal government can to whatever
the majority yearn. However, the tenth amendment clearly prevents the majority from doing whatever
they want. Thus, they gave the federal government a very limited list of powers and other powers
reserved by the states and the people. They also provided an elaborate system of checks and balances
to limit the power of the majority to inflict its will. The Founders felt so strongly about limited federal
power as a bulwark of liberty that they added the Ten Amendment as the final exclamation point in the
Bill of Rights the federal government doesn t have the right to destroy the rights of people by
assuming powers that it did not have, which is reserved by states and the people. (By George Landrith,

Gilgamesh Categories
As we look back in time, ages ago, humans had organized ways of living. Scientist have found that it
is easiest to classify their body into seven categories. These categories consist of urban focus, new
political and military structures, new social structure based on economic power, the development of
more complexity in a material sense, a distinct religious structure, the development of writing, and
new and significant artistic and intellectual activity. Each of these categories played a key role in the
effectiveness in which their societies were ran. We have been able to find evidence from as far back as
250,000 years ago. In the beginning the societies that developed up in Mesopotamia were
agriculturally centered. They were not very populated. At first we relied primarily on our own skills of
hunting animals for their meet and picking berries and plants along the way. Which forced the Hunter

Fiction, Between Inner Life and Collective Memory. A Methodological Reflection. François Xavier
Lavenne, Virginie Renard, François Tollet1 Introduction In the writing of their fictional works,
novelists often have to reflect on the functioning of memory, for memory lies at the heart both of inner
life and of human experience in general. It is indeed in the works of writers such as Marcel Proust or
Jorge Luis Borges that the best exemplifications of the subjective experience of memory are to be
found. However, from a strictly mnemonic point of view, literature provides more than a means of
reflecting on memory: it is also the site of the rebirth and construction of individual and collective
memories, which can then serve as a foundation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Memories were first attributed directly to a collective entity by Maurice Halbwachs in his epoch
making La Mémoire Collective (The Collective Memory).5 This sociologist claims that all memory
depends, on the one hand, of the group in which one lives and, on the other, to the status one holds in
that group. To remember, one therefore needs to situate oneself within a current of collective thought.6
As a result, Halbwachs concludes that there are no purely individual memories, i.e. memories that
would belong only to the individual, and of which the individual would be the unique source.7 We are
therefore not the authentic subjects of attribution of our memories. Several writers have attempted to
reconcile these conflicting on individual memory and collective memory. For example, Paul Ricoeur
argues that memory does belong to the realm of interiority, for we see ourselves as the true possessors
of our own memories.8 However, memory also involves the other and fully bears its mark.9 From its
declarative phase, memory enters the public sphere because a testimony is always presented to, and
received by, an other. Moreover, Ricoeur, following in the footsteps of Halbwach, asserts that peers
can assist an individual in the work of remembering.10 He therefore draws the conclusion that
memory processes involve both the individual and the group. Ricoeur thus differentiates among three
different poles of attribution of memory: there exists, between

Reforming Inequality Research Paper
Reforming Inequality Despite dipping below ten percent between the late 1960 s and early 1970 s, the
income gap in the United States has climbed steadily over the last fifty years. From its low point in
1973, the wealthiest Americans income share now exceeds even that which they held in 1928, on the
eve of the Great Depression. Experts have pointed to several potential culprits, including the
underrepresentation of lower and middle class citizens in legislatures, the shrinking power of
organized labor, the expanding power of organized business, and a tax system that seems to
disproportionately favor those at the top at the expense of those on the bottom. These factors vary
greatly in level of impact and the feasibility of potential solutions, ... Show more content on

No matter how effective a plan may be at the former, if it cannot succeed at the latter it will never be
implemented. Convincing enough voters to support the tax plan will be extremely difficult, due to
both the high levels of ideological opposition to taxes and the resources and organizational strength of
the measure s primary opponents. Per an April 2016 Gallup poll, 61% of Americans believe that the
wealthy pay too little in taxes (Gallup), so Americans at least agree in principle that taxes should be
increased for the wealthy. Additionally, by emphasizing elements of the measure that could appeal to
conservative voters, such as keeping money from leaving the economy, candidates could generate
crossover appeal to both conservative and liberal parts of the electorate. The chief difficulty,
ultimately, will be overcoming the formidable organizations those with a vested interest in keeping
taxes low can bring to bear. Just as they did in the 1970 s, business and financial leaders will marshal
their extensive capacity to launch multi faceted campaigns (Hacker 125), exerting pressure on
incumbent candidates to distance themselves from the new tax policy and organizing opposition via
advertising, political action committees, and donations. To counteract this disadvantage, candidates
must mobilize wealthy liberal activists sympathetic to the cause of tax

The Importance Of The Little White House
In 1921 at the age of thirty nine years old Franklin Delano Roosevelt contracted polio after he swam
in the water at a Boy Scout Camp. Shortly afterwards, George Foster Peabody told the New York
Governor Roosevelt a story about a young polio victim who was cured by swimming in the year round
88 degree Fahrenheit water at Warm Springs, Georgia (Minchew, 2003). President Roosevelt visited
Warm Springs forty one times, first arriving in 1924, and he continued to visit at least once a year
during his presidency. He enjoyed staying at Warm Springs so much, that in 1926 Roosevelt decided
to purchase the property from George Foster Peabody. In 1927 he turned the property into the Warm
Springs Foundation to help find a treatment for polio and invited many in the community to come
swim with him in the pools at the foundation. The Little White House was built in 1932 for President
Roosevelt so that he could visit the area more frequently and escape from his presidential duties. The
importance of the Little White House was that American citizens in the rural areas of Georgia were
able to rally around the new president during the Great Depression as he was seen by the community
as a friend rather than a politician. One of the most crucial outcomes that Roosevelt facilitated at the
Little White House was the development of the Warm Springs Foundation. This was the first
organization to start searching for a treatment of polio and it was also the sponsor of the March of

Reasons Why Urban And Rural Areas Are Interdependent On...
INTRODUCTION
Currently, most of the world s population is living in urban areas which have implications for land use
and land changes, use of natural resources, and the absorption of rural labour in urban areas. The rural
and urban interdependence means the flow of natural resources, agricultural commodity, money,
information and services between rural and urban areas. Moreover, the rural population is adopting the
urban style and behaviour or is becoming socially urbanized. According to Steinberg (2014) economic
development and natural resource use and as well as livelihoods bind urban and rural areas together.
These indicate that urban and rural areas have a symbiotic relationship, which makes them to depend
on each other. Thus, one area needs the other to function and develop. This essay will outline and
discuss the ways and reasons why urban and rural areas are interdependent on each other.
RURAL AND URBAN INTERACTION Source: Repp et al. (2012).

Detroit Tops Forbes List Of The Most Dangerous Cities
Detroit tops Forbes list of the Most Dangerous Cities this year for the fifth year in a row. What is
encouraging is that the crime rate in the Motor City actually declined last year, despite devestating
financial woes that drove Detroit into the biggest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. Crime affects
the people of Detroit and the city s reputation, employment, income and education. It needs to be
contained and reduced to make Detroit prosper and make the lives of the people living there better.
Detroit had 316 murders in 2013, a rate of 45 per 100,000 people. That s the highest rate among cities
with populations over 100,000. In 2013 Detroit also reported 14,504 violent crimes. That s also the
highest per capita rate in the nation, according to the annual report. The total is comprised of rapes,
murder, robbery and aggravated assault.
The number of homicides peaked in 1974 at 714 and again in 1991 with 615. By the end of 2010, the
homicide count fell to 308 for the year with an estimated population of just over 900,000, the lowest
count and rate since 1967. However, taken in context by population, Detroit remains as a city with one
of the highest rates per capita for homicide in the United States. In April 2008, the city unveiled a
$300 million stimulus plan to create jobs and revitalize neighborhoods, financed by city bonds and
paid for by earmarking about 15% of the wagering tax. Detroit Mayor Dave Bing and Police Chief

Leadership Based On Strengths By Tom Rath
Leadership Based on Strengths StrengthsFinder 2.0, written by Tom Rath, was a book I chose for a
purpose. Rath mentions that when we live within our shortcomings/ our weaknesses, we tend to live in
this world unhappy and unmotivated (Rath, 2007). In this paper, I will discuss some background and
major topics presented in his book. I will describe how his topics can be useful in nursing practice, as
well as my own practice. I will end this paper with a look into how his book helped me to grow in my
own soon to be leadership role. Background Tom Rath began working with a group of scientists in
1998 to start a conversation about our strengths (Rath, 2007). A 40 year study, led by Donald O.
Clifton, helped to create a language of common talents, and in 2001, included this assessment into
their bestselling management book Now, Discover Your Strengths (Rath, 2007). During their study,
they found out that people who do have the opportunity to focus on their strengths every day are six
times as likely to be engaged in their jobs and more than three times as likely to report having an
excellent quality of life in general (Rath, 2007, pg. iii). A major problem with this was a majority of
people were either unsure of or unable to explain their strengths (Rath, 2007). When developing
StrengthFinder 2.0, the ultimate goal was to build upon your true strengths which take practice and
hard work (Rath, 2007). Applying to Nursing Practice When I think about applying this idea to

The King s Theory Of Moral Development
Lee Lebensbaum Psychology 05/25/2016 The King Says This: An Analysis of the Self Through
Various Psychological Theories It is not easy being born a king. From the days of my humble youth to
the present, my path to royal prestige has not been a clear path. The trials and tribulations I have
suffered were only to develop my character. So, I say this: Am I the number one contender for
valedictorian? No, I am not. Am I going off to Harvard to become a lawyer? No I am not. But the one
thing that I am is something you jabronies will never be. Regardless after every failing grade,
regardless after every tragic event, after every sickness, I still stand before you today as the People s...
King. And I think you would agree. Here is my story. My life closely mimics how Kohlberg described
in his theory of moral development. From the first stage of his theory of moral development, I recall
following orders to the letter. The punishment and threat thereof were terrifying. Detention,
suspension, expulsion were strong deterrents. Raised by very strict parents, I listened and obeyed
every command. School was the priority, and getting good grades was the most important thing to
them. Therefore, it was the most important thing to me. But as I grew, I began to see conflict in what
my parents saw was right and what the teachers said was right. This lead me to stage two of Kohlberg
s theory of moral development that different people will have different opinions on what is right. I had

The Battle of Fredricksburg Essay
The Battle of Fredricksburg In the next pages I will explain why Fredericksburg was such a tragedy.
Why it was a big morale booster for the South, but a disappointment for the North? It all started in the
year 1862. General George McCellen currently controls the army of the Potomac. When it was
determined that McCellen was a bad general, in December of 1862 he was replaced with General
Ambrose Burnside. Within a week, Burnside decided on a campaign to the Southern capitol,
Richmond. He told his plans to Lincoln and Lincoln approved, but told Burnside the only way for a
win was to move quickly. Burnside split his group into three grand divisions, each with two corps.

Burnside had Generals Sumner and Hooker as his help. Burnside, Sumner, and Hooker were on one
side of the railroad with 10 regiments and on the other side of the railroad was General Franklin with
eight regiments. Burnside also had one regiment of engineers to build the pontoons to cross the river.
(See Map 1) While Burnside had been waiting for two weeks he saw how the Confederates were
positioned; even though the Confederates had the advantage he still believed he could win. The night
before Burnside was going to start building the pontoons, he sent a message to Lincoln saying, We
hope to succeed. So, on the night of Wednesday, December 10, 1862, the engineers started to build the
pontoons. However, another general from the South, General Will Barkslade, was right above the area
where the engineers were and whenever a soldier went to check on the progress of the pontoons, the
Confederates would shoot at them. Now that everything was off schedule, Burnside knew that the
Confederate general was getting ready to attack. So, Burnside ordered Brigadier General Henry to
take 147 heavy caliber guns and shoot at the Confederates at Stafford Heights. The shooting lasted for
an hour. During that hour, 70 solid shots were fired a minute and that firing destroyed the town of
Fredericksburg instead of the Confederates. General Barksdale was still there to intercept the bridge
builders and troops crossing the bridges. When Barksdale sent a

The Mythology of Puritains
In modern American mythology, the Puritans were characterized, by many Americans, as being
nothing more than an extreme group of dour religious ascetics who abhorred anything that had to do
with humor or sex. This image is fallacious. Furthermore, the Puritans were nothing more than another
group of humans who defined their own world with their cultural norms, and values. To better
understand the Puritans we have to expunge any mythology surrounding these people, and we have to
study them on their own terms through their eyes if at all possible through the written record.
The first major myth that must be deconstructed is that the Puritans were sexual prudes. Americans
believed that the Puritans considered marriage as nothing more than a necessary evil that was used for
only sexual reproduction. Moreover, many Americans believe that the Puritans tried to hide the
physical aspect of a relationship as much as possible. This stereotype is false. The Puritans held a very
different perspective about marriage and sex. John Cotton, a Puritan minister, stated Women are
creatures without which there is no comfortable living for man: it is true of them what is wont to be
said of Governments, That bad ones are better than none... for they are a necessary good. The Puritans
believed that marriage was a fundamental part of human life and that sexual intercourse was a
fundamental part of marriage. Another Minister stated that the use of the marriage bed is founded in
man s nature and

Free Will Essay
Many people in the western world hold very dear the idea of independence, that they can think freely,
choose freely, and express themselves freely. This all is connected to the idea of free will that many
believe is what makes us human. Many people cannot, however, define free will. There is always the
feeling that one can do whatever he/she wants. That is probably why this idea is such a pleasing
concept. There is just one serious flaw in the free will concept. People cannot determine everything;
there are some things, even before one is born, that determines who he will be in the future. Since
people do not choose their parents, or the nationality of their family this creates a serious flaw in the
free will concept. Now if people were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On another note, the Qur an is often wrongly interpreted as being based on determinism. This is false;
if a life of a Muslim was determined for him/her at birth there would be no point in him/her trying to
find out the nature of his sin, Allah would not have had to send prophets to teach his people the way,
because all their actions would be already determined by them (Gorjian 2010). This suggests that, as
far a religion goes people are free to do as they feel is right. This however does not justify the fact that
governments take away this freedom from their citizens. Governments taking away freedom from
their subjects can be traced back in history, and one the greatest examples for this would be the war of
ideologies known as World War II. Political systems are based on ideas like fascism which helped
Germans in their economic crisis, communism overthrew the Tzars in Russia which gave the
proletariat all the influence they needed, while liberalism promised freedom. This all seems perfect,
however, as it is all well known, there were flaws in each of those systems. Nazis under Hitler were
only nice to a great portion of Germans as they were trying to create the master race. All others: Slavs,
Roma, Jews were hated and discriminated against. In occupied Poland Nazis closed schools, denied
access to education, confiscated automobiles, (Cosby 2010) houses, land and riches.

issues discussed in the book Half the Sky. In this book, Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn
present us with the issue of the unjust and cruel treatment of women in today s world. Women
throughout the world are treated in unthinkably bad ways, but the majority of people are not even
aware of the suffering these women face on a daily basis. According to Kristof and WuDunn (2009),
Women aged fifteen through forty four are more likely to be maimed or die from male violence than
from cancer, malaria, traffic accidents, and war combined (p. 61). However, Kristof and WuDunn
(2009) also point out that if something dramatic such as a school shooting or bombing takes place, it
makes breaking news, and everyone is aware of it all at once (p. xiv). Plenty of women are being
mistreated every minute of

Political Cartoon Rhetorical Analysis
The political cartoon I chose was drawn by Henry Payne. The political cartoon depicts President
Obama playing golf. I chose this cartoon for many different reasons and I feel this relates to how I feel
about the current politics. I will show how this cartoon applies to the current situation the government
is facing.
The cartoon depicts President Obama holding a baseball bat trying to putt a golf ball into the hole
marked with a black flag which has the word economy printed on it. There are many balls surrounding
the hole on the green. Behind President Obama is a large golf bag almost larger than he is. The golf
bag carries the title obamanomics and behind the bag in the distance are spectators watching him.
The reference of president Obama golfing comes after last weekend when he and John Boenher, the
current speaker of the house, went golfing to discuss the current state of the economy and to work on a
bipartisan solution to the problem. The economy has become the most important political topic in our
current culture. In the cartoon we see many people watching as president Obama putts. This shows the
interest in president Obama being able to fix the economy and how important his solutions to the
economy will be to our nation. A common person who works a regular job can go and play a leisure
round of golf on Saturday. Being president all eyes are fixed on his actions.

The Coral Island Vs Lord Of The Flies
In a perfect world there is no war, no conflict, simply peace surrounding the human race, but humans
don t live in a perfect world. There is war, bloodshed, and acts of crime that no person should every
have to go through. World War II is regarded as one of the worst things that could have ever happened
on Earth. World War II is used enormously in literature especially in literature explaining the awful
effects of war. Some examples of these pieces of literature are The Lord of the Flies and The Coral
Island . The Lord of the Flies is one of most regarded tells of societies conflicting in a simplistic
version through the eyes of boys stranded on an island. The Coral Island , a similar plot to The Lord of
the Flies shows how even through the eyes of children someone can see the problems of conflict in the
real world. William Golding, the author of The Lord of the Flies strongly influences how the
characters in the story react to their horrible situation through his own experiences. All three of these

society will instead of try to get along through peace and compromise will instead venture for
hardship through bloodshed. The author of The Lord of the Flies is closely related to these same
hardships. William Golding was a sailor in World War II and saw death and all sorts of evil. He was

Descartes Was A Philosopher That Did Not Take Any Truth
Descartes was a philosopher that did not take any truth without questioning it. This is key in truly
understanding the world around us. A real seeker of truth must doubt everything once in their lifetime.
Without doubt, we have no reason. Without reason, we cannot hold any truths to be correct. Descartes
truly understood how the rudiments vested in us by an infinite power play a powerful role in the way
we live today.
1. What is your initial point of view?
My initial point of view is that in order to seek the truth, we must doubt. In doubting, we critically
analyze the reason behind our thought process. What exactly makes a piece of wax that piece of wax?
Is it even wax? We must doubt even the simplest of truths in order to reach a higher state of knowing.
2. How can you define your point of view more clearly?
I can define my point of view more clearly by defining truth and doubt. Truth can be defined as an
idea that holds certainty and be able to question and analyze. Doubt can be defined as uncertainty with
a questionable premise.
3. What is an example of your point of view?
An example of my point of view is in Descartes most noted wax example. We take into consideration
a piece of wax, which has a color, shape, size, and will emit a sound. Once we burn the wax,
everything changes. We don t question that it is the same wax, though. But why? How do we know
that it is the same wax? Descartes did exactly this, and concluded that what he saw he grasped solely

In 2008 the findings of the Public Health Agency of Canada estimated 235,315 investigations of child
abuse. This investigation stated that the primary categories of maltreatment includes physical abuse,
sexual abuse, neglect, emotional maltreatment, and exposure to intimate partner violence (Public
Health Agency of Canada, 2010). However, sexual maltreatment of children wasn t truly defined until
1974 when Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act provided us with a legal definition of sexual
abuse (Feerick et al., 2006):

CIS 2008 states that Sexual abuse contained nine forms: penetration, attempted penetration, oral sex,

abuse, such as is shown to us by McCoy and Keen when it comes to Florida s statute.
In Florida many different forms are included beginning with penetration, whether it be full or slight,
either done vaginally or anal, and there may or may not be emission of semen. Next, Intrusion into

Due to the unprecedented growth the larger pharmaceutical companies have gained leverage and

The rules are divided into sections and include guidance based on drug categories. Due to each person

consumers. However, it seems a bit unethical because the large pharmaceutical companies do not have
to share all of side effect information that may assist consumers in making its choice on whether to try
a product or to not try a product. Through various survey s it was discovered that consumers are under
the opinion that pharmaceutical companies need to have improved internal controls to ensure their
compliance with regulations. Due to physicians and pharmaceutical companies working together and
are dependent on one another there needs to be controls in place that would have an unbiased view of
the regulations. The government will need to continue introducing new regulations that will aide in
monitoring the relationships.

Maya Case Study Essay
Having read and researched Maya s case study the first question I asked myself was, what is an
Adaptation within the human body? My understanding is that an adaptation within the body is the
long term physiological changes in response to frequent training, allowing the body to meet new
demands and help in the additional stresses that are placed on the body itself. In the case of Maya, I
have studied the chronic adaptations of Maya s muscular and cardiorespiratory system as a response to
her three months training and indeed her target goal to return to her preferred sport of tennis. I believe
that although Maya would be training in the correct way, playing tennis again as well as the exercise
regime she has designed would enable her to return to a good level of fitness, and the standard that she
had previously played. Maya s exercise regime would enable her to strengthen her requirement and
aspirations to play tennis again. Training exercises when lifting weights is a result of the learning ...

Maya s resting heart rate would also decrease as her training progresses due to the circulatory system
being more efficient. Accumulating lactic acid is much lower during higher levels of activity, due to
the circulatory system providing more oxygen resulting in the removal of waste products faster.
Arterial walls become more elasticated which allows greater tolerance of changes in blood pressure.
This would result in respiratory muscles (Diaphragm/intercostals) increasing in strength thus giving a
larger respiratory volume, which would allow more oxygen to be diffused into the blood flow (VO2
max). This effect on Maya s body would lead to an increase in the number and diameter of capillaries

  • 2. Major Depressive Disorder ( Mdd ) Introduction Major depressive disorder (MDD) is currently labeled one of the world s greatest health problems, with an estimated prevalence of 4.7% and the second highest cause of years lived with a disability in 2010. The economic impact on patients with MDD is extensive particularly in patients that do not respond to treatment. Severe MDD can lead to loss of productivity and increase mortality. There remain several antidepressant treatments (ADTs) available to patients with MDD, but there is a significant minority that do not respond to first line treatments. Secondary treatment options, including changing the current ADT or adding another ADT to the treatment regimen, such as a second generation antipsychotic. Currently, aripiprazole and quetiapine are the approved therapies in the United States for unresponsive MDD patients, including the adjunctive usage of fluoxetine and olanzapine. Their efficacy has been proven countless times in randomized controlled trials of these agents, but their tolerability profiles has limited their clinical usage. Side effects fluctuate between medications, but most regularly comprise of akathisia for aripiprazole, increased appetite and weight gain for olanzapine fluoxetine combination, and excessive sedation for quetiapine. Weight gain can be a particularly menacing side effect as it increases a patient s overall risk of metabolic abnormalities; extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) which is equally linked with eventual risk of tardive ... • 3. The Rite Of Spring And The Nutcracker Analysis Listening to Music class has taught me a new way to listen and enjoy music. I have learned how to differentiate the melodies, rhythms, and instruments in a song. It has also introduced me to different genres in the music world, aside from what is usually played on the radio. I can now attend any concert, listen to any genre, or watch any ballet and easily recognize the many specific aspects the music being played has. Ballets are very interesting to me. The audience is able to enjoy the music being played as it is telling a story, and being acted out through the performer s body language. In the two ballets, The Rite of Spring and The Nutcracker, a great story is told in both referencing the many great dynamics music has. These two specific ballets are written by different composers, and each one of them have certain conditions they were written under. As well as different receptions, popularity, and development. The Rite of Spring and The Nutcracker s differences has made some sort of an impact in the performing world back then as well as now. To begin, The Rite of Spring was composed by Igor Stravinsky. Stravinsky was born in 1882 near St. Petersburg, Russia. As a Russian born composer, his music had a revolutionary impact on musical thought and sensibility just before and after World War I, and his compositions remained a touchstone of modernism for much of his long working life (Taruskin; White). According to Wikipedia, he is considered one of the most important and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. A Companion To Film Noir Analysis They agree with Spade s plan and wait the long night until morning when he can retrieve the Falcon. Thursby and O Shaughnessy had a close partnership and would not give up the bird easily, Cook killed Thursby and later O Shaughnessy s other partner, Capain Jacobi. Gutman tells Spade in secret to watchout for O Shaughnessy for she is not to be trusted. By early morning Effie brings over the package, Spade places it on his table, and like hungrey animals Gutman,Cairo, and O Shaughnessy rip it apart revealing the Maltese Falcon. Gutman scrapes at its surface and discover it is a fake. Totally devastated, they realize they were duped, Gutman takes back his money ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The dark allure of film noir is an artistic style all its own and a radical departure from conventional filmmaking. In their book A Companion to Film Noir authors Andre Spicer and Helen Hanson state that, deep shadows, clutching hands, exploding revolvers, sadistic villains and heroines torment with deeply rooted diseases of the mind (Spicer, Hanson 8). Known as the very first film noir, The Maltese Falcon, showcases all the primary elements that make up the genre such as the three main character types composing of the wry private eye, femme fatale, and memorable violent criminals. Dashiell Hammett, author of The Maltese Falcon, had worked for the Pinkerton Detective Agency which gave him ample experience and insight into some unsavory characters. Hammett was breaking new ground with his short stories and novels about cynical detectives. His influence greatly affected the genre to a whole new level, as noted by Hirsch, Hammett chafed at the supposed limits of crime fiction, and he introduced motifs not previously associated ... • 5. Chinua Achebe s Things Fall Apart Are men always supposed to be represented as superior and tough? The novel, Things Fall Apart is about the tragic fall of the Ibo culture and main character Okonkwo. Reason why things fall apart is due to the men within the Ibo culture converting to a new religion. Chinua Achebe shows that men in the Ibo culture are expected to be superior, successful, and strong. Okonkwo is one man who embodies all the traits of a successful man. Achebe also shows how unsuccessful men of the Ibo culture led to things falling apart. The novel shows this with multiple events that happened in the the book for example when Okonkwo the main character becomes successful by beating Amalinze the Cat in a wrestling match and much more. In the novel men are represented ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Frms take a lot of hard labor in order to keep it stable. For example, Okonkwo has two farms and in order to keep a farm in good shape, multiple tasks have to be done. The numerous tasks are: feeding livestock, harvesting yams, and cleaning. Another example is when Agbala is telling Unoka, When your neighbors go out with their axe to cut down virgin forests. They cross seven rivers to make their farms (17). Agbala tells Unoka this because Unoka is an example of a unsuccessful man. Unoka has a farm but the farm is so bad it doesn t even require hard labor.Agbala mentions other hard working men so Unoka can probably motivated. The hard labor men do represents them as being hard workers. Thus why men are represented as hard workers. How men are represented as successful is due to their fame, titles, and amount of farms they have. For example, Okonkwo has attained all these three attributes to be shown as successful. What really makes men in the Ibo culture successful is titles. Titles are everything in the Ibo culture. If a man does not own a single title then the man is worthless. The valley is not only the nation s most agricultural area but it is also one of the entire worlds. Millions depend on the crops that come form this luscious valley. The river has gone through many drastic changes over its illustrious lifetime. Once it was a magnificent 350 miles long it is now one of the nation s ten most endangered rivers. The two plans contrast drastically with each other but both have positive and negative consequences. If the east side farmers have it there way they will continue to be able to produce crops and farming on the east side will still be a possibility. The Friant Dam has been irrigating the east side of the valley since 1944. Over 95% of all water collected at Millerton is used to help agriculture. It waters one million acres of farmland and because of it in the last 40 years the farming on the east side has taken over Southern California as the states leader in citrus farming, the value of this is 2.1 billion and it continues to grow. Although the farmers would prosper the environment would still suffer and the salmon run of yester year would still be an impossibility. The east side farmers argue that if there water was taken away only about a quarter of the east side could be farmed without Millerton. Without Millerton s water the farmers would have had to continue to pump their water from underground aquifers and if that had happened those aquifers would have gone dry 60 years ago. • 8. American Dreamer By Bharati Mukherjee Summary American Dreamer by Bharati Mukherjee scrutinizes the problems involved with culture fusion and identity. Within the essay, Mukherjee provides her story of traveling to the United States to expose America s problem with the fusion of other cultures. Fusion, according to Mukherjee, stands as the idea of multiple cultures uniting together within the context of a country under one supreme set of ideals regardless of previous beliefs and cultural influences. However, both resident countries and immigrants struggle to coexist with their conflicting societal influences. The refusal to accept cultural differences provokes division within society. Immigrants refusal to appreciate a fused culture promotes division. Mukherjee questions the idea of immigrants losing their culture for American ideals: Parents express rage or despair at their U.S. born children s forgetting of, or indifference to, some aspects of Indian culture, to that Mukherjee asks, Is it so terrible that our children are discovering or are inventing homelands for themselves? (Mukherjee, 1997, para. 28). Many immigrants experience anger when their children no longer hold the ideals of their home country. This tension produced within the household hinders the unity within a resident country s culture and encourages division within families. Using herself as an example, Mukherjee provides another instance of anger directed at her from her own subculture: They direct their rage at me because, by becoming a U.S. ... This was not always the case and the ideal of a separate court system for adults and children is only about 100 years old. When looking at the differences that set juvenile courts apart, it is important to study the history and see how it developed over time. The movement to separate children from adults in the court system can be traced back to English common law, just like most of America s criminal justice system. English lawyer William Blackstone had a significant influence on the separation of Juvenile and adult courts. Blackstone s Commentaries on the Laws of England, that was first published in the late 1760 s, was widely read and well regarded by the founders of America (History of Juvenile Justice). In Blackstone s book, he identified individuals who were considered incapable of committing crimes (History of Juvenile Justice). Second, the individual had to commit the crime. Blackstone then when on to state that one group of people who were unable to commit a crime were called infants (History of Juvenile Justice). François Xavier Lavenne, Virginie Renard, François Tollet1 Introduction In the writing of their fictional works, novelists often have to reflect on the functioning of memory, for memory lies at the heart both of inner life and of human experience in general. It is indeed in the works of writers such as Marcel Proust or Jorge Luis Borges that the best exemplifications of the subjective experience of memory are to be found. However, from a strictly mnemonic point of view, literature provides more than a means of reflecting on memory: it is also the site of the rebirth and construction of individual and collective memories, which can then serve as a foundation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Memories were first attributed directly to a collective entity by Maurice Halbwachs in his epoch making La Mémoire Collective (The Collective Memory).5 This sociologist claims that all memory depends, on the one hand, of the group in which one lives and, on the other, to the status one holds in that group. To remember, one therefore needs to situate oneself within a current of collective thought.6 As a result, Halbwachs concludes that there are no purely individual memories, i.e. memories that would belong only to the individual, and of which the individual would be the unique source.7 We are therefore not the authentic subjects of attribution of our memories. Several writers have attempted to reconcile these conflicting on individual memory and collective memory. For example, Paul Ricoeur argues that memory does belong to the realm of interiority, for we see ourselves as the true possessors of our own memories.8 However, memory also involves the other and fully bears its mark.9 From its declarative phase, memory enters the public sphere because a testimony is always presented to, and received by, an other. Moreover, Ricoeur, following in the footsteps of Halbwach, asserts that peers can assist an individual in the work of remembering.10 He therefore draws the conclusion that memory processes involve both the individual and the group. Ricoeur thus differentiates among three different poles of attribution of memory: there exists, between ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

During their study, they found out that people who do have the opportunity to focus on their strengths every day are six times as likely to be engaged in their jobs and more than three times as likely to report having an excellent quality of life in general (Rath, 2007, pg. iii). A major problem with this was a majority of people were either unsure of or unable to explain their strengths (Rath, 2007). When developing StrengthFinder 2.0, the ultimate goal was to build upon your true strengths which take practice and hard work (Rath, 2007). • 27. The King s Theory Of Moral Development Lee Lebensbaum Psychology 05/25/2016 The King Says This: An Analysis of the Self Through Various Psychological Theories It is not easy being born a king. From the days of my humble youth to the present, my path to royal prestige has not been a clear path. The trials and tribulations I have suffered were only to develop my character. So, I say this: Am I the number one contender for valedictorian? No, I am not. Am I going off to Harvard to become a lawyer? No I am not. But the one thing that I am is something you jabronies will never be. Regardless after every failing grade, regardless after every tragic event, after every sickness, I still stand before you today as the People s... King. And I think you would agree. Here is my story. My life closely mimics how Kohlberg described in his theory of moral development. From the first stage of his theory of moral development, I recall following orders to the letter. The punishment and threat thereof were terrifying. Detention, suspension, expulsion were strong deterrents. Raised by very strict parents, I listened and obeyed every command. School was the priority, and getting good grades was the most important thing to them. Therefore, it was the most important thing to me. But as I grew, I began to see conflict in what my parents saw was right and what the teachers said was right. This lead me to stage two of Kohlberg s theory of moral development that different people will have different opinions on what is right. I had to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. The Battle of Fredricksburg Essay The Battle of Fredricksburg In the next pages I will explain why Fredericksburg was such a tragedy. Why it was a big morale booster for the South, but a disappointment for the North? It all started in the year 1862. General George McCellen currently controls the army of the Potomac. When it was determined that McCellen was a bad general, in December of 1862 he was replaced with General Ambrose Burnside. Within a week, Burnside decided on a campaign to the Southern capitol, Richmond. He told his plans to Lincoln and Lincoln approved, but told Burnside the only way for a win was to move quickly. Burnside split his group into three grand divisions, each with two corps. Burnside s division arrives first at Fredericksburg; when he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Burnside had Generals Sumner and Hooker as his help. Burnside, Sumner, and Hooker were on one side of the railroad with 10 regiments and on the other side of the railroad was General Franklin with eight regiments. Burnside also had one regiment of engineers to build the pontoons to cross the river. (See Map 1) While Burnside had been waiting for two weeks he saw how the Confederates were positioned; even though the Confederates had the advantage he still believed he could win. The night before Burnside was going to start building the pontoons, he sent a message to Lincoln saying, We hope to succeed. So, on the night of Wednesday, December 10, 1862, the engineers started to build the pontoons. However, another general from the South, General Will Barkslade, was right above the area where the engineers were and whenever a soldier went to check on the progress of the pontoons, the Confederates would shoot at them. Now that everything was off schedule, Burnside knew that the Confederate general was getting ready to attack. So, Burnside ordered Brigadier General Henry to take 147 heavy caliber guns and shoot at the Confederates at Stafford Heights. The shooting lasted for an hour. During that hour, 70 solid shots were fired a minute and that firing destroyed the town of Fredericksburg instead of the Confederates. General Barksdale was still there to intercept the bridge builders and troops crossing the bridges. When Barksdale sent a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 29. The Mythology of Puritains In modern American mythology, the Puritans were characterized, by many Americans, as being nothing more than an extreme group of dour religious ascetics who abhorred anything that had to do with humor or sex. This image is fallacious. Furthermore, the Puritans were nothing more than another group of humans who defined their own world with their cultural norms, and values. To better understand the Puritans we have to expunge any mythology surrounding these people, and we have to study them on their own terms through their eyes if at all possible through the written record. The first major myth that must be deconstructed is that the Puritans were sexual prudes. Americans believed that the Puritans considered marriage as nothing more than a necessary evil that was used for only sexual reproduction. Moreover, many Americans believe that the Puritans tried to hide the physical aspect of a relationship as much as possible. This stereotype is false. The Puritans held a very different perspective about marriage and sex. John Cotton, a Puritan minister, stated Women are creatures without which there is no comfortable living for man: it is true of them what is wont to be said of Governments, That bad ones are better than none... for they are a necessary good. The Puritans believed that marriage was a fundamental part of human life and that sexual intercourse was a fundamental part of marriage. • 30. Free Will Essay Many people in the western world hold very dear the idea of independence, that they can think freely, choose freely, and express themselves freely. This all is connected to the idea of free will that many believe is what makes us human. Many people cannot, however, define free will. There is always the feeling that one can do whatever he/she wants. That is probably why this idea is such a pleasing concept. There is just one serious flaw in the free will concept. People cannot determine everything; there are some things, even before one is born, that determines who he will be in the future. Since people do not choose their parents, or the nationality of their family this creates a serious flaw in the free will concept. Now if people were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On another note, the Qur an is often wrongly interpreted as being based on determinism. This is false; if a life of a Muslim was determined for him/her at birth there would be no point in him/her trying to find out the nature of his sin, Allah would not have had to send prophets to teach his people the way, because all their actions would be already determined by them (Gorjian 2010). This suggests that, as far a religion goes people are free to do as they feel is right. This however does not justify the fact that governments take away this freedom from their citizens. Governments taking away freedom from their subjects can be traced back in history, and one the greatest examples for this would be the war of ideologies known as World War II. Political systems are based on ideas like fascism which helped Germans in their economic crisis, communism overthrew the Tzars in Russia which gave the proletariat all the influence they needed, while liberalism promised freedom. This all seems perfect, however, as it is all well known, there were flaws in each of those systems. Nazis under Hitler were only nice to a great portion of Germans as they were trying to create the master race. All others: Slavs, Roma, Jews were hated and discriminated against. In occupied Poland Nazis closed schools, denied access to education, confiscated automobiles, (Cosby 2010) houses, land and riches. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The plight of girls is no more a tragedy than an opportunity (Kristof WuDunn, 2009, p. xviii). This quote does an excellent job of introducing the issues discussed in the book Half the Sky. In this book, Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn present us with the issue of the unjust and cruel treatment of women in today s world. Women throughout the world are treated in unthinkably bad ways, but the majority of people are not even aware of the suffering these women face on a daily basis. According to Kristof and WuDunn (2009), Women aged fifteen through forty four are more likely to be maimed or die from male violence than from cancer, malaria, traffic accidents, and war combined (p. 61). However, Kristof and WuDunn (2009) also point out that if something dramatic such as a school shooting or bombing takes place, it makes breaking news, and everyone is aware of it all at once (p. xiv). • 32. Rhetorical Analysis Of Henry Payne s The Political... Political Cartoon Rhetorical Analysis The political cartoon I chose was drawn by Henry Payne. The political cartoon depicts President Obama playing golf. I chose this cartoon for many different reasons and I feel this relates to how I feel about the current politics. I will show how this cartoon applies to the current situation the government is facing. The cartoon depicts President Obama holding a baseball bat trying to putt a golf ball into the hole marked with a black flag which has the word economy printed on it. There are many balls surrounding the hole on the green. Behind President Obama is a large golf bag almost larger than he is. The golf bag carries the title obamanomics and behind the bag in the distance are spectators watching him. The reference of president Obama golfing comes after last weekend when he and John Boenher, the current speaker of the house, went golfing to discuss the current state of the economy and to work on a bipartisan solution to the problem. The economy has become the most important political topic in our current culture. In the cartoon we see many people watching as president Obama putts. This shows the interest in president Obama being able to fix the economy and how important his solutions to the economy will be to our nation. A common person who works a regular job can go and play a leisure round of golf on Saturday. Being president all eyes are fixed on his actions. There is war, bloodshed, and acts of crime that no person should every have to go through. World War II is regarded as one of the worst things that could have ever happened on Earth. World War II is used enormously in literature especially in literature explaining the awful effects of war. Some examples of these pieces of literature are The Lord of the Flies and The Coral Island . The Lord of the Flies is one of most regarded tells of societies conflicting in a simplistic version through the eyes of boys stranded on an island. The Coral Island , a similar plot to The Lord of the Flies shows how even through the eyes of children someone can see the problems of conflict in the real world. • 35. Descartes Was A Philosopher That Did Not Take Any Truth Descartes was a philosopher that did not take any truth without questioning it. This is key in truly understanding the world around us. A real seeker of truth must doubt everything once in their lifetime. Without doubt, we have no reason. Without reason, we cannot hold any truths to be correct. Descartes truly understood how the rudiments vested in us by an infinite power play a powerful role in the way we live today. 1. What is your initial point of view? My initial point of view is that in order to seek the truth, we must doubt. In doubting, we critically analyze the reason behind our thought process. What exactly makes a piece of wax that piece of wax? Is it even wax? We must doubt even the simplest of truths in order to reach a higher state of knowing. 2. How can you define your point of view more clearly? I can define my point of view more clearly by defining truth and doubt. Truth can be defined as an idea that holds certainty and be able to question and analyze. Doubt can be defined as uncertainty with a questionable premise. 3. What is an example of your point of view? An example of my point of view is in Descartes most noted wax example. We take into consideration a piece of wax, which has a color, shape, size, and will emit a sound. Once we burn the wax, everything changes. We don t question that it is the same wax, though. But why? How do we know that it is the same wax? Descartes did exactly this, and concluded that what he saw he grasped solely with the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, sexual maltreatment of children wasn t truly defined until 1974 when Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act provided us with a legal definition of sexual abuse (Feerick et al., 2006): The employment, use, persuasion, inducement, enticement, or coercion of any child to engage in, or assist any other person to engage in, any sexually explicit conduct or simulation of such conduct for the purpose of producing ... My understanding is that an adaptation within the body is the long term physiological changes in response to frequent training, allowing the body to meet new demands and help in the additional stresses that are placed on the body itself. In the case of Maya, I have studied the chronic adaptations of Maya s muscular and cardiorespiratory system as a response to her three months training and indeed her target goal to return to her preferred sport of tennis. I believe that although Maya would be training in the correct way, playing tennis again as well as the exercise regime she has designed would enable her to return to a good level of fitness, and the standard that she had previously played. Maya s exercise regime would enable her to strengthen her requirement and aspirations to play tennis again. Training exercises when lifting weights is a result of the learning ... This would result in respiratory muscles (Diaphragm/intercostals) increasing in strength thus giving a larger respiratory volume, which would allow more oxygen to be diffused into the blood flow (VO2 max).
