Good evening ladies and gentleman. My name is Mergim Cahani, and I am the founder and CEO of Gjirafa.com
Gjirafa is a web search engine, and a news aggregator for a very targeted market, that is the Albanian Speaking people.
In a sense, it is more than just a search engine, it will provide access to information and internet services to people everywhere for everyday needs.
It is the Seznam for the Albanian Web.
There are over 12 million people who speak Albanian world wide, and cannot find the information that they need. One because of the uniqueness of the language- will see in a minute what I mean by that, and two, because some of the information is not available online, we will explore this as well.
This is a language map tree for the indo European branch.
Let’s look at the Czech language for a second. As you can see, the Czech language belongs to the family of Balto-Slavic, further divided into Slavic, and then West Slavic. In the same branch as Slovak, Polish, and a few others. Means these languages have similar traits.
The Albanian language on the other hand, is on a branch of its own. A few others are a branch on its own as well, but most of them are already are extinct. What this means for a search engine, for us, is that in order to better process a language programmatically (in addition to the statistical approach), one needs to understand how a language works
. Knowing that Albanian is unique does not give us any opportunity, but research in other languages, such as English or Czech in the area of processing natural languages (known as NLP field of computer science – Natural Language Processing) is vast. A rule applied in Czech can be easily modified to fit Slovak for instance. To date, the research of Albanian in this area has stagnated.
There are over 100 portals, but no single source that organizes this information and aggregates them in an easy accessible way.
Bus Stations. Take Kosovo for example: there are about 1,000 bus lines per day and not one single source that lists their schedule.
These are problems that people around many countries take it for granted. This market has been left behind. Gjirafa is here to change that.
We have a great team with diverse experience. Three founders have a combined over 35 years of relevant industry experience, four master degrees and a one PhD from world reputable universities. Some of our developers are young, creative, and highly energetic who can write code just as easy as I am talking to you right now.
We have access to local data and understand our market; user and customer behavior
For instance, in this market the data for the Bus Schedule does not even exists online. There is no current solution that provides relevant information to the market. Entering first will give us a competitive advantage.
We have developed and currently developing further, algorithms that are specifically made to process the Albanian language programmatically. Whether is stemming, parts of speech, or even now we are working on grammar and syntax rules in a heuristic way.
Competition is there. The obvious is the global player Google. But we are different. Or so do all say. But here is why: with Google, as the global player, the Albanian language and market does not get sufficient attention – one cannot advertise on Google targeting the Albanian words – Google does not sufficiently process Albanian words in terms of inflection, conjugation
We do the heavy lifting and go to each bus station and punch that data in our database, just so that at the end our users can benefit by being able to access such information at their fingertips.
Our paid marketing approach is using online, tv and offline mediums. Our research indicates an average of 55 cents per user acquisition on average.
Unpaid marketing channels we plan to partner with hardware retailers and internet cafes at first. We think also there will be a viral effect as being on of its kind product in this market.
Why payment? (As I said this region is a little bit behind in technology… people cannot buy products or services online. But there is a great demand for it… then we will provide an infrastructure for the e-shops and integrate it with the payment system… which will diversify our revenue streams and will have less effects by any macro-econominc fluctuations or changes). No more Facebook pages!
We have already secured investments from Business Angels, and I am still waiting answers from a few others. To execute our full plan we need a total of 1 Million Euro. Currently we are finalizing the first 150K from business angels. We have discussions with VCs and two strategic investors. If you are interested to be part the adventure please come and talk to me and will share more details.
Last slide.
Where are you now?
What are the next 2-3 big milestones?
