Flash Solid State Disks (SSD) installed inside a server have become the first stop for data center managers looking to solve various storage performance challenges. And their interest has not gone unnoticed. In fact, the response of the flash supplier community has been so strong that many IT professionals now feel like they’re ‘adrift in a sea of server-side performance choices’.
Join experts on the Flash SSD market from Storage Switzerland and Micron to help you sort through these choices and find the right solution for your environment. In this webinar, you will learn:
1. The Importance of Understanding the Workload First
2. The Importance of Selecting the Right Flash Use Method

4. Our Speakers
George Crump is the founder of Storage Switzerland, the leading storage analyst
focused on the subjects of big data, solid state storage, virtualization, cloud
computing and data protection. He is widely recognized for his articles, white
papers, and videos on such current approaches as all-flash arrays, deduplication,
SSDs, software-defined storage, backup appliances, and storage networking. He
has 25 years of experience designing storage solutions for data centers across the
US.
Doug Rollins is a Principal Engineer in Micron’s Enterprise SSD Systems Marketing
team. Prior to joining Micron he spent 17 years working in server system, network
appliance, and storage platform/data protection design and manufacturing. He is a
co-author of and was instrumental in the early development and validation of SNIA’
s SSD Performance Test Specification for Enterprise SSDs, has written and
published several papers and has taught hands on labs on SSD performance, and
is the named inventor in 13 technology patents.

7. Polling Question
Which of the following best describes your
experiences with SSDs?
❏ Read about flash but never bought an SSD
❏ Replaced computer HDD but not a server
❏ Been involved with one or two server SSD projects
❏ I work on SSD Implementations all the time
9. Understanding the Workload
● Why?
○ Enables optimal SSD selection
○ Determines which software to
partner with
○ Saves $$
● How?
○ Empirical data
○ Analytic Tools
■ Built into OS / App
■ Third party software and hardware
● When
○ Trending is Critical
11. Where Can eSSDs Be Used?
● Server
○ By far most popular deployment
● Array
○ Allows efficient SSD utilization
○ Dedicated to array
○ Most expensive to deploy
○ May require network upgrade
● Network
○ Allows efficient flash utilization
○ May require network upgrade
○ Limited adoption - typically NAS only
12. Server Side eSSDs
● Why Does Server Side eSSD Use Dominate?
○ Very cost effective
○ Surgical performance strike
○ No network upgrade
● How Server eSSD can be Deployed
○ SAS/SATA drive
○ RAID controller
○ PCIe drive or card FF
● Server Side eSSD Use Cases
○ Boot drives
○ Cache (with software)
○ Dedicated capacity
14. The Flash Within The eSSD
● Wear - Life Cycle Concerns
○ SLC vs. MLC - Does it matter?
○ What does matter in terms of wear?
● Reliability
○ Are all flash drives/modules the
same?
● Which Interface Should You
Pick
○ Is it about more than just latency?
