This article presents a special case of urban revitalization, a project in Amman- Jordan. It is located in the valley region of the city, and it is the culmination of the design efforts of a number of prominent Jordanian Architects. Ras El-Ein Development is special for the importance of its location as part of the memory of the city, and is also special in the general design attitudes and decisions taken by the designers and the responsible authorities.

Buildings of Ras El-Ein Development don’t conform to
any of the previous typologies; they present a new
typology within the site, as buildings of the project
are free standing in a huge open space, with all their
facades equally articulated (figure 7 C). Amman’s City
Hall is an explicit example of this typology with its four
almost identical facades. This typology of Free-Standing
Buildings in space is not totally strange to the context
of Amman’s valley, the ancient Roman Forum with its
Odeum and other free standing monuments is an evident
precedent of such typology that was able to emerge
and evolve within the boundary of the valley area.
Amman’s valley, is traditionally the most accessible region
in the city, where all the surrounding mountain routes
and stair ways naturally descended to; consequently,
it promoted many public functions along its history-
line that took different forms according to the spirit
of the era, the Roman Forum in the ancient history,
the Umayyad Mosque of the Islamic age, and the
ceremonial Faesal Square from the Emirate’s time, are
just few manifestations of this potentiality. The existence
of such open spaces within the congested area of the
valley added positively to the character of the region
and initiated a dynamic dialogue with the surrounding
areas. Ras El-Ein Development holds this virtue in being
primary large open plaza with few monumental buildings
on display.
