- Welcome! Thank you for taking time out of your busy lives to be here today. I am so in love with essential oils and want to share them with everybody, so I'm really glad you came! As many of you know, I am one of those granola types that likes to try to do things more naturally. I had heard a little bit about essential oils here and there but really became a believer when I used YL thieves oil and wintergreen oil to help heal a dental infection. After that I decided to try some other brands to save money but figured out quickly that you really do get what you pay for! So I really started consistently using the YL oils this past summer.
- Most of the information you will hear today came out of the Essential Oils Pocket Reference book by Life Science Publishing. Please do your own research and make your own decisions. This is for informational purposes and should not be used as a substitute for medical counseling with a qualified health professional.
- An essential oil is the aromatic, volatile liquid that is within many shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, and seeds and that is usually extracted through steam distillation. Chemistry of an EO is very complex and may consist of hundreds of different and unique chemical compounds. EOs are highly concentrated and far more potent than dried herbs because of the distillation process that makes them so concentrated. It requires a large volume of plant material to produce small amounts of a distilled EO.

- Effected by soil conditions, fertilizer, geographic region, harvesting methods, and distillation process. Please understand that you can't just grab something at a health food store and expect it to do the same thing that YLEOs will do. In fact, there have been cases where somebody heard that lavender was good for burns and used an oil that had been chemically altered and ended up with more severe burns. A pure, therapeutic essential oil should not have a expiration date. Each bottle of pure essential oil will have a different odor because its a natural product affected by where its grown, soil conditions, the season, etc. If your bottle always smells exactly the same, that's a red flag that its been chemically altered to get that consistent smell. - The sense of smell is the only one of the five senses directly linked to the limbic lobe of the brain, the emotional control center. Anxiety, depression, fear, anger, and joy all emanate from this region. An aroma inhaled causes the olfactory nerve to send messages to the limbic part of the brain, which activates thought and memory. Because the limbic system is directly connected to those parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone balance, essential oils can have profound physiological and psychological effects. In less than a second, a scent has the power to activate a number of physical and emotional responses.
- Synthetic air fresheners are full of chemicals like formaldehyde, which is the #1 cancer causing chemical and is found in candles and air fresheners. Instead of breathing in the chemicals, you could diffuse the essential oils to gain the therapeutic benefits. Diffused oils alter the structure of molecules that create odors, rather than just masking them. Increase oxygen availability and many are extremely effective for eliminating and destroying airborne bacteria and germs. Do not diffuse more than one blend at a time as this may alter the smell and therapeutic benefit. A single oil may be added to a blend. Make sure diffuser uses cold air and does not heat the oils. Other ways to diffuse: you can put EO on cotton balls for your car, add several drops to a spray bottle with purified water. Shake and mist.
- First let me say that EOs are not a magic bullet. I'm not saying that if you use these oils you will always be healthy. They sure do help, though! Come to your own decisions about when you will need to seek out a healthcare provider. For us, we will try a natural means like these EOs before heading to a doctor. And thankfully haven't needed to go in for a sick visit in quite some time. Start gradually and patiently find what works best for you and your family members. Each person's body is different. If you're used to pharmaceuticals, most of those will last 8-12 hours. With EOs, keep in mind that your body will metabolize the oils quickly, so you will need to reapply every few hours. Always keep a bottle of pure vegetable oil like coconut oil handy. This is also called carrier oil. You will need to dilute some oils because they are "hot" on the skin. If you do put an oil on that should have been diluted but wasn't and so you experience discomfort, dilute with your carrier oil. Do not use water! Water makes it spread and go in further. If you ever get an EO in your eyes, rub your carrier oil around the edge of your eyelid. The vegetable oil will work its way in there and dilute the EO. I've done it! Photosensitive: may cause a rash or dark pigmentation on skin exposed to direct sunlight or UV rays within 12 hours or more of application. Before you use an oil, look at the label on the bottle. It will say if it should be diluted or if its photosensitive. Essential oils may react with synthetic, petroleum based personal care products and other chemicals in your body. This is why we start slow. Essential oils do not cause skin problems, rashes, or eruptions on the skin, but they might seem like they are because they are going after the chemicals.
- So now we will get a chance to hear about some specific oils and pass them around so you can smell them for yourself. These oils are what Yl considers the everyday oils. Please don't touch the top of bottles. The information on each oil was taken from the EOPR book.
- It takes 170-250 lbs of lavender plant material to make 1 pound lavender oil It takes 3-5 years after planting before a lavender plant can be distilled into oil We use it topically for bug bites and skin irritations. I don't normally dilute this one. Great on the kiddos feet at bedtime and diffuse it a lot.
- Cold pressed from rind. Rich in limonene, which has been extensively studied in over 50 clinical studies for its ability to combat tumor growth. It takes 3,000 lemons to produce one kilo of oil, or 43 lemons to produce a 15 mL bottle of oil. Research by Jean Valnet MD showed that vaporized lemon oil can kill meningococcus bacteria in 15 minutes, typhoid bacilli in one hour, staphylococcus aureus in 2 hours, and pneumococcus bacteria w/in 3 hours. Lemon oil, like all citrus oils, will eat through plastic and digests petrochemicals. You must use a glass or stainless steel container for your citrus oils. Also are photosensitive so avoid sun exposure for at least 12 hours after application. I drink a drop in lukewarm water in the mornings to get digestive system moving and also drink it in our water throughout the day. Like to rub it along lymph nodes when they are swollen or feel we are getting sick. Also just started putting a drop in with my moisturizer at night.
- Highly regarded digestive stimulant. Jean Valnet MD used peppermint to treat liver and respiratory diseases. One drop of peppermint EO is equivalent to 26 cups of peppermint tea. Avoid mucous membranes, sensitive skin, fresh wounds, and burns. Do not apply on throat or neck area of infants younger than 18 months old. Very potent...dilute with carrier oil for topical! Also drink in water. Inhale for motion sickness. Drop on tongue for nausea. One of my favorites for headaches. We frequently use the combo of lemon, lavender and peppermint for allergies.
- Considered the holy anointing oil, well known during time of Christ for anointing and healing powers. It was used to treat every conceivable ill known to man and valued more than gold during ancient times. Over 52 biblical references to frankincense. Incense is often translated from the Hebrew/Greek to frankincense and is referring to the same oil. My dad used for ocular melanoma
- Very potent. Dilute with carrier oil for topical use. Not a good one for internal use because wintergreen is a very hot oil and will make you nauseated. We use it for sore, tight, and strained muscles. Also right after an injury.
- We like to diffuse this for smelly odors. We used it when we moved in here to purify the air and when we got our new foam mattress to pull the strong chemical smell out. Interesting story about the painters here staining the kitchen cabinets. Diffused purification when they started painting and other parts of the house smelled but not the kitchen. We also use this as insect repellant to prevent bug bites. Great to neutralize the poison in bites and we use it for ant bites and mosquito bites.

- YL is well known for this blend. There is a legend of 40 thieves that were perfumers and spice traders. They rubbed EOs on themselves to avoid contracting the plague while they robbed the bodies of the dead and dying. When apprehended, the thieves were forced to tell what their secret was and disclosed the formula they used to protect themselves in exchange for a more lenient punishment. Studies conducted at Weber state university in 1997 demonstrated the killing power of these amazing oils against airborne micro organisms. Another hot oil that needs to be diluted with carrier oil for topical application. One of the things we diffuse most frequently, especially after we've been at church our out running errands or around a group of people. For headaches put 1 drop on tongue and push against roof of mouth.
