Program

The Challenge Fund will support the creation and diffusion of innovative, sustainable,
and scalable ICT and business solutions to the competitiveness challenges facing
Pakistani SMEs.
The Challenge Fund (CF)
21. 214/14/2018
Challenges | Innovation Grants - Solve the Challenge
Access to Finance
Even though Pakistan has one of the highest rates of mobile technology penetration, the
uptake of digital financial instruments remains relatively low
Lack of credit history for SMEs leads to poor credit ratings and limits access to financial
support.
Financial Institutes have a number of lending products for SMEs, however, businesses
are unable to access this funding due to lack of awareness and hesitance to approach
the formal sector
Access to Export Market
A large number of industries in Pakistan face difficulty in exports; either due to lack of
understanding of markets, difficulty in being compliant to export market requirements or
inability to reach markets.
22. 224/14/2018
Challenges | Innovation Grants - Solve the Challenge
ICT
Current sales and customer service channels rely heavily on human interaction which
are non-scalable, non-standardized and inefficient. This leads to inconsistent customer
service standards and difficulty to provide extensive knowledge to customers based on
their needs, and loss of ability to cross sell similar products.
ICT innovations have been radically changing industries and the user interfaces with
businesses worldwide, however, its use and penetration within the sphere of the
hospitality sector still remains from low to negligible in Pakistan.
Limited understanding of export opportunities, customer needs and actionable market
linkages are limiting the growth of ICT exports in emerging technologies and markets.
23. 234/14/2018
Challenges | Innovation Grants - Solve the Challenge
Hospitality
Lack of reliable information available for hospitality sector (eateries, lodging, travel)
creates friction and decreases customer confidence and retention.
Lack of awareness towards alternate tourist destinations and routes, increases demand
in already crowded, famous tourist resorts, diminishing the supply quality, which results
in poor customer experience, eventually decreasing customer base.
Women-Led Enterprises
Socio-cultural norms, mobility constraints and workplace conditions are some of the
factors that limit women's participation in the workforce in the ICT and hospitality sectors

Good Morning Everyone. Thank you for attending our session today to learn more about the USAID Small and Medium Enterprise Activity and to find out how you can get involved with us
The agenda for today will be as follows:
To start off, I’ll introduce you to our project, objectives and scope. I want to help you understand what we do.
Next, I’ll go over some of our findings from a sector analysis exercise that we conducted across Pakistan for the ICT sector
After that, and this is where it gets really interesting and relevant for you, we will talk about some of our initiatives and help you understand how we can potentially help you
Taking that discussion forward, we’ll conclude by explaining how you can apply for assistance and stay in touch
SMEA is a five-year, US $ 35 million project aimed at helping SMEs from selected sectors grow.
We aim to do this by improving firm level performance, fostering entrepreneurship, helping understand and access new markets and promoting access to finance.
Some of the sectors we plan to work on our ICT, Hospitality, Textile, Light Engineering, Logistics and Packaging and Minerals.
The overall objective that we are working towards is increasing sales revenues and helping create jobs
Another one of our focus areas is identifying and supporting women-led businesses
To outline how we plan to engage with you, I’ll give you a brief overview of our three components or departments
Firstly, and probably most importantly for you, we will work directly at the firm level with small ICT firms through our CE or Competitiveness Enhancement team
Second, by identifying specific problems and challenges across our 6 sectors, we will utilize the Challenge Fund to identify innovators who can come in and solve those problems
Finally, our Business Enabling Environment team works on proposing policy and regulatory reforms to the Government to improve Pakistan’s business environment and ecosystem
Coming around to what we have learnt about the ICT sector, a few months back we conducted what we call a “market led” sector analysis. What this basically means is that we tried to focus on where the demand was and how we could help the sector improve to be more responsive to this demand
As you can see, the most prominent identified challenges were certification & compliance requirements, difficult in developing new business, shortage of skilled labor and difficulty in accessing markets
Out of the sort of services we are focusing on, the most demanded was support on the technical side, followed by certifications, accessing markets and skills development; in that order.
As you’ll soon see, these components actually make up the bulk of our initiatives for the coming years and what sort of expectations you can have from us
In summary, there are three ways in which you can get involved with us
First, you can apply as a ICT sector startup or SME for firm level assistance
Second, you can apply as a Business Development Service Provider or (BDSP) to provide tech solutions to our other sectors
Finally, you can try and solve some of the problems we invite solutions for
Here are the links and contact information through which you can get involved with us
Besides this, me and my team are at the event today and would love to hear from you directly
NOTE Farrukh: Finish off with something inspirational, you're better at quoting things than I AM!
Thank you for your time and USAID SMEA and I look forward to hearing from you and possibly working with you
