Knowledge Workers embrace Enterprise Social Collaboration and Networking platforms like IBM Connections. The problem is, that Knowledge Workers are only a small minority in most companies. Many employees will not partici- pate in an Enterprise Social Collaboration platform, either because they are occasional users or because they are intro- verted. Separate platforms for communication and collaboration however cause content overlap and inconsistency, attention fragmentation and governance problems. With more than one Intranet platform it is practically impossible to create a ‘Single Point of Truth’.
XCC adds structure to IBM Connections and makes it thus easily consumable for new, occasional and unexperienced employees. With this IBM Connections extension it is easy to create and enable use cases for all types of users, e.g. internal communications, blue collar workers, common staff, community managers, department managers, senior managers, customers and partners. It lowers participation barriers and activates the employee base. In short: XCC helps you to get the most out of IBM Connections.

Intranet Expectations differ…
„Employees have to be aware of our
priorities, strategy, values and important
news. Everything important must be
published on my platform. I do not care
about social as long as employees do not use
it as a propaganda platform. My content
needs to look great.“
„I do not care about the constant self praise.
I need Enterprise Social Software to get my

(Analytics, Campaign & Lead Management, Targeting)
These features are mostly irrelevant in the Intranet and just
increase cost and complexity.

Successful Onboarding Initiative
71. Internal Communications can use
a special community to create and
manage heir content and publish
it on XCC based Intranet home
and landing pages. XCC pages can
be set up and customized easily,
using a set of grid templates and
choosing from almost 60 widgets.
Internal Communications can set up and maintain a navigation
between the XCC pages, providing employees with an intuitive
user experience for surfing the organization.

Internal
Communications

72. With XCC, Internal Communications can
turn the typical one way communication
into a real dialog with the employees. Here
are some examples:
Enable employees to like and comment
on all available information.
Bring specific forum discussions and / or
ideas to the employees’ attention with
prominently placed widgets on the
Intranet homepage.
Listen to and Respond to Employees
Engage
Employees
2
73. Observe and analyze the employee base
sentiment through comments and
questionnaires.
Engage employees with a picture competition,
for example ask employees to upload their
pictures with the new company logo and let all
employees vote on the best pictures.
With XCC Communication and Collaboration are
either on the same page or available with just one
click.

74. XCC is built with the latest Internet technology such as Bootstrap,
Fontawesome, IndexDB, JQueryUI and RequireJS.
With standard CSS knowledge
it is possible to adopt the
design of the XCC pages to
match corporate identity and
design guidelines.
Business divisions can have
their individual CI.

75. XCC makes it much easier for
divisions, branches, departments
and locations to create and maintain
their own landing page on the
Intranet than any traditional Web
Content Management System.
Almost all Web Content
Management Systems are built and
optimized for the Internet and are
far too complicated for occasional
Intranet users. IBM Connections is
much simpler to use. Any employee
can create a blog post or edit a wiki
page without any special training.

76. With traditional web CMS, Internal Communications is mostly unable
to effectively delegate the maintenance of the long tail of the
departmental web pages.
With XCC on the other hand, Internal Communications are able to set
up a departmental page, include it in a divisional or in the global
navigation and assign maintenance very effectively to managers or
assistants of that respective business unit.

77. With XCC, top managers have a choice:
Either they allow Internal Communications
to rephrase and publish content on their
behalf or they create and publish content
directly and just ask Internal Communication
to direct attention to their post with a
prominent placing on the Intranet home
page.
This way, top managers can engage in a
more personal way with the employees and
still get the attention they deserve.
Communicate Authentically and Effective

78. With XCC, it is easy to set up a special page allowing a company’s
chairman to interact with the employee base:
Introduce the chairman with his bio and an interview. Publish the
chairman’s latest ideas, priorities and thoughts prominently. Allow
employees to discuss issues, provide ideas and have the chairman’s
office help the chairman with the workload.

79. With XCC, Internal Communications can create an online
representation of a printed employee magazine – either as the
printed magazine appearing periodically or in continued delivery
form.
The online representation
of course adds value to
the printed magazine, as
it provides a feedback
channel for employees.

80. With XCC, Employee Relations managers
are able to document and maintain
guidelines and rules and make them easily
accessible to employees as part of the
Intranet.
Guidelines specific to a business unit or
location can be published on the
respective landing page only. Via the
employees’ comments the guidelines and
rules can be constantly improved and
honed.

81. XCC admins are able to target users
with content specific to their
interests, according to their inherited
LDAP attributes like
Business Unit,
Country,
Location or

Users can personalize their experience by setting their individual
preferences. Personalization and Targeting both work on an XCC
page and on a widget level.

82. Using separate platforms for Internal
Communications and Collaboration
confronts authors and users with difficult
choices:
Where are they supposed to publish and where should they search
for content? Some managers will choose to communicate through
the Web CMS based Intranet website, while others will choose to
communicate through the collaboration platform.
Content overlap, redundancy, inconsistency and governance
problems are the inevitable consequence of multiple platforms
on the Intranet.
With more than one platform, it is practically impossible to create a
Single Point of Truth.
Information Architecture

10
84. XCC provides many ways to consume, contribute to and maintain the
Intranet. The structure is most important for new employees,
occasional users and silver surfers.
The threshold to contribution with liking and commenting is very low.
Liking, comments and content creation all appear in the activity
stream and thus secure a high awareness.
The content creation and maintenance is much easier than with
traditional Web Content Management Systems. Delegation to line of
business is very effective.
When each business unit has one person in charge of maintaining its
landing page as part of the Intranet, then each business unit
automatically has one IBM Connections power user.

86. Not only can Internal Communications create and publish content
with XCC (as with any other Web Content Management System), they
can also curate content.
In other words: Internal Communications can select an employee's
blog post and publish it prominently on the Intranet home page or on
the landing page of a business unit or location, and thus recognize
and reward the employee’s contribution.

87. XCC enables community
managers to easily create,
customize and maintain
landing pages for their
community.
They can choose a

variety of templates and
arrange the most important
content according to their
preferences. They can also
include content from sub

relevant communities at
will.

selected and sorted. Introductory information
and important posts can be published in a
fixed position.
Introduce the community team by their role,
using the People Selector widget. Display all
events from the main and the sub
communities with the Event Calendar widget.
Interactive elements help driving user
engagement. Community landing pages can
either stick to the community navigation or
cover the whole width and replace the original

91. XCC provides the iFrame, the HTML and the Clipping widget.
The iFrame widget supports either retrieval through the user or
through the server. The HTML widget has an integrated CSS, HTML,
JSON and JavaScript editor, which supports direct code editing
without copying the code to and from an external application.
The HTML widget is able to post and process REST calls from other
applications and display the results in a custom format. Via the
integrated JavaScript Event Handler Framework, widgets can
communicate with each other (e.g. a CRM widget “talking” to a
ERP widget).

content from any Notes database. Application developers can share
and exchange their custom widgets with other customers.

The IBM Forms Experience Builder (FEB) enables line of business users
to create web forms applications for stand-alone use or for customer
and employee websites. Non-technical users are able to create
sophisticated web applications complete with forms, database,
reports, security, notifications and more.
FEB is a rapid application development platform and as such an
browser based alternative to Domino applications.

These are my Notes
Thank you John. Hello everyone. First I would like to thank you all for choosing this session. I know there are so many interesting presentation to attend, so we appreciate you being here.
In the next 10 minutes or so, I am going to present a few pages we have created in IBM Connections using XCC.
We believe IBM Connections is a powerful tool for collaboration that at times could be overwhelming with its many options. Our goal is to show you how effective yet simple it is to build user friendly pages inside Connections framework. With XCC we managed to present our user the information they need to work efficiently, whether the information is in Connections or stored elsewhere.
We began with the redesign of our intranet page.
Our corporate team had already recognized that the traditional intranet page was no longer serving its business purpose. Our aim was to maximize productivity and make information more accessible in spite of organizational boundaries. With IBM Connections gaining momentum at Tufts Health Plan and the rise of social networking in general, it only made sense for us to build our new intranet page on this social platform.
Allow me to present you ‘Insite’ , our new Intranet Page at Tufts Health Plan.
We came up with this page combining IBM Connections to take advantage of its social pieces and XCC product which is easily integrated and customizable.
Now how many of have seen XCC? For those of you not familiar with the product, I would like to get your attention to the top navigation bar. As you can see we are still inside Connections framework.
So how did we build this page?
One of XCC’s strong feature is its ease of use and how quickly you could setup a page, configure out of the box widgets and present it.
Before going further showing you our fabulous pages, let me go over a few simple steps on how to create a page. You need to install XCC products on the same server where your Connections is installed. The installation process is straight forward. You would then access the admin page from a specific URL. There you choose to create a page, choose a layout, choose to add widgets from the existing list of XCC widgets out of the box. Configure them. If you have any custom CSS code or any special JavaScript functionality you need to add, just upload it to the space. And Voila.
With XCC, we can aggregate content from many communities within Connections and present to users easily thus saving time and promote collaboration.
Our insite page has few benefits: it is agile, it is both content centric and people centric.
The Recent News section contains both information that needs to be distributed to all employees and content that is relevant to the user. We used XCC personalization feature to present information based on user’s geographic location and their roles within the organization.
We have also added custom widget to give more control to individuals. User has the ability to customize the page to get contents they care about hence helping them connect using their work styles which keeps them engaged.
They could see on the main page their “pinned” files, view their own bookmarks retrieve from the Connections profile, just like your my favorite on a browser.
Ability to “Pin” communities they are more active in or more interested. This could be a support community or a project based community.
Creating pages using XCC made our job as developers easier. We wanted to pass that ease of use to the community owners.
We created Admin Dashboard again using out of the box XCC widgets
Content authors don’t need to understand the structure of many communities setup in Connections. They don’t need to remember which community contains what specific entry. They just need to select the appropriate link in the specific box to publish their information.
This slide illustrates how we structured few communities to come up with our Intranet page.
Our employees only need to view one single page. As a result productivity is increase substantially.
The next slide is an example of a Department Page. We used a single template and distribute that to all departments.
It helps our employees to reduce email clutter. And move team conversation inside Connections.
This is a more user friendly interface, its uncluttered easy to use. The information displayed here is tailored based on who you are, which business unit you belong to.
We delegated ownership of this page to departmental managers who have full control over this page. Managers along with their team members work into collective (together) to tap into knowledge that is important to them.
The curated content is displayed here using many communities. This allows for quality information to surface on top.
User receives communications posted only on their own community.
This page invites users switch from their email and IM interactions over to this space. So they could be more productive and efficient.
For us it has proven to be key to endorse the use of Connections and for managers to lead by example and share their vision.
All this collaboration and Communication that is intended to assist user navigate through their work day is available within the same page.
The user is not detached from the ongoing collaboration that happens outside of their team community.
I am not sure if you face the same challenge as us with regards to finding information. But one of our pain point at work is “Where is that information?” There is tones of documented knowledge and guidelines inside of our organization. Now introducing Connections, it seemed that we were adding to this pool of knowledge and what we lacked was a knowledge map.
This is an example of a Support Page. We have many of them insite our company.
Our goal was to not only capture unwritten knowledge using social software but to centralize relevant information in one space.
We used Wikis in Connections to store guidelines and reference materials, added links to external documents.
Where that content is stored becomes transparent to the users.
This page is more of a self-service community.
It has a forum for questions & answers that help reduce all the back and forth emails and phone calls with the support staff.
This next slide illustrates a page setup to simplify the onboarding process of new employees or existing employees moving to a new position at Tufts Health Plan.
With IBM Connections, we see that new employees adjust better to their new position and we are able to convert the new hire into an effective employee.
When an employee is promoted to a supervisor role in our organization, this is their dashboard where all rules, regulations, guidelines, and relevant information is offered.
We are a highly regulated industry.
All our employees must follow all rules and guidelines closely.
So quick access to all that information is critical.
As a new supervisor one can quickly find:
What the useful and most frequently accessed links that other use
Where are files that contain all the standard templates and all product information for example
Find the subject matter experts and the Go-to-People
As you can see this community is very reach and content driven.
It is a great example of how we used XCC to aggregate content and present it to users.
It is important to add that this page and its content is created completely by an end user without IT involvement.
Responsibility of maintaining the page and its content is simply shifted to the business unit.
So it does free IT department to attend to more important tasks.
For the past couple of years, John and I along with our team back home, are working hard promoting IBM connections and improving user’s adoption. As John explained, we have success stories with those who have recognized the value of social collaboration but also few others who resist and complain about having to spend time monitoring and tending to another “inbox” of sorts, when they are barely able to keep email under control.
So one day because of that very same group, we were googling to find a magic tool to make the whining go away and basically make our lives easier, when we discovered XCC.
This product has helped us go back to our most difficult users and turn them into active contributor inside IBM Connections.
XCC helped us overcome obstacles and leverage the use of Connections.
With XCC Internal Communications is made social, i.e. its content can be liked and commented (unless commenting is disabled)
Content publishing, liking and commenting is integrated into the Activity Stream and will be noticed by peers
IBM Connections is made for end users without training, i.e. it is very easy to use and thus “management compatible”
Business and Service Units can even have their own interpretation of the corporate style guide.
Very easy, very fast, very flexible to use

Create a complete and deeply integrated Intranet with Communication, Collaboration and Custom Apps without any investment in software licenses or technology
XCC for IBM Connections Cloud is available on Premises, on IaaS/PaaS Offering now and will be available as SaaS Offering soon
IBM Connections Cloud + XCC Cloud = Intranet as a Service
XCC can be installed within 60 minutes, and can be tested and customized without any interference of the production environment. Even complete Intranet re-launches can be prepared in “Stealth Mode”
With XCC Intranet projects shift focus within hours from technology to content. Intranet projects are tremendously accelerated.
We maximize the Return of Your Investments in Software Platforms
