Filling Your Design Toolkit: Premium Assets on a Shoestring Budget

Notes de l'éditeur

  1. Thank you for being here to spend some time with us today. Two things most people could use more of are time & money. Today I’d like to save you a little of both. I know that many training departments are trying to stretch their budgets as far as possible and I hope you’ll find some good resources that will do just that.
  2. Solo training consultant in a huge enterprise. Wonderful tour as community manager at Articulate Now at Mindset Digital, which is a startup here in Columbus, Ohio Never had a very big budget for design material – so I’ve had a LOT of practice searching for good, usable assets.
  3. As you may have already seen, the handout is available on the event resources page. Has everything we’ll talk about along with my contact information. I’ll also give you my contact information and I’m happy to send you a copy.
  4. The handout is a sampling of an even larger collection of design resources that I’ve put together. So if you’d like to explore more beyond what we cover today you can easily do that.
  5. Before we jump in let’s do a quick check-in to see what kind of budgets we’re all working with.
  6. …and which type of design resources you work with the most?
  7. One important note about all of the things we’ll see today. They’re usable by anyone with whatever tools you already have. You certainly can edit them in Photoshop and Illustrator or whatever, but these are all usable ‘as is’ in PowerPoint, Storyline, Captivate, and others you already have.
  8. Unfortunately, we won’t have time for many questions, etc but Melissa will help me keep an eye on things in the chat area. I’d love to capture you’re favorite sites and tips as we go, so please use chat to share things with the group as we go.
  9. Here are the categories we’ll look at. There are others but I think we’ll cover 99% of what anyone would typically need.
  10. Of course, we need to highlight the importance of staying on the good side of the law and check any licensing or usage terms that might apply.
  11. Let’s start with photos which are often one of the most sought after type of design assets.
  12. The first site I’d like to share is Pexels. Free to use for commercial use. Many of these use a CC0 license which means you can use them without attribution. Be sure to check.
  13. Not only do they have a lot of great looking photos, they also have some killer apps and a really nice add-in for Office. Being able to search and add Pexel photos from right inside PowerPoint is a super nice time-saver.
  14. They also have a cool “find by color” option and videos.
  15. Stock Snap is another source of great-looking photos – also with a CC0 license.
  16. One thing I like about this site is the ability to save your favorites so they’re easy to find anytime you come back to the site.
  17. Another nice feature is the ability to use their photos in Snappa which is an online graphics editor with a nice collection of design templates similar to Canva.
  18. Pixabay made this list because it is one of the biggest sources of images. Approaching a MILLION items.
  19. This is also a good source for other items like illustrations, vectors and videos.
  20. The last stand alone photo site is Unsplash – CC0 license.
  21. I like that Unsplash lets you follow your favorite categories and photographers. Being able to create your own collections is a really nice, useful feature too.
  22. If you ever need placeholder images for mockups or anything like that, just change the .com to .it and you’ve got a super easy way to get images in specific sizes that you specify.
  23. If you’d like to cast a wider net, there are a number of ways to search across more than one of these free stock photo sites including freephotos.cc Do your own search of browse their big list of categories.
  24. Everystockphoto is another one. The unique thing about this one is it includes images from sites like NASA, Wikipedia & Wikimedia Commons.
  25. Finda.photo is a good site if you’re looking for CC0 images. In addition to search, you can browse by color or cruise through the categories.
  26. The Creative Commons site connects you with lots of cool stuff like “cultural” images from the New York Public Library, Museum of Metropolitan Art, Rijksmuseum and Europeana.
  27. And finally, EveryPixel. This is my favorite – ‘go to’ site. It searches 50 photo sites and it’s the only one I know of that searches both free and paid sites.
  28. This one has some really useful filters for: Free vs Paid and Horizonal vs Vertical The “Free Area” filter is fantastic when you want to put text on your image for things like title slides. Just click in the grid where you want your text and EveryPixel will give you photos that can accommodate that. Really cool! They’ll also let you upload an image you already have to search for similar ones.
  29. Now for a simple tip that has helped me a lot in not just searching but actually finding useful images.
  30. If you’re striking out in your search, pop into one of the paid sites like istockphoto or shutterstock and take a look at the tags or keywords. Usually I can find better or different things to search for on the free sites to get what I’m after.
  31. Just a quick reminder to add your favorites via chat. Looks like we’ve had some good ones already.
  32. Mockups are kind of like photos and I think these are one of the most underutilized of all the things we’ll see today.
  33. When I say mockups I don’t mean it in the sense of a model of lo-fi replica. I’m talking about placing a screenshot or other image in a realistic background. For example, this first option is SmartMockups.com where you can upload your own image or give it a website to automatically capture for you. If you remember back to the slide about the handout at the beginning of the session, I used one of these mockup sites for creating that image.
  34. Dunnnk is a really good one if you already have a screenshot or image of your own you want to use. Note that they use THREE n’s …I always have trouble typing that one.
  35. PlaceIt will work with your own image or capture a website for you. It has the most options but the tradeoff is only the small size is free.
  36. Thwock only works with an online URL. Gives you a choice of devices and it is interactive so you can use it for live demos and things like that.
  37. Our last mockup site is another really nice one. The thing I like about Magic Mockups is that I can preview all the different options without needing to reload the image I’m working with.
  38. Fonts are a favorite of mine. I could spend all day browsing fonts.
  39. Google Fonts is typically my first stop when I’m looking for fonts. Big collection I know I can use and not have to worry about any licensing issues.
  40. Some other sites go a bit beyond what Google offers when you’re looking for more unique characters like dingbats, icons, and a bunch of other styles. DaFont is my next favorite place to find free fonts. Different fonts have different licensing details so be sure to check.
  41. Font Squirrel is also a good one. They have handy usage icons that helps you see at a glance what you can do with their fonts.
  42. And another, final option worth checking out is 1001fonts.com
  43. One of the challenges with having access to so many fonts is coming up with combinations that work well together.
  44. FontJoy is a useful website for pairing fonts that work well with each other. It will serve up nice looking combinations of Google fonts for your title, headings and body text. And it even gives you some customization options so you can tweak it just the way you like.
  45. Icons area another one of my favorite things and I use these a ton.
  46. FlatIcon is definitely one of my favorites and allows you to download 400 icons/day. They have a lot of great sets and many of them let you choose from multiple styles. If you use lots of icons like me, $10/month removes any limits and unlocks even more icons.
  47. IconMonstr is another one of my favorites. The nice thing about this they can be used for commercial projects without attribution.
  48. Icons8 has a huge collection of icons in a variety of styles and formats. Free version only up to 100x100 px They have a cool way to search by drawing.
  49. The Noun Project is a popular option for icons with nearly 1 MILLION icons and growing. $40 / year removes the author attribution from the images. Or you can buy individual icons for $1.99
  50. Illustrio is a relatively recent find for me that I really like a lot. It has a big selection in a bunch of different styles. And they can be used in commercial projects without attribution.
  51. If you ever have a favorite icon font that you’d like to customize this next tip is for you.
  52. Taylor Croonquist shared this video (the link is on page 2 of the handout) on how to convert font characters into editable shapes with PowerPoint.
  53. It is super easy…just stack the text box with your icon characters on top of a rectangle shape. Then use Fragment option unders PowerPoint's Merge Shapes tool.
  54. After converting and a little clean-up you’ll have editable shapes which are more flexible and way better looking.
  55. Vector graphics are another category that I think are underused by a lot of people. These are always super useful for me.
  56. Lots of great looking options here at freepik. Free with attribution.
  57. Vecteezy is similar to Freepik. Also free with attribution.
